All the names are not shamable , people on the screenshot are getting killed by the (invisble) hacker. The screenshot is about the logs. As I have said in the text above the player is invisble can t be targeted and will read out as unkown.

Ok, “can’t be targeted” leads me to believe you cannot select, even if you just randomly poke around the map trying to locate the player. Correct?

Hi Arenanet,

Why is this hacker on the Far Shiverpeaks (eu) server not taken down?
People are mass reporting him, but still he isn t banned?
WHY?

I would love to hear your respond on this.

Screenshot shows he is called in the logs as Unkown and is perma stealthed.

Question: Are you able to find this player and select in order to report in the game? The reason I ask is that reports from the game go instantly to our team of report reviewers, giving them game info that may enable them to actually see this player. So again, are you able to report at all through the in-game mechanism? (Once I know if it is possible, I can alert our observers to watch for such reports.)

Thread explosion! Thanks for all the (rapid) responses. There seems to be a fairly consistent feeling that yes, these fights can be more engaging without becoming as difficult as the jungle wurm.

I like some of the ideas being presented, feel free to keep the discussion going. It’s also helpful to hear not only what’s working but why it’s working for you.

On the topic of using siege weapons as a role mechanic in these fights, is that something we want to see more of? I often worry that siege weapons can be just as boring as standing in the safe corner pressing the same attack. Do you feel that they can also cause some contention between players?

I appreciate the information provided in this thread about security issues, and how to better secure one’s account. Thank all of you for your positive input.

As for the questions about multiple hacks, let’s consider: Once your e-mail is hacked, you’re in a whole world of hurt, and yes, that hacking may give the hacker all the information he/she needs to try to claim your account. I am right now writing a policy and practice e-mail to our CS Manager to address the concerns expressed in this thread. (Quotes, liberal use of highlights, and suggestions ensue!)

But because I see quite a lot of finger-pointing, and some denial of ownership of an issue that, generally, is outside our control, I feel it’s best to close this thread. I hope you understand this is not “brushing a problem under the carpet” but instead is gleaning valuable input, researching ways to use that input, and yet not letting the forums become a flashpoint for accusation and misinformation.

Moved from one Orders story to another

It doesn’t change your order—just your storyline.

The story splits at different points for various reasons that aren’t necessarily related to your Order. For example, in Chapter 1 human commoners can choose whether to save an orphanage or a hospital. That’s why the warning is fairly generic—it warns you that you’re accepting any choices made by the other player, and what your next story step will be. There’s no way for it to know what your choice might have been, since the next story step might be based on a choice made in this or another story step, the player’s Order, etc. It simply knows what the story owner’s next step is, and if you accept progress, that will also be your next step. (To keep you playing together.)

I would only ask that there be some disambiguation from the yellow/gold message that we see in Squad messages.

Despite my desire to remove the non-commander commanders from the game, It would be all far too easy for someone to see a commander tag, join their squad, then send a squad message along the lines of “You have received an infraction for…”.

This is an excellent point. I will look into the colors, but I’m told they are substantially different.

I’d also like to say that someone sending that sort of message would be guilty of impersonation of an ArenaNet employee, a serious offense. I just responded to a ticket yesterday where someone was sending those sorts of fake messages, so yes, sadly, people are foolish enough to pull that sort of nonsense. (He argued. I pointed out that saying “We will terminate your account” is definitely and positively impersonation, particularly coupled with a name that is intended to imply official status. ~rolls eyes at silliness~)

If you believe someone has impersonated an ArenaNet staff member, report it immediately. Select the player and, because we don’t have an “impersonation” option in our in-game report system, choose “offensive chat.” If you’re really concerned about it, submit a ticket with the exact name of the impersonator, the map, the time and your time zone, and the date.

Impersonation is a very serious infraction, and we’ll take swift and direct action on those who do it. I would hope that our players are intelligent enough to believe that it would not be worth risking their entire game history and their account, in perpetuity, in order to get a few random giggles from a fake message. If they fail to realize that, they soon will.

However, on the serious side, I should reiterate that the warnings will come in private chat (whispers) and will not be visible to others. So this is a confidential system that warns, without sending any sort of public message, verbal or visual.

I say we go to Godslost swam and try to devise a ritual to bring him back. It’s unlikely he ever got destroyed, but just sealed, as you can’t kill ‘death itself’. Now that Zhaitan has been defeated, Death-attuned magic is not being constantly sucked anymore out of the ambient and so it should be possible to strengthen entities attuned to it like Dhuum or Grenth. Once we have the ritual, we wait until Halloween when the borders between Tyria and the Mists are weker and boon: Ban-scyther.

It seems you possess a very particular set of skills…

Anyway, can you please clarify for me- offensive chat?

We all slip occasionally, dropping a s- or f-. Is this okay as long as it isn’t malicious, excessive, or discriminatory?

Hmmm… It seems that anything I say here might be taken as an Outline for How to Get By With Swearing.

But in the spirit in which the question was asked, and in a general sense, we are all gamers, and we all understand the occasional “slip of the tongue.” Dropping a Naughty Word Bomb can be overlooked from time to time, it all depends on the circumstances, whether it was targeted or not, and exactly what was said.

Clearly, “Oh #(*%^, we lost” is entirely different than “You are a #*% @)%$&-ing @O%&(^.” Not just because of the increase in words, but because it’s directed at an individual.

My best suggestion: Think before speaking. It’s really that simple. If you can’t say it at work, in school, or around your sainted Aunt Bessie, you should resist saying it public channels. And to predict the question, yes, we’re more lenient in what is said in Guild Chat, as long as those listening are ok with it and do not report it. Reported offensive chat via any in-game medium is reviewed and has the potential for being acted upon.

Hope that information helps.

How detailed will these warnings be? Will it be more like “you need to stop what you are doing.” or more like "At ##:## you started “doing such” and is in violation due to “such rule”, or somewhere in between?

Will we be able to respond to the GM’s comment, assuming we are polite and courteous?

Let’s face it. If you’re engaging in a disallowed activity, you know it. So the message may be specific or it may be a little more generic, but in the end, we believe it’s a kindness to let you know “You’re doing something right now that needs to stop.” (As far as I know, the warnings will not come later, they’ll be at the time of the disallowed activity.)

No, you may not enter into a dialogue with the GM. You may, of course, contact Customer Support, which is what the message will direct you to do if you have questions.

Hopefully, players will be smart enough to recognize what they were doing and not try to engage in a huge exchange defending their misbehavior or arguing against a friendly warning. We have a lot of players with legitimate issues we’d like to help, rather than trying to quell a “No, i didn’t do it” or “But is that precisely wrong, or is it your fault?” sorts of discussions.

Any chance of having this policy enforced retroactively? I know I’ve got a couple friends whose accounts were terminated for the 2012 snowflake incident and they never got a warning/temporary suspension =(

None whatsoever. To go back and review thousands of suspensions to determine if they would have received a warning at the time, coupled with the impossibility of knowing if the warned player would have stopped the exploitative action takes such a retroactive review off the table completely.

No worries, we don’t rely on screenshots. We have a trump card: game logs, and they cannot be altered or fudged for personal reasons by someone trying to grief another player.

I’m wondering Gaile, what does the game logs consist? Replayable footage of an instance? Message, combat log? Other information on written form? I’m just curious : 3

I think it would be best for me to decline to get into specifics on this subject. Suffice to say, we know your shoe size.

Do you guys think that there’s a middle ground between ultra hard and easy?

For example, I think we could clean up some of the issues with the Shatterer and just make it a more engaging experience. So rather than spending the entire fight hiding under his right paw he could, say, turn his head and attack that area? :] It doesn’t have to be hard, just a little more involved.

We tried to put in a few changes here and there when we added the new world boss timers. Reactions varied.

I totally forgot, but this thread reminded me – There actually is a series of scenes depicting a fahrar being given lessons about some basics of charr history and culture. I believe it starts outside the Command Core, meanders over to the Stormcaller monument, and then goes up through the three levels to Smodur’s office. It’s been a while since I worked on it, but that was definitely also designed to capture the “tour the city” feel.

Quick question: These golden whispers will they be blocked from players view if the chat box settings are on don’t show whispers and game messages or are they considered something else?
I don’t plan on ever getting one hopefully but i would still like to know.

If someone has turned off whispers, then I believe that player will not get the warning. This is the player’s choice, of course. We will not make a different or additional effort to contact the player. Again, the warning is a courtesy, and whether (1) a player puts her- or himself in a situation that earns a warning, and (2) blocks whispers, is entirely the choice of the player.

May I humbly suggest you consider some sort of screen print message in large font and some godly thunder / reverb.

That some may be turned from their wicked ways and resume the path of righteousness – or at least harmlessness.

I could have SO much fun with this! For instance, I totally want to record a “Turn away from the Dark Side” message. Or maybe “This is a warning. Go forth and sin no more.” Or “You are standing on the edge of an abyss. Step away! Take the path of non-cheatiness!!”

Ok, I should stop now.

Hello everyone!

My in game warrior character is “Isis Linea”. Today, someone in the lion’s arch misunderstood the name Isis and was thinking that refers to that recently “bad organization” and i want to prevent you and people of Arena Net from this misunderstanding. The name “Isis” is responding to the goddess in Ancient Egypt, goddess of health, marriage and love. I like this name so much and don’t want people getting confused. If that not helps, tell me please to change that name to something else cause i don’t want to get banned with this little misunderstanding even if that means i have to pay 800 gems for changing my character’s name. Thank you. Have a nice day!

PS: Source “Isis”: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isis

Hi there. It’s sad that such a nice name is currently a little on the touchy side. But we would not censor that name, and if an agent accidentally did so, we’d uncensor it and allow its use. “Isis” is different than “ISIS” and we can certainly appreciate that distinction.

Thank you for the courtesy of this inquiry.

I really want one of those Bows :-)

Sorry, it’s mine all mine and I’m not sharin’!

I’d heavily advise the GMs to take pictures of the incident BEFORE the whisper. It’s amazing how someone’s actions/attitude will change when a GM whispers them. This is just so that if the person in question goes to a social media page and tries to start drama, the GM’s/Anet have a picture of what they were doing wrong before they were contacted.

No worries, we don’t rely on screenshots. We have a trump card: game logs, and they cannot be altered or fudged for personal reasons by someone trying to grief another player.

On a serious note, nice to see this happening

I think so, too!

Will the whispers be recorded internally, amassing marks (as you state it)?

For example, I do something stupid and GM Bob whispers me saying “oi, knock it off.” I stop, then return the next day or the next week and start doing the same something stupid again. Will GM Suzy know that GM Bob already warned me about it?

(disclaimer: Any resemblance to actual GM names is purely coincidental and unintentional)

We’re not giving warnings for chat violations, but yes, chat reports are amassed and over time can impact one’s account. We will keep account notes for instances when a warning is given for other sorts of infractions, so yes, our fictional Suzy and Bob will know the account’s history.

I had initially thought I’d want to lock this thread. At this point, I’ll leave it open. However, here are some guidelines:

 • We’re not going to say “this infraction will get a warning” and “that infraction will earn a suspension.” Please don’t ask that.
 • We’re not going to get into a philosophical discussion about “If you’re warning about XYZ, then you are required to warn about ABC.” Just… don’t go there because any form of warning is a kindness, not a requirement.
 • Any mention of “Freedom of Speech” or your other constitutional rights, or a citation of legal action, will be smote with my Bow of the Mighty Slaughtering of Fools. But then, I always have that bow at the ready.

In the past, we’ve made it clear that GMs (aka Customer Support agents) would not send players in-game warnings. Today, we’re going to start giving warnings in specific cases. This will not involve a lot of hand-holding, “second chances,” and do-overs. But please note this important information:

If you get a whisper in gold text, pay heed. This is a official warning and you need to immediately rethink what you’re doing. Once warned, if you continue what you’re doing, you risk an account suspension, even an account termination.

This new policy does not imply that everyone will get a warning. If you use offensive chat, you will be suspended or amass another mark towards suspension. If you cheat, your account is headed on a one-way trip to Termination Territory. But for certain infractions, we’re going to try warnings to see if we can “pull players away from the abyss” and allow them to continue playing our game.

Thanks for all your comments, everyone!

I’ve been checking in on this thread pretty regularly and I appreciate the thoughtful discussions. I wish I had time to reply to everything but it’s a busy day and the thread is growing larger so as a quick alternative I’ll throw out some potential takeaway points to summarize the discussion:

 • The reward structure in Dry Top is desirable for many people. But Dry Top lacks some favorable elements from earlier open world maps such as chaining or random events. My thought here is that one does not exclude the other and in the future we could incorporate both the best of both designs.
 • Some people would like to an option repeat hearts. Many people are opposed to being required to repeat hearts which is probably enough reason not to require it. In the future we ought to consider repeat rewards or even a prestige system for voluntarily replaying one-time content.
 • Karma may be an underwhelming common event currency. Many people would like to see it applied towards a greater variety of personal reward goals such as crafting materials, more skins, etc. People seem favorable to region specific rewards, but at some point we have to reconcile the notion that it would probably further devaluate karma. I would also like to submit that karma has another issue which is that whenever you purchase something you are setting back your progress towards other purchases. Of course, that’s a fundamental aspect of currency and yet, it’s less intrinsically rewarding than gold because you can use gold to make more gold (gear upgrades, crafting, trading, etc). At the level 80 end especially, big karma sinks are largely cosmetic and will not help you earn more karma. Personally, I feel that effective reward systems regularly disperse rewards along the path to a longer term goal. (If you haven’t checked out PvP Reward Tracks, you should!)

Lastly this:

@AnthonyOrdon.3926: How hard is it to create dynamic events? I thought to remember an article back at release that your systems allowed to create new events in a short time.

Good question! The answer: it depends. Largely on the complexity of the event and the experience level of the event designer. I can create a very simple event very quickly. Things such as interesting characters, voiced scenes, event criers, new mechanics, new items, finely tuned scaling, new bosses, new boss abilities, world impact, and chained events are examples of things that will give an event higher implementation cost. Some events feature none of those and some are all of the above. Complexity is also deceptively difficult to perceive. Clockwork Invasions, for example, appear to be many, many events but conceptually they were just one very large event, which is much less expensive. When I implemented those, I deliberately sacrificed depth to achieve breadth. In retrospect, a little more depth was definitely in order. But we were able to create what was more or less a brand new experience and we have those lessons to apply if we revisit the concept in the future (which I intend to do, at the right place and time).

But in specific regard to this thread, your question asks the possibility: could we keep maps fresh by adding tons and tons of events? In my experience, a large complexity factor in event implementation is other events. Any time an event is placed near another, we have to at least consider how they will interact. There’s one interaction between two events, two between three, five between four, nine between five, and so on. Returns definitely diminish. Over time we’ve come up with some effective techniques and patterns to mitigate this, but the cost is greater than zero.

Clearly I’m willing to ramble over this, so maybe someday we should have a thread on event complexity vs fun vs replayability. ;]

Guild Wars 2 Narrative Lead

I’d rather not see that, to be honest.

These tour guides give humans part of that sense of knowing their history and heritage that the other races don’t show. The other major cities do have a number of NPCs that give a history of the place or the race, but they’re not nearly as showing off the good work. The only way to improve the tours was to make them occur constantly – without player triggering – so that they become more obvious.

This is why in my post above, I only listed the bigger human settlements, because it feels like a good way to give something that humans have going for them, that the other races cannot do the same or better at.

If tour guides were added to other races’ capitals, the only thing I ask is that they’re human historians and scholars so as to show that humanity even has the history of the lands of other races – and even the history of those races, whether or not the other races have them too. There is a need to cease the dropping of human standing in GW2, as we’ve seen them with very little going for them.

If they weren’t presented as tours for other racial cities but instead shown with characters walking and talking about their surroundings (perhaps independent of player participation) it could get the information across while also differentiating the feel of the different races. Thoughts?

Completely Pointless Revamps?

All those changes are important because they fix the several flaws that GW2 has early game: the lack of a sense of progression, poor tutorials, directionless, forgottable rewards and jumpy story instances that forced you to level up midway, interrupting the flow of the story.

So far, this feature patch is great for new players, but, what about the veteran players? It doesn’t seems to offer much to make us stick to the game.

More information will be released next week about features that are more suited to veteran players.

Anyway good job developers, who will probably not read this, you are the only part of staff I appreciate.

Awwww. I’m sad! (I will make sure that they read it.)

A quick thanks to all of you who took a moment to let us know that things were working smoothly!

The Feature Pack announcements will continue next week and some of them will definitely contain information that’s relevant to those of you who’ve been playing the game for long. We won’t tell you about them until the articles are live though, to keep the element of surprise!

Does the class loot change affect lvl 80s?

Yes it does. I’ll point to the answer posted here and will take this opportunity to remind you to post in relevant threads, rather than create a new one. It’s a bit more difficult, including for players, to navigate through a sea of threads, some of which as asking the same questions. Thanks for your understanding!

Firstly I want to thank all of you for very clear and well thought out constructive feedback it is always a pleasure interacting with players.

Secondly I would like to reiterate that me posting on this thread does not mean that changes to the camera will or will not happen either now or in the future of GW2 development. Please assume everything in this post is purely hypothetical.

Thirdly I’d like to focus this thread onto a single possible feature for the camera at a time so we can talk about it, discuss technical limitations, and potential solutions to these limitations. Feel free to silently judge those who post before reading everything else discussed so far. :P

So, for the first feature to discuss let’s start with the ‘smart pivot.’ I have chosen this one first as it is one of the more technically challenging features, and seems like it would interesting to talk about.

Currently when you look up the camera slides along the ground towards your character which gives you a very limited field of view (really noticable when attacking enemies on walls in WvW).

I would like an option to always keep the camera at the same distance, so when the camera touches the ground it starts pivoting on the contact point instead of the character (in other games usually know as “Smart Pivot”).

I made a quick sketch to visualize what I mean:

So for the first technical challenge, how could we get this to work when the camera doesn’t know what ‘ground’ is.

Do the new changes mean I can’t do WvW until I level to 18? What’s with all these restrictions?

That’s not exactly what’s happening. If you have a brand new account, you will only be able to use the PvP and WvW icons after your first character has unlocked them for your account. After that, it’ll pretty much be the same!

Again, this change will be mostly relevant to new players who will not have to think about that part of the game until they’ve been able to learn the basics. If they’re specifically interested in those part of the game, they can still travel to the relevant portal and jump into the fray!

Does this mean that it will affect level 80s?

Yes it will but the change will not be easily noticeable.

CDI topics does not mention dungeon....

If a part of the game you care about (not just dungeons, but generally as well) is not part of a CDI discussion, this doesn’t mean that the developers will not listen to or accept feedback outside the CDI. This is really important to remember, because I think the CDI has been raised up to a rarefied level in the minds of some members of the community, and people might feel that no one will listen unless a thread is labeled “CDI.” I just want to make it clear that the CDI is not the team’s only place to listen to you all.

Follow up question: What use is it to make a blog post that only really affects people who don’t yet play the game?

Hi Puddles,

First of all, we at ArenaNet very much appreciate the support that all players that have played the game for so long have given us. Without you guys, your love of the game and how you spread the word around you, things would clearly not be the same.

Today’s blogpost about the New Player Experience will not have as many visible effects to you specifically as it would have for a brand new player, that knows very little about the game. The new direction system should help you get a clearer and more useful top-tight UI, but also give your new characters better rewards.

As you noted, it is mainly targeted at new players, those that need it the most. We want their learning experience to be better so that they, too, can become veteran players of Guild Wars 2 one day! Learning to play a brand new game, and MMOs tend to be more on the more complex side of videogames, can be a daunting and hard task.

We want more people to be able to walk this path you walked and this is why we implemented the New Player Experience system, to create a route that new players can walk and feel rewarded along the way.

Again, thanks for your support!

ArenaNet, can you please answer this:
I currently have some alts which are not level 80. Will these changes affect my alts too, or do I need to remake them to get the changes (just like the Trait change)? I’d rather have my alts be grandfathered into these changes than having to remake them.

Yes these changes will be effective for all existing characters.

I keep reading this part does this mean traits will be unlocked when you level now or do we still have to do the chores.

Regarding unlocking traits, the New Player Experience will effectively be exactly the same, except in the way it’s presented to players.

Hi everyone,

The article about profession system only presented the idea behind this system and we generally don’t give precise details about these systems unless these details are needed to understand the idea. In this case we can’t share details but we want to reassure players that they’re not going to see changes in loot so visible that some components are going to “rain” or they’ll stop seeing loot variety. It’s more complex than that.

The adjustments to the loot system are fairly subtle and the goals are that, after a certain time, your characters will effectively have more components you can use. So it may take some time for you to see a difference, or not, but it’s not going to feel like a very visible change each time you loot a mob. We want players, in particular new ones or those creating alts, to more often be able to use the items they loot directly or get something that is relevant to their profession. It does not mean that you’ll get less varied loot overall. We’ll keep monitoring the changes to kitten its affects.

Thanks for your early feedback!
