Hey there,
I’m glad that a reboot helped resolve this, but we’d really like to resolve this more fully.
Can you (or anyone else who has experienced this issue) help with details about your character? In particular, we’d like to know this about the character:
- What outfits did you equip or unequip (in a recent timeframe) before the issue started happening?
- Did you use any tonics? What were they?
- Did you use any Costume Brawl toys? Which ones?
- Did you change any armor pieces in the wardrobe before the issue started happening?
- Did you equip and/or upequip any sort of item or equipment (say, armor, weapons, that sort of thing) before the issue started happening? For instance, did this happen when you equipped a certain sword, put on a specific amulet, took off your helm, that sort of thing?
- What outfit and armor set was your character wearing?
- Were you making any changes to the character’s appearance or equipment while under stealth?
- Were you experiencing similar issues before this issue began? For example, were hair/eyes/armor/underwear showing up during stealth?
Thank you SO much for helping us resolve this problem.

Really excited for everyone to try out stronghold and give me feedback. See you in game everyone!
Evan, do forfeits count as losses on the leaderboard and are they reflected in your displayed W/L ratio? Furthermore, does the winning team against the team with a deserter still get credit as usual? Lastly, if you win as a team with a deserter do you still get credit for the match?
For the leaderboard and in-game UI:
Wins include victories and byes.
Losses include defeats, forfeits, and desertions.
Winning against a team with a deserter results in a bye.
If you win with a deserter on your team, it is still a victory.

If there is a thread that has a run down of the season 2 points system, could anyone please link it, thank you
This is why I linked you the wiki page.
As others have mentioned, if you are disconnected for longer than the grace period then your game result and any party members’ results are considered a desertion. Other team members will receive a forfeit if they lose.
Desertions will cause your ladder points to update as if you had earned zero team score:
if game.result == ‘desertion’:
finalScore = 0
This results in the most harsh ladder point update for the odds bracket the match fell into. i.e If you were heavily favored to win, you will receive -3 points. If you were disfavored to win, you will receive -1 points:

Thank you, however I’ve read through that already and still can’t find an answer to the question I want answered most.
Can we change classes before and/or during a match? -Can you answer this directly?
Because the system might try and minimize duplicate classes for those of us playing roaming dps classes the issue of having point holders is all too real when Q’ing. Side note, League of Legends implemented a team builder Q some time ago, and might be worth looking into.
Switching classes is treated just like any other disconnect. The game doesn’t know if you’ve gone to character select, or chopped your internet connection with an axe.

We haven’t forgotten this issue and hope to have some information to provide as an update really soon.
I think everyone would agree that it’s better to go through a brief period of disabled access rather than allow the acquisition of a whole lot of unearned titles. But of course the best thing would be to get everything aligned so we can kick start the HoM and you can access it.
Again, very sorry for the delay and I’ll post when we have any new info on this.

There were three very substantial threads on this subject. We’ve merged into one and I’ll check to make sure it’s on the “bugs to be reviewed” or “bugs actively being investigated” list.
In the future, if you guys see threads on the same topic, and if you’re willing to help out, it would be great if you grabbed the permanent link to the multiple threads (the little chain image in the lower right, then “copy link”) and flag it so a moderator can review and potentially merge.
Thanks to Sina for making me aware of the merge-ability!

I’ve seen this internally a couple times but we don’t really have a good reproduction case. The current theory is that something is causing a “soft leak” with our model files so when the game closes it has to go through thousands of model references and close them down. This involves a lot of cross-thread communication which can be extremely slow on some hardware.
If you can get a solid reproduction case (WvW/PvP/world bosses/etc.) could you post here?
Thanks!

The short answer is “yes” everything got moved around.
You can also put four minis of the same rarity into the Mystic Forge for a mini of the same rarity
I have not heard of any increase in system specs in relation to Heart of Thorns, but I can ask around and see if there’s the likelihood that the specs will change.

With this latest build all of the games that were running on the strangely-behaving 64.25.38.162 server have been moved away from it.
With the todays BLTC patch adding again two Miniatures for the Gemstore, I started to ask myself, when and if we will ever get to see a new set of normal obtainable Miniatures, most likely together with HoT perhaps

The map caps are about 10% lower than when I started looking into this. I’m not comfortable raising them higher right now. Sorry!
We have hardware monitoring on our servers. Just to be sure I visited our head of TechOps and we looked at all of the hardware monitoring before I moved the map.
The “latency indicator” is now behaving in Blackgate Borderlands as it should be.
I’ll play in this map when I have time today but please also let me know if it is behaving a better for you. So far it looks better to me.
Okay – we looked at the hardware and it seems fine and is passing traffic fine so the next step is to do the experiment of moving this map (Blackgate Borderlands). There will be a couple of in-game announcements first.
I’m investigating this issue now, the story step hasn’t changed in months so I’m not sure what’s going wrong. (The bug with some story steps stalling was fixed last week, so this appears to be an unrelated issue.)
Definitely strange goings-on in Blackgate Borderlands. The map was relatively empty but my special “latency indicator” graph was bouncing around like crazy, even though nothing was going on nearby. It could be hardware. We can move the map to different hardware but that requires kicking everyone because everyone has to disconnect and reconnect to the new hardware. It’s an easy test to do just inconvenient for people playing (about the same as if a new game build comes out). I will consult with my colleagues at work whether we should move everyone to different hardware.

Put in a Customer Support ticket and explain everything in as much detail as you can, we can look into it. Scamming is bad and they will feel bad.
The “rubber band” variety like you report means the client and server are not communicating and if it gets bad enough you get disconnected. This is the problem I’m working on understanding.
In the short run, just in case you are getting traffic shaping from your ISP, try, as an experiment, using “/clientport 443” on your command line. This moves you away from our standard port 6112 which some ISPs associate (incorrectly) with torrents. What happens with port 6112 is your traffic will be fine until you hit a zerg, then your internet traffic takes a big jump, and then (in some cases – not necessarily what is happening to you) your ISP or another one along the line will drop a lot of your traffic and/or disconnect you because they think you are serving torrents.
(edited by Stephen ClarkeWillson.1802)
ALSO! It will be very helpful if you can post error codes when you are disconnected. When the error message is on your display you can press control-c and it will copy the error to the clipboard which makes it easy to paste in here. I just created the error below by force-closing my connection to the game server with a utility program and then copy/pasted the error here:
The game client lost its connection to the server. Please wait a few minutes before restarting the client and trying again. (Code=7:11:3:191:101)
Sometimes skill lag is across the entire map and that shows up in the charts I’m tracking. At other times, and I saw this for myself over the weekend, some people are fine and some people have giant pings and other people are DCing in the same battle.
BTW, when you run a long way on auto-run and have a problem you’ve probably already disconnected but didn’t know it until you tried to use a skill or do a special movement command.
This is the more interesting thing to me now – why are some people DCing but others in the same map are fine? My current course of action is to dig through the connection logs and look for a pattern.
There are some very valid comments here, and addressing concerns with facts may be the best way to do this. We always try to be the most open and honest with our community, so here it goes.
“I thought ArenaNet always perm banned all gold buyers!!!11!”
This is not true, and will never be true for Guild Wars 2. To explain this, I must first explain the differences in impact on a game between Gold Buyers and Gold Sellers and their punishments.
Gold Sellers
Gold Sellers (or RMT) has a singular objective in any MMO, and that is to make real money profit. They accomplish this through multiple different means, and it has varying different impacts on the game it is targeting. For Guild Wars 2, the main way that RMT targets us is through Account Compromises, Fraud, and Botting.
For Account Compromises, the impact is obvious on both a global and a personal level. RMT Gold Spam, Phising mails both in-game and out are the global impact. We have always been swift to action this type of activity in our game, however the cycle continues due to players who fall for scams and phishing getting their accounts compromised. Every time an account is compromised, that wealth is redistributed through the economy, causing yet another but less visible global impact. In the coming weeks and months we will be introducing more systems to help users protect themselves and help protect them automatically.
For anyone who has ever had their account compromised, I guarantee it feels personal and it’s not fun (please use Mobile Authenticator, PLEASE!).
Fraud, while I can’t talk much publically about this (for obvious reasons), it falls under the “the silent but deadly” category. It can have a much larger impact on a game than one might think. ArenaNet will never and has never budged on this, and we will always take strict and decisive action against any account or organizations that attempt to commit fraud against us.
Botting probably has the most visual representation in-game that everyone can see. However, botting has so many different sides to it, I could go on for days. We’ve banned more bots than I care to admit, and over time it has become less and less likely that a player will run into a bot. It’s easy to take the stance “I always see bots”, but I also know that the community has been fantastic at reporting them when they do eventually come into contact with them. We are never going to fully get rid of bots, that’s always going to be the case for any MMO. I do think we are doing a fairly good job of minimizing the impact that bots have on the game and gameplay experience of players.
Gold Buyers
Now to Gold Buyers, and their impact. It’s very easy to claim that players that purchase RMT Gold are the root cause of all the problems above. Often I see the argument presented “If they didn’t buy gold, RMT would go out of business”. You know what, I agree with you. However, it’s never going to be that simple (unless you are Diablo 3, hah).
Gold Buyers are the complete opposite of Gold Sellers. They want to spend money so that they can participate in the game the way they want to. Instead of creating wealth in the economy maliciously, they are instead using that wealth they acquire to stimulate the economy by purchasing within it. Their methods of acquiring these things are no different than they would be in real life, they just happen to be furthering the chain of impact from Gold Sellers.
So, the difference becomes malicious intent vs intent to participate in the game. While against the Rules of Conduct, purchasing gold was given a much wider birth due to the correct perception that they were in-fact participating in the economy in a way that was not malicious. That’s not to say that we didn’t ban anyone for Gold Buying, or didn’t go after Gold Buyers, it simply means that it wasn’t our top priority.
That still is not going to change today, Gold Buyers are not going to be a higher priority than Gold Sellers. Malicious intent will always get the most of our attention as possible.
“So why announce this now?”
Guild Wars 2 has been out for almost 3 years now, and during that time it has become increasingly clear that relationships have been established between some players and the RMT market. That relationship has become a somewhat reliable one and players who purchase from RMT are likely to continue that trend. By increasing our enforcement of this, we intend to break that relationship now and forever. Buying from RMT will no longer be anywhere near as safe as it was before, it’s time for gold buyers to say goodbye to their RMT friends.
(edited by Chris Cleary.8017)
Might be the people that DC have been in the middle of the fight spamming their skills ?
I considered this as a possibility so I tried it on myself and failed to DC. However I can imagine that someone like a Commander (who was a person I heard was DCing a lot) would be firing skills as fast as possible in the heat of battle and that caused a problem. It shouldn’t be a problem but perhaps combined with lag there is a problem. So one thing y’all can try at home if you notice that you’re getting skill lag try easing off on the keyboard. This is just something experimental to try.
Hey all,
We have been fairly relaxed since launch on players purchasing wealth from “Real Money Traders”, but that stops now. We will be taking a very active stance against RMT buyers from here on out.
The purchasing of wealth from these “Real Money Traders” violates our Rules of Conduct. These traders are often a cause for fraud, hacking, and identity theft.
Repercussions from purchasing wealth can result in removal of wealth and continued purchasing could result in action against your account including temporary suspension or permanent ban from the game.
I have this fixed in a future build. Requires a bit of localization and such so it won’t go out for a bit. We’ll be keeping the bigger events listed, so PAX Invitational, WTS – Beijing, WTS – Boston, etc. Shoutcaster list will be seeing a bit of love as well.
This should now be fixed on live.
Thanks for the report on this. Our web team has pushed a fix for this issue and it should be working as expected at this time. If you’re still experiencing this issue (after clearing cookies and cache of course), then please let us know.
Kreapn — as you’ve seen, people play the game differently. No problem, but you would have liked to know that before being left alone in the dark, right?

I hope you have a blast next time!

I’ve increased the map caps on all of the Borderland maps. I continue to explore why people get disconnected in zergs (as I said, it has never happened to me, even when I visited a zerg where other people told me it happened in that exact zerg).
If you’d kindly post the bug in the Bug Forum, I’m sure the team can take a look. Alternately, if you use the in-game support system, that would be helpful as well.

I’ll log into the Far Shiverpeaks map and have a look. (It’s lunchtime for me so a good time to play WvW!)
Okay – back to the issues. My graphs say “server induced lag” is greatly reduced (not perfect but very playable) but many people here are telling me they get a lot of skill lag and disconnects. I’m going to call that “communications induced lag” and it sounds like a very serious problem. Sadly I’ve never run into it. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen – I believe you all have a valid complaint! It’s just much harder to diagnose than a problem that happens to me. It could be our servers fail to send updates for some reason, or the client fails to process them for some reason, or some other communications channel problem. Yesterday in-game a person contacted me and said their guild chat and guild status was broken. I suggested using “/clientport 443” to see if they got a better connection and they did and their guild problems were solved. To me that means they were a victim of traffic shaping. I understand nobody wants me to blame the internet – so I won’t. I’ll assume this is a problem on our side that gets exercised in big battles.
As for zero ping being interesting to me … I go by something I call “Pat’s Dictum” which I learned from Pat Wyatt. If something seems a bit off in asynchronous programming you should check it out! It could be a simple UI bug or it could be that there is a broken communication path to the game! I won’t know until I or one of the programming staff figures it out. It might be nothing or it might be very important.
So I’ll be turning my attention to “communications induced lag” and trying to find a way to measure it across the player base since it doesn’t happen to me. I have no idea how long this will take but it’s very important to me to figure it out.
Hi all. “Studio Technical Director” at ArenaNet means I’m responsible for the engineering of the game and related tools (hardware and software). “Head of Engineering” is more descriptive of the role. I’ve been at ArenaNet nine years; I started as a server programmer on Guild Wars 1. That’s why I pay attention to server perf among many other things.
