i like elementalist because any other profession in this game can solo hard counter it

if the user playing the elementalist is horrible then that is absolutely the case.

Actually even the “average” player of another class trying their hand at Ele will realize they are constantly getting stomped by almost every other class/build out there.
The only case where the Ele is handed an easy win is 0/0/30/20/20 (diamond skin) D/D Ele going up against a full-condi Necro (carrion).
Other than that specific situation, it’s all hard work and out-playing your opponent.

That person might consider himself average while playing other professions but he is still horrible with the Ele if he is getting defeated that many times on 1v1 scenarios against all the other professions. The only time it is hard work is if you face a player that rarely lose 1v1. That’s when outplaying your opponent takes place.

Bad Eles are really really BAD… Good Eles are really really GOOD. This is a class with absolutely no middle ground. Its impossible to just be OK at Ele (if your just ok your bad, sorry) I don’t say that to be pretentious im currently bad at my Ele but i have only been on this toon for about a month so ill get there soon. The fact is, people think Ele sucks because you really have to be pro to make this class work, but if you are pro Ele is the strongest class out there hands down.

I just rolled an eel for the playstyle, you are the most adaptive class in the game.

Also ele requires the more APS then any other class (actions per second btw) you show me the best ele in the game and I’ll show you the best player in GW2.

This is a help me thread just a heads up. I have been playing GW2 sense beta and I consider myself to be pretty decent 1v1/1vx (we are talking PvP/WvW ofc) I usually play Engi Or Necro but I have Maxed out both of those toons and my next is going to be ELE.

Now I want to be clear that I use the term “Bunker” loosely hints the "" but I know absolutely nothing about building an Ele and if its anything like Engi it takes really knowing your class to come up with good builds.

With all that in mind im looking forward to a tough to master class with high payoff. What builds centered around survival/dueling can you recommend.

Also if anyone knows of some GREAT eles i can look up and watch videos are always helpful, is anyone currently considered one of the best Eles?

mesmer: 1 skill goes on cd
ele: all earth and air damage skills and all utilities go on cd

yep, the elementalist is perfectly viable

Funny how you can defend that this type of damage is balanced. It isnt always possible to evade an attack.

First… Any class can putt together a burst combo, most more better than ele.

Second… This has already been nerfed with the changes to arcane blast it’s harder to land, not impossible just harder.

And last I’m going to agree with the large majority here and say that you just got out played, if you saw him/her coming then as a Mesmer there were a dozen moves you had, but you just sat there and are his burst. If you didn’t see it coming then his/her build did what it was designed to do… The only thing it can do… Kill nubs

Not that I was talking to you, but if you were replying to my question, I was kinda hoping for a short answer.. a bunch of numbers combined with skills makes it very complicated and confusing.

While I didn’t read the text wall myself, it’s kind of rude to ask for help and then not read something that someone took time to post.

S/F is beter for might stacking if you want to know why then get your glasses out.

Um… No…
The only classes that are useful in PvE are warriors and guardians. Everyone else just fills in, so e suck slightly less than necromancer but I would never call them fine. The issue here is truly the lack of the trinity. GW2 is one of the first successful MMOs to pull off a PvE system without defined roles, therefor of course it’s a little hard to balance.

Most of the reasons people give for PvE being broken are totally right. Warriors and Guardians are not punished enough for being in melee range it’s true. But think about what would happen if they made PvE really challenging, people would rage quit. ( if you played the aitherblade or molten alliance dungeons you know what I mean.)

It all comes down to having a trinity, at one point casual player only had to “master” one aspect of the game and no matter how hard it got there was usually someone there to pick up the slack. If you were simply not that good you just played a less crucial role (like dps) and others made up for your crappy playing. In GW2 everything is so face roll easy that the only “viable” builds are pure dps monsters.

I took rocket boots and Napalm, burn on the toolbelt is strong enough to replace pistol OH, and the interrupts on the shield will hopefully stack some confusion. It would go very well with Incindiary powder I think but it feels like too much defensive to sacrifice to get it? Don’t know.

I would swap out Blood Injection and Speedy kits for it maybe. Does it make enough difference to be worth it?

I also feel I lack condi removal. I might take away rocket boots, get Incendiary Powder in replacement for it and use Elexir C for some removal? Only thing is that I loose control over my burns.

Your survivability is more about blocking/dodging and position then having an extra 100-200 toughness. With shield you have increased your survivability by a large ammount as well.

The skills are hard to pick and largely depend on what your doing, I only play conditions in small groups so I don’t worrie so much about condi removal, that’s why I take rocket boots. Also as an engi your bleeds & poison are kind of a joke (unless your nades) so burning is kind of our thing, IMO it’s worth the loss. If I were you I may drop Tool Kit and pick up Elixer Gun the triad off being better condition removal and healing and WEAKNESS!! But you lose the extra confuse from crowbar and the extra block.

I run 20/30/0/10/10 with P/S Healing Turret, Flame Turret, Rocket Boots, and Elixer Gun

I grab packed turrets trait and use Flame Turret and shield (and sometimes Healig Turret) for interrupts to get perexity. Then I focus on stacking burn and weakness. Sometimes I’ll use Flamethrower instead of turret (I don’t ever sit in the kit) but the tool belt is cool and it offers knockback and blind.

So… I have a warrior and an engineer, while a agree with the above posts (mostly) I find myself playing my Necro in pve all the time. I can’t really explain it but I find that I kick so much kitten

Just yesterday I was running AC when we were fighting the spider my party died when it was at like 75% I just finished the fight like a boss! (That was with full conditions)

Thanks! This is the reason I posted, it was a long time since I played it. I will swap a few things out and then post the tweaked version.

Just one question for you though, what would the reason be with going for shield AND go 30 into Firearms for 33% burning duration? I will go 30 into Firearms most likely looking at the options for getting the burning going stronger, and drop the idea of getting some power in there but go full condi. But where would I get the bruning from if not from pistol OH?

Och and yeah I mainly want to use the bombs because of the confusion stacking that goes with my runes, might not be worth it though?

I take Napalm IF I also take Rocket Boots because the Burn on the Tool Belt is strong. It also syncs with IP. If your looking for the hybrid approach you could also take Mod Ammo instead.

Ill bite… I have been playing Engineer from beta and I would say im an expert (full of myself i know lol) I mainly WvW now days so I think i may be able to help a bit.

Ill be honest your build needs a bit of help, not because it the “Popular” build or anything like that. I wont tell you to use nades lol I don’t (even though I prolly should)

Lets look at skills first, for rabid and perplexity I recommend Shield as it fits the play style very well and helps proc your runes with the interrupt, also shield is one of the best tool an engi has for WvW with the blocks and stuns available it more than makes up for the extra damage from offhand pistol.

*Bombs*can work very well with this set and the damage is nice weather you play hybrid condition or power. Tool Kit is a good choice for any build just for the Pull and the extra Block but for conditions i find Rocket Boots usually make it on my bar for mobility and burn (that would help make up for the extra burn you would lose from taking Shield over OH Pistol)

I like Elixer C because its easy to use but I find that Elixir Gun has better condition removal on a shorter CD, it also has a lot of other useful tools.

Now on to your traits… don’t take this the wrong way I don’t like to be a jerk or anything but when i first looked at your traits i called TROLL, just in case I decided to post anyways. If you are trolling then well… I called it lol if not… sorry bro.

It looks like your going for Hybrid and that totally cool but you just have so many traits that dont fit your setup.

first Shrapnel this trait is great… with nades as they have 3x explosions that are faster, Bombs only have 1 and 15% is not a high chance to cause a relativity short bleed. also Energized Armor just… no and when you could be taking something like Stabilized Armor, Cloaking Device or Protection Injection instead it just doesn’t make seance.

Auto Med Response is BOSS though, good job on that (pro tip its had to land but that trait makes the new heal super amazing)

Blood Injection works with Rabid armor but i just feel there are better traits you could take here.

AND you skipped Firearms… for what? Napalm Specialist is a no brainier for your set up and Mod Ammo is great if you want your bombs to do good direct damage. and its not like the other traits in the line are weak the 10 and 20 point spots can be filled with something more useful than Blood Injection or Energized Armor

I get wanting a Unique build that’s fun to play and fits your style, you notice i don’t really tell you what build to go for. But our traits work in specific ways and when used in the right combos we can really be strong.

10/30/0/0/30 is the best burst build i have played, its gimmicky but kitten its effective.

Using Bomb Kit and Tool Kit you drop BoB then Magnet Pull your helpless idiot into the blast, you should still have time to switch back to rifle, Blunderbuss them in the face and land a Jump Shot just as BoB tears them apart. I find that WAY more effective then nades for burst.

I agree with the OP that our traits don’t really sync well but you have to consider we are a hybrid class so it kind of makes seance. I really think Grenadier needs to be a Master lever trait I dare say we could move IP to Grand Master and give it a small buff.

I didn’t include gear/runes because i just made a link real quick, but i run full zerker (sometimes ill throw in a few soldiers but overall i don’t feel like it makes much of a diff)

I mainly WvW in small groups or solo roaming but i sPvP with a team 2x a week and ill run this build 70% of the time. I actually feel like SD builds got a buff to surviveability through Armor Mods and i just dropped Rifled Barrel’s (i do miss it sometimes in WvW) for Infused Precision to keep perma Vigor.

My survivability is all about mobility, dodge like a pro and learn when to use rocket boots and you will do just fine. I always have gear shield if things get harry. If i get the jump on them i have no problem 1v2 or even 1v3 (and not under leveled scrubs) in a fair fight i win most 1v1s.

I have a Dire build as well and of course its tougher to kill but overall i like the spike damage i get from SD and even though they are great i just hate Nades (oh my poor wrists)

Hoping to get some good feedback here, with MM I feel like there are a lot of strong builds (and posts about builds) but there seems to be an open debate as to what kind of gear is best. Right now I’m running a soldiers/assassins mix with traveler runes. I also have a full dire MM build (it’s fun) and full soldiers. I’m getting ready to upgrade to T3 and buy a new set of ascended gear and I’m wondering g what you guys run.

Also if anyone has a link to some MM PvP videos that would be cool.

I’m wondering what the communities experience with the new healing venom is though, it seems like a somewhat tankie condi build with venom share could have some solid utility in small group play. Has anyone used this yet, how effective is Skelk Venom?

I don’t think I would run venom share for solo roaming but how is it as an off build?

I am a fan of

Sigil of Generousity / Sigil of Purity (cheaper but worse)

Power Necros spend a lot of time in death shroud and accumulate a ton of conditions while they are in death shroud. Death shroud has no way to remove conditions either.

Finally most power Necros take traits Soul Reaping or Curses 15 that making getting crits in shroud less of a problem.

Sigil of Generousity drops from personalized winter days gifts, so you can farm them or buy them now while they are “cheap.”

This Sigil is great for Condi builds, i have not tried it on my Power build (ill have to do that)

With my condi build Ill run it on my staff and its just one more way to deal with conditions lol

I’ve already tested it. Sigil of earth is better. The damage is too low to really suggest using, even though torment is over all a “better” condition then bleeding. That cool down is what kills it. If it wasn’t an aoe and had no cool down it would be better.

They stack. Sigil of torment is the only sigil with its own ICD. So, you can use earth on main hand and torment on off hand.

Do the torment stacks still putt earth on CD or are they 100% independent? because if they truly stack then torment is pretty sick and im going to need to pick it up lol.

Sigils depend on what you are doing, I’m going to assume WvW or maybe sPvP with a PVT build.

For PvE it does not really matter, stack bloodlust or something.

For PvP I like to use sup sigil of hydromancy for chill and sigil of energy for endurance. Stacking crit and pow is good but overall having controll is what necros are all about in pvp/wvw

I’m not full conditionmancer, I run 20/30/20/0/0 MM/condition build. For PvP I’ll run with a full bar of minions and Consume Conditions (ofc) for PvE I’ll swap out Wurm for Elidimec and run Blood Fiend.

I’m planning on making a Dire set but I’m low on laurels so my trinks will have to wait. It’s a fun hybrid build, minions do great direct damage and conditions… Well I just really like s/d lol.

I currently run MM with soldiers or sometimes I mix in some zerker gear. I have been thinking about trying a 20/30/20/0/0 build with dire gear. The build would be for WvW mostly running with s/d obviously.

Some questions I have for the Necro community, has anyone had success with a build like this? Would you still take terror? What runes/weapons would you use? (I was thinking bleed duration and givers weapons.

If you had 2 equally good players dualing with the same class/build and one was wearing the new ascended armor while the other one was not… It would make no difference the winner of the fight would be the one who didn’t make any mistakes not the one who had 5% more armor and 30 more power.

I have like 3-4 of the little buggers around all the time, they proc death nova and leech life (if I go camp master) plus they cause bleeding… HOW is this a dumb trait for 5 ponts. I really did not expect the community to hate this skill.

It “was” useless but with more hp for minions and a shorter cd this trait is awesome!

You don’t, you have other pets for this, the idea is to start with a few of the little buggers and just let them suicide death nova the boss. Overall for a minor trait this is very cool.

If we want our day we need to charge the light brigade (ok dark brigade) into sPvP and… Lose. Not intentionally lose, lose because your tools don’t work is good enough.

Lose badly often and enough that the sPvP forums are full of posts about noob necros. Lose badly that necro becomes a synonym for noob. And lose often. And keep losing. Lose until you see that he other team has a necro and you know that means you in. Then lose some more.

See, if people respond to nerfs by just not playing the class it wolnt be improved. Anet will focus on what their customers are playing.

You want the actual truth? The devs that designed the skill and are generally are responsible for the games design and ideas are painfully aware, and probably knew that this skill was subpar. But guess what, they don’t get to make the big decisions, their bosses do, and I am entirely convinced that it is their “leadership” that makes the bad calls.

Which, btw, is a sentiment shared by members within the own company, as shown by a rating service which was posted around a while ago. ANet has really bright people working there (just look at the concept of our skill), their problem is the higher ups who end up making the decisions and holding the rest back.

Agreed, that’s why I say anet and not devs. Been playing MMOs forever and there are always balance issues but in GW2 im just offended that they try and mask it as a buff lol. I love this game… and i love my necro, but man if they insult my intelligence one more time!

Yeah, when this skill gave a passive syphon hand had some actual synergy with other Necro traits there was hope, but now its just rubbish.

The internal cooldown on the passive is also just plain awful.

It’s just a poor version of the Warrior healing signet… and outside of pve the active also is useless (especially 1v1).

Warrior healing sig = 700HPS all the time
Necromancer SoV = 300HPS while being attacked lol

The only reason warrior healing sig is so strong is because you can dodge/kite for a while and regain some substantial health. We have to be getting beat on for our 55% less effective healing sig

PS i realize this whole post is ironic but the more i learn about this skill the more peeved i get so… sorry.

It’s just so…mind boggling.

My mind is blown because even un-nerfed the skill was sketchy take away the ICD and allow the passive to steal health instead of just “heal” shoot take away the 5s that the mark is active and just let it be a flat 25 stacks…. and its still a sub par skill. Go ahead and double the amount that this skill scails with healing power and health and its STILL sub par, getting close to a decent skill but not there yet.

and they pre release nerf it on NECRO of all classes… because… why!?

Sadly no, it doesn’t. That used to be the case (for the datamined version), but that got removed. It only heals when you are hit, not steal health.

I swapped over to 20/0/20/0/30 build using a full bar of minions (I’ll swap out Blood Fiend for other heals depending on content). Part soldier gear, part berzerker (eventually I plan to get Cleric’s gear), the build basically just uses minions to face-tank mobs and make your general PvE experience much easier on both yourself and the group, and I sit in DS using a fairly standard, though slightly weaker, LB build.

Im running 30/0/20/20/0 full MM with a similar play style. I pick up Vamp Master for the minor boost to minion DPS and I use dageer #2 and Axe #2 for dps. 20/0/20/0/30 looks like it would be fun though and probably push more dps. I have also been thinking of a 20/30/20/0/0 Dire build.

I was trying to stay positive about the new healing skill, at first glance it looked to open up some unique new builds… but then…

…1s ICD on passive AND active
…1.5s Cast time
…35s coo down
…not even your minions could proc its active! (this was my last hope)

So here we are, just hoping for a hotfix once the Necro community complains enough. Well that’s not going to happen so im thinking lets work together and make lemonade out of lemons!

Im thinking of building around the passive effect, the active is total rubbish for you (its okay for a group) you will only have an opportunity to proc 4 of the active ticks 4! So lets take a look at the passive effect together and brainstorm some situations where it can be useful.

Im thinking of a DS bunker build focusing on keeping up retaliation and confusion (perplexity, and im an asura) I would use the SoV for minor mitigation and extra dps. The ICD is stupid here but w/e.

What are your thoughts?

If the new healing skill has no ICD on its active then combining that with dagger #2 will be really cool.

They already announced (and demonstrated in the dev livestream) that both the passive and active have ICD’s.

According to the livestream, and it’s tooltip, the active buff has 25 stacks.

Yup. 25 stacks, and a 1 second ICD per attacker as well. Given the aftercast on the signet, you yourself can only consume for 4 stacks unless you already popped Locust Swarm (since that hits once/second) or they’re standing an a well (again, precast).

Which is a good thing it has an ICD… It would be very OP if it did not.

It needed an ICD or a stack limit. Not both. Both turned it from useful in niche situations (if an ICD, then big world events or focus-fired tower/keep lords. If stacks, then smaller group support) to being terrible across the board.

If the new healing skill has no ICD on its active then combining that with dagger #2 will be really cool.

Ahh i missed that… well that’s complete rubbish.

May be cool for an MM if your pets can trigger the healing/extra dps.

It’s actually frightening (for the future of the game) to see them allocating funds so heavily towards the classes that are getting played a lot.
Call me paranoid, but that leaves the impression that they are in a fd up financial situation and wanna milk the game for what it’s worth, just barely satisfying the biggest share of players with the lowest investments possible :/

THIS!! If you look at the F2P models that are successful most are pay2win, GW2 has impressed me by making most of the purchasable content either cosmetic of some kind of minor convenience.

Pare that with the fact that Anet comes out with new free content every month (great fun, but not cheap for Anet) and the fact that one year later we still have not seen a real expansion or new classes/skills and yeah im worried that the game is not profitable. or at least not as profitable as it could be.

I give kudos to Anet for there commitment to a true F2P environment

Yes… but we did “have” our day. All in all Necromancer is a high skill high reward class disguised as an easy faceroll class, i.e. people suck.

If the new healing skill has no ICD on its active then combining that with dagger #2 will be really cool.

They already announced (and demonstrated in the dev livestream) that both the passive and active have ICD’s.

Ahh i missed that… well that’s complete rubbish.

May be cool for an MM if your pets can trigger the healing/extra dps.

So i want to make it super clear that this is not a QQ post. I love my Necromancer and overall I don’t think we are in a bad spot (go ahead and flame me)

Ahhh to the matter at hand, GW2 Necromancer suffers from an identity crisis. The “idea” was to make Death Shroud out gimmick but its just not interesting enough. In GW1 you had some great choices to make and they really effected your play style. Obviously Minion Masters were better but even placing that aside your Blood tree felt much more like a “Necromancer”

In GW1 you were constantly sacrificing your HP in place of your MP, then you had a Life Steal effect to kind of balance things off, It created a balancing act and every ability felt more important.

Curses created one of a kind effects that would punish your enemy’s for making certain actions, I like conditions in GW2 but the necro doesn’t bring anything unique to the table, there is no reason that abilities couldn’t cause non condition effects as well as existing effects.

What was your favorite part of GW1 necro and how is the GW2 necro different, are there any areas where GW2 necromancer beats GW1?

Also people seem to be way too upset about this new healing skill, it looks cool to me. Shoot we already have the best heal in the game so im not going to cry too hard. The other new heals do look cool but most of them are situatonal just like this one.

Running vamp traits with MM works well, vamp master is a sick trait and it keeps me alive in most situations. Running all the siphon traits plus runes/sigils and food and vamp master adds up to be some nice HPS, don’t get me wrong I agree they need a major buff.

Eles, even d/d are squishy and the d/d build is getting a slight nerf on dec 10th. I roam with s/d on my ele for the burst, its fun 1v1 but 1vx its game over. Necromancer just has so much HP and Deathshroud on top of all the control available its easy to survive. Maybe im just good at the class but i dont see the sustain issues that others do.

Only class i hate on my necro are THFs and then most of them are scrubs so its no big deal, but when you fight a really good thf 1v1 you will know lol.
