Official Feedback Thread: Episode 4 -- Head of the Snake

Chista.4750

The actual story part of the episode is great, I really like it, but there are a few mechanical misses there.

Particularly the bar that says to pass time in the zone while the seraph gear up. It’d make more sense if it were completing hearts or something.

The final battle is somewhat insane: the room is too small, and the jade constructs ruin everything with their extra knockbacks, you can get stuck in the wall, caudecus’ skills seem to randomly ignore blocking or evasive states… Four things that I can see to make that better: Replace the constructs with other mobs, preferably ones that don’t knock back, but add a different layer (honestly, the placement has a lot more wiggle room for difficulty than the CC does). Increase the size of the room (seriously). Don’t let the player spawn -under- caudecus when rejoining the fight (this messed me up quite often) and if nothing else: add an anvil before the fight.

I’m not so much troubled by Braham having issues, but he seems to be dealing with them in a very self destructive way. I wouldn’t be surprised if Braham got someone else killed, and that would be the thing to snap him out of this behaviour. All the worse if that’s going to be a character I’m fond of.

Honestly, Braham is giving me very, very negative vibes right now, to the point where if I could choose between him and Marjory in my team, I’d choose Marjory, even though I’m not particularly fond of her either. I’m not sure I wan’t Braham in Dragon’s Watch at all at this point, even though he used to be one of my more favored DE 2.0 characters. I don’t even particularly feel like playing this story through on all my characters because of him. Thankfully, no-one is forcing me.

Chista.4750

Yes we do, I have 11 character slots now, where I had 9 before =)

However one is a beta slot, which means it will be removed after the betas are over and any char you had in there (and anything in the inventory) will be lost.

Maybe I’m blind, I’m pretty sure I had 2 empty char slots after reserving a name for my rev and remaking my keyfarm. This was when I just went by all my chars to put in all the traits etc… Just logged in and it’s not here now x.X Maybe I’m just really ready for new glasses…

Regardless, should be 2 slots either way or the next ragemob is going to fall all over the forums over getting shafted.

As I read the blog on Masteries, it seemed to me they said location determined which tracks you could advance.

I’ll re-read that then, My understanding was that it determined which masteries you could use. I shall be back shortly ^.^

EDIT: Ok, im not sure which bit confuses you, but im guessing it os most likely this:

“The jungle itself provides the context through which you’ll earn and utilize Heart of Maguuma Masteries. As another example, Fractal Masteries will provide combat perks and more rewards within the context of Fractals. As you play specific content, you’ll become more effective within that content, reflecting your increasing skill as a player and opening up new possibilities.”

I believe this just means to say that the masteries are inspired by the jungle. aditionally: there are skill-point like points on the map where a player can unlock masteries, these -are- locked by mastery levels, i.e. some mastery points cannot be obtained without having gliding already unlocked.

The question of where you ought to accumulate the experience points however doesn’t seem to be mentioned, unless i’m reading over it =)

Chista.4750

As far as I can tell it doesn’t really matter in which map you get the exp. The difference between Tyria and Maguuma mastery tracks is simply where you are able to use the masteries.

For instance: you can only glide in the maguuma, but if you want to get the exp for the track in Iron Marches it should be totally fine =)

It could be I missed an announcement on experience being bound to locations (which would be a questionable design decision), but as far as I know it should work as above.

Also, evidence for 2 maps, between livestreams etc. But I’m betting there will be a few more. The average map count for all expansions I’ve seen in the past 10 or so years is 8. the least amount of maps I’ve seen being 5.

If we’re gonna go for everything they said would hit before HoT, break bars are probably also a part of it, and I’m guessing from NPE traits to Hero points is probably just as big of a change as OPE to NPE In how a player plays the game. Possibly, the fear storyline will also be reinstated in the same patch, we know they’ve been working on it for a long time.

Enough is changing to call it a feature pack if we assume all these things we heard are “coming” are hitting in one big chunk.

If they interfered with you getting the heart, I would say that’s reportable. Were you able to get the heart? If you still need the heart, and are in NA, we can form a party and see if I can get you to any of the apparently friendly servers I was on when I did the heart.
I haven’t seen any example of this kind of behavior, on any of 6 alts that got the heart recently. And I’ve gone to the island to observe several times since then.
I concentrated mainly on the rats, which are green and unfarmable. I took at least couple of crows(away from groups, and the farmers) each time. No one harassed me. And the times I have been there observing, no one has harassed anyone else. There seem to be occasional griefers, but there are a few comments and everyone moves on. It may have just been bad luck that you got in with unfriendly farmers. Or I’m having quite a bit of good luck – because I haven’t seen anyone yelling at people not to complete the heart, in any of the times I’ve been there since the farming began. I’ll try to help you if you want.

I got the heart, didn’t even know why they were spamming my chat with stop so
I just shrugged it off and completed it in just over the 2 minutes you’d need if not interrupted. I wasn’t doing anything wrong, and for what it’s worth, they wont see me there again till Revenant rolls around and I go for my 10th world completion :p

I am in EU, and I’ve not gotten yelled at by any other group in the 5 map completions I did in the past months. Perhaps this group was just plagued by particularly entitled players. To me it was merely an odd situation, especially cos the word “stop” alone doesn’t explain anything. I’m the kind of player that would actually have gone over to just stomping rats if they’d just asked me please not to kill the whites instead ^.^;;

I missed out on last halloween, so maize balm is still an alien concept to me =S

What happens to exp when you max masteries?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Chista.4750

Chista.4750

I’m actually glad the tomes won’t do anything for masteries since it’ll only speed up how fast you run out of masteries.

I’m guessing that once you max all masteries though, you just wont get more exp. Mostly to prevent people from saving up billions of exp and instantly mastering everything that comes out later.

Since mastery points are physical objects that you need to interact with in the world, among other things like story completion, I’m guessing those, unlike exp, will pool up. Meaning you can have all masteries maxed, but a surplus of x mastery points

WvW no longer required for world completion

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Chista.4750

Chista.4750

I’m actually glad about this, if true. I haven’t seen a red post confirming what was essentially a translation from a chinese patch note. Unless I missed it over dinner.

I have completed world completion old style 3, almost 4 (just missing a few blue borderlands things) times. I don’t need anything back and I think it will actually increase the quality of WvW experiences, though I barely play it. There will be less roamers, making a full map essentially more effective when people aren’t just trying to get that dreaded map completion.

I don’t mind doing WvW for my legendary, it’s 500 badges if you exclude map completion (I hope it’ll stay the same amount) and when spent with a group, not all that unbearable. The map completion however makes me feel like I am playing a horror game; I’m in constant terror when I’m traversing a borderland on my own. I don’t enjoy the feeling.

If anything the lack of prior “getting ganked all the time though I just wanna complete my map” experience might just make it seem less daunting. Meaning that potentially, with other advertisement for it also in place, more people will be drawn to WvW, having missed out on this ugly bit of it.

My sole problem with PvP of any kind, in any game, is always the situation where you can’t do anything, the 5v1s or the ambushes by people specifically out to hurt the experience of others, the trash talk about how badly you suck after you just tried to run away, uninterested in the battle at hand because you know you are inferior, in knowledge or power. It’s the most off-putting thing possible to me. I found it doesn’t happen as often in sPvP and can bear it, heck I get my dailies that way -This is from someone who loathes PvP of any kind in any other game-. In WvW I found it occurs constantly and therefore avoid it when I can, bar the cases where I need badges or world completion. Guess when I’m actually happiest to be there? When I’m gathering badges, with a group.

Removal of WvW zones from map completion would mean that the most daunting, the least appealing, part of WvW is no longer something you basically -must- do to achieve some of the most obvious goals in this game. Sure, the people that basically band together to hunt for these solos specifically get shot in the foot, but arguably, they too are just doing things that may not be entirely beneficial to their world in the end.

Technically, they could. They could decrease the afk timer to a ridiculously low number, like in activities. of course, this would cause rage storms from all the people that just needed to go to the loo in a 1 hour SW…

It’s choosing between two evils, and it’s only to question which evil has the better pay-off.

Chista.4750

There isn’t a single backpack in game you can dye, the wings are not an exception.

Fishing

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Chista.4750

Chista.4750

I’ve seen tons of games, both on and offline that had fishing. I think it can be implemented in a way as to be fun. However, the standard skill and enter when you get a chat message that is implemented in the majority of MMOs probably won’t do here.

The most memorable fishing experience I had was in FFXI, after they changed fishing to make it harder for fishing bots: you had to actually wear the fish/monster you had hooked out before you could catch it. It took some skill to reel a fish in but I don’t think it ever completely stopped the bots… Not to mention you had a rather embarassing change to fish up notorious monsters in certain places… kitten that squid that ruined so many ferry rides for poor level 20s…

The most interesting offline fishing mechanic would be Okami, but obviously, you’re not going to draw a fishing line to a fish in GW2.

There is plenty of other games that implement fishing as a minor activity that lead to certain special things, in the case of GW2, I guess the product other than fish could be collections that lead to better fishing items/unique skins or perhaps fishing up items that unlock a collection that has less to do with fishing and more to do with treasure hunting.

It could be a threshold to adventure for someone that just temporarily didn’t know what to do in the game or was waiting for friends in a town. You don’t necessarily need to go out into dangerous places to fish, it’s a laid back activity you can easily pick up and put down, a pretty powerful tool if done well, even if not all people are going to understand it’s allure.

Why is silk going up in price?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Chista.4750

Chista.4750

Well, remember, there’s farming and then there’s farming. With resources like metal and wood, you can actually harvest it, guaranteed 3+ units per node you see, maps with specific node locations, boom boom boom, resources. With things like silk, there’s always RNG. Yes, there are places you can go where you are very likely to get large amounts of silk over a given period of time, as large amounts of trash mobs spawn that have a solid chance of dropping silk, but it’s still pretty variable and takes more effort (not that effort is necessarily a bad thing, but relative effort needed should always be considered).

I believe I went on to explain what farming entailed in this case ^.^; But yes, I do agree that in the case of silk, it’s all RNG. There’s not really any reliable method to gather cloths like there is to gather metals or woods.

As for the tip to farm SW, I have done enough SW to get all my lumi and then some. I don’t generally get into decent maps for the place. Not to mention 90% of the items I get are weapons, leather or heavy. Even forging stuff, it’s less stressful and more efficient to just farm T5 only bags and salvagables that drop silk and linen, especially since neither activity is very interesting to me. I guess I could tally which is more efficient in the end: 5 SW runs, or the same time spent farming.

Chista.4750

Let me ask a question, if you could farm silk specifically, but slowly, so the price remained what it currently is or higher, would that be better or worse?

I think it would certainly be a step towards making this a more bearable resource, depending on how you have in mind. It’d be nice if you could wake up one morning and say: OK! getting 300 silk scraps.

I generally farm Flame Legion not too far from CoF to get their bags and salvages (both good for Silk, and the salvages give some linen) but it still takes -hours- as it is mostly dependent on RNG. The most displeasing about this to me, is that I’m on the same sub-region of a map for hours on end, I have more fun farming mithril because I’m running around, killing a variety of foes (or outrunning them), it’s a less static activity in that sense. I see more of the map, need to stay on my toes a bit more as opposed to tab-1 farming of evil kitty upon evil kitty….

Farming specifically for silk -is- possible, the currently available methods are just not very engaging, and not something most people look into for that same reason.

Chista.4750

Personally hoping for a little more depth to such a system. For instance:

You want to build a Artificing station in your guild hall. To do this you need 10000 influence and 100 lumber.

To get the guild lumber, you do a related guild quest. Within or outside of the guild hall, that adds 1-5 lumber per player completing it, repeatable weekly. Or for a maximum of X lumber, where the whole guild needs to work together to meet a quota. This would have to be rewarding for the player, gold/karma/items/guild reknown (A sort of leaderboard who works hard for the guild.)

There could be a large amount of such tasks that change daily, weekly, or monthly depending on the size of the task. It’s something I’ve personally been hoping for, rather than just an area you can loiter in, though I guess I am used to jumping at events that benefit my chosen guild from other games (Rift, Forsaken world etc.)

Again, that’s how it works. Convenience is expensive. If they changed anything to benefit people with less time to play, those with more time to play will benefit as well and will still have more than those that don’t. I do play a lot, but not as much as most. And no, I don’t grind a lot. I play to have fun with friends. After a year of playing I finally have my first few ascended weapons. I have no ascended armor and I won’t for a while. I’ve spent months saving up t6 mats for my gift of fortune because I cannot afford to spend the gold on them. That’s fine with me. Just because I don’t have time to farm areas for hours to get them, I don’t feel like the price should be lowered for my convenience. You only get what you invest into the game.

Not to be cruel, but I play 8-13 hours a day at the moment, I play a mesmer (cloth based) but I make roughly 150 scraps a day. sometimes more, sometimes less, through regular play. In that same time, just off my salvages, I do get roughly a stack of leather bits and 200+ mithril. Never bothered to count wood. If I want to get 300 silk, I need to spend 8 hours farming -specific- mobs, alternating two places when I get bored. I gave this up because I play to experience the illustrious feeling of “fun” which farming flame legion and zombies for 8 hours is -not-.

This is not a situation that can be viewed through one person’s playstyle or their luck, but rather demands a vision through the over all picture. The Truth is that silk is 7S35 per bolt as of writing this, whereas Mithril is 1S, Elder Planks 1S25 and cured thick leather squares an appallingly low 30C. All on Buyout, not order.

This simply means that supply/demand ratios for these materials are not equally distributed, or you’d see more of a 2-3 silver difference between these materials, not 6. High end difference for the things that can be farmed of course, since they’ll never be as expensive.

I got a suggestion on how to equalize and spread the costs for the materials you need for ascended crafting:
Insignias could be made with one of each(damask, elonian leather and deldrimor steel), instead of three bolts of damask.

This would reqcuire tailors and leatherworkers to buy their steel on the TP (or make it on a secondary), since they can’t make steel, and the same for armoursmiths and leather. Overall it seems like a decent idea, but it would cause complaints from people that only level one character.

Similarly, it might be possible to go for 2 of the craft’s main material, and 1 of the craft’s off material, but this would require 3 different recipes to exist for the same item, with the offset that people with multiple crafts will just create whichever costs less, allowing some self-policing of the economy and thus making it more inpredictable.

Both are things I considered, but decided not to share as viable options earlier due to their obvious downsides.

Hm. What I find strange, is that John Smith posted on here, but only to comment on the validity of the thread, rather than the topic itself.

Is this an issue ArenaNet doesn’t care about, or is it just something they’re aware of, but don’t want to discuss right now?

They have an economist that gets paid to look into this sort of thing, the fact nothing has been changed might just mean it’s not been noticed, but it might also mean that they just don’t care. As for the comments, CM’s probably wanna have fun too ^.~

If your email is already being used for your GW2 account then you should already be signed up, no?

I didn’t see anyone saying they have failed to sign up for the newsletter on an account that isn’t used for a GW2 account.

The thing is that I used to get e-mails with every 2 week release. However, these too have not reached my e-mail for the Seeds of Truth or later content. I would reckon you’d get a different message, such as: “This e-mail is already in our mailing list” rather than "Thank you for signing up for the newsletter!

We’ll be in touch soon with the latest Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns™ information."

Not to mention I do reckon they are two separate mailing lists, since one covers “hey! we dropped this into the game today” and the other covers “We’ll drop this into the game at some undetermined time.” People interested in one do not necessarily care to hear about the other.

As far as design goes, I’d reckon they’d at least adhere to Nielsen’s in the case of websites, Error prevention and Help users recognize, diagnose, and recover from errors being two fairly obvious ones here.

In case the logic seems a bit odd to you. It’s pretty much:
The website says I signed up and should get news >
I am not getting news, or confirmations that I am soon to receive news>
Something must be wrong.

I have started a chain of communications with microsoft regarding this issue, so far I have been presented with this workaround for e-mail adresses that use outlook.com:

1. Log in to your account in Outlook.com.
2. On the Outlook.com page, click the gear icon on the upper part and select ‘Manage rules’.
3. Under ‘Rules for sorting new messages’, click ‘New’.
4. Under ‘Create rule’ enter the following.
When an email matches
First box: Sender contains
Second box: (email address of sender)

Do the following
First box: Move to
Second box: Inbox

5. Click ‘Create rule’.

This does not work for me (I tried). It might, however, be worth trying out for some of you guys. Basically this rule prevents e-mail from @NCsoft (or however you want to input it in the rule) from going to folders other than your inbox.

correspondence proceeds. I will keep people posted if a solution is reached from microsoft’s end.

Why is silk going up in price?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Silk is actually a very unreasonable material. You need 50 of wood, mithril or leather to make their cooldown item, but 100 silk.

Making the refined T5 leather and silk take 3 of their -salvaged- materials, mithril takes 2 and elder wood takes 3 again. So here it is just mithril getting more slack.

You need 3 damask bolts for -any- piece of gear, even if its mithril or leather, just for the insignia. Meaning that every weight set uses 18 bolts of damask (1800 silk bolts, 5400 scraps) just to start off with. Add to that the following to make the sets:

Cloth – 19 Damask 6 Elonian Leather (1900 Silk, 300 Leather <2200 refined materials, 6600 unrefined >)
Leather – 6 Damask 18 Elonian Leather (
600 Silk, 900 Leather <1500 refined materials, 4500 unrefined >)
Heavy – 7 Damask 16 Deldrimor Steel (+700 Silk, 800 Mithril <1500 refined materials, 3700 unrefined>)

Weapons take 3 planks, 3 steel and 4-6 assorted materials depending on the weapon, making them more material intensive, but the ease with which these materials can be obtained doesn’t match up to the effort it takes to gather silk.

People have a pretty good way to get both mithril and elder wood. Not only do you get tons of the stuff just salvaging, but you can easily make a lap through any 60+ map and get tons of it. In comparison, leather and silk are obtained only through salvaged goods and bags, and this means grinding.

It takes me roughly 8 hours to grind out 300 silk scraps for 1 damask bolt. It’s boring and tedious and thus even I cave in to buying this material though I try to avoid the TP whenever I can. Now of all other materials I have plenty, pretty much drowning in the stuff, you don’t need enough leather to ever run out and both wood and mithril are easily obtained.

I’d go for balancing out the need for materials, not lowering the over all amount of stuff needed, but easing up on the damask in favour of increasing the need for other materials. Either upping the other T5 materials to 100 each as well and lowering the amount of ascended materials, or dropping Silk to 50 per bolt, but upping the amount of ascended materials needed, as the only true problem I see at the moment is that silk is disproportionately more needed than the other materials, and takes perhaps the most grinding in game to get. Followed by leather and making wood and metals seem like a joke in their acquisition.

edit: forgive the underlines, cant find whats causing them.
edit 2: cleaned up some mithril-iron semantics.

heh. Yeah, same here. I have tried several times and can’t seem to get it to work. I managed to get into the factions beta some years back, though I don’t know how I managed that. Arena Net was much smaller then though.

Probably by having a certain amount of time spent weekly on GW1. One of the important things for beta tester selection is that the tester has enough time to actually test stuff, that and not being likely to trumpet out any new bit of info they uncover just in case it gets changed, though that second thing is generally what NDAs are for.

As far as I can make out, the problem seems to be mostly with hotmail gmail live and other google or microsoft based adresses. I’m not sure if anyone with a live or hotmail managed to get a signup mail, but if they did i’d really like to know about it so that I can be sure it’s not purely where I have my email. I tried to sign up immediately after the HoT site was announced though, so unless microsoft didnt like the sudden influx of emails sent by anet and decided to block mails from there or some other such weird occurance… I am fully out of ideas on how this can be fixed from my side.

Bumping. With betas reportedly being soon, I hope this issue will be resolved before we miss out =(

I took all the suggested steps to resolve possible issues and I’m assuming you’ll have to use an email that has an account linked to it to even optionally be considered for betas =( If the only problem is me receiving mails I am probably in the list over 40 times by now…

I’ll play a rev till 20. If I like it I’ll delete it, rename my current main, make a rev with my then ex-main’s name and bring my 80 rev into the jungle. (I’m already saving for the ascended gear)

If I don’t like it however, I’ll just grab my mesmer and plop off into the jungle.

20 levels should be enough to tell me if a class is enjoyable, and I’m not going to just go by a bunch of streams without getting my hands on some actual time spent breaking the class. No matter how much fun it looks like on the streams.

Perhaps I should at least level something to 20 on that new levelling system though… to have a comparison. Since ever since I came back from my break the word levelling has made me show teeth in the least kindly fashion.

I think there’s not really any way to take a precaution against… puppies… in RP.

Godmods happen in all kinds of RP and from what I’m gathering this is what you fear will happen. Regardless of class though, any class can RP themselves to be OP or near demigods, I suppose that whatever rules apply to current godmods apply to revenants. I haven’t had the pleasure of running into any RPing communities in game and mostly busy myself with creative writing rather than in-game RPs. In the end it is up to the writer’s own creativity to fit their power level to be on par with that of other players, lest they be forced to solo Teakettle to lay force to their claim of ultimate superiority…

As for how they all emerge at the same time, perhaps this is due to a “doorway” that was created either by Rytlock, or, more likely, the combined force of all stray souls in the mists (to compensate for the fact that a million revenants did not burst out sooner). Prior to this event there may not have been an escape, if you entered the mists and were not in any way exceptional, you just had no way out. The variable flow of time in the mists may well even justify varying lengths of time spent in the mists, or perhaps being born there. Or perhaps some people did get out sooner and doorways are temporary, but those that got out sooner found themselves needing to remain hidden, because they scared the people who could not place their strange abilities, a prominent character such as Rytlock, with all his ties and fame, may just have been what they needed to be able to step out of the shadows, without fear of persecution for their alien abilities.

I strongly suspect more background lore will be provided by, or perhaps even before, the launch of HoT. A game with lore as tight as this will probably long have had an explanation shelved, and is just waiting to seed it into the game or blast it out in a blog post.

Of what I have seen of revenant so far is that they have spent time in the mists, depending on how you want to play that, you might have limited recollection, or perhaps remember all sorts of weird and potentially illogical places, or even events from long long ago with just a slightly different twist. This might be confusing and might cause your character to argue about how, for instancem the foefire happened. Perhaps in your recollection “Those idiot Charr” tried to use Magdaer as a fuel source for their searing cauldrons or such things.

Also, the channeling of legends causes them to talk in your head! If that’d not a reason to play a character with a lessened sense of self or slight insanity issues, I don’t know what is!

As for mechanically, you could either technically “be” the legend you are chanelling, making you for instance mallyx in a body not quite his own and thus slightly less powerful than the actual boss wass, and possibly upset about that, or you could just be the same person flooded with ideas about how to do certain things even though you never really used to do them before.

Plenty of ways to be on par with the other members of your group really, just takes some fitting in and not really wanting to be an indestructible demigod yourself (or maybe wanting to be but being upset that you aren’t?) Who knows, the sky is the limit right?
