Well I hope I’m not too late to the show! Here’s a little info about our guild.

Name: Big and Beautiful Norns [BBN]
Server: Sanctum of Rall
Active: Primarily evenings during the week (NA timezones) and any time on weekends
Contact info: Goose.8195

18+ age guild, based in North America. ~60 members, active in TS3. We are looking for new members who want to be actively involved with us and not just part of a number. Friendly atmosphere where everyone wants to get to know everyone. 100% rep isn’t required, though some repping is definitely encouraged.

Races other than Norn are more than welcome

PvE/PvP guild, not as involved in WvW. Most of us are really looking forward to doing all of the new content together so if you’re as excited about HoT as we are send me a PM!

All experience of players are welcome, and of course if you don’t have HoT you are still more than welcome.

Your experience with crafting legendaries

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Goose.8195

Goose.8195

I crafted both of my legendaries. I slowly accumulated materials through hoarding. I gambled way too much gold away trying to get Dusk. Continued hoarding materials but each time I got the urge to flush gold down the mystic toilet I spent it on T6 mats instead. Then I saved up gold and ended up buying Dusk last.

My suggestion is before buying a single t6 mat, make your mystic clovers. You get a lot of T6s in this process.

I did map completion slowly, it burns me out kind of fast. I played for over 1,000 hours before making my first legendary, but I also wasn’t trying very hard at any given time.

Then for my 2nd legendary I got the precursor in the forge, so I started hoarding mats again and a couple of months after my first I had the 2nd one completed. A few guildies also helped speed up the process by giving me some mats which was nice of them.

I agree with the OP. I am also completely against jump puzzles in dungeons and fractals. They make me literally sick and triggers massive headaches. I remember they said it would be optional content, it doesn’t feel like that anymore.

Well luckily there aren’t any JPs in dungeons or fractals. So you’re good.

Dungeons…not that I can think of… but fractals? There are multiple fractals that include sort of mini jumping puzzles.

I like JPs though, and they often lead through and to some of the prettiest landscape. I can’t join the club

[Suggestion] Dye our commander tags!

Goose.8195

Please no, the last thing I want to see is commander tags becoming a fashion statement. They are supposed to be helpful for identifying events, zergs, guild missions etc. Not being used by every single person on a map because it matches their equipment.

If 2 people are tagged up red and one is at a champ the person usually says “champ on my tag” and you quick pan your mouse over the tags you see and port to the one of the person who said it. It’s not that hard.

"Skill Grind" Can Be Worse Than "Gear Grind"

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Goose.8195

Goose.8195

So far, how I’ve taken the “masteries” information, is basically a leveling system, without actually leveling. A system that makes you capable of accessing and completing these new areas without making you overpowered for the old zones. The delivery will be the most essential part. Does it feel like you have to spend too much time in areas “leveling” masteries to get to the next area? There will have to be a good balance, similar to the balance of starting a new character and leveling through PvE before you can go to each new zone without being 1-shotted.

I like the idea of it because as said at PAX it won’t kill other areas or content, while still adding progression. I’m not at all worried about the “grind” if that is even what it will be. Delivery is key, and we won’t know until launch if it’s a great system, or a bust. If overall content (quests, missions, etc) drives the “grind” then I think many people will be very satisfied.

I haven’t pvp’d anywhere close to a lot of people on this forum but I’ve found that if you send 1 to cap home and it doesn’t get pushed by the enemy team then that person can quick kill the beast before heading to mid. Capping home and mid though at the start seems to greatly outweigh slaying any beasts. I like the 1 to home/beast 4 to mid option when solo or duo queuing because it’s simple to organize and your chances of taking mid are that much better.

Honestly, the classes are all very different once you hit level 80 and get max gear/traits/etc. You may find a class very boring to level, but once it hits 80 you might change your mind.

I originally mained an engineer but as soon as I got my guardian to level 80 I liked him so much more. Ele at 80 is also a lot of fun.

Unfortunately i don’t think that guardian can contest with thief or ele when it comes to dps.

Bear in mind, to get the DPS you are looking for with those classes you will have to have well-timed dodges, and know exactly when to hit certain skills. Max DPS on a softer class is difficult to achieve when first playing because you tend to be squishy, so if you do start one on of those classes don’t get frustrated if things aren’t going your way right away.

Arena in LA

Right click -> block player

Come back to me when I can Right click -> erase memory. Meanwhile, NO.

GW2 is a comfort zone. If I want competition, I open the door and step back into real life business.

Vayne summed it up nicely in the other 100500th “dueling” thread:

I tend not to enjoy hanging out with the people who like dueling.

This game provides features I like and because of that, I like many of the people who play the game. The community in WoW sucked really hard. It’s not all that hard to guess that part of the reason is that the way WOW is set up encourages more toxic behavior.

That’s why I don’t want it. The more you encourage competitive, testosterone filled in your face behavior, the more people I have no interest in hanging out with will still crowding around. I’ve seen it in more than one MMO. I don’t want to see it here.

Obviously I won’t like everyone, but the more features like that on offer, the more people I like will walk away from the game and the more people I’m not interested in will start playing the game.

It would be interesting to see, for example, by age breakdown, a list of players who like/want dueling.

But having played games with dueling and having not liked the results of what I’ve seen, that’s why I’m against it.

Might it be different in Guild Wars 2. Sure it might. But I don’t distribute brass knuckles down at the bar and hope for the best either.

I scanned through the original post again and didn’t see a single time when the OP mentioned anything about dueling, yet you suspect it a “carefully disguised post about dueling.”

This post is about adding a different style of arena to LA. One that was already invented in one of the books. My guess is this arena would be hypothetically instanced in LA anyways, but having an architecturally aesthetic coliseum attracting people in and out of LA would be welcome to me. It could even be part of the huge “LA rebuild” that NPCs have been slaving away at for months now.

This game has had forms of PvP since launch. The Guild Wars franchise has always had competition.

I’m sorry people in game have offended you so greatly that you feel the need to erase your memory (or in the hypothetical situation that you’ve created would have to have an erase memory function in order to go about your day happily). I haven’t lost a night of sleep because of a GW troll in PvE or PvP.

Agree to disagree, I guess.

Guardian is my #1 favorite class. I have over half my hours on guardian. I do fracs, dungeons, pvp, and I like to equip the ol’ loot stick and take him to EotM for some easy karma/loot for hours at a time.

Warrior is probably the easiest of the 3 that you listed to just go out and play. They have great damage and survivability.

I’ve been playing my ele a lot more lately too and they are just plain fun. I like to switch it up between staff and scepter/focus depending on my mood that day. D/D ele is also pretty awesome to play in pvp once you get the skills and rotations down.

Arena in LA

But this is not even that. It’s limited purely to one place, purely team based, and it’s registered matches. It’s basically a blend of spvp and the Queen’s Gauntlet. Queue up with the NPC in charge to smash face. Except unlike the gauntlet, it’s team based. And unlike spvp, it has a public audience (and potentially a gambling feature).

Let’s trash an idea for something that may be fun for people for these hypothetical situations you create.

“Can I haz duel?” Yeah, pretty sure OP never said that either for those throwing words in his mouth.

Personally I think an arena like what was in the books in LA would be pretty neat, especially if you could hop in as a casual observer. Heck, even being able to throw a wager in gold on one of the teams would be cool to me. It would give me more of a reason to at least go to LA for something other than mystic toilet and various merchants.

Yikes, can’t imagine deleting a fully unlocked level 80. I’d rather spend all of the gold to make a character like that and buy a new character slot versus actually deleting a decked out character. Like you said, never know what the future may hold and maybe you’ll like that character again someday.

Also, with racial changing you have to consider the titles as well. This would basically allow someone to collect all cultural armor on 1 toon, all story lines, etc. I don’t think that really goes with the spirit of what Anet is trying to maintain here.

I agree with Orpheal, a lot would have to be reset. Almost like your character never existed in the first place, when changing races.

1. You don’t need ascended for anything. Weapons are a nice upgrade because of the higher base damage, but stat wise the difference is negligible.

2. Because of #1 it doesn’t matter if the loot that drops will get you ascended gear in 2 months or 2 years. No content in the game is locked away from you because you don’t have ascended gear yet.

3. When the expansion launches, according to Anet you still don’t need ascended gear to complete the content there.

Really? So higher level, more rewarding fractals can be completed without ascended items? Good luck there.

Fotm is the only part of the game that is it needed for, and only for higher levels, a couple ascended trinkets can get you up to 3’s just fine.

thats 1 part of everything that it is needed for.

PvE, WvW, PvP, events, dungeons etc… dont need it. And the ONLY reason is b.c of AR.

You can do a 19 Fotm with 5ar on a Crafted Back piece with 0 problems so level 1-19 you need 0 AR.

If you really good and can dodge the Agony attacks then you dont need ascended gear at all up till level 29.

Yes, I know all of this. But someone saying “no content” needs ascended items is very different than saying some (FotM happens to be some of my favorite content in the game) requires it.

Also, not needing ascended gear until level 29? That’s 30% of your health per tick (on a 20-29 frac), and there are fractals with unavoidable agony. Just pointing out facts.

This is all beside the point though. I just don’t think people should downplay the necessity of ascended gear while saying you can play through all of the game without it. It’s simply not true.

There are still other tips and whatnot for computer building a new builder may not realize. Making sure you aren’t statically charged when you touch the mobo and whatnot, and I might be overly safe in not using magnetic tipped screwdrivers while building. I’m sure you can youtube it but I’d always recommend doing your first build with a friend who has some experience. when is precursor Hunt coming?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Goose.8195

Goose.8195

If the precursor acquired from said scavenger hunt was account bound (and subsequently the legendary) I think it would help alleviate market change (from instituting a scavenger hunt) a little bit. For me, the precursor is the very last thing I acquire while making a legendary. I currently have 2 legendaries, and I am starting to gather the materials for a 3rd. I imagine this is how a lot of people also go on with making their legendary. Yes, if a precursor actually drops for me while I’m collecting materials for a legendary I may switch my focus to that one (or flip it for the precursor that I want), but again, this doesn’t really affect the T6 market.

Under this system, people who want the precursor for themselves to build a legendary will work on the scavenger hunt, but the market still would not be flooded with pres/legs or picked dry of T6 mats.

Now I could definitely be wrong, but I can’t imagine that a difficult scavenger hunt would drive people who just sell T6 mats and don’t care about legendaries to start hoarding the mats, consequently driving prices up. But again, I could be wrong. To me, it seems that if someone wants to build a legendary, acquiring the precursor isn’t going to stop them, and if someone isn’t going to build one then having the ability to complete a difficult scavenger hunt for their choice of account bound precursor won’t change their mind either.

Fractals and the Weapon Skins Problem

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Goose.8195

Goose.8195

I don’t really mind that fractal skins are very rare “RNG” drops, but what I do mind is that even the skin you get is completely random.

I would change this to keep the same low drop rate, but award you with a “Fractal Weapon Ticket” if you get lucky enough to have one drop. The ticket would allow you to pick a skin of your choice.

If they implemented that same system with rings (“Infused ring ticket” or “ring ticket,” depending on RNG), that would be appreciated by me as well. I haven’t even done the countless fractals some of you have (~200 for me), and my bank is already harboring multiple copies of rings I’ll probably never use. Of course this addition alone would be a huge increase (in quality) to fractal drops since it basically guarantees that you get something you want every few runs. However, if they maintain the current “account bound” status I don’t really see a huge problem with this.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

If the level cap went up rendering ascended gear obsolete I would probably quit. This isn’t gear that we acquired by RNG from dungeon bosses or something like that. It’s gear we’ve spent our hard earned gold, laurels, and time crafting/infusing/etc.

IF they designed it to give legendaries a bump, and they made it so that to get another bump in gear between ascended and legendary you had to upgrade your current ascended, then OK, I could deal with that. Or if the level cap went up and the next armor tier was legendary armor, I could deal with that as well.

On the topic, I don’t care if it’s a traditional expansion or not, I just want new, high-quality content. And a lot of it.

It’s literally 15 minutes of your time to help fix one of your storage issues…

I don’t like everything in-game either but when something so easy gives me such benefits I’m willing to sacrifice a little bit of my day to get it done.

But it won’t “fix” it.

3-6 stacks of 50 a day; let’s be nice and say 300 empyreal fragments a day…considering the current inventory I have of the stuff plus my accrual rates; I may as well be paying off 30k in credit card debt by making minimum payments.

Don’t give me a thimble and have me start bailing water on a sinking ship; and certainly don’t call that thimble a “fix”

That’s why I said “help fix.” Obviously it won’t alleviate the problem entirely, and really isn’t a great solution, but in the time you’ve spent on here today you could have had it done.

Unlike a sinking ship you can simply drag your thousands of “unneeded” fragments off the inventory screen in about 2 minutes and press the “delete” button. Problem “solved.”

Quality > quantity.

I’d rather have one rare and useful item every once and then, say, 2-3 per day or week, and feel extremely satisfied with it, than getting spammed with clickable junk that spams more clickable junk that overloads my intentory with valueless runes, valueless skins and valueless materials. You can’t even sell them when they are sellable, because of how common they are.

When you have items like Mawdrey II, that consume massive amounts of “precious” materials for even more junk, and players are satisfied to transform overly common non-tradeable junk for tradeable junk, then you know the reward system in this game is not doing something right.

As for SoG…I don’t do jumping puzzles, if I wanted to play an arcade game, I’d play an arcade game.

Wintersday gift rewards I think pretty much everyone has agreed have been underwhelming and too much clicking.

Ascended mats take up a lot of space, that I agree on as well.

As far as the reward system goes, I think the more challenging content should actually have rewards increased, not the rest of the rewards decreased.

Land Spear (1hander or 2hander IYO)

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Goose.8195

Goose.8195

Thank you for assuming that I don’t know what a spear is, and the short history lesson.

Would you not just step in close on a norn wielding a highly realistic 7 foot hammer as well? (I don’t believe gigantic hammers relative to character size have much combat functionality in a realistic sense period) Fields, 2 handed knockback, lunges, maybe slamming the spear into the ground as a thief and doing some physical move off of it.

I spin with a greatsword on a guardian and it flings out immobilization that can pull enemies back in towards me. Does that also relate to a time in history?

The greatsword has an edge and the hammer has a large, weighted and balanced head. The spear is a thrusting weapon. Again, angular momentum. But for this discussion, the issue is related to game mechanics. Both of those weapons already fill the 2H weapon niche and the magic stick with field generating properties is filled by the staff. So what is that a spear is going to be doing that won’t put everything else about every class back on the balancing drawing board?

Realism or historical accuracy isn’t the issue. It’s, what is this for? Creatively it’s lots of fun to talk about, but it doesn’t add much of anything. The magic stick spear would give warriors some of the guardian’s niche. The throwing spear overlaps the throwing axe. Why do we need this spear!?

If we’re going to just brainstorm, forget spears, I want a chain weapon for my thief and I want unarmed combat. If we’re going down the rabbit hole, let’s go deep.

The 2h spear could kind of fill a melee style staff hybrid.

As for why? So we can use the underwater spear skins because so many of them are beautiful, and to add variety.

I’m cool with other weapon brainstorms as well, but the skins are there for spears, so making them functional on land would be an awesome way to make use of existing resources.

Go hit someone with a 6 foot long magical pole and ask them how it feels, since RP seems to be the main basis of argument here. Maybe a 4 or 5 skill could be a spin move that creates a fire field, 2 skill could be a rapid attack in succession like the underwater attack, 3 could be a midrange lunge or gap closer. All you have to do is use your imagination. Why would you be screwed at close range? Try using a giant hammer at close range on someone, you’d never get an attack off before being struck or countered in some way, yet in game it works just fine.

You don’t always have to hold a spear at the very end.

Edit: as far as 1h goes I would envision them as being more of a javelin/midrange attack weapon.

I’ll just leave this here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spear

The reason you’d be screwed at close range is angular momentum. You can’t build up enough with a long weapon at close range. In the case of a spear or staff, the weapon has no edge in any event. If the person I was swinging a 6 foot stick at had any sense, they’d step close to me and wouldn’t be hit by the stick with enough force to do anything but inconvenience them. There’s a reason all polearm and spear carrying troops after the bronze age also carried a short sword. Spear at distance and vs horsemen, drop the spear when foot soldiers close in, and draw your sword. When soldiers carried the spear as the only weapon, they were shorter, thrusting weapons that were wielded along with a shield (which is why I think it totally makes sense to have 1H spear).

Nothing in this game has to mirror reality, but the game does a pretty good job of being logically consistent with itself.

If they were to add a 2H spear, I’d say some of what you say makes sense, field creation and that sort of thing. But if it gets additional range, then it needs to be balanced with close range penalties. If doesn’t get range, then the question becomes why add it as a new weapon at all? What niche does it fill that isn’t already being filled by another weapon?

Thank you for assuming that I don’t know what a spear is, and the short history lesson.

Would you not just step in close on a norn wielding a highly realistic 7 foot hammer as well? (I don’t believe gigantic hammers relative to character size have much combat functionality in a realistic sense period) Fields, 2 handed knockback, lunges, maybe slamming the spear into the ground as a thief and doing some physical move off of it.

I spin with a greatsword on a guardian and it flings out immobilization that can pull enemies back in towards me. Does that also relate to a time in history?

Game Updates: Traits

The best feature that could happen since the new traits came out last year would be a revert to the old system while keeping on-the-fly resets and adding in build templates. Even if the previous reset “fee” was built into the UI.

I would value this more than all other content released in that time period, and would immediately begin leveling my alts sitting at level 20 from using an experience scroll.

Just my opinion.

Land Spear (1hander or 2hander IYO)

2h spear really doesn’t have a place in GW2 land combat (or water, really). It’s a non-projectile ranged weapon that is utterly useless inside of 5 or 6 feet. It really isn’t useful against non-mounted opponents either.

As a projectile weapon the 1H doesn’t make a lot of sense either, since it’s one use.

But a 1H thrusting weapon with greater than normal melee range and some blocking could be interesting.

In a world where we have aquabreathers functioning as gills, magical staves shooting firebolts, greatswords with ranged attacks, arrows conjured from thin air, etc. etc., there is no place for a spear? Ok.

A 1H spear, sure. 2H no. And none of your examples deals with range mechanics, which is ultimately the issue here. You’ll note that there actually is a comparable weapon, the Staff (spear with no point), and it’s used as a ranged, magical weapon. Perhaps you can come up with some close range skills for a 6 to 8 foot long weapon with a point but no blade? Or maybe you’re suggesting that a 2H spear be used entirely at range and you’d be screwed at close range?

What race you will play for new Class

I prefer some races to others but I also want to eventually unlock all the cultural armor sooo, yeah that kind of locks me in.

You don’t need to wear the cultural armor to unlock it, just right click and pick “add to wardrobe” or something like that.
I only have a human necro but I unlocked the light, medium and heavy T1 human sets.

While this is true, if you actually want the achievement you do have to put it on. I unlocked all of the skins on a character but it only gave me credit for the ones that I could actually wear towards “the emperor” achievement.

I have that achievement and all i needed to do was buy them, they are soulbound on acquire.

How long ago did you complete it? I tried this pretty recently and it did not give me credit for the culturals that my character could not physically wear. I will try again tonight and see what happens.

That can’t be the case. I have credit for some of the Charr achievements, and my (only) Charr can’t even wear the T1 cultural yet, because he’s too low level.

It happened with me. I blew a bunch of money while I was on my guardian. Bought all of the T1 and T2 human cultural armor before I noticed (thankfully not T3). Got credit for the “1,000 skins” achievement but only got credit for the cultural specific achievement that my Guardian could personally equip. Tried again with a different race (only a couple skins that time), and same thing happened. Maybe it counts if your character will have the ability to eventually equip the armor, but not if its a different armor class altogether. That being said I guess you could just make new characters, buy the skins and delete the character to get them all relatively quickly and easily. But that just seems like a waste to me.

I kind of like the idea of it being 1h if you equip an offhand, giving you mid ranged attacks (distance comparable to pistol) and 2h if you don’t equip an offhand, giving different skills for both.

Your most-progressed deleted character?

I’ve deleted several level 80 toons because I found I did not enjoy playing them. I’ve also deleted a couple 80s post-April patch because I could not see the advantage of spending 42g and 320 skill points on the CORE character asset: Traits.

It’s easy to level in this game. Too bad ANet ruined all enjoyment of it with the trait system.

What was the trait system before? This one is all I’ve ever known.

You opened traits at level 11 (1st tier) and bought 3 books. One for minor, one for major, and one for grandmaster. Total cost was about 3g. You could just use any traits in that tier. The ONLY drawback was that you had to pay 3 SILVER to change your traits.

Wow, sounds WAY better than the system used now. It’s kind of like, if you play one character a lot and get most of the traits unlocked/bought, it feels like you’re gimping yourself when you switch to one with less.

This is exactly why the Traits thread has 3,600 posts and 170k views. It’s been a topic of discussion since its implementation.

I deleted a level 32 necro once because I logged in one day and realized I spelled his name wrong. He had a bunch of gold on him I forgot to put back in my bank before I did that too. Oops!

Hmmmm, honestly, it would depend on the armor class.

If heavy armor I already have a Norn, Human and Charr heavy, so I would go with Asura or Sylvari.

If medium, I have a Human, Asura, Charr, Sylvari, and Norn medium class, so it would depend on what exactly the class was for semi-RP purposes.

Light I have Human, Asura, Sylvari and Norn so it’d most likely be a Charr.

Dodge rolling in place

This is pretty much why everyone tries stacking in corners and on walls right? So we can roll in place (against the wall) and maintain DPS. Dodge rolling in place is pretty much already being accomplished wherever possible (and of course already looks ridiculous). With the exception of champions and bosses that are out in the open.

That said, I really wouldn’t care if this changed to OP’s idea or not, since we are in essence already doing it whenever possible.
