No More Tricks, Scarlet

  • This achievement requires a good deal of skill and awareness, make sure you are watching for the red telegraphs that show where the Holograms will fire next and make sure you do not run through any active scorch marks during the fight, good luck!

What if the pet is on passive? It still takes damage.

In Tune

  • This achievement is also a tricky one, I would recommend you disable your auto attack so that you are precisely controlling when you hit the holograms. Necros, Rangers, Mesmers; watch your minions, pets, clones, and phantasms, their damage counts against you if you are not attuned. Engineers, your turrets fall under that category as well. For all professions, I would recommend crafting your build based solely on damage your character does and not use any summons or sources of outside damage. Again, attention is critical, always be aware of your current attunement and the attunement of the hologram you are fighting.

This would be real easy if I could perma-stow my pet. Just sayin.

With PvX (General) changes. I like them all. Might actually use spirits more in PVE/Dungeons. I really like the idea of having condi removal on TU because pretty much the only way I get it right now is through a signet or HS.

With Beastmastery & Pets… 1, 2, and 3 are moving in the right direction, IMO. Especially the damage reduction to pets from AOE. 4… 4… Four… Make that happen so I can perma-stow for buff and… I don’t know… Words would be unable to describe the joys I would be feeling… #5… I don’t use the BM line so do whatever you want there.

In Weapons I like the direction it is moving but #2 on the sword is perfect as is. As long as I still have my leap and all that good stuff on sword main hand AA… then, fine. Rest of them look good.

Yes to Skirmishing and Wilderness.

PVE
Beastmastery & Pets… Yeah. They do die easily. I’ll not use #2 or #3 traits. 3s stability isn’t enough in PVE. I’ll still be using RoA for stability if that makes it in.

Shouts… They should be instacast just like on my Guard and Warrior. Insane that they are not already.

I’d give Keen Edge a try, but I doubt I’ll take it much… Spotter as a straight damage increase is much more valuable than what you have posted up there. Putting RNG into it… No. I’d try out Hunters Tactics but won’t use Beastmaster’s Might. EE should include shortbow for range increase as well… Still won’t use Remorseless.

Still not going to spec into NM… Seems like those would be really handy for WvW though.

I like a 85% of what you got up there, Allie. I like it from a PVE/Dungeon prespective.

Question: if we are going to keep the same F1-F4 controls, is there any possible way to get an F5 keybind for active/passive? Thinking on it further, why not a keybind for stow/unstow?

I guess with that being said which direction do we need to head with this CDI, Allie?

For the spirit absorbtion thing could it just be I cast the spirit (which those cast times are too long for my liking) and I immediately absorb without any further action? I.E. hitting F to absorb. IMO, that’d make it much more fast paced. Option #1 sounds like what I have read of preparations from GW1. Which I like the idea of. Option #2 definitely sounds like Ele elemental weapons.. which I do quite enjoying using on my Ele (except for the axe depsite the might stacks). Could be interesting depending on how it is implemented. Interesting would be definite if they made one of the spirits give us a staff for support that was a carbon copy of the guardian staff or a sun spirit that gave us a main hand axe that was carbon copy of the warrior axe…

Ranger Pets Removable/Dismissable?

Jon Peters said during the Dec 10th Ranger CDI they know the pet has flaws, especially the F2. They can band-aid but not rewrite the code because it would “break a million things” … basically the man power and resources needed to do this is not going to happen. Allie Murdock reinforced what Jon Peters said earlier on in the CDI. Jon Sharp said during a STOG that we are not going to get more control over the pet because it will scare away new players.

Looks like me until Jon Peters and Jon Sharp change their minds or get fired and replaced with persons that feel that the pet should be made optional and we should have more control over it if we choose to have it out, my Ranger will remain mule status.

This latest bit of Living Story I tried with my Ranger, but the pet no matter the micro managing (because I don’t have a keybind for active/passive for some reason) my pet stayed dead most of the time. Why? I was in melee. Why was I melee? Because I actually want to do damage and get buffs instead of pew-pewing from 1200-1500 units back lol’ing. Those big ol’ red circles the poor pet just went full we todd ed and just stood there and didn’t dodge. Then durng the hologram phase when I was dodging through rainbow lines on the ground the pet just kitten ed right through them. So, did it on my Thief and Guard causing the runs to go much better.

On a different note: The class really isn’t as catastrophically disastrous as some of these people will have you believe. Most Rangers seem unwilling to experiment and discover the versatility that the class offers. However, 18 months later and (at least what seems like) just two meaningful patches – Aquaman, and Incredible Hulk pet – it’s getting really frustrating.

I have 10 different sets of exotic armor that I use in PvE and WvW (Zerker, Assassin, Cleric, Magi, Settler, Soldier, Valkyrie, Rabid, Rampager, Shaman, and still working on a full set of Celestial and Apothecary)

Some of them are quite fun too. I will use Magi gear to basically buff my pet to beyond powerful, and I can take down almost anything, just by using the Lynx (I have tested to see if only my pet can take down Champions running around the open world, and it does actually work). I will use Settler’s gear with Melandru runes and lemongrass, and it is nearly impossible for me to die, even in a 1-2-3 v 1 scenario in WvW. I use Valkyrie gear for that 1 chance, 20K maul, and normally send even Warriors running away from me after doing it if I don’t 1-shot them.

Also, the Vast Majority of players in the game seem unwilling to experiment with new stats, and like to just stick with whatever they made first. Not just Rangers.

As Dur said, I’ll experiment with traits all day long but PVE gear is too expensive to be doing that with. I’d rather get a build (read: gear and traits) that is perfect for dungeons and it can be just ok in PVE then calling it a day…. nor am I doing another effin’ legendary. No. Just no. Not doing ascended either because I loathe time gating… I don’t consider dailies time gating because I always get those done with normal play.

Honestly, Anet should have been prepared for this. The only way they could not have been expecting rangers to ‘win’ the CDI and for a year and half’s worth a valid (and nutty) suggestions, complaints, bugs, etc. to come flooding in, is if they have been paying no attention to any feedback or forums whatsoever and aren’t running any kind of numbers themselves to see how things are going. Apart from anything else, this was a good opportunity for them to do some good PR stuff with the community, and it has so far failed spectacularly.

I’m pretty disappointed, actually. I never expected anything huge (total pet AI overhaul or something), but I thought it would at least be a chance for the devs to have some back and forth with players and look at ideas, even ‘band-aid’ ones, that would at least make us more balanced and viable and improve our QoL…maybe some trait changes, or a fix to the sword rooting. At this stage, all we know is that we’re not getting burst and potentially all the other professions are getting nerfed. Yay?

For me, if we’re not going to get meaningful responses to a thread started by Anet specifically with the intention to discuss rangers, it doesn’t seem that likely we’ll get dialogue anywhere else. I have less confidence that Anet is at least listening and trying now than I did before the CDI started, and that is a shame.

Edit: having seen Chris Whiteside’s post in the other CDI thread it appears my expectations regarding dev input to the CDIs was incorrect and it was mainly just meant to be us providing ideas, which I guess we have done pretty thoroughly at this point.

I agree 100% with everything you said except about the sword. I like it the way it is

I really really really really hope they do this.

I’m already switching classes because the pets aren’t going to be made optional… My ranger will be deligated to mule status. Wish I wouldn’t have wasted all those laurels on a permenantly handicapped class.

I love my Ranger. Hate my pet. My Ranger would be a lot better off without it. Pet management is easy if you are ranged, but if you are melee it is a whole ‘nother story. But then again, if you didn’t know that you aren’t going to be aware of the problems anyway. The suggestion to optional perma-stow is by all means needed.

Not to mention that the pet can’t land hits to save it’s life if the target is moving at all so I’m out of that ~30% damage most of the time anyway.

No…

•The only thing we are not open to is a real permastow option that would essentially take away the pet completely (ie an option that said always stow).

That means there is no perma-stow option. Period. That leaves no room for interpretation. It’ll be exactly as it is now. The we-todd-ed pet will not be always stowed away which means there is a time it will be forced back out. It is most likely that things will remain as they are and when you enter combat it will come back out by force, otherwise it would be perma-stowed which Allie said that is not an option.

So yeah, my hope for the class is dead. Breaks my heart that the Ranger will always be handicapped by the pet. I guess I can just learn to love my thief as much as my Ranger… eventually. I did move my brony bow to my thief afterall as I expected this outcome despite the hope my heart was holding.

I can speed run on my Ranger in a few dungeons, but I can do it much easier and bring more to the party on my Guardian and Warrior… even my Mesmer. Full zerker of course.

Having said those things speed clearing does involve knowing how to play your class and more importantly learning the encounters so much so that you don’t have to think about the encounters it is all instinctive reaction. That is how people can melee things like Lupi. Once you learn the tells of the moves that are coming it because easy… What tickles me pink is when people talk about content being trivialized by this or that when the real culprits are intelligence and the ability to learn. Of course, I raise my own difficulty by drinking heavily before a dungeon run and time it vs how much 151 I’ve had.

A ranger without a pet is nothing like a warrior. Our weapon skills are nowhere near as good as warrior. Lose pets and buff traps and redesign our bow skills and sword and then we’d be somethng special.

Pet AI hasn’t improved since beta so my suggestions to improve the class disregard the pet as Anet has done during the life of the game. They probably will improve F2 but it took a year and a half to do just that. As I’ve said before, with ascended gearing I want to only play my ranger, and they need to be fixed.

I know a ranger without a pet is nothing like a warrior, I am just using that as an example of a ranger without a pet is a class with no mechanic, low skill ceiling, and boring repetitive play style. Which is very much like other MMOs where you can press skills in order half asleep and still be competitive with someone widely aware of the fight.
…it is like Mesmer without any clones, or thief with no initiative if that makes it better for you.

Your example is extremely poor. Horribly bad. Why? Because they core mechanics for other classes work. I cannot speak for the Necro as I don’t have one, but I have one of the other seven. They all work. Steal for the thief is not great, but the initiative works. And yes, the thief has two core class mechanics. Clones work on my Mesmer. Adrenaline does it’s job on my Warrior. Virtues work on my guardian as expected. Toolbelt skills work on my engineer as I expect them to and when I hit the button (although some of those cooldowns seem a bit much). Switching between attunements and said attunements work on my Ele. The only core mechanic that does NOT work as EXPECTED is the pet. So I repeat, from my playing experience, your example is bad. Bad bad.

I would be happy with permastow even if I get no buff from it.

I hear that so much between map/say/guild chats.

Allie, I would like to humbly suggest that the dev team attempts to simply create an archer role in some other class, then, given time. Clearly the demand is there seeing as it’s a very large basis for why people want the pet stowed, and honestly, if that isn’t happening due to the developers’ vision, then something needs to be done to accommodate for it. Warrior Longbow and thief shortbow simply are inadequate alternatives.

I agree with you 1,000% on the bolded part… wait, should have bolded the whole kitten thing because looks like I’ll be spending even less time on my Ranger… Until it comes time to throw stuff into the forge.

As I stated, if a BM-based ranger is capable of having the pet get such bonuses to remain equal with a non-pet ranger, I don’t see the inherent problem as then the damage values remain approximately the same. Mind you, the pet ranger is also capable of applying more stacks of vulnerability and debuffs to kill the boss faster and soak aggro.

I run signets on my ranger because RoA/Signet of the Wild + QZ and a well-timed Signet of the Hunt maximizes damage potential. And that’s exactly the point I present here: I run no utilities as it stands despite the condi meta in WvW just because that’s the kind of character I want to play. My strategy, even in dungeons, is to not get hit and use heals properly. Why should dedicated BM’s have simply inadequate pets/utility or dedicated archers suffer from ridiculous damage falloff? Simply giving players the option to pick a style is much better than telling them just to play spirit bunker and like it.

Pet can only apply those vul and other stacks if it actually lands the hits… which it frequently doesn’t even against other AI mobs (unless I’m tanking for the pet).

I’ll use s+wh with RoA+QZ since I don’t run the Beastmaster signet.

Against non-moving bosses? I don’t recall my pet ever missing one of those.

Against regular mobs, yea it might miss if you don’t play properly, but is a ranger’s pet’s ability to land opening strike imperative in general PvE mobs? It certainly shouldn’t be when debating dungeon viability. A beastmaster should be utilizing F1 for initating an attack before assigning his attack as well in order to maintain aggro on the pet and not himself, so the mob will not move as pets cannot attract aggro by themselves, thus Opening Strike will always hit. This is only not the case in WvW, and even then I’m not denying that pet AI needs a fix or an increased hitbox, but that simply Jon Peters publicly announced AI will never be fixed/reworked due to software/hardware limitations per the server-client model.

I do not see how this makes beastmaster builds any less viable in dungeons, which are really the only necessary aspects of PvE to consider since rangers are outright overpowered in general PvE due to the pets being able to take so much aggro and the mobs not moving around much.

I can get a video of a Ranger setting the pet on a target and then pulling the target off the pet by walking near-by (no other actions, no attacks, no skill use) and reproduce the effect numerous times.

That’s exactly what I"m talking about. See it all the time. And if you think I’m going to wait for my pet you got another thing coming. And yes, beastmaster build in a dungeon is not anywhere close to being optimal… Unless the target is stationary and NEVER moves.

wouldnt it be better if the pet provided an aura regardless if it was stowed or not, but tone it down accordingly and keep it active through Death of the pet?

for example

Jaguar Aura = the ranger does 5% more damage and every 90seconds applys Stealth for 2 seconds
Dead Jaguar = Ranger does 3% more damage and every 60seconds applys Stealth for 4 seconds

Dead pet= Defensive aura

Alive pet = Offense Aura

I address some of these here, albeit we posted very close to each other :P

I think what needs to be addressed is not the fact that stowing the pet becomes a better alternative but efforts need to be made to simply make beastmaster builds more potent. Remember, if a ranger drops his pet, he should only be compensated in damage, not utility, which causes the class to lose almost all of its real utility prowess on the field in order to kill something. If beastmasters are made more potent on the battlefield, through the means of the discussed short-term invincibility skill, through better stat modification with the BM line, better synergy with Nature Magic/support roles, etc., then a given ranger will not need to decide so much on picking the more powerful build but simply picking one which they prefer to play. Rangers are often split between either loving pets/liking to play with the pet/summon dynamic, or absolutely hating them and just wanting an archer. Making both equally viable is critical and ultimately why this divide needs to happen; both cannot exist in the same build.

That bolded part is 100% fine by me. And, I’m not in either camp of loving pets or hating them and wanting an archer. I want a petless skermishing melee Ranger.

And I believe it’s something people are mistaking when considering such a change. Having no condi clear aside from heal, no buffs, no CC, no aggro soaking, no extra effects, etc. is extremely inhibitory. Thus, all that is necessary is an increase in damage to compensate for the lost hits/RoA might stacks and the offensive bonuses which Signet of the Beastmaster provides (thus why I suggest it should be replaced with pet stowing and removed from the game as a trait), causing all remaining real utility to be forgone for the sole purpose of dealing damage. It makes both builds equally useful with some added bonuses to the BM line and potentially even more favorable for BM’s as they can revive allies/assist elsewhere while the pet fights and deals damage.

In the end all PVE/Dungeons is about is doing as much damage as you can as fast as you can while actively mitigating any damage by doding/evading. So yeah, none of that utility, unless it provides a straight damage increase, is neccessary. Only for specific situations does one need to bring utility that Rangers have and that is stability. And if you know you’re going to need more condi cleansing you run the signet… And I don’t run Signet of the Beastmaster at all because in my experience the actives on the signets are bad. I usually run QZ, condi romving signet if I need it, frost spirit, muddy terrian, and something else that is of lesser importance. I don’t run any pet aiding utilities because they can’t avoid AOE so they end up dead anyway.

RNG is a bell curve. Better hope you’re on the right side.

Wasn’t it because pets are server side and not client side or something like that why they couldn’t retain the name once you changed them?

Anyone experienced in dungeon farming with a decent understanding of the meta will know why this build isn’t good with just common sense. You don’t need to try a build to identify any problems with it.

Exactly. Thats the aspect my comments were coming from.

This is my non-dungeon suggestion for making money.

Go to: http://us.gw2stuff.com/en/

Find your world.

Do a full round of world boss events as they come up. Dragons, temples, whatever. This might take a couple hours, or just one; do as many as you can. Guest to other worlds if necessary. You can make from 3-10 gold a night doing this, particularly if you salvage your yellows for ectos and then sell those, too. Sell everything.

Or more. I was doing that one night and the legend dropped for me out of a wolf in FG. Bam. Instead 700g+ in my pocket.

The first 5 words were the most important in the OP.

I highly disagree this is the best PVE build. Not running 1 in the minor and putting 30 into that line with the spirits… No. Waste of points.

I also disagree on the 2nd hand weapon choice. SB > GS in terms of damage if you can flank and get the bleeds in.

Still interested to know what Devs roll a Ranger main and how many hours they have them.

Does Allie roll a Ranger? How many hours on it if so?

There is two devs that roll ranger, mostly in sPvP and they roll spirits.

Go visit SPVP forums, there was a thread there called “What builds does the Devs use?”

Yeah, I did, but I don’t remember if they said they main them… And, I don’t much care for sPVP. Needs of sPVP are going to be different than my needs in PVE/Dungeons… That being said I want to know if the PR person we are dealing with for this CDI knows anything about playing Ranger in any game mode… and if not, can we get someone in here like a Dev that actually plays a Ranger more than a few hours.

I think you’re missing something: it doesen’t matter if you play sPvP or not. Balancing PvP builds is the core of the game due to the fact that you have far less options to boost or balance your stats; I’ll explain better: when you create a PvP build you have very limited options since you have only amulets and runes to balance your stats (you don’t have any stat on weapons and armor, you can’t use accessories and rings) so you should be very careful to the trait lines you’re picking.
In conclusion, if a build is viable in sPvP than 90% of the times it will be viable in WvW as well (I’m not thinking about PvE since you just have to go full zerker and you’re fine with very little exeptions: the balance here should begin from a complete rework of bosses, dungeon mechanics and damages in general in order to change something).

I’m not stating that PvP is better than any other game mode, not at all, but I do think that we (both players and devs) should focus on balancing PvP because it influences the whole game. Many builds first came out in PvP and then took place in WvW as well (but not the contrary).

Sadly a lot of those PVP balancing bits have ruined a lot of things I liked about my Ranger. I’m not going to bother to go back through a list them. Anybody who has been paying attention to the notes and playing for the last year knows what I’m talking about. That being said, I’m not bring a spirit build into any PVE/Dungeon situation, ever. But that is the meta right now for Rangers, right? Or was? I don’t pay too much attention. They need 100% split so they can balance them seperately so I can stop having my playstyle on my characters infringed on in one way or another. And yes, zerker gear for PVE, but just important are the traits and if they’re getting farked over by PVP balancing something needs to be done to separate them so I can effectively run dungeons on my Ranger.
