Karmic or Guilded Infusion?

Yeah Gilded does sound great, but I’m just afraid that with the ANET removing gold from bosses and changing that system to something else to get money, that the gilded infusion would then become useless.

Also with with karmic I could get 15% more Orrian Jewlry Boxes, and it’ll be slightly quicker to get obsidian shards (need 241 more but thats easy)

You’re partly right in that several full silvers are being removed if and only if you routinely do dungeons for the money.
For players in the open world, coppers drop every second mob and with gilden this is pushed in the silver range. Merely playing the game will give significantly bigger rewards in the long run. It’s not something you’ll notice overnight but if you can’t value the copper you’re not worthy the gold.

Gotta love how it’s called an achievement and the OP is upset that he has to actually do some achieving to get it.

How is dodging silly kids because they have nothing better to do than troll people, an achievement?

But…love you as I do ANet…..I am not happy about putting what is a PvE achievement in a place like Obsidian Sanctum. I like JP’s, I like WvW, but I don’t like that fact a Bazaar achievement was put into a WvW JP. I think it was unnecessary to be honest.

It’s not a PvE achievement. A.net is trying to give WvW’ers something too. You’re not required to get it, it’s not required for the quartz node and not for any other rewards. It only gives 20 achievement points. So don’t dramatize something that’s entirely optional.

Removing PvP in WvW Jumping Puzzles

marnick.4305

Yeah it is supposed to do that. But Anet keeps adding achievements PvE players hunt for. Either they remove the WvW achievements from PvE living stories or create an extra type of living story for WvW.

Are you blind or just ignorant? Why do you repeat this “this is PvE story, PvE achi” mantra while indeed the achievement is clearly PvP.

Apparently this is a pvp achi in a pvp zone. It is clearly not PVE. What’s your problem?

It is clearly a PvE achievement in a PvE achievement category placed in a PvP environment in WvW. What’s your problem?

And I’m saying it doesn’t belong there.
Anet should definitely NOT mix PvE WvW and PvP in living stories even if they’re intentions were only regarding the finishing and not killing players.

Plus some people only do WvW, others only do PvP and again some only do PvE.
Those WvW people can only do 1 achievement.
The PvP guys can do about 2-4 achievements.
The PvE guys can do the whole rest.

I know I don’t mind the whole thing. I’m doing PvP PvE and WvW but I’m taking the point of view from a person that is not as good in jumping puzzles as a jump & run fan I am and that doesn’t do PvP and/or WvW for example.

Well then again this would give people like me the ability to gain even more achievement points though….

The game disagrees with you. It’s a pvp achievement in a pvp zone. I’m really sorry but that’s how it is. If you want PVP achievements, you’ll have to PVP. I don’t get the fuss.

Condition Damage - Scaling and Caps

The saddest part of all of this is that Anet still hasn’t fixed it after 10 months… This isn’t a problem for any other MMO on the market… why can’t Anet do what even cheap F2P MMO’s can do?

I’ve played cheap F2P MMOs and almost every MMO starts out with ridiculously low debuff stacks. Even very rich B2P MMOs fall in that trap, most notoriously WoW itself. It took years for WoW to fix the debuff cap.
- 8 debuffs at launch, making warlocks useless and disallowing rogues to use their best weapon (barman’s shanker)
- after about a year this was doubled to 16 debuffs. Shawoop.
- another six months to have it raised to 40 debuffs. Moar dots nao…
- it was only at WotLK that the debuff cap was removed entirely.

As for Aion, I believe they’re still stuck with universal debuff caps because otherwise spiritmasters would be overpowered if they’d actually do damage. Perfect logic.

Apparently this issue is universal and relatively difficult to solve. On the other hand, balance is impossible because such arbitrary limits effectively destroy many builds and often whole professions.

I’m going on a 3 week holiday soon, which means that I’ll miss one of the two week cycles. I play GW2 because I didn’t want to date a videogame and I’m not starting now.

You’re freaking out because GW2 might “do something” while you’re gone that you might miss.

Yeah, you’re not dating GW2…you’re acting like it’s your baby. “Oh god if I go on vacation, I might miss it rolling over for the first time! Must freak out!!!”

Maybe take all this stuff just a LITTLE less seriously, bro.

I like to play the entire game if you don’t mind. They don’t have to not make content, that’s a false dichotomy, but I’d appreciate the content more if I could play it next month, next year. You know, the way holiday events work too.

And indeed, I’m as much a fan of GW2 as some people are fans of their favourite sports team. They’d hate to miss the European Finals without any chance to watch a recording. I’m proud of that. This is a good game, I only want it to be better.

reason behind time gating quartz?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

But on the other hand, it doesn’t require 3 hours raids 3 times a week either like it was in WoW to get end-game crafting materials. It’s not necessary to dump hours and hours into farming specific items, which would put hardcore 24/7 players in control of the economy.

I don’t like either system, both are attempts to keep players logging in regularly on a treadmill.

Except quartz isn’t part of a threadmill. It’s an option, for most professions the inferior option. To have players log in regularly is the definition of MMO, has nothing to do with threadmills.

What would be your alternative? To have everything on the TP, out of reach for the casual player? I kindly disagree.

Well that would be a never ending discussion. Moral awareness is gained also trough social and cultural imposing. What should be morally unacceptable to ones may not be to others. So there is no actual answer to that question.

Sure, I tentatively agree to that. But should the majority submit to a minority because they can’t stand certain imagery? Where does that end … can we allow our freedoms to be curtailed because some can’t stand others being strong and/or happy? Morality can only exists when each person can make his own choice.

And yet 55 monks were never nerfed

That’s because Anet in GW1 took a more sensible approach. if a particular combination of skills was proving OP, instead of nerfing those skills (and breaking all associated builds regardless of OPness), they instead introduced counters.

This actually increased build diversity, by introducing paper-rock scissors mechanisms, instead of just reducing build diversity into a narrow straightjacket of “allowed builds”.

In the case the the 55 monks, they introduced new enemies that could strip enchantments in all the popular farming zones of the time (For example those popup critters in UW, jade scarabs in the crystal desert – these were added as a DIRECT response to the 55 monk farmers)

That was only part of the solution. There were still tons of mobs to be farmed with 55 monks. The build itself was never nerfed. The grim cesta exists to this day, protective spirit works almost exactly like launch day and healing breeze is still as effective. Rune stacking was never nerfed. I can still make a new 55 and start farming.

The real solution was far more subtle. A.net steadily improved rewards for regular, varied play. Exploring, vanquishing and merely playing a campaign started to earn you tons of money later on. On the other hand, stuff like dimishing returns seriously impacted the rewards gained from actual farming. In the end, playing normally and farming had about the same net effect.

I’m already seeing some parallels. The game is heavily front-loaded time wise, while farming is discouraged through DR and the incoming dungeon overhaul. Zerker doesn’t have to be nerfed to reduce farming, instead the smart gamer is encouraged to vary his playstyle for optimal rewards.

This is one of those issues where a.net has to cater to american puritans. Most festivals I go to in Belgium or Holland have at least a few naked people walking around. But sure feel free to debate whether or not there’s any legal or ethical issues involved. It’s in your head.

tl’dr: People can be functionally naked and swimwear is one of them. Grow up if you can’t handle that.

That’s what i love about those countries. And becomes so natural, that people don’t stare anymore. But i still wonder if nudity was allowed in this game, if the genitalia were substituted by kittens also as a form of censorship.

Even if you don’t have any anymore, like women with mastectomies, those brave people are censored on websites like facebook because a minority can’t stand powerful women. Should the internet, beacon of freedom and liberties, really cater to that kind of sentiment?

Swimsuits aren’t imho problematic, although some country/religions have some issues with female showing their bodies.

I have a problem with some country/religions shoving their insecurities down my throat, especially on the internet which is international by default.

As a man, I’ve seen thousands of naked women already. It’s no issue if you don’t make it one.

Bot Traders - Ban Them

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: marnick.4305

marnick.4305

So you are trying to put in a low buy order for that final mini you’ve always wanted. You are willing to wait a while, but you would like to put in the highest bid. So you add, say, one copper to the current highest bid price. Seconds later, the previous highest bid price is removed and instantly replaced with one maybe 1-5 copper higher than yours.

You think… hmm… that was a fast update. Maybe there is someone watching this position closely. So you update your price to be the high bidder again, only to find that the same “person” updates theirs almost instantly to cap yours. The speed with which this happens is inhumanly fast. Could this be a Bot? I suspect so, after all, who has the time to sit there and check a single post all day, every day?

So we, the normal users of the trading post, ask that Bot Traders be detected and banned from the game just as any other Botter would and should be. It is making it nearly impossible for a normal player to buy some items at low prices and is making a profit for cheaters because it is the Botter who forces us to buy at the higher price.

Something has to be done and we look forward to the change.

Thanks Anet.

Are you even sure it’s the same person and not a third who wants that same mini?

And wouldn’t repeatedly overbidding reduce profit margins by a large degree? If it’s a cheaper mini, he’s sinking a silver every time for a potential 2 silver profit.

Also… everyone look at Martin’s face in that stream when Colin all-too-innocently says that the “Pirate Politics” are nothing at all like current American Democracy… I wonder if that isn’t a similar reaction Most europeans have to that exchange?

Priceless moment … definitely worth the 23 minutes it took to get there.

No offense to any Americans but the campaigning in this update is exactly what american politics looks like to the average European. Let’s go down the list:
1/ Ads that trash the opponent instead of playing own strengths
2/ online campaigning
3/ elections rigged by the person with most money
4/ candidates literally buying votes
5/ exact same promises (the minigames)
6/ apparently only 2 parties ???
7/ irrelevant issues hijacking the vote

None of that happens in that scale in Europe. From European view the US has a vote between right-wing and extreme right-wing which is hardly a vote if you really consider it. This in-game election looks exactly the same to me.

GW2 optimization tips

Following tips might help to optimize your Guild Wars 2 game. I’ve collected these from Dev answers. Tried all and they either work or have no effect in my case.

  • Don’t install GW2 in program folders, due to restrictions on file editing. C:\Guild Wars 2\ is highly recommended
  • Make a shortcut to the GW2.exe > right click it > properties > compatibility > run as administrator.
  • Turn off User Account Control (if you know what you’re doing)
Being administrator in Windows 7/8 merely gives you the right to run stuff as administrator, it doesn’t do so by default. If Guild Wars 2 doesn’t install or update, you’ll have to trigger admin rights for a piece of software.

Firewall:

  • exclude GW2.exe and awesomiumprocess.exe
  • exclude tcp ports 80, 443, 6112 and 6600 in both directions

Router configuration:

  • give your dedicated gaming PC a fixed IP adress
  • tunnel TCP ports 80, 443, 6112 and 6600 directly to this PC in two directions

Router hardware:

  • buy a new one. Old routers (5+ years) tend to not accept dozens of connections which are very common in all software nowadays
  • memory leaks in firmware tend to bog down a router. Unplug it and let it rest for at least 5 minutes to clear the RAM.
  • install the latest firmware or a homebrew
  • especially with frequent disconnects at eg 18:00 in the evening, change wireless channel to another number. Many people logging on after work can overload any customer grade device.

Trading Post:

  • awesomiumprocess.exe is the ingame browser running the Trading Post. Give it full access to TCP port 80 to run smoothly.
  • delete GW2cache in temp files temp. Garbage tends to collect there, reducing access to the trading post. Can only be done before starting GW2.

Graphics:

  • Update videocard drivers to at least June 2012. Intel, ATi and nVidia all implemented heavy optimization after BWE#2.

GW2.dat:

  • doing a full repair can fix some issues
  • if you used other languages in the past, deleting and downloading GW2.dat again could potentially shrink the file and improve performance.
  • doing an image update once every so often will significantly speed up loading times.

Hall of Monuments:

  • if Hall of Monuments doesn’t load properly, right click the website > properties > allow pop-ups for this website. It helped for me.

Absolute minimum system requirements:

  • i5 + HD3000 graphics family
  • 4 GB ram
  • If you don’t mind low graphics, this is all that’s necessary.

Feel free to ask questions and PM me to let me know. I’ll update this one accordingly.

Mostly useful information besides the minimum requirements part. The absolute minimum requirements are that ArenaNet specifies at the bottom of this page:
https://buy.guildwars2.com/en/

Edited. I’m using that hardware on my company notebook and I have a relatively smooth experience on lowest, which is why I wrote that. One could go lower I guess.

It’s basically a way to exploit the game. If you have a lot of gold, you can buy a lot of a given item and sell it for a higher price, creating an artificial increase in price. The more gold you have, the more gold you can make through this process, at the cost of making the game a bit worse for everyone else (since you are artificially making it harder for people to get what they want).

If it’s a rare enough item, you can even buy all of it in the market and set a monopoly, selling at a considerable higher price than you bought. This doesn’t work with items that have a huge turnover like Globs of Ectoplasm, but for truly rare items – like precursors – it can be a gold mine.

And you can prove this happens because precursor prices have been extremely stable since january. Oh wait … that actually disproves the theory.

Uh… You do realize we can see the price fluctuations, right? So saying something that is not true like that is kinda pointless. Dusk, for example, has had multiple spikes in price since January, with its price having increased more than 100 gold during the last 30 days. This is not “extremely stable”.

just because something extremely valuable increases by 15% or so doesn’t indicate instability… it just means there was a run in the market by people who want to make an extremely common legendary is all. And no flipper worth their salt would waste their time hoarding dusks to pump them up 100g… minus tp fees they would only be making ~10g per dusk and that is nowhere near worth the time it would take to flip it and the amount of gold one would have to waste floating out there while its waiting to sell.

You’re using facts. Don’t do that. Bad idea.

Guardians, mesmers and warriors have well established cookie cutters that are good for a party (ie. mesmer traitted focus and feedback, guardian hammer for protection and party boons), when you pick up an ele, engy, thief or ranger it’s a gamble to whether they’re bringing anything useful to the table short of having them ping gear and tell you their build (And then you look like a huge elitist when they blurt out “flamethrower spec” or “longbow spec” and boot their kitten

And yet throwing flames seems to be the average elitist spec, given that anyone not meeting their standards is flamed to oblivion.

I don’t even want to play with such people. Elitist comments have me leave immediately, they depress me and I don’t play games to be depressed.

COF1 is a statistical outlier, should be nerfed and therefor can’t be used as “an example”. In almost all other content, the issue you present does not exist. You can’t judge an entire game type by the very narrow and short dungeon path played by a small elitist group of speedrunners.

If you don’t care about elitist speedrun play, you’ll find that you could play anything you like, everywhere. Even rangers are viable in a group of skilled players.

Splitting Accounts Possible?

This might sound rude but I presume it’s the following:
- people buying gems, especially in large amounts, usually have a job
- having a job means 10 hours a day are occupied by earning money
- however these people can easily log in once a day to do a few time gates
- it means people buying gems won’t significantly lag behind people who don’t

It’s a very smart business model ensuring continuing payments by those who actually have the financial means to support the game (and at the same time support society, welfare, etc etc).

The flaw in your coment is I do buy gems frequently in the $100 quantity. You assume I have no income. I think you may be surprised to hear this but there is an ever growing demographic of games players who are retired with lots of both time and money. I think I’m probably in the top tier of players who buy gems in this game.

As you may not have noticed, I"m always very careful to add “on average” and “in general” to such posts. Do not forget that making money is based on averages over large numbers, rather than specific people. If you take an average of society, the people with the most money are the people with jobs, therefor it’d be wise to cater to those people.

However, and let me state this explicitly, every average has exceptions and obviously, you fall within the range of exceptions to this average. That’s unfortunate but I don’t believe retired gamers currently form a financial majority to build a business model around.

If they want to keep me as a high spending customer I’d hope they look to ensuring that players with money and time on their hands aren’t treated poorly.

To my mind there should be some sort of scaling based on an accounts total character count on these time based barriers to accomodate players who have many alts. If there isn’t this old retired man with plenty of money to spend may need to seek a new game where he doesn’t feel punished for playing a game at the rate he does .

That would only work in case of soul-bound crafting materials which would have a full range of problems associated with it. Granted, here should be a way for people like you to play the game to it’s fullest, but it can’t come at the cost of kittening of the large majority of the playerbase.

Sticking it to a heavy spending customer isn’t the best thing to do for a business!

Indeed and that’s why business caters around finding a good target demographic for which you are, unfortunately, an outlier. Let’s hope A.net can find a good solution that doesn’t come at the cost of people with daytime responsibilities.

edit: “(and at the same time support society, welfare, etc etc)” this insinuates that I do neither, you couldn’t be more off base and it is both rude and insulting. Have a nice day.

Again, you’re an outlier. The vast majority of people with 24/7 play timeslots are within either student or welfare demographic, in any case without huge swabs of fun money. I personally find it rude too to play games on welfare, it’s an insult to the 50% in taxes I pay. I think we can agree on my clarification in this post?

Dusk, for example, has had multiple spikes in price since January, with its price having increased more than 100 gold during the last 30 days. This is not “extremely stable”.

Quite the contrary. The fluctuations you see are due to players buying the item, leaving higher priced items as the lowest. These are unattractive and therefor new drops naturally lower the price again. That’s why there’s short spikes while the overall value remains relatively constant.

That’s my interpretation though. You don’t have to be convinced, but I’m not convinced by your pet conspiracy either. Put Dusk on the “all time” and you’ll see a rather constant price with relatively minor spikes here and there.

Again, I don’t need to convince you, but the facts speak for themselves. Unless you have proof, I will stay with the facts. Dusk is currently correctly priced given its enormous popularity.

reason behind time gating quartz?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

marnick.4305

It helps balance no life 24/7 gamers vs people who work for a living and enjoy gaming as a pleasurable hobby…

I work for a living, and enjoy gaming as a hobby. I’m still seriously irritated by the timegating. Especially since (due to work), while i am able to devote lot of time to the game during weekends, Monday-Friday is completely different matter. Especially if i pull an afternoon shift.

This time gating is not casual friendly. Casuals do not play every day, every week, every month all year.

But on the other hand, it doesn’t require 3 hours raids 3 times a week either like it was in WoW to get end-game crafting materials. It’s not necessary to dump hours and hours into farming specific items, which would put hardcore 24/7 players in control of the economy.

By putting everything on daily timers, a casual can choose what he needs, and make meaningful progress without being negatively affected by hardcore players. Making a single quartz takes 10 seconds. Farming a single elemental essence in WoW takes half an hour to two hours. Take your pick.
