Staff Support/DPS Mesmer Build?

in Mesmer

Posted by: maxinion.8396

maxinion.8396

There is no such build. Staff is bad in the current PvE meta— the damage is just too subpar. You’ll be hurting your own potential, and your team, if you’re using it.

For PvE, and that’s fractals included, you want maximum DPS and reflects. So that means something like 10/30/0/20/10 or 0/30/0/25/15 with sword+focus and sword+sword. The wardens are critical for reflect uptime. You should be using zerker gear + ruby orbs or scholar runes for maximum damage.

Staff’s iWarlock is actually fairly good DPS, but the autoattack on staff is such trash that you will be hurting your group with it. If you must range, use greatsword or scepter/pistol, or scepter/focus.

If you absolutely insist, you can do something like swap out sword/sword for staff, or replace the focus in some fights where you know you don’t need reflects.

Good luck, but really, you will drop in DPS quite significantly.

There’s no benefit to a little extra vitality/ toughness/ condition damage/ healing power in dungeons.

If you’re having trouble surviving, use knights or soldiers armor instead of zerker— you won’t waste points on useless things like condition damage and healing power. Those sets will give you enough that you can actually survive a bit better but still deal some damage.

[PvE] Mantra build!

in Mesmer

Posted by: maxinion.8396

maxinion.8396

It’s not quite clear what your build is trying to do.

Magi gear is bad. Restorative mantras has a horrible coefficient for scaling with healing power, so that’s all a waste. You’re running a shatter for offense, but don’t have DE… You’re running mantras, but don’t have Empowering Mantras, which is the only good mantra related trait.

PvE is all about maximum damage. That means zerker gear all the time, with ruby orbs or scholar runes. It means 0/30/0/25/15 (or the handful of related builds) taking the extra damage traits wherever possible. And it means learning when to reflect, to maximize the utility of your feedback and wardens.

A build like what you linked will be pretty useless at everything, sorry.

Preferred build for dungeons?

in Mesmer

Posted by: maxinion.8396

maxinion.8396

I must be an oddball since i still run full non-mantra phantasm builds, 10/20/0/25/15.

My main reflect damage comes from wardens and having both +15% ph dmd modifiers is great. Amazing in CM/SE when you reflect a bomber and your whole screen is filled with a million juicy crits.

Also a fine build, but your feedback does 12% less damage— the difference in fights like Lupi will be large. You and your phants gain 4% damage, and a bit more flexibility on utilities.

Preferred build for dungeons?

in Mesmer

Posted by: maxinion.8396

maxinion.8396

Pyroatheist ftw, as usual. Such posts, wow.

In a dungeon group, everyone needs to pull their weight in DPS, and that includes the mesmer. If you manage to get two phantasms up with a 10/30/0/20/10 or 0/30/0/25/15 build, you’re doing good damage. In addition, you’re providing reflects up the wazoo, and time warp. Portal on occasion. Boon strip on demand. Condition clear. That’s your job.

Not even guardians are allowed to slack in DPS these days, so mesmers certainly shouldn’t either.

Dungeon Selling Legal/Illegal?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: maxinion.8396

maxinion.8396

OK, so the question is not whether selling end game content to make IN GAME gold is legal or not, the question is, why is the exploit allowed that permits people to do it. I’m pretty sure that zoning through walls into a swim exploit, not taking any damage from top end legendary bosses, would qualify as an exploit. If a party was able to sell the end boss by running the dungeon above board, I’d say “Go for it, you deserve the gold.” But this way, allowing certain class mechanics to use terrain exploits to get there? Sorry, this is wrong no matter how you slice it.
Last message from Support that I got on this issue is that it is a known issue, and a fix is being worked on. If that’s true, it can’t come soon enough.

Nice necro (not enough front page posts on this topic already?)

They put in fixes every few patches. People find new exploits in a matter of hours. Cycle continues.

They are banning the exploiting sellers now it seems, so that’s progress.

How fast is too fast for Anet

I think that it’s incredibly naïve to think that average times from 1 year ago would be comparable to today. People have been playing the game a year longer— we’ve figured out the tricks, we’ve figured out the builds. 10 minutes faster, on average, over the course of one year is not unreasonable.

This is just yet another ploy to squeeze out a few more weeks/months of lots of words but no action.

We ask for dev interaction on topics that are important to us, and we’re getting dev interaction on topics that are important to us. If we can communicate clearly what we want (this is something that ANet does not seem to understand at the moment, for whatever reason), then we can hope for real changes. Might as well give it a shot and see what happens.

“If we can communicate clearly what we want!?” You have got to be joking. We’ve seen more than enough well-written, well-communicated lists of issues, concerns and suggestions. If Anet cares to look, they can easily find these. Talk, talk, talk, is all they do. But this time, they’ll really do something, right? This time it’ll be different.

I’d like to see Anet resolve one of the serious issues first as a sign of good faith.

They’ve never actually promised to listen before— that’s why the CDI things are ‘new’. Moderators have always moved our topics into the dungeon forum-hole where they would never be seen, etc. But here? Chris is going to read every post. That’s something that has not happened to us in a long time.

Listen, I’m as skeptical as anyone else, but cynicism benefits no one here. If you end up being right, you are all encouraged to point and laugh at me, Nelson style. I’ll laugh at myself too! It’ll be funny.

But if this actually works? And the game gets fixed, and develops in a way we actually want? Then we all win. It’s worth a shot. The only cost is a few days worth of positive, constructive posts, which everyone in this forum is very capable of making— I’ve seen how helpful and eloquent and insightful this community can be.

Critique These Builds

in Elementalist

Posted by: maxinion.8396

maxinion.8396

PvE damage:

Your traits in fire are wrong. You want VI, VII (that one is right at least), and most importantly, XI. XI means your lava font deals one more tick, raising your dps by ~20%.

No reason for any of your earth choices either, since they don’t help damage. People usually choose earth VI on staff builds for more damage. 30 in earth also takes way too much toughness.

Besides that, your points are probably better spent on 20 in air (again, lots of % damage increases there, and precision and crit damage are useful) and 10 in water (for the % damage increase). Blasting staff is debatably useful— if you’re playing with an organized group, lava font is already large enough to hit most clumped enemies and you don’t need the larger AoEs. It might be more useful in pugs.

Any PvE damage build that doesn’t take FGS is… not a PvE damage build either.

PvE Support: I’m not sure there’s a real application for a cleric support elementalist in PvE. But I guess this is as good as such a build could be?

Lesson learned, don’t ever use a watchwork portal on a mes unless you’re in combat and really need a portal while it’s not slotted in.

D/D PvE Dungeon Build (Need help)

Healing in dungeons is significantly less useful than doing more damage. The best “support” you can provide is 20+ stacks of might that you can put out with a scepter + Lightning Hammer build. The stickies at the top of the page will tell you how to run these sorts of builds.

If you really want a d/d or d/f healing build, the “classic auramancer” from here: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/elementalist/Neko-s-Comp-Guide-to-the-Dungeon-Ele/first is probably your best bet. But again, it is not good for dungeons, and more DPS would be a much more effective contribution to your team.

Dungeon Forum FAQ

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: maxinion.8396

maxinion.8396

Q: Everyone in my group just ran past all the trash mobs! Aren’t we supposed to kill monsters in dungeons? Isn’t it cheating to just run through?

A: What you just saw is called “skipping.” Robert Hrouda, a former designer at ANet, gives a great summary of the topic here . He explains the reasons why people skip very well, and the post is worth reading.

Paraphrasing Robert, everything is related to time spent vs. reward earned. Trash mobs take quite some time to kill, and give rather poor rewards (lots of sticky gobs are not particularly exciting). Since you can skip, and most of the time this is faster, it doesn’t make sense for players to fight most of the trash mobs. There is just no incentive to do so. ANet recognizes this, and allows players to skip, as Robert’s post shows.

Keep in mind, also, that some mobs spawn infinitely (this is particularly common in Arah). You can never stop and kill everything— you have to run! Skipping has been built into the core dungeon mechanics by ANet with these infinite spawns— ANet intended for skipping to be part of the game, so it is certainly not cheating. People often just use this same tactic in other places as well.

Now, we can imagine a world without skipping— what would it look like? ANet could simply turn off leashing of mobs, and they would always follow. What would happen to dungeon runs? Well, first: people could drag them all across the dungeon into the best location to fight them. There would always be some corner which you could bring the mobs to, drop your AoE’s, and destroy everything at once. That is not much of an improvement— the mobs are still trivialized. Alternatively, people would just use stealth. Every team would require one or more thieves (imagine the LFG posts: LF thief ONLY) so that they could still skip past mobs, since at the end of the day, skipping with stealth would still be faster. This is hardly an improvement either: ideally all content in the game can be completed with any class composition, and powering up stealth play like this would make the game less egalitarian.

ANet could always turn up the incentives for killing mobs: having them drop better loot is a great way to do this. For example, the destroyer trash in Crucible of Eternity is often fought because they drop T5 and T6 claws— the drop rate is not super high, but high enough that people generally think it is worth the time. Another example is the practice of killing trash mobs to get stacks of bloodlust or perception before fighting a boss— in this case, killing trash helps your effectiveness in fighting the bosses, and people are often very happy to do it.

At the end of the day, as Robert summarized over a year ago now, it is a matter of incentives. There is usually no benefit to fighting trash, so people understandably decide not to do it.

Q: Doesn’t it take zero effort to skip? Isn’t it unfair for this reason?

A: Just because skipping takes less time, does not mean it is trivial. Mobs can use knockdown, cripple, chill, and immobilize effects to prevent you from running. A successful runner knows the tells from mobs and knows when to dodge, when to use stability, when to cleanse conditions, when to blink, when to use a bit of stealth, etc. Groups will coordinate swiftness and aegis and other shared resources. People often switch equipment (to something with centaur runes, for example, for extra swiftness) or weapons (movement with a warrior’s sword/warhorn is easier than the preferred DPS weapons of axe/mace). Running is another form of challenge in this game, and it can be quite fun to do it right.

Q: I still don’t like skipping! What should I do?

A: You are not alone! While most people seem fine with skipping, people post in the dungeon forum complaining about skipping more than once per week on average. The simplest thing to do is very clear in your LFG posts: say things like “READ PLEASE: NO SKIPPING. Path 1” and feel free to kick people who do not follow your description. But the best thing, as Robert mentioned in the point above, is to find others who agree with you, and who you can reliably run your dungeon with exactly how you want to. Keep a list of people who join your groups for no skipping runs, look for guilds which do not skip, look for other posters on the dungeon forum. Trying to convince people who like skipping won’t be very effective: the most productive thing you can do is to reduce conflict and play with people you know you can count on.

This whole stacking thing is starting to make me wonder a few things : do we all have the same definition about it ?

When you stack at a specific point so the enemies behave differently, that’s an exploit.

Did you know that when you range a boss, he will sometimes not melee you? Is ranging exploiting too?

Excuse for not making it clearer for people like you (and a few others) : When you stack at certain places, the boss stops using certain attacks. Just like when you stack on the pillar the Spider Queen won’t spit poison. Or when you end up pushing Alpha through the wall it stops attacking. You can do the same thing with Dwayna, and most bosses : when you end up pushing them through a wall/texture, they bug out at stop using some/most/all attacks.

Ok, so let’s be clear back.

You can get the spider queen to stop using her poison AoE by standing in her. Try it— have everyone stand in her. Done! She only ever tries to use it at range. The corner for the queen just gets her into a position where she’s too close to use her range attack.

This is why people bring up Lupi: if you range Lupi, he won’t use the one-shot attacks like kick and swipe on you. If forcing the Queen to stay in melee is exploiting, so is ranging Lupi: they’re both just avoiding a particular type of attack.

we all do weeding out of our own the difference is we aren’t complaining about it or making excuses. there are waaay to many players that don’t want to stack, they post here all the time. form a guild and make it work.

You don’t have to complain because you’re with the meta, the masses, the way it is currently. The people who want change are “complaining” because they want change. they want to play how they want to play i.e not stacking, skipping, zerking, and so on, but can’t because all people care about is the “meta” and will follow it without question. If things were the other way around I’m sure there would be plenty of complaining for the other end.

The average player stacks, but the average player does not run zerker meta builds. I consider myself lucky if I get one or two in a PUG who do. So yes, it is still challenging for us to find exactly the teams we want— that’s why PUGing is tough.

When you want a specific thing from your party-mates (meta play, non-stacking, PINK), it takes a bit of work. That’s why your guild and the other PASS thread are the best solutions: you’ll be able to easily find people to run with, according to your standards, without all this extra work.
