Gw2 will never be what gw1 was..

Let me correct that.

Vanilla GW2 will never be what GW1 was after 3 expansions.

And I agree to that. But GW2 is already leaps and bounds beyond vanilla GW1. I have good hopes for expansions.

So what do soloists do?

in Sky Pirates of Tyria

marnick.4305

I think the idea of solo content in a massively multiplayer online game is ridiculous. I am 100% in favor of group content, or even forced grouping to progress as it builds upon the community that is necessary for an MMO. Solo content creates an every man for himself attitude that does not belong in a game like this.

Yet forced grouping creates an elitist attitude leading to exclusion of the “lesser” people. There should be different content for different people. As it stands, this dungeon is extremely hard, and I like it for it, even though I had to abort at the final boss yesterday sadface

MMO games require content that’s solo just as much as casual group content and hard group content. Given some achievements, even the nigh impossible content is included. I like this patch.

PvP in a PvP area is not griefing.

PvPing PvE players wanting to do a PvE content is.
And if the game intends you to grief, then it’s a problem with the game (unless it is a game purely for griefers, of course, but GW2 is not one of those).

PVP content in a PVP area is not PVE content in a PVE area.

Wanting to play PVP content as PVE content does not make it PVE content. Can’t get slayer or yakslapper achievements through PVE either …

You can’t get yakslapper period

At least not in a normal human lifetime…

That’s what people said about GW1’s hero r12 too.

And remembering HA Rank … PVE’ers whined for years they wanted a non-pvp way to get that emote. I just kittened up and got it legit. I’m 90% PVE but I won’t complain about PVP content being PVP content.

Being killed in a pvp zone designed for ganking is not cause for reporting. The only thing it could accomplish is you getting a temporary ban to reconsider abuse of the report feature.

It’s true that they said they wanted to change fights so that bosses don’t one shot you. The only problem is that it’s very likely that they had started working on this dungeon before they said that.

As it stands, this dungeon is NOT balanced around zerkers for once. Only zerkers get one-shots.

Most gear is visible anyways, besides trinkets maybe. And i dont think theres a lot of wow factor to trinkets.

So what is this game about?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: marnick.4305

marnick.4305

Why does a game need a reward for you to play it? Can’t you just play it for what it is… a game? Can’t you just play it, because it’s fun?

I’m asking about the goal of the game… Why? Because it is a game! I have fun playing it. But without a goal… I just don’t see any reason to. It’s just like with any other game.

Guild Wars is NOT a virtual reality where you have fun all the time. It’s a game! And as one it needs to have rules and goals.

So what’s the goal of other games exactly and how does this differ from GW2? The goal of chess is to checkmate the other player within a certain time limit. After that, you set up the board again in the exact same way as the first game. There is no progression, no rewards. You don’t get an extra queen for playing 100 games. If anything, you lose your queen against a weaker player.

The goal of GW2 is to get a legendary and BiS gear. Once you’re done with that, you start on the next character. Alternatively, you could start achievement hunting, you could get nice looking characters or play WvW or PVP. There’s a lot of potential goals. The only thing you need to do is open your eyes and look for them. This game doesn’t spoonfeed you like WoW used to do.

Either game should be fun. If you don’t like to play chess, don’t. If you don’t like the rules of chess, don’t. If you want ever more queens, stop playing chess. If you don’t like GW2, you can log out and never look back.

Yeah, you know those red poppies all over GW? Yeah, that’s Europe in the spring. So I’m on my Grand Tour of Europe and by Germany, I can hear the background music while I’m walking around the ruined castles. Ruined? Right, clearly the Charr had come through, taking down those stone towers. From the ground, we could totally see where to climb on the crumbled walls to get to the top, where SURELY there was a map to view. If only I had my staff, I would have given it a try, but I suspect those pesky Ascalonian ghosts were waiting for me and I couldn’t find a waypoint.
It was pretty surreal to see the game come to life like that IRL.

Funny how I didn’t see that as a European … I have a castle in my street my entire life and a few “jumping puzzle” type tower ruins in the neighborhood. Most larger parks have at least something to climb on. Make sure to bring decent shoes.

We don’t have ghosts here though, you’ll find those in Romania.

Warriors should be nerfed because they’re overpowered in PVE. Any nerfs are 1/ fully necessary and 2/ long past due.

I don’t have a grudge against warriors specifically, it’s just that the PVE is entirely lopsided in favour of 2 professions and raw damage. Conditions and control are worthless which is to the detriment of three professions. PVE needs balance too.

……..You can tell though, there were no massive changes to anything. Concerning the warrior most of the trait changes were nerfs and not a single area of major issue was even addressed by them.

You wouldn’t know how happy that makes me. Warriors are insanely overpowered in PVE, and a few targeted nerfs are long past due. Whether those nerfs should have been split for PVP is up for debate, but PVE-wise, I couldn’t be happier. Furthermore, I don’t believe warriors will be weak now, just brought back in line, probably still overpowered to a degree.

Let’s hope Engineer/Ranger/Necro becomes a bit more viable in PVE with this patch …

Why would that make you happy? Having classes be essentially useless in PvP and PvE hurts the game overall………….necros and ranger are a great example of this in PvE. It shows both the ineptitude of designers and their inability to focus on longstanding balance issues in the game.

I want warriors to be balanced in PVE. Currently they’re vastly overpowered. As such, I’m very happy with nerfs to warriors because it’ll make the game a bit more balanced, not because they make warriors useless.

Sincerely not interested in the effect on PVP, although I’ve got no problems with skill splits.

OP is hurt because gem prices are high, which is only because players are too cheap to buy them with cash and not enough of a cheat to convert to gold.

Even though this is a B2P game, you were always expected to use gems to support the game. It was known before launch to be the business model, however the gold>gem conversion was only implemented for people without the income levels to play a game (in effect, poor people who couldn’t pay a monthly fee either).

That said, the economy in this game is better than any other game I’ve played, with almost 0% inflation for almost half a year. That’s remarkable.

Gear Grind or People leave.....

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

marnick.4305

Out of interest what did people farm/play end-game for in GW1?

That game had virtually no gear progression. You could get max stat gear very easily and cheaply (sometimes before you hit level 20) and even the cosmetic armor upgrades (elite armor sets) were relatively cheap. Sure the runes and insignias could be expensive for a popular build, but even then I managed to kit out 3 characters and their heroes without ever farming. There were some very expensive weapons, but they were purely cosmetic, any gold or green weapon had equal stats.

And yet people sent years at end-game, and many of them spent the majority of that time farming. This is a genuine question BTW, I could never understand why they did it, but I find it even stranger that if they could find a reason with no gear-grind at all people can’t find the same (or similar) reasons in GW2.

It was all cosmetics. The kind of a big deal track involved tons of farming and grinding, yet no power boost was added. I farmed the entire Luxon title by clearing Mount Qinkai over and over, I did it because it was NOT bound to a power increase (the few shoddy title skills were of no interest to me).
While watching shows like Lost and Prison Break, I had a timer running for the drunkard title, which required 10 000 minutes of attention. Yet drunkard didn’t give me a power boost.

Farming can only hold my attention for any times if and only if it’s NOT bound to power increase.

Sure, while you’re leveling. Then you hit a ceiling at level 80, which is what the thread is about.

But how far do you want the characters to progress? Until it’s too ridiculous to go well with the story?

I will confess Mirta, I do not care for the story at all. Having said that, I don’t think it would be too hard for Anet to come up with some kind of explanation or backstory as to why this dude is stronger than the last one etc. Dragonball Z did it all the time

But if you have new gear, the new guy isn’t really stronger nor more difficult. 10=10 just as much as 20=20. The numbers are bigger but nothing really changed. You are still beating content that’s just as challenging as the last content.

It’s a very strong illusion but people who know the trick only see smoke and mirrors. There’s no actual progression. David Copperfield didn’t vanish the Statue of Liberty either, once you know what he did, it’s a very simple trick.

So what is this game about?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: marnick.4305

marnick.4305

Developers gives you new ways to acquire more powerful items and then you can use those items to overcome certain challenges and receive even more powerful gear or other rewards like unique skins or mounts.

In other words, other MMORPGs are about rewarding time spent in gear treadmills. As flawed as GW2 is, I’m happy it’s not about that (yet). Regardless, this game has been released more than six months ago, had you done a minimum of research about it you would have learned that no, gear treadmill isn’t the focus of GW2. Buying without research = “a fool and his money…”.

So what is the focus in this game?! I’m trying to find this game goal and as far as I know there is none!

It’s not about leveling.
It’s not about any other type of character progression.
It’s not about cooperative challenging content.
It’s not about killing ancient dragon anymore – everyone already did it.
It’s not about gear grind – I get it that some people may consider gear grind as a bad thing. But give us something else to do instead! And ascended gear… Please… 5% of boosted stats without any purpose. Only agony resistance is something to work for. But it’s not even nearly as rewarding as it should be.

So how about a nice game of freecell instead?

Why does a game need a reward for you to play it? Can’t you just play it for what it is … a game? Can’t you just play it, because it’s fun?

I didn’t need to play chess a thousand times to unlock the queen. It’d be such a bad game if that was part of the mechanics …

Achievement Points

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

marnick.4305

Wasn’t that the point of achievements in the first place to be something we could show of and say “hey look what crazy thing I managed to pull off”

Marketing happened. Achievements are an easy way to create additional content at little cost. They provide a goal where otherwise, there’d be no reason to do something except to just be doing it. They’re now just used as a trick to make you feel like you’re being rewarded, when really, all you’re getting is a line of text.

When the casual market joined in, difficult content had to be made easier to appease the masses. Why develop hard content when only the 1% will be able to do it. During this transition, achievements went from being something rare and challenging to being something that everyone had and if you didn’t, you were bad.

Wasn’t that the whole point of the occupy movement, that the masses shouldn’t suffer for the actions of a few. The inconvenient truth being that casuals are a greater market share than hardcores, plus that market share actually has the financial means to support the game (since hardcore gaming and having a job+family are mutually exclusive). So not only does the casual market have the absolute numbers, they also have the financial trump card. It makes sense to cater to the rich majority instead of the hardcore minority.

That said, I don’t think casual content equals easy content. Imho, casual means time limited. Casual content should never take more than 20 minutes to complete. Guild Missions are by no means easy, but they have a 15 minutes timer which makes them perfect for casual yet hard play.

Usually calling, emailing or texting works for my friends.

For playing together, you only have to make sure you’re in the same region since you can guest for free (unless you want to do WvW)

Farming skill points?

But to obtain 60 SPs in FoTM costs 2100 tokens. Which is rather expensive, and better used for a backpiece on alts.

If you only need 60 more skill points, I’m fairly sure the alts can wait. At FotM20 you get almost 4 skill points in tokens.

Use an XP booster and socket your amulet with the XP infusion. Do events or dungeons with plenty of mobs. Orr would be a good place, AC also has plenty of trash. In FotM you have the added luxury of getting skill points for tokens.

Next update, there’ll also be a scavenger hunt for 5 skill points.

Marjory's Journal... Preferred a Jade ticket.

Just hear me out. It’s kinda worthless because, well, if anyone wanted to relive the scene again they could just watch it on youtube or something >.>. I personally think a jade ticket would have been more appropriate considering the work and guarantee for everyone to get one of the rarest drops in the event.

Doesn’t that sentence defeat itself? If a drop is rare, it shouldn’t be guaranteed. If it’s guaranteed, it’s no longer rare. The journal requires no work (20 minutes tops).

To make it rare, you either hide it between atrocious RNG or obscenely expensive (think cultural gear). I’d prefer 2000 gem tickets.

Who is E?

Probably has nothing to do with the letter E, it’s just a pseudonym. Might have been X too but that’s too cliché.

Going back to the Rich Dragon Coffers, that guy who opened 75 of them, he could have spent the equivelant of 75 U.S. Dollars, or he could have bought the Gems (which at the exchange rate is 210 gold), we don’t know. Either way,….just Wow…

I’m a bit undecided about this. On one hand, no sane person would use actual real money for the rich dragon coffers. I’m betting he spent 210 gold, which is rather cheap for prestige items. 75 euros is a bit on the expensive side though. It just shows conversion rates aren’t high enough yet. At 5gp/100gems it’d be a bit more in the right direction.

That said, I’m usually not convinced by people who complain about gem items costing too much gold. The gem store should be about real money first and foremost. The box argument is the only one where it holds merit though, because sane people don’t spend 75 euros on a weapon skin. It does fuel gem conversion rate upwards which is good for the casual player.

Again, I’m undecided. There should be a way to do this properly.

So what is this game about?

I think it’s mostly about having fun, which is exactly what I need after a hard day’s work.

For that, I don’t need nor want ultrahard content, gear grind or other nonsensical stuff that punishes me for not keeping up.
