I don’t want to be told the details, I want the details to come out during the course of the story, rather than in a big info dump at the end. Might you tell us what you feel we’ve learned from the living story thus far?

Totally understood. It’s something that I think we’re getting better at as time goes on, but I agree that we were slow to connect the dots earlier in the season. One thing that we learned was that there are players who do appreciate story instances and character moments, and that we need to work harder to get them in the game so that people can better understand the story and care about the characters. We unfortunately let a few of them slip through the cracks and as a result it’s made the story appear fragmented.

There is good writing and there is we put this in to cater to the XYZ crowd, but its all irrelevant as we should not be mixing moster slaying with silly and pointless real life crusades.

A few things here:

  • We didn’t put this in to cater to anyone. We’re just trying to tell a good story.
  • No crusade going on here.
  • Interesting characters and character moments make for a better experience overall. We’re not doing it at the expense of putting other things in the game.

What people don’t understand is that we wrote and voiced a lot of these moments throughout the year. Some scenes and story instances were cut or never implemented in the final releases, which is why this particular story instance was longer than the typical one and filled with lots of exposition.

And that’s why you create good stories. Shame that you have to explain the basics of good storytelling because most people feel offended at every little thing going on.

I think it’s just that different players have different expectations. Some play the game solely for gameplay or loot, others for the art, some for the story. We’re never going to please everyone (and we’re not trying to) but I think if we’re a little clearer in messaging our intentions then folks might be able to process it a bit better. In terms of the story bits, we’re not “checking off boxes” or hitting some mysterious quota. We’re just trying to breathe some life into our characters. If it resonates with people, then we’re happy. If not, then it means we try something different.

A lot of the themes and character moments we explored in this past season’s Living World story were new to us. Now that we’re refining our writing and delivery a bit better, we’re working even harder to get those bits into the game. If anything, I am happy that people are discussing the characters and themes in a (mostly) respectful manner.

We have to piece it together, there’s almost nothing to go on. Everything’s going to be revealed at the end. So why don’t we just skip to the last chapter, and read the wrap up?

That’s not really true. There’s a lot of information in the game, but it’s been spread across multiple releases. If anything, the theorycrafting on Scarlet that I’ve seen on these forums and on Reddit are fantastic. We’re lucky to have a really smart fanbase that is connecting the dots. That’s not to say everyone is right—there’s probably one accurate guess out of a thousand. We want to get people talking and guessing.

But to answer your question, if you’d rather be told the details, they will be revealed by the end of the season. I can’t say when or how. This is a spoiler-free zone.

Always ignore those emails. I get them all the time from Blizzard for WoW, Diablo, StarCraft… from Anet for GW2, from other gaming devs for games like Everquest, yet most of those games i don’t play.

If u get an email like that, NEVER follow the given links, simply log onto ur account how u normal would to check its status, if its normal then you know the email is fake.

Yes, that’s exactly right, eleshazar. Thanks for sharing a story that clearly shows how challenging it is to resolve these issues to everyone’s satisfaction, when, again, the matter of “griefing” can be so subjective!

Again, we’re going to see if we can improve the manner in which we are able to review and potentially resolve such issues. It won’t be “New Flash: Griefers Gone from GW2!” but we’ll see if we can’t remove more of the true griefers — for the greater good!

Profession Changes

Elementalist:
Our changes for the elementalist focus on increasing sustain while maintaining the delicate balance between damage and durability. We achieved this by adding more defensive effects to a few main-hand weapon sets.

  • Signet of Restoration: Removed the split on this skill so that the signet passive heal amount will be increased in PvP to match the current PvE amount.
  • Armor of Earth: Reduced recharge from 90 seconds to 75 seconds.
  • Water Trident: Added 3 seconds of regeneration to up to 5 allies in the radius.
  • Burning Speed: This ability now evades attacks.
  • Frozen Burst: This ability is now a blast finisher.

Engineer:
We feel that the engineer is in a decent place right now, but we did take this opportunity to scale down a few outlier skills in terms of potency. Net Turret’s immobilize duration has been lowered to reduce the amount of lockdown after a Supply Crate drop, and Poison Grenade’s poison duration has been lowered to account for poison field stacking.

  • Net Turret: Decreased the immobilize duration from 3 seconds to 2 seconds on the basic attack.
  • Poison Grenade: Reduced the poison duration per pulse from 5 seconds to 3 seconds.
  • Box of Nails: Reduced the cast time from 1 second to 3/4 second.
  • Box of Piranhas: Reduced the cast time from 1 second to 3/4 second.
  • A.E.D.: Reduced the cast time from 1 second to 3/4 second.

Guardian:
We’re continuing to lower the amount of vigor available to all professions, especially from sources with low trait point investments. We’ve also made a few minor adjustments to healing skills to make them more reliable.

  • Litany of Wrath: Reduced the cast time from 1 second to 3/4 second.
  • Vigorous Precision: Increased the recharge from 5 seconds to 10 seconds.
  • Healing Breeze: This ability has been re-scaled so that the guardian receives 50% of the heal near the start of the heal and then heals for 10% for 5 ticks to the caster and up to 5 allies in the cone.

Mesmer:
We’re continuing to lower the amount of vigor available to all professions, especially from sources with low trait point investments. Based on your feedback, we decided to revert our proposed change to Deceptive Evasion.

  • Critical Infusion: Increased the recharge from 5 seconds to 10 seconds.
  • Illusion of Drowning: Changed skill from a multi-hit to a single-hit, increasing damage to compensate.

Necromancer:
One of our goals with the past few balance updates has been to add counterplay to various skills that lacked telegraphs. With necromancer, we’re changing the way that Dhuumfire is activated – allowing players the opportunity to react. This will also allow the necromancer to carefully plan their burning application. We’ve also adjusted some values for Minion Master builds based on player feedback.

  • Putrid Explosion: This ability is no longer unblockable.
  • Training of the Master: Reduced the damage increase to minions from 30% to 25%.
  • Dhuumfire: This trait has been changed so that it will make Life Blast inflict 3 seconds of burning with a 10 second recharge.
  • Vampiric Master: Reduced the effectiveness of this trait by 10%. The healing portion of this trait will now scale with the necromancer’s healing power stat.

Ranger:
We’re going to be fixing a bug with Spirit of Nature that caused it to have an incorrect healing power value. We’re also looking at adding combo fields to existing abilities to allow for more play through different combo finishers.

  • Spirit of Nature: Reduced the healing per second while summoned from 480 to 320.
  • Viper’s Nest: This ability is now a poison combo field.
  • (Added) Keen Edge: This trait is now classified as a Survival Skill.

Thief:
Much like the engineer, we wanted to take this opportunity to tone-down excessive poison stacking through poison fields.

  • Choking Gas: Reduced the poison per pulse from 5 seconds to 3 seconds.

Warrior:
Our changes for warrior focus on providing telegraphs to stronger skills and to reduce the passive benefit gained from Healing Signet.

  • Healing Signet: Reduced the passive heal by 8%.
    • We’re looking for ways to incentivize using Healing Signet’s active without increasing overall sustain. We’d love to hear your thoughts on this.
  • Pin Down: Added a telegraph animation to the skill. Increased the cast time from 1/4 second to 3/4 second.

Hey all,

As promised, here is the balance preview for the first feature build that will launch after the first Living World season ends. When reading through these changes please keep in mind the overall scope of the update – rune/sigil and critical damage changes included. The changes listed below are similar to what was mentioned on Ready Up on January 17th.

Edit:
Most of these notes are simply a summary of what was discussed in the previous Ready Up stream, with a few tweaks based on feedback. This list of changes does not encompass all changes that will occur in the next feature build. We’ve got quite a few more things coming, but are unable to talk about them at this time. Soon.

When posting feedback, please try to abide by the following guidelines:

Be constructive. Discuss, don’t argue. If you think a change may cause issues, say why and give examples. Try not to argue with others – make your point and then accept that other people may have different points of view.
Give examples: I had 2000 toughness but still got hit by X target for roughly Y damage.
Be concise. Our time is limited and we can’t read walls of text because it will prevent us from having the time to read as many posts as possible. Bullet points or numbered lists are very easy for us to read!
Be specific. “I expect this change to accomplish A, but I think it will actually accomplish B”. The more specific you are, the better we are able to understand where you’re coming from, what type of content you play, and it helps us to understand the context for your feedback.
Be objective. Keep in mind that just because you may not like something, that doesn’t make it bad. Others may have differing opinions. They may play a different type of content, or they may play a different profession, so be objective and keep in mind – we have to balance the game for EVERYONE, not just you.
Be respectful. This goes for your fellow community members as well as for devs. Respect the ideas and opinions of others.
Be mindful of scope. It takes design, development and testing time in order to make a new feature or revise an old one. Keep scope/work/time/resources in mind when you make your suggestions.
Be mindful of context. Power creep is something we’re trying to avoid. Sometimes a profession may not receive as many increases as other classes. A lot of times, this is because that class is already performing very well in the current state of the game. So keep the overall context/state of the game in mind when giving feedback.

Critical Damage:

  • We’re adding a new stat to the game called ferocity which affects your critical damage multiplier, similarly to how precision affects critical chance.
  • All existing percentage critical damage stats on gear and items will be converted into the appropriate amount of ferocity, which will then factor into your critical damage multiplier.
  • We expect that in the most extreme power DPS focused builds this change will account for a maximum reduction of about 10% damage.
  • This change will not affect PvP, as critical damage is already at a much lower value and item attributes will be adjusted in order to compensate for the changes.

Sigils:

  • All sigils now have independent cooldowns, meaning you can use two on-swap sigils, or an on-swap and an on-crit sigil at the same time. You will not, however, be able to use two sigils of the same name at the same time. On-kill sigils that provide attributes, such as Sigil of Corruption, will not be able to be used simultaneously with other attribute modifying on-kill sigils.
  • Two-handed weapons can now be slotted with two sigils.
  • Sigils will receive a general balance pass to bring them more in line with each other.

Runes:

  • Rune sets will receive a general balance pass to bring them in line with each other. This will increase the amount of viable rune options.
  • The bulk of rune set bonuses will be pushed towards the 4th, 5th, and 6th piece bonuses to incentivize using a complete set.

Hi GrayFox. Thanks for waiting while I discussed this with TS. I know — truly know! — this is a frustrating issue. And the last thing you want to hear is “It’s not us.” However, I learned that the issue does not lie within our service, and the team looked into the matter as recently as yesterday. Their notes:

“From what information we have here, this isn’t something we can resolve because it’s packet loss on a connecting data center, not the Guild Wars 2 server itself. If we could obtain a Ping Plotter report we could at best show the player where it’s coming from visually but even then, we would be referring them to their ISP…”

We once were able to accept attachments. We intend to be able to accept attachments in the future, but that is some time away. (We are, naturally, taking a very conservative course with our new ticket system — implemented last fall — and that has resulted in our disabling attachments until rigorous security measures are in place on the part of the provider.)

But basically, even without those attachments, the team can tell that you are experiencing issues outside our services, and we cannot assist with resolving them.

I apologize again for the unclear responses that you received. We’ll do our best to mitigate that situation for future tickets. In the end, since you seem technically savvy, I’d suggest a discussion with your ISP that involves one of the tech folks reviewing whatever reports they have you run. They may find the issue is not something they can solve, as we did, but that’s the next point of contact (or a repeated point of contact given what we’ve shared here). Due to the nature of their service, I hope the ISP can point to the exact issue and help you resolve it.

Now you must complete this in the most logical way possible:

On April Fool’s you give away meat maces, Braham must wield one for a while.

So, linguistically, I’m going to propose that the prefix “Bra-” signifies “one who likes.”

Oh man, I really hope in 4 months+ time, we forget about this thread, and we’re talking to Braham and he casually mentions he loves ham.

I wonder if Rox likes green eggs?

… why, in a team game, do you have individual Leaderboards?

We have Solo Arena leaderboards because people asked for them. I agree though, but think this will be much less an issue if we decide to have a ladder for individual players.

Why not have teams … play as a registered team

That’s a good idea.

… is something like this already in place?

No, but we do plan to make adjustments after the leaderboards are deprecated.

After all, this is a ladder. Outside factors such as your overall PvP level should not be included.

I agree, and we’re taking that into consideration. Unless we start requiring a full roster for rated play, we need the matchmaker to consider more data when creating/merging rosters. When we do use this extra data, we will likely use it more as a preference rather than a requirement.

The changes that need to be made to matchmaking are to ensure games do not start with a 4v5.

Definitely a priority.

I wanted to stop by and say thanks for the feedback. We do feel that the celestial stat set will be hit the hardest with the upcoming critical damage changes, so we are looking at possibly boosting the overall stats by a small amount.

Also the celestial stat set in PvP is using a much lower stat multipliers than the PvE versions so we will be looking at changing this as well. Nothing is set in stone, but I wanted to let guys know this is something we are discussing.

The PvP celestial set was never viable, so I think you should put it at a power level close or equal to the (possibly buffed) PvE counterpart.

That would be the idea. =)

1) There shouldn’t be a limit, but instead an earlier splitting off of “Hot Topics”.
When you see, that out of the CDI is crystallizing itself a new discussion specificly around 1 made idea/proposal and that discussion raises in its size very quickly to the point, that it draws all the attention out of the original thread’s topic, then open up a new official CDI thread for this Hot Topic.

Example: The Horizontal Progression Thread had basically 2 very big Hot Topics.
Housing and Sub Classes. 8howeve,r the last one already will get later its own topic, so much is already sure)

The original thread would have been much clearer and smaller, if the Devs would have reacted earlier on this way, how the discussion is flowing.
Would they have made for Housing and Sub Classes their own CDI Threads, two very large parts of the discussion would have been shifted over into their own places where people could have discussed further specificly only about these topics.

This would have made the whole discussion for everybody easier to read, without having tons of completely different suggestions and discussions over X other things being mixed together followed later by tons of summary postings so larger the thread became…

2) ANet should choose absolutely. They know best, what of our ideas are even feasible and which not. You can’t say, that we get ignored, if they choose out a topic from a gargantuan list of topics, that we have discussed together

And even if they would choose as next CDI the topic about Mounts, then you would have to accept that! Completely regardless of what you personally think about that topic, if you like it or not. Especially if a topic like this would come out of a Player Voting, this would show even more that behind this topic stat alot of people, which like this feature, when a feature like Mounts would win a Voting (not to mention the constant creation of threads about them would be already more than enough to show anet, that there are already alot of people, who do like them)

1)I like this a lot- we can start with a broad topic like Horizontal Development was and as soon as it becomes more focused split it into separate CDI threads.

They can even be sticked at the top of the main thread

A TL;DR would also be helpful- more so than limiting the word count

2) I like Vol’s idea here were we alternate between player chosen concerns and things the Anet team would like to discuss
Alternatively Anet should just decide what they would like player input on

Regarding:

1)I like this a lot- we can start with a broad topic like Horizontal Development was and as soon as it becomes more focused split it into separate CDI threads.

Would the expectation be that the split topics are parked and then tackled in order or that they are running together. Because if it is the latter then I can say without question that I personally wouldn’t have time to engage appropriately on more than one thread at a time.

1: We need to keep thread and post sizes more manageable. Should we put a limit on the word length of posts?

Pick narrower topics. “Horizontal vs. Vertical Progression” is almost as broad as you can get. When you pick broad topics like this it eats up developer time and poster time just trying to catch up with the thread and it discourages posters from posting.
Also, you’re getting feedback from a narrower group of people who have the time to read the posts and get caught up, and also who post actively (hence making the thread longer and contributing to the problem).

1: More Focused Topics! (Done!)

I would argue this wasn’t accomplished the Horizontal/Vertical progression threads. You changed the community chosen subject —Ascended Gear-- to progression in general.

As a note. The two topics were separate and discussed as separate entities.

Chris, even more so than the two elements you’ve presented, I feel the CDI could benefit from being isolated from the forums.

The limited structure of the forums is not very conducive to large roundtable discussion amongst a large group of people. Even more importantly, it’s not ideal when a sub-topic arises or the focus of the conversation changes between parties.

For the long-term growth of the CDI, perhaps something like a collaboration site, or user storyboards would make not only Player to Dev interfacing easier, but also Player to Player interfacing. TBH, some of our best ideas and proposals have come from a handful of people discussing ideas left and right, with minimal interjection from Arenanet. Perhaps using an open-source user storyboard could allow players to track their favorite users more efficiently and allow everyone to source their ideas into categories, which can then be tied back into the overall focus of the CDI discussion at the time.

On that note, perhaps a structure for discussion, proposals, or user stories could help keep suggestions more concise and less lengthy.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_story

As a <role>, I want <goal/desire> so that <benefit>

Example below

As a PvEr, I want stronger Dungeons so that groups can be challenged more and more cool rewards can be added to the game.

^ Basic User story. From here, can expand into discussion or proposals to achieve user story.

Yeah to be clear everyone should feel free to discuss any area that they want to see improved around the CDI Process. The questions/statements I put forward are the ones that I would like to put forward.

Hi All,

Thanks for your collaboration in both the Vertical and Horizontal progression threads. We had some great conversation, ideation and commentary in both of the threads.

This Process Evolution topic is all about how we can improve our best working practices and processes for the CDI. The results of our last one were as follows:

1: More Focused Topics! (Done!)
2: Build out more time for Devs to engage (This is already in progress)
3: Thread owner to post a summary every three pages (The community did awesome here, but I want to build out more time to do this)
4: Post writers should aim to be concise and to the point using examples where necessary. (We need to improve here)

The focus of the conversation of this topic is therefore on how to improve the CDI and is not about specific areas of the game or features.

The two areas I think we need to work out or improve on are:

1: We need to keep thread and post sizes more manageable. Should we put a limit on the word length of posts?
2: How are we going to chose topics moving forward, for example, by votes or by Anet choosing them etc?

that sounds reasonable and all, but at the same time, it sounds like the best recipe to improve your rating is to stop playing, let it decay, and then come back to improve your rating on leaps, instead of crawling your way up.

at least that’s the impression i got from the quote you highlighted.

Assuming you had reasonable confidence that you would win most of your games, possibly. It’s also a recipe for having your rating drop quickly. Lower confidence also means an increase in the range of players you can be matched against.

The biggest issue we have now seems to be pairing people around the starting rating. Player experience is very diverse at that rating level and it can often leader to poor quality matches when new players are paired with veterans. When we introduce ladders, climbing the ladder would be the best way to improve the quality of opponents and teammates.

Just out of curiosity, what made you guys decide to switch from the the simple and robust Elo system from GW1 to Glicko2 in GW2?

Elo seemed to work very well and was an entirely transparent way to rank + matchmake players.

I wasn’t with ArenaNet when the decision was made, so I can’t say for sure.

My guess would be because of the ratings deviation available with Glicko.

Professor Glickman

The problem with the Elo system that the Glicko system addresses has to do with the reliability of a player’s rating. Suppose two players, both rated 1700, played a tournament game with the 1st player defeating the second. Under the US Chess Federation’s version of the Elo system, the 1st player would gain 16 rating points and the second player would lose 16 points. But suppose that the 1st player had just returned to tournament play after many years, while the second player plays every weekend. In this situation, the 1st player’s rating of 1700 is not a very reliable measure of his strength, while the second player’s rating of 1700 is much more trustworthy. My intuition tells me that (1) the 1st player’s rating should increase by a large amount (more than 16 points) because his rating of 1700 is not believable in the 1st place, and that defeating a player with a fairly precise rating of 1700 is reasonable evidence that his strength is probably much higher than 1700, and (2) the second player’s rating should decrease by a small amount (less than 16 points) because his rating is already precisely measured to be near 1700, and that he loses to a player whose rating cannot be trusted, so that very little information about his own playing strength has been learned.

Since decay is reset/undone basically when LB updates, which MMR is actually used in the formula when you decay? The current fake decayed value or your original.

Original. The decay is exclusive to the leaderboards. It’s applied to the data when we take an hourly snapshot.

Is there anyway to tell or see what your individual MMR is?

No, not currently.

Does mmr change merely from win/loss or your preformace during the game?

Win/loss only. If you have any thoughts on how you would like to see it done, feel free to share.

It’s still on the table for the future, but it lives low on the list of priorities so it won’t be making it in anytime soon.

We use Glicko2 with very minor alterations. When updating your rating, we adjust based on the average MMR of the other team.

We want to do further alterations and tuning to our MMR system, but not until we deprecate the current leaderboards.

Except a discredit system for kicking in groups for dungeons would not work based on the ability for everyone in the region to join any group without care that is posted. It would be unfair to a group to get discredited for kicking a low level after asking for an 80, same for any other requirements that a group desires.

Also, if a person disconnects, should a group have to wait 15 minutes for the person to be auto kicked in order to get a new player? That’s absurd.

This is a suitable addition/response to the suggestion thread that mr may post in the forums. It’s a bit off topic of the subject at hand here in Account Issues Sub-forum.

Figured that since that topic was not posted by mercury ATM I would say my piece. I think it is dangerous to have developers be fed these notions without discussing the complete picture.

Anyway, if Mercury posts it I will certainly respond to their thread.

Thank you, I’m sure your input will be appreciated!

And please keep in mind, no idea is implemented without careful review and much discussion by a team of developers. So all aspects will be reviewed, for sure.

And Rising Dusk, I’m on "quality"issues today like a frog on a toadstool! (A bee on a flower?) Anyway, if you can give me your ticket number, I want to take a look at your ticket and get agents on board with better, more accurate responses.

Thanks!

I don’t think you’re crazy at all, mr. I think you should post these suggestions in the PvP forums, because I’d never thought of the idea of a discredit system, and it might be worth a dev’s consideration. I can say that sometimes those systems can also be “griefed,” so there’s risk in implementing such a thing.

Basically, do share your suggestions, ok?

Ok, mangOskittle. We’re holding our heads here, such is the headache-inducing nature of the responses you received all, I assure you, from a living human being!

I talked to our GM Manager about your ticket. Quite frankly, I used the word “trainwreck” in the title. We’ve emailed all the leads so that they can talk to each agent involved to explain what he/she did wrong, and what he/she should have done to help you.

We want prompt, helpful, clear, and accurate responses. We failed with this one, and we’ll do our level best to improve in the future.

In the meantime, you should get an accurate response very soon. But the gist of the matter is contained in the forum thread you see above. This is a known issue, you will get your chest, and we’re sorry for the delay!

Someone from Technical Support will take a look at this situation, but I wanted to add a few notes:

As far as I can tell, and from what I’ve learned in checking around, we aren’t having issues with our servers. Connectivity issues can have a dozen different sources, as stated in the ticket. Where once we would help try to diagnose issues with someone’s system through Game Advisor and other reports, at the present time we are not able to accept attachments to tickets (for security reasons). This means that we cannot offer to review someone’s system report to see where their router may be misconfigured, or where their drivers may require updating. So we’ve eliminated the issue on our end, and we’re not in a position to offer detailed research into systemic issues on the customer’s end.

The source of the connection issues can be related to a user’s personal computer, ISP, Internet backbone(s) leading to our data center, etc. It would be great to be able to offer analysis into outside issues, but as explained above, we cannot do that right now. We hope to be able to go above and beyond in the future, as we have in the past, to try to help with issues related to non-ArenaNet and non-Guild Wars 2 systems. Right now, we need to stop with our own systems, and from everything I can learn, there are no issues with those.

Last word: Yes, you see several forum threads about this. There are more than 3 million GW2 accounts, so it’s not surprising to see that some folks have connection issues. Those issues appear to be individual in nature, and not an indication of a server issue — either game world or log-in. Please review the responses that you get, understand our limitations as far as offering help for external issues, and follow the advice in the responses because you may find your solution through the ideas that are shared there.

Gaile Gray, not to jump onto GrayFox’s problem..but I’m having sort of the same issues with support, whether or not this will be seen is whatever, but I would love to get back into the game I just had to purchase again! (request #301286)

If you have submitted a ticket, please give at least 3 days for a response. If you need help after that time, please post in the Account Issue Sub-Forum, in the “Tickets for Review” sticky thread. Thanks!

I’ll leave this thread open, but please do not post here with other issues. I want Technical Support to be able to post, but other topics should be posted in separate threads. Thank you for understanding!
