Best PVP Class - 1 January 2014

Here’s my list based on my experience playing mostly Elementalist, Necromancer and Warrior.

S Tier (extremely strong)

  • S/S + LBow Condition Warrior: extremely high 1vs1 potential, almost impossible to win against him in small scale engagements
  • Hammer + LBow Warrior: still extremely high amount of sustain and way to survive even with zerker amulet. One of the toughest engagement, even when played by not-so-experienced players.
  • Nodefighter Bomb/Grenade Engineer: when they are on a node, you know that you’re going to lose that fight. Insane amount of conditions and survivability.
  • Minion Necromancer: an extremely easy and extremely effective build in small scale fights. The only proper counter is killing minions, but you’re probably going to die while killing them. Asura Necromancer make it even more annoying to fight.
  • Bunker Guardian: still a must have in any team because of the crazy survivability and team support. There is really no valid alternative to it.

A Tier (strong)

  • Condition Necromancer: probably a tough encounter against a good one, but easy to outplay by CC chains or team focus.
  • Condition Phantasm Mesmer: solid build with good 1vs1 and small scale fights potential. I can often manage to win an encounter against them, but the downed state phantasm is just insane.
  • Berserker Warrior (Axe/Rifle/GS): way more survivable compared to other berserker professions, but at least they die sometimes. Extremely dangerous if not taken care of.
  • Trickery D/P-S/P thief: luckily, there aren’t that much around, but they are extremely dangerous if well played.
  • Spirit Ranger: halfway between S and A tier. Way more reasonable right now then before, but still extremely effective. Stupid easy and boring to play, pretty much because of the shortbow design.
  • Beastmaster Bunker Ranger: plagued by the same issue of Spirit Ranger (as they are quite similiar builds): shortbow. Other than that, strong build but with less team fight potential compared to Spirit Ranger.
  • S/D evade thief: still a strong build, nothing to say here. Haven’t found that much of them lately, though.
  • Power Guardian: good damage and good survivability, making them good in small scale fights but not useless in team fights. Sad thing is that people usually see Guardian as the bunker and there aren’t that much around.
  • Shatter Mesmer: high damage with decent survivability. Good in both small scale and team fights.
  • Berserker Engi: extremely glassy with extremely high damage and burst. The animations are quite obvious and the burst is manageable. Seems fair to me.

B Tier (mediocre)

  • D/D or S/D Fresh Air Elementalist: solild build, but it really lacks survivability to have a solid spot in the current metagame. The gameplay is similiar to a Thief (in’n’out style of play), but it lacks the escape options of the Thief, making it extremely hard to survive with.
  • D/D cantrip elementalist: good team support, kinda viable, but not worth picking compared to other professions. The damage is mediocre and the support is nowhere near the one provided by other professions like Spirit Ranger or Bunker Guardian. Mediocre teamfight potential, good small scale fights capability, but still inferior to other builds. This build really struggles to find a place in a team composition.
  • Power Necromancer: great damage and the survivability is now kinda ok, but the Condition Necromancer provides way more team fight and 1vs1 potential compared to Power Necros, while boasting a little bit more survivability.

C Tier (unviable)

  • Power/Crit Ranger: still can’t find a reason to have them in a team. They aren’t survivable that much, the damage isn’t that high and they aren’t mobile.
  • Staff Elementalist: there isn’t a good build to make staff work. It is good in teamfights, but it has no small scale fight potential whatsoever, making it a wasted team slot that can be easily filled by a much stronger engineer.
  • P/P Thief: nothing to say here. Completely unviable with no reason to play it whatsoever.
  • Condition/Venomshare Thief: a wasted slot in a team. Too much focused in 1vs1, while being greatly outperformed by other builds. No survivability while playing Venom share and the team support isn’t that much to consider it worth picking. Bad node defender due to stealth reliancy.
  • Vampiric minion-less Necromancer: a build focused around sustain with no sustain. Enough said.

+1 to this list.

I feel current sPvP is much to reliant on passives (healing sig, auto-attack, procs).

A) Skyhammer ‘breakable-pannels’ color change to red when stood on, regardless if player is stealth or not.

*Reason: Visually assist players from stealth pulls

B) Edge of Skyhammer ‘breakable-pannels’ glow red when the pannels are shattered.

*Reason: Visually assist players from accidental falls

C) Instead of falling to the ground, players now fall into a vortex and are hit by ‘shrapnel’ during the fall taking a 40% hp loss. If the player survives the shrapnel they are teleported to their home base without being classed as a kill and with no rez timer.

*Reason: Being knocked off the map is currently ‘op’ – so to speak. Not only are you hit with insta death + cost your team 5 points + rez timer wait & chances are you will lose the point.

To ‘nerf’ this function surviving the fall now means you bypass death saving 5 points and putting you straight back into the game.

The damage from the fall is requied to stop players exploiting the function by jumping off the edge if they are losing a fight.

D) The ‘hammer’ no longer knocks players down but instead causes 1/4sec (example) daze.

*Reason: You can’t dodge it and it does a great deal of damage so this is a simple nerf to give players a fighting chance. Also being knocked down is just flat out annoying.

E) The ‘hammer’ no longer instantly breaks panels but it does active them as if someone had stood on them.

A) Return Breakable panels back to original design of being NON-breakable, or remove entirely (Around A/C points only).
B) Like the idea
C) Interesting idea, but with removing the easy access to cheese kills via A, no need for this adjustment.
D) Hammer needs to be dodgable + size of the blast reduced by ~10%-15%
E) Again back to removing breakable glass entirely.

Reason for A) It does not encourage good play, just cheese, in my opinion, “Exploiting” of map terrain using certain classes is a bad thing for sPvP, talking tournament only! hotjoin is just free for all kitten about mode.

@ OP, If you are fairly new at the PvP scene then do not jump into Solo-Q straight away, fights are a bit different there.

If you enjoy support builds, like guardian for example, try tanking as many people as you can for as long as you can.

Then try and see how their animations look for the skills that you MUST avoid.

After that, jump in Solo-Q, yeah you will get some stuff thrown at you at start, but take that with a grain of salt and in time you be able to actually play sPvP according to the games design, not zergfest gloryfarm yolo

An argument for Skyhammer in SoloQ

Personally I really see the hard effort and work put into skyhammer.

The dev made this map after a very long time and many features ingame derived from the original designs of this map.

The design and layout of this map are beautiful!

That said, I understand that when the community after all your hard work comes forward and simply says…what a horrible map! that hurts the devs that are trying to provide you with new content.

However, all the above said, I do not think that it is a Tournament worthy map, simply due to exploit mechanics which de-position the already imbalance on classes.

I have played my warrior since alpha, even when no1 took a warrior, i still did, now their FotM, ok whatever, I can play this map, but as a fun map, I can not take this map seriously in Tournament perspective.

To many times people rage-quit, or all relog to engi / necro and just cheese mode the map. This is just not fun to play WITH or AGAINST.

Even on my engi, I still feel the map to be cheesy and really inappropriate in a tournament rotation.

So in my opinion Skyhammer is a beautiful map, but hot-join fun and giggles only. It does not belong in a tournament map rotation.

Edit: Sorry devs, I know it hurts keep seeing these things, and placing it in Hot-join only is the last thing you want cause it will end up like raid on the unicorn and just become a graveyard map nobody plays..

Except glory farmers..

But its just not a map suitable for tournament.

Solo TeamQ is basically the same as the OLD matchmaking system where you only had free and paid tourney’s

but coming back 2 see finally a split between solo and team q i thought that was a needed change (and it is) they do need to work on quite a lot of tweaks… proper matchmaking and MMR rating system would be a good start

In my honest opinion i think skyhammer is a fun created map.

However, it is indeed a map with some major design flaws when looking at it from a tPvP perspective. It should not belong in solo-q or any tourney for that matter.

Skyhammer = Fun map for Hot-join fun and giggles, absolute garbage for tPvP rotation

But that is just MY opinion

Although transcribed, I’ve also been around since closed beta, mainly focused on sPvP, the changes that have been made and optimizations that have passed since launch lets say, are absolute minimal.

From a business perspective I understand the playerbase is simply to small in this game’s PvP for the funding company to be a priority, but PvP does not work like PvE, the player base is more demanding and moves to something else faster.

I took a 6 month hiatus, when I came back I see a Solo-Q split from Team-Q, something that was LONG overdue.

So I jumped in, 2 days of playing and you find yourself in the top 150….seriously? Leaderboards still that poor? Its clear it still does not have a proper rating system attached and its still to volatile to be recognized as a leaderboard.

Balance wise it got slightly better, in 10 months, SLIGHTLY. I was glad to run into a few names I recognized in the 6v6 GvG on my 1st day back…

But it saddens me to see the stream was excited with a meager 600 people watching… come on people, Path of Exile, an extremely repetitive game has streams of 2k players watching someone do the same mindless buttonmash 3000000x and still watch.

Clearly the meta is unappealing in GW2 to watch and the playerbase much to low to become a priority, but the player will not increase, actually it will only decrease, untill the dev’s have the fundamental basics right, which since open beta have been discussed with the teams back then, like team curse (paradigm) and others, still some things from those suggestions that where recognized have not yet been implemented.

Has the gameplay improved in the last 10 months…not really, the meta shifted slightly, the skills are still NOT 100% split form PvE/WvW, which is an absolute must if they wanna get serious about their PvP.

All in All, improvement was made, but it took way WAY to long, and maybe in 1 year from now it will start to be close to the point it should have been at launch!

Anyways, just my 2 cents

EDIT: Why the hell is a map like Skyhammer even in the map rotation btw? Who was the genius behind that broken map? Fun map yes, Tourney map…not in a million years

My guild and I where excited to see the tokens arrive, so we gathered the gold and got the 20 token thing, only to realize that you need a Starter kit to even set one up, but this has not been released….

Kind of odd me thinks. Just release the arena’s already ANet, please!

Just…depressing statement really….we said this at day 1, before leaderboards, and NOW you have plans to address it.

Your statement at this point of time should be, “We currently are working around the clock to fix the matchmaking algorithm and splitting solo-q from pre-q.”

Plans to address it now means for us (the community) in about 50000 years we’ll start working on it after our coffee break.

I pretty much quit the game now, been here since day 1 of beta, but I just can;t wait any longer, dragging myself along in Yolo-q or any team, people just quit. meta is stale and boring, too much balance issues.

I;m back on LoL for my PvP…this thing…is an UTTER JOKE!

How to Make Warrior Viable

As already stated warriors are main in PvE, untill ANet finally wakes the Bleep up, and splits ALL skills from PvE vs PvP (So yes, 2 different co-dings for each skill, one PvE one PvP) balancing out Damage output in PvP vs PvE and Defense etc etc etc., the warrior will not become viable till this happens, because of the fear for making it into a monster in PvE aspects of the game..

We are not an Off-Tank, we are an Off-Class, we have no Niche at all, apart form some wierd kitten form of team support, but as a melee class..we didn’t get the tools to actually be efficient at melee, hell, a BM ranger with S/D + GS does better melee then a warrior does. kitten logic

Ease of watching – telegraphing:

For a PvP game that wants to be taken seriously, the difference in size between character models will be off-putting to quite a lot of viewers. It means that their skill telegraphs will be very difficult to see, not only for the players, but perhaps more importantly for the viewers. The Asura are the big problem here, and it is not uncommon to see full Asura teams because of this discrepancy in ability to see telegraphed skills.

  • Problem: It is simply not fun to watch what you can’t understand, as has been the
    idea behind this text.
  • Possible solution: normalize the size of the player models, have tourneys play out in fixed races.
  • Cost of doing it: some players will be upset because they do not feel that it is a problem.
  • Cost of not doing it: telegraphed skills not being seen by viewers leading to holes in the information that should be given but is not. Not being taken seriously because
    of these discrepancies; this can also lead to misunderstandings about hit boxes. Better telegraphing would also increase the intuition of when to dodge for newer players, and when someone should have dodged for viewers. It’s a nice mechanic, let’s make more use out of it.
  • Implementation: rescaling of player models seems like a viable option.

Just make all Character models scale too the exact same size, this will still give the players their class / race they wish, however I doubt many serious tPvP-er cares much about the Lore.

But You can take them for how their animations play out, but without getting an “Unfair” advantage due to smaller sized animations.

I got used to fighting them as a lot roll asura for PVP purposes. Being a norn myself and warrior at that, its easy to read my animations, asura’s are harder to read, but after a while you get used to it really, at least i did. This is just a early stage thing that I think you need to get used to first.

The problem is two-fold, for the new players they face off against opponents way above their current level thus making them feel bad in a match not being able to do much. And for higher ranks in that team its frustrating to constantly face half pre’s and full pre’s of ranks 40+ with 3 lower ranked players that don;t fully know how to play the maps mechanics etc.

Yesterday I was trying to get new people into pvp from my guild. most of them only played a few matches, so their MMR was low, we constantly kept facing rank 40’s, and thus they got frustrated and just said no thnx. I was sad i couldn’t get them motivated because they can’t play against people their own skill-level. Of course I did realise and explain to them that because of my MMR they would face people that where slightly higher ranked, but it was more like…rank 40’s – 50’s constantly…that gap is just to big.

1: Make brackets already, 1-10, 11-20, 21-30, 31-40, etc etc
2: Split solo from pre-mades, yolo-q got the name for a reason.

Currently I am deliberately trying to get my MMR down through Yolo-q’s so i can play with them, after they train a bit in Hot Join…which I know aint a good thing, but we have nothing else.

My r33 should not mean that with a lvl 6 and 3x lvl 10 in my team, I should face a full rank 40+ team. It just does not give any enjoyment on either side. At least, with my old team, we always appologized if it was a rofl-stomp match-up, we’d rather fight people our own level and have a nice balanced match, instead we mainly got lower ranked pug’s vs our full pre-made, got boring, the team quit.

Infact they keep buffing warrior that is UP in PvE thus resulting in being OP in PvP.

Same with ele that is OP in PvE/WWW but then became UP in PvP.

That people see a build and see how you play, does not mean they can make it work.

Copying a build is easy, learning how to play it and how to make it work, that’s the important part.

So even if you discover this awesome build for a class, for instance the HGH build, it does not mean by simply taking the traits and gears, you can play it. I’ve tried making over 50 different builds for my warrior now, looking at others, some work in tPvP some don’t, our problem is most builds are situational, I am looking for a lasting build. I know how i made the build and what the idea behind it is, just looking at traits and gear and sigils will not tell the spectator what the builds IDEA is, unless you tell them.

After that step, you gotta grow into the build and learn it.

But i could be wrong.

Depends on the Class really, for instance any melee class, more flat damage against boons means that for instance on bunker guardian with Retaliation you’re just going to kill yourself even faster. Stripping the boons is more interesting.

E-Sports was GW2’s secondary if not primary marketing thing. Custom Arena’s are way overdue, same for Spectator mode, but now the Custom Arena’s will not be freely available. That is just a horrible decision. I understand that they are having trouble finding a good way to make their micro-transaction scheme work, but putting a must have feature for E-sport in a gem store, makes it clear they have no clue what they are talking about when speaking of both PvP and E-Sports.

regarding the OP: Yes, this is common in Hot Join now, we do not have any dueling servers, 1v1, 2v2 or 3v3, it is just as annoying to the dueling players to keep having to inform people popping up that they are having a duel. Its both ways.

My 2 cents:

1: Leavers get a 1 Hour ban from Tournaments
2: Repeated leavers get 1 week+ ban from Tournaments

Note: If in the case of a DC, Normally that person will try and rejoin as soon as possible, when rejoining the penalty will be wiped.

How about small icons, like Conditions and Boons above the skill bar (meaning the left side skillbar), that become visable like the un-numbered cooldown’s on your skillbar?

This would take up no space, wont clutter anything,and just a matter of time for us to recognize the new icons and fit them to what trait they go too.

@ Allie and Johnathan,

Split the skill stats (Damage output, etc) from PvE/WvW and PvP, that will remove a lot of your problems regarding Balance for the classes in all 3 aspects.

WvW and PvP should never be considered the same, for elementalist you have shown you can split the way the skills work, -50% healing effectiveness.

People have bad expirience (Newcomers) with the burst of Thieves, Mesmers and Warriors, so reduce the direct damage output on their skills in PvP, but not before balancing out other viable builds. Its ok to ask the community to help you, (top tier players) with analysis on how the new numbers are (to low, to high).

Considering the current meta:

1: D/D Elementalist ( Burst healing is what makes it work, the rest is not the problem)
2: Engineer (Good for forcing bunkers off points)
3: Double Trap ranger (Can get bunkers from points fairly decently)
4: Confusion / Shatter Mesmer (Great bursting and Evasive skills, also access to a lot of stun breakers.)
5: Guardian (Great for Bunkering if roamer can help against aggressors fast)
6: Necro (Various builds, can do decent bunkering or massive condi builds, well’s really work for teamfights and res signet)
7: Thief (Great for sPvP, but less viable in tPvP, can spike burst down targets that are engaged in combat)
8: Various build variations depending on team composition
9: Warrior (Had 1 Dangerous cheesy build, now gone. Bunker is sub-par to any class doing it, Condi is laughable, condi removal is near neglect able.)

Step 1: Split PvE/WvW from PvP completely!
Step 2: Major and Minor trait revision / redesign.
Step 3: Fix Armor scaling vs Damage output in general (PvP)
Step 4: Weapon skills revision (Both normal and Burst GS F1 LOL)
Step 5: Be surprised if they’d get this far by now.

Another patch, another near nothing change.

Dev’s of ANet, you stated you track forums? We dont see this, at all.

Nobody asked for yet another flawed conquest map. Since you have a hard time, let me summerise it for you.

1: Custom Servers: So players can play against people in peace, 1v1 or 5v5, train and theorycraft.

2: Actual ladders and rankings. (no explenation needed)

3: BALANCE, by far the biggest issue, warriors need trait revision, you now broke mesmers, ele’s finally got pve/pvp split (You woke up?), thieves stealth still needs reworked (not broken or OP, just a bad mechanic the way it is, not fun for new players to fight against, thus making them leave and not growing the pvp community.)

4: Revision of the point reward system in matches, Capping points does hardly anything, farming glory is done by zerging around in Hot Join not caring anything about the capping points.

5: Different game mode, Conquest doesn’t work, never has never will, games tried this mode before, nobody is interrested in it.

6: Tournaments need to give an actual reward! Thankfully QP has been removed, but nothing was placed in return, and the chests where now handed out as candy, so you just slapped all dedicated tourney players in the face with a bigkitten

7:Viable builds, still either, condi, burst or bunker, and it depends on class, this simply means that your game-mode vs traitlines pushes people to these builds, others simply don;t do anything, because they don’t synergize with the team / gameplay for this mode.

8: Matchmaking, you state you have one, but..you don’t, where is teh lobby? the “interactive” lobby called the mists is not working, get a list one can register on, can’t be that hard to implement this, should be combined with an actual ladder / ranking system.

well there are more points, but start with those and you should make a lot of people happy. I withdrawn from PvP a while ago, and simply do it for the daily only, 15 mins a day.

Get your community back into PvP if you REALLY do want an E-Sports. March will be make or break.

RNG is a necessary “Evil” if you will, this keeps the market fluid and makes it so that certain items rarity is protected.

However, as Cloud above stated, the problem is Diminishing Returns, this mechanic that ANet introduced in order to combat the Farming bots, punished their actual players for playing the content as intended. If you get DR it will take 24 hours before it wears off. Meaning if you are simply in lets say, Cursed Shore, for the first time, you will be running around doing Events killing 1 type of mob, constantly, Risen and eventually DR will activate, it seems after the last patch to activate sooner then before and much more random.

Because I play a fair amount of hours I have experience with DR, I help my guildies out with anything they need regardsless if I have DR on me atm or not, generally have..sigh. Now I find myself simply doing as LITTLE as Possible so I avoid DR.

Yes, It scares active players, that like to be rewarded sometimes for killing mobs or doing events, to not play the game at all.

Something ANet really needs to address, simply by removing DR again. This is a flawed and utterly poor choice of mechanic.

Do not punish your active player base for playing your game!

I vote we replace Hot Join with Custom servers that players can make themselves, for Team practice, Dueling, Theorycrafting, etc etc etc, this option is LONG LONG overdue to be implemented.

in sPvP, Guess can be done in PvE as well.

As an Elementalist openly admitted in a 3v3 pvp match today to me, when he uses tornado form just before being downed, so last HP button click, his HP is increased due to tornado form, then using vapor form in downed state he automatically resses himself INSTANTLY!
Tornado form hp* 2 + vapor form +50% hp = over 100% downed Hp, thus automatically ressing.

This is both a design flaw as well as a exploitable issue, in a 5v5 match a bunker ele could keep outlasting with kiting and mist form for the Tornado to come off cooldown and upon insta-res get 50% to start with.

First available in a lvl 5 tier? Really…? Most small guilds (PvE oriented) specced into the others not WvW as it yields the least benefit, you’re totally screwing them over now, a 10-30 member guild would need a month or more to just get some influence towards tht t5 level.

Really really poor choice. Would have been much better to introduce an entirely new tech tree to spec into.

Maybe an idea could be for a re-structuring of the Influence earnings / costs of things, related to the license size of the guild.

For instance: starting guild banner cost is 200,

when upgrading to the 2nd license this same banner now costs 400.

That way the rates of obtaining Influence remain balanced to each other.

(This is just a rough idea that i just thought of)

They need to not only split gear but also the way Skills work and their stats. PvP vs PvE/WvW.

Yes warriors have the a lot of DPS and can tank quite well, however in PvP currently mainly useless, either cookie cutter noob 100b build, kill 2x in 5 seconds and die, or shout build to be able to remove conditions at a decent level. In PvE conditions are hardly of concern, so of course we become more dominant that way.

The problem as mentioned though is not nerfing the warrior, its buffing other classes and while doing this splitting PvP and PvE fully into two seperate stat systems. That will make balancing a lot easier.

Can’t Buff too much in PvE for Mob hp pools vs PvP player HP pools.

I Like Vorch’s idea.

Thing is that with these weapons is that many forget they are not for everyone, only for the hardcore gamers, as its the only thing for them left to work towards. Its not ment for casual gamers (1-3 hours a day) to obtain these weapons.

The method that Vorch above described would be perfect! Gift of Mastery and Gift of Fortune are still old style, thus meaning farming / tp purchases etc, completion etc etc etc (Enough RNG in here), Gift of (weapon) would still remain, but with an alternative Lodestone source (that is account bound, ANet making 2 different types Account Bound and Tradable is no hard work, many MMO’s have this feature.) and the Precursor will actually mean something sorta “Legendary” as it takes a story into account you have to work on.

Right now all i need is the precursor actually, but elas…..100+ meta-events later….not a single exotic even….bad luck i guess.

Not giving up though.
