GrayFox — I’ve asked a TS team member to take a look! (And our apologies for the delay.)

I don’t believe you have done this, but I cannot tell. If you truly have submitted three separate tickets for the same issue, please stop doing that immediately. Go to the first ticket (the lower number) for any updates you want to provide and do not submit additional tickets. Thank you.

Also, I amended the title, because I feel it was inaccurate and somewhat aggressive. With a ticket number and a subject-based title, the team will have an easier means of addressing your issue.

You’re right, those are not satisfactory answers. If I had a ticket number ~hint, hint~ I would be able to counsel the agent on giving better responses.

But let’s talk about the situation in general:

“Griefing” is a very, very subjective term. And establishing that griefing took place can be nearly impossible. It’s not as easy as looking for chat records, since a lot of planning and plotting takes place outside the group through Vent or other chat programs. It’s not as easy as taking the word of someone who was booted from a group, because there are different ways of viewing that situation. For example (an edge case, to be sure) I remember a ticket from an irate player who wrote, “I want you to ban the people in my group. Here’s a screenshot with all their names. I told them I had a phone call and they just kicked me out of the group after 10 minutes!” Yeaahhhh, don’t think we can help you there, friend.

What I’d like to suggest is “the devil is in the details.” Give us the day, time, time zone, world, the names of as many of those involved as you can provide and a detailed description of what took place. Unfortunately, we can’t look at some sort of magical recording of your account in the game at the reported time in order to review what happened. We can’t look at your account and see the names of the others in your party at XX time in YY Dungeon. We need a description and the details I’ve suggested above and we can try to verify what happened. We dislike griefing intensely, so once verified, have no worries, we will take action on griefers — it’s just getting to a point of positive verification that poses a challenge.

Lastly, I just spoke with some key team members about this situation today. We’re actively looking at a better way of handling support tickets about griefing. Continue to submit tickets, provide the requested details, and we’ll do our best to suspend griefers or, in the case of what I call “Serial Griefing,” to terminate their accounts.

CDI- Process Evolution Phase 2- Update

I would have to agree it would be nice to see from a High Level View what ANet deemed as valuable take-aways from previous CDI’s.

Unfortunately, in all good conscience, they can’t.

They’re working in a competitive business, and they cannot be distilling hundreds of hours and thousands of posts down into bullet lists of the best, most actionable items for the competition to skim off with no more effort than browsing the forums’ Dev tracker. Amongst several other reasons, that’s probably why they’re looking to move the combined proposal writing into player hands.

There are a lot of people taking a ton of time putting forth herculean efforts to favorably contribute to this process with little feedback on the resulting outcome of their suggestions.

As annoying as it sounds, the feedback has to come essentially no earlier than the preview the patch were the idea goes live.

That extra delay is one reason why I really hope that at that phase they are extremely diligent about drawing a line back to the CDI thread and even specific posts that inspired them. With the time between suggestion and delivery being so long and so carefully hidden, for there to be any sense of payoff they are going to have to work extra hard to acknowledge those contributions or all of our commitment is going quite rightly to dry up.

I was pretty excited to see Scarlet’s Hideout in this update and for her to not be in it. On the other hand I didn’t get to burn the place down and do racial dances in the ashes…

Should I count this as a personal success or just a bit of convergent evolution?

Without their commentary, I have no way of knowing if that CDI post had a contributory impact.

I am definitely going to expose the impact between previous CDI and evolution in the live game when I get time (More observant community CDI members will already see evolution).

Like you point out Nike, there have been some pretty obvious ones already, but I agree it would be exciting to call out changes in relation to previous CDI proposal/summaries.

Origins of Madness contains a number of evolutions that were heavily impacted by previous CDIs.

I suppose what it boils down to with me is a question of why the content needs to be an elite level challenge in the first place. Would it really be all that bad if an average group of players could win?

Not at all. The Marionette was not designed to be beaten only by “elite” players. We have an idea of where the average player is skill-wise, and placed the bar where we hoped would just a tad above that, in the hopes that they would have to stretch a bit. That stretching creates tension, which is the sweet spot in event-type content as far as I’m concerned. (as opposed to the abnegation style smooth sailing content that most of an MMO needs to be.) Without the tension new things get boring faster. Too much tension, (as seems to be your case) and people give up and the content is wasted on them. That seems to be your argument about this event.

Because the player base is a diverse lot, ANY amount of tension will frustrate SOME amount, causing them to be turned off. So fundamentally we have to ask ourselves if we want to ever ask the player to stretch, or keep them all in a happy abnegated state of chillaxing. Does the benefit to those who want some tension from time to time outweigh the frustration of those who don’t?

The other question that I hope is answered in the positive is this: Can the average player skill be raised by challenging content like this? We know that X% of players don’t know about traits. We know Y% never swap out their 7-0 skills to accommodate specific challenges. And there are probably dozens of other systems that go unused by some portion of the player-base. If even 10% of that group hits a challenge like the Marionette and the subsequent tension causes them to look into these systems and they learn a new depth to the game they otherwise never would have, I think that’s a win for everybody. The average skill level rises, and in turn, we devs can make more interesting events that utilize the depth of the systems we have.

Having said all that, if after a week the Marionette is still only being beaten 1 out of 10 times, then I would say we may have tuned it a bit too difficult. On the other hand, we don’t know how long it takes for the aggregate skill level of the player-base to grow. I don’t know how long it takes for information about traits and builds to disseminate to those who had previously never looked into them. As with all our content, we are closely watching and noting these things so that every future project can learn from it.

P.S. Because several people brought up the idea of buffing the other platforms when one succeeds, I thought I ought to let you all know that this has always been the case. When one platform’s power regulator is destroyed the players on the platforms adjacent get Electrify Aura which gives 60 seconds of protection, swiftness, regeneration, fury, might, vigor and retaliation.

To tell you the truth, this isn’t something that should result in a ticket. The Word and Name Filter is set for all four supported languages, and we cover offensive words or letter combinations in many other languages, as they are reported to us. Submitting a ticket to ask why a name isn’t allowed will require time from several agents, and I would like to respectfully ask that you simply try another name and not take agents away from important issues like account access problems, crashing issues, chat violations, or a hacking/compromise incident to discuss why certain letters are not allowed, especially since those discussions can go back and forth for days .

Again, if you simply kindly would choose another name, that would be best. Thank you in advance for understanding.

I am glad that you folks understand: We cannot “give back” money that we never received. I don’t want to sound like I’m touting our store over others, but we can do more for the people who purchase from our official site, as opposed to those who buy elsewhere. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t support your local retailer, but for outlier issues like this one, we simply cannot give a refund because the money is not ours to return. Thanks again for understanding this.

As to the situation where one could add a new code to a terminated account, I will investigate that and see if there is a way to prevent it. The fact is, the chances of someone adding a code to a closed account are probably 0.0000001%. But I’ll see if there is a way to block it, without taking needed resources from other, higher-priority tools needs.

Hi Mark,

Makes a lot of sense, but in terms of getting community feedback, I doubt most forum goers would trawl subforums unless they know there’s something there of interest. Surely it encourages less community feedback to suggestions overall?

I’ve seen many threads that were begun in other sub-forums, that were then moved to the Suggestions sub-forum, There, they died. I’ve seen comments in threads that were moved to the old suggestions forum that the thread had been killed by being moved to a sub-forum that few visited. Now, if someone wants to discuss WvW, suggestion or not, they know where to go.

I see this change as a win.

It’s a win for devs, who have to monitor less forums each, but how so for players? I rarely ever look in sub forums, how can we be sure players are seeing suggestions and being given an opportunity to put forward their two cents?

Anybody who is taking the time to read a subforum relevant to their interests has the opportunity to see, read and comment on these threads. This means, for example, that a WvW player reading the WvW forum will see a WvW suggestion posted there.

They’re actually more likely to see posts in the subforum they are already reading than in the suggestions forum, where they might have only ventured once in a while when a thread they were following was moved there or to make a suggestion of their own.

Also, as mentioned above, the Suggestions forum had a bit of a reputation for being a graveyard where moderators sent threads to die. It was never our intention to send this message and so we felt it was better for overall morale to sunset the suggestions forum and allow player suggestions to live in the subforum related to the topic of their suggestions.

Thanks for the post, OP. This is a fairly polarizing topic, but it is interesting nonetheless. It came up quite a bit in the 3 likes / 3 dislikes thread as well. Changing the way downstate works would have such a large sweeping change on the way the game is played – it’s sort of fun to theorycraft the ramifications!

Keep in mind, I’m just spit-balling here – none of this is in the works. I would just like to see some more conversation on the topic.

So, what if you only rallied allies when you stomped someone, rather than cleaving the body? This would be much more difficult to pull off in large-scale fights, but you would have added risk/reward for attempting. Would even-numbered fights still snowball?

It would almost always affect players in small-scale fights as well. I’ve won plenty of 1v2’s in WvW and PvP from downstate, getting that clutch rally at the right moment – but that would go away too.

What if you couldn’t hard rez downed allies? What are the positives and negatives?

Anyways, just rambling. Feel free to discuss! If you have any good threads on the topic that come to mind, feel free to link them for me.

To be clear, the only “agenda” any of us at Arenanet have is to tell engaging and compelling stories using our medium of interactive narrative. Part of achieving that goal is to provide genuine and believable characters who have depth and interesting interpersonal dynamics, including the portrayal of complex and compelling relationships.

We have put much effort into making sure that Marjory, Kasmeer, Rox, Braham and now Taimi each bring a unique perspective to the overall Living World narrative, and we love exploring the various relationships of all of these characters, as well as those already established via the player’s personal story. You will see those relationships continue to grow and change, as you would expect of friends and comrades you encounter in real life.

Specifically with Marjory and Kasmeer, we’re trying to present two characters that have a burgeoning friendship and interest in one another, because that’s something that happens in life. We don’t generally talk much about it on forums or the like, because as has been pointed out before, we much prefer to tell their story in game wherever possible. But we would also like to think that our portrayal of their feelings towards each other is more than simply something you can define by “ticking a box”.

Regarding trimming stories of all but the “relevant details”: I would say that many of us on the dev team would actually agree with the idea that how two characters relate to one another, regardless of whether that interaction has direct bearing on the direction of the main plot-line, can and should be considered relevant. Such breadth of character traits may advance a side-plot, or no plot at all and can be used to simply establish a personality type or a behavior which informs a character’s actions as they progress through the narrative.

Of course there is a limit: Learning whether or not Braham likes ham, for example (say that five times fast) is probably better left on the cutting room floor, but exploring whether Braham likes Rox, or Taimi, or Logan (does anyone else want to see a guardian duel between these two?), well we believe that there’s real emotion there. And if it advances a plot, great…if not, it’s still part of the landscape of those characters, and that’s really important to us, and something that I would say we are more than eager and willing to explore.

The suggestions forum was archived in favor of posting in relevant subforums. Team members here already monitor those subforums that are relevant to their work, the suggestions subforum required them to look in multiple places and comb through unrelated suggestions to find those that were relevant to them. We feel that focusing suggestions into the relevant places, team members are more likely to read suggestions that they may be able to act upon.

Just a reminder there that this thread has a ton of good info and samples of phishing e-mails!

Bumping to keep this visible. It’s seems to be less of an issue, but still, some players’ e-mail providers still are blocking our mails, and we’re very sorry for those that situation affects!

It’s an odd thing when you get the title but don’t get the goods and it is a known issue. But what’s interesting is not that it’s a bug that you don’t get the rewards, but in fact a bug that you got the title prematurely, before it should have been granted.

I just wrote up a detailed response for Support, and I think it might be helpful to post some of it here:

To receive the rewards for fully exploring the world, please carefully review each map for missing Points of Interest, Skill Challenges, Renown Regions, and Waypoints with the single character with whom you are trying to finish the task. (Note: One character must do this task, not Char A for some maps and Char B for others.) The most common areas that are missed are World vs. World maps, Chantry of Secrets, and the various city maps, such as Divinity’s Reach, Black Citadel, etc. Once your selected character has visited every required area, you will receive the rewards.

Hope this is helpful info!

Skull — I wanted to follow up on this. Can you tell me if you got this sorted out? (If not, can you please give me your six-digit ticket number so I can review it to learn more?)

Thanks.

That’s an interesting update. According to the Knowledge Base, we can’t buy an NA version and register it in the EU.

‘For customers in the North American and European regions, upon registration our servers will perform a one-time check to ensure your serial code matches the region you are connecting from. Customers in North America must register the North American version of the game; customers in Europe must register the European version of the game;…’

Perhaps, someone could update the Knowledge Base with this new information. =)

I agree, that would be a good idea. I’ll ask our KB person to verify all the details in that article, and thanks for pointing it out.
