Returning player question re: outfit changes.

Because town clothes don’t share the same mesh as the various armor classes. So the helms were made wearable in combat, and the outfits were made wearable in combat, and anything that didn’t fit with the combat moves was made into a tonic. There’s an extensive thread on it, as Inculpatus has said.

Is that extensive thread going to basically say “couldn’t be bothered to maintain the older superior level of customization we previously provided after we added the new feature of allowing players to use outfits in combat " ..?

Because I’m not sure I need an extensive thread to reach that conclusion, and it sure sounds like that’s how things can ultimately be summarized. I’m also not even remotely convinced that being allowed to use outfits in combat is worth the loss of being able to pick and choose which outfit pieces to wear. As someone who has no plans of dressing up like a chef while fighting the undead the ability to use outfits in combat is meaningless to me. The loss of being able to cobble a unique outfit together from different town-clothing pieces, however, is a significant loss.

A few of the responses in this thread feel like they’re coming straight out of ANET’s marketing speech. “You’ve lost the features you care most about but that’s a good thing! Truly!”. I spent real money on town clothes based on how they used to work at the time I made those purchases, and I’m not at all thrilled that all that money has now apparently been wasted. I didn’t purchase town clothing to use in combat, and I didn’t purchase town clothing sets for their entire look but rather for how the individual elements in those sets could be used and combined to make different outfits.

An extensive thread isn’t going to make me feel like I got cheated any less.

Yes, you can no longer mix-and-match. It was changed as part of the Wardrobe which allows for greater flexibility with most skins.

You can read about the changes and the decisions concerning the Wardrobe in the News blogs, and google for opinions concerning the Wardrobe and the changes that ensued.

Good luck.

I have reviewed those changes already and am struggling to understand how this “allows for greater flexibility” with costume pieces (town clothing). What am I missing?

Don’t get me wrong, I like that it’s easier to see all the skins that are out there now, easier to retain access to them, etc. But all of that could have changed without turning town clothing into a single set item rather than leaving them as individual elements.

Am I not understanding something obvious here?

I have a few cosmetic town outfits that I used to piece together to get specific looks. An example of one of these was the pirate outfit, minus the pirate hat (which I preferred not to wear as I felt it looked silly). Instead, I would use a pair of eyeglasses as my outfit head piece.

Now outfits seem to be one all-or-nothing item rather than made up of individual elements (i.e. shoes, pants, shirt, hat, etc). Am I correct in my understanding that I can no longer create the above look I described above? And that individual elements from outfits can no longer be combined together to create additional looks?

If so, why was this changed (as it seems like a huge step backwards)?

Solo Instancing?

Edge.4180

Thanks for expressing your concerns. It’s definitely our preference to give players as much choice about their instanced experiences as possible. Whenever possible, we make instances capable of being either soloed or completed in groups.

However, in this particular case, because we are manually intercepting everyone over level 25 and automatically loading them into the instance, we currently don’t have support for parties to be brought into the instance together under those circumstances. This is something that we are looking at addressing for the future. It was not an easy choice, but for narrative reasons we felt it would have been less impactful for players to load straight into Kessex Hills without having experienced the instance beforehand.

I do regret that we weren’t able to offer “The Nightmare Unveiled” as group content at this time, but hopefully the remainder of the open world content makes up for this.. :-)

The problem with this approach is that impact you were hoping to achieve ends up getting lost on some players. Friends zone together, but when they don’t end up in an instance together and can’t find any way of joining one another, they end up leaving the instance immediately and prematurely to try again (because in their minds they’ve encountered a bug rather than an intentional design). And so, the focus shifts completely away from the story and onto resolving an annoying problem of the game not functioning as expected.

Eh that solo “instance” ( i wouldn’t even call it an instance lol) takes 5 minutes on a level 80 and 15 minutes on lower level characters, EVEN if you read the story line. It’s not difficult every class can finish it no matter of the level. Dodge’s your friend!

After you finished the story line you will have enough people in Kessex Hill and you wish you could go back to soloing

Except it is an instancing exactly, so why wouldn’t you call it that?

Here’s the problem with exaggerated claims (like your 5 minute estimate): they work both ways. So, we can instead say this:

“Eh that solo “instance” takes 45 minutes on a level 80 and 60 minutes on lower level characters, EVEN if you read the story line. "

See how that works?

Whether it’s difficult or not is irrelevant. What is relevant is that people expect to be able to play MMOs with their friends. When the game doesn’t let them play together, it’s frustrating.

I’ll be pretty sad if Kessex Hills doesn’t return to its former glory. We have enough destroyed looking areas in the game. Kessex Hills was one of the (very few) places you could find fields of grassy rolling hills. Particularly the huge place north of the lake and south of the Queensdale zoneline.. that was one of my favorite locations to run through in the game and now it looks awful.

Take 10 steps of bandit-filled grass and then 10 steps of centaur-filled dirt, with a bit of centaur-filled grass mixed in. This describes everywhere in Kryta before this patch. It’s very tedious to complete these maps that look and feel exactly the same multiple times.

No. Maybe you can’t see the differences, but don’t assume everyone else hasn’t been paying attention to the virtual world around them.

The very green rolling hills that were showcased in Guild Wars 2’s trailer video at timestamp 2:13 ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=FjCehYrEbO0#t=133 ) now look like ruined crap. Did we really need more of that beyond Orr?

I don’t mind if content can be soloed. Likewise, I don’t mind if content can be done in a group. What I do mind is when I lose the option to do either one.

Your game was designed around the concept of dynamically scaling content based on the number of players present. Whether it’s a general open-world event or a personal storyline mission, the ability to support a full party or a party of one has always been there. And so, I’m confused as to why you would ever choose to break groups of friends apart when they’re trying to play this game together. First in Southsun, then Dragonbash, and now again in this update. I really can’t imagine a greater offense for an MMO.

I’m not suggesting the Last Stand at Southsun, or Dragonbash, or the solo instance in this event were difficult. They were not. What I am saying is that nothing kills an evening a gaming like logging into an MMO to play this event with a friend, and then suddenly the game won’t allow us to play together because someone out there decided we should really be enjoying this content alone.

To make this clear: Ability to enjoy content solo = good. Ability to enjoy content in a group = good. Losing the ability to do either = not good. You have the ability to dynamically scale difficulty based on the number of players present and thus support anything from solo play to full groups and all the iterations in between, so can you please make use of it going forward? Stop introducing events that can only be done solo, or only be done in a group.

When I first zoned into Kessex Hills and was automatically transferred to the solo instance, I walked forward to speak Sergeant Walters and my game crashed (which has been happening several times with this patch, and normally I don’t have this problem with Guild Wars 2).

When I logged back in, I was in the open-world Kessex Hills, rather than the solo instance of Kessex Hills. I can’t seem to find any way back into the solo instance to participate in the adventure with Sergent Walters. The game seems to think that I’ve completed it, when I barely even started it.

I tried it again with another character, but that one crashed while zoning in and now he is in the same position of not being able to access the solo adventure.

I really want to play through it so I can get a bit of background as to what’s going on. Is there no way to access the solo instance content again if you get thrown out of it prematurely?

So.. culling is NOT completely gone then?

in Clockwork Chaos

Posted by: Edge.4180

Edge.4180

That isn’t culling, its hard drive latency.

No, I don’t think so. The problem with karka being invisible was a culling issue. Even the developers confirmed that during the Southsun update.

Also, when I’m running across the world now, monsters are immediately coming into view. In fact, I see them further away than ever. It’s only in crowded situations like this where culling normally becomes a problem that they start to become invisible.

Furthermore, when half of the Aetherblades, clockworks, etc around me are already rendering properly as expected, at that point their assets are obviously loaded into memory. However, additional ones dropping in remain invisible for 10+ seconds. It’s not like it has to hit the hard disk again for each Aetherblade_soldier_3B being added to the current scene.

So.. culling is NOT completely gone then?

in Clockwork Chaos

Posted by: Edge.4180

Edge.4180

Sure, it was annoying not being able to see all the other players around me in crowded areas like cities. But invisible players weren’t really the big problem back when we had the original Southsun invasion update. It was the packs of invisible karka that were slaughtering all the invisible and visible players alike.

When you said you had turned off culling in PvE, I naturally assumed you were talking about the meat of the PvE culling complaints: the invisible NPCs/monsters. Else, why did the player-model changes take so long to make their way over from PvP to PvE?

During these clockwork invasions I find myself surrounded by visible (yay!) players, but invisible (boo!) hostile mobs. A crowd of Aetherblade nameplates floating in the air isn’t really doing it for me, and for this event I have my player model quality at minimum and the range at maximum.

Why is it still taking 10-20+ seconds for these NPCs to show up? Most of them are dying and becoming corpses before they even render.

Turn off those nameplates folks!

Nameplates for players not yet rendered always show up, regardless of the nameplates option setting. It’s completely horrible and I want it gone.

Couldn’t agree more. Nameplates in that screenshot makes it look like kitten .

Yep. I turned my nameplates off and now it looks fine.

I’m not sure what everyone else is talking about, but the only time nameplates show up now is when I hold down alt, and when the center of my screen passes over a “target” (which is expected, and useful for catching the name of individuals as you run past them).

What actually stands out like a sore thumb now that all the text is gone is the Commander icons. Please, please, please let us disable them from displaying on our UI.

So, graphically, I don’t think anything changed beyond the scaling particle effects mentioned in the patch notes.. just our pre-patch settings have been altered. You’ll need to go back into the options and make adjustments as desired.

Not only would we have scheming and underhanded Gnashblade (who, frankly, acts like a jerk until the very end) holding a political office, but Kiel sounds downright scorned – which is actually understandable, because the whole time she’s talking to the player about the election you can tell she’s making the assumption (after going through so much together) that the player has her back. I can understand why she’d feel betrayed.

Thankfully, things turned out differently. She got the support she expected and Gnashblade didn’t get put into office. That’s a better direction for me. I would rather the story focus turn to more important issues pressing Tyria, not ones created by player voting. I just prefer dragons over scheming politicians and scored Lionguard officers.

such a shame i actually thought we would had a good story or fractal for once.

So, none of the existing fractals appeal to you, but somehow you expected this one to turn out differently?

Is the problem with the fractals the story they tell, or the fact that they’re trying to cram an epic adventure into a ~10 minute dungeon run? Because, if it’s the latter, I don’t see how a ~10 minute adventure based on Abaddon was going to turn out any differently for you.

Oh, I realize that (and really, we have no idea how many ideas they picked these top two out of.. it could have been 5, and it could have been 50). The point is, I imagine the next few dozen times they’re looking for a fractal idea the Abaddon concept is probably going to get voiced again, and how often do we realistically expect it to get shot down simply because the NPC Evon Gnashblade lost an in-game political race.

I suspect at some point (a year+ from now) the phrase “Would love to do an Abaddon fractal but we can’t, because Evon lost that vote..” by one developer is going to be followed by the phrase “Who the heck cares?” from another. And they’ll just do it.

Maybe. If they keep putting out superior ideas instead, it’s hard to complain about that.

The issue I have is that they said they brainstormed for hours coming up with ideas for new fractals, then picked the two best ideas to put up for this vote. Now that they’ve said they definitely aren’t making the other one, that means we just lost one of the two best ideas they themselves said they could come up with.

Which.. was going to happen one way or the other, no matter which way the voting went. We were always going to lose one of the two best ideas they came up with. Just something people should keep in mind.

Hence my issue. I would have had an issue whichever of the best two ideas they had was killed.

^This. I’m not sure why they chose to do it this way, as opposed to simply having us vote for the fractal we want to see developed first. As stated before, Abaddon and Thaumanova were supposedly their best two ideas, so what does this mean for the future of fractals? It just feels odd that after Molten Facility, Aetherblade Retreat and Thaumanova Reactor are all implemented as fractal stages, their next best idea will be skipped.

I would honestly be surprised if they continually pass up one of their top two fractal ideas. I wouldn’t count on an Abaddon fractal showing up this year, but eventually.. sure.

In fact, I highly doubt they’ll ever spill their intended design for the Abaddon fractal, mainly because they’ll want to keep it in reserve for possible use later on.

I know they said differently, but things change.

Agreed. Another boring, goody two shoes Trahearne 2.0 storyline where we do things and she takes the credit. Do yourself a favor and just delete her mini. It’s a small victory, but a victory nonetheless.

So you rather game where the NPC does most of the awesome epic work, and you standing around and hand out the quests instead? There is a certain level of imagination here that is needed.

Nicely said.

As for the minis, I don’t know about Evon’s as I never attempted his achievements, but Kiel’s mini has had a few lines since the start; they weren’t added today.

Why did people wait until the last minute to vote anyway? I mean.. this is an MMO. And everyone playing MMOs knows they eventually have to deal with everything ranging from unexpected emergency downtime to at-home connection/computing issues. To wait until the very last second to cast your vote (when there was absolutely no advantage in waiting at all) is just risky and foolish.

Anyway, warning was provided from the start:

Don’t you think it was a bit unfair though? You guys essentially designed Gnashblade to lose. Shady, stairwell Charr who “supports RNG” vs the “cute, innocent, female war hero leader” (after all she takes credit for our work).

Seems that even people who didn’t know about the bonuses would vote for Kiel. Reduced WP costs or reduced RNG box costs? Yeah Ellen’s victory is a complete shock to me. =|

One could argue that the idea of saving real-life money on keys is more appealing than the idea of saving virtual coins on waypoint costs. And that a fractal based on a god was more appealing than a fractal based on a failed Inquest experiment. I feel Evon was set up to have the advantage, honestly.

You’re fighting for the wrong cause here, original poster. Fractals are supposed to be quick (~10 minute) adventures that aren’t even consider lore canon. Do you really want to try and shove your dream for an Abaddon story into that?

You’re better off asking for a Bonus Mission Pack that covers the events surrounding Abaddon’s fall, (like the excellent bonus mission pack we had in the original Guild Wars). That would be much more appropriate for the epic saga you’re likely envisioning. A 10 minute fractal would never be able to tell that story well.

If you made a thread about that and linked us to it, I would support you in that thread.

If the recent voting confirmed anything, it’s that GW2 has a lot of fans that want to see this current development team present their spin on events that are associated more with the original Guild Wars.

It would be difficult, for example, to do justice to the fall of Abaddon in a fractal (which, by their very nature are extremely short adventures in duration).

Has the team considered releasing a Bonus Mission Pack (much like we had in the original Guild Wars) to tell epic stories that go beyond the scope of the current game world? I can’t help but think this is something players would be interested in.

Sounds like some sore losers up in here. Congratulations Team Kiel

Rightfully so. Enjoy your 10c reduced waypoints for 4 weeks, chump.

Make another thread about it. Enjoy your 10c reduced waypoints for 4 weeks and a crappy fractal.

You wanted people to maybe be excited about keys they don’t plan on purchasing and a crappy fractal instead?

Crappy fractal? Not sure if trolling or serious….. No I’m sure you’re trolling.

You’re just making all kinds of errors today because I’m actually serious.

Please explain to everyone how this epic saga of gods battling gods was going to work.

P.S. Make sure to wrap it in the confines of a 10 minute fractal run.

Request- Abbadon fractal to be made anyway.

Bye Abaddon Fractal, forever

Seems like most people would rather see another Inquest Dungeon rather than a fight between gods… Well the Playerbase has decided. I can tell you how this Fractal will be:

Evil Asuran Mastermind goes crazy, wants to create something to rule the world/destroy it/start chaos, blows the reactor up, bossfight against defiant flying stones, Loot, gg.

Some Players just wanna watch Lore burn.

This is why you’re not cut out to be a game designer – because that is, apparently, the best idea for the reactor fractal you could come up with. Kind of sad, really.

Kiel won!

You need to start looking at it from the fractal standpoint. Want to vote for Kiel to see the Thumanova Reactor fractal? Why? I’ll save you the trouble: The Asura thought they were super smart, they tried to do something, and something blew up. Ok cool we got that out of the way?

Great, now please go vote for Evon so that we actually have a good permanent bonus from the victor. I don’t expect people who didn’t play GW1 to understand the important or sheer awesome that is the Fall of Abaddon. This is GODS FIGHTING EACH OTHER and not "We’re asura, we screwed up again asura shrugs as the curb your enthusiasm theme song starts playing

This is ridiculous. You’re expecting to participate in this epic battle where the gods fight one another and cast Abaddon down, which is somehow supposed to fit into a single 10 minute fractal adventure. You need to reign those expectations in.

The truth is you have no idea what either fractal will end up looking like. For all you know Abaddon’s fall could be an underwater fractal where you fight loads of Margonites, with nary a god in sight.

Meanwhile, the Thaumanova Reactor could be something quirky and fun, like the party playing the role of Skritt who steal components from and sabotage the reactor, ultimately causing the meltdown. We just don’t know. What we do know is that one of the designers working on the fractals seems to be excited about the Thaumanova Reactor concept:

To shed some light on my bias, our team brainstormed up a bunch of fractals for you guys to pick from and then we settled on the best two. I got pretty excited about Thaumanova, given what we intend for it to entail so I’m Kiel supporter all the way.

That, to me, is a reason to vote in favor of Kiel. Meanwhile, you’re throwing all your hopes (and votes) behind some dream scenario that simply does not fit within the confines of a fractal dungeon. Fractals are short adventures, not epic god sagas. You’re voting on the fantasy in your mind instead of the reality we’d end up with.

Btw: if Kiel supporters spend golds on her to win, then wtf are you doing, Kiel guys? You can save max 20 silvers on waypoints, but you would pay gold for her to win?

You’re assuming waypoint discounts are the driving force behind their votes.

When you realize you voted for your nemesis.

How in the world is that evil?
Ellen is returning hero= good path, she helps the merchants
Evon is keeping it= neutral, it doesn’t harm merchents further, it doesn’t help merchants eitehr
Evil= Harming

“Keeping it neutral”. LOL. I think the merchants might disagree. Neutral would be not getting involved. Neutral is not recovering someone’s stolen property and then using that still-stolen property to finance your needs.

Do you think Desert Rose price will rise?

Does Southshore Survival go away if Kiel wins?

No, it gets entered into the rotation regardless of which candidate wins. It’s here to stay.

Unfortunately, the last Evon Gnashblade supporter who posted similar pictures of his support ended up being caught in a photoshop scandal.

That said, it’d be silly to assume Ellen Kiel supporters aren’t preparing to throw massive support behind her as well.

If there’s a way to prove they’re real, I can. Until then don’t try to discredit may spent gold as photoshop wizardry.

I’m just pointing out similar events that happened roughly a week ago.

The original post/picture was removed, I assume, because it turned out to be a big fake.
