Major Concern- Mounts and "motion sickness"

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Lupini.6938

One other note is that my first time using the mount the motion sickness was far worse than it is now but I still feel it some when playing certain characters.

I would be interesting in hearing which characters are worse/better. It may be that the animations are slightly different for the races, and if so, that might lead to a clue in some minor changes that could be made.

As to the strafing comments: while strafing for a long distance would not be natural for a four legged animal, they can side step. Using the strafe keys while moving forward gives the player a much more gentle turn. It evens out those tiny micro-corrections so they aren’t as jarring. Right now, the raptor jerks with every little turn of the head.

Think of it as a new driver that over-steers their car, and an experienced driver that can anticipate and make tiny gentle corrections.

Another personal comment for any dev’s that may be listening in: When the raptor stops, it angles it’s body to the camera. It’s not straight. So, again, it makes it necessary to make tiny micro-corrections if you want to line it up on a ledge, etc. Without a “softer” movement like strafe/side-step, it’s a lot of twerking going on. I know the current stop animation is a side-slide, but perhaps the animal could then straighten out with the camera.

Thank you to all of you that are making the effort to give more detailed information regarding your experience, and to those that are understanding and not making negative responses.

I have seen some reports of people jumping off the ship and out of bounds and getting just dumped into the beginning city in the desert without finishing the story, too, but since the story leads you to getting the mount you’ll need for exploring, likely you should do the instance properly.

I didn’t jump off, but had an emergency pop up and had to log out. It does log back in within the city, however, if you go and interact with the green star, it starts the entire sequence over again.

Got it on the 3rd try. First two times I failed due to his timing, running, being behind something that got in the way when my item was way on the other side. Even if he appears to be in the green target area, if there is a counter or some other obstruction it won’t hit.

I stopped, watched his pattern, went around and tried to remember where everything was. After about 2 minutes of research tried again and got it. Sometimes you just have to wait for him to move to the next station if there is stuff in the way and do a quick throw.

How about some focus on this thread.

Those that are having problems:

Try to hone in on what is giving you issues. Stopping? Starting? Camera swing? Try to get specific, or the devs won’t be able to help. Try just doing specific movements, and noting what happens. Go straight without turning for a while, note if there are issues. Don’t do a bunch of random movements in a short burst and expect to be able to identify the issues—break down the movements.

This could be important going forward, this is only the first of the mounts. I’m sure the dev’s would like to know what issues are the most problematic now rather than later.

Those that aren’t having problems:

How about just ignoring this thread. We know a lot of people ARE NOT having issues. Most of us really like the concept of the mounts—there are several threads about how great the mounts are for you to share your impressions.

We aren’t asking for the mounts to be removed, we’re hoping to find solutions, and telling us that you don’t see a problem won’t help. We know it isn’t a problem for most of you, we really do. I actually love the resting animations, when it scratches in response to getting petted, or shaking and I almost fall off. I think it’s fun. I’ve even participated in a few races. However, this weekend is both a demo and a beta testing—we’re testing mounts and giving feedback. Our feedback is not wrong, it’s just ours.

I would rather just get the loot rather than have to fuss with unidentified stuff. It seems like putting an extra tax on us for loot drops, or more busy work. Someone pointed out that it gets rid of the “bag in a bag” problem, but seems like that could have just been dealt with by giving us another piece or two of loot rather than bags in bags!

I’ll probably just be lazy and salvage them. I haven’t gotten a precursor drop yet, and don’t really expect one ever.

Further input, perhaps the mounts could slide less to the side when stopping. As I’ve ridden around more, I think it’s more that swing to the side that gives me issues rather than the actual slowing down.

Something others that are having issues might think about, what about the start and stop with the “weighted” momentum gives you a problem (or really, any of the mount animations). Perhaps the animations could be fine tuned enough to preserve the feeling of a large mount’s momentum, without so much of an MS trigger.

Edited to add: those that are having issues with the stopping, stop by tapping your “Back” key (generally S), or tapping back quickly as you release the mouse buttons if you are using those. It straightens out the stop and makes it shorter. This is why I was thinking the sliding action may be what is causing a lot of folks problems. After starting to use this, I’m having much less of an issue.

Lupini.6938

As someone who usually has issues with motion sickness, I was a bit surprised at how well I did. I stopped playing LoTRO due to motion issues with mounts. That being said, there ARE some things that just make me a bit queasy.

The stopping/starting is MS triggering. I get that it is a big lizard, and perhaps not easy to stop or stop, but this is a fantasy game. The mount should stop just as easily as our characters. If we really were riding a mount, our bodies would get input from the way the animal moves, and we’d anticipate the motions. We don’t have that input, and designing the mounts to mimic those motions in the game without our being able to anticipate it ends up being jarring for the senses. The stopping issue also makes the attack skill really hit-or-miss.

It doesn’t change direction with the camera, like our characters do, so the mount is often moving in a different direction than you expect. I suppose this is true of real life mounts, you need to point their head the right direction, but it is something that causes frustration. Perhaps we’ll get used to it.

They don’t strafe, so there is a lot of fussy jiggling around trying to get them lined up, etc. All that twerking is just more motion for those of us with motion sensitivities. Perhaps we’ll get better at piloting them, but the lack of a strafe action really surprises me.

From “Edge of Destiny,” in the scene where Logan and Jennah are being introduced, all he does is affirm his loyalty to his monarch, and BAM, she mesmer-bonds him. Doesn’t tell him what it is, what it means, or give him a choice. Then, even though she knows of the mission to bring down a dragon, she calls Logan to her in the middle of the battle, compelling him, even though she ends up pretty much taking care of things all by herself.

From that point on, I do not trust Jennah.

The room is still too small, the camera angles suck. The barrels end up helping to keep you locked down because you can’t scramble around them fast enough if you get knocked into them. The time between being targeted For C’s special attack and his attack is far too short—people with really fast reactions might be able to dodge, but more often than not by the time you can react, he has hit you. Kiting around is not fun.

At least the subsequent tries, I knew about the room spin, and took some anti-nausea meds first. Honestly, who puts that sort of visual in a small encounter space. I just about vomited the first time. I just let myself die that time and logged out.

Lupini.6938

Overall, it’s pretty good. The new zone has some interesting mechanics, and while some may think “Training Your Dragon” is cutesy, the idea of eventually having a kick-kitten dragon to fight beside is something to anticipate.

I do not feel, however, that the instances are reasonable for all professions. The elite oozes along with other multiple oozes is overkill. Too many lock downs, without enough stun/immobilize removal, Aurene getting distracted, and my light armor classes (mesmer and ele) are just giving up and asking for help from guildmates.

Bitter Cold has the same results. Trying to kite the boss near the other mobs and get them defeated so they cripple the boss with light armor classes is not fun either. Why does everything have to knockback or immobilize these days, it’s just sort of lame. Again, I give up and ask for help.

I’m just frustrated because I understand the mechanics of the instances, and do them easily on other professions, but the squishies don’t fare well.

Edited to add: Oh yea, the elixir. For crying out loud, let us just buy it from someone or something, or get rid of us needing it after we’ve gotten it the first time. Seriously annoying that it resets daily when I can only play a few hours right after reset. Get the story done, and then screw that area.

Make story reward items salvageable

Yes please! Including karma-purchased gear. I worked for that karma, I should be able to salvage items purchased with karma. Even if someone did want to spend all their karma on items, salvage those items, and then sell the materials, that’s their choice. Gear rains down in some parts of the game, so that salvage-to-sell is already happening.

It is a bit like someone who was working on making all rewards salvage-able got fired and no one picked up the task.

[Suggestion] Squad markers for small group

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Lupini.6938

Lupini.6938

I occasionally help out just a few people on a map, and would like to have something like the squad markers, but for a group. I’m not always comfortable having a tag up, especially on busy maps where the tags are doing pre-meta events, etc. But being able to help out someone who is having a bit of trouble with a jump/glide, path, etc. by throwing a marker at a target/location is really useful. Would be great to have in story instances.

I realize the mechanics of it would need to be a bit different. Since it’s a small group, the markers could be placed by anyone.

Just figured it was worth the thought.

Season 3 too easy (spoilers)

Lupini.6938

You don’t have to defeat the cleric in the first phase — the cleric is almost easy to solo after the seeker phase fails. Any 3-4 people who can survive in Bloodstone Fen can definitely kill her (I think it’s always a female, but maybe not).

For the seeker phase, there are two strategies:

  • Kill all the infinitely respawning seekers.
  • Diminish the Cleric’s shield.

The first almost never succeeds; the second almost always does (assuming everyone knows what to do, which is a terrible assumption at the moment). The trick is to pick up the bloodstone shards and toss them at the shield; this denies the seekers their candy (slowing them down) and keeps the shield from powering up.

The main point is: the cleric’s shield doesn’t have to be dealt with; you just have to wait out the timer and kill the cleric after.

Well know I feel silly. Problem is, there have always been so many other mobs trying to kill me, I didn’t have time to figure out (read the icons) what things were doing what, or what needed doing. Thanks. I’ll just find some upper level to wait on for the other alts.

Season 3 too easy (spoilers)

in Living World

Lupini.6938

The only real section I have had issue with is getting the relic from the White Mantle Cleric. It’s in an area with other big boss mobs, in addition to it having a pretty dense population of mobs even when events aren’t happening. The ambient mobs on top of the event mobs makes things pretty rough sometimes. If it’s quiet and only one or two of you are around, it’s really hard to defeat the needed seekers—it’s like they take no damage without a ton of people around.

That section of the story is going to be problematic for people coming through in the future. I just don’t like the idea of story progression being tied to open world/timed events like that.

Very good question. This is the sort of thing we expected from gliding, or at least in the new mastery line. But no, it’s behind yet another kind of currency, and the skills appear to be character bound, not account bound. Plus, the currency is also used for an account bound portal skill for alts just to get in the zone without going through two relatively long instances.

I’m feeling pretty cranky about this, can you tell?

Agreed. This seems sort of mean-spirited. Promote us having alts, then throw things in the way of being able to play them where we want. Throughout the entire game there has been at least one portal into a zone. It may be multiple characters, but it’s still one player and this sort of grind is something we all hate.

I was also wondering about the flight skills. I’d have thought they would be under the Ancient Magic mastery line, or even under Gliding. Are those skills account bound, or do we have to do that for every alt? The description doesn’t say “Account Bound.” So I’m guessing we have to grind through the unbound magic over and over and over and…

Trying to get DS map, with population...

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Lupini.6938

Lupini.6938

I understand the OP’s frustration. Part of the problem is we do not need to over-load a map. I do DS a lot during the average NA “work day” around mid-day. We’ll have about 15-20 in each lane max. The events don’t scale up horrifically, and I even got the achievement for slaying the Mouth in under 20 minutes during non-prime time on a map that had probably 75 people total working on the meta (given the counts from the lanes and factoring in those that don’t squadjoin). Usually we only need about 3 burns on the islands. It’s gotten so I don’t like doing prime-time because the number of adds in the lanes is just stupid and the legendary bosses in the lanes take forever to kill. It is possible to get a blighting tower boss down with 5-8 people (I usually pick the boss group, so personal experience), and smaller zergs around the towers again mean fewer adds for them to run through.

We’re making it harder on ourselves than it need be—both in terms of trying to get people into maps before, and scaling the difficulty during the events.

Dragon's Stand Meta

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Lupini.6938

Lupini.6938

You aren’t the only one. The design of this makes organizing a meta very tedious, in particular, you can’t keep momentum going when everyone is booted off the map every 90 minutes.

Tips:

Start looking AT LEAST 15 minutes before the start of the event. If you need a timer:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Event_timers
Scroll down the page for Dragon Stand. I usually start looking 20-30 minutes before the event start time.

If you don’t start in a map that looks like it is organizing, check the LFG for stuff like “DS taxi” or “Org DS taxi.” Take that taxi, change instances, and drop group as soon as you are in. Squad members can use LFG for taxis, so these are for transport only.

Now, find a commander tag and join the squad. You don’t have to stay with that commander, but if everyone groups up into one or two squads, you have a better chance of all being put in the same instance after the zone clear. If you end up in a different zone than the rest of your squad, select the commander from the squad list, and join their instance quickly.

Once everyone is back in an instance together, the commanders that are actually going to lead each lane will tag up, and you can change to the squad/lane you prefer.

There are better times of day. I find mid-day (eastern/central time) to be a pretty good time to get a good map. I’ve had lunch time meta events that were very successful with only about 15 people at each lane/tower. Earlier evenings are usually also good, and weekend afternoons.

As I said, it doesn’t take a full instance to get this done. But due to the zone clear, everyone is so anxious about getting in a map that has ENOUGH people, we end up trying to fill-up an instance as much as possible, which leaves other instances empty.

Good hunting!

Since we had to take it down twice we were late, We all headed into the final area, got on islands and burned down the boss. I’m not sure if this is what happened, but I participated in an ENTIRE Dragon Stand event yesterday and didn’t get credit for the final boss (and no, I hadn’t done the event recently).

The groups on the islands were on fire—the dragon attacked two islands, didn’t get any of the ley line energy in the bar, and died just as it started on it’s third island. We had one spawn of the pod thing on our island, but the other island attacks were furthest away from my island, so I didn’t bother island hopping. I’m thinking I didn’t get enough damage in for participation?

If this is what happened, there needs to be some sort of credit possible for having 200% participation on the map and being on an island even if participants don’t do damage on the dragon. I mean, our legendary blademaster respawned! The sub-squad I was in killed that thing twice, but I get no credit for the final boss.

Scribing profession is unreasonable

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Lupini.6938

Lupini.6938

Scribing is ridiculous. This should have just been built into the guild hall system, like the mine, tavern, etc.

Take an individual system like crafting and bind it to a group-system like the guild hall just doesn’t work. Our guild has been great about supporting a few designated scribes, but even with a large guild it’s a lot of work. I can’t blame the “completionist” type for grumbling that they want to level their scribing and get the backpack skins, etc. However, it’s just a nightmare to try and be fair.

The random person thinks they’ll try to level scribing—they purchase a chair—the decription says “account bound”—but they can’t get THEIR chair. So, people stop donating chairs. Can’t blame them, that’s 50 silver they can’t use for their own crafting. They’ve already donated ley-line infused tools, sparks, linseed oil by the gallon, 18-slot bags even! They want just a few things to level the crafting, but if we have it open to all members, it’s just a mess.

I would really like to ask the person that decided that it would be a good idea to tether a personal activity like crafting to guild related outcomes “Why in the hell did you do this?!?” It’s not functioning well, it forces the guild to focus on a few for the craft, which in turn leaves others feeling left out or gated from content, and it needs to change—sooner rather than later.

Guild Hall Expedition Level Gated?

Lupini.6938

Forgive me if this info has been posted, I’ve been searching for several minutes and didn’t find any clear answer.

Can anyone answer whether the expedition to claim the guild hall will be level gated, or will members be auto-leveled?

With newer members coming in, and some veteran members that have just been playing very slowly, we do have people that do not have level 80 characters. I’m sort of hoping that the Guild Hall Expedition will at least auto-level people up (like Southsun Cove did when it was first added to the game during LS1), so that all of our guild can participate and not be restricted by level. If they know they have to be level 80, we may be able to prompt some folks to “get a move on.”

Thanks in advance for any responses.

Personal Story>The Battle for Claw Island>Magic Sucks Instance

I’ve done this instance for the story line before, and the “test weapon” Vacuumagic Polarizer worked well on the Orrian test subjects. Having just done this instance, the test weapon barely damages the test subjects. I repeatedly just dropped the weapon and killed the Orrian’s with my character’s regular skills.

It’s not progress breaking, since I could complete the instance. However, I couldn’t find a “Personal Story” category in the bug report system anymore, so I’m making a “FYI” post here. Something has definitely changed the damage output of the test weapon, or the Orrian test creatures’ toughness. The weapon doesn’t seem to build up the charges as described, and when it does have a charge, that seems to not do much damage, nor do the Orrians seem to have any “poison” or DOT.

It’s not game breaking but the weapon is pretty much useless, which does ruin the story for new folks.
