So basically, we have to keep ourselves alive and work as a team to get through dungeons. What’s wrong with that?

Work as a team? Are we playing the same (PvE) game. My teams seem to work like this.

  1. Get in group
  2. No need to speak to anyone unless someone doesn’t know what to do
  3. Wait for cut scenes.
  4. Skip what needs to be skipped
  5. Kill what needs to be killed.
  6. Type in /s “P2 P3?” or “Ty”

Repeat.

There is no teamwork. Those player may as well be DPS bots or NPCs. Nothing I can do will save them nothing they can do will save me. And we are all better off DPSing our faces off and just avoiding damage in the first place.

that’s been my experience too. DPS bots all in zerker cookie cutter builds across the board, no purpose to anyone just DPS down the boss a total #1 spam fest in dungeons.

They wouldn’t harm anything by adding trinity lite to the game, not in the slightest. By adding the choices for CC condition damage and support fixing them so they are relevant again they’d actually be improving the combat for many.

What’s the difference between this and looking for healbots/tankbots? I don’t really interact with healers during a dungeon except for the hour it takes to recruit one.

As far as the control/support trinity goes, sure that should be buffed immensely since these actually influence teamplay.

Ecto Salvage Rates Again.......

Remember guys, the one time people were actually right about ecto salvages, people were posting sample sizes of 4000+.

Would cost about 880g assuming each rare is about 22s each. Someone should do it :p
although seriously speaking the salvage rate should end up with either a profit or breaking near to even so if someone does spend the 880g to salvage 4000+ rares (oh forgot to factor in salvage kit costs) they probably wouldnt lose much.

But unless you’re willing to do the test, you can’t make a point. People were doing these tests because they were so convinced something was up, and the test was done on video to have absolute results. Since, no one has done such tests which very much puts any theory to rest, until such test is performed.

One piece of evidence trumps all rumours in the world.

I don’t get it…
Trahearne is not that bad a guy, why all the hate?

People do not like him mainly because they think he “stole their story”; that Trahearne is the main character of the Personal Story, not the player.

My only problem with him is the voice acting to be honest. He doesn’t sound inspiring, and as the leader of the Pact, he should be. I forgive him, though, because he loves the PC so much and he always make sure that we know how important we are for him. I used to hate him, but now I believe that there are characters that are worse than him (I am looking at you, Kiel). I am not a huge fan of Trahearne, but I don’t mind him that much anymore.

I totally agree. But that’s not the only problem with Trahearne’s voice. As the main character of the story, he’s utterly boring to listen to for hours. Search for Andrew Schlafly on youtube, he’s equally awkward to listen to.

Furthermore, it’d been nice if the orders swore allegiance to the players, with Trahearne as the chief advisor to the player. This would have made the story so much more enjoyable, without even changing much. As a scholar, that’s his rightful place and should make his voice less problematic.

If you consider human activity organized around a goal, from a scavenger hunt to brain surgery, the first thing sorted out is who is going to do what. Humans organize themselves by role.

But the rules are still the same for everyone, regardless of roles. In cycling, everyone has the same rules, even though everyone in a team has different responsibilities. In basketball each position has it’s own role yet everyone plays by the same rules.

Nice example in GW2 is the end boss of dredge fractal. Immediately a role has to be assigned, but the person acting that role doesn’t suddenly have a different rule. Furthermore, this role is very much dependent on team play.

On the other hand, healers and tanks are forced because they serve under a different rule set. Furthermore, these roles rarely force real team play, rather the contrary. A healer has its own self-contained minigame which has absolutely no influence on the boss fight as long as the minigame is performed correctly. Influence from other players is likewise minimal at best. Same for the tank. As long as he plays his minigame correctly, it has absolutely no bearing on what other players do or don’t.

As far as ectos are concerned, these are easily farmed with a variety of activities. Keep your eye on the dragon timers, do a few dungeons and you can easily farm 20 ectos on any given evening, or about 100 in a day.

Trinity is like playing soccer. One player plays by different rules (can use hand) and therefor the entire team hinges around his ability to protect. If a goal comes through, it’s almost always the goalkeeper’s fault. Such unbalanced rules lead to problems like hooliganism, extremely stale gameplay (one goal in 90 minutes is enough) and an overall appeal to the masses. It does make soccer a popular sport but it sure isn’t the best.

Next, compare to cycling or basketball. Everyone plays by the same rules which actually forces proper teamplay. Once you get into the strategy of these sports, it’s crazy how deep the rabbit hole goes on a meta level. However this forces deep understanding of the game mechanics and a bit more active intelligence to enjoy the game properly. It also leads to active and compelling gameplay throughout the game.

Guild Wars 2 does have team play, but it’s not as obvious to the naked eye. The whack-a-mole healing in trinity gameplay is like the goalkeeper. He plays a different game entirely and frankly doesn’t matter in the actual game.

Not sure if the players want to be bothered with such petitions in game, but I do think it would be a good thing. They shouldn’t be frequent, easy to digest and not too controversial.

For example, each living story chapter could have had a 1-5 scale for fun, rewards, story and impact much like the betas had for different events. These gave a lot of good feedback.

As far as real design choices are concerned, that’s not really up for democratic choice. A.net is a corporation, and their choices will reflect what’s best for business. In the end, what’s best for players is also best for a.net so I wouldn’t worry too much.

I miss the trinity like I miss that ex girlfriend I think of every so often. Sure I’d like to be with her again for all nostalgia reasons but few seconds later I realize why we broke up and how we wouldn’t last for more than a day together.

Same for the trinity. People might feel it’s a good system, but by thinking it through one realizes immediately why it’s that bad and why we got rid of it.

Also, if they want testing, they should have TEST SERVERS. As has been suggested since forever.

There is a test server. Your ignorance doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

They meant a public server, so that, you know, things can be tested in a test environment that is confidently similar to live, instead of a server that only has 100 or so dev/QA people on it which requires them to then beta test on live. Among about a hundred other reasons why PTR is a good idea.

Ye right. The only thing people ever do on a PTR is raid orgrimmar and dual with max gear. If exploits are found, they’re kept secret to exploit on launch day for world firsts. In the end, it’s just wasted resources and achieves almost nothing. Furthermore, all interesting content gets spoiled and months of whining is wasted on essentially nothing since balances get pushed anyways. In the years I’ve played WoW, I’ve never seen the PTR achieve anything.

Your ignorance of context doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

True. That’s why I gave my interpretation of the context. PTR doesn’t work like you seem to imagine. In a perfect world … sure. But we’re talking entitled elitist exploiting gamers here. The better alternative is to have a closed group of testers who can be banned and sued for breaking NDAs and not doing their job.

I would lol so hard if you were one of the subset that had access, but you never knew it because you were too busy stamping your feet and throwing a tantrum like a toddler, instead of logging in.

You’re missing the point entirely. I’m not here to beta test. I’m here to play with others. It’s ridiculous that they hype up the feature, then limit it to others. It’s a bad way of doing business. Denying access to features is just bad. Look how terrible it was with Overflow servers during Clockwork Chaos, and now with the upcoming Tequatl Rising update.

The only one acting childish is you, by using immature analogies instead of looking at this logically. So please, think before you post next time.

Google does it all the time. Grow up. You’ve been waiting for a year. Can’t you wait another week to make sure it’s working 100%.

What positives would raids bring to this game? I’m honestly drawing a blank. There’s, afaik, no good reason to implement instanced wow-style gearcheck tiered raids. There’s a game for that already, and they’ve mastered it.

Thats the thing, in WoW its the PLAYERS that gear check, the gear iLvL is the games way and the dungeon gear is the right iLvL for the LFR system, the LFR gear drops are good enough for full raiding, its the PLAYERS that push

Whether it’s system imposed or player pushed is not relevant. At the end of the line, a gear check is done, which is an ugly thing for a game which most healthy people can only play for 2 hours a day, if at all.

The only place in GW2 where gear is an issue, is high level fractals, which doesn’t content gate anyone who chooses not to do it. On the other hand, I never saw the Lich King. Couldn’t. I have too much of a life to grind out the gear.

And yet that’s what raiding seems to imply time and time again … increased gear stats. I simply can’t agree to something like that in this game. People bought GW2 for flat stats and horizontal progression. Please let this kind of bad raiding stay in the games I don’t play anymore, exactly because of the raiding.

Not a GIFT. This is COMPENSATION.
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Essence_of_Luck_
Given to accounts created before the Super Adventure Box: Back to School release to compensate for loss of Magic Find gear.

How does what “everyone” else recieve actually have anything to do with it?

So your concept is, if someone owes me 5 cookies, and comes to the party with a huge truck of cookies and gives 5 cookies to everyone including me, he has not repaid his debt towards me at all?

If that’s what you are implying, then that is extremely selfish. I consider that he repaid me the cookies and out of pure kindness, he shared 5 cookies to everyone else in the party.

Now, if he owed me 5 cookies but gave cookies to everyone except for me, then I would have reason to be angry.

Sorry, this has maybe nothing to do with the post but i have to reply: in your situation i would feel compensated, but i think it would be an awkward situation: i couldn’t help but think: “why did i have to earn those cookies while everyone else gets them for free? I mean, why me and only me?” We would still be friends and all, your debt would be settled, and i’d be seriously super happy for all the others who got the free cookies, but then i wouldn’t be able to shrug off the sensation that you’re provoking me somehow. I don’t know, i’d feel last among equals.
And just a thought more on topic: i don’t think the OP is asking for more cookies, just the option to choose a different flavour (stat combination).

This tends to happen all the time. To stay in the cookies theme, I’d first thank the friend for giving me cookies earlier and in the process of giving him the cookies I’d then say I baked enough cookies for the whole department. They have to thank the one friend for that.

Not only is that a reasonable scenario, it tends to happen a lot in my life. Maybe my friends and colleagues are just a bit more generous than the OP’s.

They release stuff “without testing it”: people complain.
They test it and people complain.

I would rather have these test than getting into a situation where my character is locked into something due to a bug.

I agree that it might have been better to leave the LFG out of the preview page though.

My thoughts exactly. Threads like these make me happy I’m not in the games industry.

No. They have literally been bragging about how they’re finally adding in the LFG tool since they announced it. To slyly announce LAST MINUTE that “oh, by the way, we’re not actually releasing it” is ridiculous.

They’re releasing it, but phased. That way they can make sure the players don’t DDOS it on day 1. Sounds like a pretty good idea, considering how popular this tool is going to be.

Your answer is going to be “make more servers then”. That’s a ridiculous position, to reserve tons of serverspace for a tool that’ll have its peak users moments after launch. It’s a total waste of money, whereas a phased launch is far more lenient towards system resources. It’s win-win for everyone, including you.

Would you rather have a bad tool now, or a good, functional tool in a week or so? Quality takes time.

Also, if they want testing, they should have TEST SERVERS. As has been suggested since forever.

There is a test server. Your ignorance doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

My answer is not to make more servers. My answer is to not market it like they’re releasing it to everybody like they have been. Thanks for assuming I would just say “more servers,” though. It’s appreciated.

And as for the alpha client testers, they clearly don’t test enough. There are so many hotfixes and incidents that happen when it goes live that it feels like a joke. When I said they should implement test servers, I mean test servers that players can use. Not just some handful of people that doesn’t represent the kind of loads that these sorts of systems will get on live. PTRs would help this game a lot.

Just do a thought experiment. PTR, perfect alpha team and you as the lead designer. LFG gets launched to everyone at the same time, and Tuesday at 18:00 2 million players try to access it at once. Just imagine what would happen …

There are only two options … a phased launch or huge investments in server space that’d be redundant in less than an hour.

It’s pretty clear that nothing in your post presents any alternative to this phased launch. But assuming you’re perfect and you don’t ever have to cover for contingencies, please enlighten me. What would your alternative be to the imminent DDOS?

Hey everyone,
With Tuesday’s release we are gearing up to launch the new Looking For Group tool for Guild Wars 2. As the system comes online, our primary focus is with the quality and the stability. To ensure a solid rollout, we’ll turn on the LFG tool in beta form to a subset of players. As the week goes on, we’ll periodically unlock the system to additional groups of players.
In Tuesday’s release notes, you’ll see the complete list of what the feature will do once we’ve fully unlocked the system. However, during the beta rollout not everyone will be able to use the LFG tool and the World vs. World subcategories will be disabled.
The Looking for Group feature has been highly requested and we’re excited to be this close to its final release, but quality is paramount. Therefore, we ask for your patience and understanding while we work through this phased beta rollout and with any problems we encounter.
Thanks,
Mike Zadorojny
& the Looking For Group team

Just curious as to how this subset was determined, and whether or not it will be rotating as the beta progresses.

It’s upvotes divided by infraction points.

Ive noticed that these went up too. But its still amazing that Orichalcum, Ecto’s and alot of T6’s didnt hyper inflate with that.

For good reason. One hardly needs Ori, Ecto and T6 for an ascended item. Whereas you need over a thousand iron or platinum, you can make do with less than 20 Ecto and Ori.

Which merely shows what a brilliant economist John Smith really is. The prices for worthless items got fixed and the ones that were more or less priced correctly are not involved in Ascended gear.

To mitigate even further, people have been salvaging greens and ascended like crazy since yesterday. Guess what those generate … Ori, Ecto, T6. More than enough to offset increased demand.

Yeah, I think we all realize that since we play the game.

However, there is a point between having a gem store item to make money and having a gem store item to gouge your customers with.

To OP: Keep in mind that a lot of people have been transferring gold to gems lately because of all the farming, so it may seem high dollar wise, but many people are getting it with gems purchased with gold.

Which was paid for with euros by someone else. In the end, every gem spent on cosmetics, is a gem paid for in hard cash.

I don’t think the transmutation splitter is meant for anyone but those who want to move legendaries. That’s a luxury service on top of the most prestigious item in the game and as such, a premium price is justified.

If it matters, I’ve salvaged all my greens with the basic one and got tons of luck. No more nagging do you want to salvage this worthless green messages anymore. I would recommend blsk for exotics regardless of whether you want dark matter.

People … it’s time to say farewell to Guild Wars 2. Tag me if you know another good f2p mmorpg to play instead (i’m 100% serious, can’t keep up with this grinding crap forever).

And you’re going to find a free to play MMO with less grinding?

That’s pretty funny. Good luck with that.

GW1?

Not an MMO. Try harder.

GW2 has the least grind of all commercial AAA MMOs I’ve played. As for GW1, let’s not forget the amount of money or time it took to fill the HoM, let alone max Luxon. But it was all well spent.

SAB shows what’s wrong with the Living Story in a very direct way.

Games like this should not be forced upon someone in a month’s time. They’re games that should be played on your own time, whenever you feel like it. Oldskool Super Mario Bros is a game that would be there every day of the year. Same goes for Legend of Zelda. As a kid it took years for me to complete those. I don’t think it’s fair I’m given only a month for a game that’s now Nintendo Hard.

So I’m not playing SAB. I’m not making an ascended weapon either because I’m close to building my legendary. So that’s that. We finally have a break in the living story with absolutely no content to do. Somehow, I feel good about that.

Time Gating Is -> NOT FUN

Time gating means you can’t get gear faster than me. For me, that’s fun because I won’t lag behind with my mere 1.5 hours played on the usual days.

Doesnt work for me because you’re going to get gear faster than me. I play 10+ hrs total on the weekend including friday which is about as much time as you spend in a week but i will get my gear much much slower. Like insanely slower

That’s not really true for two reasons.
1/ Several components can be traded which means you could get plenty during the weekends. I don’t know why you only play in the weekend, but you could probably log in to craft your daily stuff for a few minutes. I usually do so while my girlfriend watches her soap opera. Twenty minutes is plenty for that daily stuff, some days that’s all I get.

2/ The chance of getting an ascended weapon from dragons and WvW is not yet known, but if it’s the same as ascended rings from Maw, it’s a realistic chance. Worst case scenario, you end up with the necessary materials.

Optional third … big maybe … maybe ascended weapons are unbound. We’ll see that today. nope.

JCbroe, are you living on the same planet than us ?

If community QQ, It because sPvP actually is useless, and not funny. All of updates since right now in sPvP does not provide more fun.
A part of best players in sPvP leaved this game, because they think that conquest mode is not fun. And since one years, sPvP players ask more than new map.

Well, I enjoy that devs go back in this part of forum. But I appreciate that PvE boy stay on the other part of forum.
Because here ! Nobody is happy (And we don’t deserv it) !

There’s quite some depth to the conquest mechanic, but it takes some time to learn. I think that’s the biggest downfall, people don’t understand how important eg bunkering is (since one person can keep a point from being neutralized). People don’t understand the mechanic behind the guild lord, how it tends to create come backs. At pax this was explained to great length and once you know such things, you start to like the mode a lot more.

We get tired. Emotional. Fatigued. Excited. You name it. Ask any dev from any game, and they’ll tell you – they’ve been through it all in order to ship a game. And just like you (who are also not robots), we take vacations. We hit caps where we’re just so tired that we need to back off, recharge, take a vacation, and then come back to the project.

New patch tomorrow, with guaranteed bs updates to PVP.

But no worries, Rome II is updating atm. Moving on to better games with Devs who actually care. And it hurts me to say it because I love ANet and GW to no end. But atm GW2 is just.. disappointing.

At PAX, the Dev response.. “I don’t really know much about PVP..”

Guild Wars 2 and the Gear Escalator

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: marnick.4305

marnick.4305

It’s an argument of semantics at this point. The fact is a gear tier that is higher than the previously max gear tier is being released and we have no confirmation that they will not release another tier. Whatever you want to call this situation, it doesn’t change the situation itself. It is acting and provides the same concerns and issues that a gear treadmill does.

@Vayne – I’ve been meaning to ask you this since our discussion in the other tread. Do you personally want additional tiers added? Do you think the game needs it?

I’d have been more than happy if they never had anything but cosmetic gear. That’s personally. That’s completely different than if I think the game needs it.

My son got his legendary bow. Then he stopped playing the game. He’s playing a different MMO now.

My answer to that is … good riddance. I don’t mean any offence but such people make the game worse for people like me who play for fun. People like your son simply can’t be pleased on the long term, without killing fun for people like me. That makes the “good riddance” a practical thing. People who don’t like RTS games shouldn’t be playing StarCraft either.

There are goal oriented people who need goals. Those goals don’t have to be gear, but gear is certainly an easy one to provide them with.

In fact, it’s so easy that it’s become the lazy cop out in the industry. I personally believe the route with achievement break points and account stats is the superior one.

What if such people were the majority of the people? What if there weren’t enough players left for Anet to expand the game.

I don’t believe they could have been the majority. Very simple real life statistics prove that beyond reasonable doubt. It’s not even a large minority. Unfortunately posting these statistics nets me an infraction so I’m not doing that.

I’ve played a whole lot of MMOs that don’t resonate with me at all. And I don’t know a whole lot of businesses that say, you know let everyone walk out, the business we have is enough. That’s not the way big business works…and MMOs have become big business.

Unless you have two groups that don’t mingle well, in that case you let the small group walk out. Might save your business.

It’s very easy when the money being invested into the game isn’t ours. We know what we want in a game. But unlike Guild Wars 1 which had a staff of 50, Guild Wars 2 has a staff of 300, bigger headquarters and far more server expense.

I don’t know the true numbers, but I strongly suspect this game needs a whole lot of players to keep the wheels turning.

And I’m of the same opinion. But the problem is, cater too much to hardcore (by adding tier 500) and you scare away the vast majority of casuals. By catering to the casuals, who are easily 80+% of the playerbase and 90+% of revenue, you scare away a small portion of the hardcore and even less money. What would you prefer as a business?

Celestial = Magic Find. Let us Re-Roll

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: marnick.4305

marnick.4305

That’s very nice and technical, but imo irrelevant. Choosing jack of all trades inherently makes you master of none.
What do you expect then? That they make Celestial better than all other choices, boosting it’s attack on par with Berserker and give all the other stats as a bonus?

The stat totals are higher, the effectiveness rarely. That’s just the way this combination is supposed to work.

I think you missed my point, celestials isnt a jack of all trades. If you stack celestials the combination of stats you get can be bettered by combining other geartypes. The fact is that celestials isnt the best jack.

Combining other gear types makes you a better jack

I want to see proof of that, because as far as I know, celestial items have more stat totals than other gear. I don’t know how you’re going to get a higher stat total on all stats by not using full celestial?

But feel free to enlighten me.

Since the game has launched, in a single year, we’ve had exactly the addition of one tier of gear, which isn’t even finished rolling out yet. This is all a single tier.

In a traditional MMO, you’d have had three tiers by now. We’re only just getting weapons in a few days. All we’ve had is trinkets so far.

A single tier of gear does not a treadmill make.

You can’t go and say oh we have a necklace rings and a back piece and then count a weapon from the same tier as a new tier.

I don’t really think Anet wants to go down the gear grind route, and there is circumstantial evidence to back this up. They’re continuing ascended gear because they started ascended gear, but they’re also looking at horizontal progression through skills.

I’m not thinking Anet wants to keep coming out with new tiers of gear after ascended.

But at the same time we’ve had no assurance the gear threadmill isn’t going to continue after ascended.

I’m perfectly fine with the way ascended plays out right now but there hasn’t been a word on what’s happening after ascended. As a GW1 player, that concerns me greatly.

Will we ever see level 81?
Will we get a stat increase after ascended?

Those are questions that really matter. Without a very clear yes/no answer, the unrest will remain and no amount of double think is changing that. I simply can’t be as relaxed as you in the face of January 2014.

GW2 1-year old vs GW1 1-year old

in Living World

marnick.4305

Here’s a comparison for you;

The size of GW1 Tyria is miniscule compare to GW2 Tyria.

Are we talking with the GW:EN attached to the same map, are are we talking just Prophecies? And are we going to consider all the empty spots with no actual use except maybe kinda sorta for some quests maybe . . . important?

Prophecies was huge, with a lot of empty space and long walks to get places you didn’t really have to go anyway. I mean, things came later which gave you a reason to go there, but there really was no reason for eastern Ascalon, half of the Southern Shiverpeaks, and the Falls.

It was better later on but still, whew, lots of empty space in places. Don’t find many places truly “empty” in GW2, usually something in there.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chekhov's_gun

Chekhov’s gun is smoking in that statement. Nothing is more frustrating than exploring a place for hours because “something has to be there” and not finding it because it isn’t.

GW2 1-year old vs GW1 1-year old

in Living World

Posted by: marnick.4305

marnick.4305

The OP dishonestly adds factions to the comparison, which was actually the start of year 2. If we compare content in the first 356 days we get the following for GW1:
Sorrow’s Furnace.
Rotscale. was there since launch
The green weapons update. basically the SF update
An entire new continent with around 30 new explorable areas.
A new storyline with 13 story missions.
Over 200 20 new quests. Some in SF, titan quests and some more scattered around the game.
Two new professions, the Assassin and Ritualist.
At least 30 new skills per profession.
Several new PvP arenas.
Four new Guild Halls.
The introduction of alliance mechanics including a moving boundary of war and allegiance rank/faction.
Two competitive missions, Fort Aspenwood and Jade Quarry.

Three challenge Two endgame areas missions.
Two elite missions, The Deep and Urgoz’s Warren.
Alliance battles.
New guild cape designs.

Plus more, including all associated quality of life and refinement changes. (not a whole lot actually)

Me thinks the first year of GW2 is at least on par with that, even though a lot of it was temporary, I had a lot of fun with it. Wish it was permanent though but that’s not part of the discussion at hand.
