Inventory size now static across characters?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I may be wrong, but this may be related to the 64-bit client now being automatically downloaded and used instead of the 32-bit client (if it ‘detects’ that it should be).

Previously, when I would switch the client bit version from using the 32 to using the 64beta, several personal settings would get lost, such as the inventory size and position. I needed to resize and position it (as well as correct several other settings) every time I switched client bit version.

Your size/position settings should be remembered and work properly and persist after you set them and restart the game.

One may wonder why I was switching back and forth between bit versions – system stability and functionality tests (memory usage/temps/graphics/different ReShade versions and settings). I had decided to stick with the 32bit in the end. I’m really not thrilled that they are now forcing the 64bit client. Of all the stuff that has nearly made me walk away, this may be the last one that actually does it unless I can find a way to force the 32bit exe to be used.

Curious – why exactly do you prefer the 32 bit client?

I swapped to the 64bit client when it first went beta, haven’t gone back. It’s been a far better experience.

Guessing this is seriously a “your mileage may vary” issue?

Language is an art though, not a science. It’s an abstraction of thought where two or more unlinked minds attempt to convey ideas between each other using an indirect medium.

I would disagree here. It is very much a science, though few treat it that way. Language, at it’s core, is the act of conveying information via symbols. One need not start a fire and point, for we’ve reached a group consensus that the rapid oxidation of a material in the exothermic chemical process of combustion can be labelled “fire”.

There is an aspect of precision attached to this, so that we can rely on the verbal or written label to correspond with a concept. Being imprecise introduces the opportunity for misinterpretation, with consequences ranging from nonexistent to disastrous.

The loss of precision, to me, isn’t the problem in and of itself. It’s a symptom of a greater issue, one of cultural laziness – an attitude of “good enough”.

To quote the good Doctor;

“There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there always has been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that “my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.” "

Expand that beyond the borders of the United States, to include most Western cultures. It touches upon everything, from our approach to laws and societal behaviour, to our language and personal behaviour.

I view even GW2’s art as edging too far into the japamation style. By preference, I’d take the artwork shown in Skyrim or the Dragon Age franchise.

Realism, as far as is possible.

Languages are linguistics? Because any linguistics professor I’ve ever taken a class from doesn’t pretend that English or any language has any hard-set unchangeable rules. They would be more prone to say no one speaks the same language then say everyone is “illiterate” in English usage.

The fact that the rules get ignored doesn’t change that there are, indeed, rules.

Proper grammatical usage of the English language hasn’t changed much since the mid 1800’s. The only difference is that we tolerate, even encourage usage that is outright wrong.

The gradual kittenisation of the English language is something that may be inevitable, but that doesn’t mean it’s something we need to actively encourage.

The past three hundred years of English literature follow what is, broadly, the same grammatical and structural rules. It’s only within the last century or so that the language has become, for lack of a better term, sloppy.

Misspellings, dangling participles, improper usage (seen in place of saw, for instance) or flat out non-existent worlds (“irregardless” and “ain’t” leap to mind) are wrong.

People who play video games are video game enthusiasts, rather than gamers.

There are a number of athletes who would be amazed to discover that “sporting” has generally meant copulation, rather than the act of displaying sportsmanship.

The goal of the rules is precision, to limit misunderstanding. That people are commonly too lazy to follow the rules, and permit themselves to be sloppy with their speech and writing habits, speaks far more to the cultural attitude towards the effort of personal presentation than it does towards the linguistic medium itself.

Thankfully we behave with more rigour when it comes to mathematics and sciences than we do with languages.

Reading through this thread, I’m reminding of a rant from a friend of mine. She is a languages professor at the University of Toronto.

Apparently, nearly half of our population arrives at University in a condition that she considers functionally illiterate. That is, they are unable to properly use grammar and punctuation to convey a complex thought.

This problem is worse in the United States, since they are the place where the common usage idea came from. Despite the common usage fallacy, using the English language improperly is still wrong, no matter how widespread the problem is.

It is not simply a matter of dialect or “evolving” rules of language. It is the perpetuation of linguistic laziness that results in discussions like this.

Also, for what it’s worth, upon checking with Paula, it is indeed “staves”, not “staffs”, unless you’re talking about groups of support personnel.

As a way to boost sales for HoT, I can think of nothing better than adding gliding to core Tyria.

I admit, I’m biased, since I want to use my glider in the main game – but it would also showcase one of the cooler aspects of the expansion.

So, to be contrary, yes, PLEASE, bring gliding to core Tyria.

Also, no mounts.

Wishlist time? Fine.

-Pets finally being optional on ranger

-Ranger 1h sword rooting issue finally being fixed. (just remove the bloody leap already)

-More weapon skills. Have 2-3 options for each weapon skill.

-More of each type of skill. (More minions, wells, shouts, signets, traps, etc)

-More in-game rewards. Not everything needs to be in the gemstore.

-More dungeons.

-Tengu as a playable race.

-Centaur as a playable race.

-Cantha and Elona.

-Gliding brought into the base game.

-A complete separation of PvP and PvE skills.

-More non-trenchcoat options for male medium armours.

-More non-gemstore armours in general.

-A comprehensive set of options for graphics. (See all, See minimal, See all friendly w/ minimal enemy, See all enemy w/ minimal friendly)

-A more gw1 lore based set of storylines. (I can’t be the only one sick of the sylvari fetish that is our ONLY story?)

-Tuning of the world bosses so that they are a bit more challenging, without turning them into Teq or triple wurm.

-Account bound permanent weapons being auto-equipped on all our chars. (Have a checkbox for this so that it’s optional for those who want it.)

-I would say more communication, but we know that’s not going to happen.

Happy......

GW1 with better graphics and features, honestly.

There is a lot to like in GW2, but the longer one plays it the harder it is to keep doing so. I was looking forward to a world I could wrap myself up in and also challenge myself in. What I got was a daily theme park with nearly endless grind.

Guild Wars 1 was like reading an excellent book series.
Guild Wars 2 feels like I’m at a chuckie cheese.

You and I played a very different Guild Wars 1 then, because it wasn’t like that at all for me. It was nice, but it wasn’t an excellent book series – there’s no Lord Vorkosigan, for one.

And endless grind pretty much describes all the achievements/titles in GW1 . . . plus Obsidian or Vabbian armors . . . not so much for progression here.

Posts like these make me wonder what I spent six years playing before GW2 opened up . . .

I wanted GW1, with better graphics and a z axis.

I wanted the same character build experience.

I wanted skill hunting.

I wanted a plethora of armours that all looked different to choose from.

I wanted to see what the world, the entire world, looked like, 200 years later.

I wanted Humans, Charr, Tengu, Krait and Centaurs as our playable races.

I wanted the original game’s lore to be respected, not rewritten at every instance to allow for the flavour of the week in the LS.

In short, I wanted a game made by the original Anet.

What we got instead was GW2 – and it’s not a terrible game, but it’s certainly not an honest sequel to the original.

I’m actually thrilled. Since the only character I wanted the elite spec unlocked on was starting at 0 HP, it would end up with me not having the elite spec unlocked until I’d FINISHED the HoT content.

That was bad design.

They initially attempted to pander to the game locusts – the ones who have nothing better to do than live in game 24/7.

This is also bad design.

Now it’s achievable for those of us who work and have families, and play games casually. That demographic will always be the biggest cash cow.

By any sane business model, making something appeal to the majority is good design.

OP bought a product that was stolen, and is surprised that Anet is stopping him from using it.

This is kinguin we’re talking about – the place people go to sell stolen games.

Based on that places track record, the absolute most likely option is that the person OP bought the key from sold that same key to five or six other people.

Next most likely is that someone bought a whole whack load of keys with a stolen credit card, and is trying to sell them there as fast as possible.

The odds of it being a legit key sold at a loss is about as likely as that nice man in the trenchcoat actually having some Rolex watches for sale for $10. While it’s possible, it’s so unlikely that there’s no reason to give weight to the option.

I love how this still comes up. What I love even more is that some people believe the broken functionality of the sword to be a “feature”.

You’re all aware that at one point, this was a bug we were told would be fixed, right?

Immediately after release, it was noticed that the “leap” animation in the AA made it impossible to dodge. We actually provided video proof that this was the case, and were informed it was a bug and would be addressed.

Like every other ranger bug, it persisted for ages, and now has become so entrenched that it’s no longer a bug, but a feature.

Stockholm syndrome.

People simply amaze me.

UI screen clutter

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

stale.9785

Hey all, I know it’s been brought up again and again, so feel free to ‘deadhorsegif’, yet it still needs attention.

The UI. It’s packed with stuff. Mostly stuff that we don’t need, at least not all the time.

Could we get it so that when we collapse one of the top right elements (personal story, heart events, daily, etc, etc, etc, and even more etc) instead of becoming a header that will randomly expand into the full display again, it just becomes an icon, akin to the ones at the top left for BLTC, WvW, PvP, mail, etc?

For functionality, have any change to the status of the various collapsed icons result in a red !, the same as mail and whatnot have now. No random returns of the menus, simply an alert that something has changed.

This would give a cleaner interface, and help address the near 30% blockage of our screens with inconsequential UI clutter.

Thanks,

Stale/Dan

A useful role in group content that isn’t done far better by other classes – still missing.

Group support, beyond using healing spring and blasting it – well, now we have Druid, so you can stop attempting to deal damage, and be a dedicated healer, in a game that doesn’t require it.

Fix the Installer before HoT!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: stale.9785

stale.9785

Still, if it’s not universal, then it’s not the launcher app. Ditto their data stream outgoing. For it to be randomly among the playerbase, it then becomes a guessing game of what makes the special little snowflakes with issues particularly special, in this instance.

Is your file structure strange? (Does the launcher have to check/write somewhere other than the default location?) Is your local copy of the .dat corrupt? (See again, about the continual checking against the local copy vs. what’s being downloaded.)

Remember, the patch isn’t just one hunk of data – it’s checking your local .dat file, writing the incoming data, decompressing said data, compiling it into game usable format, and it’s doing that for each file.

I’d still say the most logical place to check would be your ISP, followed by a packet trace.

In the event there is a problem at Anet’s end, I humbly apologise before the fact. It just seems unlikely, given the nature of the complaint. (Rather like people complaining that their account, and only theirs, has been selected to never get a precursor.)

Peace, eh?

Best bet is that your ISP is limiting you. Bandwidth throttling is something that many ISPs are guilty of, some deliberately limiting certain ports.

Were it an issue with the GW2 launcher, then it would be everybody. Since it is, obviously, not everyone suffering, then logic suggests that the issue is occurring between you and the servers. The most likely place for this to happen, if it’s persistent, is with your ISP.

Could be worth your while to call them and find out if they engage in throttling, and at what point it kicks in.

Logan is the only example I can find of believable behaviour for a person in a relationship. He rarely mentions it, though it clearly directs his actions. Everyone is aware of it, but he doesn’t spend every second telling everybody who’ll glance at him how amazing Jenna is.

The suggestion upthread of Meathead/Cat lady, and the leopard form thing. That’s downright bioware writing there. I would love to see that. Conflict, soul searching, actual meaningful character development. It would be a nice change.

Balance between male and female.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: stale.9785

stale.9785

The problem isn’t that Jory/Kas are gay. The problem is that there is nothing to them aside from their relationship. It’s intrusive, adds absolutely nothing to the plot, and is the single dimension of the characters.

Think about the people you know in real life. Now, how many of them have a blatant need to push their relationship on everyone they talk to, during every single conversation?

It’s possible to write relationships in such a way that they are present, without detracting from the story. Anet has managed this marvelously with meathead and the cat lady. While I personally don’t care at all about anything in the LS, I recognise that meathead and the cat lady have been companions for a long while, with mutual sympathy. It’s implied, without beating me over the head with it.

Kas/Jory, on the otherhand, come off as written by a 13yo who’s self consciously aware that they’re writing about lesbians. “Better hit them over the head with this, every second word. We have lesbians – aren’t we progressive!”

Traits should be just that – traits.

EDIT: From what I can find, they ARE removing stats from your traits, which is awesome. Nowhere (not FB, Reddit nor the GW2 site) can I find information on an increase in stats on gear though. Could someone point me in the right direction for the source of this particular rumour?

As a gay man, I’m always humored by how many heterosexuals are so offended for me. I’ve had a lifetime of abuse and oppression. I can stand someone saying “gay.”

And in delicious irony, I once had someone use “the f word” (rhyming with maggot) to insult me. I responded that I was, in fact, one. I was banned from the game for a short period for hate speech. It was decided that I could not defend myself by devaluing the insult because the insult itself is deemed wrong by my heterosexual cultural superiors. Goodness forbid I take the insult and morph it into something to the point it loses its power. You know, like certain other words?

In speaking only for me, I don’t need your safe space. I don’t need to be protected from a word or words because you think they offend me. Take your benevolent sexism, racism, and homophobia somewhere else to swoop in and play the hero for someone else.

I’ve no need for your heroics. I do not need your projection onto me. You’re the one offended and made uncomfortable. I am not. You are using me, my experiences of oppression, and my population of people to justify your offense and your censoring response.

This isn’t a hard thing to wrap one’s head around.

Asking for special treatment, because you personally trade heavily in a way that has never been supported by the devs? In a way that is actually harmful to everyone else who plays? That goes so far beyond self centred that I’m not even mad – it’s impressive.
