Say what you like but for me personally they lose a heap of money, i wont buy what i can’t buy, its as simple as that.

It’s not a consumer friendly move and I can sympathise with you there. But if it wasn’t working, ANet wouldn’t be continuing the practice for 3 years; the timer causes panic buying by many players.
Still, playing that tactic caused ANet to lose a hook on me. Had they held one of the items in the march sale for more than 1 day, I wouldn’t have had the spare gems (all from converted gold) to buy the Infinite Continue Coin, in which case I would have whipped out my card.

4 System pairs you according MMR again. (Within same ranking)
5 Woot more subpar players.

Precursor crafting. I don't get it . . .

I just find it funny that Anet decides to develop for the 1st gen precursor crafting to address the player’s demand for a non-rng way of procuring a precursor. There is already a method and it is call the TP. Making the process to have almost the same value as the TP is pretty much defeating the purpose itself.

becouse precursors can now be crafted havent the gold to get said precursors gone down abit?

Not really.

It would appear that the crafting of precursors was designed to be about the same cost in materials’ price in gold, just so that the prices on the TP wouldn’t be compromised.

precursor collection is a ripoff

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Bob F It.5701

The point of the system is to give you an alternative to farming gold to get the precursor. You aren’t supposed to just buy all the items off the TP.

Way to miss the purpose entirely.

And as far as the cost goes, HoT just launched. Everyone is trying out the new system causing the price of things to go up with demand which is why precursor prices are falling because less people are just buying a completed one.

The point of the changes was to give an option of bypassing the trading post and RNG entirely. Anyone who thought this would be easy or a short method was kidding themselves.

I’ve been bypassing the RNG already by grinding the key ingredient: gold. I’m still left with the choice of whether to spend it on ascended, precursor, or anything else.

Maybe Wanze is right that most skins are from bought keys. I just spoke to a guy who was asking about the Chaos weapons. After I mentioned that if available they were no longer one key, he told me he had FIFTY tickets! He said he got them when they were cheaper to buy.

O.o

I said, that’s nice. (And wondered how much he spent)

Well now I wonder if it’s the keyrunners or whales who’ve done us the service of supplying the skins to the point they massively undercut the cost it takes to get them.

You can create multiple characters. Was just trying to show you guys that the limitation to PS lvl 10 story doesn’tmean the end of the world.

Yeah, you should also kill stuff in pvp – I have no idea whether or not keys drop there but they do in PvE and wvw – and you had to do some pve to get your char to lvl 10/the story. Don’t get your “HEART OF THE MIST” point, sorry – did you do the personal story while waiting for a match to start?
A good way to make tomes useful is to indirectly sell your spirit shards by turning T5 into T6 mats, by making superior siege (you can buy usual siege and all stuff on the TP) and more stuff one can probably find out with google.

The keys dropped, meaning I got them when I killed mobs which was really rare and which should now be increased – the point of this thread.

The keys did drop, but the rate they dropped meant those keys had next to no influence on the price of gems or BL skins. I highly doubt the buffed drop rate means it’s going to be raining keys; a drop rate change from 1/8000 to 1/4000 is likely on the scale of what’s happened

The point of this thread is that you can’t keep repeating the first 10 levels constantly for keys, so we’re going to get less chests opened, less tickets obtained, and less BL skins on the market.

I would be ok if the average cost per BL weapon was $6. like the single weapon skins.. that would still be expensive for a weapon skin that other games just add normally as content, but it would be kind of acceptable.

but $20+? I’d love to hear them try to explain that. Especially in a system that is based on gambling.

The TP price is caused by the low supply caused by ANet’s tight-fisted drawing up of the chests’ drop table. Yet buying off the TP is the better proposition because whales keep buying keys, placing higher supply of the skins in the market while driving the price of keys/gems up.
If you want good evidence of how much some people love keys, just check the gem price spike when keys were 26% off (28th August).

I think what they are banking on is people will buy more keys because the stuff that drops is now ‘worth more’ due to less supply from key farmers. Black lion skins right now might be 80-100g at release making scraps worth 8-10g but if the key farmers really consisted of a large supply, and the skin price for example doubles then each scrap is suddenly worth 16-20g.

Permanent Contracts could see the same rise, tempting players to gamble on keys for that elusive contract. We saw how this worked with the hairstyle contract before when it was first added. Buy keys for a chance of 2000g contract!

I think one reason why keys have historically bad value is because keyrunning created a lot of the supply of ticket-weapons. It would be silly if the keyrunning nerf got those players to suddenly buy keys; they were running to get around the bad value, getting worse because of greater demand for gems pushing the price up. Instead, skin prices will likely rise to better reflect the value of keys because the supply is going to dip.

I got the level 10 and level 40 keys on different characters this week. I’ll come back when I get the level 10 character to level 40 and see if a key comes out. (If it doesn’t, I can’t be certain why, either because the reason stated is true, or the level 40 key is also time gated.)

People keep typing up speculations as if they are facts. We just don’t know what’s going to happen.

  • How much will BL keys drop in open world?
  • Will ANet also adjust the drop tables and rates of the contents?

The main thing we know is that the distribution of keys will be more spread out — previously, they were only available to those willing to pay for the excitement of opening chests or those willing to farm for it; now, keys might be available to everyone.

How the market will adjust… well, we aren’t going to see that today. We might see it in a month.

We’re talking about how the market will react. But yes, it does all hinge on how much the drop rate for keys increases.

I bought a bunch of keys during the sale (63 gems per key, buying 25 at a time), and kept track of what they netted me:

> 64 gems per chest, and
> 37 silver per chest.

These figures do not include items which have no purchase cost and no selling value (like account bound stuff.) It also does not include crafting bags (I was too lazy to calculate these.)

If I had paid regular prices for 25 keys (84 each), I still would have netted 43+ gems and 37+ silver per key.

Does that gem value include all the boosters that we consider useless?

ANet probably loves the value of gems going high as it places better value on buying gems with real money for either the gem store or exchanging for gold.

I don’t see that working in practice. People who want something from the gem store but aren’t willing to pay real money for it have already decided that it’s not worth the price they’re asking for it. If the gem prices get too high, their opinion won’t suddenly change with regards to real money, they’ll just decide that it’s not worth any kind of money and move along.

You certainly can’t please everybody, and there’s (hopefully) a price point that people would refuse to pay from either side of the system because the effort is too extreme (I’m looking at you, Neopets paintbrushes).
However, among GW2 players, there are some that just have to get literally everything. We occasionally see this whenever a new item from the gem store comes out.

I feel what they should’ve done is just restrict F2P accounts from obtaining keys via keyfarming (or atleast 1 key – per week). Them doing this to vets is another kick in the teeth, I still feel salty I have to pay for the game twice (and no i didn’t receive the free character slot Arena-net feels can make up for this). I love the game but each time they scheme makes the game more and more of a turnoff.

I really don’t believe f2p is the issue here. I think the sale we just had was them testing the market. When they put up keys for a crazy price even then very few people bought them. They then placed blame on key-farming rather than the BL chests themselves and decided to do something about it. Their fail logic is a bit silly this time. It’s the chests that are the problem, Anet. If the keys were WORTH buying, we would.

Keys will never be worth it; the economic phenomenon that occurs is that keys will be bought whenever they are worth it, and then the gold->gem exchange pushes the price up until it isn’t worth it anymore (and then gamblers push the price that bit more). What the drop rate of tickets and whatnot does affect is the price of BL skins on the trading post, and how the gem exchange reflects the demand for tickets.

ANet probably loves the value of gems going high as it places better value on buying gems with real money for either the gem store or exchanging for gold.

Just Completed Personal Story... WHAT???

Bob F It.5701

What was your idea and reasoning behind such pay gating otherwise free content?

The reasoning was to keep players interested in the game and to continue logging in.

Those that stuck with the game during Season 2’s release time frame were rewarded with having free access to that content forever. Those that were less interested in the game and did not log in missed out and have to pay a small fee (either with in-game currency or real world cash) to unlock it, or even just group with someone that has it unlocked.

Seems reasonable to me, but that is just my opinion.

It’s not so much rewarding regular players, rather that the structure punishes players taking an absence, as well as new players. They now have to put in more effort to get on board the only narrative past the launch content. Such a focus on keeping players is not going to balance out the players who do leave with new/returning players filling the customer gap.

It’s established that the reasons for getting ascended equipment are either Fractals for the agony resistance you get more economically, or for WvW where 5% over other players will give you an edge.

Engineer has a pierce shot too I believe.

Traited ranger LB pierces (I use it because of this very tactic of meatshielding), so to protect your teammate you would need to negate the projectile (block, reflect or invulnerable).

Regarding homing projectiles, most cases projectiles fly in a straight line of arc determined at he time of firing, typically with he angle of the shot leading any movement; any bending you see is lag correcting what your client drew to what the server is doing.

Black Lion Keys. Are they worth it?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Opening chests from gem bought keys will nearly always not be worth it. Keys are among other things, like salvaging ectos, opening heavy mouldy bags, and flushing in the toilet, will return an average value somewhere under the value of what went in.

The reason is twofold.
First, a lot of players are inclined to gamble; if there’s a chance of winning big, then it’s like a game to them, so they’ll buy the input (say gold>gems to buy keys), increasing its demand and the winners will often put their gains on the market, increasing the outputs supply. The prices will move in accordance to this.
Secondly, if it ever were worth it, you can be kitten well certain that players will crack the chests open, buy globs from Tarrktun, etc. .
Ok, that last example was a bad one, but my point is that when some item-to-item transfer will give you a net gain, then demand a supply will be affected similarly to my first point, until it once again reaches an equilibrium of just not quite being worth it.
An example of this is something I made a gain on during Escape From/Battle Of Lion’s Arch: iron ore was in massive demand due to iron and steel ingots being required to upgrade the new backpiece. I saw that I could make a profit by buying out armour and weapons that would only give iron ore when salvaged, up to the price point of a single iron ore, and selling the ore back, while also getting lots of essences of luck on the side. Eventually all the weapons and armour left on the TP were priced at a point were it was no longer certain that a profit was to be made.

Since we got multiple armour sets, I could do different looks for different builds.

However, I intend to do a charr revenant on release; trying to skirt around all the poorly done armours is going to be the usual pain, but at least Mistwalker has been modeled on a charr.

Since beta players get multiple sets of armour, I might as well do a different look for a different build:

H: Resplendent Curtain
S: Barbaric Pauldrons
C: Pit Fighter Chestguard
L: Phalanx Legplates
F: Pit Fighter Greaves
