I can’t give a “soon” on this one, but it is being looked at and the problems were identified and repro’d by QA. Once the bugs are written though it’s out of my hands until a fix is delivered to us for testing.
This chain and a few others that come to mind are a bit fragile and the team might opt for a better, but more time consuming to fix, solution. On our side we spent the better part of several months tracking this down this issue (and other meta chain bugs) from threads here, other forums, the wiki, and on live by debugging the chains that are stuck.
I wish I could give you much better news, but I also don’t want you to feel like you’re shouting into a void.
Trying to achieve the Lavish Llama at the current rate would be, as someone aptly noted, madness! The good news is, next week will bring some concrete details on how you can start earning them at a much more rapid pace through participating in select tournaments.
After a ton of debugging, can safely say GW2 is no longer playing nice with certain audio drivers. It’s apparently pre-loading/querying audio devices, even those NOT selected for use, then not terminating them properly on exit.
Completely removed all Maudio drivers (which prior to these buggy game updates GW2 worked perfectly fine with) , the 5 minute hang disappeared.
No such problems with TESO, GW2 versions prior to March, or any other software.
If you’re suddenly having these 5 minute hangs on every single exit, it’s likely drivers/resources not being properly released by GW2.
Basically stuck with the hangs unless Anet decides to squash this resource bug :/
Axiom could you try something? Run the game with “-nosound” on the command line for a couple days and let me know if you reproduce the issue.
Something that I do notice though is that when I’m in the Meeting the Asura instance I get the error message that says “this is not your instance, you won’t get credit for progressing the instance” a lot.
This sounds promising, I’ll have to get more time to try and follow it with that route.
A long term fix is being worked on for this, but due to the seriousness of the rewards being given incorrectly it was determined that temporarily disabling the rewards was preferable to them being exploited.
What this means about the eventual “real” fix is that it has to be done and tested out to be sure that it is working appropriately again. It’s unfortunately not a simple fix (read: needs a lot of development time) that we can push out quickly.
Thanks for the update. Curious as to why you cannot reproduce some on your personal accounts.
If we end up getting a fix for this soon that would be spectacular.
Yo me too! Nothing is more frustrating than not being able to reproduce a bug that is obviously happening to multiple players. I have had multiple testers on this for months, something like 40+ hours or more.
We know about this bug and there is a fix coming for it “soon”… now while I can’t give a real date in the event our fix fails to fully address the issue, I don’t want you to bash your head against the wall here on this in frustration.
I don’t really like to post unless I can include a “soon” for a fix… but this issue is actually quite large and difficult to solve quickly. I don’t want you all to think that it’s being ignored, and once I or anyone replies in one of these threads it generates a lot of buzz and the last thing I want to do is be a debbie downer or promise (or even hint at!) something happening soon that is actually on a long time scale for fix/implementation.
I bring this bug specifically up with our producer for gameplay programming every month or so when this topic heats up again, and it’s been explained as a rather large rewrite that’s needed to fix it. They want to fix it too (and they find it just as annoying), but it unfortunately is the kind of fix has to be scheduled out and planned for. Think of this as similar to the fix we have coming for personal story. It’s a lot of work, and they want it done right.
Yeah I can’t really give dates other than “soon” because then the pitchforks will come out if something happens on the way to getting the fix out to live… “soon” will have to do.
QA has been looking at these for a long time, for a few months and since this thread was new actually, and our major problem is that we just don’t get them to reproduce on our internal environments… or for our personal accounts on live.
Unforgiving Infiltration – We repro’d this one and we should expect a fix “soon”
Dancer in the Dark/No Refuge/World Summit – We’re no repro on these, and it’s difficult with the thread merges for my guys to find out if these are still problems or there’s another step we’re missing. If you are still not getting these challenge motes any additional information (did you skip around in the story, etc?) you have would be really valuable.
Our OAuth2 implementation avoids a lot of the bad parts of OAuth2 by simply not supporting them, but it was determined that due to the real monetary value of accounts ArenaNet isn’t comfortable with the core phishing problems that affect any system like OAuth.
Auth is still a possible, in that you can still verify that a user has a valid GW2 account by having them create an API key and enter it. It’s just significantly more annoying. A password manager that can autofill would be the best user experience possible in this new authentication scheme.
Here is an in-game mail that people are receiving. This one was translated from French, but we know it’s appearing in multiple languages:
Hello <player>,
We are sorry to inform you that your account will be closed or partially limited in 72 hours because of a monetary transaction. If you want to remove this restriction, click on the following link:
<non-clickable link to phishing website>
Keep at heart that Guild Wars 2 is a global game with thousands of players. It means a certain standard of behavior must be respected.
GM <fake GM name>
Even if they use a GM name that you know to be real, do not go to that site, and do not provide any account information — this is utterly fake.
It looks like a large number of users seem to be falling for phishing scams, not only out of game but also in game.
Here are a couple of tips to identify phishing scams:
- We will NEVER include a website address in an in-game mail
- We will NEVER contact about an account action until after it has happened
- We will NEVER ask you for your billing or personal information unless you have already contacted our Customer Support team (contact will never be initiated by us for these issues)
- We will NEVER contact you from a non ArenaNet account. This means that you will ALWAYS see an ArenaNet logo on the in game mails that we send. ANY in game mail claiming to come from ArenaNet or the Guild Wars 2 team that does not have this logo WILL have a note at the bottom stating that it did not come from us.
If you have provided your credit card information, date of birth, billing address, or any other personal information to a phishing scam, we suggest that you contact your financial institutions and let them know that your information has been compromised.
Ultimately it is your responsibility to keep your account and personal information safe.
There is a simple motto to follow: “When in doubt, don’t fill it out.”

The WvW matchups are isolated right now but it’s only for our convenience in analyzing performance. Because of the way Megaservers works it doesn’t really matter in terms of CPU load.
BTW, the ping number we show in the client on the options screen is probably different than you see in other games. We should name it something different. Traditionally the ping time is the time it takes for a packet to get to a server and back. In our case, it is the time to get to the server, get processed by the game map you are in, and then sent back. So our misnamed “ping” is much more variable than most ping numbers because it includes game processing time.
One thing I have noticed is that sometimes people (including me) will adjust their graphics settings and not realize they have made permanent changes This is because the game continues to draw existing characters at the old setting and only new characters get the new higher (and potentially slower) setting. Then they map travel and suddenly the game is slower because all of the characters (players and NPCs) have been loaded at the new, higher graphics level setting. But it’s not obvious that the earlier setting change caused things to run slower later. We could “fix” this by doing a big graphics refresh every time you change a setting. That might annoy players but eliminate this problem. -prefereset will also ‘fix’ this problem by resetting your graphics settings which might be what you experienced.
We’ve seen today more PvP activity than ever and that caused some friction on our servers. We’ve deployed a fix soon after discovering what was wrong, but the previous issue might have put some of you in a weird state which prevents you from getting in queue correctly.
The symptom of that state is that you’ll see an “Exit the PvP lobby” button next to an “Unranked arena” queue panel with no other information on it.
For now, I believe that this state can be resolved by disconnecting (entirely closing the client) for at least 10 minutes. Doing so clears up some internal state bound to your account, and should allow you to re-enter queue.
I’m still investigating, so please let me know if this didn’t help!
So sorry. The Complete Pack had an issue that required us to disable it from the store. Please check back later and it will be made available again. It will be offered again as soon as possible.
I updated the Update Notes to strikethrough the note about the Living World Season 2 Complete Pack, and added a note about the issue.
The Living World Season 2 Complete Pack has been temporarily removed from the store while we address some technical issues
The Complete Package will be added back just as soon as possible!
Note: You can continue to purchase individual episodes, but you will not get a discount. If you wish to get the discount, please check back a bit later.
Yes, I’m double-posting here and in GW2 Discussion, but I think this merits it!
Our HR team just sent over a pretty cool opportunity. If you’d like to become a (local, Seattle/Bellevue area) playtester for ArenaNet, please head over to this page and fill out the survey.

Updated the way that crafting-discipline tooltips display on materials and recipe-unlock items.
Active disciplines will be displayed in white, while inactive disciplines will be grayed out.
For each discipline, the required rating number will be displayed in green if the player’s crafting skill meets that rating or in red if the player’s skill is below the required rating.
Fixed a bug in which the Mad Scientist’s Harvesting Tool caused a frost effect behind players.
Fixed a bug with Ranger pet passive states.

This isn’t “good enough”. My focus has shifted temporarily to the Stronghold open beta for sPvP tomorrow. But even so I and other programmers have been looking at source code searching for reasons why some people standing right next to each other have lag and some don’t. Right now that’s the big mystery. As programmers we don’t like it when performance is inconsistent; if it was always lagging for everyone it would be easier to debug but alas that is not the case.
Since the “Applications” tab is now visible in the account settings, is the OAuth implementation now considered “stable” or are we still in “beta”?
Beta. We may actually be transitioning away from OAuth2 to an API key style system; I’ll keep you updated as we figure out stuff :|
OAuth2 is working well for me.
If you transition, does that mean the 500+ people who have signed in through my app so far will have to re-authorize through some other method? Preferably you could continue to support both methods?
We haven’t figured out a timeline or migration strategy for existing applications yet, but it’s definitely possible that all your users will have to re-authorize. I know this is a big deal and a massive pain, and for that I apologize. I’ll keep you updated on our current status.
When you say camera position reseting, what are you talking about? Are you talking about the zoom level reseting, a particular setting resetting, the angle? What is the behavior that you are seeing?
This was a lot of fun – was able to play with a mix of new and experienced players. We ended up making it into the fourth round or so, knocked into loser’s by Wakkey’s team and eliminated inloser’s by Phanta’s team.
I believe asuran hydro-engineers are currently investigating this issue. Something having to do with the migration pattern of the Mystic salmon (which makes its way up the fabric of reality each year, as you probably know).
Thankfully, as you’ve seen, despite its invisibility, the water supply still exists, so there’s no risk of drought. For now.
