The stated Ranger Design Philosophy scares me to death.
Ranger Design Philosophy: Please keep this in mind when posting feedback.
The Ranger is a resilient profession that excels at skirmishing by drawing from nature to support themselves as well as their allies. Alongside their pet, they have some of the best single target and sustained damage that will whittle their opponents down.I noticed they worded it very carefully to avoid mentioning bows and ranged.
Also, they seem to still be trying to find quick fixes to ranger problems, and not too fond of making core changes.
I have a bad feeling we won’t come out of this any better than before.
For the exact same reasons I’m keeping expectations extremely low… Like Aquaman v2 low. As I have said a thousand times until they put the resources into fixing the pet properly then the Ranger will never the best option for any situation. Ever. Live in your delusional world where the pet works perfectly and acts as they envisioned, but that is not the game I play in GW2. In the game I play the pet makes extremely bad moves and doesn’t think about working around red circles to get to where it needs to go.
Given the real lack of any comms in that CDI thread from Devs it really isn’t any more than just a Suggestions to Anet thread. Allie doesn’t main a Ranger… Her responses have said drip of that. 10 pages and four devs posts… It’s not a collaborative post at all. It’s just a suggestions thread. Two of the posts were actually going back and forth. The others were just “Hey. We’re busy, but we’re reading….. but that is it.” Man… if it was a sPVP or tPVP warrior thread they’d be up on that like flies on poo.
Funny that my original-not-in-format post got deleted. Had to go back and rewrite it in the format they want. So, for that, I just started reporting all the other posts that were NOT in format… because apparently thats the only way you’re supposed to be replying in that thread.
Specific Game Mode
PvE/Dungeons
Proposal Overview
Option out of Pets
Goal of Proposal
Remove the pet handicap
Proposal Functionality
By giving the option of replacing the pet with another class mechanic such as preparations it will make the Ranger more effective in the PVE/Dungeon end game. As it stand now it is a handicap to bring my Ranger into a dungeon or PVE event instead of my Warrior, Guardian, Mesmer, Thief, or Engineer.
Associated Risks
None. There is absolutely no risk associated with giving players the option to opt out of a band-aided (as stated by Lead Game Designer J. Peters in the Dec 10th CDI Ranger thread) class mechanic.
Final Thoughts
Until the resources are used to rewrite the pet AI to make it complete independent of mob AI the pet will remain a handicap. Giving the Ranger 100% dps back (instead of balancing for 100% uptime and splitting the DPS between the Ranger and Pet as it currently is) and using another non-AI dependent class mechanic is an option many thousands of Rangers would love to it. I know personally I would main my Ranger once again if I could perma-stow my pet. We who believe the Ranger could be much better without the pet should not be held back because of a band-aided mechanic and by those who want everyone to suffer with said band-aided class mechanic.

I guess so. Sucks pretty bad though.

I was in an overflow today that got well over 1200. (The bag had nothing unusual in it).
Therein lies the problem. 99.9999% of the time there will be nothing unusual in it.
The zone-wide achievements are rubbish and indicative of nothing. I completed almost all achievements without lifting a finger or even realizing what I needed to do for them. I still don’t know that for some of them, and don’t care to, because I already have them. It happened when I was just exploring and looking for rubble. I just needed to do some more escort events and some of the events that spawn at 40 minutes.
Mission accomplished, nothing learned, not planning to go back in there because it’s boring.
Congratulations. Everyone else did what was needed while you reaped the rewards doing nothing productive. Your story is anecdotal and proves nothing. The facts of the event remain.
Nothing learned? That’s your short-coming. Clearly you’re not enjoying the event and that’s your prerogative. You judge the mechanics by your achievements and not the success of the event. *I’m glad you’re not going back in because I’d like to think the people in my overflow are working together for higher rewards. *
If you take away the incentive to farm you will have very very few going back in. Thats what happened at the Scarlet INvasions.
Not CD if you like doing PVE :\
Great. Now errybody in Tyria is gonna get the fats.
Dur is right.
These changes are garbage. This is why I think they’re real. This solves nothing to make ranger viable with all other classes.
This… and I’m talking strictly from PVE/Dungeons.
Your TL:DR was too long so I didn’t read it.
I guess I remember it differently. I only got the karka queen chest once per day per toon. Now I can only get it once per day per account. I never could get it more than once per day per toon.
And as for people still zerging and not learning, I recently got my Triple Play achievement yesterday. That’s a zone-wide achievement and it means people are learning how to play properly rather than mindlessly zerging for loot. Anet doesn’t have to spell it out for us. We should have to learn the right mechanics & strategy to win.
As we found out with the Scarlet Invasions it is EQUALLY selfish of you to want those who want to zerg to instead PLAY THE WAY YOU WANT instead of how they want… but sure, we can bring those arguements back from the dead if it tickles your fancy.
I am hoping (not really but it sounds goodfor most of all a complete rework of the class mechanic… at worst I’m hoping (still sounds good) for the option to opt out of it completely for something else.
Having one in your stable ready to benefit from any changes/revamp isn’t a bad thing.
If you are enjoying it right now, play. If not, don’t.
Fully agree with Nike on this one.
Keeping expectations low, Lobo, is a good idea.
At least you cant get banned for farming other players:D
Not yet……………..
So the bags we get at 100, 300, 600, etc citizens saved don’t exist? Or the reward bags we get at the end depending on how we do?
Nope, gotta zerg for 200 bags of blade bits, quaggan tonics, and the rare blue or green!
Yup… Not to mention the luck you get from the bags… and dragonite and e. fragments and other loots. And the slaying potions… and … Well, you get the point.
From my experience if I did the Karka Queen on my Ranger twice, then I only got the main a.k.a. physical chest once per day. That is why I bring a different toon each time to get the chest each time. It has been no different than any other world boss main chest up until last patch.
Either this is a bug or a stealth nerf.
It has been reported on another thread by more than one person that on alternate accounts the main chest from defeating the Karka Queen more than within a twenty-four hour period is not appearing. This means that the Karka Queen main chest (not the two guaranteed rares) has been moved to once per day per account status instead of
once per day per toonmultiple times per day per account status.Had to fix one part of your post.
You just reworded what I said. It means exactly the samething.
The threads’s only purpose is being an inspiration for the Devs.
I wish I could live in that type of fantasy world where I believed such crazy things.
They’re going to do what they want. They are a business. Their business is to make more money. Which you would think would be keeping people playing the game, but it’s not. It’s to make more people spend more money in the gem store. You can have less players and still make more money if those less players are spending more money in the gem store.
Think about that for a minute or an hour and let the implications of that sink in..
Keep expectations low, people. Less room for disappointment that way.
Yeah, it’d help if every AA had a leap skill on the melee pets as far as their hit rate.
Totally wouldn’t jive with my Ranger or my Mesmer.

Welcome to Loot Wars 2. Enjoy your stay (and your loot).
There’s MMOs out there that haven’t absolutely nothing to do whatsoever with anything that could be considered “loot”?
Jus’ saying

- On internal servers, been playing around with a few new Ranger specs
So, you’ve obviously seen the need to replace pets with something more functional like perma-stow-to-buff or preparations from GW1 and return 100% dps to the Ranger, right? You’ve also obviously seen the need to keybind the active/passive command, right? RIGHT? RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT????
Since that last patch that addressed the tab targeting, it has been working for me to a satisfactory level. Of course, that is in compairison to pre-last patch tab targeting. I find I can actually use it now and it is working as I expect to work. For instance with the new LS when a champ pops up and I see a champ and I’m within AA range, I hit tab I have yet to see it fail in targeting the champ first. This is especially easy when I’m playing 1500 LB Ranger and champ farming. I also have not played GW1 so I can’t compare. Now, when I just hit a skill and it auto-targets for me sometimes it is hit or miss. Not sure why. Sometimes it’ll target the highest level creature within range, sometimes it’ll target just the closest target. Not sure why, but when I hit tab it auto goes to the highest level creature closest to me. YMMV.
Didn’t use to auto target when you hit a skill to the closest creature to your cursor or something like that? I’m not sure but I think I remember noticing that at some point or it could just be a false memory.
Shouldn’t the topic of this thread be, “What the PVP side of Guild Wars 2 Needs!”? Yes. Yes it should… Would have saved me from clicking into it, but now that I am here I’m posting in it because I’m sitting in a cubical on the sixth floor of an office building near downtown.
Pretty much. I think they were expecting to get Warrior’s or Engi’s or Ele’s.

Ranger:
Ranger pets are receiving a responsiveness pass and will be much easier to command. For example: Activating your F2 skill will now break your pet out of its current action in order to execute that ability.whether they specifically reference this thread/other threads or not, the influence was obviously felt, since this has long been a complaint from many, many, many posters in these forums.
Cool. Once they get that done they can give me a keybind for active/guard. I’m still mistified on how this has not been implemented… “OH NO!! Using F1-F5!? TOO MANY BUTTONS FOR NOOBS!” So, we are stuck with having to mouse that button. I play with a Nostromo and Naga and keybinding that wouldn’t be an issue for me and I think I’m far from the only person using products such as these that would have the ability to keybind active/passive control on the pet… Then again it might go back to that Dev who said during a STOG interview they don’t want us to have more control over the pet because it’d scare away the ’tardds from the Ranger.
Sad sad news.
Why give me less reasons to run my alts???
!!!
Seriously!?
Big chest only once per account per day!? Egads! Well, I’ll test it once for myself but if I do it with two toons and don’t get the big main chest with the 3 exotic champ bags on the 2nd toon, then yeah… I’ll do it once and that’s it.
Just one more reason not to run alts and less reason to play this game. GG, Anet.

In Escape from LA, farming til fail is less rewarding than smart zone-wide play and citizen saving.
No. It isn’t. That’s why we’re still zerging. If it was more rewarding to smart-zone wide play than zerging, then guess what, that’s what everybody would be doing. Like I’ve said from personal experience it just ain’t worth it not to zerg. Until that changes, then don’t expect us not to zerg.
Turn off map chat. Problem solved.
I tried to convince people, that zerging is counter-productive when it comes to saving citizens, but most just cared for simple loot. Unfortunately I did not have any arguments against that, because encouraging citizens does not give you rewards right away (neither loot nor experience). Kind of proves once again that most people are selfish.
You say that like it is a bad thing. It’s not. It’s natural. Greed is a natural emotion. Get over it. If you can’t get past this, that is your personal problem and no one elses.
I paid for this game same as many. I’m playing how I want. Don’t like it? Tough poo. If I just want to tag and not save citizens, that’s my prime directive and if you don’t like it, well, sucks to be you. Nothing to stop you from trying to save as many as you want. I’m certainly not trying to convince you that you need to stop trying to save citizens and just tag so why are you trying to stop me from what I want to do? That ain’t right, son. I honestly don’t care how many citizens are saved because the loots for that aren’t worth the effort… And I really really wish they would have been more Jubilee or Scarlet pre-champ nerf Invasion type zerging instead of this watered down version. The loots just aren’t as good… but still better than wasting time trying to save citizens.
They should give more rewards for saving citizens.
This.
I looked at the rewards for saving the citizens and no. The absolute 0.000% chance to get an ascended something or something from an old LS story (since I participated in LS and got what I wanted already and I’m not doing ascended gear treadmill) is not enough to stop me from just wanting to tag as much as possible for the most loots. My first run I nailed over 250 bags. 2nd run over 200. Not to mention the decent loot from tagging. Why should I take the time to do something else that has less reward?
Enough with the zergs already...

So I went and read the patch notes… and that 1500 reward chest doesn’t sound awesome. I’d rather rely on my own personal RNG from the many mobs than one single chest. The extremely miniscule chance of ascended materials or drop from previous LS event is mostly likely on the same % as a ascended chest from any other world boss chest, dungeon end chest, or the like. In which case I will do those for the same drop rate. This LS will be for the AP and that is it. There aren’t enough champs to keep farming zergers to come back. That’s for sure. It’s no jubilee or pre-champ nerf scarlet invasion by any means. All the people in my guild taht I know of participating are doing it for the AP and will not go back once they are done since the loot just isn’t good enough (except for one guy out of 50).

Personally I don’t res fully defeated players. I try to kill what is still so the multiples that are just down and revive from that one thing being killed. Much more efficient way to res.
If I go defeated I don’t wait for people to res me. I wp no matter how far it is. I’m not a bad. I can make it back. I’m not going to ask selfishly ask others to res my defeated corpse most probably taking them down in the process.
So besides from forum lurking, i do not pay much attention to the state of the game anymore.
I wouldn’t be on this forum much either except my other forums are blocked on the company intrawebs
If the CDI starts on Friday you guys will probably have about 12 pages worth of suggestions to talk through. Better make this a long one.
Nothing to worry about. Starting monday.
Didn’t even bother reading the OP’s wall of text. Wouldn’t have read the TL:DR either because of the simple fact that the pet is a band-aided to work class mechanikittenil the class mecahnic is tore down and completely built independant of mob AI there is nothing you can do to fix it through tweaks. The only true fix is to give an option out of it by perma-stow-buffing or something similar that transfers 100% damage output to the Ranger since the Ranger is balance around the pet being up 100% of the time doing dps 100% of the time.
So, this is PVP?
wvw
So yeah, PVP then just not t/sPVP.
So, this is PVP?
But I did hop into AC after a long break from the game and wondered why people were hiding behind the pillar at the stairs near the Spider Queen.
Good news. There are people who want to do what you do, and they’ve even made a thread so they can find each other easier. You should join them.

About time! Been telling those people to find like minded people for over a year now! Finally… Maybe now some of the QQ’ing will subside… but hey, who am I kidding?
Sucks to be ignorant new guy who can’t read the oh so obvious LFG tool descriptions.
It says in the tool descriptions… “If you do not know what you’re doing, you will be left behind to die.”? I’ve never read it nor am I the “New Guy” I’m referring to. But I did hop into AC after a long break from the game and wondered why people were hiding behind the pillar at the stairs near the Spider Queen. I was ready to go in there and actually fight.
So, what did the LFG description say
And then I was right: sucks to be the new guy, which you were for all intensive purposes, in that AC run.
Somebody link this person to Brazil’s semi-old zerker build… gw2skills.net is blocked so can’t tell if it is there or not.
Learn to dodge and go full zerker for PVE and Dungeons.
nope, no permastow. need to be able to have a petless build…that would fix everything.
Not everything, but it would be a great improvement anyway.
True, not everything but 99% of the problems is close enough to everything for me
Because winning in a duel means class balance.
Apparently.
I knew of an extremely small niche group that says the Ranger is broken… The extremely large vast majority hates the pets, not the Ranger.
I’d be cool with staff if it were a healing based weapon, personally… I’m sure a lot of people would disagree but considering our lack of condition removal, something like… 2 of the 5 skills heal/remove one condition on yourself and allies while the other 3 inflict damage while healing. It would be more of a passive/support weapon to reduce our weakness to condition stacking. What if it cast it’s own version of Healing Spring even? It would make us much more of an asset in groups by being able to throw down AOE heals with either most of, or all 5 of our staff skills.
If it was a healing based weapon I would never use it unless the auto-attack was exactly like the guardian auto-attack… then I would use it exclusively for tagging with axe+torch.
