Add some progression to it maybe. I dunno, better matchmaking rating or reward better skins.

Hide PvP Rank in Solo Queue

Wait do ranks now show BEFORE the match starts? That wasnt happening before…

It needs to be hidden completely, the entire match. The only time rank might be okay to show is at match finish.

Agreed. It needs to show Leaderboard rank as well check here.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/pvp/Constructive-LB-rank-fix-Pros-Cons

I’m weary of showing any rank indicator, because people like to fixate on numbers and let it affect their judgement, in turn they’ll play weaker/stronger based on a silly number attributed to their team and opponents.

That said, I would much rather see leaderboard rank than glory rank under one condition: ONLY SHOW IT ON THE SCOREBOARD ONCE A MATCH FINISHES.

The problem with vanity numbers on the scoreboard before and during a match is people may give up and leave the match, regardless of dishonor, and once you are pitted 4v5 it’s all over.

Hide PvP Rank in Solo Queue

in PvP

Posted by: Gilgamesh.2561

Gilgamesh.2561

It would erase a lot of confusion and discrimination. It serves no purpose.

Think it through:

1. I enter a solo-queue match.
2. I see my teammates, by chance, have Ranks 1-20. I think: “Man, these guys are noobs.” WRONG. They may not be noobs, since matchmaking is not based on rank.
3. I see my opponents, by chance, have Ranks 20-40. I think: “Man, our opponents are good! We’re totally going to lose.” WRONG. For all I know, the opponents may be horrible at tPvP and grinded to that rank through hot-join.
4. I leave the game early, eating dishonor, because I believed I would lose anyway.
OR 4. I don’t even try, because I feel like we have no chance at winning.
OR 4. I do try but I give up easily because I feel like our opponents are too good based on their rank.

I would never do this, but I know a lot of players who would because they think rank is everything.

Now let’s try the same scenario with rank hidden:

1. I enter solo-queue match.
2. I see my teammates.
3. We play hard.
4. We win because our team had really good players.
5. I talk with a few of them and we group up, and it turns out a couple of them were only Rank 10.

I would hide rank from tPvP team and solo. Rank is for hot-join and custom arenas. (really just hot-join)

Hot join needs to be destroyed. There’s too many modes and too much fragmentation.

Players who just want a quick game, and don’t care about losing/wining/progression, should join a custom arena.

We should only have 3 modes:

- Team tPvP
- Solo tPvP
- Custom Arenas

(I would vote on mists dueling as a 4th, but that’s me)

Hmm. You bring an example of permanent arena teams from WoW. But didnt WoW just removed permanent teams in most recent patch? It now works like in GW2, you can queue with anyone without need of forming teams. I guess Blizzard had their reasons to make this change?

That’s interesting! I haven’t followed WoW in ages but if they did actually do that I’m surprised.

I like the idea of GW2’s “soft teams” (as I would call it, as opposed to “hard teams”), but I still think a “soft team” should be able to be formed more easily and also have an actual name associated with it.

How about a team template system? You form a regular team, then you can save that team as a template and give it a team name and maybe an icon (I would say the leader of the group is the one who gets the dialog to pick a team name and icon). You can of course have multiple team templates with different rosters. Then, if you are ungrouped, there could be an interface to “Queue as a Team Template” and you select your team template and it will attempt to group all those players and queue you up.

Allowing dueling in the mists.

Seriously. If you want to get people into the mists and, in turn, into sPvP, you need dueling.

Dueling in the mists does a few things:

1. It makes the mists look more populated. Makes the sPvP scene look alive. Can foster and build PvP communities on a realm. Get people to know one another, and maybe become friends or group up.
2. People will be in the mists. People will probably queue for sPvP more because of that.
3. PvErs love dueling. In World of Warcraft I knew plenty of people who didn’t like PvP, but they loved to duel.
4. GIVES PVPERS SOMETHING TO DO WHILE WAITING FOR QUEUES!!!!

I would implement dueling in unique, spectator-fun way. People love spectating duels, but in a lot of games it’s hard to spectate duels because they are spread out over a lot of land.

1. Make a colosseum in the mists, complete with elevated bleachers to see over the entire arena. The arena should be large enough that 10+ duels could be carried simultaneously. Put a waypoint there so people can zone into the mists and get to the colosseum instantly.
2. Only allow dueling in the middle of the colosseum. The arena is not a free-for-all. It’s a target-someone-and-initiate-duel-between-two-people. (Think World of Warcraft and flag dropping from the sky)
3. Spectators can sit on the bleachers and watch duelist and maybe learn a thing or two!

I’m never going to stop suggesting non-instanced dueling. This game really needs it, and it’s been requested since BWE #1.

5 dishonor is too much

in PvP

Posted by: Gilgamesh.2561

Gilgamesh.2561

Dishonor doesn’t seem to do anything really – I lost 2 out of 3 matches today because people left either before it even started or early on. If this keeps up, I will develop a habit of disconnecting myself very soon…

The flaw with dishonor is that there is a large enough sample size (players) you may always encounter players who are not aware of the dishonor system, and therefore have no knowledge of the punishment of leaving a game. Especially considering people leave and join hot-join at will with no punishment, so they are used to it.

All it takes is one player to leave a game and you’re immediately at an enormous disadvantage. GW2 is tuned enough that 5 v 4 is a sure loss.

Don’t let matches begin until each side has 5 players zoned in and ready. There is no other solution. (A lesser solution, but still not good enough, is to make it very obvious that not joining a solo queue will give you dishonor — plaster a big red warning on the screen)

Dishonor needs to also apply to players who do not contribute to a match. You can’t automate this. You need a majority vote system where players can decide on those in their team who are not contributing and give them dishonor. If 4 players see that one of their teammates is just running in circles in the starting area, not doing anything, then they should be able to vote dishonorable on that player and punish them. Because solo queue is a bunch of random players, this will not be prone to a group of friends griefing a player.

I Guess Solo Queue is True to it's Name

Allie — Why even let a match begin before each side has 5 players zoned in?

Dishonor is great and all, but it doesn’t account for valid situations where a player may not join their match — such as disconnections or AFK. Dishonor does not make the experience of those in the match any better.

Don’t open the gates until each team has 5 players zoned in and ready. It’s worth waiting extra time for a fair game.

Gilgamesh.2561

So much needless whining.

The solution is simple. Give spectators cast bars (with spell title) so they can see what the players are casting. This is actually really important for spectating, because it’s hard to see animations. I suppose for instant casts it wouldn’t be that useful, unless you had an area on the HUD that listed the last 3 spells, instant or casted. Basically give spectators information.

You have to think outside the box for MMO spectating. You can’t try to emulate what MOBAs or RTS are doing, it’s completely different.

World ranks

in WvW

Posted by: Gilgamesh.2561

Gilgamesh.2561

Why are world ranks not account bound? I’m almost more surprised that sPvP is account bound but WvW isn’t, because in WvW your profession’s role is more homogenized due to the massive scale of objectives and siege weaponry, whereas in sPvP your profession is very important.

In other words, you can be almost equally effective in WvW as an experienced level 80 Necromancer or a newbie level 80 Mesmer, as long as you are a veteran WvW player. Whereas in sPvP, just because you are a veteran sPvP player does not mean you are going to be good on a newbie level 80 Mesmer if you’ve never touched the profession before.

Anyway, rambling aside, just make WvW account bound. You’ll encourage people to mix it up and not get burned out.

I disagree, but I’m not in the eSports camp. Dueling is probably the most important thing to this game to get people interested in sPvP (especially PvErs). Most people do not care about all this eSport shenanigans. You need only have played WoW to understand how dueling fosters a community and gets people involved in PvP.

Edit:
By getting more people interested in PvP by dueling, more people may be interested in the eSports aspect.

Easily the longest requested feature next to solo queues is dueling. People have been asking for dueling since BWE #1.

Get ready for solo arena syncers…and people unwilling to play when vs their friends or with a team composition they dislike.

Queue syncing is incredibly easy to curb. All you have to do alternate player/team.

Player 1 queues -> Team 1
Player 2 queues -> Team 2
Player 3 queues -> Team 1

Etc.

If your group of 5 friends queue at the same time, there is a strong chance your group will be split and you’ll be playing against your friends.

Another solution is to just take the first 10 players then randomize what teams they’re put on.

PvP 3 wishes -what do you want most in PvP?

in PvP

Gilgamesh.2561

1. Heart of the Mists dueling.

  • HotM dueling will attract PvE players into sPvP. In World of Warcraft, hardcore and casual PvErs enjoyed dueling. We need more sPvP interest, and dueling is the gateway drug.
  • HotM dueling gives sPvPers something to do between games. Right now people just idle around bored. Few people socialize. It’s like being at a party for mimes. Dueling will reinvigorate sPvP communities.
  • Some people say, “Oh, all dueling does is foster insults”. GW2 has a lot more mature and clean player-base than some MMOs. The toxicity was there at release, but most of that toxic has left the game (those players were banned or quit). Secondly, players are more likely to be toxic in hot-joins or tPvP because they are facing mostly anonymous opponents. It’s no secret that anonymity on the Internet allows toxic behavior. However, players are less anonymous in HotM. The players you see are the players of your server, and you are way less likely to be rude to the players of your server, lest you want to be an outcast nobody respects.

2. Separating tPvP into two ladders.

  • tPvP Premade: You can only queue as a premade. Your teammates and opponents are premades.
  • tPvP Solo: You can only queue solo. Your teammates and opponents are PuGs.
  • The official tPvP ladder needs to be split into two groups: premade and solo.
  • Solo ladder answers the question: Who are the best players in a PuG?
  • Premade ladder answers the question: Who are the best players in a team?
  • Because each ladder answers a different question, tPvP players of PuGs and premades would be interested in both ladders. Moreso premade players would be interested in attaining “best PuG player” status.
  • Split queues and ladders would significantly increase interest in sPvP. I’m not joking. It would be the single largest population of sPvP interest since release. PvE players are very goal-driven and can be even if they solo in PvE, but the goals in sPvP are very lacking unless you have a premade.
  • More interest in sPvP would further interest in Custom Arena tournaments and eSport viewership. I think if you were to ask any GW2 eSport player right now, as well as the casters, they would recommend a split queue as to be crucial for sPvP interest.

3. Some form of team registration would be nice, with roster viewing and control.

  • Allow teams to have names and perhaps emblems.
  • The current ad hoc teams does not make sense for the ladder. If you had team registration then the team ladder would be less about “Who are the best players in a team?” and more about “Who are the best teams?”
  • Formal teams would be better for spectators in spectator mode and viewership on Twitch, for eSport tournaments. A team’s name could appear on the HUD and the winning team’s name could be printed upon match completion, instead of players guessing what team was blue or red.
  • Team registration could be incorporated into the Web API to allow us to pull information on teams, which in-conjunction with a Custom Arena tournaments API could allow for an GW2 eSports platform to materialize.

The term overlay is traditionally reserved for DirectDraw overlays (surfaces). For example, the FPS counter in Fraps, or XFire, or many VOIP applications.

Hey, thanks a lot for this constructive answer, instead of the previous which did not answer.
It’s quite sad if it’s not planned
I would say, though it’s not absolutely necessary, it would be a major improvement :

- Prettier customizable bars that you can move ? yes please !
- Ability to move and modify the size of buffs/debuffs on you and your target ? yes please !
- Ability to save gear and equip/unequip with 1 click (like Outfitter on WoW) ? yes please !
- Ability to have a better organization of my inventory (Ark Inventory like) ? yes please !
And so many examples to be added ! yes please !
See how much addons could improve the player’s experience of the game.
The point is just not to be as stupid as they were in WoW : not giving any information of the combat log.
Addons like Recount or BigWigs/DBM should not exist and have no place in GW2.
Addons only for comfort/visual are much welcomed.

Those improvements I said, they might come into the game some day but are very, very, very low priority. When you see that high priority (like I Berserker from mesmers) aren’t fixed after 3 months, that makes you understand you can’t hope to see those changes before years.

I’m assuming you got the GW2 Boss Event Overlay from this post? https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/community/api/List-of-apps-websites-using-the-API/2083358

The top of the linked Reddit thread clearly states:

It MAY be recognized as a Virus(here an virustotal check, but this is a general AutoIt Problem.

AutoIt is a scripting language that also happens to be popular for creating trojans, because the language is very easy to grasp, and the scripts can be compiled to a single executable. Unfortunately due to the frequency of AutoIt being used as trojans by malicious individuals, AutoIt executables are flagged as a trojan by most anti-virus programs. That does not make AutoIt itself bad, but bad people use it for bad reasons. (I personally prefer AutoHotKey, I thought AutoIt bit the dust long ago)

The source code for that AutoIt script is available:
https://github.com/Downi/GW2-Overlay/

I scanned the source code and didn’t see anything malicious. Of course it’s still possible that the compiled executable could be dangerous even if an author provides the source. The safest route would be to compile the source yourself, if you are suspicious. However, most authors who go through the effort to publish their source code to GitHub are probably not malicious individuals.

Concerning authenticated API and potential features: GW2 does not have any kind of in-game inspection. You can’t see other characters’ traits or gear details. Is it safe to say if you can’t do something currently in-game, such as inspect other players, that it won’t become exposed in an API until it is in-game?

Yes, you won’t have any additional access beyond what your character can already do.

You can’t inspect someone outside of spectator mode, but clearly there is an API to allow you to view another character’s traits and gear. Would the API then expose this for consumption outside of spectator mode or would this itself require the character to currently be in a sPvP match where spectator mode is accessible?

I am thinking the latter myself, as part of the Custom Arenas API when retrieving detailed information about a Custom Arena and its participants. This would be a good point to make in the sPvP API suggestions thread.

GW2 isn’t interesting to watch.

Twitch can be misleading though, especially with old console games. You might think “WTF, Super Mario 64 has THAT many viewers?” but there’s a whole speed running community around old console games, and usually it’s 1 or 2 streams that are attracting all the viewers.

But back to the main point: GW2 isn’t interesting to watch.

What I don’t understand is why ArenaNet doesn’t wise up about how great Twitch is as an advertising platform to attract people to their game, go contact the Twitch guys, sign up for their API, and implement easy streaming built into GW2 like Call of Duty recently did. If anyone could just click a button while in game and instantly stream to Twitch, there would be a lot more streams.

Yet still. Guild Wars 2 isn’t interesting to watch.

Personalities have a lot to do with it too. Kripparrian was attracting a lot of viewers in the early weeks of GW2, but he stopped playing after his ban.

It confuses me as to why ArenaNet tries to enforce this status quo, by making changes that make the Engineer less appealing. Once upon a time you could say “Well, Engineers are such a complex profession that when played to its potential, you excel other professions.” I used to think that was true, in the early days of GW2, but then I realized some professions simply have more going for them.

The thief is the easiest example:

1. Make a glasscannon Rifle engineer (Berserker’s), and attack golems in the sPvP lobby. Watch them die slowly.
2. Make a glasscannon dagger Thief (Berserker’s), and attack golems in the sPvP lobby. Watch them melt in sub 4 seconds.

Dueling is fine. People who are against it probably are just bitter from WoW days of being defeated in duels.

Reduce AoE damage, remove caps.

Or do as WoW did/does and remove caps but split damage between number of mobs affected. Or does GW2 do this already?

Either way, caps suck, but I’m not against reducing AoE damage.
