Is March patch really going to fix Culling?

I fear my system will just melt into nothing. Unless the fix specificly targets WvW.

Yeah, I’m concerned the problem is just being pushed off to the players. As in, the problem will be fixed as long as you max all the culling options and have a fairly new/beefy system that can handle the additional workload.. otherwise you’re out of luck. Hopefully not.

First, yes 0 guests and Overflows can still happen, but if guest beat natives to that zone, it will fill faster. So guesting can, and sometimes does, make things much worse.

The servers themselves need to be looked at. Sure, we could make the events happen more often, but even the 30 min ones are getting Overflowed now. Personally, I think I’m done with bothering. There’s enough elsewhere that offers better total rewards.

Not to you but just in general because I’ve read this enough already. This whole thing of visitors and natives, it’s ugly. These are Anets servers and you are bringing bigotry into the situation that isn’t needed. Mentioning the issue of over-populated zergs is fair so they can look at it, but then making a dividing line between players isn’t cool.

You’re kidding, right? The only “ugliness” is what you yourself may be bringing into it with that kind of thinking. This isn’t bigotry. There’s guests and then their are server residents, or natives, or whatever you want to call them. These words have simple meanings that don’t have anything derogatory to them unless you put it there.

We all had to choose a server when we started. We do this in every single MMO. These servers have communities. Heck, these servers in particular frequently duke it out in PvP to best one another on leaderboards. There is no shame in having pride in your server, and frustration over not being able to play on it because slots are being used by players who didn’t pick the server as their home.

They claimed to have fixed culling in an upcoming patch which was referenced in an interview on another website. Problem is, they specifically mentioned WvW and not PvE, so it’s difficult to tell if that’s just an oversight or their fix doesn’t apply to the PvE maps.

If you actually knew anything about culling…you’d know the answer. Culling happens game wide. It’s a graphical issue that affects everyone. But WvW might see it more than PvE because it affects player models. So if the fix is working, it will work both ways. There isn’t a WvW culling system.

(laughs)

I know more than a little bit about culling.

I’ll cut you some slack since perhaps you didn’t read the interview. But what you’re not understanding is that the issue goes beyond just player characters, and yet in the interview in question he was specifically referencing player characters repeatedly.

According to his statements, they’ll be providing several options for us to choose from, which decide how other player characters are presented to us (which sure makes it sound a lot more like a workaround than an actual fix), but goes into no details about culling issues with mobs, environmental structures, etc. Will they also be providing options for us that allow us to choose how to display mobs? What about structures, like the bank in Lion’s Arch (which is missing in the image below)? Maybe there will be generic options that cover every model, maybe not.

Like I said originally (which is the part you should have probably focused on before hopping into lecture mode), it’s difficult to tell from a simple interview whether the lack of comments regarding other problematic areas was simply an oversight. We’ll have to wait and see. Nothing unreasonable about that statement, you can relax.

What’s wrong with pushing people to try new things?

What you’re essentially asking is what’s wrong with pushing people to play the game in a way that may not interest them.

Why not just enable open-PvP in the PvE zones? What’s wrong with pushing people to try new things?

You realize the daily quest is optional, yes?

By his logic, so is playing the game.

And, yes, I know playing the game is optional, but my point is sometimes offering the advice “just don’t do it” as a solution in cases like this is generally not very helpful.

That’s the new Daily for you. Always pushing players to do things that don’t fit in with their desired play style.

Actually you get to choose from 9, so your statement is false.

No, the statement is fine, it’s just a misunderstanding on your end. What you seem to be missing is that we have to choose 5 tasks from a selection of 9 to complete the Daily, and it’s not always easy to find 5 tasks on that list that everyone wants to do.

Ambient killing, being directed to perform a specific activity in a specific zone you had no intention of visiting, PvP tasks.. plenty of things on that list that aren’t necessarily going to appeal to everyone.

Darn, I was hoping this thread was about something else.

I haven’t had problems with this. My character (who has access to the gates) simply talks to his order representative and is moved through the door so he can use the gate to return to Fort Trinity.

What seems like a bug to me is the fact that I can travel to any Order’s base from Fort Trinity, but can only travel back with the Order I chose earlier in my story. At this point in the story my character is a Commander of the Pact. To not be allowed to use another Order’s gate to travel back to the Pact base seems both odd and silly (and I’m pretty sure some gate guard’s head would be doing the proverbial roll).

Im sorry but in my opinion this ’’guesting’’ idea is garbage anyway..
Think about it a moment.
As far as i understand {and please correct me if im wrong} guesting is player A {me} going to a different server to play with player B { a friend } correct ?
Well if thats right, and i as player A want to play with my friends player B………. then WHY AM I NOT ON THE SAME BLOOMING SERVER AS MY FRIEND IN THE FIRST PLACE.
since as i understand it too. only north american servers can guest with north american servers.. and only euro servers can guest with other euro servers.. correct too ?
the whole idea ’’guesting’’ is fluff…. nothing more than that. and if you want to play with a friend… go get on a server together permanently.
And don’t make the excuse of ‘’oh it costs money to transfer servers’’ it was free for 6 months.
Anyway rant over apart from saying……….. ’’GET OFF MY LAWN YOU PESKY KIDS.! :P

Simple fact is, friends don’t always make it on the same server. I have friends who I appreciate being able to play with, but who also went to other servers because that’s where their work buddies/guild/interests went. I’m sure we all have circles of friends that don’t always include everyone elses’ circle of friends.

Or, sometimes you just make friends through other avenues well past launch. Understandably, neither is going to uproot and move, but that doesn’t mean they wouldn’t like to play together whenever the chance presents itself.

There’s nothing wrong with the guesting concept. It’s an awesome idea. But it’s being implemented in the simplest format, and the sad truth is players will take any mechanic and find a way to abuse it if they can.

These events have their own problems. In my opinion, the population caps on these maps need to be lowered because it’s pretty clear none of the servers seem capable of providing a quality experience when so many players are merging on a single event. I’d rather have a cool 10 – 20 man fight with an outdoor boss than the chaotic mess plaguing the game now.

I’m not suggesting a map only allow 20 players on it, but they need to add a larger window to these spawn timers to discourage camping and shut down nearby waypoints to these events whenever they begin, which will eliminate people quick-traveling in. That will cut down on the numbers participating in the battles a bit.

As far as guesting, I feel a few things need to happen here:

  • 1) There should be separate overflow queues, one for players native to the server and one for guests. And the native player’s queue to enter a map should always have priority over the guest’s queue. Only when there are no native players waiting to enter their home server’s map should the queue for guests advance.
  • 2) There should be a limit placed on how many guests can occupy a particular map at any given time, with the majority of the overall occupancy slots being reserved for native players. To allow a situation where most of the occupancy slots on a map can potentially be used by players who are not even native to that server is ridiculous.
  • 3) Players should not be allowed to guest to a particular server unless they’re currently grouped with a player who is actually a native of the server in question. The intention of the guest feature is to allow friends on different servers to play together. It was not meant to be a tool to help players farm more easily. If you’re not on the server as a guest of a friend, you don’t need to be there. This also ensures that any one native can not invite more than 4 other “guests” to his home server.

Sure, that could be inconvenient, but the person who shouldn’t be inconvenienced is me when all I want to do is something as basic and understandable as playing on my home server. As a resident I should never lose a spot to a guest.

Maybe that’s harsh, but people are abusing the guesting feature. The intention was to join up with friends on different servers, not hop to other servers to take advantage of event timers, etc.

Let’s do some simple math.
3 million players, 51 servers, boss that drops fat loot in zone that holds less than 500 people…..

Guesting is not the issue here.

It would be ridiculous to suggest that guesting isn’t, at the very least, making the problem worse than it would otherwise be.

I mean, if you want to be simple let’s be simple. People are complaining that they can’t participate in events on their home server without being pushed to overflow. Meanwhile, there are people at those events on said home server who are guests. Those are spots being taken up, which means more home residents getting pushed to overflow, which means more people on here complaining about it.

That’s pretty simple.

Ok go get some air and read this.

Guesting adds very few to the boss fight. The reason you are in overflow is because ALOT of people are there. If guesting was off you would still get in overflow because you waited till the boss was up to teleport in. People who wait get the loot. People who don’t often don’t. Yes Guesting takes a few spots away but if your not willing to wait for it your not worthy of the spot.

Some of you are acting like it’s difficult to see the problem in action. It’s not. When you’re at an event and some of your friends are stuck in overflow, and you put forth the question in chat “how many of you here are guesting to this server/event?” and more than half of the people present respond “me” … it’s pretty obvious where a lot of the potential slots for full-time residents are going.

This isn’t rocket science. Instead of speculating here on the forum, start investigating out there in the game.

No it’s not difficult to see the problem, though for some it clearly is. It is NOT guesting. Get over that. The issue is the loot you get from these events that makes people go from boss event to boss event for a few rares. Disabling guesting would not make the problem go away. It won’t even make it that much less. Your massive overexaggeration of half the people saying me does not make it true that there are that many people guesting.

People will spread around again once the loot from other sources is on par with these chests. Until then have fun in overflow caused by your own server’s population. Guesting is just a scapegoat being used by those that don’t see the bigger picture.

Frankly, it’s not important that you understand what’s happening. Fortunately for all of us, the developers (I would hope) have the tools to track who is going where and can see where the problem plainly is.

Some of you are acting like loot from bosses is new. There has always been loot at these events. You could always get rare drops from the chests. More often than not I walked away from these events with at least one yellow item. It wasn’t guaranteed prior to the last patch, but it was pretty darn common. And despite that, sometimes I’d be at these events concerned there weren’t enough people present to complete them.

But now they’re packed (at any hour, it seems), with some players always stuck out in overflow, and a good number of the players present are from other servers. There’s a total of 24 servers out there for U.S. players.. even if just 2 players out of an entire server, from each server, descended upon a map of another single server, that’s fifty more people suddenly occupying the event. It doesn’t take much for guesting to make this situation bad quickly.

I can not take WvW seriously until the culling is fixed.

I’m also not a fan of armor repair in PvP. I get that WvW is legitimate way to level a character and there has to be the tradeoff, but the fact is most normal people will die way more in a typical session of PvP than they would in a typical session of PvE. So, armor repair in PvP is just more costly simply because of its frequency.

Saying “don’t die” or “learn to play” is not useful advice. I can’t go 10+ levels without dying in WvW like I can in PvE. Not without sitting in the back and running at the first sign of trouble, anyway.

I’ve been messing with some settings and just discovered something very interesting. When I unchecked “Depth Blur” in the post processing options, this problem seemed greatly alleviated, if not gone.

For some reason this option seems to be bugged in some areas and cause everything to become blurry not just distant objects. Here is a thread on it in the bugs forum

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/bugs/Depth-blur-seems-to-be-affecting-everything-even-close-up

Anyone who has blurred characters up close (esp big ones it seems) I would encourage to uncheck this option and see if it helps. All this time I’ve had this on and just assumed it was poor rendering.

I’ve only had this problem in Timberline Falls. There’s something going on with that zone where (when playing in a large part of it) the entire scene becomes ridiculously blurry.

Max settings help, but even on highest, armors still look better on small characters than large.

Big or small, zoomed in or zoomed out.. the end result is this: the more your character is filling your screen (whether it’s their personal scale or just how close your camera is to them) the more you’re going to notice flaws/limitations in the texture resolution used for the characters. That’s just the way it is without blowing through the available video memory and/or bogging down performance.

There is an option for high resolution characters that (unless something changed) only shows up if you have enough video memory available on your hardware to support it. Do you have that enabled?

That said, there is texture stretching on some of the armor when it’s applied to races that don’t necessarily have “normal” proportions or appendages, regardless of how big or small the character is. And, in some cases, some of the UV mapping could just use some love. I’m sure the artists would have also loved to have all the time in the world to tweak it, but schedules can get demanding.

Someone above mentioned tiling, but that’s not usually used for armor art.

Condition builds can actually be scary-powerful when you’re playing solo or in a small group with members that aren’t putting out similar types of condition damage. There’s a reason Rangers were annoyed over the nerfs to their shortbow. Events or anywhere that you get a lot of players attacking the same mob is when condition damage starts to really suffer.

What people dont realize is that “overflow” is not really a seperate server, but rather one of the other servers that are not currently full. Overflow is just a title that you got moved, not an actual “extra” server as many would like to believe.

This information is actually totally wrong. Overflow are separate from the worlds.

Thanks for clarifying Martin. Is what I was thinking of possible then? Or is it a programming nightmare?

As overflow servers are a shared resource (they are not world specific) my guess is that it would not be possible.

That’s what I figured. People seem to be under the impression that there is a specific overflow server for their home server, and that’s just not the case. When you’re on an overflow server you’re populating it with players from any number of different servers. So, it’s just not possible to sync event times to a particular server without them being wrong for every other server.

Yes you do, you can either have the prince of balthasar, which is a small dude on two legs with pointy gear and a sword or a flame shaman if you want a mini charr… I don’t want this specific mask, but something that I can use in the same way as I would use a mask… there is a big difference between a mask and a helm just like there is between Rytlock and a pet Imp for example.

There are any number of head-slot items that will obscure your face like that mask. I don’t see the problem.

And if that above statement was frustrating for you to read, that’s pretty much how your statement about minipets is coming across to someone who obviously cares a bit more about the minipet portion of this game than you. A pet imp or a flame shaman is no Rytlock. Don’t start suggesting all Charr look the same, heh.

I think the point is there are going to be unique rewards that are offered that you’re just not going to be able to get any other way. The Hall of Monuments rewards are an example for original Guild Wars players just as the miniature Rytlock minipet is for owner’s of the collector edition.

You may not appreciate it, but those Hall of Monument rewards are kind of a big deal. There was a lot of advertising and effort put behind them when they were first announced back in the original Guild Wars game years ago.. it took years for that system to get fleshed out, and earning them required no small amount of time/effort. I think people would rightfully freak if they suddenly just became available in other ways.

That said, I am in no way opposed to more skins being added to the game for everyone. Just not those particular skins.

That’s my point. The Rytlock pet is epic, but you can get another SUBSTITUTE pet if you don’t have access to the Halls of Monuments, you can have a different pet, but it’s still a PET… The mask is an example of an item that does not have an equivalent for players without access to the Halls of Monuments. You have particular skins in the Halls, I am not saying to put the same ones for everyone, but have something similar to it so you can improvise.

I think you’re really stretching with your point here. I can just easily say you can always get another item for your head-slot. It does not have to be a head-slot item that looks like a mask, just as you’re telling me I can get another minipet.. even though I have no alternative for a minipet that looks like a tiny version of Rytlock wielding Sohothin.

It already happened when transfers were without costs.

I can fully understand that it is annoying that servers get crowded but all this cry out to restrict guesting for me sounds more like “beware the strangers”.

You’re just choosing to see it that way. All that’s being requested is to be reasonable and fair to the full time residents of these servers. They have an expectation to play with their community on their chosen home. There’s nothing odd there.

For the record, you could not switch your residence over to my server right now if you actually wanted to. It’s full. You can guest to it, though. So, your doomsday prediction isn’t applying here.

Guesting is a great tool, but it was not meant as a way to bypass event timers and earn more loot. Unfortunately, players will always abuse any inch given to them, which is why we rarely end up with nice things.

The word native is a bit misleading, because everyone choose a server in the beginning or changed to one. I stayed on a low populated server because it felt wrong to change to a higher populated one for my own advantage. All players complaining about the “strangers” should be aware that for me this issue can be easily solved simply by moving to a more populated one. Then I’m a “native” and noone could shove me out so easily.

And this will happen if you start to exclude others. Not everyone guesting to another server is just farming one event after another. Noone of you can claim that you own your server.

I don’t think that’s an accurate prediction. Most of the time many of these more populated servers are listed as full on the roster. Even prior to guesting being introduced, players who wanted to make these servers their permanent home were having a very difficult time finding a break in the restrictions to switch over.

On top of that, many players are simply rooted by other friends, guilds, etc to their current home server. They made it their home for a reason, and are not likely to pack up and move just because restrictions are placed on guesting. After all, we’ve gone all this time without guesting and yet life went on.

Maybe you’d switch servers (and, honestly, why don’t you?), but I highly doubt curbing guesting would result in a mass exodus from one server to the next.

Ambient killer daily

That’s the new Daily for you. Always pushing players to do things that don’t fit in with their desired play style.

That’s the typical forum poster for you. Always whining about something that doesn’t exist.

Nobody is making you do ANYTHING in this game.

Well, that’s some silly logic if I’ve ever heard any. Because we can apply it to any questionable mechanic in this game and simply say “nobody forces you to turn the computer on..!”.

Yes, nobody forces me to run rabbits through with my sword, but if I want a reward that is a result of the Daily and the other options on the Daily are even less appealing, then guess what I have to do to complete the Daily?

I don’t normally run around smacking ambient critters while I travel. I don’t normally drag a fight out much longer than it needs to be just to work in some extra dodges. I don’t normally perform a much more risky dodge THROUGH mobs instead of away from them to get finicky credit for evading an attack. I don’t normally sit there and let mobs beat on me so I can score an extra revive before all the other players doing the same thing clear away the opportunities. I don’t normal travel specifically to zone-X to complete task-Y when I had no intention of playing there prior to seeing the requirement for finishing the Daily. The list goes on.

Fact is, the original Daily used to have some fairly generic tasks that fit in well with whatever activity we all enjoyed doing. We could just log on and proceed with our plans and we were likely to complete the four tasks: kill quantity, kill variety, gathering, and event quantity. But now, the Daily has changed from its original intention of rewarding players for just playing the game to a busy-work end-game device, and completing the Daily requires players to often jump through some very specific hoops that often move them away from their normal activities.

In other words, the Daily has gone from something you just happen to complete by playing normally, to something you specifically spend time and effort working on to complete.

By the way, to touch on your comment.. you seem to be “whining” about other forum posters. Isn’t that pretty typical too? Nobody’s making you read these forums.

Where'd the appointed guesting discussion go?

Not trying to earn an infraction here, but all the threads on guesting were locked and we were told by a moderator to merge the guesting discussions with another (much younger) thread on guesting. The moderator provided a link to said thread (which, again, was an odd choice since it was so much smaller and newer).

Now, hours later, the provided link is no longer working because said thread seems to be missing from the forums.

Am I just missing it or something?

P.S. Hard to believe I can’t type “Where did” in the title because of space restrictions. Please consider easing up on the 45 character text limit for subject titles.

Claw of Jormag Unplayable

I feel like the population caps on these maps need to be lowered because it’s pretty clear none of the servers seem capable of providing a quality experience when so many players are merging on a single event.

People you do realize if your being put into an overflow server on your home server it is not because of guesting. As Anet has stated in the Patch notes that home server people have right away over guests. And Guests are therefor more likely to be in the overflow servers.

Your statement is not accurate. I believe you’re allowing yourself to be confused by the line in the patch notes which states:

“Guesting on worlds that are full or highly populated increases your risk of being put into an overflow map.”

All that statement is trying to make clear is simply this: if you choose to guest on a highly populated world, you’re more likely to end up playing on overflow maps (rather than the server you’re trying to guest on) simply because the maps on the target server are frequently going to be full. And that unfortunately reality applies to anyone, whether you are a guest or a native of the server. That’s just common sense being spelled out into patch note form.

It is not suggesting that guests are being given a lower priority than anyone else on the server, which is what you seem to be incorrectly reading into the comment. There is no “right of way” (as you put it) or preference/favoritism for players native to the server, and that’s a problem.

I also remember suggesting that Overflow maps events follow the exact same timer as the normal map, so players who got kicked to overflow would not miss out on events and party members will be able to right click > Join in overflow.

Another great idea!

Unfortunately, I don’t believe this is feasible. There doesn’t seem to be specific overflow servers linked to specific server (Dragonbrand, for example, does not have overflow servers set aside only for Dragonbrand players). Instead, players from all the servers in the region (e.g North America) are all lumped together in as many overflow servers as are needed.

Since all the servers have unique spawn timers for these events, there’s no way with the current setup to sync events from a particular server to a particular overflow server.

My personal opinion, by the way, is that the populations on these maps need to be lowered even further because it’s pretty clear none of the servers seem capable of providing a quality experience when so many players are merging on a single event.

I feel a few things need to happen here:

How can LA handle so many Commanders?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Edge.4180

They bought it – they have the right to turn it on or off when they wanted to.. They are not violating any of the game’s rules..

Why the rant?

Simply put, each player should be able to control what information is and isn’t displayed on their screen. And while players with the commander icon are free to display them whenever they want, I should have the option of choosing to not have their icon occupying space on my UI. You should not be able to force other players to view your clutter, especially across the map.

Eventually this will change, likely when nearly everyone has a commander icon and the minimap is rendered useless by icon clutter. It’s silly that we have to wait for that day when the functionality to opt out of seeing these icons should have been available to players from the beginning.

I dont understand why it would bother you tho…

Really? It’s not occurring to you how this might be frustrating for someone trying to use the radar/map to spot a specific icon, especially a new player?

Because I remember when I wasted 20 minutes trying to locate the trade broker (whose icon was buried under commander icons) the first time I went to Lion’s Arch.

I wonder this new monthly achievement.

But this is the problem with this particular task in the monthly. Had it just required making fine (blue) items or better, players would probably be thinking “hey, this is a good time to work on my blahblah crafting a little”.

Instead, because the requirement is masterwork, we’re all trying to game the system by making pointless, cheap items.

We ran into this problem last night (in fact, I was just coming to the forum to ask about it). During the early part of the “Help the Pact reach the Altar of Betrayal before their morale is depleted” event everything seemed to be going smoothly and then suddenly, in probably less than two seconds, a half-dozen players and all the NPCs went from fully alive to dead (and the event immediately failed). I’m not even sure what happened.

It’s a little ridiculous to have things go south that quickly for the amount of effort put into the chain up to that point.

I don’t think tasks that force you to go to a specific zone belong in the rotation (I’m looking at Ascalon and Shiverpeaks above).

I also think that Daily Kills, Kill Variety, Gatherer, and Events should be included in the rotation every day, so the Daily continues to appeal to players who preferred the original Daily that launched with the game.

I also have a boatload of commendations (~2000) and a donation packaging sitting in my bank, and am pretty disappointed to see this was removed with no warning or notice. If I had known it was getting removed entirely, I at least would have cashed in what commendations I had. Is this ever coming back or should I just destroy the commendations?

To be fair, they posted notice in the patch notes in the announcement section of the forum about a month ago.

That said, I do think they should make an effort to make upcoming changes like this one more noticeable in the future, particularly because they seem very willing to use the forum announcement feature whenever it suits them.

Guesting gone too far?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

There needs to be a limit on how many guests can occupy a zone, and it needs to be very small in comparison to the number of native players can occupy said zone. While I realize this may cause some problems when you want to play with friends from a different server, you have the option of guesting to their server, them guesting on yours, or both of you guesting to a server neither of you call home and hooking up there.

Sure, that could be inconvenient, but the person who shouldn’t be inconvenienced is me when all I want to do is something as basic and understandable as playing on my home server. As a resident I should never lose a spot to a guest.

Same thing happens with Environment details like rocks on cave floors (skrittsburg), bushes, debri, etc. I’ve noticed it since launch. Haven’t seen it so bad on Mobs though. Its ruins any chance at beauty this game has when you see it :*(

The environmental details I have seen since launch, but I suspect that is more a problem with just an extremely short visible distance that is purposely chosen, and a lack of LODs to view these objects out further. I see it a lot with stumps that only render when you’re within a few meters of them.
