for nvidia users only:
if you want to properly limit your framerate at 30, go to the nvidia control panel —> “manage 3D settings” —> scroll all the way down to “vertycal sync” and turn it to “adaptive (half refresh rate)”.
make sure that vsync is also enabled in-game.
if you want to limit it at 60, do the same as above, but instead simply select “on” instead of “adaptive (half refresh-rate)” at the nvidia-cp
don’t know if AMD’s also got adaptive v-sync options, but there is a way to limit it at 30 at the cp too…don’t know how tho.
“Only the finest of potatoes in my zerkburgers.”
as Rampage said, turn it off, unless you’re doing high performance videoediting or laser shows.
with HT off, your CPU produces less heat and may save you up to 0,5v too.
in other words: more OC potential.

no.
does OP’s post proofs anything?
no.
would a game really have a non-existent value into it without having a bunch of code/programming-pros noticing it for almost half of a year?
hell no.
ít’s all about luck…some have it some don’t.
i salvaged 25 lv80 rares with a master-kit – 3 ectos…

“Only the finest of potatoes in my zerkburgers.”
let the game decide your graphic options (should set everything to “high”), set reflections to “terrain&sky” or “none” manually (it’s bugged), vsync on and apply the tweaks on the following thread (CLICK), you’ll most likely get the following:
PvE: 55~60FPS / 50~55FPS on crowded DE’s
LA: 45~55FPS (very area specific)
WvW: 55~60FPS outside of massive fights / 25~30FPS at massive fights aka zerg battles
which would be pretty much the maximum of what you can get at the moment, no matter of how good your PC is.
i’m just guessing, your actual FPS might be lower – in that case, overclock your CPU if you’re not satisfied with the performance (get some basic overclocking knowledge first and search an OC tutorial specific to your CPU model/series and be sure that you are actually know what you are doing! you may damage your CPU!)
“Only the finest of potatoes in my zerkburgers.”
your CPU will definately bottleneck your GPU and you will most likely not get much more out other than a higher display quality.
also, if your mainboard got an older type of PCIe slot, your desired graphics card won’t even be able to pull of much of it’s capabilitys
you should also upgrade your CPU as well, if you have the money.
don’t bother asking for any advice what to buy…soon, this thread will be flooded with all kinds of people telling “buy this and this and this and that to play GW2 properly”
the general choice of a gamer would be a gtx660ti + intel i7-3770k + any good asus socket 1155 mobo designed for overclocking.
but it really depends on what you wanna spend and at which rate of quality/performance you would be satisfied with.
if you are shorter on money, more into AMD in general or more experienced with AMD, stick with AMD chips, similiar in performance.
if you’re not experienced in building your own PC, make sure to check out your nearest, trusted local PC store and ask for assistance there in addition to the advices you will get on the internet

a 502 error can be a problem with your firend’s ISP, his network settings, browser settings, background programs which interfere with your network or simply arena-net’s server having problems.
your friend should make sure NOT to use a proxy server.
he also should emptying his browser cache, deleting website cookies, trying out different web-browsers and disabling all browser plugins temporarily.
if that’s not helpful, he should contacting his ISP.
my ISP had connectivity problems especially with the GW2 servers during the first month’s since it’s release.
i hope your friend will join asap

it would take 6 billion years for my GW2 account, 377 billion years for my e-mail and 345 quintillion years for my steam account for the brute force method of an average PC to hack me.
septillions can be easely achieved when adding symbols.i should be safe for a while

Security isn’t a thing, it’s a process. Doesn’t matter how strong your password is if you don’t know how to protect it.
what are the odds that they’ll find out which services and usernames those passwords do belong to if they WOULD save it?
not to mention that you don’t have to press “enter” when punching in any letters there…
btw…why do people write down passwords in the first place?
if i ever have to choose and remember a REALLY lengthy password, like my routers one (63 randomly mashed keys), i photoshop a randomly chosen *.mp3 file stored at any portable media device (USB stick, mp3-player, phone).

nice move, gw2lfg.
“Only the finest of potatoes in my zerkburgers.”
in case that you’re using win7 or vista, you can force it to run at 640×480p at the compatibility mode options.
but as far as i know, the only way to do it is to change the screen resolution to 800×600p at your nvidia-cp or windows resolution menu (rightclick on your dekstop wallpaper) and then set it ingame to “windowed fullscreen” .
“Only the finest of potatoes in my zerkburgers.”
well, this game got an action-oriented style of gameplay, so dodging as many hits as you can (except fighting 1on1 against most regular PvE enemies) is mandatory, no matter what you’re rolling.

depending on your skill, taste and style of gameplay, you can go pretty much with any “build” in this game (except some dungeons) without a gamebreaking impact.
most people seem to be ok with the current diversity, tho if a-net want to keep their “hardcore” playerbase, they won’t come around tweaking and balancing here and there.

first, use different temperature displaying tools like RealTemp and CoreTemp, because just one isn’t accurate enough.
SpeedFan gives me 59°C, RealTemp 44°C and CoreTemp 32°C at idle states for instance.
then determine which one of those temps are the most accurate ones, (easy if everyone will show the same results) by looking at other laptops using the same CPU model. (google FTW)
temp-monitoring still could be completely wrong tho, depending on your system.
well just try out CoreTemp and see what it says…it’s my favorite :P
in case your temps are actually really high, try lowering the clock speed at the BIOS (it requires overclocking knowledge, so don’t do it or gather information about overclocking – it can be dangerous if you don’t know what you’re messing with!)
laptops generally heat up alot during longer sessions.
different powersaving settings and lowering graphic options might help reduce such heat ups, but at the cost of quality and performance.
“Only the finest of potatoes in my zerkburgers.”
i do /map or gw2lfg to find groups.
without any luck…and if i finally found one, i get yelled at for watching cutscenes, so i gave up on dungeons a long time ago :P
but dungeons aren’t designed for PUGs in the first place.
they are tested on tuned groups and are meant for a specific mix of professions/builds, which i don’t like.
sure, they are possible and can be still easy with PUGs, but that requires skill i can’t test because i can’t find groups…argh.

40+FPS in WvWvW sounds unlikely even if you are using a NASA computer…
if you GTX550ti isn’t already factory overclocked, get yourself some knowledge from tutorials all over the internet on how to overclock it (really, make yourself sure on what you’re doing before attempting any overclock!)…you should get around 8-10% more performance out of it that way.
my advice: be patient, wait for optimisations, turn off reflections and lower your shadow settings ingame and mess about at the nvidia-cp.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/tech/FPS-and-Performance-based-issues-1
maybe you wanna try out different driver versions…some may perform better some may not.
except you’re really wanna spend money on new hardware because of one game…if you’re satisfied with your system’s performance at other games/tasks, don’t bother with upgrading your hardware any further.
“Only the finest of potatoes in my zerkburgers.”
it’s normal. don’t know if it’s intended or not though.
for nvidia users:
turn on vsync and turn off the framelimiter ingame.
go to the nvidia cp, “manage 3D settings”, go to vsync and choose “adaptive (half refresh rate)” for 30FPS and simply to “on”, if you’re aiming for 60.
“Only the finest of potatoes in my zerkburgers.”
try resetting your video card’s settings to their defaults at it card’s control panel.
if you’d like to reinstall/update your driver, check out this thread:

“Only the finest of potatoes in my zerkburgers.”
depends on what you want to do with your PC other than just playing GW2.
i feel like most people here just get a new PC/hardware simply because of GW2…
and unless you’re an enthusiast, i see no reason to go high-end just for the purpose of playing games, especially because if you’re patient enough, you will be able to run GW2 just fine on “not-so-good” PC’s in the future, because this game will get it’s performance optimisations sooner or later.
i don’t know anything about ATI cards, so the best nvidia card, in terms of price/performance, would be a GTX660ti or a GTX650ti, if you are not willing to spend that much.
additionally, look up some other system’s reviews using such cards around the internet and compare their benchmarks, to get a feeling of which CPU/GPU/mobo combo would suit you best.
you could try overclocking your GPU first (make sure that you know what you’re doing!), to get more out of your card…maybe you’ll be just satisfied with that result.
“Only the finest of potatoes in my zerkburgers.”
(edited by wauwi.9162)
i’m assuming, that you are using a nvidia card.
disable “ambient occlussion” at the nvidia-cp.
“Only the finest of potatoes in my zerkburgers.”
if considering the naked numbers like CPU and GPU frequencies for instance, OP’s desired desktop PC is pretty similiar to mine.
and GW2 runs @60FPS during most of PvE, @55FPS at LA and 40FPS @WvWvW on high settings with reflections set to “terrain&sky”.
now, i can even turn the texture filtering quality back to “quality” since the latest driver update at my nvidia-cp without loosing 5~8FPS
some areas which causes bad framerate drops had been fixed and optimized too recently.
so im sure that at least ~50FPS is completely possible on high settings.
then do some tweaking, a little bit here and there, and it performs great unless GW2.exe is bottlenecking (oh gawd i just said the bad “b” word -_-)
DE’s can’t be compared to WvWvW…those are two completely different dimensions.
maybe your server is just THAT crowded…
sure, nobody can exactly tell how a system will perform the first time turning it on, until you plug it in, press the power button and do some PC stuff with it
“Only the finest of potatoes in my zerkburgers.”
the ghost of Guild Wars 2 is haunting your PC O.O
nah, just kidding.
are you sure that you’ve installed GW2 within c:\? check other drives too if you got any.
or maybe you accidentally hid the folder?
to be able to see invisible/hidden folders/files, go to start —-> folder options —-> view and locate “show hidden files, folders and drives” and check it, then apply and search for GW2 again
in case you found it, just delete the whole Guild Wars 2 folder and delete all reg-entries with “RegCleaner”, an old yet still helpful little tool which finds registry entries and orders them by program-name/publisher-name, so just start it, locate the entry “Arena-Net / Guild Wars 2” and delete it.
RegCleaner also makes backups everytime you change something, so you’re on the safe side.
“Only the finest of potatoes in my zerkburgers.”
That’s not entirely true. I mean I jump into melee range quite often on the majority of bosses in this game, and so do some of my guild members.
so do i (playing ranger).
that’s why i’m playing GW2…i’m not just have to sit there like a rock pressing “1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, repeat until mob is dead” like in any previous tab-through mmo i’ve played.
“Only the finest of potatoes in my zerkburgers.”
go to "start" ---> "control panel" ---> "programs and features"
search for the Guild Wars 2 entry and click "uninstall"
all it does tho, is just delete the whole GW2 folder (usually located at "C:\Guild Wars 2") and 3 registry entries which are only serving the purpose of the uninstaller finding the installed path, as well as Guild Wars 2 showing up at the "programs and features" window.
afaik, all you would have to do manually would be deleting the GW2 folder located at "my documents", where all your ingame settings and infos are stored.
“Only the finest of potatoes in my zerkburgers.”
your graphic glitches up ONLY in orr? nowhere else?
because that would sound more like corrupted game files to me.
“Only the finest of potatoes in my zerkburgers.”
well it’s a laptop…so barely any OC potential…except if you want your laptop catching fire :P
but an i7 @2,4Ghz…i just googled it and it appears to have a max turbo frequency @3,5Ghz…if the stuttering are that frequent and not just only when moving the camera, maybe it’scaused by fluctuating clock speeds?
so if you’re experienced in overclocking, you might wanna try out OC it to something like 3,1Ghz and disabling speed-step, so that it’s clocks remain constant.
there might be some tweaking-potential at your graphic card’s control panel…i’m not familiar with AMDs so…but you might wanna try out lowering the quality at your graphic card’s control panel and idk you and all AMD graphic card users might want to check this thread out: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players/Get-rid-of-your-low-FPS-AMD-only-Advanced-Method
again, if it’s just stuttering here and then, don’t mind it
also, framerates can be VERY area specific, which the developers continuously looking into.
example:
i’m running around at 60FPS at gendarran fields, teleporting into the norn starterting area – getting 45FPS, teleporting back to queensdale – getting 60FPS, walking into a cave at queensdale – getting 30FPS (they fixed that passage during the jan 28th update), walking out of that cave – 60 again
you can keep any bad grammar you find any…i’m kinda tired right now :P
“Only the finest of potatoes in my zerkburgers.”

help naming an asura toon? i highly doubt that they’ll even think about helping someone with that.
i guess they helped because the character already existed and it’s name was too offensive.
or it was just some staff member who felt like answering that…it’s not forbidden for them to do that :P
believe it or not, GW2 is a rare exception in terms of performance in the world of videogames…thanks to the reflection-bug and general bad optimisation here and there, which can cause huge framedrops even on high-end systems.
i created different overclocking profiles, for example: skyrim: runs perfect – crysis 2: runs perfect – big file decompressions: fast, without stutterings – GPU&CPU stresstests: run without errors for hours
but not GW2 – it crashes after 15 minutes lol
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————
anyways, here are some other things to try out which may or may not help you identify your problem:
go to your nvidia control panel, at “audjust image settings with preview” check “use my preference emphasizing” and turn the slider all the way to the left and check if you can recreate the problem.
this will make sure that none of your nvidia settings are somehow responsible for your problem.
try performing a “clean boot”, this will determine if any background program is responsible for your issue or not.
go to start —-> run —-> type in “msconfig”
go to the “services” tab and check “hide all microsoft services” and the click on “disable all”
now go to the “startup” tab and disable all
reboot your computer, run GW2 and play a while
just enable everything again when you’re done
but it’s still weird that it’s just GW2…
maybe some texture files are corrupted, if you already tried “-repair”, do a complete reinstallation of GW2.
if you’re still having that weird glitch/bug, then it seems more and more like a hardware malfunction to me :/
im really out of ideas now
“Only the finest of potatoes in my zerkburgers.”
some pets are useless…they’re merely weaker copys of other one’s.
signets do have insane cooldowns…
a point too for you about the longbow, but keep in mind the range advantage.
i’d rather have slightly increased attackspeed for longbow’s skill #1.
spirits are ok.
besides that, it’s a really nice profession which keeps it’s promise: “jack-of-all-trades”
as much as i’d appreciate more variety in making a build, it would kinda miss the point of the profession, since the ranger is not intended to “specialize” in one particular thing.
oh well scrap that last sentence…
“Only the finest of potatoes in my zerkburgers.”
well i don’t know you PC specs…
otherwise i would suggest some tweaking, which would include defragmenting your drive, in case you’re not using a SSD, lower the graphic’s quality at your graphic card’s control panel, in case you’re GPU model is an older one or turn off windows visuals and all non-vital programs running in the background while launching GW2, in case you have a low performance PC in general.
“Only the finest of potatoes in my zerkburgers.”
yes, it will be able to handle GW2 at high settings.
i’ll take a wild guess and say it will run @55-60FPS (v-sync: on /framelimit: 60) most of the time during PvE.
just googled that system…pretty solid PC for it’s price.
i’m waiting for the guys who will recommend you all kinds of hardware instead of this ready-to-use desktop-PC…but it’s your taste and buisness.
“Only the finest of potatoes in my zerkburgers.”
I’m having this, too. 0.5-2 seconds of screen-freeze whenever I turn quickly. Turning the graphics down to minimum makes zero difference. Had run fine with most things at Medium/High prior to the update..
if you allow me to guess: do you have shadows @ultra?
oh and most of the stuttering-camera issues can be fixed by doing a 360 with the camera once in a while…especially after teleporting…well, that’s what i do.

ranger. why? 1500 range with longbow, AoE Heal which removes conditions, a pet as a short little additional aggro distraction, lightning reflexes, mass tourettes elite skill which grants 3 seconds invulnerability, a knockback bow skill, a evading sword skill, similiar to lightning reflexes…not to mention all the nice supportive/aggressive mishmash style of gameplay which can help keep your group alive a little longer.

btw, framedrops while turning the camera around are completely normal.
because of not knowing your system, here the most obvious solution:
just turn down the graphic’s quality step by step until your satisfied with the performance
“Only the finest of potatoes in my zerkburgers.”
well if you mean response from a-net, then you can wait forever, since it’s unlikely a problem with the game but rather with your hardware, especially your GPU.
the best thing to do would be, as i said, try out another graphic card if possible and playing again to see if the problem is solved or still there.
that way, you can be sure if it’s you graphic card or not.
“Only the finest of potatoes in my zerkburgers.”
“balanced”
my search for a balanced mmorpg lastet for about 5 years…my search has come to an end.
well, at least it’s the most balanced i’ve ever played :P
“Only the finest of potatoes in my zerkburgers.”
come to think of it…why are you want to “getting the most out of your high end nvidia card” in terms of performance, if it’s high-end anyways? i can’t even find a game which challenges my GTX580 on max settings.
still can get 10-15% more out of it safely by overclocking it…
sure, 3 screen sorround gaming @120FPS 3D Vision would probably a little bit too much for my GPU…but high-end ones still laughing their cores of because of the lack of challenge.
keep in mind, that most are sold overclocked.
sure, quality-wise, there is some tweaking potential, but for GW2, those changes you can make at the nvidia cp are barely or non-noticeable (depending on your screensize/resolution), except for disabling ambient-occlusion – it makes terrain invisible in GW2 (btw, nice opportunity to see all the useless, performance draining reflections you usually wouldn’t see :P)
oh and that “alienware owners doesn’t know anything about hardware” is…well…let’s just say “the smartest sentence”
sure, TC doesn’t made himself shine by doing all those imo irrelevant benchmarks but a few of his first-post tips are quite helpful – for tweaking “decent” or “good” GPU’s.
got myself a DIY PC, runs flawlessly now (long road until i was satisfied with my OC profile) but i still looking at some alienware pc’s like a child wanting a new toy.
some of them are really well made and balanced considering the fact that they are assembly-line-PC’s.
solid, nice price – perfect for starters who don’t know or don’t wanna know in-depth stuff about PC’s, but still want to enjoy playing games in high quality.
would make a nice “basic starter pack” for enthuasiasts as well lol
TL;DR
-some of TC’s tips are helpful for someone with a decent~good nvidia cards.
-alienware is a nice option for PC-newbies ho wanna play games in high-quality.
-this thread doesn’t make that much sense, unless the title is changed into simply “how to get the most out of your nvidia GPU”.
my tips:
-make sure you GPU got enough support to prevent bottlenecking (a good same-generation CPU and a PSU, powerful enough to fire it up as well as a mainboard which supports it’s BUS-type, for instance, if you plug in a PCIe 2.0 card into a PCIe 1.0 slot, the filetransferrate is just half of what it would be capable of)
-in case that GW2 throttles, remove any dust from your GPU’s fan and if it still throttles, manually set the fanspeed of your GPU’s fan with a tool like MSI-Afterburner (turorials @google.com)
-don’t OC your GPU unless you reached it’s reasonable limits and only if you know what you are doing (no, 200+FPS is NOT a reasonable limit :P)
-if you really want to tweak ’n test around, mess about at the nvidia control panel while you keep monitoring quality and performance after every change, which can be quite some work – the outcome is different on every system, screen, GPU, CPU, driver version…all that can and will have different performance/quality outcomes, even on 2 pretty similiar systems @ the same settings.

sadly, crafting doesn’t get you any money – it just costs money, thanks to insane exp rates, everyone leveled at least 1 profession to 400 and another one to 300+, plus the game just throws materials at you én masse. oddly enough, the materials themselves are more expensive than the crafted weapon/armor/consumable
sometimes it’s just luck.
my little brother opened a Black Lion Chest —->; unlimited bank portal
now he’s trippin’ gold lol
but most “money makers” use the monopoly way: gems<—->gold
still risky tho, except if you are going to save alot of gold, then wait for a event like halloween is announced, then spend it on gems a few days before the event starts and in the middle of the event you should be rich…maybe
what was i saying? it’s luck most of the time? no, it’s all about luck :P
well there’s still hardcore dungeon farming…if you’re into that kind of thing
“Only the finest of potatoes in my zerkburgers.”

no, Furmark just stresses, tortures and torments your GPU almost as much as GW2. (little joke there)
so while running keep an eye on the screen for graphical glitches aka “artifacts” and monitor your GPU’s temps while running – you can just disable the burn-in test at any time if the temps are getting too high.
“Only the finest of potatoes in my zerkburgers.”

i would greatly enhance the variety of weapons/armors, even low level, to satisfy more types of players.
currently, if you want to look really badgluteusmaximus/awesome/cute, you have to do dungeons, but not everyone likes them.
i would mostly add skins and “alternate” weapon/armor loots – same name, a star next to it’s name, as it’s own rarity sub-category and a way less boring look than it’s common drop counterpart.
also, i would add some motivation for PvE’ers to join the sPvP.
like PvE gear/skins, minis, materials and other stuff useful in PvE.
how about a dungeon-token bet before entering a tournament? :P
btw…wouldn’t this thread would fit better into the suggestion section?
“Only the finest of potatoes in my zerkburgers.”
it’s most likely not the game’s problem.
your GPU might be broken.
not 100% sure tho, more fixing/problem track down attempts must be done, like if you are having another GPU, capable of running GW2, that you can get your hands on for testing out temporarily, or try out different high demanding games to try reacreating the problem, to be 100% dure it’s not GW2…
another things i probably would waste my time with, includes rolling back to driver version “306.97”, running a GPU stresstest tool like “Furmark” or even running the " -repair" command line argument to verify the game files.
your problem is very odd and i don’t have the knowledge to help you any further
“Only the finest of potatoes in my zerkburgers.”
(edited by wauwi.9162)
GW2 seems just to be “overly secure” about heat and clock frequencies compared to any other program/game i have installed. or maybe it’s just a bug…
it even crashes on bad CPU calculations after 15 minutes ingame while trying out different OC profiles, then it terminates and the “overclocking problem-Guild Wars”-website pops up, while prime95 doesn’t show any errors/BOSD/freeze after hours
so i stopped using prime95 to stresstest my system…now i play GW2 to do this instead :P
to fix the “overheating” throttle, i am always running “MSI Afterburner” with a custom fan-speed curve before launching GW2, because anything higher than 79°C for longer than 5 minutes results in a 50-75% frame limitation which forces me to restart the game.
