The idea was that there wouldn’t be any dedicated healers because everyone has the ability to heal and could look after themselves.
Doesn’t quite work out like that, of course, because most of us have one heal on a ludicrously long cooldown which generally heals for about half of the damage the average trash mob does in one hit.

I think it’s the game mechanics and the type of mobs that make the personal story irritating at times. Risen are so stupidly overpowered that they’re simply no fun at all in wave after wave after wave spawning right on top of you. At lower levels, it’s the same thing with the endless bandits who are obviously wearing superman costumes under their tatty clothes.
In answer to the question, you don’t need to do the personal story but there’s a lot of useful exp there…

Like most missions that involve risen, they could halve the number of waves coming at you and it would still be irritatingly long.

There’s a strange (rare) bug on an event in Queensdale where you have to escort a caravan. The npc, Mona, is typical of other npc’s in the game, she goes haring off at anything that looks as if it could easily kill her. In this case the buggy AI gets her stuck
She spotted a wolf and went berserk. The AI seems to make the npc’s charge at their target so Mona charged at the wolf, missed and went flying past. Then the wolf charged at Mona, missed and went flying past. This just repeated over and over, right through a river, till they reached a rock wall and couldn’t move any further. Then the wolf got fed up and summoned a friend and Mona died.
I killed the mobs, revived Mona but she obviously didn’t like the water and couldn’t leave the river. End of progress. I’ve seen this happen a couple of times.

It seems that the ‘Cave Troll’ and the one with the bandits attacking the farm events happen very often.
Cave Troll event seems to start up whenever someone tries to take the rune in the troll cave. There’s usually someone around who’ll pick it up and get swatted.
As far as I can see, the ranch gets attacked by the bandits every time someone walks past the place if the very short timer has expired.
There are a few npc’s around Queensdale who start up DE’s if you talk to them, it’s worth having a wander around.

Some of the quests in the personal story can be really tough depending on your class and experience playing the character.
Forgetting about the “learn2play” crowd for a moment, a lot of people are just ignoring the personal story until they’ve massively outlevelled the things to give themselves a fighting chance. And then, when you finally get to the final part you find you NEED a full 5 person team to even get access to the dungeon anyway.
I won’t be completing the personal story on any of my characters. It’s worth doing if you can, at lower levels anyway, for the exp you get but apart from that I can’t see the point since I won’t be able to complete it anyway.

For me the drop rate has absolutely plummeted. I’ve found just three unidentified dyes in the last week. I was getting that many in an hour before. On the other hand, one of those three was a Midnight Ice, first really nice dye I’ve found since launch!

It’s funny really. I used to enjoy those Quake deathmatches and CTF maps, etc. where you got more or less insta-gibbed if an enemy saw you first.
Yet in MMO’s, where you still have a fighting chance even if you get surprised by an enemy, I just don’t enjoy PvP at all.
I think, possibly I just prefer the fast paced action with just a few powers. Bars full of powers, like we get in MMO’s, give you too many choices and that gets overwhelming under pressure and that’s just not fun…for me anyway.

Orr is supposed to be hard, right?
They could have made it tough without the annoyance factor. The reason hardly any game in existence gives ‘trash’ mobs crowd control skills is because those sorts of mobs always go around in packs and it is more frustrating than fun being pulled all over the place.
lunawisp was my peacebringer on City of Heroes – she lives on in memory as my gaming id.
There’s no way you can do all events several times, do all the hearts in the starter zone and be only lv12 just no way !
Map completion only means you did all the hearts, POI and WP in the map… this is the archaic quest mentality all over again “I have completed the map and still not high level enough QQ” right of course you’re NOT ! hearts are not the main source of XP in the game DE’s are !
Problem is the DE’s don’t always start up when they’re supposed to. I know Queensdale like the back of my hand now after spending so much time there on various alts and none of them., not one, has been at the right level for the hearts/events until I’ve been around the whole place a few times. Even if you stick around after an event waiting for subsequent events to fire, they frequently don’t. If you don’t even know those events are there, it’s a pretty sure bet you’re not going to see half of them.

Arenanet did what all development studios do. They tailored the game to tempt what they hope is the largest possible player base to buy the game and keep playing (and buying form the store).
Your assertion that nearly every game has been ruined by making it easier would suggest that the vast majority of people don’t want to have to spend all day working then come back home and log on to a game and have to start working hard all over again.
Don’t like it? Well, tough. It appears that ‘easier’ is what the majority wants and when it comes to paying customers, companies go with the majority or go out of business.

I got a 2 minutes warning, thats more then enough time.
That’s fine if that’s the warning they give us. On Desolation, we were given the time in hours, not minutes. We thought we had plenty of time.

And just to make it even worse I had just created a new character and had just defeated the boss at the end of the starter zone. I’m now in a no-mans land where I can’t get out, can’t do the run again, can’t communicate with any npc. Guess I’ll have to delete the character and re-create it. More accurate info next time please Anet :p

It was nice to get a warning that the game was going to restart in one hour. Gave us plenty of time to get a few things done beforehand…or so we thought. Five minutes later, in the middle of a fight the thing restarted. Thanks for that…

Most of the folks in this thread simply want Orr to be less annoying so they can farm with ease and faster. It’s pathetic really.
This is just another case of people whining to whine.
One man’s “whine” is another man’s legitimate concern.
In your very first paragraph you admitted that it’s “annoying”. Annoyance is NOT a good idea in a game. It just drives people away. Annoying does not equate to challenging much less fun.
lunawisp was my peacebringer on City of Heroes – she lives on in memory as my gaming id.
What I do depends on the event really. If there are only a few people around I’ll stay and help to the end. If it’s crowded and the event doesn’t need that many people I’ll leave after a while – the rewards are just not worth the time. 2 whole rep for the guild, a bit of karma and less exp than I get for gathering a lettuce are hardly worth spending a great deal of time on…unless someone there needs the help of course…

Either the gem store is broken, it’s extremely slow or it’s just not intuitive enough for me.
Whichever tab (out of the eight) along the top I click on, nothing happens except the name of that tab appearing in the window below. Nothing else changes. What on earth am I supposed to do with this thing? Is there some secret to using it that I haven’t discovered yet?

This has been a real pain in the neck today. I generally dump things I don’t want on the market each time I come across a safe area but even allowing 20+ minutes between sales of a handful of items I’m getting this message constantly. It’s making the TP more or less useless, my inventory is almost full of stuff the game won’t let me sell except to a vendor.

There’s a lot of strange AI and terrain bugs around. I was in Queensdale earlier and started the Caravan Escort quest. Mona, the npc that accompanies the caravan chased a wolf into a river where she promptly died. I revived her but she got stuck on the terrain in the water. The caravan won’t move without her so the quest is stuck.
It was quite comical watching her. The AI seems to make the npc’s charge at their target so Mona charged at the wolf, missed and went flying past. Then the wolf charged at Mona, missed and went flying past. This just repeated over and over till they reached a rock wall and couldn’t move any further. Then the wolf got fed up and summoned a friend and Mona died.

Lacking a reply or quote option again…what is it with this forum software?
Anyway, far from trying to race through the area quickly, I was actually trying to look around and locate things since it was my first time there. After having other people train their mobs on me half a dozen times and being pulled all over the place by ridiculous numbers of minions every one of which seemed to have some sort of crowd control ability, I got fed up and left. Oh, and I’ve never played WoW.
lunawisp was my peacebringer on City of Heroes – she lives on in memory as my gaming id.
Hmm, well, dumbed down is hardly the expression. Personally I don’t find it fun when I’m pulled left by one mob, then before I can get up I’m pulled right by another, then once again before I can get up I knocked back half a dozen yards.
If my knockdown lasted a microsecond like it does on the mobs it wouldn’t be so bad but when I’m knocked down, I stay down for ages.
If this is what passes for fun in GW2 then maybe I’m playing the wrong game.
lunawisp was my peacebringer on City of Heroes – she lives on in memory as my gaming id.
There’s a reason most MMO’s don’t give crowd control abilities to minions (or trash mobs). Those mobs nearly always come in groups and giving them all abilities like this makes the game more annoying than fun. This is one area I think they should learn from other MMO’s and tone it down a bit…

That could be it. Weren’t doing as many DE’s due to a lack of people around outside core hours. I’ll try again this afternoon and see if it improves for me, could certainly do with a few decent dyes…

Necromancers are viable, sometimes infuriating if you rely on the pets but certainly not useless. That flesh golem, really…someone needs to extract it’s AI chip, turn it around and stick it back in again. It does the exact opposite of what you’d want it to…attacks things when you want to run somewhere in a hurry and stands around watching when you’re fighting.
Apart from that, I’ve had fun with mine.

Seems back to normal now, for me at least. I spent nearly three hours in Straits of Devastation this morning, got three dyes…pretty mundane ones too.

It’s not only a lack of people, and it’s not only restricted to higher level areas. Look at the Krait Witch that is in Kessex Hills. Very few people will do this more than once. It hits like a train, takes ages to put down and your reward is a bit of karma and less exp than you’d get from gathering a lettuce. I’ve never had anything drop from it and there’s no chest. The only reason for even going there that I can see is the POI.
PS. I had to insert “that is” between “Krait Witch” and “in Kessex” because the silly filter inserts kitten in there!!!

I got stuck in a log recently. The camera was also stuck so I couldn’t see much. There was a mob aggroed on me also stuck in the log so I couldn’t even use a waypoint. This business of being locked in combat when a mob decides it can see you gets old fast. Anyway, just relogging solved the problem…nothing else worked…

Well rendering issues aside, that perma stealth thing is an issue.
But rendering issues aside, there is no ‘perma-stealth’.

Yes, well, a ranger is not exactly a caster is it. Create an elementalist and try it again.
And while you’re at it, how about moderating the language. Insulting people you don’t agree with doesn’t help your cause at all.

“Its shocking how little people are used to a challenge that requires practice, timing and memory.”
Can’t quote properly and don’t get a reply button…anyway – it’s hardly a challenge when the very second the cutscene ends, you’re back at the start. Something is obviously wrong but it’s not doable for me, I can’t even move my character before it fails. I’ve just given up on this one.

Here’s my experience of the clock tower…
Arrived, standing around with lots of other people. No idea whats going on but we seem to be in a queue of some sort so ok…
Cutscene starts. Watch with interest.
Cutscene ends and I’m instantly ported back to the beginning. Seems I failed before I even managed to see what was going on or even reach the keyboard or mouse.
Stand around for a few minutes as other people who have obviously failed as well end up back here.
Mark it down as a waste of my time and leave.
Great fun…

I feel for the people who feel they’ve wasted resources/time/money here but really, this is why the casino’s are full of people losing money. If you have a 1 in 100 chance of a win, it doesn’t matter how many times you lose, that chance still stays at 1 in 100 the next time you play.
You could open ten thousand chests and get nothing, your chance of getting a good item on chest 10001 is exactly the same as your chance on the very first chest you opened.
lunawisp was my peacebringer on City of Heroes – she lives on in memory as my gaming id.
LOTRO had the same problems with pathing issues for mobs. If it decided the mob couldn’t reach you it would get a little spinning question mark icon over it’s head and walk off in a huff. Even used to trigger if there was water between you and the mob even though the mob was perfectly capable of moving through water. Took them years to get that down to an acceptable level. They could have done it instantly if they’d disabled the stupid mechanism but, apparently, stopping people gaining something insignificant for little risk was more important than not breaking the game.
I wouldn’t mind so much if combat ended when the mobs go invulnerable but while they go off to heal up, we’re left there with whatever health we had when they went invulnerable.

Be careful what you ask for! I did the Kessex Hills bridge DE yesterday. They’re made it more ‘difficult’ almost to the point of being ridiculous.
Three catapults bombarding the entire area througout, each of which is on such a short respawn timer that there’s no point destroying them. Multiple veteran centaurs attacking simultaneously. Waves of centaurs arriving before the previous wave has been cleared.
It was fun but just as well plenty of people joined in otherwise it would have been impossible.

I suppose we can take some comfort from the fact that if the game wasn’t so popular, they wouldn’t bother with bots…

I’ve been feeling pretty much the same way but keep trying different things to see if I can make it work. I’ve grudgingly come to the conclusion that this probably isn’t the game for me. I don’t like the way you have to run around in a group of 20+ to get anything done. Solo is a nightmare, some of the mobs can take you down in 2 or 3 hits while it takes 20+ hits to scratch them. And it’s not like you can easily avoid them with the way they aggro from distances where they’re barely visible and you are forced to kite around like a lunatic in every single fight. My hero’s feel about as heroic as a new born kitten sometimes.
A bunch of us came across the wasp queen earlier. We were all levelled down for the area. We basically just queued up to be one-shotted. This is fun? Not for me. It seems that while events scale up for multiple players, etc. they don’t scale down to make them doable if there isn’t a huge group about to roll over them.
I know the game was only launched a short while ago and they have a long way to go but with all the stalled events, broken skillpoints, bot invasion and ridiculously strong mobs, I’m finding it more frustrating than fun.
lunawisp was my peacebringer on City of Heroes – she lives on in memory as my gaming id.
I’m making alts, mainly because, for me all the fun is at the lower levels. I get to the 50’s and it just becomes a slog. When I get fed up I delete and try again with another character. One day I’ll run one up to the level cap but it’s not a key aim of mine.
lunawisp was my peacebringer on City of Heroes – she lives on in memory as my gaming id.
There’s a cave in the same area with a Veteran Ooze and, in front of it at the cave entrance, four smaller oozes. Kill the first two, start on the second two and the first two respawn on top of you. Kill the second two and try the first two again and the second two respawn. You’re constantly fighting four oozes. I just walked away from it in the end, still have no idea what’s in that cave.

DR is diminishing returns. Basically, after you’ve been in one area killing the same mobs for a long (actually a pretty kitten short) length of time, your rewards for killing those mobs dries up. They want you to move on and do something else.
In most areas that’s not a major issue, you can just find something else to slap about. In places like Orr though, that’s a pretty big problem since you have Risen and…er that’s about it. Play there for a a while and you get no drops.
lunawisp was my peacebringer on City of Heroes – she lives on in memory as my gaming id.
I created a new character yesterday and I can’t honestly say new people to the game are going to be getting a wonderful experience. The low level zones are full of downlevelled characters steaming over everything with AoE’s before the ‘real’ low level character even gets a chance to see what’s going on.
Downlevelling needs to be true downlevelling if it’s going to work. At the moment, a downlevelled 80 is FAR stronger than a real low level character and it shows. They absolutely clean up in low level areas.
