I’m a guy and I play a mix of both, though I do generally prefer my female characters (and they greatly outnumber my male toons). I don’t try to over-analyze why, I just play what makes me happy. My fiancee’ does the same with her characters (she has both male and female characters too).
If playing a character of the opposite sex makes you feel “uneasy”, then don’t do it. It’s a game and playing it should be fun for you.
Happened to my ranger a few hours ago in WvW in fact. She and a few other Rangers were kicked from the WvW squad without notice or explanation, but we still followed the zerg about for a bit anyway.
Sounds like you’re talking about “Screen Tearing”. Which is an issue you get when your when your FPS fall out of sync with your monitor refresh times.
Have you enabled Vertical Sync in the Game Graphics Options?
Thanks MrFayth, that fixed the same problem for my GF in GW1
Love the Grove, it’s exactly what a Sylvari city should look like. I didn’t like gliding at first, now I love it. I suspect I’ll soon feel the same about mounts.
According to an old thread a dev was advocating for the possibility of hiding shoes, but due to lack of support, it ended up as the niche we have today.
Hopefully if enough people show interest in this topic, it will come back up again to the Dev’s attention. A button to hide the shoes seems like a good idea (along with gloves, shoulders and helm).
Welcome to the new meta, one of the reasons i quit doing high level fractals, game used to be so friendly….
That’s one of the reasons I stopped playing WoW, when “performing” in a Raid become a chore instead of fun. If the Healers and DPS weren’t maxing in the top five they were “bumped” to the “B” team… or cut altogether.
It always seemed to me that GW2’s community was a better class of players who understood that a game is to have fun. I hope ANet finds a way to block these DPS meters.
A Bard sounds like a great elite spec for a Mesmer
I agree, already some of the Mesmer underwater effects show notes playing and the Bard would seem a great match for an Illusionist.
I read a comment on reddit that mounts are disabled in (most?) cities, so I don’t think we’re in danger of mounts cluttering the hubs…
As well as being disabled in jumping puzzles (just like Gliders). I think this will be a fun addition to help us move about the world of Tyria just a bit faster.
As is often the case in the real world, sometimes the “cure” is worse than the “disease”. In this case, we were doing what we thought was right, slaying elder dragons. With the big Z and big M, they were both actively trying to use their minions to destroy Tyria, so they had to be stopped.
But as Newton said, “For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.”…. in this case, the downside to elder dragons dying is the huge amount of magical energy that is released, and fortunately Taimi figures this out before we “The Commander” makes a terrible mistake.
I think changing our focus as players is a great way to keep us engaged in the story. After all, if each expansion is just about killing the next elder dragon, it would grow old. A change up is very welcome and I’m looking forward to what awaits us in the desert.
I enjoy all the classes, but my Ranger (LB/Axe+Torch) and my Necro Minionmaster (Staff/Daggerx2) tend to survive the best on their own for world completion.
If I can Yoshi-bounce off my Springer to go into glider mode, that’d be kittening shweeeet.
I’m so glad I’m not the only one thinking that.
Oh yeah, the moment I saw those giant bunnies jumping high into the air I thought…..jump…glide….sweet!
The question is if they will let us do combos like that.
GS Mesmers work best in a group where they can keep that ultra long distance. I do love the GS for Mesmers though, and often use it for big boss fights. For up and personal I have my Sword/Sword or Sword/Shield.
Yeaaaaah….. wall climbing ability….cool….. giant spiders everywhere…..no so
Nope, never going to happen. Get over it, buy a new slot simple as that.
LOL…..people used to say that about mounts too (never say never)
In the Vanilla game I could see their reasons to hold back from a Race Change token in the Gem Store, as it effects the first three chapters of your story. But with each expansion, as our story continues to revolve around a generic “commander”, I could see them offering one now. As a 2k Gem item I’m sure their return would be a profitable one, and they could make it conditional (Can’t use the token until you’ve chosen an Order so it won’t effect your story).
The only thing I have concerns about are the mounts. I hope there are limitations, like there are with gliding. The video showed a nice, small group with mounts in a vast world. But how will it really look when all you see around you are jackalopes and floating manta rays.
Makes me wonder if Gliding will be disabled in the new zones, or if you can do some combo thing….like use a Mount to jump you high into the air and then switch mid jump to a Glider to coast a distance?
This was once an idea…
I would love it if my Eternity had that as an alternate skin
I recommend people read:
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/The_Ministry
and
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Queen_Jennah
Key segments of note:
Her Royal Majesty Jennah, Queen of Kryta and Regent of Ascalon is a descendant of King Doric and the last known member of the Salmaic dynasty, the ruling family of Kryta. Her coronation was in 1316 AE, after the death of her father. Her egalitarian rule makes her a very popular monarch in the eyes of her people, but this also causes much friction with the nobility.
and
When Jennah’s father died, the Ministry ruled Divinity’s Reach in her stead, as she was too young to ascend the throne immediately. Because of this, some Ministers have become accustomed to ruling Kryta and are reluctant to relinquish their former control, causing friction between the Ministry and the crown. Other sources of friction include the truce between the humans and charr, which some ministers consider to be an affront to the sacrifices made by the Ebon Vanguard, and the bandit and centaur attacks that continue to wear Kryta down. There are even quiet whispers that perhaps Jennah may not be fit to rule. More recently, the ministry have been the subject of several disturbing scandals, such as the revelation that Minister Julius Zamon was in fact in charge of one of the bandit factions harassing the city, the fact that the Ministry Guard lead by Commander Serentine was involved in a plot to discredit the Seraph by helping bandits, mainly Big Nose Ted, burn down both the Queen’s Heart Orphanage and the Vanguard Hospital, or Marjory Delaqua’s claim that a minister was spotted practising dark, occultic magic on a kidnapped woman. Despite these, the ministry remains popular among the citizenry of Kryta, largely due to the efforts of their Legate Minister.
Kryta is NOT a democracy. It’s a monarchy based on nobility and ruling family with a democratic element to appease the masses. This is not Great Britain where the monarchy has only symbolic value. Queen Jenna IS the main kitten and if she suspects the Ministry to be out of order (which has been the case all over the place lately) rest assured she will crush any opposition to her rule and has every right to do so.
Considering those aspects, I personally find Jenna to have been very lax and lenient in her approach and judgement. Her first priority is to keep her people safe and root out corruption and dissent which might endanger her subjects. The Ministry, or part of it, has been in direct violation to these goals and thus has forced Queen Jennas hand.
The attack which Jenna had prepared for is only the culmination of a powerstruggle which luckily Jenna has decided for herself.
Very good points, Cyninja. We have seen many cases (both in our real history and in many fantasy and sci/fi novels) where a monarchy is temporarily replaced by a governing body due to a young or absent heir, and then when that heir is ready to reclaim the throne, that “temporary measure” may not be so willing to let go. Just look at the Steward of Gondor’s reluctance to surrender the throne in Tolkien’s “Return of the King”. In this case, we have a ministry that has shown, more than once, how corruptible it can be (if in doubt, just play through the human level 10 story)
I’m a seasoned WvWer and often spend many hours a week there, and I too have to admit I was sad that I couldn’t even get in last night (GoM server). But I agree that this is likely the result of the new armor and back item and hopefully it will go back to a more balanced wait time for us “die hard WvWers”
Perhaps a more strict AFK rule would get the queue moving faster? I hear that’s become a big issue of late.
Couldn’t even get in last night on GoM due to the long queues. Hate to think I lost my evening of WvW to AFKers.
Just got the Lava Lounge Pass and I really love the simple clothes the vendors wear and wish they were available for our characters. I especially love the simple halter top that Iris the Invincible (Master Armorsmith) wears and would definitely pay gems for that.
Humans, hands down They are fun to play, but their story is a pretty mid line fantasy tale. The Norn are based off Vikings and though I hate the male Norn body shapes, I find their lore fun enough to be a bit different. I like how the Charr came back from being the bad guys to heroes, and I find their culture of “honorable warriors” cool (in that “Klingon” way). Asura are just plain fun in their self important mindset and they are one of my favorite races to play. But as for which race has the most unique story line and are least ‘boring’, I’d say the Sylvari win that one (in my opinion). Although “elf like” in nature, being plants formed into human shape and born of the Pale Tree, they are truly a unique race in the fantasy setting, and without any Spoilers, the HoT story line truly makes them an integral part of the Tyria tapestry.
I’m sure this has been mentioned before, but the ability to combine an Outfit with a head item. I love the outfits, but being able to combine one with a choice of head gear (like glowing eyes), would be a real benefit.
Although I can see the reasons for wanting this, too much is tied into your race…..your starting story, some later story impacts. But I do agree different races add very different flavors to the game, which is probably why I have so many alts
If you’re an 80 Revenant the obvious answer is Bifrost
Whew….been trying to load “Timberline Falls” map on two diff characters for ten min now and thought I was bugged. Glad to see it’s not just me.
Yes. I still play lots of other games, but despite all its flaws, Gw2 is the game I find myself consistently coming back to. Still has one of the best combat systems out of most mmos.
I’m with you, I came from WoW originally and love GW2. I play some SW:TOR for when I want my Sci Fi fix, and TSW when I want my Horror fix, but I always come back here. The combat, the “no tapping”, the shared XP on world boss fights….no other game comes close (and I’ve played a TON of mmorps out there…. LOTRO, DDO, CoX, Champions, STO, PWI and on and on….)
I always find it a bit of an immersion killer when I do the story and go from “new Lion’s Arch” to “old Lion’s Arch” while in story mode around DE and the whole “battle of Claw Island”. I almost wish they would update those cut scenes to the new Lion’s Arch.
Both my fiance and I have noticed a recent spike in lag of late. She’s using an older nVidia card, but I have brand new GTX 1050 and plenty of regular memory as well as 4 gigs of GPU memory. Normally I’m at high resolution and a steady 60+ FPS. But just this last week suddenly I’m hitting lag spikes like crazy, especially in any area with lots of players.
The reward tracks are great to replicate Dungeon loot when you don’t enjoy pugging for dungeons. I wouldn’t have even tried WvW if I hadn’t needed the Gift of Battle for my legendary, and now I spend a lot of my free GW2 time there, joining in roaming zergs and blobs.
I was using a Razer Blade for a while and it handled WvW fine but the keyboard does heat up like a mini supernova. I recently switched to the new 2017 Dell XPS 15 (i7 – nVidia 1050) and it seems to be handling WvW ok and no burning my hands on the keyboard anymore – and it’s barely over 4 pounds so it’s nice and light and the screen is gorgeous.
Definitely a personal choice thing. Ranger is one of my favorite classes, but none of my Rangers do the “Druid” thing as I feel it changes the whole nature of the class (but again, that’s just me, I know others love it).
Instead of adding more professions, I’d love to see a second set of Elite paths made available for each class, allowing more diversity in our end game.
This is a tough one. I personally find the sound The Dreamer makes very annoying….In fact the sound has caused me to move away from other characters who are using it (most noticeable in big boss fights or WvW zergs)….but I also know people who absolutely love the sound and are currently working hard to make it. I wouldn’t make The Dreamer for myself, but after going through all the effort to make a different legendary (Kudzu), I’d be pretty upset if that Legendary then changed after I went through that long process to make it. It’s always a tough one when you change a set way an items looks/sounds, especially if that item either costs real money, or considerable game time to create. Lishtenbird’s suggestion of having the sound only play for the weilder does sound like a viable solution (or perhaps a toggle switch that lets you hear/not hear legendary effects?)
What has become of the internet in the last few years? Like people are offended by ANYTHING and EVERYTHING. People have become so touchy.
If a floppy fish in a video game “hurts” your “safe space” so much then that’s a sign you need to put on your big girl/boy pants and grow up.
Shouldn’t you people be complaining about the mini chickenado as well? It’s clearly a distressed chicken and its eggs forever stuck in a tornado. https://youtu.be/Ts_inBW-jDA
Although the chicken in the chickenado is not having her best day, the chicken isn’t “suffocating” or “dying”, while the fish clearly is. A better analogy would be if the chicken mini was running around after being beheaded … and no, I wouldn’t buy that either.
The class does have some interesting crit based procs, unfortunately you lack the gear or the critical hit amount to make use of those. This isn’t WoW. Your damage is actually defined by the stats on the armor you wear. Here a small link to the itemnomencalture picture which nicely depicts the vanilla stat variations and how they relate to each other: https://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/5/55/Nomenclature_graph.png
Your Knights set provides you with 58% of the offensive stats which a full damage set would provide. Bad news, soldiers gives even less damage stats. Switching to soldiers from knights due to lack of damage is like poking your eye out because you have a problem with your vision. That’s not even getting into how the damage formula works.
Been playing GW2 for just over three years now, and I’ve never noticed that graph before, thanks for pointing it out. Makes me very happy with the Berserker sets my characters use.
But to the OP, I came from a “WoW” environment and there was certainly a learning curve to get used to GW2, but in the end, I found it offered a lot more and, in my opinion, the basic mechanics of combat and player cooperation are second to none here. But it took me a lot longer than a month to come to that conclusion. It took a good month to just “unlearn” WoW
Did they even do one last year?
I’m thinking that they may not do one since some people were unable to take a joke in 2015 with the aviator one and even disappointedly tried to use a tragic plane crash to get it removed.
Yeah, I think the “Aviator backfire” was their sadly their last. April 1st pranks can be fun, but the hard thing about in game (or IRL) jokes is that timing has a big effect….not to mention the fact that what one finds funny, others may not.
Their best bet is not something that effects the characters directly but something we’d all still see….change the scenery, put a joke item in the Gem Store, put out a note in the Dev Update about a new 10th class that is obviously so silly it has to be a joke, or tell the us that Skritt will become a playable race, but won’t be smart enough to do skills unless you get at least five other friends to play Skritt too and hang out with you all the time (since Skritt are only smart in groups ~lol~) …. stuff like that.
Mesmer no contest
Not Mesmer the class but Mesmer in the game meaning I’m not held to target an enemy to summon clones. Zombies are dumb so a couple clones running around and the zombies will go after them and I could shatter to destroy the zombies.Phantasms too along with stealth, teleport, protection, buffs, and even gw1 era skills like illusionary weapon meaning illusionary gun should be possible too. Means Mesmers would be king of the zombie apocalypse regarding zombies, looting, and using mind tricks to bend other survivors to your will.
Also speaking of zombies why don’t we have a zombie legendary weapon the other dragons have legends that tie to their elements so why not Zhatian?
I’d go for Mesmer too….. think you’re about to bite me zombie? Nope, here’s my decoy clone instead. Besides, I’d be able to help out my friends with all the emergency portals out of bad places
I think a second Elite path for each class would add more diversity. For example: What if your Ranger doesn’t want to suddenly become a healing Druid at 80? A second option would be great. If each of the nine classes had a second Elite path to pick (where only one would be active in the 3rd trait line), that would certainly add diversity.
Glad to see so many are enjoying this thread. I’ve embarked on my “Journey to Eternity” (hey, it rhymes ~heh~) and am enjoying the challenge. I know Twilight will look better on some of my characters and Sunrise more on others, while my Mesmer plans to use the Eternity skin. She’s a Sylvari, so she’s used to looking one way during the day and another at night already.
You’re completely missing the point if you have to ask if it is worth it. The point is that it was put in the game to be something cool (i.e., shiny carrot on a stick) for the people that want it. It has nothing to do with need or being “worth” it in terms of stat increases. If you’re thinking in terms of “worth” or “need” then you need to go skipping elsewhere in game because legendary weapons aren’t for you.
I will have Eternity. It might take me years, and I am perfectly fine with that. I may also go for Rodgort and Meteorlogicus while I’m at it.
I know this is bringing an old post “back from the dead”, but I actually found it very helpful, and others trying to make this decision may as well. I’ve been playing GW2 for about three years now and I’m finally looking into creating a Legendary for just that reason…. a fun goal to gain some sparkly effects. My main is a Mesmer and she already has an ascended greatsword, so it’s not about the stats, it’s about the challenge…. ‘Life is a journey, not a destination.’ – RWE
Markets change all the time. I don’t see an issue that needs to be addressed at all. What difference does it make if you can buy precursors for cheap, other than it reduces the cost to making a legendary for those wanting to do so quickly?
This is very true. I’m in the process of crafting The Bifrost right now and I constantly watch the price of the precursor (The Legend) and it goes up and down and back up again constantly. Same with the Leaf of Kudzu and the rest.
New Player, Sad Player. Expansion ruined it.

I have to admit the first time I went from Zhaitan to HoT I had to agree it seemed like a huge leap in difficulty, but then I stepped back and did Living World Season 2, which kinda ramps you up to HoT (and makes the story a lot more understandable). After LWS2 I felt more prepared for HoT, and I enjoyed it more as well.
HoT still keeps me on my toes more than central Tyria, but I’ve learned to appreciate that extra challenge.
I know a couple of Legendary weapons (Bifrost and Nevermore) require a drop from the Jade Maw during their construction, so this is probably a popular Fractal with crafters. I know I’ll need to be trying it soon while I work on my legendary
I’m all for new playable races, but with all due respect to Dwarves…..been there, done that in other games. What makes GW2 unique are playing races you can’t play in other fantasy MMORPS… Sylvari, Norn, Charr, Asura So if we were going to add a playable race, my first pick would be the Tengu (there is already a potential starting area waiting for them between Lions Arch and Kessex Hills/Caledon Forest). Other ideas would be the Quaggan, Skritt or even Centaurs (Hey, Centaurs can’t all be evil, just ask Ventari).. But my first choice would be the Tengu.
Just got stuck in last fight behind the pillar because my team mate went into the room first. If you are in a group, make sure you all go into the final room together or the fight will be bugged. Even if your teammates win, you won’t be able to leave the room.
In short, you missed the whole LS2 story (and the movie describing ls1 story).
The first time I went from finishing the main story on to Heart of Thorns it also confused me until I decided to stop and go back and do Living World Season 2….it explains so much about what leads you from the main story to expansion. After I finished LW:s2 I went back and continued HoT and I was like “now I get it”
Also, as another player pointed out, play the five different races. Each racial backstory gives you new insight into the bigger storyline.
Especially with the Sylvari ….
Between getting introduced to Trahearne almost right away, to learning the backstory to Caladbolg….to the creepy cool “whispers” you get to hear from Mordremoth in HoT
Rednik, love the pics!
We already have Ice Bows that are dropped for random use. How about a bow of flame that shoots fire arrows? Would look especially cool if you could colorize it as you wish (blue flames, red flames, green flames, etc).
I have to agree that kudos are deserved for this event. Well done! But I agree that other alternative weapons should be available. If Caladbolg can be formed into a shield, it certainly could be formed into a bow or a staff or an ax.
