After some time away from the game the initial hot air cleared out of my head and I decided to give HoT another go. I’ll share my thoughts here

1. Which map is your favorite to EXPLORE? – One thing became clear to me, I really do hate the hot maps
1 Verdant Brink
10 Auric Basin ( only for the map design, 0 for everything else )
0 Tangled Depths
0 Dragon’s Stand

2. Which map has your favorite MAP META mechanic – Nothing special with these metas, long, boring player train with crap rewards
0 Verdant Brink
0 Auric Basin
0 Tangled Depths
0 Dragon’s Stand

3. Which map has your favorite REWARDS (unique zone rewards) – the only reward i cared about was the bladed armor because it finally gave light armor classes something resembling actual armor
1 Verdant Brink
1 Auric Basin
1 Tangled Depths
1 Dragon’s Stand

4. Which map has the best STORY (both personal story and event story) – only thing I cared for was the fate of Eir, the rest of the hot story is a rehash with zombies replaced by plants
0 Verdant Brink
0 Auric Basin
0 Tangled Depths
0 Dragon’s Stand

5. Which map has the best VISUALS (map design, best view) – Auric Basin is beautiful, almost like it is from another game
5 Verdant Brink
10 Auric Basin
4 Tangled Depths
1 Dragon’s Stand

6. Which map has your favorite MAP CURRENCY acquisition method – GW2 has way too many currencies already, hence I automatically hate all the new ones
0 Verdant Brink
0 Auric Basin
0 Tangled Depths
0 Dragon’s Stand

7. Which map has the best ENEMY DESIGN (mechanics AND visuals) – the hot enemy NPCs are all different shades of annoying, I didnt feel threatened by any of them, I do hate how they all have super annoying AoEs, knockdowns etc. They felt like a cheap attempt to kill the player. Well Anet you tried to kill me- you failed, this is not Dark Souls.
0 Verdant Brink
0 Auric Basin
0 Tangled Depths
0 Dragon’s Stand

8. Overall which zone is your FAVORITE – Old Tyria is
0 Verdant Brink
0 Auric Basin
0 Tangled Depths
0 Dragon’s Stand

Bottom line, the expansion for me boils down to the Reaper. So, I bought a trait line for 50 bucks and thats my last purchase for a long time.

Death Knight-like armor for Necro/Reapers

Nicely done man, my reaper is a human also. Currently I don’t have access to the helm, gloves and shoulder skins you’ve used. My point is that as far as heavy armor is concerned there are quite a number of very cool combinations. The Light department is seriously lacking in that regard.

For example the bone armor, a look many games adopt for Necromancers, is not really explored here with the exception of some helmets I’ve seen. Something like this:

Now obviously the Necromancer is a light armor class. But that shouldnt stop ArenaNet from creating some delicious armor skins for the more warrior-minded greatsword-wielders among us. I’m fine even if they put them in the shop exclusively.

Because, honestly, if I had something that would make my greatsword Reaper look remotely close to the pic attached I’d be playing it even in HoT without a hint of complaint. (yeah, im one of those hot haters right now)

(my ranger could fight his way thru without to much troubles where my mesmer has runs into problems)

It seems as you think you have to fight each and every enemy on your way. That’s not true you can just run through them and as a Mesmer you have multiple invisibilities which make that much easier.

If you don’t try to facetank every enemy or run into zergs of enemies the HoT open world is quite easy it just isn’t faceroll on the keyboard easy as core Tyria.

Its like he said, mobs are easy as long as you avoid them. Epic journey where you fight powerful monsters and come out victorious you ask? Sorry you cant have that in the jungle, you gotta run for your life there. HoT in a nutshell, move with the players zerg or hide in the bushes… just make sure there isnt a frog waiting for you there.

Most of the problems with the game come from fellow players. The content is casual but if you can’t raid because all the groups want pugs to be in full pink zerker with 10k+ AP and other toxic nonsense we get the problems we have now.

Every map I go to has some idiot cussing out all the players in map chat that aren’t doing the meta event exactly the way he or she tells them to do.

I was doing an HP with a group and half the members were ragging on the revenant for the class being garbage and the player himself meekly agreed.

Everything in this game is easy to deal with except the community.

And this is exactly where a developer can intervene and help manage the community. But what did Arenanet do about toxic elitism? They added content which actually encourages toxic elitism is what they did. They kittened up.

Is anyone bored?

You seem to be a real casual gamer.

You know that GW2 has been casual focused for the better part of 2 1/2 years right?

Yeah which earned a lot of negativity. Lots of people were complaining how faceroll and boring the actual content is, which was the case. It takes a bit time to learn how to navigate in the new areas, but it’s not that hard. And dying isn’t that bad, at least you have to learn what your class can do and learn the functionality and what you can do.

That “faceroll, press 1111, boring” core content is what made and kept GW2 as one of the top MMORPGs today and its also what paid for HoT. Lets see what HoT pays for

I think the 3D (vertical) aspect is the future of MMOs. And HoT has that in spades. That is a revolutionary advance over the traditional MMO 2D model.

Well now, platforming, the thing you call revolutionary I call annoying. Not to mention in City of Heroes we could fly, teleport and super jump – much more “3D” than GW2 will ever be.

pepsis.5384

Some mobs hit too hard, true, also the stupid sniper trails on the floor which hit for around 6-7k per 2 second is far too much and you even can’t see it in bigger zergs. Don’t know why they made some enemies so horribly hard hitting.

But usually you can get along pretty easily. I think especially Auric Basin is easy to navigate, parts of TD are pretty tough, especially he mushrooms. But then again, it’s okay to have a bit more challenging content. After being in HOT for several weeks coming back to Central Tyria is like a pony farm. Ridiculously easy, no challenge at all, hence boring.

They produced “hard” content in the most unimaginative way. They simply boosted the dmg of enemy NPCs and if you ask the hardcore players they’d probably tell you they are already breezing through said monsters with full zerk gear.. So, back to square 1 wouldnt you say?

PS: What matters is what Arenanet thinks. Is this new pseudo-hard content-lite more or less profitable than the original GW2 design? Like we established already time will tell

“Levelling there is something that just happens while you’re still discovering the world”

Of course when you discover than same poi or vista for the 5th (or 10th) time it’s such a natural feeling that you get while re-discovering the world. Natural leveling comes the first, and maybe the second time, a third if you stress it enough, from then on there isn’t much to discover anymore, you’ve already seen everything.

Maybe Im just not as burned out as you people. Im currently leveling up my 4th alt, he is at lvl55 with no books used. I’m just moving around following the story, grabbing hearts and hero points along the way, collecting mats etc. Feels very natural and if the vista is boring you just skip it and still get credit for it. Veterans who played it all 50 times over or people who simply have way too much spare time may disagree with me.

Nice try you two. Leveling your character up is like THE most natural thing in any RPG. Trying to paint it as black as the HoT progression grind is not gonna fly.

If we two were the only way saying it, you might be right. But you saying something is not so, doesn’t make it not so.

Go into any thread where someone calls it a grind, and count the number of individual posters who think it is, and who think it isn’t. I’m pretty sure it’ll be a closer count than you think.

Honestly, the posters who say its fine might as well be more than those who complain. It doesnt really matter to me does it? Or to you too by the way. What matters to me is what I think, what I feel. And I dont feel good in the jungle nor am I having fun. I’ve had helpful guild members show me around but it doesnt work for me and thats that.

I dont even need to define exactly why that is – why waste my time and energy evaluating the expansion bit by bit. The fact there are quite a few vocal others who feel the same speaks for itself.

PS: The devil dude said it for me and I’d add that it just feels much more natural imo:

We definitely lost some people to the game being too easy before the expansion. I can’t say how many but I know people who left due to lack of challenge in the game. Some of them have come back.

Anyone truthfully leaving because of the game being too easy, and coming back for HoT, will be gone again soon because of the severely lacking amount of content in HoT. If HoT is the only content in this game you appreciate, you still have next to nothing.

^This pretty much. Someone wants to live by the clock, then taxi around the instances just so he can participate in some boring meta event be my guest. That kitten is simply not for me.

It didnt have to force a change, it could have simply added a hard mode for those who want it. Who hates this game now because of HoT?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: pepsis.5384

pepsis.5384

Hate is indeed a strong word, one should not just throw it around. That being said my once great enthusiasm for online rpgs have long been burned to the ground by grind and imbalances in the many games I’ve been through. I got GW2 back when it released, played then stopped and then came back to it a few months before HoT – it was the game where grind and gear didnt really matter. I bought into the marketing hype of HoT even tho I know well enough I shouldnt have. I said to myself ‘hey, these folks at Arenanet deserve my money right’… wrong

HoT introduced several things into GW2 and the only one I actually like are the new class specs. Everything else – time gating, having to taxi into populated maps, grind, grind and more grind, reduced rewards from well established game modes, forcing people into content, mess of a new maps, artificially boosting enemy NPCs power instead of making the AI more challenging, eSport… all of that I really dont like. And I’m sure there is something else I’m forgetting but I haven’t been to the jungle since its release and I tend to forget things I dislike.

What am I gonna do about it? For now I’ll just play alts thru core Tyria, collecting and selling materials along the way, I’ve paid money for this product after all. I wont just quit but I will refrain from buying anything else. They have to win me back if they can.

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: pepsis.5384

pepsis.5384

Every time I’ve ever played an MMO, I’ve always hated leveling alts, because I feel like I’m wasting time that I could be spending improving my main character. But since HoT gave us the mastery system, I have fun playing them because my main still gets the benefit of the experience towards the mastery leveling.
Now even when I’m not on my guardian i can enjoy playing these other classes!

I’m the same way but for a slightly different reason. I’ve never been a fan of playing many alts in mmorpgs mostly ‘cause of lack of time to do a proper progression on more than 1 toon. But ever since HoT all I do is level alts and collect materials. My so called main is stuck somewhere in the jungle and since I seriously dislike that place I’m not playing him.

Personal Opinion of HoT

Perception is reality. If the OP sees the new mobs as stronger, then they are in his view. If he sees them as annoying then they are. If you see them as interesting, then they are, for you. Me, I see them as annoying, packed with way too much cc and too high damage. They are not challenging, they are a hindrance to my enjoyment of the zone, having to constantly recover from their numerous knockdowns.

But, the mobs are just the tip of the iceberg as far as why hot sucks imo

No it’s not, perception doesn’t matter. He clearly stated that HoT veteran mobs are tougher than champions which is objectively false. And normal mobs tougher than veterans? What veterans? Queensdale veterans? Try some veteran terragrifs in the Silverwastes.

Just do what everyone else did on the new zones, adapt to the new mobs to fight them. Some people already did and find HoT enjoyable, others don’t even want to and instead post on the forums. Well excuse me but well designed mobs are those that require you to think when you fight them, if you can’t think then yes HoT might be too challenging for you. That’s not the game’s fault, it’s yours.

You base your opinion on false logic. You imply that the mob issue in HoT is actually a ltp issue and anyone who “adapts” and “thinks” will be able to enjoy the fights.

Lemme tell you something, my first time in HoT I almost soloed the Frog Champ hero point. My toon has never died from mobs (on the other hand I have died from falling many times ). I can dispatch any creature the HoT map throws at me and I still find them super annoying and unfun. So, am I lying? Or am I not thinking enough while fighting them? Do I need to adapt to every player unfriendly thing the devs introduced it HoT? How about the waiting on timers? Or the constantly failing maps?

Personal Opinion of HoT

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: pepsis.5384

pepsis.5384

On a side note why do you, the folks who love HoT feel the need to defend it? You cant handle the fact that someone is hating the thing you like? Or you simply have taken up the mantle of ArenaNet defenders? If you dislike a thread steer clear of it, just like I steer clear of HoT even tho I havent gotten my money’s worth of it.

I feel the need to defend HoT when people like the OP post lies about it. It’s one thing to state an opinion, like many do, but providing false information is a different one.

Let’s take some:

-mobs on the new maps have inflated stats, normal mobs are stronger than veterans from old content and veterans are more powerful than champion mobs.

Completely false. Veterans in HoT aren’t nearly as tough as Champions in core tyria. Not only this is false, but it doesn’t even make sense to compare the two types of mobs.

As for the normal mobs being harder than veterans, it depends on the normal mob and the veteran, HoT mobs tend to have low hit points though, much lower than most veterans in Core Tyria, but they all have interesting abilities that you have to look out for. A lot of HoT mobs die even faster (a LOT faster) than normal mobs of core tyria, for example Smoke Scales.

-lots of mobs have absurd abilities that instant kill. Some ranged frog mob dodges your attacks and shoots back at you at the same time. After 2 attacks you’re dead.

Mobs do not have inflated stats, they just have interesting abilities, once you identify them you can bring counters to defeat them, and then HoT mobs can be even easier than core mobs (since they die faster). Instead of adapting the game to you, why don’t you adapt yourself to the game?

For example, the frog that evades your attacks only evades projectiles, you can damage it with Aoe or melee attacks just fine. And for nearly all HoT mobs: CC is your friend.

-most places on the new maps need a +3 man party to travel because they are full of veteran mobs(champion lv form old maps)

Aside from the lie that veterans are like champions, this is also false, where is this magical place full of veteran mobs that you can’t pass through? I’ve been everywhere in HoT and can’t remember any place like that, other than some parts of DS during the meta, but if you are doing the DS meta you can’t be alone.

As far as PVE being easy…well, define easy. Here’s what I think. ArenaNer knew way before us that their mum NCsoft is about to release another popular title into the West. A title, well established as an esport. ArenaNet didnt want to lose players to that title so they botched up this hot bundle of “joy”. The end result IMO is a failure. The only think I kinda regret is not filing for a refund sooner. I dont like this “new direction”.

HoT is not a fail. Can you just stop these complains/thread as if everyone got the same opinion as yours? Because it’s not even the case.
You can share your opnion but saying “HoT is such a fail” as title, when there are a lot of players that are still happy with it, is pretty annoying.

Thanks.

Exactly, thread like this baffles my mind.

Sorry but that must be quite the simple mind then. Whats there to understand? Ever heard of different strokes for different folks? GW2 has a been one thing for a lot of people since it launched, now without full disclosure they started making it into another thing AND they put a hefty price tag on it to boot. So, very naturally, many people who are here because of what it was are not happy with the new direction. And as paying customers are entitled to voice their frustration right here on the forums for as long as they care to. Need more explaining?

On a side note why do you, the folks who love HoT feel the need to defend it? You cant handle the fact that someone is hating the thing you like? Purchased GW2 back when it first came out, then proceeded to quit many times for long periods. Pre-purchased HoT too in the hope it would revitalize my interest. Been trying so many times to like the combat, because once you get used to the gorgeous visuals its really the combat that would keep you playing or not. Especially in a supposed action combat mmorpg. Thing is Im just not feeling it, the awkward swings with melee weapons, the strange, twisting body animations. The slow motion-like running, jumping.. The writing below sums it up for me.

Guild Wars 2: Spammy, floaty combat with no resource management, dumbed down buffs/debuffs to the point of tedium, zero oomph, hilariously imbalanced towards Berserker (go berserker or get out), low skill ceiling even for mmorpg standards, no viable role outside of dps, dodge roll ends up being nothing more than a without-fail get out of jail card making the game even more shallow. The only good thing I can say about this combat system is the combo field system. I let my friend try this game and I gave him my build. Despite having never played it, he was killing everyone with ease just because he had an OP build. This has NEVER happened in any other combat centric MMORPG showing how hilariously bad the combat system is.

If you think WoW is so much better then go for it. Ty

I agree WvW is kittened up, but every thing else is false.
Raids will get own sub-LFG search soon.
If you want easy Raids, go play Fractals, no easy mode, no nerf, get better, get good.

I did play your content, easy content for 3 years, now welcome to my world, where i love hard content, if you want to play my content, get good, get better.

Well, we’ll just have to wait and see wont we. If “your content” can net ArenaNet the revenue it needs to continue on this path. Because the content you and others like you call “too easy” or “boring” has kept this game blooming for 3 years now. When you change the cook at your restaurant you will surely attract new customers but you always run the risk of losing your current.

Map META events = boring zerg

I’d have been perfectly happy if there had been some zones without the railroading meta event cycles, where freestyle exploration would be the name of the game. More difficult than central Tyria and with interesting things to find and to do. Areas people wouldn’t vacate as soon as they realize not enough people are doing the “thing”, so you’d not be confronted with being shuffled from closing map to closing map all the time. Areas not tied to the real-world clock.

Me too. Thats exactly what I want, to be free to roam and play HoT as I see fit. I cant dedicate my scarce spare time to meta event timers.

+1 to op. I feel quite disgruntled with the game in its current, post HoT state and I dont like the smell of whats to come.

Sadly I dislike HoT! (Spoilers)

“Exercise in frustration” is exactly what I’d call HoT. Random mobs dropping on your head, random cc with no tells putting your toon on its bottom. Dino riders charging from one side of the map to the other who seem able to knock you even if you are next to them not in front of them. If it wasnt for one of my guildies I probably would never even unlock the full “elite”.

See, I like the op, also prepurchased HoT, the ultimate edition too. I wanted to support this company. I was so excited to see my Necromancer get a greatsword. Now, a month since release I find myself roaming old Tyria if I do log in at all and the only real value from the expansion for me is the “elite” spec.

So yeah, I paid 99 euro for the Reaper. Well played ArenaNet but it will come back to bite you next time you want my money.

Will you prepurchase next expansion?

Heck no, ill wait till its released and measure the forum outcry/opinions of guildies before I give ANet a single dollar.

While the HoT maps are stunning,, ANet made a 180 degree design change that im just not down with.

Addressing forum complain is not possible because forum literally complain about every single thing in GW2 and every changes no matter good or bad.

Yes Anet made design change and it’s good decision, old maps are boring and brainless. New maps are challenging and fun if you want casual content core tyria offers plenty.

So you’ll be spending money on the game on my behalf from now on right? You’re dismissing my complaint and any complaint in general so you’re prepared to increase your spending to compensate for the loss of mine right? If your answer to the above is ‘no’ you better focus on your enjoyment and stop refuting people’s opinions.

While I seriously dislike HoT, this looks like a bait thread.

I will not buy anything else from Anet without seeing it first. I tried over the weekend to get to know the jungle with the help of a guild member. Its not happening, the moment I stop to look around some random mob falls on my face and starts spewing all sorts of annoying cc my way. Some kitten dino rider charges from one side of the map, runs me over and continues to the other side.. its chaotic bullcrap. I have a job and a gym membership for working(out), games are for easygoing fun. This aint fun for me

Daggers is the best pve weapon

After some PVE testing Id say it comes down to personal preference. For me its quite simple, I rolled a Necromancer exactly because I heard they are getting Greatswords.

As far as dps goes, Id say its about equal till <50% target HP at which point GS takes over. I know dagger seems better on its own cause its faster but with GS I can easily get a ~20% crit chance boost and my GS AA3 crits harder than the whole Dagger AA chain. Of course if you run with high base crit chance the above is abit irrelevant to you. Me, I love the idea of a super tough Reaper with high ferocity and free crit chance.

So much Hate on HoT

Mah i dont see hate i love it but like all games that have xpansion packs always gonna be that overly entitled crowd who honestly dont seem to enjoy anything or even lazy for that matter an expansion gives us more content and more gameplay which is what any gamer should want and treasure yet people complain because well they will have to play through more content which imo is what a expansion is content. Easy fix is expansion isnt even required so if you dont like it dont buy it the freaking base game is 100% free now be sure to thank anet for giving everyone a freeby.

Ummkay, how do we know if we like it or not without trying it? And what about those who pre-purchased it based on misleading marketing? Should we all get refunds? Im sure Arenanet as a company will thrive on giving people their money back.
