I don’t know. I’d have to be numerically inferior in every way or unable to complete content with my class.
Though certain playstyles or mechanics were altered in the patch, and maybe a few bugs were introduced, I don’t feel like I’m underperforming or lacking value.
Last night I ran exploration mode dungeons, soloed some difficult PvE enemies and events, and contributed meaningfully to some WvW sieges. I did this as a mesmer in probably one of our weaker specs (condition damage). None of my team members complained about my performance and I never felt like I was a weak link.
I think mesmers remain a viable, durable, and complex class with a high skill cap and a varied set of useful playstyles.
There are bugs, but there are bugs with every profession and we don’t seem particularly inflicted compared with some of the others.
after the patch, a condition damage staff spec is the ONLY spec mesmers are good at now.
basically every mesmer that was built for direct damage shatter/burst with GS now has to invest 20g+ in a completely new set of gear.
not a good time to start using GS. stick to staff, you’re better off.
The change makes sense. If you dodge an attack, it doesn’t spawn an illusion. I’m not sure why there’s such an outrage.
Shatter builds arent really affected with this change simply because dodging and other utilites create clones anyways. Lots of times my shatters were on cooldown so clones were blowing up due to recycling.
I’m not too worried about this change.
no, if you dodge an attack, you should dodge the attack the illusion attacks you with. not dodge the illusion entirely.
here’s a suggestion, read the class forums, and post feedback when appropriate.
i really hope someone is watching the mesmer section for feedback closely after this patch.

they also need to fix how extremely buggy uneven terrain is for ranged attacks and LoS. i’m sure this complaint extends to other ranged classes, but over half of mesmers skills (illusion summoning skills) flat out don’t work if you try to cast it on someone that isn’t standing in the same plane as you.
this patch has made all the things wrong and unfixed about mesmers since release day that much more apparent, by limiting viable mesmer builds even further.
GS direct damage build is out
mantra build is counter-intuitive and counter-game design, don’t use half your given skills because you can do more damage that way.. what?
scepter #1 skill is a joke, and #3 is unreliable
so what are we left with, no ranged options except for a condition damage build centered around staff.
oh and sword/sword/pistol/focus build, where we have to put ourselves into melee range to do ANYTHING as a light class.
yeah i’m kittening heated, this is kittening ridiculous.
another extremely aggrevating thing is that when other classes get nerfs, its always a change in the numbers, such and such skill now deals 15% less damage, or has reduced duration, or something along those lines.
this patch is, nerf mesmer, CHANGE THE WAY THE CORE MECHANIC WORKS ENTIRELY.

anet needs so stop making new content for like a month, and just dedicate themselves to just fixing all the kittening bugs with mesmers as well as many other classes. many of these bugs are game breaking, and has been around since launch.
there is absolutely no excuse.
in terms of WvW and pve, this is the most poorly thought out, over the top, completely kitten ‘balance’ patch this game has ever seen. does the team that decided this was in anyway balanced even play this game? there is no serious WvW non-condition damage build mesmer would think this is a fair balance patch.
what sort of balance patch forces you to make the decision of, do a fraction of your original damage, or invest 20-30 gold to buy all new gear/jewels/runes/etc. its just so poorly thought out.
if arenanet doesn’t revert or rebalance things, i would atleast like to hear some sort of rational for this decision from the game design team. and for once, have a dev post some insightful posts in the mesmer forums.
there is no viable direct damage builds now for mesmers in wvw. you can argue that sword/x combo is direct damage, but it’s melee, drastically reducing your survivability.
i’d be ok with this change if i didn’t have to spend 30g to completely buy new condition damage armor instead of berserker gear.
Ok, so, at least in my guild our major priority in WvW when attacking a keep was to try to remove defensive siege. The best way to do this? Well, the only way. Have mesmers cast phantasms over the gate to attack the people on the catapult.
Now that this is no longer an option, how exactly does anet intend for us to destroy defensive siege that is hidden behind a wall? Unless Anet makes catapults not do damage through objects, this is EXTREMELY broken.
you build catapults instead of rams. they should just remove rams from the game.
Yes, that is a viable strategy, but then what is wrong with building rams? You seem to say that rams are in some way broken.. Please do explain how they are either broken, or overpowered. They are close range, melee siege devices that do more damage than the long ranged…?
they are broken in the sense that you can’t stop the catapult from hitting you through the gate. i’m agreeing with you that it’s kitten that anet nerfed berserker without giving some other way of attacking in return, when mesmers have no other options.

I know, although it actually isn’t impossible to conjure LOS requiring Phantasms on walls: I’ve managed to cast Warden up there many times, dealing AoE damage and watching fools shoot themselves. It does fail sometimes for no apparent reason (as sometimes you can’t tell if someone is in LOS of your character or not), but it is far from impossible.
you managed to summon warden up there because they were standing on the little lip at the edge, in which case anything could hit them.

50% crit chance, 100% crit damage, 3.3-4k attack.
pre patch, berserker would spin for 3-7k, and if you shattered right away and crit, you do another 3-6k instantly.
damage ranges are against tough targets, on the low end, and glass cannon/upscaled targets on the high end.
the blind nerf is fine, just autoattack once before summoning.
however dodge rolling also obstructing the summon is completely kitten before, it would summon but the first attack made by the phantasm would get evaded, which makes sense, this atleast gives you an illusion to shatter, or hope it stays alive to make a second attack. but now you’re taking away half your illusion generation skills, the core mechanic of the class.
they should increase mind stab aoe to meteor shower aoe size(obey 5 target limit rule). that way it can be positioned to hit the same thing any ground target aoe can hit on keep walls.
LOL not like a sensible compromise to our seiging abilities like that will ever happen.
i really like how anet lists EVERY phantasm in the LOS fix, to mask the fact that the change only affects ONE phantasm, the berserker.

I’m sometimes spec’d 30 points in illusion, taking the trait that puts all shatters on you. if I get jumped by a thief, I hit F1 through F4 (if I wasn’t panicking so much, I’d not hit the stun). This puts distortion on you, long enough to react, at least, or get out of the stun, it also does initial damage, which they aren’t expecting, and puts 5 stacks of confusion on them because every shatter causes confusion. 5 stacks of confusion on a hasted thief makes them kill them self quickly. I’ve insta-killed more than a few face-roller thieves just using this, without any illusions out this way. The self-shatter stuff is also good for pinging out people who are hiding.
thats not how that trait works, it only makes yourself shatter 1x, not put all the illusions shatter effects on you. so if you shatter with no illusions out, it will only shatter once. the max you can get is a 4x shatter with 3 illusions out.
if you’re going glass cannon vs glass cannon,
if the thief gets the jump on you, the only thing that will save you from being downed is quick reactions, whether it be blurred frenzy, distortion, stealth, blink, etc.
if you get the jump on the thief, they die instantly as well. shatters still hit them in stealth
These hackers are pissing me off… Just tonight I saw 3, possibly 4 of them (only got 1 clearly on fraps due to late recording). It’s all the tele-move hacks that bots were using before too. 1 of them, maybe 2 (2nd was inconclusive) even did it while downed.
Not even sure what to report them for, I choose botting… I’m also not sure if it’s acceptable by forum rules to post a link to my video which does show 2 account names (from the report interface).
Not generalizing to the rest of the server but those 3 or 4 were EBay. If you guys see any from Maguuma hacking do us all a favor and report those ……….s as well.

can you send me a forum pm with the link? i’ve never seen one of these hackers, i want to know what it looks like so i know what to look out for.
mantra are probably viable in pve, since a 25% extra damage is only extra damage if you’re doing consistent damage. however in pvp, where battles can be over in split seconds, you usually won’t have the chance to output your extra damage.
especially when that extra damage is reliant on you not using half your skill slots, like your utilities and shatters.
Didn’t seem negative to me at all, but maybe I am reading it wrong.
its not negative, his post was his rational as to why emary bay seem to win more smaller skirmishes, and megarma wins more strategic fights.
this is in response to ralathars claim that mery bay has more individual skill, since individual skill becomes more apparent the smaller scale the fight. and if people gear more specifically for small fights, then of course they’re going to win more often then not.
i myself is geared for super burst damage, and tend to stay away from huge zergs, and in my observation i could say the same, that emery bay i fight get 1-shotted all the time, but that doesn’t mean im more skillful, just means i’m better equiped for the fight.
Although one thing that has been bugging me: after a tough or close fight, I always /salute or /bow to my opponent… however, I’ve seen the most /laughing, /dancing, or /sitting from enemies this match than ever before…

I’m all for the clones doing 50% of the player’s damage.
It will at least make them useful in PvE.
they are useful in pve, they apply conditions.

Edit: Just another thought. You get 1-2 badges per bag/kill if it drop’s correct? So that means the odds of me not having one badge after 30 kills must be really rare?
extremely rare. i get bags about every other kill.
Got to love Maguumas immense kittenyness. Let me know when you step outside your fully fortified keeps/towers and I’ll glady accept free badges.

mass invisibility is a great initiation tool. plus not many know, but you can seem to use skills in stealth as long as its not your #1 skill in stealth and you wont be unstealthed.
Ok so they have explained wvw rankings. So how do you get those scores? We all understand PPT and we also all know there a lot more points to get/lose besides the ones listed. Ive heard some guilds have figured it out but are not telling.
What is the exact formula?
player kills 1?
flags 1?
Yak escort 3?
yak murder 1?
Champions killed 5? (guild claimers or events)
Vet events killed 1?
Anything else? My values are of course pure speculation. Some say all can scale, as in it would be 1point per 2 people escorting yaks up to 3 max for example. I’m just tired of the mystery. Tell me please.
none of those things contribute to score. your score is completely determined by potential points, which are tallied after every interval. these are holding camps, towers, keeps, and stonemist.
remove karma in WvW and make a new currency which is used for WvW equipment and WvW Ranks. For WvW Ranks make title and awesome Armor

are you testing it on environmental targets (yellow ones)? those are immune to crits and conditions.
The rest should work.As I said, I haven’t used it in a while, but I don’t ever recall causing more than 2 bleed stacks at a time. With a GS you attack thrice on a second. With 72% crit, it’d make 15 attacks per 5s including 10 crits.
Therefore I understand adding a small cooldown, but they could’ve listed it in the description.
i’ve tested on target golems and dummy class npcs in heart of mists, which are affected by conditions, sigil procs for sword and any other weapon, just not GS.
and you can certainly have more than 2 stacks at a time, even with sword, i’ve been lucky before and have gotten 3 stacks back to back. and sword swings MUCH slower than GS attacks. so if there is a cooldown, i dont think its as long as you think.
why the hell doesn’t it work for me? i can shoot it all day long, and it will never bleed EVER. i’ve tried like every trait possible and even no traits. IT DOESNT WORK.
and if there is a hidden cooldown, its definately not that long, i’ve had it proc back to back on sword swings, which are at the most 1s inbetween attacks.
also the actual chance of bleed proc per attack is 0.5*0.6 assuming 50% crit rate. which is 30%. so every volley of autoattacks you expect an average of 1 stack. and since every stack lasts 5 seconds, you’d only be able to get off 3-4 attacks during that time. so you expect an average of 3-4 stacks at a time.
nothing has changed to how this sigil or GS worked since the GS buff months ago. so i odnt see how people are getting less stacks, maybe its in their heads. or they tried it with clones out or something, with bleed trait on.
but regardless, can anyone figure out why it doesnt work for me?
The site is weird. If you scroll to the bottom that gives a list of the current scores and income with the times they were taken, that is definitely CET. The graphs start at 8pm for me and not 5pm or 1am. I guess it adjusts based on where the user accesses the site from. But the matches no longer start 8pm/5pm EST/PST. They are an hour earlier now because of DST adjustment. Why does telling time have to be so difficult lol.
the site lists every matchup starts at 1700 for me, however it doesn’t include daylight savings. so you just have to move times back 1 hr. so emerybay was first overtaken from 8-10am, then again from 7pm-1am. that makes my point even clearer actually.
edit: the site lists it starts at 8pm for you because you’re east coast, so it does detect your time zone and displays the time it starts for you.

I use that site a lot and it seems the time they use is CET. It is a French site after all. So they are 6 hours ahead EST. Maguuma started to lead in potential points at 6am EST which is still not night capping meaning Ehmry led at night. That said, I doubt many North Americans woke up at 6am to play GW2. Most likely candidates are the Europeans. Does Maguuma have any European guilds?
Ehmry is going to be shocked by Dragonbrand. Their comebacks due to dominating off peak hours have been amazing.
no, their time scale is using PST. you can see it starts at 5pm on the 9th.
emery bay was over taken between 9-11am saturday morning. then it seems the many of their players gave up, instead of retaking the map. emergy bay slowly started retaking everything throughout the day, however from 8pm to 2am lost everything. that’s hardly night capping by magerna, infact that’s primetime for US players.
i feel sorry for those guilds on emery bay that are still trying, seems like half your server have such a defeatist attitude.

All I do is wvw so I’ll never have that other stuff. Homey don’t grind. Homeys been there and done that and is gonna pass this time around. Badges is as good as it’s going to get for me. I bought this game to pvp, nothing more.
so you’re given the option to get better gear, for less amount of work and time, but you refuse to do it.
thats completely fine, but you lose the right to complain about how hard it is to get badges, when its not hard at all, especially if all you do is wvw.
i leveled from 1-80 from playing pve, maybe 1-2 levels were gained from wvw. and during that time, i acquired enough gold in form of mats and event rewards to buy a full level 80 exotic set. no farming was needed. infact if you dont wanted, you can get exotic karma gear too, there are many viable karma sets to use. sounds like you need to do some research before coming here to complain how one out of the many ways to get gear is too hard.

It is a lot of badges. I’m on the fence about the drop rates. Agreed they can be hard to get in all aspects of the game other tahn direct player killing.
Just not sure if I want to see everyone running around in max gear so soon after the games release.
As is it is just aggravating the situation. Thieves and mesmers raking badges thus making them EVEN MORE over powered is not helping the game. PvP’ers by nature are competitive. They will roll whatever class gives them the edge. i.e. thieves and mesmers. Heck-I shelved a 74 engineer and rerolled an ele (cant bring my self to play faceroll classes). The think is, my engineer is way more valuable in a group with his support than my ele is with his dps but my engineer hardly ever gets badges while my ele rakes. I want to be competitive and getting badges is not optional. You HAVE to get badges to get the gear (all about skill my kitten . So what are you gonna do?
thieves and mesmers dont go for wvw gear. atleast not the good ones. infact only very specific builds for certain classes will find wvw gear useful.
saying you have to get wvw gear to be competitive is ridiculous.
1113 badges out of 6153 kills. the ratio seems legit, but i have to say sometimes u get 2 badges from 1 kill.
I don’t know. Must be the ANET “mystery” ratio. It goes right along with the Mystic Forge.
my ratios more like 1:3, about 4200 kills, and 1800 badges, but some are from jumping puzzle.
I have a feeling its a weird conflict with a trait somehow.
Try changing traits and test again.
tried changing all my major traits, no difference, then tried changing all minor traits as well, by resetting to no traits, doesnt work. then tried different set of traits in different trees, doesnt work.
what traits are the people that DO have this working use?
What are you trying it against? I tested a few days back on a GS and in the mists and it was working.
just tested it on target golems just now, no bleeds on GS. tried it on the class npc’s too, no bleeds.
works with other weapons however

use staff as main weapon. helps tremendously in surviving.
all this arguement about winning by nightcapping is senseless. every server is going to have times where they are weak and strong. you just need to take advantage of it.
how did magerma narrowly win against dragonbrand last week when all they did was night cap magermer and darkhaven? by winning the map at all the other times. something emergy bay players can’t seem to understand. just because a server has a stronger night capping team doesn’t automatically mean a lose, it just means you have to fight harder during the other times.

There is nothing awesome about a match decided by night capping. Another night of this and we will have a dead match score wise for a whole week. A bit disappointing
does the rest of emery bay share this guys attitude? i mean you claim as a server that you don’t give up, but it sounds like this guy and his guild already has, even after destroying magerma and holding 3/4th of the map at reset for the entire evening.
I don’t understand why some Maguuma users feel the need to open the thread this week by insinuating that EB was doing well in the early onset due to transfers instead of through busting the attempt to turtle.
I also don’t understand the constant need of some Maguuma users to play the victim. When you were losing, it was because EB was hacking in the past, exploiting, or transfers saving the day. When you are winning, everyone other than you is a horrible crybaby and anyone who speaks against you is just a hater, whining, or “trashing.” Either way, you’re the “good” and everyone else is “bad.”
people were saying that emery bay got ahead because of transfers is because the last time mag and ebay fought, they were a no-show, much like ET is now. how that ebay can field players in primetime, its no surprise you get claims like this.
and magerma isnt playing the victim, hack accusations were only brought up by emery bay referencing previous match ups by multiple people from emery bay, even when you were winning.
emery bay is by far the server with the worst sportsmanship i’ve ever seen. insulting players that have nothing but compliments to give for improving so much. i can’t believe the amount of whining and excuses that are brought up, even when were ahead.

Personally, I think anything you can do to help your server’s campaign should have a chance to reward badges. I believe that any events from keep sieges to DE PvE-ish events like the Centaurs/Skitts/Hyleks/Kraitt, etc. should reward badges.
When you think about, the amount of time it takes to get a full set of PvP gear based off of the current badge drop rate vs. the PvE exact-stat equvilent in Ascalonian Catacombs, the PvE way seems substantially quicker than trying to grind badges.
Personally, I have no idea why they have W3 rewards based off of PvP kills only. It makes no sense when put into the W3 (anything for the greater good of the realm) mentality.
the AC set is level ~30, badge set is exotic 80
and 600-900 kills isnt alot, it counts assists as well, you get loot bags for assists as much as you get kills. you can get 1-200 kills in just a couple hours of playing
to get 38 badges, you would have probably had to kill 200 players.
