So I am looking for a Ranger Build that be great for PvE and WvW. My Ranger is only Currently 11 and I love her despite all the flames I see in the forums about how rangers aren’t that good. I tried Ele ,Guardian and thief, but Rangers seems to strike me the most. So it be my next lvl 80!!!

So any tips and tricks, or links to other post will be helpful.
I want to be able to play range but also be able to play close if I have to.
I am more of a Aggressive Offensive player(can be reckless at times) but I like to have defense so I can get away or get distance from my enemy. so I think imma need a Power/Perc/Crit mixed in with sum toughness?
I am also seeing alot of Rangers with GS now whats sup with that?

Biggest tip I can give you is do what you like and don’t let other people talk you out of playing the class you like. Ranger certainly has issues, there are things that could use some serious work, but they’re a VERY fun class to play. I have a level 80 Warrior, Guardian, Ranger, and an Ele that’s in the high 70’s. The Ranger is by far my favorite to play and I’m quite powerful and versatile.

The link provided above has some really good build advice. I personally use a variation of the Hybrid Beastmaster which was detailed here. Rangers don’t actually have a ‘standard’ build or anything that most people run. Most Rangers I run into are all types of different builds with different pets and weapons. It really is a class that’s best left to your personal taste.

It’s a fun class, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. There are still things that need to be fixed, but the class is still fun to play.

Short answer is.. depends who you ask.

Most of the replies you’ll get are going to tell you that we still suck and don’t bother. There was a nerf to quickness that made a portion of the more popular Ranger builds weaker and that has some people upset. It should be noted that this nerf wasn’t Ranger specific, it was a global change to the ability but it still has an effect on our class.

If you use Great Sword as one of your weapons, then you did get a buff since GS was given a boost for Rangers in the latest patch. If you don’t use GS then things are basically the same as when you left. While the GS boost is nice and a good start, there is still a long way to go before Ranger will be viable for Dungeon runs.

I personally enjoy playing my Ranger, but I limit my Ranger to open world PVE. The truth is, if you want to be well rounded and effective then you’re still better off choosing a different class.

If you’re talking about PVE then it doesn’t surprise me to see Ranger at the top of the list. I have a Level 80 Warrior, Guardian and Ranger and I’m a few levels from 80 on an Elementalist and the Ranger is my favorite for clearing zones and PVE content.

I run balanced builds on all my characters, no glass cannons and while each class has it’s advantages my Ranger is second only to my Guardian in general Survivability. Of course, this comes with the exception that my Ranger is pet dependent, without the pet he’s not nearly as good. My Ranger has very good damage output (when counting pet damage) and does very well in almost every PVE situation.

If you’re talking Dungeons then my Ranger would be dead last on the list to the point where I won’t even bring him to begin with. The other 3 (Guardian, Warrior, Ele) are great in dungeons, and bring a lot to any party they are with.

I honestly don’t get anyone that says Rangers suck in PVE, I don’t know what they’re doing wrong but my Ranger is a PVE Powerhouse. I don’t PvP or WvW so I can’t speak to that at all.

I use a slight variation of the Hybrid Beastmaster Build that was posted here, if anyone is curious. It’s very effective in PVE.

Anet won’t be happy until Rangers are completely extinct.

I love my Ranger, but if I’m doing dungeons I run my Warrior or my Guardian. Most people are nice and won’t kick someone for being a Ranger (neither will I,) but I still know I’m more of a burden then a boon so I just one of my other characters.

I still like playing my Ranger, but clearly Anet doesn’t want them in dungeons or doing anything other then running around solo in PVE. Easier to just do what they want and play a different class in Dungeons.

And yes, Ranger is by far the weakest Profession. Despite this fact, they continue to get nerfed in every patch. Honestly, if a dungeon group kicked me for being a Ranger, I wouldn’t even blame them. I just prefer to have the courtesy to not put people in that position to begin with. For Dungeons I’ll just use one of the ‘Anet approved classes for Dungeons.’ They have made it quite clear they don’t want anyone but Warriors, Guardians or Mesmers in Dungeons. Elementalist is still viable for now but I’m sure they’ll nerf them out next.

You could literally just change the word Engineer in that video to Ranger and it would still apply perfectly.

I don’t want to reveal “what goes in the sausage” but there are several variables that affect how often some of the meta-events run. The sole change that was made to this event in this update was increasing the restart time for the event to make it comparable to other “boss” style meta events.

So the timer is now comparable to other boss events, but can we make the actual event comparable to other boss events and not something that can have the “boss” be zerg steamrolled in less than 15 seconds? It’s not even fun.

That would actually give people time to get there and make the 2 hour wait (or whatever the timer is now) actually feel like it’s worth it. The Wurm boss fight is even worse, you have to be camping there at the time of the pre-event start, basically, to even have a chance since the boss gets downed in <10 seconds.

Last week, there was a Wurm event on my server (Blackgate) where the Wurm died so fast the event never actually triggered and there was no chest. The Wurm was literally dead before it even spawned in all the way.

The Maw is only slightly better, I did the Maw earlier today and he was dead in about 10-12 seconds. As it is, I stopped doing the very last pre event where you destroy the 3 portals because if you’re too far away from the boss, you can’t get back in time to get in a hit before he dies. Both these ‘bosses’ need a serious buff.

I’m so glad to see other people feel this way too.

I agree 100%, I would like to see some more elegant and realistic looking Greatswords. Not all of us want to look like rejects from Final Fantasy.

On the one hand, I don’t like this because it feels like they are really trying to force Rangers into using Great Swords.

On the other hand.. at this point I’m just happy to get anything for Ranger that isn’t a step backward. I was using SB with Axe/Warhorn but I have switched to Short Bow/Great Sword because that’s the only thing that gets any attention for us.

I’m enjoying it.. it’s fun and the GS seems rather effective. It’s sad that we’ll all end up with the exact same build one day, but at least that 1 single build might actually be viable.

I honestly don’t think ANet will ever fix rangers. It’s been what 7 months almost and all I keep seeing is more and more nails being driven into the ranger coffin.

Yup pretty much this, eventually I will just quit the Ranger and the game.

Sadly, I believe at this point that they want people to quit playing Rangers.

They have looked at the class and they are either unable or unwilling to do anything to help Rangers so instead they’re trying to drive people away from playing it. In the end, they want you to be a Warrior or a Guardian for whatever reason.

I just wish they would be honest about what they’re trying to do.

I’m so sick of people complaining over imbalance in WvW and as a result they nerf something across the board. I don’t give a rats kitten about WvW and PvP and I’m tired of being punished based on complaints in those areas.

Will it ever actually happen? No.. but it’s a nice thought.

Honestly, I think they should just grant this request as it’s what they want anyway. It’s clear that they don’t want people playing Rangers so just do it already. Give Rangers a free class swap and an amount of gold based on their level to cover gear.

Then just remove the class and be done with it. I’m tired of them just slowly destroying it month by month in attempt to get people to stop playing it. I love my Ranger but I know every month that the patch will take something else away from me and I’m sick of it.

I’ll just play my Warrior and Guardian which is exactly what they want anyway.

I would be happy if they just stopped nerfing classes because other classes suck. If Necro’s are weak, don’t nerf Guardians to compensate, re-evaluate the weaker class and lift them up instead of lowering everyone else.

I personally would love to see 1 dev for each class. Someone that knows the class and understands it’s strengths and weaknesses. It would be nice if people that played Engineers, Necros and Rangers felt like someone was speaking up for them behind closed doors.

I am going to try to help you here although I think you went a bit over the top on the complaint.

You’re probably right.

I find the story to be more of a chore then anything else, and I admit I just wanted to blast through it. I rarely read anything because I personally just don’t care for it and want to get it over with. Don’t get me wrong, I love the game.. play all the time and have a ton of fun. I just don’t like the personal story and I was trying to just get it over with as quickly as possible.

Just randomly mashing buttons worked fine on the first 2 guys, but by the third one I was so annoyed already that I admit I didn’t give it much effort. I’ll use your tips and get past it, once I unlock the Vendor for Whispers armor I’ll probably just stop there. I’m sure the story is great for many, it’s just not for me and that’s my thing.

I apologize if my initial post seemed over the top or more angry then it needed to be. There is enough negativity on this forum without me contributing to that. I appreciate your tips and I’ll put them to good use. Thank you very much.

Despite my lack of interest in the personal story, this game is still great.

I have really enjoyed most things in this game so far, but today I was playing my Sylvari Ranger and following the Whispers path. There is a part where you have to ‘win a drinking contest’ to rescue Demmi from some pirates.

This is, without a doubt.. the worst thing I have seen in this game. How the heck is this even done? I sat there mindlessly mashing keys for a half an hour before I just gave up. If you haven’t played this, you have an opponent, and your 1-5 bar is options that you use to drink. You mash buttons pointlessly till it says you win. I did this for the first 2, but the 3rd guy you have to beat (yes, you have to endure this idiocy 3 times) just never stops. You mash buttons forever until you get bored and quit.

I think I’m done with the personal story with this character.. seriously, who thinks this is fun? I usually try to buck the trend and be positive on the forums, but right now I’m just angry and shocked at how incredibly stupid this is. Is there a trick or cheat I can use to get past this horribly mind numbing and ridiculous excuse for a story? I seriously can’t believe how stupid this is, it’s hard to imagine that someone sat down and designed this part thinking anyone would actually find it fun.

So, I have been trying this build in PVE and I have to say it’s remarkably effective. I find I’m easily able to handle even good sized groups of foes that are at my level or even slightly higher. Thanks for posting this build, it’s been quite helpful. I might tweak a few things for PVE like what Pets I’m using and maybe change out a skill but the core concept is very solid.

No, I prefer to try and find something fun to do.

I have no interest in grinding for months for the 1/10000 chance at a precursor.

If I do happen to find one, I’ll sell it without a 2nd thought.

It’s kind of funny that people are actually angry about this. This change clearly needs to be made.

Even with this change, if you do all the events in a day (Jormag, Shatterer, Teq, Golem, Maw, Fire Ele, Shadow Behemoth, Worm) you’ll get 8 Rares a day.. guaranteed. Plus whatever else happens to be in the regular chest.

I realize that’s not always possible as it takes a considerable time window to hit EVERY event, but it can still be done every single day. I’m totally cool with that. And to those that say this makes playing Alts pointless, that’s absolutely hillarious. The only reason to play an Alt is for looting events? Not for the fun of trying another class or trying something different.. no.. the only point is to farm these events for guaranteed drops that didn’t even exist 3 weeks ago.

Title pretty much says it, first dungeon .. AC story. Wasn’t expecting ez mode, but the difficultly is absurd for story mode/first timers/first dungeon.

Like the game, love leveling, absolutely hate dungeons so far.

As a warrior tank, I was useless. Damage seemed unmanageable. Mobs had awkward ago, maybe floor plates but it wasnt clear at all. In fact, the whole thing didnt seem to match the same quality I found open world.

I had the same experience you did, but trust me.. AC Story is a very bad example of the ‘typical’ dungeon experience.

I know I’ll get blasted and made fun of for this, but in my opinion AC Story Mode is the single hardest thing in all of GW2. It’s beyond crazy, over the top and ridiculously stupid to the point of being absolutely no fun. I’m not a ‘pro’ at this game, but I’m pretty good. I run other dungeons all the time and I have never had even close to as much trouble as I had with AC Story. The first time I ran another dungeon after that, I was expecting the worst and found it was 100 times easier then AC.

Don’t let it deter you from trying other dungeons, it’s absolutely awful the way they made AC one of the first dungeons you can do but by far the hardest. CM is a far better choice for early dungeon adventure. I won’t touch AC in any mode under level 80. Other dungeons with exception of Arah are a cake walk compared to AC. Try another dungeon and you’ll see, they’re not hard at all.

Other then the Omnomberry part, I don’t understand a word of that. lol

I have no idea what dosh means. I was assuming they take the tokens and use them to buy rare (yellows) which they then salvage. Apparently though, they have some way of improving the drops and they’re doing it that way.

Either way, if that’s what’s fun for them then who am I to say it should be taken away? Doesn’t sound like fun to me, so I simply don’t do it. Unless it’s causing a problem that impacts the game quality for other players I’m anti-nerf.

I say no to nerf, even though I personally don’t get how people even do this.

I run COF all the time because I’m gearing 2 characters and need the tokens. I don’t make anything of COF Path 1, I don’t know where people are getting all this money from. I had one time I found an exotic shield that sold for 6GP, otherwise it’s extremely rare for me to get anything better then a green that’s worth 2 silver.

None the less, if people can profit off it then good for them. It doesn’t hurt me or interfere with my gaming experience so have at it. ANet would be better served using their time to make other game activities more profitable to give people more options.

I rather stay out of these types of CoF runs with my warrior than rebuilding him to a squishy one trick pony.

I enjoy my balanced spec which works perfectly fine everywhere except in the CoF speedrun groups. Which I dont care about anyways, I dont care if it’s a run at optimal time or if it takes a while longer, it’s still a very short run either way.

I tried the squishy type of warrior a while after hitting 80, didnt enjoy it one bit.

In the end its up to the creators of a group. However, there is one thing I hate when I see it, guild groups centered around speed runs instead of picking whichever guildy that wants to go. It hasnt happened to me, but I’ve seen it happen in my own guild.

“Looking for x berserkser for CoF” and so on in guild chat. I personally think that when you are in a guild you try and bring guildies, even if they might not have your exact views on spec/gear. Otherwise, dont advertise in guild chat.

As someone who also plays a balanced warrior build, I agree 100%.

Your DPS is always 0 when you’re dead.

I also agree about the guild thing, I’ll go with anyone from my guild with any build. Luckily, my guild is really good about that so it’s easy to find groups.

First, I’ll apologize if this is in the wrong section. I know there is a section for dungeon discussion, but this isn’t about a specific dungeon or tactic it’s about a suggestion to fix dungeon population problems.

As many might have noticed, there are pretty much 2 Dungeons (AC and COF) that are very easy to find groups for. There are other dungeons that stand completely empty and trying to get a group together is very difficult (HoTW, Sorrows Embrace.) So here is an idea to kind of promote those dungeons and get people to check them out. How about having a week or two where one dungeon is the ‘featured’ dungeon. During this period, doing Story Mode might net a little extra gold, and doing explorable modes will yield 80 tokens per path instead of the normal 60. This way, you don’t drive people out of their ‘favorite dungeons,’ but instead offer a little incentive to get people to try something different for a change.

Honor of the Waves for example, is a very fun dungeon, so is CM, and many others but no one runs them. Maybe something like this would encourage people to try something new for a week or 2 and find other dungeons that they enjoy? I know a lot of people run these for specific gear, for example COF is the only Dungeon where you can get Berserker Gear and that makes it popular so maybe it would also help to have a look at the stats on the gear? Sorrows Embrace though offers both Soldiers and Knights sets (both very popular) and yet no one runs it. Maybe something like this would change that?

This idea was first thought of by a buddy of mine who I keep trying to get to post it, maybe someone else thinks it’s a good idea too? What do you guys think?

While I am not in favor of this idea, I understand where the OP is coming from.

You don’t want to be forced into having to join a group just to get the particular armor you want. I get that, it makes sense, but think of the other side of the argument on that. Some of us have worked through these dungeons and ‘earned’ the right to have these skins, is that fair to those players? I have 2 characters that I have geared out in full dungeon themed armor and it took a while to pull off. It would leave a little bit of a bad taste for me to know that someone else got the same thing my just playing and doing daily missions while I spent the time with my guild and PUG’s trying to bank enough tokens.

I think a good middle ground would be if more armor skins were available in the Gem Shop. This would give people that didn’t want to run dungeons more options for their looks without stepping on the ‘prestige’ that earning a full dungeon set brings. Solo players could trade in gold for gems to get skins, or spend a very small amount of cash for them. Alternatively, there could even be skins that are available from Laurels but not the same ones you get from Dungeons.

In my opinion, this is the best middle ground, most people that play GW2 agree that one thing this game badly needs is more armor skins.

I think you’ll like elementalist.

It takes skill to play – I would tick a box on that one…you have 4 attunements each which have a purpose. Being in the right attunement at the right time is important if you want to play an elementalist effectively:

Fire: Damage, Water: Healing/Support, Air: Speed and Evasion, Earth: Defensive/Condition Damage.

The weapons you choose determines your play style. So staff has long range aoe and support. Daggers are in your face and gives great mobility and melee support. Scepter is somewhere in between i guess.

I had a guardian originally. But I got talked into playing elementalist by a friend and fell in love with it ever since. Maybe you’ll enjoy it too!

I would try Elementalist for all the reasons listed. Based on your love of AOE, Staff Build might be more your thing then D/D, but you might like the degree of skill required to pull off D/D successfully. You’ll just have to play around with those 2 to see what you like.

The world can use more Staff Elementalists, we are not as many in number as our D/D brethren.

I think that saying ‘most’ groups is a bit of an over exaggeration isn’t it?

Yes, there are posts from people that just want this specific group for one specific dungeon, but it’s absolutely not the majority. I don’t have a Zerker Warrior and I get into Dungeon Groups all the time. Only one time did I have an issue with this, I joined a group with my Warrior (balanced build, half Zerker half Knights) and the group asked me to ping my gear in chat. I laughed, left the group, joined a new one and was off and playing.

The honest fact is, these ‘Zerker only’ groups are a small portion and no where close to the majority. These groups are easy to avoid, just don’t bother with those posts or any that just say speed run or farming run. I see all kinds of other classes in groups with me for COF including Rangers, Necro’s, Engineers, etc.

Let the Zerker groups have their fun, they aren’t hurting anyone.

I’m happy with Exotics on Accessories. If I could get Ascended for just Laurels then I would, but I’m not going to spend Ecto as well for such a small stat increase. The only reason I even have Ascended Amulets on 2 of my characters is because they’re like a free reward for things I do anyway (daily goals.)

I don’t feel underpowered at all. I have a level 80 Warrior and a Level 80 Guardian and I’m now working on an Elementalist. I really enjoy the class and feel at least on par with my other 2 characters when they were that level. Add in how well rounded the class is and I am quite happy with Elemenatlist. I might not do the absolute most damage of anyone, but I’m still very respectable. Plus I can buff the party and put down some pretty good heals. The diversity of the Elemantalist is rivaled only by the Guardian in my opinion. I quite enjoy the class.

I’m just playing your standard 0/10/0/30/30 using a staff.

Definitely work on fixing the core game before worrying about new content.

And if that new content includes any type of new tier for gear the scrap it completely.

I will never believe that people are paying thousands of dollars for in game items. I’m not calling ANYONE here a liar, I have no doubt that there are tons of stories people tell about spending that much, but I absolutely can’t believe that.

There are Legendary items on the TP that would cost more then a mid sized car if bought with cash. I don’t believe for a second that anyone is spending that much money on Video Game items. That’s pure insanity.

The most fair solution is to keep Guesting but make it so that guests can’t get chests from Dragon Events. These chests should be available only on your home server.

People are still able to play with their friends, and they can get loot on their own server. Fair to everyone.

Guesting has made Dragon Events impossible on Blackgate. Dragon zones and Queensdale have been pushing to overflow 24/7.

I have to agree with the OP, enough with guesting. If you want to play on another server, move to that server.

People keep telling me they’re still available in game, but I haven’t seen one in months. I’m pretty sure they made them Gem Store only and just didn’t say anything about it.

Neither. Blasting staff has no effect on Meteor Shower.

The fix for this is simple..

People flock to these events because they’re one of the very few places in this game where you have a chance of getting halfway useful loot. The reason everyone swarms these events is because outside of running dungeons, they can’t make money anywhere else.

Maybe if there were other places where loot was possible, people would spend time doing that instead of flooding these events. What you’re seeing now is the flood gates opening after all this time of people being suffocated for loot. I don’t particularly enjoy these events either, but I do them with both my 80’s every day because I’m broke and can’t afford anything if I don’t. My only other option is getting a group together for a dungeon run.

Up the general drops from PVE, Zone Completion, Hearts, Group Events etc and people will spread out more. People will flock to where the loot is.. simple as that.

Most people dont’ have nearly that much money. While I could afford it, I’m unwilling to because it’s money spent on something I don’t care about.

Why would anyone be impressed by Sunrise? Legendary weapons just signify that you spend tons of time playing. Some of us couldn’t care less about impressing others.

If you enjoy WvW then great.. play it and have fun, it’s simply not for everyone.

Except for, you know, Fractals. Which we enjoy doing when we have competent people. Also we don’t settle for second-best, that’s not who we are and not how we want to play. We joined this game because it had a gear plateau that was fairly casual and we could enjoy the game simply for what it was instead of worrying about grinding gear, which is exactly what we’d be doing when we’re getting to the point of only getting on to do Dailies.

Not having the best gear means we’re not playing the best way possible, which is how we play our games. All I want to know is if they are going to continue to add more ways to obtain this gear other than teaming up with people we don’t like or getting on to do Dailies everyday for 3+ months per character.

I play casually as well, and I totally understand what you’re talking about. I’m just used to the idea that if you want ‘the best’ in a game like this it usually means you have to devote far more time then I would ever consider. To me personally, I don’t need ‘the best’ to enjoy the game, but it’s always nice to have something to work toward.

I certainly wouldn’t object to them putting in a better way of getting this gear, but it seems to me after the last update that they are going in the exact opposite direction. The newer items not only require more laurels but Ecto as well. I think Arena Net wants Ascended Items to be reserved for those that put in significant time which sadly will rule out players like you and I.

Please explain what’s wrong with representing the guild you’re in? Either you’re a member or you’re not. If you don’t want to represent a guild, you’re motives are questionable and a kick is warranted under certain circumstances. A guild wants to achieve it’s goals. In many cases that means people either co-operate or get out.

I’m in one guild.. one guild only. When I joined my current guild, I left my old guild and I rep on all my characters 100% of the time. Why? Because I like my guild, I want to help them out and represent my group. If I didn’t then it would be pointless to be in the guild to begin with.

Aside from clicking ‘Represent’ in the Guild Panel, my Guild asks absolutely nothing else from me. I do events with them when I feel like it and other times I filter out Guild Chat and do my own thing. I don’t get why anyone would have an issue with Representing their guild.

I have fought the Behemoth a dozen times since the patch and in every fight someone has gotten Final Rest. I don’t have one yet, but they’re definitely very common now. Watch the price on the TP, it was once several hundred gold and now it’s what? 16G?

They’re a dime a dozen.

I don’t mean to sound harsh, but if you feel that the process for Ascended Gear is too much then just simply don’t do it. There is absolutely nothing in this game that requires you to have Ascended Gear, the stats are fairly nice but not so much better that you can’t play with far easier to obtain exotics instead.

I’m not really sure why people feel they have to have everything in order to succeed in this game. For example, I think the process for Legendary Weapons is completely ridiculous, so I simply don’t do it. I’m more then happy just using my Exotic Weapons and spending my time doing things that are more fun for me.

If the process isn’t something you enjoy, just skip it. It’s really that easy.

I’m generally pretty favorable of the updates and the general course of the game but this is obviously ridiculous. Charging 45 Laurels and 50 Ecto is just ridiculous. This was definitely one of the worst ideas ANet has ever had.

There is already PvP and WvW modes.. why would we need dueling? Just so we can litter the PVE zones with people fighting each other?

The way I understand it from previous talks with support is that they like to get as many bots as possible in one large wave. I had an issue a while back with Bots that I had reported several days in a row, then one day they were just all gone. Just because you don’t see them banned right away doesn’t mean that they won’t be gone soon.

I was lead to believe that using the in game reporting function was sufficient, but if you don’t feel that’s working I would do Healix suggested and send the link to Support.

Honestly, inflation I’m not too worried with.

I’m more worried about these events sucking players out of every other aspect of the game, because they’re currently sooooo incredibly rewarding for the amount of effort required.

So instead of cursed shores and cof p1 they are doing world events,

Now people have another option other then just grinding the same dungeon(s) over and over. This new update has pulled people back out into the world, and today the world has been more full of players then it’s ever been.

It’s very simple, the players wanted better loot and they will gravitate to whatever source offers it. This update has pulled people out of the dungeons and into the over world. Dungeons will still get run, but now there is actually another option.

Allowing people options that are all rewarding is in no way a bad thing. Making people grind over and over for little to no benefit is a trend that needs to continue to decline.
