GW2-killers

no. First of all, there hasn´t been a single succesful “wowkiller” and that monicker exists only in the audience´s mind anyway, noone in the industry bothers with such nonsense.

I didn’t call GW2 the WoW-killer, it isn’t and shouldn’t be. I specifically said it’ll settle in a comfortable second place (after WoW, obviously). However the media will do exactly that, create a monicker in the audience’s mind. That monicker will be the GW2-killer in 5 years.

And, no offense, the constant stream of subpar MMOs designed to copy WoW proves the point … the industry most certainly bothers. They all want to be that next #1 MMO. GW2 will become #2 by doing something different entirely.

GW2-killers

marnick.4305

The success of Guild Wars 2 can’t be denied. The game innovated on a lot of grounds at a time where MMOs became increasingly stale. It is still in a young phase but if A.net keeps the pace up, this game is bound to be a huge competitor to any other fantasy MMO on the market, and comfortably settle on the second place.

In five years, people will be talking about GW2-killers the way WoW-killers were the trend yesterday. Every new MMO will try to mimic the GW2 success formula, no trinity, shared pve drops and nodes, down-scaling, no gear grind. Even WoW will to do this to an extent to keep their subscriptions up, probably their next expansion is going to be part GW2-clone.

Despite all the hate speech on the forums, the game is incredibly active and very enjoyable. It’s getting better with every patch which is once every 2 weeks. This game is the new standard by which new MMOs will be judged. Let this be my prediction.

I’m really wondering by what margin either is going to win. To me it seems like a no-brainer … Kiel. But apparently some people have set their eyes on Evan for whatever reason that eludes me.

That makes me wonder. Before, I thought it pretty obvious … 80+% for Kiel, but apparently Evan is gaining some fans who didn’t kill Abaddon in the first game or want to buy lots of keys. Maybe it’ll be closer .. maybe Evan would win .. maybe this is just a videogame???

No amount of anything would make me pay money on this game anymore, they had their chance to add serious content and balancing for almost a year, now my money goes to other companies that do add meaningful content..

Too bad you didn’t decide to stop spending time on these forums as well.

One day he’ll realize being able to post is a privilege, not a right and not free either.

@Dante, you’re not required to support the game. You’re not required to play it. You’re not required to whine about it. Feel free to do any of that if you like though. It’s B2P and you’re obviously making the most of that model. But do not be mistaken. Such a blatant claim of non-support effectively means you’re voice has become worthless in the consideration of future content.

What I’m saying is that they abondend their philosophy of not doing vertical progression that impacts gameplay. They didn’t have to abondon that philosophy, but they did.

Ascended is the last gear tier and it was needed to introduce new ways of getting it without requiring the over-farmed ways to get the other gear types. Gold/karma/crafting were flawed and imbalanced designs in the first place, relying only on your luck to get what you need or excessive hours farming at certain places. They didn’t abandon their philosophy, yet, I haven’t seen a constant tier increase with Ascended gear, yet, so until that time comes, the amount of vertical progression in the game is at the bare minimum.

Indeed. He wants to see extreme VP so takes the extremely shallow and optional VP currently in the game and expands that into a flawed argument.

Not even half the gear slots are currently of ascended quality, whereas in other games at the 1 year mark, about 2 full tiers had been released. Furthermore exotic is viable everywhere except fractals.

While there’s a little bit of VP in this game, it is well implemented and I hope it remains at this level for a very long time. After ascended armor comes legendary armor and then nothing.

RNG is the easiest way to make rewards exclusive. It’s a pain but there’s few good alternatives.

Look at the rewards for the meta achievements, they’re hardly special because everyone can get them.

It is very difficult to add a deterministic way to get items, without invalidating those items and without alienating the entire playerbase in the process. RNG handles all that in a relatively smooth way. It’s a lesser of evils if you want.

This is making a mountain out of a lump on the ground. Not even going to bother calling it a molehill as it isn’t even that.

Rewarding loyal customers is something that is actually lacking in a lot of companies and those companies can learn from this and the previous gift.

On the other hand, it illustrates why it’s lacking…

Company: Thanks for being a loyal customer! Here’s some free stuff!

Customer A: I don’t like this free stuff! Give me free stuff I like!

Customer B: Why did you just give me free stuff today? I should get free stuff every day!

Company: Ok, let’s not do that again…

Grind the Bait and Switch

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: marnick.4305

marnick.4305

The grind is what really gets my gears though. How can a company go from 0 power progression to over over 10% disparities on weapons and armor and ridiculous disparities on runes and sigils. That in combination with the trading post being the only viable way of obtaining the items… just look at the prices of the best stat items. How can you expect someone to get a full set of max gear and mods in a day or two like it was so easy to do in Guild Wars? You can’t because the current systems don’t allow it.

Let’s, for sake of argument, assume you’re serious.

A brand new account didn’t get max gear in GW1 and wouldn’t in GW2 either. So let’s assume alts because that’s the only way you could donate max gear.

1/ you’ll have a ton of leftover laurels > rings and amu
2/ depending on activity you’ll have commendations > earrings
3/ back piece depends on your financial situation but southsun backs will do in a pinch
4/ exotic armor costs less than 10 gold in total.

Bam. Fully geared minutes after dinging 80. What are you complaining about?

If you don’t want to spend money on armor, you could run a few dungeons or use karma jugs to get max armor for free.

Indeed this is good news. Everyone liked them. (see what I did there)
Rest assured, these fractals will be shortened, because at their first implementation were indeed too long.

I’m not a big jumper myself but I got 5 out of 7. I gave up on Spekk’s Lab and I’m not going to do fractals.

Personally I like the balance, you never have to get all achievements.

I also liked that we “only” had to open 30 baskets – nice change from 150.

I was a bit skeptic about the sanctum sprint – but ended up really liking it.

In general I really liked this chapter, most likely the best so far or a close second to the MF dungeon.

And even your post can be spun more positive.
Spekks’ Lab is very easy once you realize they’re timed jumps, with plenty of time. Only at one point do you have to think. Apart for that point I did it in the first run.
And each basket drops 2 loot bags, it’s the loot bags so 15 baskets suffice.

As for the Molten Facility, you’ll be happy to know that it’ll return as a fractal before the end of the year (confirmed in the livestream).

A vote for Kiel is a vote for communism. Don’t be fooled by the reduction in waypoint costs, they will be paid for by taxes on the job creators.

Quite the contrary. Reductions in public transport costs creates jobs in city centers and improves overall quality of life in big cities, further stimulating growth. With a near-instantaneous public transport system like waypoints, alternatives are only weighted by their cost in time vs cost in money.

As such, a vote for cheap waypoints is a vote for tax freedom.

Charging Quartz Crystals = Insane

Time gating here is a bit extreme for such a sub-par stats. Not even worth the effort to farm quartz crystals in the first place.

Yes, they probably will do more with them. I care about this when they do.

This is something to keep people using magic find gear playing the game on a daily basis.

Probably there is some connection in getting future funding to the number of individual players logging in per day. That’s IMHO the most likely explanation why they are doing this.

Looks like Anet is in desperate need of higher numbers right now. The achievement chests with more or less recycled items point in the same direction to get more player log in daily, doing their daily to get some more points.

I’ll expect we see more of such time gating in the coming updates…

Time gating is the best way to let casuals enjoy the game. In 2 hours play I can get a ton of stuff through daily chests without repeating content. Hardcores can get the same in 10 hours because the most valuable stuff is in those daily boxes. Because I pay the bills (having a job and playing 10+ hours is mutually exclusive) it’s very logical for a.net to cater to me.

This calender gating helps me by not letting you run off faster than me in a game I pay for.

IMO, buying an ascended piece should permanently remove it from the list for that character until you destroy or infuse it

I have a much simpler solution. Remove the Unique tag from those items – they do absolutely nothing besides causing a lot of misunderstandings.

False. They create a very nice form of shallow vertical progression because people need versatile infusions to min-max. Removing the unique tag would remove that as a system. The system is brilliant but it should be clarified a bit more.

Took me the better part of 7 years, but if you don’t enjoy the game, you’re not getting it period. GW1 ain’t easy, it’s unconventional and requires above all a bit of intelligence … a rare thing in gaming. If you don’t like it, you’re not getting the achievements no matter what.

That said, if you do like it, you should be able to in a few months. You can finish the campaings + hard modes in a weekend if you binge. Depending on which titles you go for, you should get one every day or so. Items are the most difficult but there’s a way to buy gold legally so there’s a short cut.

Removing JP or make them optional

in Living World

Posted by: marnick.4305

marnick.4305

Then do the grind then for the 16 achievements without doing the JPs there are 16 alternatives.

1. Strangers from the Sky
2. Voyage to the Bazaar
3. Ascent to Zephyr Sanctum
4. Diverse Trader
5. Grandmaster of Om
6. Sanctum Sprint
7. Parachute Pilferer
8. Kookoochoo the Incredulous
9. Poor Man’s Kite
10. Kite Bombing
11. Colossal Kites
12. Like Clockwork
13. Crowd Favorite
14. Crystal Obsessed
15. Pickup Completionist
16. Lessons from the Sky/Speedy Sprinter/Sanctum Sprinter/Kites of Iron/Kites of the Night/Best. Dive. Ever.

So yes you have a lot of options. The sky crystals aren’t JPs they are easy to acquire with very little jumping at all. You mostly have to be creative with your 3 abilities. Sanctum Sprint is easy as well and it doesn’t involve jumping except a few vertical ones (which isn’t complex). Best dive is easy to acquire and even if you aren’t that great there is a video by Dulfy that makes it easy and do know Dulfy doesn’t like JPs either but she managed to acquire these achievements. Kites of Iron is easy and it is simply jumps (something I know most people do in this game already moving around). When it shakes just pause and take your time. Kites of Night is easy too and the kite isn’t located at the end either. As you can see you can easily acquire 16 achievements and if you don’t mind grinding then certainly you shouldn’t mind having to try a few times instead of just getting the first time for some of these. Kite Bombing just requires some drops and jumping small gaps very easy to acquire the achievement.

Pretty much it is easy to acquire 16 achievements and for different people it might take more time because you might fail a few times or you just need to put a bit more effort (trial and error). So in a sense you can grind your way to it.

Lastly, the node isn’t mandatory at all it gives something for those that complete the achievements. But if you don’t have it you will just miss out on a few quartz per day which isn’t a big deal. If you wanted the boxes you can always grind the other materials to trade it in and you are willing to grind. On top of that, you can only make one charged per day and most people have an excess amount of quartz around.

I think you didnt do it, 50% of thing you posted are in jp ! ;/

Which ones are jp then? I don’t think you did them, since I have done most of those and they’re definitely not jumping puzzles.
explaining:
kite bombing is a jumping puzzle on hard mode, on easy mode it’s just pve
collossal kite is a dungeon, and a very easy one at that (lvl 1 fractal, kill 2 mobs, get kite)
poor man’s kite is in the open, no jumping or anything.

All other achievements in that list ain’t jumping either.

And then the world bosses would be empty, there’d be 2 – 3 dungeons available (Arah, HotW and Fractals) and level 80’s would be confined to 3 – 4 zones.

I can’t see how the positives (people can play with lower level friends without hindering them, content doesn’t become redundant for higher level players) can be outweighed by someone wanting to feel awesome just because of higher numbers.

then they can add more content

The entire game currently gives loot, experience and all to max level players, and you’re still asking for more content, knowing full well other games only have 1 or 2 top zones?

Do not agree. The downlevelling is what makes this game awesome. I can play in low level areas without being punished, regardless of whether my toon is a BiS main or lowbie alt.

I’ve got two opinions on the matter.

On one hand, forum people not qualified to treat people with OCD, they should find help from the proper channels.

What makes you think people that like to get all the achievements meet the diagnostic criteria for OCD? Achievements and accomplishments are synonymous. For many doing all the achievements gives someone a sense of accomplishment by completing them through game play. Believe it or not, not everyone just does the achievements for a shiny. Sorry it is kind of a pet pieve of mine when people label others based on misconceptions of mental illness.

A lot of threads about achievement hunting start with “I have OCD and that’s why I have a problem with this”. Well… my general response to people with OCD is that we’re not qualified to help them. For people who don’t have OCD, missing a few shouldn’t be that big of a deal. It’s a game after all (point #2 which you failed to add in your quotation)

Misquoting isn’t a nice thing to do, especially because I covered both cases if you put that specific quote in context. Please read and quote an entire post before you pass judgement.

Can Gw2 players get some HoM Pts?

I don’t wanna play gw1, but by logging in they seem to be getting free things.

Wouldn’t call my 50/50 GWAMM free by any means. The reason you don’t want to get it proves it’s quite a bit of effort. That’s why you want it for free.

I’ve got two opinions on the matter.

On one hand, forum people not qualified to treat people with OCD, they should find help from the proper channels.

On the other hand, I don’t like missing out on the story, but life simply isn’t fair. Apparently this is the most effective model for a.net to generate money and that’s their main concern. A million threads won’t make A.net into charity.

Mystic Forge Booster Recipe

This wouldn’t result in a lost gem store sale as I wouldn’t have had any intention of buying the particular booster, I don’t like it to that extent; it’d just be a nice way to get rid of extraneous boosters without throwing them away completely.

So … if I understand correctly…

you want to transmute unwanted boosters into other boosters which you don’t want either? And because you don’t want to spend money for stuff you don’t want, a.net has to waste time implementing a recipe for someone who states he won’t pay money regardless?

Isn’t that a bit silly?

If you don’t want it, destroy it … it’s a freebee anyways.

Glad that that’s what they’re slowly doing.

Polish faster.

Not sure if trolling or simply ignorant. Some things take time. Polishing is not a job one should rush. Bad polish is worse than no polish.

Daily and monthly should be capped, maybe to the equivalent of 356 days and 12 months to show at least some dedication. But honestly, the current implementation is horribly flawed.

^ except that required 50 skill points at a time. Which is a significant barrier. Superior Siege requires ONE skill point per siege weapon.

So low barrier > low gain. If 15s is decent at 50sp, then most surely 8-10s is decent at 1sp.

Eventually this gem><gold thing will force a.net to come up with a properly working RNG box system. They’re well on their way since these fortunues at least have incremental non-luck coupled with the golden ribbons.

Grind the Bait and Switch

The dye thing is a small concern by itself. The broader implication of multiple concepts that penalize players by taking in game currency unnecessarily is that you force players to spend more time or money to get that currency back. The dye thing isn’t even a penalty, but it in combination with other design choices that are penalties do exactly what I’ve described, which ultimately incentivizes players to lean towards shortcuts of getting game currency, which leads to more gem purchases for gold.

Now I’m sure people think I’m nuts, bcs my views are driven by the original Guild Wars, but I expect not to lose time or money to do the following…

Fast travel
Change my build
Death penalty – removing this was skilled play
Get the best stated items
Trading fees – didn’t exist

I expect only to grind for cosmetics and achievements. I also expect that every player have easy access to the best stated gear so that they can’t feel handicapped.

There’s a few things to note here. Sure there were no gold sinks in GW1. Trading fees didn’t exist simply because there was no functional trade system except for spamming in Kamadan.

No gold sinks lead to an extremely inflated economy, to the point where a new player simply couldn’t catch up anymore. Compare this to GW2 where precursor prices have been stable for almost half a year … Inflation is non-existent in this game.

Gold sinks are an economic necessity. The only one I don’t like at all is the waypoint cost. But on average, my gold keeps its value over a long time. As such, buying gems is hardly necessary. Even then, it’s not necessary to buy from the black market like GW1. It all makes for a healthy and stable economy.

PvE'ers: What would it take...

The question is almost as stupid as asking what it’d take for a dedicated WvW’er to get into PVE. It’s rather simple, there’s three types of people in games and those usually don’t change in a lifetime:
- PVE exclusive
- PVP exclusive
- PVX mixed playstyles

The real question being, how to get the PVX players that currently play PVE exclusively into PVP … and that’s not easy.

Has the Exploit Policy changed?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: marnick.4305

marnick.4305

If the bugs didn’t exist in the first place there would be no exploiting…

You just made me puke a bit inside my mouth.
You’re basically saying that if a store owner forgets to lock the door to his store and someone see’s this. Then said person is free to enter the store and take anything he likes as the one at fault is the store owner for forgetting to lock the door?

Court: So Jack, you’re guilty of robbing over 5000$ of money and items in this store. What do you have to say before I sentence you?

Jack: The store owner forgot to lock the door.

Court: But why didn’t you say so? You’re now declared innocent and are free to go with all the money and items you’ve acquired. Case dismissed.

I think a better analogy for these exploits would be that the store owner price marked a $100 item as a $1.00. Yes, the store owner loses money, but the customer didn’t do anything wrong/illegal. As soon as management is made aware they fix the problem.

In stores that usually goes and is the sole problem of the owner. In an MMO, however, generating mass profit out of simple exploits mostly harms other players instead of the company. As such, you’re not stealing from A.net, but from me by inflating the economy. That’s not acceptable even if it is due to A.net’s fault. To keep the playing field even, exploiters have to be justly punished.
