Opinions on Raids

The thing I miss/like about raiding is big fights with interesting/challenging dynamics.

We have some big fights in GW2, but they’re impossible to fail. Which makes them not so interesting nor challenging.

Making things instanced is a crutch that devs can use to make an encounter unzergable. Seems like that’d be important if they ever wanted a big fight that is also challenging.

If they made one, I’d definitely do it, regardless of the rewards. I’d even pay for it, if access were a gem-shop/DLC thing.

Cuz with the current dye system, eventually everyone will be walking around in celestial and abyss.

Greetings and thank you for your feedback. I understand the concern and the desire to get your profits and items in a timely manner. Consequently, we now offer the option to purchase a portable BLTC summoner. Simply activate this at any location in Tyria or the Mists, and you can access our services anytime you like! This exemplifies our commitment to quality service, at a price.

Why would I sell if the TP prices are at 1 CP above vendor price?

mulch.2586

The reason why to do it is you’re stuck out in WvW with overfull bags. Or in your story quest, a dungeon, or just out in the world and don’t have access to a vendor.

It happens all the time to me, particularly for things like leather and ore, and for greens and some blues that I don’t want to salvage cuz I already have too much leather and ore.

The diff in price is some smallish bit of copper, less than what you “lose” by destroying an item. It’s all profit, just a smaller profit.

I don’t think you could do race-change, regardless of the story quests, because of the race-specific gear. I suppose they could just auto-convert your cultural gear to the new race’s cultural, but that’s sure to cause problems. But then again, hey SonyEQ sells $25 race-change potions, why can’t ANet be as good as Sony?

Blizzard is an interesting case study.

They rather famously said they would not ban gold buyers. So players buy gold. Lots of it. It’s part of the game’s culture at this point.

ANet to this date has never said they’ll ban a gold buyer. Yes, they have a record of everyone who got gold from a gold seller in the mail database. But you’ve not seen anyone banned for it.

If they’re real on limiting RMT, they need to punish the demand side. Or go the route Blizzard did, and accept RMT as a fixture in our game.

Cuz surely if sellers can make good money selling gold cheaper than the gem-store, if buyers can continue buying risk-free, they will.

Quality of drops from quests and rewards

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: mulch.2586

mulch.2586

The quest rewards are exactly the level of the quest. If you do the quests right when you’re of the level, it’ll work out fine. Actually the hat from CM-story is 45, so you may actually have to wait to equip what you get.

As far as the other stuff — I’ve recently become a believer in magic find. I equipped 4 Noble runes on an alt, and he started getting yellow and green drops. Still not guaranteed to be useful, but it raised overall what I had to choose from.

Finally, if you’re one who wants up-to-date gear as you level, you can get gear from the TP that costs just a few coppers more than you’ll get to sell it back. Consider it very cheap rent. In many cases, if you’re able to salvage the sigil/rune, you come out ahead on cost.

Midsummer, I think a 10-man dungeon would be cool. If I had a vote, I’d rather it be a new dungeon rather than hard-core mode of the existing ones, but either way it’d be cool.

The 2nd dungeon set, of course, must be the same level exotic as the first. They could perhaps get a different skin. Or possibly even rearrange the stats to one of the condition/crit/power/precision/toughness/vitality combos that’s desirable but not readily available.

I don’t see why it should get twice the tokens of a 5-man run.

Seems like with 10-man, they could make the encounters require particular types of skills, such as a pair of mobs where one has super high toughness and the other has constant condition removal, or things like that to require new levels of strategy. A mob that requires you do combos to beat it… Could be interesting.

Well, understand that they’ve committed that Exotic gear is the highest you’ll go. You can spvp and get new skins but the same stats. You can dungeon grind and get stuff, but it’s the same power level. That’s how it’s gonna work.

Now adding 10-man group dungeons, sure I’d love that. Seems like expansion stuff. New looks, new achievements, fantastic. But increased rewards, not gonna happen.

I guess it depends on your guild. Mine has a very active voice-chat group. Right now (10 AM on a Tues) there’s only 60 people on, but during primetime it gets busy. The draw is to have a community and social group.

The raid targets in GW2 don’t really need voice or any sort of organization. Truly I’ve yet to see a world boss target fail to go down on schedule, from the Shadow Behemoth to the big dragons.

But voice is very handy for WvW and dungeons, and also guild events. We do zone-zergs where as a group we go thru a pve zone to hit the events, SPs and stuff.

I did one dungeon without voice-chat, and I won’t willingly go voice-less ever again.

Typically farmers don’t pay for the game, and use scammed credit cards or spoofed timecard-codes for subscriptions. So it doesn’t particularly deter the crooks, just your legit customers.

At this point, there’s no possible way ANet could require a subscription, no matter what. it was such a central selling point to GW1 and marketing GW2.

Excellent work. Thank you for the effort.

Now, if only we could have this survey (or a smaller version) asked once every 6 months before login to the game. Or even just made more known to all players (small percentage use the boards). Other games have done this and it provides a great deal of actionable info for devs and project leads.

Yeah, polling players instead of guru and reddit readers would get closer to the population of interest. I’d think devs & project leads could specify more informative queries, too.

Aside: some little things immediately discredit the OP’s efforts. Check grammar. Learn some data-handling techniques, or enlist some help from someone who’s trained in the topic.

I think relevant also is NCSoft’s approach to botting.

I played Lineage-2, one of their flagship-products. At one point I came to learn that I was the only person in my clan who was still using the official client to play the game.

Botting was very much part of that game (it took about 2700 game-play hours to get to max level on your main class, and about that much again for your sub-class). Similarly when I played CoH at its launch, if it takes 1000 mob kills to go from level 11 to 12, there’s a true push for automation.

As a company they have a tacit acceptance of botting and RMT. NCSoft isn’t the same as ANet, but they are the parent.

As George Bush said, the tree don’t fall far from its nuts.

PSA: Stop hounding Anet about bots

First and foremost is the integrity of the game’s system. There have been games that didn’t have bot problems. Right now there’s nothing in place that requires you to log in with the actual client. On the coding side, it’s too easy.

There’s also the motivation for botting — RMT. ANet has direct control over gems-to-gold. The exchange rate is high enough that there’s lots and lots of room for gold sellers to under-cut ANet’s prices. They’ve also set some desirable things in-game that cost a lot of gold, such as Order and Cultural gear.

Further, I’ve yet to see anyone anywhere who’s been banned or disciplined for buying gold.

These are the weak points. Not that DE’s are farmable or anything like that.

Very much the worst way to stop bots is by observing them in-game and trying to report. The most relevant, easiest access data are server-side. I’m someone with a career that involved developing methods of telling one type of human from another type, based on their data. Telling a human from a machine is always easy, when you look at the quantifiable data, i.e. the data stream from client to server in this case. I would assign such a task to at most a MS-level student.

It’s not that we’re never satisfied.

It’s that instead of tightening security so that it’s not so simple to run bots, they’re putting restrictions of players who are following the rules, trying to play the game according to the rules.

And how would you do it then?
What would you do different that would be better?

Here’s just a thought — how about if an account is loggin on to the game, they have to be running the actual client, and not a bot?

How about some server-side security so hackers can’t use the reportedly 20-million attempted passwords for each account trying to get in?

Spoiler alert: About the last quest..

in Personal Story

mulch.2586

It’s a MMORPG. In other games, you were “forced” to group/raid to complete your epic quest lines. So too here, but only the last step.

ok I am not picking on mulch, it is just using this quote to make the point. as shown above this is a MMORPG and in other games you had to group is a sentiment that many have.

I want to change this a bit.

This game is a game with micro transactions. In other games with such transactions you have to pay for content. So image if the last story you had to pay $5.00 to play it. You would not be so accepting of “Hey this is a Micro Transaction game” line. This is how I feel about being force to group at the end. It was like they charged money just so you could get a ticket to get into the mission.

I think we’ll agree to disagree. If it were a pay-for-DLC game, yes, I’d expect to pay for DLC. But it’s not, we don’t, and this was advertised as part of the game. I never saw that it was advertised as a purely solo game or that story-mode was a solo feature.

I did 3 epic quests (and parts of a couple others) in EQ1. They required groups and raids, and were effective in getting people together to accomplish goals of individuals. I loved it, and still love that aspect in MMOGs. Same thing with the big quests in other games as well — did the epic lines in Rift most recently.

There are single-player games. The stories in them are 10-times better than GW2’s, too.

Having to attempt dungeon content is hard the first time. I could totally see that as a valid complaint. But getting tweaked cuz a MMO requires you to group to accomplish the pinnacle achievement in a basic aspect of the game — I think it’s misguided.

Scepter is your own ranged weapon. For PvE you can usually go without one, but you’ll need one for WvW and dungeons. Good to keep one in your bags for world bosses, too.

I think any new profession, it’s good to go to the heart of the mists and get a feel for how things go on the golems and in matches, too, if you’re of the inclination.

If you played a GW2 thief, presumably you learned about dodge and positioning. Timing is everything for a guardian, cuz usually you’re in close where the dangerous action happens.

For example, on my ranger, I pretty-much just try to keep everything on cooldown. With my guardian, ya gotta save your block for when you need it. Combos are important, too.

I found events to be a lot better than hearts in terms of leveling. I’m afraid you’re compelled to do the hearts for zone completion, however. So ignoring the hearts will speed you up, but then you’ll feel like you have to go back to them later.

WvW can be absolutely the fastest leveling in the game. It can also be nearly a complete waste, depending on what you do there.

For pve, there ARE more areas than you can possibly do before hitting 80.

For the O.P. around your level there’s Fields of Ruins and Blazeridge Steppes and Lornar’s Pass and Dredgehaunt cliffs, and of course move on to Bloodtide coast.

Why Legendary Weapons looks like that?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: mulch.2586

mulch.2586

EQ1 had epic weapon quests.

The way it worked, each profession had a quest. So if you were a shaman, you worked for a spear, a druid for a scimitar, a thief got a dagger. I got all 3 of those.

The art team does their best, but this same issue came up in EQ1, too.

My thief’s dagger, especially cuz of being a gnome, no one ever saw. Stand really close to me, zoom in and you’ll see, it’s glowing. sigh The necro stick looked like a duck.

What I assume is the art team came up with a bunch of options, decided on the one to launch as the Legendary, and then keep the other design ideas for use in later content.

In GW2 here’s your great comfort. If you get your legendary and don’t like the look of it, you can always transmutate it to look like something else.

Take a combat system that’s supposed to be dynamic and exciting. Put it underwater and it’s not anymore.

The system feels like it’s not done yet, not ready for release. A PvP thief has exactly one "choice’ for elite. Even floating in the middle of the water, mobs glitch out and go invulnerable.. My personal story segment yesterday the mentor npc and our target disappeared into the wall. I finished the fight beating on the mob that wouldn’t fight back…

It’s just clunky. I’m pretty sure if it actually worked well, I’d still not care for it. but at least it should work well.

WvW is a sandbox. The opponent may not have as many people as you. Or possibly twice as many. Some maybe full exotic 80s, and others are puny nubs who don’t even have an elite.

One of the big obvious buy-your-way-to-power in WvW is the siege equip. With all the gold-sellers, it’s literally spend a couple bucks and have a dozen sets of plans.

It’s designed to favor the wealthy. Karma at least is earned in-game.

WvW isn’t the venue to judge the 1v1 abilities of classes, cuz there’s no control to player power/gear there.

A thief very quickly downed my son’s thief today in WvW. But together with my guardian we killed the thief. BUT it’s important to note, my son’s thief is still in his 30s. So of course he’s fragile.

In sPvP, thief does ok, but isn’t OP. The Mesmer is strongest 1v1 but I think that’s the way it’s supposed to be.

Part of why a thief is a lil OP when they control the fight is that it’s hard for them to control the fight, especially in WvW, and rather weak range in a range-centric setting.

Really I think ANet has broken more than they’ve fixed by nerfing rewards. The problem is bot-kittens and kitten-bot-gold-spam-kittens. Fix them by shoring up the security of the system. Nerfing the drop rates, thus far, only increases the number of bots farming.
