I can only hope that when the inevitable trolls and chest-beaters appear with their +650 ppt screenshots that all servers can deal with it with the same level of maturity. Let’s not sour the mood of an already difficult matchup.

This match-up doesn’t need a thread this week, really.

This type of match-up just attract lots of trolls. New transfers and old trolls beating their chest and repeatedly posting +650 ppt score updates, exploiters coming out and lots of whining about them, complaints about transfers, blah blah.

As a TC player since release…I’m very sorry for what has happened to your server.

When the week started I thought the matchup was fantastic. I thought SBI were an amazing server, that their people fought well, held their ground even when outnumbered and brought the pain when they had numbers. Not even a week later, the entire server jumps ship. To the winning server in their tier, no less.

The glory chasers gave up their shot of staying as a server, keeping that “spirit” so often touted and being placed in a tier that would have been perfect for them for balanced competition (T2 if not T3 would have been exactly where old SBI would have fit nicely). But think about it this way – after the whole fiasco, after the paid transfers kick in and the ratings sort themselves out, each server will only have people who want to be there. The number-chasers will be grinding in the “top tier” they long for, and the rest of the people who play for fun and competition will hopefully be in tiers balanced for those needs now that transfers are no longer free. GW2 is a game – if you are stressed out playing it something is very wrong. Take a break, try other stuff you haven’t done in the game, maybe see WvW as a place to train your roaming skills against mono-colored maps for a few weeks. Just don’t take the easy way out and regret it later.

New server standings relative to each other?

Tier A: SoS / JQ
Tier B: BG / SoR (BG SEA+EU heavy and SoR NA heavy)
Tier C: TC / FA / CD

There is a clear divide between SoS/JQ and everyone else.

Keep in mind that SoR got 2 oceanic guilds from IoJ (HIRE is ex-IoJ) and a million guilds from SBI, a big chunk of which are Asian. I won’t be surprised at all if their coverage is stronger than even Blackgate now.

The same is happening in many other tiers – as expected, the end of free transfers is going to massively shake up the ladder. I kind of expect all the servers with existing oceanic coverage to float to the top, such as CD, Dragonbrand, and the current IoJ-augmented FA. How long that process takes and how many weeks of terrible matches will result, on the other hand, is anyone’s guess.

Interesting to note that while IoJ also imploded this week, they took 3 weeks in tier 3 to do so, and they left for the losing server in the tier. SBI took about half a week to implode and they went to the winning server.

I don’t think anybody is hating on SoR here…more of general disappointment at the last wave of transfers from a certain server that finally broke the tier in half. This matchup is going to be absolutely terrible next week, and likely for a few weeks to come. Considering the positive vibes and great spirit in all 3 servers just the beginning of this week…yes, disappointment about sums it up.

Teamstacking is to PvPers what bigotry is to the Tea Partiers. Every one of them will deny it, but a bunch of them do it.

People want to win to feel skilled, but when they’re not, they just join the winning team to make themselves feel skilled. Such the circular logic of being happy.

This isn’t a dig at SoR, but rather at the jokers who have and continue to join SoS. The need-to-fight-the-odds-to-feel-good masochists are a rare breed in PvP anywhere, even though almost everyone in any PvP game will claim that mantle with furious chest-thumps.

Anyways, we in TC should hunker down for a long bruising fight, since there are 4 T1 servers now. It’d be interesting to see how the next couple of months go.

I’m so confused at the rationale. The tier was shaping up to be amazing – yes, there was a clearly stronger server, but not overwhelmingly so. There was a fair balance and good fights to be had. What do we have now? An utterly broken tier with an incredibly stacked server, a completely dead server and one server in between. And for what? So people can move to the highest tier and then…what? Is that what WvW means? I always thought the game mode is about joining in to fight for your server against other servers of similar strength for enjoyment. I guess I’m wrong. It’s clearly about having the biggest number on a pie, and the highest placing in a meaningless ranking, even if all you do is jump around servers and beat on doors to do so…

Let me just say that the server transfer announcement couldn’t come at a worst time for us.

From what I know, we’ve lost at least 4 active WvWvW guilds after the announcement on server transfers, could be more as our PPT is half of what it usually is now.

Sorry to hear it. SBI has been an amazing opponent when you guys could pull the numbers – even when you couldn’t it was very obvious that the server is hardened through months of experience in the highest tier and that we have so much to learn from you guys. All the best and may SBI rally and stay strong because this has been a great T2 matchup.

I didn’t transfer; I started on TC and am going to stay here regardless of whether the server is T1 or T8.

I have a strong background in competetive PvP in GW1, SC and CS, but don’t have the time or interest anymore to spend hours everyday dedicating myself to just PvP and dealing with the bad attitudes which often go along with it. I still enjoy PvP and do my best, but with whatever I have, not worrying about my game time, gear, who I’m playing with or against.

And I like roleplay. I don’t call myself a roleplayer, but anything that adds more immersion to the world we play in is awesome to me. Having RPers around brings a flavor to the world which enriches my in-game time, even if I never roleplay myself.

Just yesterday – I hung out with some TC PvPers in WvW as we held off repeated attacks on Speldan from a much bigger SBI force and took the fight to SoR with a bunch of others after getting curb-stomped by then in EB.

I also ran into an initiation ceremony in the middle of nowhere in the world, players who I happened to do a dynamic event with tried to strike up a friendly banter with me in-character, someone I cheered during a different event sent me cookies and pie to say thank you, even though I never talked to them.

TC is a server that’s perfect for me. There are and will be severs with more hardcore guilds, better point margins and ratings than TC, but the mix of enthusiasm for WvW and the flavors players bring to my experience out of WvW are very very dear to me. I wouldn’t leave this server for my significant other if they were playing and wanted to move.

While I know that everyone who PvPs on TC doesn’t do it with my perspective, I bet a lot do.

I do have a hunch that PvPers on TC are ‘long-haul’ players. I bet this server continues to punch far above its ‘roleplayer’ reputation in PvP for a long time to come.

Some servers are just trying to plug outright gaping coverage gaps, others want to stomp more because they realized stomping is more fun than being stomped. Can’t really blame any of them.

Yeah I completely agree, and this was totally not the case. Just a rough patch when we went from peacefully escorting yaks around our 100% red map and checking upgrades and siege to fending off attacks from both sides sweeping our holdings with frightening speed. Sometimes these shifts happen and given the coverage we have (this was during EU prime time, roughly 2PM or so EST) there’s not much that can be done.

And to briefly say – I don’t think it’s fair to blame SoR for recruiting guilds looking to move from struggling servers. If I were in such a position, I’d want to be on a server with successful WvW guilds too. Though I am wincing imagining the pain this is going to cause for next matchup… something tells me the trench coat is going to take a serious beating… =)

I’ve seen some rumblings of players moving over to you guys from EU> Nothing huge, but people view you as the official RP server, and good at WvW so some people want in the fun.

This does come from observations more than anything, so it may not lead anywhere, but I’d be willing to bet you should see some movement into TC aswell.

TC has, fortunately, never been a bandwagon destination (I used the word!). It’s a hard server to get into in general, and has never given off that l33t WvW hardc0rez vibe that “hardcore” guilds seem to love. What we do indeed have is as you said a steady trickling of individual players and small but passionate groups that eventually form a solid militia base and steadily got us to where we are.

CD is one of the unofficial SEA servers…your oceanic presence is easily top 5. Good luck though.

[HB] of Blackgate. Herfolge Boldklub or something hard to spell like that…just really coordinated, organized and brutal on the field. They’re also generally chill and mannered on the forums, unlike many other kitten-waving “big guilds”.

Much like the reset day of our first match in T2 against you guys. There were loud cheers on TCBL map chat that TC took SM, some of us went so emotional, looked at the screen and wondered why TC is showing as Team Red while SM looks Green. Then we all realized we just Derped big time :P and yeah many on EB actually thought of walking straight into Lowlands keep thinking it’s theirs.

Very funny, I’m sure we’ve all done something similar before =P

Well SoR was 2nd before this week in T2 and was for a LONG time. Not sure why you are complaining.

I guess because the scores easily reflect that SoR is currently already the strongest in the tier before they made the switch.

Warriors have amazing mobility with Sword/Warhorn and Greatsword. Signet of Rage + Warhorn = perma-Swiftness and you have 3 strong “leap” skills.

It’s 10 times more hilarious because he is complaining about mobility on one of the already most mobile classes in the game, and whining that he can’t match what is supposed to be THE most mobile class in the game (thieves).

God forbid classes are differentiated and some are better at certain things (like mobility!?!) compared to other classes!

God forbid groups play to each other’s strengths and help support each other’s weaknesses. While we’re at it, I want my Warrior to be able to drop portals, my Guardian should be able to stealth and my Thief should be able to summon a dragon.

Arms dealing is not something to be shunned. It is a fair trade between an experienced Commander with a liberal siege policy, and a dealer who chooses to entrust the weapons he looted off the corpses of his enemies to better hands.

Umm…

Do you understand the scoring system? Their current score evolution is plus 19K where JQ is -25K. You don’t necessarily have to win to move up. They are certainly doing better than the server they replaced in T1, SBI’s evolution is currently -66K

I was referring to the screens of BG being kept at like 50ppt during oceanic prime, where they would have 600+ in T2. I don’t see how any server that could field their numbers can lose every keep and every tower, hence my observation. I guess I wasn’t too clear in that, but please be rest assured I do understand the scoring system and have no need of your education

I don’t get the hate, it’s a business transaction. Sure, the vast majority of people contribute for free because they want to, but I don’t see what’s wrong if he wants to profit off it instead. Either way someone is getting cheaper siege and he is getting money.

So…don’t buy his stuff if you don’t want to, but nobody really has any business pushing some arbitrary moral crap at the guy for playing how he wants and even offering a reasonable deal for it. I hope it won’t become a thing because that kind of gives the wrong vibes for a community effort like WvW, but there’s nothing inherently wrong with it.

Just to point out from your ss, GoM and DH are also full and they are T6. SoR is “very high” and leading T2. Server population has little to do with WvW representation.

So many “up and coming” servers have shot up the rankings, morale soaring and numbers bursting, ready to take those suckers on top by storm…

and then imploded. They reach the middle tiers, lose the population advantage and face more experienced servers, and implode. Not saying this will happen to every server that starts going up, but yeah. It will be a test.

What your facing at 12AM-4/5 AM Eastern are those that haven’t gone to sleep yet from the NA time zone. Same as you guys.

Is NNK NA? Looks like different names than we see in primetime. So doesn’t seem like NA, unless your NA team doesn’t start playing the game in earnest till like 11 PM NA. We rarely get pushed by DB prior to that.

But seems like a lot of these groups are not used to being hit back at all, other than maybe by a token force that its easy for them to overwhelm. Having 50 man groups routed by maybe half of that when they do actually meet organized resistance.

Shouldn’t be surprising really if that is all one is used to facing. It takes consistent competition to force you to improve tactically. But its definitely up there beyond this tier. We have played IoJ, CD, TC, these teams that are used to having to battle intensely off peak, and they are very good at it.

Just to chip in, 2 out of 3 current T2 servers TC and SoR have next to no oceanic coverage. We’re talking 10 people on 2 maps during those times…a strong oceanic is mandatory for T1 and for winning T2, but it isn’t everything. And any server that thinks they can ride a strong oceanic base all the way up is sorely mistaken. Crystal Desert will be like a brick wall, for one.

It’s weird because since WM left our coverage in oceanic times in T1 was absolutely terrible, we’d get to < 150 ppt constantly and sometimes like < 80 ppt. I mean SoS has crazy oceanic coverage but we just had nobody at all, outmanned on our BL etc etc. I can’t work out if it’s the NA prime time guys staying up late atm, rallying for the new match-up, or it’s just the (or a new) oceanic crew re-emerging once more.

Could well be a morale issue. As far as I know, SBI has always had oceanic/asian guilds other than WM, and I’m seeing at least a few of them come out in numbers for the past couple nights (Yaki, Syn, NYS are the ones I know, I’m sure there are many others). First week of tier 2 could have brought them out in force whereas they just haven’t been so active in T1, for example.

TC and SoR in comparison have little oceanic coverage to speak of. I’m not sure a server such as SBI who has been in T1 since the beginning can understand how “little” we mean when we say “little”, but here it is. Nevertheless, the week has started out awesome and the fights have been great. Coverage will eventually kick in and determine the point spread, but what matters is that everyone enjoys the fights ahead!

I’m just a random from the NA ladder, but from an outsider’s point of view if a server can consistently stay in tier 1, winning more often than not in a landscape as turbulent as the EU ladder, they are surely doing something right. What they do may not be pretty, and they may not be very nice about it, but sometimes results do speak for themselves.

I’ll really like to see how VS fares against the NA ladder top dogs. Too bad it will probably never happen

There is no real meaning to moving up the ranking. If you think hitting tier 5 was a brick wall, tier 4 will be like a sledgehammer to the face, tier 3 a spiraling abyss of tedium and despair and tier 2 a meat grinder against impossible odds at worst and constantly deadlocked at best. I haven’t been to tier 1 yet, and I’m not sure I want to. There’s no meaning to higher tiers, if you are enjoying yourself and having good fights that’s really all that matters.

Blackgate’s NA is nowhere near subpar. They have less numbers than their overpowering oceanic/euro counterparts, but they are tier-2 worthy (that is, more than a match for any tier 3 and below server and usually able to hold their own in tier 2 against very NA-heavy servers). No server can make tier 2 (or even 3) with “subpar” NA coverage.

On the other hand, TC and SoR are tier 2 servers that don’t have strong oceanic coverage. Oceanic is in fact easily the weakest timeslot for those servers.

As you said, of the other servers Crystal Desert also has a solid oceanic presence as I think they are one of the unofficial SEA servers so you get lots of Singaporean/Malaysian presence there.

SOS: Many NA, Average Oceanic, Little EU

SoS was/is the unofficial Oceanic server. It is manly Oceanic. We got a major influx of US guilds that helped filled the almost zero coverage we had in that time zone.

Once these NA guilds turned up SoS became more competitive due to having coverage most of the day/night. That turned us into a T1 server. We lack EU guilds but so does nearly every NA server (EU guilds play on the EU servers).

The reason people do that is a direct response to scoreboard posturing the have been doing for weeks before you even came to this tier. Oh do you honestly expect people to respond to that?

Before you get on your pedestal and perform your little self righteous act, maybe you should consider that.

Maybe the scoreboard posturing is in response to people saying their players all have no skill. How do you measure skill? BG is slightly outnumbered during NA and tends to have a lower (though never terribly low) ppt during that time. BG massively outnumbers the rest during oceanic and goes +650. As for battles and engagements, I’m sure every server wins and loses battles all the time. What makes anyone the judge which server is more skilled? Why even bring it in? Is it some ridiculous need to justify that +20ppt on the scoreboard?

And even if BG are in fact being kitten and going all WE BEAT YOU in our faces, what of it? You are lowering yourself to the level of their trolls by responding with stupid bullkitten. What’s the point? Who’s being self righteous? I just dislike seeing what was a perfectly healthy thread go off course by people who incite this type of crap. If one side stops responding to the bait the rubbish eventually stops.

Anyway, BG is moving up a tier next week. Just let it go.

BG has strong, tier-2 worthy NA. And obviously they also have an epic oceanic/asian coverage that happens to be able to exploit SoR/TC’s much weaker coverage during that timeslot. When you combine the two it’s not difficult to see why BG is clearly the strongest server in tier 2 right now.

BG’s NA is only “weak” if you compare it to their Euro/oceanic, which are both extremely strong. We’ve faced and beat servers with overwhelming oceanic (CD) before, but the NA presence cannot even be compared to BG. So yes, BG is benefiting a lot from the oceanic pvdoor that is getting them loads of points, but it’ll be silly to narrow their dominance down to that.

We don’t have large groups RPing in WvW. They do exist (and are always hilarious), but it’s not common and definitely not the norm.

I believe what OP is trying to get at is that because we have a disproportionately large number of RPers (who we assume for now are mainly not interested in WvW), we therefore have some sort of disadvantage against similarly populated servers (i.e tier 2 and up) that have bigger numbers of dedicated and organized WvWers.

This isn’t completely wrong (even in tier 3, I think any of the servers who’ve played us can notice that TC is far less “big guild groups” and far more “20 different guild tags militia”). But as many people have said, our large RP population doesn’t exclude us from also having a large WvW population. I’ve seen many RP-centric guilds do their part in WvW, and I’m sure many PvE-ers who hop by to contribute as well. Our massive population is part of what carried us through tier 3 and into tier 2, and many of them are the so-called “RPers” and “non-WvWers”. In time, more and more might well come to enjoy the game mode and grow our pool of WvWers. This is basically how TC has advanced all the way to tier 2 – organically, and never as a bandwagon destination. It’s why TC is great to be on, and if at our current state we can’t compete with SoR and BG (both excellent WvW servers), then so be it.
