actually, Blackgate needs less PvE carebear guilds.
we lost 3 oceanic guilds before the 7 day transfer took affect.
we shouldn’t be tier 1, maybe not even T2.
We have some good WvW groups, but we don’t have the numbers anymore… the
free transfers took care of that.

we have maybe 1/3 of the WvW population that the other two servers have.

I hate to be sour, but this doesn’t sound like the Blackgate that facewiped T3/T2 and danced over our corpses when 50 of you killed 3 of us. I guess it’s really just one group of deplorable bad eggs server-hopping after all, I’m sorry for your server.

Why are there so many babies threatening to quit the game because they can’t do one optional content that isn’t even required for an achievement title and doesn’t give any amazing reward? It’s like babies have a different concept of what a “game” is supposed to be from the rest of us.

Then again, people will just complain about not being able to get whatever the new highest rank of achievement is >_>

In my opinion, and it is JUST an opinion and I accept that others’ opinions will vary, hard content like this type of puzzle etc is for the every day game while Holiday content should be frivolous and joyful. I mean a holiday is supposed to be party time. No one socializes during an aggravating timed bug ridden jumping puzzle. Really, save the hard work for every day gaming and let the holiday stuff be about socialization and merriment only.

This strongly depends on the group you end up with. I do feel bad for people who end up with griefers and whatnot of course, but the bulk of my runs were with jolly folk who were making jokes at each other and laughing at our collective failure – while people who started to learn and eventually made it came back to guide others. It was a unique social experience – bonding with people who were suffering through the same frustrating content as you were. I liked the experience =D

I just got it to work again after rebooting my client, so its not one per day.
I think the animation for the tower just might be out of sync with where the gate actually is, or something along those lines.

A guildie mentioned something like this, he actually made it to the top over 20 times and did not make the final jump a single time. Relogged after a break and did it almost immediately.

I am about to stop playing this entire game because of this puzzle. In everygame I play I always go for achievments. I simply will not be getting this achievement. Since its only here for a few days and I have work/school/a social life and have already spent way over 8 hours on this puzzle and not made it half way up yet. There is simply too many people in the zone blocking my view. I am an asura but made a level 2 human which made it slightly easier to see but I still can’t do it. The green goo moves way 2 fast I fail on that part where u jump to the lower block and the green goo gets me there. I’ve had over 200 attempts now. I am not laughing anymore. I dont want the item, I just want the achievement. Please remove the achievement from this puzzle or extend the duration of it to a few weeks at least. If I miss this achievement I will NOT bother playing the game anymore.

I’m not sure whether to laugh at you or to feel bad for you.

It’s called an achievement for a reason. You may want to learn what the word means. If failing it makes you quit the game, well, yeah. Enjoy your next game where “achievements” are unlocked by anyone and everyone to make themselves feel good.

If they added an option to choose the tower as it is now or one where removed they time constraint and the rising goo, every single one of these elitest blowhards would be running the easier one 100% of the time, regardless of what they will claim on the public forums.

Some of us find the run fun. I like the feeling when I break out of the pack, as people fall to their deaths around me and I’m the only one remaining on the way to the top. I like being the reason why the people who fall early have to wait.

So no, you are wrong.

Air traited eles are significantly faster compared to those without the passive boost. From my experience though they tend to zoom ahead and then fall off at any of the tricky jumps due to lack of control. I believe having no or minimal speed boost is better for this puzzle as you don’t need it to clear the time-gated parts, but you do need the control for certain tight jumps.

It is very difficult to please an entire playing population. If there is a lack of challenging content people complain, but when challenging content comes (the mechanics of how the “challenge” comes about notwithstanding) people also complain. There’s just no way to please everyone when it comes to things like this – not making very difficult content will probably be the easier way out (just look at the !@#$storm over the clock tower), but I respect ANet for taking a stand and going “here you go, here’s a puzzle that’s difficult as hell and we expect you to fail it over and over”. It’s a matter of design philosophy I guess.

Bringing in disability as an argument to attempt to lower the difficulty of something DESIGNED to be difficult is…silly.

I can’t repeat enough times that I am not in favor of a nerf (not anymore – I originally was but it was out of initial frustration, it was pretty silly of me). The discussion has shifted in this direction, for me, because of the notion that you can just “work on your skill” – which is something that’s not possible for some players due to disabilities (and other reasons) getting in the way, at least not in a limited window of time.

It’s not something people won’t be able to live without, but it stings for some people, and it can’t be too hard to respect that, can it?

All I can say is I’m sorry this has to happen. I completely agree that making it not Halloween-exclusive so people can learn at their own pace is a great suggestion. I respect that people are fighting with certain limitations, and that sometimes it just doesn’t feel fair. My point is simply that it was perhaps never meant to be “fair”, and that using accessibility or “fairness” as an argument to adjust the difficulty is completely missing the point. I hope I do not come off as offensive in bringing this point across.

Well, if we then have so many people who think this is perfectly fine as it is now for a temporary puzzle, do tell me a reliable way to get past this part. I’ve tried about 120 times now and I’ve got past this part once. Either I need to hurry ? leads to me bumping my head to platforms from below or jumping off the area altogether, or take my time ? leads to the green mass catching up on me before any chance of getting to the later parts. Based on vids on YouTube, the green stuff becomes less of a problem once you get far enough, so it’s just this annoying starting part.

I usually play a norn, but switching to an asura didn’t change anything.

Is that right at the start? Jump on the little gear platform that spawns and then jump onto the next platform. It’s OK to spam jump here because you are unlikely to fall (it’s still possible obv) and you NEED to clear this part quickly to make it in time for the next portion.

Yeah, it’s right at the beginning, and that’s an awfully vague description. The main problem is the gear (visible in the distance) laying low a few jumps after where I stopped to take the screenshot. It’s so low that every time I get that far (after bumping to the small rubble blocks) it’s already sunken below the kill zone.

I’m sorry to put it bluntly but I believe that will be because you are clearing the front portion far too slowly. The first time-gated jump that most people have trouble with is a little rock at 0:48 of this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4w0NZAJVnQE

Observe the pace where you have to clear the front portion because you need to minimally be doing it that fast to clear that rock jump (he BARELY makes it, you can see the acid literally touching his feet).

After that rock there is another time-gated jump with the gear platform you have to jump down on. If you are too slow, the acid engulfs the platform with you on it. These are the 2 major time-gated portions in the run, if you are running into time troubles anywhere else my only advice is to practice and maybe watch some videos to become faster. Good luck.

I don’t know where to begin.
1) You don’t get “pushed” by other players. There’s no collision. What CAN happen is that bigger models obscure your view of your own character. To get around this, you just need to be able to track your character and predict where he/she lands when you get to see the character model. It does come with practice.

2) My experience is that most people in fact have problems doing the front portion fast enough. If they are getting blocked all the time they will simply fail the first few jumps and drop. But they are making it to the stone jump just to be too slow and get engulfed by the acid. That is a problem of practice – the few of us more practiced players were consistently staying ahead of the pack and clearing the time-gated jumps, with a variety of character model types and amidst larger Norn/Char models. You can’t say it’s pure luck if it’s the same few people making it far all the time.

3) I cannot understand your point about having no sense of progress. From the very first run, to say the 50th attempt, surely most people would have gotten better and progressed further. They would have become more consistent, and they would have figured out which routes to take, how to take certain jumps, when to slow down etc. This is learning as you play and what I meant by progress. I don’t know why you brought up the point about the “community” and how you seem to play with a lot of whiners. I guess whiners identify with other whiners more easily.

4) I spent 2 hours to become solid with the route and then did it over 10 times, followed by using other characters. I was running some with some guildies through it and having a good time too. I’m sure others do the same. Just because some people don’t have the right frame of mind to appreciate difficult content doesn’t make the content flawed.

I don’t understand why the discussion has shifted to disabled gamers. Obviously the notion that the difficulty should be lowered to cater to disabled gamers is ridiculous – where do you stop? Do you then cater it to toddlers? Do you start catering it to gamers with greater degrees of disability? Say you make it so people with a slight disability can complete it. Oh, here’s a gamer with an even more debilitating condition, and since you lowered the difficulty for the previous group of gamers you have to do it again! Eventually all games will be at the level where infant monkeys rolling their faces on a keyboard can beat it.

This is not a problem of discrimination but the fact that you CAN’T design content without having a TARGET AUDIENCE. This particular piece of content was DESIGNED to be difficult and requiring a certain degree of dexterity and coordination. By design, not the entire playing population will be able to complete it. Bringing in disability as an argument to attempt to lower the difficulty of something DESIGNED to be difficult is…silly. It was never MEANT to be able to be done by everyone.

Obviously you are only reading the parts of the discussion you want to read and missing the whole offered solution where EVERYONE is made happy by offering difficulty levels, either grouped or solo, timed or not timed, in an instanced puzzle zone for holiday puzzles along with a sliding scale of rewards to go with the level of difficulty. See? Simple. EVERYONE is happy. Unless certain people can ONLY be happy if they get to puff out their chests and say “I did it and YOU can’t! Neener neener neener!”?

Unless, of course, the content was designed so that certain people can do it while others can’t. That was sort of my point. Some people don’t want an easy mode option.

And obviously, there’s no offense meant to any disabled gamers struggling with this very difficult content. I don’t see anywhere in this thread where people specifically singled out disabled gamers as “inferior” or “unskilled” but such opinion should obviously not be condoned. My point is simply that one cannot expect all content to be scaled down for the benefit of any particular group of players, I hope that’s clear.

It’s amusing how it’s suddenly become “luck”. I can take my Asura and make it to the end about 1 in 3 tries amidst much bigger characters. Yes, it is incredibly annoying at the start. You have to find ways to make your smaller model characters more obvious (I dyed all my armor pink, or you could wear some sort of dress/robe). You have to adapt because you can barely see your character.

But here’s the deal – IT CAN BE DONE. And once you are past the initial rush of players (once you clear the first jump onto the tiny stone where most people fail), it’s all skill from there. Even at the beginning, there are certain things you can learn to make it easier. For example, that tiny block at chest level that so many complain about can be jumped ON to clear the next platform. Some jumps can be skipped to shave a little timing off. The whole fun of the puzzle is that you pick up on things like that as you go along. You get a sense of PROGRESS as you start reaching further and further into the route before falling. And when you make it, you know you deserved it.

So if you really think this is “all luck”, then I do not retract my statement that you are bad at jumping puzzles. Many others have done it, and they did not do so by crying about it. And if you are bad, then it makes sense that there will be some puzzles that you can’t do. Maybe this is it. Get used to it.
