Hi, I’ve come back after a long absence to see the new season 2 and am having issues unlocking it.

The season two was in my story journal but both episodes where showing us unlock by gems only. I thought maybe you had to have the previous episode for it to count and while buying the first let me activate season two in my journal the second episode remains buy only.

Followed some of the advice in other posts and cleared mail .. nothing in TP anyway soo. do I have to complete some of these initial story missions first?

Why can't we have 24 competitive servers?

we would never ever get 24 competitive servers becasue, quite simply there is not enough players to do that..there could be around 10 I think though.

I think choosing a server for both WvW and PvE has been the problem from the begining as it makes it much harder to balance the population actually engaging in WvW

stand aside, I work in childcare and decipher this sort of jumbled up mess pretty often

…. very disappointing. I see a huge difference between old and new players, the difference is much bigger then was in first 1-2 monthes after release. I see people with high mobility, huge burst and unkillable tanks. I see the influence that time has had on the availability of skills and gear.

I’m a casual player can`t compete with these players. I dont know why, but there high surviavability classes do insane damage in 4-6 seconds and yet regularly remove all my conditions. And they do it all the while moving around me. I play a WoW mage and I’ve never seen classes this op before.

So after 2-3 days of WWW (and being killed by huge numbers of necromancers) I don’t want return anymore. I’m angry, disappointed enough that I want to throw the game in the bin.
ArenaNet – you made from one of the best games – full kitten and WOW-like gameplay. Screw you idiots

Putrid Mark Blast Finisher

Yeh it needs to be activated to count as a blast. It does give the recognition such as icon and visuals for bring a blast when you lay it down but no combo effect. Would be cool if it was both though

I shouldn’t have used caps. I used them to demonstrate the rabidness I feel at learning there is a new Game of Thrones episode out. I just HAVE TO WATCH IT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! I enjoy that show that much.
In reguards to leaving content but not the rewards, I’m not saying it’s a good thing, But it is middle ground. If the content was fun and engauging you’d still do it even with the only reward being that you exerpainced it. Yes you’re not likley to ever do it again but it is content that you did and took you X time to do. And Y amount of players did it as well. Even if it is only played through once, if it was enjoyable, players that tried it would recomend it to their freinds and you now have content in your game that can be enjoyed by new and old players alike. It might not be a lot on it’s own but as you build apon that with more small updates theat stay in game eventually you have an expansions worth of content for a new player coming into the game. Conent that an older player might want to do with them.
I’m not sold on the episodic nature of realses, but I can see them working. However temporary episodic reasles I just can’t see working.

That’s the funny bit. I think most people enjoy and would regularly pay for episodic releases. Tsw has a great system for one, and then there are many other media types which thrive based on this type of release schedule.

I just don’t think a large population are sold on Arenanet’s model. There are other ways of financing updates that don’t include subscription, or cash shop lockboxes. Quite a few sell the content itself, and the model of outright selling cosmetics seems to be the model that appease the broadest section of the playerbase. The way they are doing it makes more money it seems but whether it’s good for the long term is still debatable.

Then there is the quality and consistency of these updates. Temporary is fine but not as a predominate update style, it only provides an artificial sense of world growth. Trying to simulate a world through constant short time events, no matter how well implemented just feels contrived. As someone else said earlier temporary content just doesn’t seem to have the same level of quality either as it invokes that throwaway mentality.

Episodic content can work, and temporary events are great, I’ve seen both if these work brilliantly for the genre I just don’t think Anet has found the right balance yet since there priorities and ideas have taken them in another direction. Sometimes I just think they do certain things to be different than WoW, whether that or not that’s a good or bad thing

We shall see how well it has really worked when a couple new releases give it some competition

I love your posts Kaaboose because they are always spot on with what the problems are in the mmo’s (save for the farming one) this time you’ve come close to describing correctly what’s happening here but there’s something wrong with the analogy. Perhaps it’s the use of TV shows or IPs.

I’ve played about 15 mmo’s in my time and one thing always presented itself as a problem. Subscription mmo’s used dirty tactics to keep people subscribed for longer than they should have been to complete content. They knew that people who worked for a living wouldn’t have time to spend all day on the game to complete things like reputation maxing and progressing thru every dungeon. So they extended it as long as they possibly could. This has been a theme for many years now and has happened in just about every sub mmo out there. The reason? More money.

The temporary content and how it’s being presented in GW2 is the same dirty trick but on the opposite scale. Since there isn’t a sub involved they’ve resorted to gambling tactics with boxes bought from the store, cosmetic items only available from the store, and content that will vanish almost entirely upon completion. Further in order to prevent people from experiencing the content with any kind of solo interest they’ve forced people to group in order to see the dungeons from each and every event by placing them into the Fractals system.

In my view, this is just 1 step closer to their November announcement that people who wish to see new content will be required to have agony resistance including any of the content dungeons we’re seeing in the temporary LS uploads.

These tactics are neither clever or welcomed and will most likely alienate whoever is left lingering waiting for the game to be a positive example in the mmo market. It’s really quite tragic that they can’t think of a better way other than trickery to keep people playing longer.

Also let me be clear I’m not talking about the holiday events including the Dragon event because those to me are holidays, however seeing holidays as anything other than a secondary concern for the game is not something those of us wishing to see a more permanent open world experience monthly would like. Holidays should be the separate small team working on non-world impacting side diversions, the real content should have a larger team and every bit of the dungeons that come out for the events should be translated into the personal story herald (a new herald) so that it will scale with the number of players invited to the dungeon but can be completed solo, and the items should be in game only there should be no more of this cosmetic event items only available via the store for everything. That would alleviate alot of the problems we’re seeing with this development.

I would like to insert ‘EastEnders’, ‘Days of Our Lives’, ‘All My Children’ or any other soap opera. They were pretty successful back in the day with that model. =)

This is the only reply so far that brought up any positive light on temporary content actually working! I can see the slogans now: Guild Wars 2! The soap opera of MMOS!

But seriously, Claiming temporary content is good because it makes people play it just highlights the point I made about creating a sense of urgancy to make the content seem more compelling. If a developer can’t make a mode that can hold a players interest then maybe it’s not that good to begin with.
I could be wrong since I’ve stoped playing WoW but I’d wager players still do Warsong Gultch and Alterac Valley, Mode that were put in 8 years ago.

This is the same point I’ve been thinking for a while now. Most of what is being implemented feels like the same sort of time filler pieces in subscription game, collect 100vs of that, kill thousands of those. Just because you can create more of it is no reason to be applauded. There is no altruistic motive behind it either, it’s the same methods to keep people playing but instead of peddling a subscription it’s lockboxes.

Now they have done some amazing pieces of content, Halloween was amazing, the new dungeons and jumping puzzles great, and the Southsun cove changes were perfect but there is just too much meaningless filler as an addendum to it.

Carrion or Rabid?

I wouldn’t mix and match. I would commit to one or the other.

Personally I only see an advantage in taking Carrion if you plan to avoid Undead runes. Undead runes a very compelling reason to run full rabid.

I also disagree with the premise that the barbed precision bleeds do not make up for the difference in damage between white carrion and white rabid hits. In my experience, they more than make up for it. Against structures though, you are very correct in that rabid is horrid.

I tend to dislike vitality over toughness though. As a necro, in 95% of the fights, I rarely am concerned with conditions on me. Since toughness counters burst and vitality counters conditions and burst to a lesser degree, I go with toughness.

Zerker thieves can hit me for 7-8k on a backstab, with 1800 toughness. With base toughness in Carrion its going to hit a lot harder, and my heals are not going to make up for that with my very poor sustain. I prefer stronger heals with a smaller HP pool when I am playing necro. (Ele/guardian/ranger can make use of the extra HP because they can overheal it… we cannot).

I used to be all about rabid myself, but that changed. Most necros don’t go undead runes after the terror buff. Rune of nightmare is it. The fear(even though long CD) is great, and the 10% condi duration helps ensure two ticks of terror.

Carrion also increases your lf bar a lot.
When it comes to the meta, condi DMG is what people are going, even as a necro you can’t cleanse all of it. When it comes to tpvp carrion is superior

actually I believe it’s + 20%, the tooltip has been wrong since beta (unless they fixed it).. the 2 piece bonus is right but the 4th makes it add up to 20.

Carrion no question for me. was running rabid for a couple months after release and while it does a lot of things right, and synergises well with many traits it is just a little lacking. With carrion it is an extra bit of damage on top that speeds up killing, and it makes necro more flexible in regards to weapon and utility changes.

Also in wvw with the predominance of condition removal from shouts, combos, and the many people running melandru and lemongrass it makes solely relying on conditions less viable

I lose many battles but have also won a few too, really good memsers though and I’m already dead but there are a few things I’ve noticed so as to stand a chance.

  • Epidemic is great against them, stack a few on them.. don’t worry too much about how many and when it used it should kill most active clones wihtin a couple seconds. Short cooldwown on this is great too.
  • life transfer is great aoe for killling clones too.
  • know when to dodge. There are specific animations to look out for that are very dangerous. watch clones when they run at you
  • condition transfers for the right time. Dropping putrid mark on my spot as them blurred frenzy puts the immobilize on them.

for a power necro axe can be a good tool. Hitting lots of clones gives good retal. the hit should nearly kill thhem and the retal finishes them off. also as dagger you would need to use a lot of control skills.

  • Dark path (ds 2) is a nice gap closer.
  • focus chill
  • sigil of hydromancy
  • warhorn cripple

I find the best build against them is stacking Fear. nightmare runes, reapers protection, terror, ds cooldown. with 2 second fears doing some decent damage against them as well as interupting their casts and movements you stand a decent chance of nailing them.
unfortunately for WvW this means running Twilight arbor until your head explodes from sheer frustration

i roam around solo sometimes as well waiting for a few of the guild to get one, usually thieves and eles will be a fun fight.. if they are really good you go down though. Mesmers on the otherhand are rather hard to win against.

Have an 80 mesmer as well and at times it feels like it is way too easy to win a fight. lots of short cooldowns and evasion plus good damage. Although I find coordinated groups with the necro more fun then mesmer, mesmer is too gimmicky in a group.

what I tend to think is that each profession should have a couple of skills to use that are zerg affecting, either offensively or defensively. Kind of like the viel (ina way that the are not restricted by the aoe cap. These in the right place could be extremely useful at times but with hefty cooldowns

Cooldown On Battleground Switching

I’ve seen this idea come up a few times and think it needs a lot more consideration then it is getting.

At the moment it is remarkable easy for one large size zerg to control at least 2 battlegrounds if they have been upgraded. By the time a server has slightly damaged a fortified objective a server can mobilise large numbers to the objective to defend… this is not necessarily a bad thing but having the ability to immediately return to the previous battleground afterwards and switch back and forth as they wish does create certain imbalances.

There should be a certain amount of strategy (lolwut) in gw2 with how you organise and place your forces. Having the ability to be in many places at once dilutes this and creates a less dynamic.. more zergy battleground. What this also does is also inflate the issue with the small size of these battlegrounds, they are remarkable easy to move around and being placed back at a spawn point isn’t as meaningful as it could be.

I’m from Jq and have bee on the receiving end as well as seen it done to others. I’ve witnessed Waha of Foo control multiple borderlands at once and always thought it was an unintended side of WvW. A group that large should be a dominating factor on a borderland.. A borderland but not of an entire timezone

Having this cooldown would also encourage being more defensive of your own objectives then just hopping on the kharma/wex pee train going from keep to keep and battleground to battleground.

State of the game - WvW Highlights

On that note I wonder if we can organize a monthly wvw state of the game twitch session with Devon and crew.

there was a youtube discussion specifically about WvW by a group called the Opposition that was decent, at the moment it seems like a lot of camelot unchained info news. Problem was it has less then 100 views so I’m guessing it won’t be that regular.

I would love to see a WvW specific state of the game talk but think lets keep it apart from these guys, their focus in on spvp not wvw. new people that are big in the WvW field and forums… new format too as it would also be fun to talk about the regular forum drama and guild happenings as well as changes and balance

They either don’t or they don’t care. Nerfing quickness in spvp was result of crying of skilless people in spvp but they also nerfed it in pve which had nothing to do with it. Logic behind that? no clue..

because while they can and have split skills between PvP and Pve.. the PvE also counts for Wvw and a lot of people who play that side enjoy whinging a bit (myself included soemtimes).. lot of people that don’t understand classes and buffs getting smashed by a few key quickness builds.

I know as a necro i’d probably try and counter with a fear mark or blind well, then a putrid mark to remove bleeds

protection and retaliation would be good too.. also don’t be so squishy and if you are hang back and don’t ball up so stupidly

i have a couple points i wanted to ask

The outmanned buff isn’t really helping anyone as it is right now (besides lower repairs), are there any plans to improve its functionality.

Defending keeps is a lot harder then it is to attack at times due to vision and aiming being impaired. Also with pulls and such it is nigh impossible to get close enough to do damage safely without falling to your death. I thought of ideas like maybe stabilty and protection on walls maybe.. Your thoughts?

Are there any other plans for earning wex pee. There are many other ways of helping the war efforts besides balling up, killing people and taking keeps. It seems at times most of the reward systems in wvw need a little tinkering.

on that note do you have any thoughts on making people spread out more.. the aoe cap seems like it often promotes this tactic.. how about scaling lords based on the amount of people attacking too..or having multiple control points within keeps in order to capture them.

Oh, and Can we look amazingly awesome too pls.. the constant upskirt shots on my invaders gear is a little unsettling

i tend to try and get in close and use the pet as an epidemic post.. if the pet and player are both getting hit by marks and grasping dead then they get quite a few conditions after the epidemic. Before stacking wait for knockback (if they have longbow) then after epidemic go straight into ds, once out go putrid mark. By then they should be hurting.

I really really want this as well. I have tried to level a new alt recently, I can barely stomach PvE but going into wvw is rather painful as a lower lvl character.

Don’t know if it would even need gold involved as I would just be happy with experience

Lag getting worse

Too little server-side data capability, whether it be server capacity, game engine capability, or in/out bandwidth, is what causes lag. Culling was instituted to reduce lag by restricting the number of character’s data that the game had to track and transmit for client side rendering. Given enough players active in the same localized area you can theoretically have lots of lag even if you have lots of rendering culling because some player actions need to be transmitted even if some of those players are visually culled. It all depends upon the relative magnitudes of the packets involved.

I strongly suspect that ANet is stealth experimenting to determine just how little server-side capacity they have to add to follow through on their pledge to eliminate culling, and they probably are stealth experimenting with different rendering algorithms as well. There have, after all, been a couple of small undocumented patches lately.

That would make a lot of sense considering that just a few weeks ago, they made huge changes to the borderland population limits without telling anyone. Hundreds of comments about new numbers and unbalanced populations being let in as well as a myriad of other issues and not a peep till recently. It seems they hold there wvw population a little in contempt, how else can you explain the lack of communication regarding these rather serious cobcerns

Was a lot of fun defending our little tower in SoR bg last night (8 or so ours ago) while some large sized groups tried to wrest it from us. Some close calls too because of the paper walls and gates but we had it well and truly sieged, I think there was 3 trebs alone at the end

Adding flames to the post i just wanted to say boohoo to all the people deserting sos, only took a couple defeats.

Now being honest I just wanted to say I enjoyed it more being second, more/ better fighting. We still get a few decent fights ever night in the oceanic time zone though.

No Report feature for Exploits

Everyone says catch them on video but I’m guessing the majority of people in WvW wouldn’t have a capture program. Even if you do you can never really tell when your going to see a hacker and keeping fraps or whatever always o slows down my puter (just a little), and clogs up the Hard drive.

It needs to be an easy function for people to use.. Maybe even bringing up a way of getting the last person targeted since its much harder to get stealthers.

Last night we had some good fights late NA timezone to early Oceanic. My congrats to the JQ team on SoS BL that was using an interesting combination of confusion and necromancer skills in 20+ vs 20+ combat.

Lots of fun, wins to both teams and good to see variations in tactics used by commanders!

yeh it is a remarkably lethal combination against bigger and balled up groups… stay tuned for some more interesting tactics being worked on

And I would like to thnak the foo kharma train immensely for turning the SoS bg green, was a hell of a ride.. and fun zerging sos into the dust for a change.

To the OP: Do you have a proposal? Do you want thieves removed? There’s no conclusion here.

No conclusion? That’s short-sighted. If the communities informed and aware then it places ArenaNet in a position to be more proactive about it. An uploaded utube vid that used fraps is our best detection and report mechanism? Seriously?

As it stands for report mechnisms in game the d/d bunker ele in the vid could right click the thief (when hes not stealthed) and report for….. i dunno… botting?

yeh I still can’t believe there isn’t an easy report function in game

with the way culling is right now and the abundance os stealth it is very hard to catch many hackers.. and they are quite prevalent i see them often enough in wvw, and those are just the ones I do notice

for some reason I think a curvilinear approach to scoring in the glicko system may be better. At times it feels like the system takes far too long to make needed changes that may seem small, like moving a top server in that tier up or another that is losing constantly by a marginal amount down.

Is corrupt boon considered bugged or not?

Its a pretty crappy skill tbh…somebody might have stacked 15+might with vigor, rejuv, swift with 30 secs and all kinds of other boons and it turns them into these weak conditions…not thx.

Its good when guard use that skill that gives them all boons when they’re about to die, but even then boons are way to easy to come by for some classes and clensing them also isnt really hard.

They need a complete revamp of how boons turn into conditions…For instance vigor turns into bleeding, but guess what vigor stacks duration, while any bleed under 8-10 stacks is crap.
I also noticed that duration isnt transfered, so lets say 30 secs of swiftness doesnt become 30 secs of cripple, altho that may have something to do with how easy it is to remove conditions.

For instance, D/D eles are often running around with highly stacked boons, and on more then 1 ocassion of droping this skill on them thinking they’re dead now for sure, they would have 80% of conditions cleared and restacked in 7-8 seconds while im left there looking stupid for another 30.

tl,dr: crap skill, dont use

edit: gave me an idea…what if instead of turning the boons into condis this would “implode” boons, dealing damage for every boon, but also higher for stacked boons (might).

yeh i would like to see the conversion system updated.. for instance might should be turning into blleds as they are both the most common type, short bleed like 3 secs but still.

The issue with it is it is quite badly affected by terrain, more so then many other skills for some reason, it should be more like epidemic it has a long enough cooldown to justify something better.

Dagger/Dagger Bunker Elems, in WvW

I made a guide for fighting these guys that I hadn’t bothered to link yet..Here it is and I haz video

If you don’t feel like clicking scary links here’s the overview

Dagger elemental have some very decent damage to look out for but it is usually attached to chain attacks that can be quite visible and easy to counter if you know them. Their opener is usually the skill Lightning Flash and Updraft which is a quick engage and a follow up skill to knock you down. From there they will switch to fire for the big damage combos, interrupt them here and stay out of fire. Just remember that these fire aoe’s are lines and only affect you if you pass through so either stay within or dodge through.

Just remember that in this fight fear is your friend, save them as you may need to to interrupt these chains rather frequently. Anytime they look like they are breathing something you need to avoid or fear. One skill is Drakes Breath which hurts, the other is Cone of cold which heals them a fair bit.. try and fear the water one.

Tips

  • Putrid Mark should be saved for when your getting a little overwhelmed by conditions. Use when you either have the fire condition as that kitten hurts, or best time I think, when they are in water atunement as they will stack a decent amount of chill. Fighting an Ele with chill makes it a lot harder to avoid the big hitters.
  • Poison cloud is useful to throw in as bunker ele’s have a ton of healing. Best time is when they switch to water. Also while it may be hard to maneuver in the right way with how much they move but using the Necrotic Grasp on staff adds extra poison if you fire through it
  • Well of Darkness is a great pick as most of their damage is up close so putting this down and standing inside gives you breathing room whether they stay in or wait outside of it.
  • Focus is my usual off hand of choice, which is a better choice over dagger here. Spinal Shiver’s is invaluable as it can give you regular boon removal and chill. Save for regeneration in particular. Also Reaper’s Touch gives you regeneration which is nice for these long drawn out attrition fights.
  • Switch into death shroud just after the initial 2 Air attacks as the brunt of the damage comes after from either fire or earth. Also switch when they are close to you and in air, lightning whip hurts for a spammable.
  • Churning earth = watch the kitten out, it will usually be channeled away from you with doing a lightning flash onto you right near the end. Easy to see and with a few seconds cool down you have time to do damage then fear.. Placing a Reaper’s Mark on your feet negates it.
  • Trait Death Magic VII – Reaper’s mark. Dagger Ele’s will be knocking you down often in order to guarantee big damage chains, annoy them immensely with this trait.

My Build for this…

Necro fear bomber. Not really suited in terms of 1v1 as it is my group pvp spec but here’s some notes for it :

  • I’m a noob and need greater marks
  • Retaliation on death shroud. DS is a punching bag, make them hurt a little for hitting it
  • life force on marks – who could say no
  • Reapers Protection – nice back up fear
  • Soul reaping trait III, great for extra fear and I tend to like Transfusion as it is actually a decent group heal
  • Rune of nightmare – with this and the other fears you end up interrupting, them quite often. Fear is always disorientating as they turn the camera around, in combo with others you are putting a fear on them every 10 or so seconds which is nuts.
  • Hybrid power/condition.. I feel like power adds more weight to your attacks over the bleeds from precision and this way life blast hits for a decent amount.

..Also if they want to run your probably not going to catch them

yeh it definitely hits whether or not you start the channel before or after stealth. I have transfusion traited, when you see those green numbers you know somethings working

Annoying Sound Bug

I’ve been getting this a lot lately.. scared me the first time by just how loud it is.

Exiting the gw2 process fixxes the sound bug so it is definitely the game. All sound drivers up to date and this is a relatively new computer anyway.

I really like this game aswel but gw2 is just that .. lots of potential. Cant believe that ppl say that game is just fine when pop is droping really fast not just becouse of the thieves, 100b, shatter or some other crap that is easy to counter.. problem is just … conquest lol.
Yeah some1 probably will say “i like conquest, ppl just need l2p” why l2p a game mode that is poop. And probably people are like, meh tournies are boring im going back to wvw with my guild.

The problem with adding different game modes now is that it will segment the already small community more.. maybe in the future if they do eventually add required features and the community returns

hey there I’m from aus as well. I am no where near pro or anything and mainly just fap around in hot join but I’m on quite a bit. Have done a couple tournies here and there with mixed results.

I’m mainly doing WvW with the guild but always up for some spvp
