[Raid - Discussion] Removing Enrage timers

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

LegACy.1296

I quite like the opening post here, seems like a reasonable fellow =D
Anyway, let me ramble a bit.

Initially, I, like many others, thought the enrage timer was there to make sure player cannot cheese the boss fight with full tanking gear or something. But nope, recently I realized that enrage timer was there to encourage players to do as few mistakes as possible.

You see, recently I tried high tier Swampland fractal with pugs. Well, it didn’t go well. 3 party members died right away, so then I tried to fought by myself (condi necro here), expecting to die soon-ish. Fortunately, while I was soloing the boss, the 1 living party member left took the initiative to ress all the dead players. Now all members have been ressed, we continued the fight, though 1 player seems to unable to dodge the boss’ charge attack and keep dying (and getting ressed).

In the end we killed the boss, but I don’t feel like we won anything. The whole fight was a slugfest with people busy ressing and getting killed. I mean, yeah sure, we get the reward and stuff, but it doesn’t feel like we’re good at the game or anything, we just won through sheer stubborn-ness because the fractal doesn’t really punish players for making small mistakes.

And that’s why enrage timer is needed. It’s to prevent player to win through mass ressurection. It’s to encourage players to actually outsmart and outplay the encounter. I’m sure a lot of raiders have experienced a “messy kill”. While you got the reward, I don’t think it feels good as beating the boss super quick in 1 shot with no one getting downed, right?

Go to Bloodstone Fen and fight the Unbound Guardian. Lern that fight and then you got your first easy mode boss.

100% this. It is an intelligent reuse of assets and it is great way to learn a bit about VG mechanics without having to form a group to raid.

What mechanics? Any “mechanics” of legendary unbound guardian could as well be just visuals for how much they impact the fight (hint: none at all).
It’s as if devs decided to make a jab at people asking for easy mode raids, by using a strawman example of one (and hinting using the name of the achieve that’s the best people can count on seeing). Any ties to vale guardian are nothing more than a bad (and definitely not funny) joke .

-.-a
To be honest, if Unbound Guardian isn’t anything close to what you have in mind for easier raiding, then I’m not sure what exactly is it that you want from this game =/ (I mean, well, you could be into pvp or wvw a lot, but then why bother posting in a raiding thread)

Is Raid reset day final or subject to change?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: LegACy.1296

LegACy.1296

Final? Definitely not, since they actually changed WvW reset time like 3 years after not changing it.

Highly unlikely? Pretty much. Besides, a lot of groups probably have set their own schedule based on the raid reset, changing it at this time is just asking for trouble IMO.

Anyway, IIRC one of the raid devopers said that they have their reason for choosing Monday. I’m not sure, but I think it’s because on weekdays it’s the time where most players can login consecutively? So if a group starts on monday and only kill a boss, most of the players in that group can continue with the next bosses for the rest of weekdays. So basically they’re trying to avoid interrupting a group’s raid progress in the middle of the week.

Did GW2 fail in China?

Lately on reddit there have been a person showing off GW2 chinese low-manning and speed clearing raid and they seem to be enjoying raid:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/4t00uw/gw2_cn_5_man_vale_guardian_kill_remaining_0139/
https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/4sbnhc/gw2_chn_gorseval_6_players_0516_no_updraft/
So seems like their behavior isn’t as different as us here.

Anyway, I don’t know about failing. Did it kill WoW there? No, of course not. Does it have healthy population and does it keep getting updated as fast as the wester version? Absolutely. So I think GW2 in China is as dead as GW2 in the west

A Thought From a Non-Raider

Yep, what these guys are saying, so, so much.

Before anything else, you have to decide: Are you actually hoping for a kill, or are you just trying to experience it. Just make sure the other members have the same opinion with you on that.

Though in my opinion, the fun in raids comes with actively trying to kill the boss, with trying to figure out what you could do to improve your kill chance. Without it, there’s not really much in raid.

I get that, which is fine for LFGs, but attempting to join a guild is met with the same problem, you are expected to fit 1 roll and use 1 build only, don’t do that or use a different trait or not ping specific buffs or consumables you are not allowed to participate and met with hostility, atleast in my experience.

To me it seems it drives people away from joining in on content which to me wouldn’t that make content dead and not used? To me the responses I’ve had and guild’s I’ve attemnpted to join and pretty much everyone of them with unrealistic expectations and meta mindset has put me off even trying the content as it seems futile at this point. Now you get someone new going through same experience, bam another one put off trying something they might enjoy. Before long you have a tiny group enjoying content and refusing to let anyone else join in.

Well, you see, raid has 2 components needed to be cleared. 1) mechanical ability (positioning, dodging and stuff) and 2) team composition and build. For most teaching guild, they feel like they have no need to teach you the 2nd one, since you can read it yourself outside of raid. So they focuses on number one and expect you to understand point 2 already. Would it be better if they teach point 2 as well? Absolutely. Does they have time to set aside to teach point 2? Not really.

I think the problem is the attitude of leaders who demand without explanation and reject those who choose not to because they have not had the experience of a raid. I lack the raid experience and thus do not know what works best, I also do not know the leader and they do not know how I play and perform, expecting someone to fit a roll in content they have not experienced or had the chance to experience and reject them based on that is bad. I really don’t get why you do not understand this?

Then help me understand it. Unlike some people here, I’m not interested in insulting you, I’m interested in understanding what problem you actually have.

Anyway, try seeing it from the leader’s perspective. They have a few roles that needs to be fulfilled by the group members so the run can be a success. To them, it doesn’t matter who filled role A, role B, or role C, as long as those roles are fulfilled. To them, it’s better to have people inexperienced with role A fulfilling that role rather than not having anyone with role A at all.

And it’s not only newcomers who experience that kind of stuff. If a veteran group if lacking, say, a healer, then they will look for that healer. If a super veteran pro guy comes along but he doesn’t have healer, then he will get the kick as well, since the group needs a healer, not anything else.

Ohoni, if they made fractal out of the current raid wings, would that satisfy you? Just make it so every fractal is 2 boss or something (like VG + events + Gorseval, etc). They would have super similar experience with raid I guess (other than the challenge)

Revenant is my primary and I go for more dps than anything. I don’t know what the ideal way to do raids is because I haven’t had the experience of a raid yet due to the attitudes and restrictions of others.

Okay, this is going to be interesting…

You see, Revenant’s actual role in a raid is NOT dealing damage (surprise!). Instead, the reason why most group want Revenant in their composition is to provide Fury and increase the duration of mesmer’s Quickness buff. Oh, and also to provide cc for breakbar with staff. Their DPS is just a side bonus.

I think one of your problem is that people does not explain this stuff to you. Well, do keep in mind that people also need to explain raid mechanics to you (like standing on VG’s green or that VG splits every phase change). Most people decided to focus on explaining the raid mechanic instead of raid build and composition, since you can only experience raid mechanic inside the raid, but you can try build and composition anywhere else.

There could be another problem though. You might say that you don’t like simply being a boon bot like that. Well, I’m sorry, if you’re joining a group, then you need to do what the group asks. The only other alternative is to start your own group, then you’re free to do as you please

LegACy.1296

Anyway, you laid out the counter argument for your proposal in what you wrote:

The fact is that raids accomplished a great deal for the game that was truly needed. They introduced content that genuinely requires intelligent play and sticking to mechanics in a game in which, other than the two large world boss events, no mechanics really mattered and autoattacking was good enough to clear anything. They took the control and support roles, which had never actually had any value for the life of the game, and made them useful, rewarding, and heck, worth running. They introduced a reason to actually make use of some of the enormous variety of stat sets that have long been in the game but for just as long had no purpose beyond leveling crafting. They did a lot more, too.

You see, raid did all those great things exactly because they’re hard and there’s no easy mode. If it’s easy, why bother doing anything other than autoattacking? If it’s easy, why bother using cc or healer? If it’s easy, why bother thinking about stat sets like condi armor or healing armor?

I want raids that are more like dungeons in terms of risk, where wipes are relatively uncommon, and punishment for failing a mechanic is not an auto-defeat, not even an auto-down, but just some damage that maybe you can recover from and continue. I want failure to have just enough of a slap to it that you’re aware you messed it up, without being so harsh that you cannot recover and continue the fight. Only repeated and significant skill failures should result in actual wipe/reset.

But that’s… not challenging then. That’s not the “challenging group content” that was listed as one of HoT’s features =/ What you asked is basically a dungeon or a fractal.

LegACy.1296

Kind of. I want to experience and figure out what works for me, and the role thats required of me, again what others think is optimal may not be optimal for me. I can’t simply be a close range fighter for ages then simply switch to range/support and be expected to perform the best I lack the experience with those skill sets and the mindset. And due to the barriers people have placed and experience required no one including myself can achieve that experience. They are expected to just load up and perform amazing.

In gw1 I sucked as a monk even with the best builds and suggested builds because I could never get into the mindset and lacked the experienced required to run the build efficiently. Same problem here. If you demand someone use a build they have no experience with or fit a role they have no experience with you will get nowhere and they will be just as big as a problem as they were previously.

Now, if only you communicated it as clear as this previously XD

If you’re strictly talking about roles though… It’s not that different from other PvE though. What particular class style do you like? If you like melee DPS then Guardian, Warrior, and Revenant is for you. If you like ranged or AoE DPS go Elementalist. If you like doing condition DPS then necromancer is for your. If you like buffing and tanking, Chronomancer is for you. And if you like healing, Druid is for you.

Then again, I’m still not sure. In your head, what’s the ideal way to do raid?

EDIT:
Also, “They are expected to just load up and perform amazing.”
Well… you’re expected to learn how to play your class OUTSIDE the raid since you can do it outside as well. Like, I only recently play condi necro and I alreayd memorized the skill rotation before jumping to raid as necro =x

Ah… I think I see what you want.

Basically you want to be able to experience raid and figure out what build and tactics are best for a boss fight instead of being told what to do. Understandable, figuring out tactics is part of what makes raid enjoyable as well.

Well, if that’s what you want, then you’re right, it is far too late for newcomers to try to figure out what tactics to use. Sorry, but the only time you can get to plan out tactics is probably on during the first week after a raid wing’s release. After that point, most obvious tactics have been figured out and people are expecting others to just follow that tactic. Like, you’re not expecting to figure out tactic again on CoF, right?

Okay…

1. No, it’s not impossible for a newcomer. I’ve read stories about people who just started raiding every time. And there are teaching runs everywhere, especially if you’re playing on NA. They are the perfect entry point for newcomers. And if they require killproof and stuff, they’re probably not teaching runs.

2. Yes, some (most?) teaching guild will require meta build. But cloning the meta build isn’t impossible for newcomer

I’ve read a little about LFR raids in WoW and it doesn’t seem such a bad idea (on paper at least). Could you elaborate why puggable raids that prepares people for higher tiers is such a big mistake?

AFAIK with LFR you’ll be partied together with some random people. So if the encounter needs 2 tanks, 2 healers, and 6 DPS, the game will simply search for people with those professions.

The reason why some people think it’s a big mistake? It eliminates the sense of community and camaraderie that comes with raiding. Instead of befriending with the people in your party, people simply see their party as a tool to get their reward. Instead of having to coordinate and cooperate with each other, every person just do their own thing. Kinda similar to GW2 dungeons, now that I think about it XD

Besides, it DOESN’T prepare people for higher tier. At LFR tier, people could ignore some of the raid mechanics, and in turn, they didn’t realize they need to learn that mechanic. Like, in lower tier fractal you may be able to pass by simply spamming skill at boss and facetanking the damage, but in higher tier you’d want to dodge and break bar, etc, something you won’t actually learn in the lower tier.

General question about fav content.

The only thing stopping you from getting LIs however, is yourself.

Says the guy in one of the next two luxury spots:

Joined raid guild before Vale guardian launch. Had all LI up till now cause of perfect preperation. Never gets kicked cause 60+ LI

Or 450+ member guild with enough people, that are ‘hardened’ enough for raids, to organize and succeed one. Not everyone has this luxury. Guilds like this, usually play very few wvw/pvp. No guild is perfect for all following aspects: Guild mission, pvp, pve, dungeons ,fractals, wvw, raid, world bosses, living story, etc. The 450+ guilds that do raids usually lack in pvp, wvw and living story. (I know it from own experience, i researched many guilds CAUSE OF THIS HUGE ’can’t join raid’-problem).

Technically, everyone have the luxury to create their own LFG group

(Oh BTW, you’re missing another type of person, the one like me who simply pug and killed 4-5 bosses each week)

Again, you should count it for EACH armor piece:

Kill 9 bosses a week = 3 weeks
Kill 8 bosses a week = 4 weeks
Kill 6 bosses a week = 5 weeks
Kill 4 bosses a week = 7 weeks
Kill 2 bosses a week = 3 months
Kill 1 boss a week = 6 months

But then again, you CANNOT craft the legendary armor if you haven’t killed the 9 bosses of raid. If you have killed all 9 bosses, I really, really doubt that you’re only going to kill 1 or 2 bosses each week.

At first I was thinking that 150 LI is a really big amount, 90 would make more sense.

What I didn’t take into account back then was, 150 LI is for the WHOLE armor. With PvP backpiece, you need 60 days of ranked PvP (10 weeks timegate, if you’re counting the off-season down time) to craft A SINGLE piece of equipment. While for armor you only need 3 weeks to craft A SINGLE piece of equipment.

To be honest? I’m more worried about all those Gifts the armor will require ._.

P.S. it would be interesting if they make each piece require different amount of LI. Like the chest require 50 while glove maybe only require 10. I think that could reinforce the fact that the armor may be crafted one by one.

Interesting…
I see you’ve progressed quite far in the raiding and managed to regularly finish Twisted Maze every weeks. Yet I see your constant complaining about the amount of raiding people have to do in the other thread.

What’s more interesting, 2 weeks ago you did say this:

As someone who cant do the raids(age, disability’s etc)i just hope the 35k gold i got from gem purchases is enough to buy 125 insights i still need and finish this armour. Was it set at 150 to make it very costly for people like me? buying runs is a long standing tradition in guild wars, and like it or not it is allowed and was going to be used by some to get this armour.

…wait, I thought you already opened all those chests in the 3 weeks the new wing has been out? (which implies you’ve at least beaten a boss, considering the collection doesn’t even unlock without beating a raid boss).

So which one is real?

EDIT: Oh wait, from your other posts it seemed that you bought raid runs. So basically you complained that you bought 3 wing 3 runs and didn’t get a single ectoplasm? XD

I’m on the camp that feels 150 LI for the full set is a bit too many.
4 months time gate is quite a lot imo. I think 20 per piece (which totals to 120) would be more okay, since that’d make it a 3 month gate instead of 4. Note that provisioner tokens has a timegate of around 1 month.

Or… they could make LI be purchasable with Magnetite Shards Like 40 shards per LI. That’d give players the option to speed up the acquisition if they wish to do so. Now it’d only need 13 weeks instead 17, and players who have been raiding from the start must have gathered tons of those shards, basically rewarding their work so far.

Then again, I’m still not sure how the collection will go. Does it mean we’ll need 450 LI for all 3 types of armor? Which would mean we’d need a full year of raiding .

As for your experience, well, whenever I pug, I have NEVER ever seen the group take people from the LFG tab. They simply open up a new entry in the LFM tab. And from my experience, on Monday when I want to raid, I simply started my Elder Wood quick logging run (southeast of Malchor’s Leap), and usually found a group in the LFM before all the elder wood has been gathered (granted, it will be harder if I’m looking for a specific boss run like matt).

Sorry, but this is WRONG. The amount of shard for wing 1 bosses has stayed basically the same since raid was first released: 10 for VG, 14 for Gor, and 18 for Sabetha (though I may be wrong and Gor at one point only gave 12 shards). And there’s also the 8 shards from the mini events.

Should shard cap for raids be changed?

Boss drops worth more than the shards themselves? Don’t make me laugh, that’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve heard all week. I’ve cleared the raids enough times to purchase a full set of ascended armor purely from shards.

In that time, I’ve gotten 1 ascended boots.

Yes, the boss drops are fantastic and valuable, please tell me more.

Yes, because anecdote is a valid proof. Here’s mine: since the raid started I have like… 10 ascended drops maybe (including weapons which is priced higher than armor), and the ghostly infusion. So yes, to me the boss drops are pretty decent, considering raid and pvp is the only thing I do these days.

Honestly, as far as the game as a whole goes, raids didn’t provide anything that could not have been done better with 5 person instance based content.

Nope, sorry, gonna have to disagree with you on this one. I played raid (and stayed in the game because of the raid), but I hate, hate, hate fractal. Hell, I think before HoT my fractal level isn’t even 20.

So yeah, raid actually offers people like me something that the game didn’t provide before, so that’s a good thing.

the raid mechanism for the Vale Guardian fight is not terribly exciting or engaging IN MY OPINION. the actual raid wing itself is a (in my opinion) very uninspired “tank and spank” . it’s a tiny bit difficult, but only because twitch and running to the right place at the right time.

Just wondering, which fight on GW2 that you think is more exciting or engaging? I mean, if that’s “tank and spank”, isn’t every GW2 fight is tanking and spanking then?

i join a group advertised here and on reddit promising to be friendly and open raid training. i get stuck in a “gear check” list, and i can’t even make an attempt until i ping all my gear to someone in charge of the group, and he decides if it’s meta enough or not… and when i say anything even remotely questioning or disapproving, i am told “don’t you want to be the best you can be?” I was running a Viper’s druid before it became a raiding meta. i’m in full ascended. i’ve been playing a ranger for 3 years. i’m not playing a flavor of the month or a PvE fun wtf build. let me run with what i got. i felt unwelcome and frustrated in what was supposed to be an accepting training group. i left them without having even once run or even attempted VG with them.

I just want to say that those people probably just want to help you and doesn’t really meant you any harm. Months ago during a raid we have a necro who’s running minion build. We were talking about whether minion build can work for this raid or not and asked him if he has a more condition damage oriented skills. The necro then just left, without a single word. Seriously, we want to help him choose skills that’s better suited for the encounter, not berating him for picking the wrong skill =/

people are running shortman and speedruns already. and several people in this very thread have said “it’s not really that hard”. if that’s really the case, then people shouldn’t be bent out of shape if one person isn’t 100% efficient.

I have a confession to make. Last week I played necro and my monday raid cleared wing 1 + 2 of w2 bosses with super ease (we phased VG with 7:05 remaining for god’s sake). But to be honest? While my armor is full viper, one of my accessories is actually exotic and one of my asc ring even has toughness on it. Yes, I’m not playing at 100% and we still do awesome on the bosses, BUT I still feel bad for my other raiding members. They’re all probably playing at their 100%, yet here I am disrespecting them by playing with crappy stats =/

(huh “giimped” is apparently censored to “kitten” =x)

Did Heart of Thorns ruin the game?

No.
Without Heart of Thorns I wouldn’t be playing the game these days.

I don’t like guilds, and they don’t like me. I play like a super neckbeard hardcore nerd, but I have the mindset of a casual — in other words, I play a lot and I play well, but I don’t treat the game like a job, and just have fun with it. So, I have to either go with a hardcore guild that can keep up with me but sucks all the fun out of the game, or join a casual guild that drives me crazy with their incompetence. Both of those just wouldn’t work for me.

Have you actually even tried a GW2 raiding guild? My current (and the previous one too, actually) raiding guild is pretty relaxed, there isn’t even any set schedule for raiding, just people simply asking in guild chat “anyone want to do first wing?”. And they usually got answer quick if it’s monday or tuesday. Hell, some group in the guild don’t even mind taking people with no kill experience.

If they’re so afraid of people getting loot, just make all ascended drops in the raid soulbound, and magnetite shards per character. Boom. Now you have a reason to constantly run with all your characters.

Uhh, I don’t understand it. If that’s the case, people will simply just run the raid multiple times with THEIR GUILD then. I mean, I will just simply raid at Monday on my Tempest, then on my DH at Tuesday, then on my Necro at Wednesday, and so on =/

Well, one reason I get kicked every now and then is because I like to play a power Scrapper

Ah, I see why you’re having problem then =p

Suggestion: Option to quit GW2

LegACy.1296

And why would Anet do that? One of the biggest boon of GW2, to both Anet and the players, is that player can’t really quit the game. I’ve seen plenty of people who stopped playing GW2 shortly after the launch then come back 2 years layer. So yeah, it allows player to take a break and it gives Anet bigger revenue potential.

Just smh with this raiding community

I saw during the last two days, while look for a group to do Sloth, two announces " 90+ Li only, eternal, gearcheck, killproof – NO FRENCH PLAYER ", " Only eternal +70Li, BE VERY EXP OR EASY KICK FOR NOOBS ", "Exp or kick, no missplays ". No wonder why people think the raiding community is toxic, and I honnestly think it is partialy true, a LOT of raiders are actually very toxic. I think it’s Anet’s role to moderate announces like this in the lfg, and to try to reduce the toxicity, when a player gets reported for insults, he must be looked at and things must be done for this kind of toxic players.

Edit : at the moment I’m posting, a group announces " eternal only, fail once = kick " xD

Yes, these are jokes and no serious requests. You forgot the “+99LI” because it was “+99 LI, eternal only, fail once = kick”.

Huh, why are you so sure they’re jokes? The hardcore-est of player probably already have that number of LI (seriously asking here)
