Not to mention, many people I play with would qualify in the communities’ eyes as ‘hardcore’ and have jobs, or family or study at university etc. Just like the casuals have jobs, family, or study at university. Both sides spend money on the game, until you have any statistics that ‘casuals’ spend more, your argument holds no water and is pure speculation.

My definition of hardcore is 5+ hours a day, at least 6 days a week. Consistently.
That’s not compatible with having a job and a family.

My definition of casual is max 2 hours a day, 3-4 days a week. Often less. Often takes week long breaks.
Let’s not forget that even that time commitment is pretty hardcore when compared to non-gaming hobbies.

Portrayal of Males in Living Story

in Living World

Posted by: marnick.4305

marnick.4305

The Living Story is littered with female empowerment plots, unfortunately one of the most commonly used ones is the poor portrayal of male characters as a mechanism to make the females look good. I like it when stories have powerful female characters, but I resent when it’s done at the expense of male characters.

For two thousand years a book with male empowerment plots has dominated our culture. Now there’s a story with a few females in the lead, and suddenly all hell breaks loose?

You only perceive it to be that way because you’re not used to females in power, neither in stories nor in real life. Magnus is the leader of LA, and last time I checked he was still male. A lot of dungeon bosses are males (eg Adelbern). The entire Sons of Svanir plot revolves around male empowerment. Where were you with the personal story being all about males succeeding? The dungeon story is about destiny’s edge and that’s mostly about Rytlock and Logan reconciling. Logan looks far more masculine in that story while Caithe is the love sick girl. Did I hear you complain back then?

Just cherry picking a few in the Living Story doesn’t make this a bad thing. Maybe the next plot is all about a man rescuing an 8 bit princess in distress. I’m waiting for your thread complaining about that story having male supremacy themes.

How GW2 Appeals To The 'Casual Kid' In Us

Yeh its pretty sad.Its build like this so people below the age group of 15 can play.Lill girls and boys will go awwwwwww over “A bow that shoots rainbows and unicorns”.Can.t blame Anet though, they make this game for money they couldn’t careless if its childish. They just want to keep churning out temp content so they can put those temp items in the gem shop to sell later.

What’s your age? Because I have a strong feeling you’re too young to properly enjoy games like GW2. Maybe in 10 years, once you’re 26 or older, maybe with responsibilities such as a job or your own kid, maybe then you’ll appreciate a game like this.

How GW2 Appeals To The 'Casual Kid' In Us

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: marnick.4305

(1)Unlike the popular MMOs that came before, Guild Wars 2 does not depend on progression. You do not feel obligated to play, as you have no reason at all to sign in, unless you are signing in to get into the temporary content before it vanishes. No obligations, no responsibilities, and as much incentive to log into the game as there is to log into Farmville (actually, maybe less obligation/responsibility to sign into GW2 as there is to sign into Farmville).

Play when you want, as long as you want, take as long of a break as you want, and you miss out on nothing important.

Which is good. Games should be like that. Taking a break isn’t a bad thing.

(2)Guild Wars 2 is easy. Because Guild Wars 2 lacks the ‘holy trinity’, there is much less responsibility in GW2’s PvE. Essentially, everyone is responsible for themselves, similar to how DPS classes play in other MMOs.

Untrue. In other MMOs DPS doesn’t even have to be responsible for themselves. That’s up to the healer and tank. This means that bar for those two, everyone has MORE responsibilities. As such, DPS in this game is already vastly more complex than other games.

(3)Remember when you were a kid, and everything was new, big, awesome, and wonderous? Guild Wars 2 is filled with wonder. Bright colors, flashy particles, scantily-clad fantasy armor, and huge raids of players all smacking one champion mob. The feeling is epic, and you definitely get lost in that sense of wonder.

Which is good. I love epic gameplay and GW2 provides it. I’m a big kid.

(4)Repetitive, easy-to-follow content. As stated in reason #2, Guild Wars 2 demands very little skill and thought, and mostly relies on fast reflexes (dodging, mob avoidance i.e. ‘running past’). Also as stated in reason #3, recent (and all foreseeable future) content is based around big zergs of people all smacking the same big zergs of mobs. Zero strategy, zero thought, zerg after zerg, hour after hour of farming and farming, and little to no responsibility, save for dodging at the right time.

How’s that different from the default 25man zergy tank-and-spank raid without any responsibilities in other games?

To summarize: Guild Wars 2 appeals very much to the ‘casual kid’ in all of us due to:
-Little responsibility (see last bulletpoint below)
-Little to no obligation to play (not missing out on content or any meaningful sort of reward)
-Lots of flashy colors and particles
-Huge epic zergs
-Easy mechanics for PvE (and drop in, drop-out system for PvP, which I didn’t get a chance to mention)

Hopefully that answers questions from people as to why GW2 is appealing to some people, and why people continue to play it! Thanks for reading

You’re trying to frame that as a bad thing but I’m a casual and a big kid. I don’t complain. If you’re a hardcore raider wishing for frustrating content … WoW’s that way.

The last thing I want when getting home from work is 30 "hardcore"people screaming in my ear while I roll a boring rotation against a generic raid boss for 4 hours straight. I just want to roll in, have fun and alt+f4 when my wife shouts dinner’s ready. I couldn’t in WoW and can in GW2.

@marnick – “Delayed content is eventually good. Rushed content is eternally bad. ~ Shigeru Miyamoto” isn’t this in your sig?

or am i missing something fundamental or takign taht out of context?

Which specifically references Ocarina of Time, despite many delays and a complete scrap, becoming the best game ever made. And guess what, it has tons of bugs. The amount of bugs does not define the quality of a game.

i’m not so much about the bugs. i know it’ll happen. rather, now, i get the feeling that i’m rushing to play the content. not saying i don’t enjoy it, but i PERSONALLY wouldn’t mind more “down time” between content updates.

I like the frequency of updates, and the amount of bugs is most certainly acceptable. What I prefer is more permanent content, but that’s not relevant to the discussion at hand.

I’ve been a gamer since I first saw a brand spanking new 386 back when I was 4 years old. It’s actually the first memory I have. I don’t mean this as an insult but I’ve probably got more time played than you’ve lived. I dialed back quite a bit after getting a job, but gaming is still my primary hobby for almost a quarter century now.

Nope, got ya beat. Tandy 1000.

Touché

For sake of argument, could I please ask your age?

You could…..but age doesn’t make arguments more, or less relevant.

It does when you trash talk the best game ever made. Such comments most often come from teenagers who can’t stand the brilliant Nintendo games for being “too childish”.

You’re comment sounded rather negative, maybe I merely misread in which case I apologize.

I stand by my original point though. My job is to solve industrial automation problems and one of my default questions before doing something is “Can I kill someone when I press this button?”. From that perspective, these issues you point out are less than minor. The game works just fine, with or without them. I don’t have that luxury.

No culling, how does it work?

I have to say, I’m super happy to finally be able to see your bright shining faces in game, however…..what I really need to see are the enemies.

One of the biggest issues for me in this game has been enemies not loading. Now that culling is turned off, do enemies load (even if they’re only basic models), or is it limited to players?

If it does just affect players, I would like to see an option to apply this to enemies. I NEED to see enemies.

I haven’t had any problems seeing NPCs, but, PCs all I see are name tags floating in a train to next event until location is reached and then characters will start appearing, I even have tags turned off. What I do like is the fact that my FPS has tripled since the new story update which I don’t understand.

That’s called optimization. You know, the thing which doesn’t happen according to some trolls.

Agree. Communication nor rollback happens in other games. A.net apparently cares enough to give people a chance at increased karma. That’s a first in MMO gaming.

I’m not sure you’ve played a lot of games. I don’t mean this as an insult, but that is a wildly inaccurate statement.

I have yet to run into crucial issues. Maybe I’m too smart for these issues to bother me.

I’ll ignore your little jab at anyone who it may bother (and refrain from reversing that). There have been many issues that have caused some to become wealthy, while others can’t even complete the content (AKA The Candidate Trials).

I’m happy you haven’t run into crucial issues, but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist.

Such “issues” don’t impact me. I’m not the jealous type. Despite my boss earning a hundred times more than me, I’m pretty happy with what I earn.

MMOs have these kinds of small issues. I kinda like them. Gives flavor. I don’t think the latest living story has more of those than any other content update in any other MMO game.

Sigh….What? You fall from a Jumping Puzzle which causes your account to be suspended for a few days and you, what…clap your hands and say, “Spicy!” and bound away happy?

Also, what other games do is not relevant. The, “Ya, well they do it too, so that makes it ok!” argument really isn’t very good.

It makes it inevitable. Games are not nuclear power plants. There’s a slightly larger margin for error when it comes down to fun.

And yet, lots of updates generate more money than few ones that don’t have those minor typos. These are not real issues. The content more or less works as intended. For games, that’s enough.

More or less huh? ANet…give this person a job!

I’ve got a job thank you very much. At a certain point one has to choose whether added polish is worth it. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn’t. I’m not of the opinion that everything has to be perfect.
Once it works to a certain degree, it’s good to ship. The amount of perfection necessary is obviously different between projects. A game can have some bugs, that’s not a problem. A nuclear power plant shouldn’t have a single issue. If you can’t understand that, I’d recommend getting a job in IT. You’ll find out soon enough.

I don’t want to be condescending, but there’s only so much you can do in a given amount of time. Games are rather unique in having the option of not being perfect in favor of shipping more fun content. Often the second choice is the preferred one by gamers.

Ocarina of Time has been in development for almost 10 years. Despite being considered the best game ever made, it still has tons and tons of minor and major bugs. Who cares.

I’ll go out on a limb here…and say….oh, the people who play Ocarina of Time.

For sake of argument, could I please ask your age?

1/ the karma change is minor. Such things usually don’t get communicated in other games. A.net reverting this is the exception to the rule. Don’t complain.

What is minor depends on your goals. For those who were holding stacks and stacks of Karma with the idea of trading it all in (for legendaries, armour, etc), it can be very annoying to have a miscommunication mess with that.

In this case, while it may be “minor” it is still not very professional. While I’m happy they were so quick to roll it back, it is something that shouldn’t have happened in the first place.

Agree. Communication nor rollback happens in other games. A.net apparently cares enough to give people a chance at increased karma. That’s a first in MMO gaming.

2/ typos and minor glitches happen in other games too. Check the GW1 wiki with random pages. There’s quite some with bugs, anomalies and other weird stuff. Some of that hasn’t been fixed since launch.

Yes, and we expect these things. The problem is when you add these issue with time sensitive content. What is a minor inconvenience normally, can become a game changing issue for someone trying to complete a task, or spend real money.

[/quote]
I have yet to run into crucial issues. Maybe I’m too smart for these issues to bother me.

3/ a trend? You never played GW1 right? “Fixed miscellaneous crash bugs” was part of every update, even years into the game.

I’m not sure what GW1 has to do with this. My point is that the faster you pump out content, the less time you have to test it. So if they’re going to pump it out, they need to put more resources into testing.

MMOs have these kinds of small issues. I kinda like them. Gives flavor. I don’t think the latest living story has more of those than any other content update in any other MMO game.

And you’re kinda right. This is complex software. But it’s not critical software. No human lifes are at stake. Pushing content makes people more happy than delaying polished content. This content has to be quick, whether it’s done well are bonus points but by no means necessary. That’s what hotfixes are for.

No, but money is. When you involve real money, these things become a lot more of an issue. I personally don’t see the appeal of quantity over quality. Sure, it’s “something” to do, but it can be a frustrating experience.

And yet, lots of updates generate more money than few ones that don’t have those minor typos. These are not real issues. The content more or less works as intended. For games, that’s enough.

I am not asking for a “functional” 1st Person View like that in the upcoming Elder Scroll Online. I simply want a 1st Person View to explore and navigate tight spots when exploring the world and doing puzzles.

Is there any reason why ArenaNet would not give us this most simple yet most useful feature that requires minimum effort of their part? Do they simply enjoy torturing us…. torturing me?

That’s a pretty hefty claim for something that’s been asked for since first beta. I’d wager it’s a bit more difficult than you’d think.

People are indeed waiting for it but please don’t say such silly things. It makes you look rather uninformed. It’s probably on the list of Quality of Life improvements that are steadily getting into the game now.

Was this hinted at in a blog post or something? I know what they’ve said in the “looking ahead 2013” post, but nothing seems as game breaking as you’re making it seem. Especially since dev’s have said a couple of times now, no new zones and no new big dragon fights this year.

They’ve made a few clear hints that the living world team is just a small part of the development team, and that the majority of the company is working on something. The Christmas part is my own guess but it seems like a good time for massive publicity.

Got no idea what they’ve got up their sleeve but other dragons are coming some day. No idea when.

When it comes down to BiS, we’re all on even footing.

And that’s too bad. Instead of dull and easy activities with time gated rewards, BiS gear should be available from skill-based progression and high risk-high reward content.

A healthy MMO needs both casual and hardcore players. The latter don’t have much to do here.

A healthy MMO needs a large playerbase. Hardcore players are a small minority. Large playerbase minus the 2% hardcore people is still large. I’d say cater to the casuals. You’ll keep a larger active playerbase.

Not only that, but casuals usually have more money to waste. People tend to cherish their one hobby more after a long work day with paid extra hours (which is the primary cause for casual gaming styles). The people that just as well dump a thousand euros into a racebike they use once a month. I’d say cater too the casuals, you’ll have a playerbase with more money to spend.

WARNING: I don’t want to put every hard core player in the same bucket, but the fact is that hardcore play is not compatible with most well paid jobs.

This LS was really fast to complete. I play 1-2 hrs daily, and in 3-4 days I already had it, since even the dailies gives you achievements towards it. So, 2 weeks to 1 month shouldn’t be a problem, even with casual players.

You presume 1-2 hours daily is the standard? Let me give you a slight hint. It’s not. It’s not rare for people to have been on a holiday in this month, entirely missing out on 2 content cycles. Let me rephrase that. It’s the default for people to go on holiday in the summer, entirely or partly missing out on 2 updates cycles.

Not that I mind my holiday nor the frequent content, but it does leaves a sour taste about GW2. I really like GW2, it’s the only videogame I play. Missing content is like missing the quarter finals in a major league or an episode of lost, except you can rewatch them at your leisure if you’d like. Just to put this in perspective. Why I don't see myself leaving any time soon

Indeed, OP sums it up neatly. End-game for WoW has two main parts:
1/ repeat the same boring tank&spank content
2/ wait until a patch destroys your character
rinse repeat

It’s not fun. GW2 is fun mostly because the gear progression is so shallow.

You can say whatever you want but those boss fights in WoW were awesome, I played WotlK and had to luck to participate in some ICC raids (the last raid tier in the expansion if I recall correctly) and I had so much fun with it. They really brought the whole “red circles are bad” thing to a new level, a level I would love to see in GW2.

The first time they were awesome, I totally agree. To do them a million times because those stupid shoulders won’t drop is another thing entirely. To have every encounter be a variation on the same shallow mechanic was ever more boring. Each expansion added insult to injury by removing all the gear I spent so much time collecting. After the third time I was completely done with that.

I did look at your charts. Most of them show a slight decrease since 10th of august, others show a non-significant rise. Only ecto rose quite a bit but that’s hardly an argument. If you look at the all time charts, it’s hard to notice anything but low prices across the board.

Indeed, OP sums it up neatly. End-game for WoW has two main parts:
1/ repeat the same boring tank&spank content
2/ wait until a patch destroys your character
rinse repeat

It’s not fun. GW2 is fun mostly because the gear progression is so shallow.

I’d much rather have my pick out of ten time gates, than be forced to grind the same mob over and over. It’s not like I could do more than a single FotM12 per day so it doesn’t negatively impact me at all. The only thing it does is making sure no-lifers can’t run away from me too fast.

By making the interesting stuff time restricted, I don’t feel forced to quit my job or divorce my wife to keep up with the game like grinders such as WoW or Aion tend to do. This game doesn’t force me to do anything and I like it the way it is.

When joining such dungeons, make a screenshot at the start with all the names and guild tags, especially if 2 or more are the same. Do the same after they tell you they sold your spot. That’s evidence leading to an inevitable ban. Tell them that, and that you’d like your spot back. If they don’t give it, send in the screenshots to a.net and have them banned fair and square.

Whatever you do, do not use foul language to any rude remarks. Just take their BS to the face because that improves your chances of having them banned.

Queen Jubilee is a Toxic Patch.

in Queen's Jubilee

marnick.4305

So let’s see how the price of materials have gone through the roof since the update, by comparing the prices between August 5 and today :
Charged Core : 96 silver, now 83 silver (kind of a bumpy graph)
Charged Lodestone : 2g64s to 2g35s
Globs : 19s to 24s
Giant Eyes : 73s to 74s
Crystalline Dust : 11s to 15s
T6 Blood : 32s to 34s
T6 Claws : 15s to 11s
Dye : 19s to 21s

Point of this : prices dropped a little for materials that could be found more easily during this event (certain T6, some lodestones). The other materials which didn’t have an increase in drop rates didn’t see their price go through to roof.
Exotics and rare ? Players are getting them by the truckload…that won’t increase their price on the TP…just look at the new weapon skins and how some sellers are eager to cut down the price just to be sure to sell their item. In just a day, Entropy dropped from 400g to 189g and now it’s at 43g…

How about some perspective and context instead. The article references NCSoft lay-offs due to CoH and Aion closing doors. The title of the article is merely an eye catcher yet has nothing to do with Guild Wars 2 nor Arena.net.

This is game development 101. Almost every game developer does this once the product is released. The people they don’t need they trim the fat off, because guess what. They don’t need them any more.

DIRTY CAPITALISTS… oh wait. These guys leave with a top industry reference for working on the most successful MMO since WoW. They have free entry into the company of their choice at six figure salaries. There’s worse things in life.

Clover for Legendairy Weapon / Soulbound.

The system works. Fortune has two meanings, either being extremely lucky or extremely rich.

For 77 clovers at the 1 recipe you’re almost guarantueed to get them around the 250 mark. That indicates fortune.

For the 10 clover recipe, you could potentially get all by the 8th try, or have nothing by that time. It indicates luck.

Pick your choice.

Not only that, but you always get a price for losing, a price that’s invariably useful to your legendary quest.

Would you settle for a 5 ecto > 1 clover guarantueed recipe?

- Tyria: Dreadnaught’s Drift boss fractal to kill Maw the Mountain Heart.
- Elona: Moddok Crevice: Skilled bonus stuff allows for speedclear mechanic.

“masculine” pronouns are historically gender neutral

Given that all Roman emperors were males, this is a pretty silly thing to say. Being emperor was anything but gender neutral.

the very acknowledgement of distinguished pronouns for each gender is, itself, sexism. this thread is hypocrisy

Did you ever study latin or classic greek? Distinguished pronouns have been used for thousands of years.
That’s not to say masculin pronouns were the default, but that merely points to male superiority during the last 5000 years. To deny that is, indeed, sexism. To equate criticism to sexism with sexism itself is nothing short of hypocrisy.

I know this is in the Tin foil hat area but could those bots be run by the company that made the game designed to up the economy?

Tin foil hat area is immediately discarded in my books. Evidence go before meaningless accusations. Not only that but slander is illegal in my country which marks your post because it’s not allowed to post illegal things in this forum (read the eula)

Either way it shows how broken the Trading post is.

It shows the TP works just as well as the real world economy which, despite all it’s flaws, still gives us electricity, computers, games and the internet. What’s your alternative to the TP?
Saying something is broken without evidence nor potential improvements makes your post rather shallow in content.

So what you’re saying is … you act like a bot to accuse others of being a bot. Not only that but the bot is actually closing gaps so people get a more fair and stable price?

What’s the difference between a bot doing this, and a player doing this and how does it negatively affect anyone (since the person selling the legendary with get a fairer price under bot-driven economics)

What’s the problem? You really think the TP would be better without bots actively stabilizing prices and closing exploitable price gaps?

Just watch lowest prices for rare weapons (To lv 72-80). Before this hard-farming prices were 17s and If you were Lucky 16. Now it’s 20.50s Only for few item, Then we’re already 22-23s. This farming is terribile and ruin the game. Expecially those farming in Orr. They dont even care about dead people and Keep rushing To another Champion. Really, What game permits that?

Every other game, but to a much harsher degree, eg letting you die so they can kill your tagged champion or grab your rare mining node. If you never played an MMO before, trust me, this is a vast improvement already.

That said, none of your examples show a significant price hike since august 7th. If anything, prices have lowered a little bit.
