I don’t really like these but I think its because I don’t have a character that would suit them. I’m not inclined to roll a new character to suit them either, which is something I’ve done for a couple of other weapon skins. Maybe they’ll grow on me.

This is a really interesting post. It never worked that way when I had a table top group, because it was always about story and never about rewards. I know we’ve gone six months without getting new shinies while playing table top games and no one cared or noticed.
But we did have new story (and a great GM).
Not really my point Vayne and I have read enough of your posts in the past to know you are smart enough to know what I am getting at.
Sure I know what you’re getting at. I think the post would be a whole lot more effective if you didn’t tie it into table top games though, because frankly, I don’t think most people play them anymore and it’s a different type of game anyway.
There’s very little about this game that resembles a table top game to me. Guild Wars 1 was far more like a table top game. This is quite a different experience, probably by design.
If you want to say give us more stuff we can get in game, I’m all for it. If you want to say we wouldn’t tolerate this in table top games, go ahead. Your argument is fine. How you couched it, I don’t find particularly convincing.
I agree that more items should be available in game for playing the game.
I have to agree with all of this, and its quite a lot more reasonable than my response was going to be.

There’s a small thread in Accounts about this. Been going on for a while it looks like. Just on and off.
Would you like some hard cheeze with your sad whine?
If you don’t get it then don’t do it. Its no big deal. Some people like it and others don’t. Without trying it you’ll never know what its really all about but it really makes no difference in the end. Not everybody can see fun in the same things.

I’d imagine that the RP they would have been doing there would have been some sort of crusade against the Risen; doing the events as a “cause”, speaking in character, that sort of thing. I’ve seen a few announcements over the last few months from people organising these things on various maps. Ever since the new age of Megaservers actually. Shows my server wasn’t too interested in this. Seems fun but I’ve never tried it.
Anyway, it all comes down to imagination.

Yes it did. The original Guild Wars was focused primarily on PvP.
No, it didn’t. PvP was definitely a game type, yes, but it did not focus on it. If you missed out on it, the vast, vast majority of the game was PvE. Even when just talking about the base campaign.
The original goal behind developing Guild Wars was to make it focused primarily on PvP, it was only secondarily a PvE game. However, as time went on, they great expanded their PvE portion. So, I agree with you that it later became mostly a PvE game, but at first it was mostly about the PvP niche. That is why they named it what they named it.
This is pretty much my recollection from back then. At the least, all the advertising for the game pointed at this and it was the reason why I didn’t bother with GW at the time.

There is no challenge in anything after two years,
Hmm, hardcore mode? If the character dies, it’s gone for good. Can not WP back to life, can not be rezzed from full dead(dead, not downed). If the character has any rare or better equipment it gets auto-sent to the mail box, otherwise it’s deleted along with the character. Make a new char and start over.
How far can you make it on one life?
Permadeath. I have two character slots for this. Fun times.
How far can you get? ~curious~
So far they’re doing alright but they’re on a second account and I don’t play them as often I’d like. They were two of my testers of the NPE and I haven’t gone easy on them. Only open world, no PvP or WvW. I suspect I’ll find it more difficult with mid level dredge and, if they get that far, high level krait.

SAB only matters to the SAB crew. How big a group that really is anybody’s guess. We’ll learn more about adjustments to the traits thing as they happen, I suppose.
I only come here to discuss things with other players, show off screenies, and throw snide comments into dumb threads. I’m not fussed one or the other over the devs being present of not. Its been nice seeing red tags all over the place, though.

I’ll choose Kellgis for this.
He smells like clean mountain air, rocks, earth, and pine trees….after a wash. Before that he’ll absolutely reek from running around in his heavy armour all day.
…LoL. Well at least his armor is well aerated. It would be easy for him to bend down, grab two hands full of snow and scrub his armpits. Maybe bending down would not be that great an idea. What’s he wearing under his kilt?
Being a good maths boy he has boring Priory undies. And wooo does he need that style armour! Sweats like the Norn champ that he is. Much like his good mate….

He smells of smoke, sweat, ash, and the warm blood of his foes.

I find it sad that most of you focus solely on the problems with gating, completely omitting the content removal/simplification issue. I guess my priorities are kinda skewed.
No, they are just your priorities. The “gating” is something that it seems many veterans don’t see as needed and that’s their priority. We’ve all really only got our own special interests at heart.
For the record, I share your priority except for calling it a priority. Its become a pet peeve, and eventually it’ll become a “oh yeah, I remember that”.
It’ll be interesting to see where the dev team go from here.
Would you like some hard cheeze with your sad whine?
As has been detailed many times we will not be disclosing work in progress. I don’t know how to make this any clearer. As uncomfortable as this may be this is the reality.
Yeah, but as I’ve said, that policy needs to change. It’s like saying “I’m sorry, but we’re just going to be deleting all of your characters when they hit level 53, and there’s nothing to be done about that, I don’t know how to make this any clearer.”
It’s just a toxic policy, and you can never have a fully healthy relationship with the community until it is disposed of. I give you a great deal of credit for trying anyway, but it’s like boxing with both hands behind your back.
And on the flipside the community needs to recognise that there is a limit, or a boundary if you want, to how far they can go with expecting answers from questions. People may not be happy with it but it’s there.

Ok, some other stuff missing from that list:
- Replacing the missing profession mechanics UI for the Elementalist, Engineer, and Guardian professions
- Offhand weapon not unlocking until level 7
- Weapon Swapping not unlocking until level 15
- Utilities 7, 8, 9, and 0 not unlocking until levels 13, 24, 35, and 40 respectively
- Underwater combat not unlocking until level 8, underwater skill 5 not unlocking until level 23
- Most juvenile pets missing from starting zones
- Mechanics of many early heart quests reduced to make them more boring.
- Apples missing from apple orchard
I may still be missing a few, but fixing those need to be a priority as well.
Good luck with that list, the level unlocks are the core of NPE, not bugs.
A lot of people are expecting some kind of legacy feature. Where veterans don’t have to go through the same gating that new players do.
I would expect the info suppression like hiding vistas, nodes and the like from mini and main maps to be removed for vets but not the level gating. XP curve has been adjusted to compensate for the new unlocks.
This is what I’m thinking also, and would make more sense.

well i just invited a friend who has literally no idea about GW2.
when he finished his tutorial, he has no idea where to go. so i had to explain that you go hearts first because the story starts at lvl 10.
now he’s 17 and does not know about swapping weapons, and their slots.
and according to him he finished his hearts on the 1-15 map and he has no what to do next because his story needs to be at level 20.
Did you tell him he can go to another map to do more exploration?
Unless he turned the arrow off, it should point to the next map and tells him to explore there. I’ve seen it do that on my level 80 chars with less than 100% map exp!oration.
Yeah. I suspect I just got sucked into something that I’ve been avoiding for the last couple of days.

I have a working theory. But it’s just that, a theory. I’d have to do a lot more testing to see if this is what happened. Anet didn’t believe people could make their own builds so they made certain traits they saw as advantageous to leveling very easy to get (like the chest in Kessex which anyone can do), and put the ones that were much less beneficial (on average anyway) behind harder targets…trying to guide people to the easier stuff that might help them right away.
That actually makes a lot of sense.
Whenever something happens that makes no sense to me, I think I must have missed something. I figure they didn’t get together in a room and draw straws. I figure they have a reason whether I know it or not (or whether it’s a good reason or not).
I was leveling a character, I honestly don’t remember which profession now, to test the April 15th patch. I got the kessex chest without even realizing it was an unlock but when I looked I was like, okay I can see the value of this one being so easy. But I didn’t follow through and check everything else because I’m lazy as hell. lol
This might explain why my conjured weapons ele has traits I want stuck behind some eye raising things, and one of my more straightforward warriors doesn’t have to do much to get his. Nice find if its right.

To the OP
I the Champion Bandit Lieutenant feel all your pain, I mean… I was recently demoted to veteran status (and also changed my sex to female) because I can’t hold my own against a single filthy Charr named Meat Chop. If it was not them, it was the large bands of adventurers and that kitten queen’s loyalists! shudders at the thought of them coming Sometimes its not the large bands or a Charr, but a woman, a single Canthan Elementalist woman by the name of Yumiko who shouts at me and calls me “White Mantle Trash!”, I go, “Who’s white Mantle?” and then I’m burned to ashes before I can say my pre-determined lines. That is by far the worst death any bad guy can ever experience.
At least in hindsight no one comes to kill me anymore now that I am not a Champion— What? No… that voice! It can’t be…NO NOT HER!! “DIE WHITE MANTLE SCUM!” NOOOOOOO IT BURNS!
Yeah my life sucks.
Sincerely,
The Bandithaunt Caverns’ChampionVeteran Bandit Lieutenant.

Just about everyone who has posted their thoughts after trying it out has come the same conclusion and that is the skill locks, and level spacing of the unlocks, leave a lot to be desired. Particularly for veteran players, but I’m not convinced new players need their elite unlocked so late either. I’m really interested to see how it should have been when the Anet guys get back to us about it.
Skill related stuff and the cosmetic changes to early maps have really been given the thumbs down.

Colin.. No one asked for the leveling and new player experience to be changed. I can’t remember anyone complaining that it is bad. Like a broken record here, “if it aint broke don’t fix it”. You could have invested those resources on other things, like dungeons?? Or making open world PVE / DE more enjoyable and rewarding?
I seriousl’y don’t understand your decision making here. It makes no sense and is a clear example of the disconnect that you have with the playerbase. Again, no one asked for this and no one complained about it.
Personally, I’ve always said that the new player experience and leveling experience is second to none in Guild Wars 2. It is the best part of the game, because lets face it…GW2 is not known for it’s awesome level cap experience.
You need to admit that you did a wrong here… we didnt want this. Its confusing and makes no sense.
Heck, how about making it so newbies aren’t automatically refused for dungeons or world boss events their own level in favor of 80s, because newbies just don’t have the skills / DPS. Or make it so that level 80s with full world completion aren’t able to run through a lowbie zone oneshotting all the mobs while you as a lowbie can’t even get a hit in to get event credit? Those are the things I would consider discouraging as a new player (and even on a veteran player playing a low level alt).
These are player based issues. People are pricks. In the lower maps people are more than capable of adjusting their play to suit the area but they don’t. I’ve caught myself doing this, and I’m only on top of it because a year ago a guy I was doing the booze escort with in Wayfarer let me know he was waiting for me to get the first hit on things. It really got me thinking.
Its up to players, not the nanny.
Actually, this IS a design flaw, not a player flaw. Every developer knows there are people out there who enjoy spoiling other players’ fun. The trick is making it kitten the spoilers. And the downscaling system GW2 employs makes it easy. A max level does SO much more damage than a low level player in a low level zone, it’s not even remotely funny. And yes, I have actually tested this with 80 and low level of the same class in the same zone. It’s just plain ridiculous. A level 80 ranger can run into a cave full of lvl 3 Sons of Jormag, kill 10+ of them in seconds and hardly take any damage. A level 3 ranger will pretty certainly die in seconds before they’re even in the cave.
Having played games with downscaling before, I can flat out guarantee you that it is quite possible to do WAY better than this, making it so that if you downscale, you are actually on a par with the low levels for which the zone/mission/boss was originally intended.
Yup, been mentioning that dowscaling should be much more….downscaled….for long now. Really. There should be at least a chance of lvl80 dying in lower areas (accompanied with removing any loot restrictions still in place)
Same goes for upscaling. It should be much more….upscaled ;P
Absolutely.
Players can be more considerate though.

My only worry is AC unlocking before you know why you’d be going there story wise due to PS gating.
They must have talked about this in meetings. Contrary to forum belief, these guys and girls aren’t stupid so I’m wondering what’s coming up. What is in the “background”? I don’t need to know right now and I don’t go for conspiracy theories but it seems odd.
You be surprised what can fall through the cracks detail wise when trying to big picture things for a game. I think there were a lot of big picture changes envisioned for the game which lead to some unintended consequences, which in turn has let to the kitten storm on the boards and in map chat.
I’m sure they will look it all over again though once players have vented and reported various things.
Makes me remember an article where they spoke to the people over at Valve about Portal and how all the devs had a big laugh over the loop that goes rolling by at the end. The all thought that was going to turn into the next big internet joke/meme, etc and after the game released everyone focused in on “the cake is a lie” which was some random throw away the devs had more or less forgotten about. Basically what devs think when making the game and what the players take away from it can usually be two very different things.
Yeah, actually very true. I’ve trained people in my job and just when I think I’ve covered everything and can sit back for a bit I get hit with question that really throws me but is obvious. I don’t know, I’m not going to get in depth with anything (though it might help my job…) but something just doesn’t seem right.

It takes me 15-20 minutes to get to level 10, and that’s “not pushing it.”
Can you tell me what race and class you were using?
I took the time while levelling yesterday. Only doing hearts I managed to get lvl 10 in about 1 and a half hour.
Maybe a matter of experience and/or profession? It can be quite fast, but only if you know what you’re doing. I’ve tried but it can be difficult to really put oneself into the shoes of another when it comes to something like leveling in an MMo. Everyone is different and sees things differently.
