I disagree with a lot of the changes to starter zones and levelling but this one doesn’t bother me.
You can still buy and sell using the Black Lion Trader window and if you want to collect the items there’s a city a few feet from the traders. It’s a good idea to visit your starter city early on anyway.
Yeah about that… veterans know this. But only yesterday, when I was briefly in Caledon, we had to point a new player to where the city was. Because surprise surprise, they are now only told about that at level 10, and then only when they actually do the story arc.
Everything is so unnecessarily convoluted now. I can’t for the life of me fathom why these changes were made. The levelling experience flowed so well before… it all made sense.
It made sense to you. It actually made sense to me too. But I know people who it didn’t make sense to.
Yes. I’m sure you did.
Seriously? You’re such a kitten that you can’t make common ground on something?
Over the last year and half I’ve been coming to the forums I’ve been helping people in the forums as well as in game. Some things aren’t as obvious to some people as they are to others. I don’t know the size of the gaming population in GW2 that can’t see what to do but I do know that whatever the game there will be some people who can’t see it. Some things suck about this update and some things don’t.
Have you ever helped anybody? Maybe look into whatever you were feeling then and do the same now.
Would you like some hard cheeze with your sad whine?
Colin.. No one asked for the leveling and new player experience to be changed. I can’t remember anyone complaining that it is bad. Like a broken record here, “if it aint broke don’t fix it”. You could have invested those resources on other things, like dungeons?? Or making open world PVE / DE more enjoyable and rewarding?
I seriousl’y don’t understand your decision making here. It makes no sense and is a clear example of the disconnect that you have with the playerbase. Again, no one asked for this and no one complained about it.
Personally, I’ve always said that the new player experience and leveling experience is second to none in Guild Wars 2. It is the best part of the game, because lets face it…GW2 is not known for it’s awesome level cap experience.
You need to admit that you did a wrong here… we didnt want this. Its confusing and makes no sense.
Heck, how about making it so newbies aren’t automatically refused for dungeons or world boss events their own level in favor of 80s, because newbies just don’t have the skills / DPS. Or make it so that level 80s with full world completion aren’t able to run through a lowbie zone oneshotting all the mobs while you as a lowbie can’t even get a hit in to get event credit? Those are the things I would consider discouraging as a new player (and even on a veteran player playing a low level alt).
These are player based issues. People are pricks. In the lower maps people are more than capable of adjusting their play to suit the area but they don’t. I’ve caught myself doing this, and I’m only on top of it because a year ago a guy I was doing the booze escort with in Wayfarer let me know he was waiting for me to get the first hit on things. It really got me thinking.
Its up to players, not the nanny.

I would be personally very unhappy if the amount of Guilds a player could belong to was reduced to only two.
Ideas that add to the game are great…ideas that remove what we already enjoy? Not so great. As evidenced by the player-base reaction to the latest Feature Patch.
Yep that seems to be the resounding feedback about reduction in guild occupancy. Alliances can exist outside of that though.
Chris
Indeed. Alliances would be adding something to the game, and I’m sure they would make many players pleased. Especially, Alliance chat. =)
Not sure about the logistics of Influence, Bonuses, Buffs, or anything else. What I mean is would people be asking for such things? Would several smaller Guilds want to pool their resources in such a way as to be able to, then, participate in content only the larger Guilds are able to now?
It might require some thought.
I think small guilds would Ally . WvW guilds would. And potentially for PVE content to with larger guilds. And WvW alliances with pve guilds. I have been adopted by a WvW Zerg Smashing guild called Helioz on TC and they wanted to ally with a PVE guild to do the content.
Depends on how progression is distributed and the communication channels etc.
Chris
I might be a little late to this part of the conversation but I’d be all for this. I’m in a tiny guild (2.5 people!) and very hesitant to join a large one, though I have a slot reserved for just in case. Anything that would allow family guilds and small groups of mates to get together and get things done would be wonderful.
This is one of the main reasons i like the idea.
Chris
I can’t stress enough how much I am in support of this too. We have 4 active members in my current family-based guild, and though we have managed to do one Bounty training mission, all the “real” guild missions are way beyond us. I know I could just join a bigger guild, but I really don’t have that urge – on the other hand it would be amazing to be able to do these activites in an alliance.
I don’t really think you’re the person who got me thinking about this (slightly over a day ago? Wayfarer? Twice as many as my guild?) but it would be great if an alliance hook our sort of people up. I had it in Daoc and we got so much done without losing out identities. Plus making friends!
Would you like some hard cheeze with your sad whine?
Three similar professions (armour not withstanding) given. I’d go with ranger as well. Play it for a bit and see if you like the pet. You can switch to thief then maybe (if you don’t fancy casting) and see how you go.
Crazily enough, there have been posts here where people have said they’ve gone to professions here that they haven’t touched in other MMos.
Would you like some hard cheeze with your sad whine?
I’ve got nearly 30! If I hadn’t been looking at other things I would have asked this same question since it was bugging me before the update. I don’t really have many other multiples, besides the Holographic Knights, but I’m not going to take them out until I see what the go is.

Correct me if i’m wrong. Im not an altaholic, but being bored i was trying a guardian right before the patch. Also because i was missing the “hint” achievement from guard. The “f1” “f2” skills were there even if locked, at level 7 f2 was available…now i dont see those skills even in the panel…did they cut the “i’m curious about what this skill will do” hype too?
For a guardian? Wut?
Yup, i uninstalled the game so i cant check righ t now but i recall that the “f1” “f2” up to “f4” skils were there in the panel just they were not available until the required level, but still visible (im speaking of Aegis fo example)
Ah ok. Seriously, the function button skills are spaced even worse than the others.
maybe i didnt explain myself well (sorry english its not my 1st language), or i didnt understand your last post (sorry if its that the case). But in the video i cant see what u call “function buttons” atop of the 5 main skills (before they was there). At least allow players to stay curioous about what that currently unusable skill will do, this way a new player will think that apart the 10 slot skill bar nothing more will come out.
Nah, no worries. Spanish? Anyway, guards only have the three buttons up above but they’re from the F1 – F3 buttons. Different keyboard? Still more anyways, I hadn’t heard that guardians were having trouble with these, just rangers and eles.
Okay lol, they are 3 :-D As said i dont know much about other classes, my main is an ele often used in d/d and i dont have problems switching to the right attunement i need in that moment as often as i can to get max advantage from the sigil of battle…i was simply surprised by the fact that they was removed at all for guardians in early levels, thats all.
My point was: u want to lock em, do it. But leave em visible, so that i know i will acquire that skill at that level. 4 skills out of 5 are greyed out in early level, but u can mouseover them and read “this skill will unlock at this level”. Deleting them even visually…mahOh wow, really? They not showing. One of my beefs (not that I’ve advertised it) is the skills showing as locked. Huh. You’ve got my mind twirling.

There are already complaints that the game is too face roll easy.
Just to take this little bit (and hopefully not derail the thread) but I’ve been thinking that the new early leveling is exactly this. Its become even more easy so I’m wondering if this where many of the current complains are springing from since many of the vets are more than capable of doing the early stuff blindfolded and this has made it even easier. Maybe if we knew exactly what was intended would help with that.
The first fifteen levels of games are supposed to be easy. That’s their job. For vets, they should fly through them and get to more challenging stuff.
Are you really telling me that leveling the old way the game wasn’t too easy anyway? Making it even more easy doesn’t affect my experience, because I’ve already leveled through every area a zillion times. It just makes 15-25 zones the new starting area for basic challenge…and even that won’t be all that challenging.
But since they seriously upped the speed to get to that area, I’d say it’s pretty much a wash. It was very easy to level up. But it was easy last week too.
Nah mate, I’m in your boat here. Seriously, it was kitten easy before. I’m just wondering if one the things that others consider the issue is the easiness. Though, thinking about it while I type, maybe not. People have been “talking” the easiness of GW2 for a while.

No it was very good. But it was very similar to the year before they even took out a dungeon while putting in place the small instance.
Many people expected an expansion and a return of the old stuff as well.
Oh ok, I see.

Trading posts were hurting too many people’s feelings and were just too complicated to figure out. The word “trading” doesn’t tell you anything at all about the NPC’s function so ANet graciously removed this headache from a town that apparently makes its business by not existing.

Read the comments.
And who constitutes enough time? Players gave it all the time they felt was necessary to make their judgment. You don’t get to decide what’s enough time.
The question starts with What?
How long until the vets who leave (there’s a thread) are counteracted by people coming in. The Players Helping sub forum has newbies asking questions and in game, just today, I’ve helped out people who are new or returned. Really, its a population question and like all of them we’ll never know.

Metrics are tools, nothing more.
The problem with too much focus on metrics is that you tend to design a game to match the metrics instead of innovating. I hope that ArenaNet understands this or they will fall pray to the same problem that the social game industry fell into. Too Many Clones. (Or is the AAA gaming industry already at that problem).
Extra Credits: Metrics
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqGcXOksFGgThe above video explains another reason that is applicable to Guild Wars 2. Often metrics based games create inaccessible products only accessible to a niche player-base. This is perhaps what happened in the initial development of this game. Leading to a complete re-design of core systems.
Of course, but read OP. He actually suggest directing your game by forum whines.
I know i wouldnt play THAT game, and most of this changes are partially based on forum whines (whines of GW1 skill hunting (which was bad), whines that game doesnt have any sense of direction and character feels complete when you ding 30, and theres no gear grind)
Metrics are part of the decisions making, and whining of forums should just be ignored if theyre smart.
But also if they’re smart they’re able to look through some of the whine to find truth. Its there occasionally, which is why I don’t bail the constant complainers up as much I’d like.

The first 15 levels suck for an experienced player, or at least they’re more limited. You also get through them in under an hour, or I did anyway.
That’s fast. I created a new thief and got to level 10 in 2 hours, 5 minutes. Even that seemed ridiculously fast to me.
I had a guardian get from 2 to 5 in Queensdale in 20 mins; it included time to post on the forums and getting a fresh mug of coffee. Obviously that’s not to level 10 but the first handful of levels are now really fast. May depend on profession and/or hour.
and you learned what about the skill sets or profession in those 5 levels?
Nothing! I wasn’t paying attention that aspect since I already know them. I was more interested in what was available to characters at a starting level. So it also included a trip into DR.
That was my point. The excuse given for this clusterf*(£ was that it was to help new players. My point is that if you learn ZERO about your skills, the profession, what you shouldn’t attempt as you will be downed, possibly die, how can this be the case?
Low level areas have now become a disengage brain (or just go for a coffee) and do as your told area, not a lets explore and learn area
Except I know its not for me. I’ve been playing this for a while so I know what to do and where to go. I wanted to see what new people would be in for. And I have to say, as an appalling altoholic, that it was nice to see that the early NPE levels were quick. You may not have seen any of my other posts but I’m very much disliking the skill locking. However, with 80 levels a new person should know much about their characters well before the end. My opinion of course.

I dread to go and see what changes were done to other zones (I hope not too many)
They added an additional heart quest in caledon forest at the POI of Rime’s Garden (Village of Astorea basically). You have to kill grubs and feed moas with apples. Unfortunately they copy &pasta some appletrees from Queensdale which look really out of place in the otherwise alien landscape of Caledon Forest.
In the Plains of Ashford they added two new hearts. One is placed at the cow ranch right next to the ramp that leads up to the Black citadel and involves killing spiders, killing wurms and putting hay into the troughs.
The second one is where the skill challenge takes place (where the skritt have their hideyhole in the wall). Involves killing skritt and firing cannons.I’m sure there are more changes in the other starting zones.
For Wayfarer Foothills they’ve taken out the southern Dredge heart in Wayfarer; moved the potato farm; removed the permanent rich copper from the jp; moved Bjarni off the mountain.
If any of the stuff that’s been removed was only just moved (like the taters) then I can’t find them.
Oh, and rock dogs added to the Jotun trade camp heart. Rock dogs!

I’ve been using this thread to keep track of things I’ve noticed: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/List-of-changes-and-issues/first#post4395219
- No black lion trading post npc on starter maps
- No node farms on starter maps
-Guild Bank no longer accessible from guild registrar (so no guild bank on wvw bls without upgraded keep)These are the most disturbing imo, there are a few other bugs/kinks in the system in the linked thread.
Node farms like the potato farm? I don’t know about other maps but the one in Wayfarer was moved and not removed. Still got taters.

zenleto , then may be we cant access in the starting area.. i havent created a new character after the patch , i just read the wiki , so i dono for sure
I’ve done a bit of investigating with characters on my second account that was only activated a few days before the leveling blog post. Hardly anything is locked; skills and skill related stuff mostly. Apparently there’s a few bugs in the system and the revealing of info to alts may be one of them. Not sure on those details though. But as soon as a character comes out of the level 1 area then its ready to travel the world and beyond. It isn’t clear at all and hopefully that will be fixed soon.

Gating for new characters is really the leveling part that is trash.
Pretty much, and I think this is the issue hinted at by Colin. Or at least I hope so. I haven’t played many MMos but I haven’t played one (from memory) where you couldn’t opt out of the tutorial stage if you’d already done it.

Its not locked. I’ve had a level 2 character go to the tp in Hoelbrak to test it.

Ah well, that’s a shame. We could do with with more Syd v Melb v everyone, and Aussie Aussie Aussie oi oi oi. This is really too bad.

I still don’t have retype my password. I wonder what’s going on with this.

Its also good to get rid of mobs pawing over a downed player. Its very situational.

They’re there. I have a feeling that the respawn for them is slow since there weren’t many lying around.
edit: I included a screenie of the map but it doesn’t want to load. Oh, there it is.
