From the same interview I did like this question/answer:
“Johanson went on to explain the dangers of ramping up party sizes and what effect it could have on the game.
‘One of the strengths of Guild Wars 2 is that the UI is really clean and streamlined, it’s not overwhelming, it’s easy to see what’s going on, so one of the challenges we’re going to have is we don’t want to lose that capacity to easily look at the screen and understand what’s going on. We really don’t want people to spend their time looking at the edges of the screen watching progress bars move up and down in all directions. We want them drawn to the middle of the screen and watching the action and watching the things that are going on in game. So if we did a system in the future that lets you see more and more of what’s going on, we have to build it with those things but keep in mind that we don’t want to just cover the screen in UI everywhere.’"
I’m actually surprised at how many people feel a need for improvement for commander and squads, but seem ambivalent about voicing their opinions. The inability to group with over 5 players with some control over the makeup of the group still astounds me.
Hoping some love is given to commander and squads the next big update. Be nice to see something from a dev too!
I am here to crush your hopes but you wanted to hear something from a dev.
From this interview: http://www.zam.com/story.html?story=31615&storypage=2
“Q: Currently, the party size in Guild Wars 2 is limited to five. With new content arriving for guilds to do together, I asked Colin if this meant that larger groups would become an option.
A: It’s something that we talk about a lot, certainly larger party size comes up in World vs. World sometimes, it’s not something we’re actually working on right now, but it is something we’re discussing: what systems would we potentially put in place to support this if we wanted to do it down the road? Currently, we’re not working on anything like that, but if we find that with the addition of the system, or as World vs. World continues to evolve, if we need to add systems like that, we’re certainly open to looking at them."
I think with TS3 you can set squads and with different push to talk keys talk to different sets of folk. Plus party leaders can always draw on maps and set waypoints (and hopefully they know landmark names). I don’t know how useful that is to you since my guild’s only been split in two and that’s complicated enough for me, haha.
My favourite is when a Gates of Madness commander transferred off and then posted on the forums that Gates of Madness has too few commanders.
Lulz!
Did he transfer off because he was one of very few commanders, and got tired of leading it himself? If so, thats some what understandable.
Probably but that’s boring. I prefer to see what silliness and irony I can in things to give myself a smile =)
Here’s why I think it’s kittenty…
Even after leaving the server for dead, they come back and talk about love and how important it is to them.
Don’t you have any respect for your old server? In any case, I’m sure IoJ will settle in to around the 6th tier.
My favourite is when a Gates of Madness commander transferred off and then posted on the forums that Gates of Madness has too few commanders.
I think class representation in WvW has some to do with what people wanted to play in PvE and through the personal story. Otherwise I think there’d be more mesmers and less warriors and rangers.
had some fun 3 way battles this past week looking forward to what this week will bring. My guild doesnt WvW as much (more of a tPvP guild) so I will be looking for groups to join up with or other guilds to work along side with on Gates of Madness. As for the other servers, as much as I like grouping up, I’m going to try and kill you, sorry
.
in-game char. – Noskillz
Welcome to run with us =) We’re usually in the bad guy borderlands every evenin.
I’ve always looked at it as a harmless thing. No one in any invulnerable spot is contributing to the fight and you have to go really out of your way to get trolled by it.
The elementalists in that video failed in the first 30 seconds.
If I were one of the attackers I would have done a /laugh after capping the supply camp and let them go running off. WvW is objective based.
The elementalists lost the objective.
They failed.
There you have it, if you ever walk by an objective on the map and do not immediately cap it you have failed.
It looks like you have people who want different things and are going in different directions. This sort of thing happens often in life and is natural.
I think Anvil Rock is the sPvP server? All my sPvP friends transferred to Anvil Rock, at least. If I was on Anvil Rock, I would just be like super sad all the time goin “Why won’t the sPvP people help us?”.
When fighting with unfamiliar people it’s hard to gauge what they’re going to do. So when I’m with strangers I’m all like “Pfft, I’m not dyin for these fools, they can go first” but when I’m with 5 guildies and the leader says “We are charging those 20 guys over there” I’m like “IT’S A RACE TO THEIR FACES AND I AM GOING TO WIN”.
The things a guardian can do in WvW like buff allies, provide stability for long periods of time, and stop movement no one else can do. I think that’s more useful than anything a warrior can do. I feel like most warriors build to be best at killing someone who is AFK.
Man am I happy to be on Maguuma and never had to worry about guild drama or read so many words about it.
If your server isn’t all bots, it has drama =)
This Kaineng thing is so weird. Watching Kaineng these few weeks has really felt like watching a train crash in slow motion.
And why is that exactly? We’re not having any issues with it. Care to elaborate?
Scores like 450k to 60k are not an issue? Kaineng hasn’t done WvW in a while, it’s matches have just been a series of jokes. Not only has this tier been a write off but NS now has been crippled further by WM, who is out on a mission to prove to Tiers 2-8 that a Tier 1 guild from Tier 1 belongs in Tier 1. I mean, if you’re having a good time, I imagine you will enjoy more of the same next week.
Thanks for elaborating. We really can’t help that the score is what it is short of taking the week off on mass. I’m not sure why you say we haven’t done WvW in a while though. I pretty much thought that’s what we were doing.
I spoke with stronger words than I meant to and now that you’ve quoted it I can’t take it back. Ignore what I said. I just meant you guys are sort of crashing through the tiers and, like watching a train crash, I am curious where it will stop. I can’t really say anything about WM or anyone that I don’t know, let alone about their motivation.
I am sad Northern Shiverpeaks lost some WvW’ers, that’s always a lil’ disheartening (thankfully my server is just about out of guilds to lose, haha).

All I know is DH better be blue this week or im blowing 20g on golems and taking 1 tower in blue bl. 99.9% is worse than 10% for map completion
I think once there was a week were it came down to the final day before reset to have someone crowned the winner with DH. DH/DB/ and i cant remember the other server.
Great fights allaround on all fronts. Cant wait for next week now
Sorry bud, you’re still green.
If you can find 20 people to man golems and another 20 people to keep the golems safe and get them all to round up the 2000 supply and then get them all to show up at the tower you want, you are one of the better commanders in this tier I’d say.
You think the main problem with WvW is that you’ve had stable match making? #tier2problems
I also can’t think of a reason anyone should transfer to Maguuma because I don’t know anything about that server or anyone on it.
It would be super convenient!
Ah, excellent, now we have a thread where people have come to advertise their servers. Now we don’t need every server making their own thread.
Gates of Madness: I mean, the name is cool. You want a cool server name, right?
Sea of Sorrows is better.
Gates of Madness makes me think of maniacal clowns throwing acid pies. Sea of Sorrows just makes me think of sad puppies. Look at the sad puppy dog eyes…go ahead, I dare you.

Yeah, but when people ask us “u mad?” we get to make this face.

okay idk if anyone from their guild will see this, but i want to give a shoutout of respect to the Guild Ravens Hold in GOM, your all very coordinated, and very talented players, everytime you guys show up its always an intense fight.
keep it up!, its been a fun week
Thanks! I totally just got killed by Henge of Denravi on Henge of Denravi Borderlands so that’s good to hear!
All classes should get 25% run speed with no signet outside of battle. Just to move around the world a little more quickly but to still encourage exploring.
In battle, classess with lighter armor should be able to move more quickly than those with medium armor who should be able to move more quickly than those with heavy armor
There’s already an inherent speed buff for being outside of combat.
I played three builds on my mesmer (centaur runes, air runes, and undead runes) and yeah, I mean, I never felt like I was super disadvantaged. But it seems weird there’s only one skill that gives a speed boost (focus 4.. the random ones don’t really count). I don’t know how to explain what I think is wrong, it’s just this feeling in my gut of “Really? Unless I use focus I’m just out of luck?”. Maybe it’s to make the class not so independent? Who knows.
Theoretically, Tier 8 could have the best coverage in the game and have 24/7 coverage and all the best guilds, but if their matches were close, they would never even see Tier 7 unless a server in tier 7 absolutely imploded. and dropped enough rating to have one of them move up.
That’s actually not really a bad thing. I mean, if the matches are fair (and supposedly fun as well then), why change tiers?
I expect all ArenaNet wants to accomplish is that each of the tiers are fairly matched. If they don’t go from best to worst as 1 to 8 (1 to 9 in Europe), they probably don’t lose as much sleep over it.
If everyone had a 25% run speed signet then it’d be the same as if no one had one. It makes some classes special. If you want everyone moving 25% faster, might as well just make the maps smaller and everyone doesn’t have to fiddle with signet in for out of combat and signet out for in combat.
Mesmer mobility is pretty awful though. Most have to run a specific rune set to deal with it.
It would help if mesmer focus 4 and guardian staff 3 didn’t have weird stacking issues (let alone separate behaviour for each).
There aren’t many Gates of Madness videos so a guildie decided to make one =)
I get the impression people like winning and don’t like losing, no matter the tier. So people winning in lower tiers get sad when they’re losing in higher tiers even though they’re stronger than they ever were.
Having held this conversation in The Anvil Rock Defender’s VoIP server some days ago, I came to essentially agree with what styx has said here, and fundamentally disagree with what Jscull says (including his sour attitude).
I’m getting misty eyed. Raven hold me plz
Anvil Rock and Gates of Madness BFFs!
A lot of what you do in WvW makes you money, even if the objective fails (like a keep you’re defending gets taken) so repair costs aren’t something you have to farm separately for.
Everyone who isn’t 80 is bumped up to 80. As long as your gear is concurrent with your level, I’d guess it’s about 20-30% difference between you and someone that’s level 80 in full exotic gear.
Often we’ve invited new WvW players in our guild TS and parties to kind of help them get the feel for WvW and what goes on. I mean, I could tell why I think it’s fun but maybe look for an organized group and see if you can’t join them (you don’t have to join their guild or anything) for a bit. That’s my recommendation if you want to see what WvW is like because right now you seem sort of lost about what is happening.
Jscull, I feel like you are overvaluing the ability to fight against larger numbers. Yeah, it takes some skill and energy and is a lot of fun but it’s not everything there is to WvW. You need people to do other things and they need to be rewarded for doing them else they’re not going to get done. Leading zergs into choke points is useful but clearly not everyone can be doing it else this is just going to turn into a big camping fest.
And the 25k kills for commander makes so little sense. 25k kills would have made 0 sense 3 months ago and it will make even less sense 3 months from now. Kill counts are always going up.
This is indeed my first WvW game. My guild is about 5-10 actives at a time who usually fight against larger zergs but personally the skill I value most in a commander is reading a map and predicting what enemy forces are going to do. That’s really hard for the game to quantize and it does not at all up one’s kill count.
Putting it on kills is terrible. Getting kills just shows you man a lot of siege or have a lot of AoE, neither of which reflect your ability to lead. It does say something about how much time you spent in WvW but might as well just tie it to time played then.
I think the 100 gold is better than kills (even if it’s not ideal) because usually multiple people save up the gold and buy it for someone and that at least shows that there are people who are putting their trust in you to lead them.
Actually, counting kills by itself isn’t awesome. Repairing, scouting, escorting dolyaks, running support skills, patrolling maps that aren’t yet contested by zergs, fighting losing battles to stall opponents rather than drop them, flipping camps/towers while their would be defenders are occupied elsewhere, these things (I’m sure there’s more I haven’t thought of) are probably more important than just racking up kills for yourself and shouldn’t be dismissed.
I’m only posting to break up all the Eternal Battlegrounds talk.
Been having lots of fun dying in Darkhaven Borderlands!
Help me out, I’m not sure on this.
I think hitting the door gives credit. If that is the case, treb’ing a door would give you credit but treb’ing a wall doesn’t. That don’t seem right.
Personally, I feel like Borlis Pass had too many guilds with the word war as a tag to begin with.
I never corpse dance but sometimes some of my friends, well, the adrenaline is going. I guess they’d be less stressed if people didn’t try to kill them everywhere they went. Like really, we’re just walking through the country side smelling the flowers. Fully armed.
I also feel like there are gold disincentives to WvW. The prices of everything has been going up ever since Fractals got introduced (I don’t know if Fractals are to blame, I have heard rumours that people make more gold there but I know that) but how much we make in WvW hasn’t. Gearing up a new build or gearing a new character is getting very expensive (even before ascended gear is in) for a WvW player.
I feel like the following is true:
-when I PvE, I make more gold (when I WvW, I make a couple gold an evening)
-when I do dungeons, I am earning more gold -and- earning tokens toward armour/weapons that have a range of abilities
-when I do WvW, I die more than doing PvE so my repair costs are higher, further hurting how fast I make gold
-I use the most expensive food in WvW because it may mean more repair costs and I feel like it’ll make a difference in small scales battles I encounter. I feel like food is not at all necessary for me to succeed in dungeons (I don’t run Fractals)
-as PvE, I have to pay for waypoints but when I WvW, I have to buy siege and upgrades, which is more expensive
-hero badges and loot bags don’t always get picked up
-hero badges are earned slower than dungeon tokens
Edit: I’m just posting here because I’m in a WvW guild but to get new gear, most of us do dungeons. And we’d rather be doing WvW
(edited by styx.7294)
Kill/death ratios isn’t what WvW is about. Who holds what location and how the servers are doing are the important things and so that’s what needs to be measured. I find other metrics and achievements usually distract people. If there was an achievement for jumping 1000 times by the waypoints, you know where half the people on the map would be.
To show the ArenaNet icon, they have to represent the ArenaNet guild.
There’s one sociable one on Gates of Madness and I’ve seen him in WvW a number of times. His charr is a lil’ shaggy but not too shabby.
Mindless and boring? Strategy nonexistent? I don’t think you’re playing the same WvW I’m playing. If you’re roaming, there isn’t much decision on where to go and what impact to make but as soon as you get in the 5+ range with a group, there’s a lot of decisions and strategy to be made.
Most classes can do what vapour form does and they don’t even have to go down to do it and if everyone else can do it better, why do we need to nerf elementalists?
i dont see anyone else besides elementalists being able to use portals and enter keeps/towers at will when Downed AKA Dieing.
lets see warrior would have a long wait for #3 skill to run into a portal and only die 10 seconds later unless he kills someone before and revives.
Engineer : uhh what he’s gonna pull the portal with his grappling hook ?
Thief: only got a short teleport to location and stealth no skill that allow running and entering to portal.
Mesmer:somewhat like the thief except they spawn some clone to fight back yet again no “Run to portal”feature.
Necromancer:only drains hp poisons and fears those near him.
Ranger: damages and dazes and can revive the pet at location so pet can start reviving the ranger.
Stop lieing please.
I said “they don’t even have to go down”.
Endure pain, distortion, anything that gives block, elixer S, anything that teleports, even dodge rolls (even stealth to an extent), etc. All of these things will get you through a door no matter what skills people are using on you. And you don’t have to wait until you’re down to use them! Amazing. How do we stand for this?
Edit: Like, as an example, look at what engineers can do for 20 seconds starting at 0:40

I’m having an absolute blast with this match too! Go our tier! Boo other tiers!
If I’ve learned anything from this week, it’s that Sunnyhill is a place of nightmares.
From the first three posts I can already see this is going to be the best match EVAH!
I bought some equipment for my alt so I’ve only got like 600 left. I hope they just have them go in your inventory or something with the new update. The bag dropping thing is one of the sloppiest parts of WvW.
I dunno if I want a new currency – I mean, on one hand I don’t want yet another currency but on the other, I don’t want to be worrying about whether to buy siege with badges and invader gear now or save for who knows what a month from now.
And yeah, we desperately need a way to spend karma.
Awesome fighting in GoM borderlands earlier, managed to hold Kaineng off for ~ 2 hours at Cragtop tower until eventually you guys took out a lot of our defensive siege with the unnoticed trebs hiding near foghaven supply camp! We were able to get the garrison walls down but had no where near enough to make the push through the countless bodies you guys constantly threw at us. All in all had some good fun.
They tried Foghaven trebs earlier this week on us too when I was at Cragtop earlier this week. Luckily we had a treb inside to pre-emptively counter it.
I didn’t even know trebs from there could reach ’till this matchup.
I agree. Chest thumping arguments are a waste of time. I don’t care how many badges people got or how good they think they are or how much contempt they have for their opponents since none of those things help anyone improve. This applies to people from my server or other servers.
Looks like we’ll see you guys next week.
Not you Kaineng. Wohahaha.Operation Fail Train has commenced.
Apparently.
Look forward to it, you guys are good folk.
Edit: Talia, love it!
(edited by styx.7294)
This thread has gotten pretty silly.
GoM/HoD: This isn’t the first time you’ve been zerged. Stop acting like it. Kitten happens, and we’ll have a much better match-up next week.
Kain: You’re still new at having huge numbers in your favor. Learn to do so gracefully and not resort to being jerks about it. If Fubuki still plays, I can imagine he’s probably facepalming himself to death over some of the attitudes and tactics coming from Kaineng.
Personally, I don’t care who we fight or how badly we’re outnumbered. All I do is WvW, so nothing you bring to the table will ever send me back to PvE. Even if you manage to chase away all of my servermates, I’ll still be there throwing myself at 1vZerg ’til reset and taking as many of you kittens down with me as possible.
Now, back to the war.
I was sort of wondering about that at work. Yeah I have a lot of free time at work so what!?
All I could think of was that in most of the other face rollings I knew the servers or had played them. Now given I haven’t been wvw for as long as most of you I started in the BP/AR/GoM match ups.
When BP started growing we had played them and Won so when they started stretching their wings yeah it sucked loosing but hey off they went. Then AR exploded without BP here to hold them down. A couple of others came and went who rolled us, but it never felt as overwhelmingly pointless as this.
I mean I like to win sure, but even loosing I like to cap and hold stuff and feel like I am making progress. None of that is even remotely possible. It was just as boring last week for the same reason. There is no way to progress when you have everything.
And then here comes a server you have never even played before, so there are no ‘friends’. Just a bunch of kittens trying to kill you!!
And really when It comes down to it at the end of the day, I like GoM I like the people here, everyone is friendly and helpful, and most people rollin in EB don’t treat WvW like it is the end of the world. Perfect. But I’m Jealous. I want to win, I want to be relevant I don’t want to be just another Server at the bottom.
When AR wins and Moves up or BP or some of the others that have passed our way up or down, it was ok we knew them, they ‘earned it’. They weren’t just some server coming from no where full of spit, and beating us like a drum!
I guess I just need a hug and someone to cuddle me and tell me it will be alright. They have hit me so many times!! Not one hug!!
hug There, there, it’ll be alright. We’re all in this together. Darkhaven should be a more appropriate match.
Edit: As for Gates of Madness, we have some way to go before we start improving.
