and was hoping I’d be able to throw ultra settings on everything and never dip below 60 fps XD.

The system you have quoted will perform well and play the game smoothly. This goal however, is not realistic from any gaming machine that currently exists.

You could pack the most powerful i7 into a box with dual titans and you will not get this performance on GW2. The game engine is simply not capable of those numbers on any configuration. I think you’ll be happy with the system you quoted, you should play smoothly on Ultra but establishing 60fps as a minimum is not realistic on this game.

I’m not sure then.

Normally, this error occurs when you’re attempting to run an incompatible version of an installer. This usually means you for example have a 64bit OS and are trying to run a 16 bit application. The 32bit OS can emulate 16 bit, but the x64 cannot. That is the only thing I have ever seen cause this error.

I’m assuming you’re running a 64 bit OS, are you sure you downloaded the correct version of the installer? I know this is probably grasping at straws here, I just can’t figure out why this would happen.

Sounds to me like it didn’t download correctly. Maybe the file you downloaded is corrupted because you should easily be able to run the game. Your laptop is more powerful then mine, and mine runs it fine on Windows 8.1.

I know it’s kind of a pain, but I recommend re-downloading the installer.

I used to enjoy leveling in this game, but the new trait system is just painfully terrible.

Honestly, this is the only real way to level now. Take an 80 into PvP and get enough tomes to bypass the entire thing. The trait system is terrible, makes it so that gaining a level gets you nothing 90% of the time.

Between the new trait system and the fact that the transmutation charges makes it expensive and wasteful to alter my look before level 80, all the fun has been taking out of leveling in this game. Once they remove tomes of knowledge (and they will) I’ll never make another new character again.

RNG is not.

Once again, they don’t get it. If they just put the skins in the Gem Store people would spend Gems to get them. What I won’t do is buy black lion keys for a chance to get one.

If I could change any one aspect of GW2, this RNG thing would probably #1 on my list. The skins are really nice, too bad I’ll never get one.

Are you planning to overclock the CPU? If not, then you can save some money by going with a 4770 instead of a 4770k. The CPU’s are identical, the only difference is that the ‘k’ model has an unlocked multiplier for overclocking. If this isn’t important to you, you can shave off $40-$50 here with no performance loss.

No, get a k series, the difference between k and non k is $10 and has been for nearly 2 years, don’t be an idiot and screw yourself on resale value because you want to save $10 :/

If you can get the K model for $10 more then yes, it’s worth it. When I bought my 4770k the price difference was about $45. I bought the K because I overclocked mine, but if you have no plan to do that then the price difference is not worth it. Right now, Newegg has the K on sale so the price difference is negligible.

You’re right though, if the price difference is that low, absolutely get the k series. If you think you might use overclocking at any point, you’ll want to have an unlocked multiplier.

As you can see, you’re being charged almost $200 just to put it together. If you’re not comfortable doing it yourself or don’t know anyone that can help you with it, then this might be money well spent. If however, you know how to do it and just want to save some time the $200 charge just to put it together is an unnecessary expense.

I went on Newegg.com and just quickly threw together a system with comparable stats and it comes out to just over $1k which is about 33% less then your quoted price. If you’re interested in seeing the parts I used, feel free to click any of the links:

CPU,Motherboard,Memory,Case,Power Supply,Video Card,,Hard Disk.

Again, this is just what I threw together in a couple minutes, you could modify any of these parts to fit your taste and still be well under the price you were quoted. I just did a quick look using major brands and products that I already know work well.

The advantages to the system you have quoted is that it’s the easiest way. Someone puts it together, tests everything, gets it up and running and just sends it to you. It also comes with the benefit of a warranty in case anything goes wrong (at least I assume it does.) The ‘do it yourself’ route, is a bit more work and the parts are all warrantied individually instead of all under one, meaning you could get a single bad part and have to ship it back and wait for replacement. In the end, it’s all about if you’re willing to do the work yourself or not. As an experienced builder, I put my system together in roughly an hour, it might take longer if you’re learning as you go but in my opinion it’s a much better way. It’s cheaper and I get the specific parts that I want in my system.

Jerky sound with new graphic card?

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Darth Llama.9217

Darth Llama.9217

A faster video card requires more CPU power to drive it. Your CPU is the issue here.

I’m sorry, but I don’t believe this to be true.

I won’t argue the assertion that the CPU is the likely bottleneck here, but it’s still fast enough to run this game. If the CPU could handle the game before, adding more GPU power does not adversely effect CPU performance. The extra GPU Performance does not somehow feed back and overwhelm the CPU. The slowest component or ‘bottlneck’ in the system just effectively establishes the overall maximum performance of the system as a whole based on it’s own limitation. That limitation has not changed from one GPU to the next.

The common denominator in the 2 games you’re having problems with is that they’re both online games. The two most likely causes of your issue seem to be either a network latency issue or perhaps an overall system power issue. The GTX 750 does not have an external PS connector (For the record, some 750 Ti’s don’t either) but it does draw significantly more power from your PCIE Slot then your old card. I’m not sure why switching GPU’s would cause a network issue, but there could be a factor here I’m not seeing.

Here is where I would start if I were you. I would power down the computer. Remove or unplug all peripherals installed in your system. Disable/remove sound card, optical drives, etc. Boot up and try to play the game with just the video card, no sound or anything non essential and see if the game is playable. If it is, then re-add your devices 1 at a time until the problem returns. That might at least help you narrow it down. If it’s a power issue, running the system with the ‘bare bones’ configuration could reduce your power drain enough to get the game to play.

Try playing with some settings and hardware configurations before you go out and spend money on new components that might not even be your problem.

Half the reason I tried this game was that it was the first MMO I had seen that didn’t have ugly, blocky, washed out water color looking graphics.

I understand that most MMO’s do this to allow people with low spec machines to run their game, but it just makes everything look like a cheap WoW Copy. GW2 is the most unique looking of all the MMO Games. I have a friend who doesn’t play MMO’s at all, and he was watching me and a friend play a few games. The only one he could identify right away was GW2.

Everything else looks the same, GW2 stands out graphically. The game isn’t perfect, but when it came to the graphics they really did it right. From the textures to the character animations, it stands out above other games.

On max settings the game is stunning.

Thanks for your reply, is there any chance that we can get “Llama” removed from the filter? It’s hardly an offensive term.

I’m wondering if this might be a port issue or something with your NAT. If you haven’t tried already, try going from your PC straight into your Modem without using a router.

If you’re trying on a laptop or a PC with a wireless connection, you can also try maybe taking your PC to a friends house and seeing if it works there. Darth Llama.9217

I guess it’s all in your opinion of what you find fun. I have an 80 Guardian, Warrior, Ranger, and Necro and find them all fun. Lately though, I have been having more fun on my Necro then the others.

There are many paths you can go with this class. Some run Power ‘Zerker’ Builds, some run Condition or ‘Conditionmancer’ Builds and then there is the popular ‘Minion Mancer’ that uses pets. All are very viable in PVE. Personally, I run a Conditionmancer and I love it. It doesn’t have the punch against single targets that a power build has, but the AOE and survivability is spectacular. I can take down huge mobs with ease.

Give it a shot, worst that can happen is you don’t like it and you delete him/her. I’m glad I tried the Necromancer, I am really enjoying it. I run 2/6/0/6/0 in all Rabid Gear/Weapons. Based on Nemisis Conditionmancer build but with more focus on Wells. Quite fun.

Upgrading my rig: CPU or GPU?

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Darth Llama.9217

Darth Llama.9217

If you’re going to upgrade one or the other, it would be your CPU. Running 2 660 TI’s in SLI is more then enough, you would have to go with a real high end card to notice a real improvement.

I’m running a 4770k OC’d to 4.2GHZ on a single 660Ti OC (2GB) and I get right around 35-45 FPS in WvW. Very playable even in huge zergs. Going up to a 3770k should put you at least where I am if not more due to you having more GPU Power.

Honestly though, looking at your current setup, I’m surprised you’re having any issue at all. Your system is more then capable, I don’t know if 40 FPS as a minimum in WvW Zerg is a reasonable expectation of any system. The game has limitations that aren’t on your end and honestly I think you’re probably running it about as good as it’s going to get. You might get a marginal improvement if you dropped some serious money, but I doubt it would be worth it. My i7 never goes above 40% load even in WvW. The power is there, the game just doesn’t use it.

State of Conditionmancer?

in Necromancer

Posted by: Darth Llama.9217

Darth Llama.9217

I currently run 2/6/0/6/0 Condition Build and I love it.

I play it basically the same in PVE, TPvP, and WvW (mostly Zerging) and I really enjoy it. I run Scepter/Dagger and Staff in full Rabid Gear with Krait Runes.

I was going to try the Power version, but decided against it. The way I see it, if I want a power based ‘zerker’ class I’m going to go with my Guardian or Warror. That or I’ll make a Thief. I wanted to play a Necro at what I personally feel they’re best at and that was Condition Damage and AOE.

I’m not saying the Necro Power Build isn’t good.. it is really good. Just not for me. A guy in my Guild runs the power build and is also very successful. One thing I like about the Necro class is that it seems to have more viable builds then other classes. The Condition, Power and Minion Master builds are all viable ways to go.

Well I was planning to level a guardian and a necromancer but well… the trait system has stopped me.

I can either play without traits until eventually I can get to the right level to unlock them (Yay level 50+ stuff for a level 40 trait) or I can grind skill points and gold for them.

Or I can just not bother with making anything new.

I’m in the same boat.

I want to make an engineer, but this new trait system is horrible. I had a Necromancer that was level 55 on April 15th when the patch hit. Until April 14th I was having fun leveling my character, trying different trait and skill combinations and actually learning the class. After April 15th the leveling process became mundane, bland, boring and all together horrible. I had 2 trait points to spend.. 2. I did what everyone is doing, I ran EoTM trains to get to 80 then started having fun again.

I want to make an Engineer, but this new system sucks so bad I probably won’t be able to. I really don’t want to grind champ train/EoTM for 79 levels. Leveling in GW2 is no longer fun at all.

I’m going with this one once I get to 80. Seems a solid build, but I’m unsure if any recent changes have any effect on this build.

It’s a little weak vs. single targets, but seems a solid build for AOE damage with a little support. It’s a long video, but if you just watch the first few min there is a table of contents you can use to skip to the parts of the video that you want to see.

If someone has a better Condition based AOE build, by all means please share.

Yeah, RtW in PVE is just a wasted trait. I love it in WvW, but the AI doesn’t try to dodge so I’m not really concerned with my projectile speed as it doesn’t actually add any DPS since your attack speed doesn’t increase.

I swap it for something better in PVE, usually I change it to Remorseless.

In my experience, as long as you don’t join groups that specify ‘speed runs’ you’re usually fine. Speed Runners want specific combinations and none of those combos involve Ranger.

The best advice though is to just go with Guild Members. I run dungeons with my guild all the time and do just fine. Playing with a Guild lets you play the way you want instead of with elitist PUG groups that insist that if you don’t play their way you’re ‘wrong.’

Darth Llama.9217

The advice given in Map Chat was not bad advice. Bear + Bow in PVE does make leveling very easy. As for what is the ‘best’ or ‘worst’ build it’s really all just nothing but opinion and personal preference.

I ran Bear + Bow when I first started and eventually found combinations better for me. Personally, I think Drakes tank as good as bears but bring more DPS. Plus their tail swipe is a blast finisher inside the healing spring so that’s another plus.

If I see a Ranger running a Bear, I don’t just assume they are bad and neither should anyone else. I have had quite a few players surprise me in both positive and negative ways, you can’t just judge them by their pet or their weapon choice. People should spend more time worrying about what they are doing and less time worrying about how others play the game. A lot of good Rangers have started off using this combination and learned better methods as they played more. Nothing wrong with newer players taking the easiest path to learn a class.

I have to say I kind of agree with the OP. I’m still fairly new to Necro, I’m up to level 62 and still playing around trying to figure out what kind of build I like. I have redone my traits a few times because every build I have seen always has at least 10 points into Soul Reaping, and I’m not getting why. I almost never use DS, I don’t know if I just don’t get it or what, but I don’t see the point at all.

The only time I ever use it is if all my AOE’s are on cooldown I’ll pop DS and use the #4 for some AOE while my real skills cool down. I’m perfectly willing to accept the possibility that it’s just me and I don’t get it, but I see at least a couple people have the same experience. I just don’t get the point of DS at all, the part I don’t like is it’s our ‘unique class mechanic’ and if it were removed tomorrow I wouldn’t even notice the difference.

This patch has been really awesome for the most part, but the trait change is definitely an exception. This change has greatly lowered the effectiveness and the variety of lower level characters and put an even bigger gap between low levels and ‘true’ level 80’s.

My level 50 Necro went from being able to level pretty easily to being greatly handicapped and has turned the leveling process into a real struggle. I honestly hope Anet sees the error in this and changes this part of the update.

Everything else was so great and done so well, and this part was just so wrong. Honestly, there was nothing wrong with the trait system the way it was. I really hope this changes soon.

PvE build - is it viable?

I ran Sword/Axe for a while.. I wanted to do something ‘different.’ In the end, I realized that ‘different’ just meant worse in this case and went back to the GS.

I really like a lot of the skills for Sword/Axe, it was fun to play but the damage was obviously lacking. It’s certainly viable in PVE, if you want to run it you can it’s just not ‘optimal.’ I did it for a while because it was fun but ultimately went back to the GS.

In the end, you should go with what’s fun for you.

we dont really know if this will continue to be the case. Time will tell

I have gotten transmutations stones as late as yesterday for doing map-completion.
Those stones can be transformed into Charges.
And thus I get loads of free Charges.

Of course you have. Nothing has changed yet, that will happen after the 15th. And people (including me) are wondering if you still get transmutation stones (or its equivalent) from map completion after the 15th.

From what I’m getting..

Every time you change the look of an item, it costs 1 charge to do it.

The regular transmutation stones are converted at a rate of 3 stones = 1 charge.

So if they leave the stones in, and just use them as currency to buy charges then that means while completing a map used to allow you to transmute 3 items of level 79 or lower, you can now transmute only 1 item, but of any level.

Again, this is my assumption.. they haven’t said for sure.. but if this is the system, I have very mixed emotions. While I like the fact that level 79 and level 80 gear no loner use different transmutation, it’s going to make the system hard to use if completing a map only lets you change the look of 1 single item 1 time only.

Deadly Crusaders [DEAD] is a PVX/PvP/WvW guild that’s over 450 strong on Blackgate. We are a large but friendly group and strictly devoted to a friendly and helpful gaming environment. We do all PVE Content such as Dungeon Runs, Fractals, Living Story, Zone Completion help, etc. We also do regular WvW Nights, some PvP and we have other events like Guild Raffles which offer some nice prizes.

We do have a 100% Rep requirement, but outside of that the only requirement is the desire to play and have fun. We have a guild site that you can find here with a schedule of events and all the information you need. Also you can feel free to message me in game or here on the GW2 Forums and I’ll be happy to help anyway that I can.

You might also be interested in Deadly Crusaders [DEAD.] We’re one of the largest guilds on BG, but we’re very social and welcoming of new players to the guild. We do Guild Missions multiple times per week for those that can’t make one of the times so that everyone can get in on it. We have a Guild Mission day on Sunday and on Wednesday. While the Wednesday time might be a little early for you, the Sunday one might fit your needs.

We’re very focused on finding groups for people within the guild rather it’s for Story or Explorable Dungeons, Fractals, World Vs. World, anything you want to do. We have regular guild events, raffles and games for Guild Members and do our best to help create a fun environment. If you’re interested, please feel free to check out our guild site here. Hi Star Fox,

I think that Deadly Crusaders [DEAD] could be the guild for you. Don’t let the guilds large size fool you, we’re a very friendly and social guild and always very welcoming of new members. We run Guild Missions twice a week and also have regular nights for dungeons (Story and Exp), Fractals, and World vs. World. We aslo do special events just for guild members, things like Raffles, Races, and other stuff and offer some pretty nice prizes. Just little things to foster sociability within the guild.

Have a look at our site here and feel free to sign up if interested and we’ll get you an invite right away. You can also whisper me in game or PM me here on the forums. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Can Rangers tank in PvE like Necromancers?

In my experience, I always use Greatsword when ‘tanking.’ Why? Because the auto attack #3 is an automatic evade. Every 3rd attack misses you automatically. Would you take a trait that gave you 33% damage resist? Because that’s basically what it does.

I pull out the GS, put down a healing spring and have a drake who’s tail strike is a blast finisher and I can hold against almost anything in overworld PVE. GS Damage outside of Maul is pretty pathetic, but it’s a good weapon for survivability.
