Hmm that’s interesting. It’s very similar to the build Torqiseknite.1380 posted and said he/she uses. Is toughness weak against condition users though? Or I guess a better problem is, do you have any major issues with condition users? Your build ignores the condition duration decreases that others say is really important.
In terms of hoelbrak vs strength….I don’t really know which would be best for me they both look good. I’ll probably choose the cheaper one.
Could u give me an idea of how u fight with GS/Hammer though? Do you roam and engage with GS or start with hammer? Then what? Do you use the GS burst or the hammer burst skill ideally? Which of the two is your primary damage dealer in a duel/fight? You take heightened focus (4s quickness below health threshold) over merciless hammer (20% extra dmg, -20%cd), and the sigils imply that hammer is there for kiting/gapclosing/sustain. I find hammer difficult to use, I haven’t practiced much with it though. It’s definitely the go to crowd controller for warrior and the go to zerg weapon. I really like ur build though since it presents a middle ground between what I would think I need and what other people suggest.
One of the forseeable problems is all your skill cd times. It’s a 1 use per fight kind of deal. You will run out of moves much faster than any opponent. I’ve run the same thing cept without hammer and berserker stance and that’s always been the outcome. Hammer though is probably what redeems everything and I just lack experience.
I had a separate question though: What does everyone think of the ‘on kill’ sigils? Bloodlust, precision, toughness, healing power etc.
I was always curious on whether healing power granted significant buff to the health regen a signet/adrenaline health warrior has. My attempts at testing have gone badly.
Conditions are iffy. If I know I’m getting into a fight with hardcore condition then I’ll swap to cleansing ire to get the extra cleanse, and often time Ill swap endure pain to signet of stamina just in case. In general though, you just have to be careful and mind the condition bombs. I almost always start a fight with GS, try and burn their dodges, and see what they do from there. being able to correctly place your Earthshakers is really important, and I highly suggest binding sheathe weapon to a key so you can save your hammer skills if you know they’re going to miss. It is also really important to remember that arcing slice can hit like a truck (often times around 7k+ on glass builds), so I do use that quite often when I’m on top of them with GS out. If I get a good hammer CC chain on someone I’ll usually swap to GS to get at least part of a HB, and if the quickness gets on all the better. The reason I don’t take merciless hammer is that I find the 4s of quickness every 15s helps a lot more keeping up and bursting people down than the 20% more dmg, which doesn’t even come into play all too often. CDs can be tricky. It’s important to know when your stances are up, especially the endure pain from the defy pain trait. But sometimes things go down and you have to play a little passively until a stance comes up, but this doesn’t mean you have to kite madly or run away. Often times people get greedy when you get low, so this can sometime work to your advantage and kill them before they can anything. I do have issues with chronos and DHs, but that’s unfortunately just part of roaming atm.
I pretty much solely roam on my warrior and I’ve tested quite a lot of builds. Imho, your build just isn’t well suited for roaming. Gear wise, I would definitely say your toughness is way to low. Warriors have no access to any protective skills for the most part so having extra toughness is often vital. The magi stat on your warhorn is also kind of wasted, since the extra vital and hp isn’t going to make a difference. I would also say your rune choice is a bad one, simply because they won’t really help in a fight. Also, sw/k*ttenally just isn’t useful for roaming. Yes it has a lot of mobility, but it has no way of actually applying a lot of damage pressure, but warrior needs to do. Here’s the build I use atm:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vJEQJARSjMdQjH2FCWhAnIG6BKtNC/wwCgPICwdvHyBA-T1DFABVfIAa4IAgwBQok9HWSpQTKDA4BBUo6PXpEUgLAASKxcSJBBHQg001swBIIAACQA28m38mH6QH6QH6Q7m38m38m3sUAlr1C-w
I have always loved hammer so I usually stick with that. You just have to be smart with when you use the skills. I use strength runes because I find the extra 5% dmg is better than the -condi duration from hoelbrak, and the might duration really does help keep you strong throughout a fight. I also highly suggets mixing your trinkets with zerk and anything with +toughness. I opted for this setup because I find ti strikes a really nice balance with crit chance, power, and toughness.
Overall though I’d say one of the biggest problems is just your weapon choice. Go for Axe/sh GS or Ham GS. Mace/sh GS can work too, it’s just really difficult now with the excessive aegis and blocks around now.
I mean without going into any actual math, I would say that full zerk would probably provide more damage than a defensive set would provide defense simply because of the way the dps works out over time, but you have to remember that not only would this be an average, but it would also assume that everything works out in your favor. From my experience, it would be rather odd to land every skill perfectly, and I feel that because of this the added defense from a defensive set paired with intel sigils could have the potential to be more beneficial than full zerk. I don’t even think much math would be useful here, considering that the effectiveness of anything is going to depend on your play style. Some people will play better with a more defensive setup while others will play better with full zerk. I don’t think either one makes a player better by any means, I think it’s all in how they play. The whole mentality that the better players use full zerk is just wrong imo, and I think that the best players make builds that work the best for them.
I’m not going to say whether you’re right or wrong, but I will say that the math only matters to a point. I have, like you, been running full zerk for a while now, but I used to use a set of soldier’s armor with the rest zerk, and I have also ran with knights armor. I found myself doing well with those sets. and they definitely did help in situations where I normally would have been screwed. I’m actually starting to funnel in some more defense on my current build, since I’m finding that full zerk just isn’t cutting it against skilled opponents (emphasis on skilled). I would personally stay away from any kind of healing power, as I just don’t find or see it being useful for roaming on a warrior. But overall I would say it comes down to preference. Being super bursty is fun, and definitely effective (I have won plenty of 1vXs on my zerk set-up), but I also like surviving. I have found recently that full zerk war has issues with good mesmers, and while the reasons may be up for debate, extra defense really helps and the drop off in damage isn’t too noticeable.
TL;DR
Preference!
If you do by some miracle manage to dodge their spike attack they stealth and wait for it to recycle
^
Sweet! You actually have a very good point about condi bombs, and I think I’m def going to test out some new things because of that. Let the smashing begin!
I really love this build. After using it for a while now, I’m actually finding that I’m winning more of my fights. It requires more strategic gameplay than Sword imo, and it’s just kind of satisfying stunning someone for close to 4s and HB’ing away. I’m using all stances as my utils, but I’ll swap endure pain out for Signet of stamina if I know I’m about to fight a condi necro or so. In general I’d say the most important part of the build is patience. You generally can’t just walk up to someone and land a skull crack, as you need to blow through their stunbreakers, which isn’t really that hard to do. The block on mace 2 is actually amazing, and incredibly useful. I actually had it hit a thief for 6k yesterday which finished him off. Knowing when to use that block helps a lot I feel. Like if you’re fighting another warrior, just wait for them to use their GS 3 when they’re close to you since all warriors will do this, pop mace 2, block it and land a nice 4k hit (usually what it gets for me). Another important thing is being able to cancel your skullcrack which truly does improve your gameplay (still working on this- takes a while). I am using a cav amu, and sometimes swap in knights or cav rings also. That extra toughness helps a lot in general. I’m also loving the air + fire on GS as I’m finding it really amps up your burst, which I find especially useful on GS 3. The build can have issues with kiting, but it really depends. My advice with mesmers is just to save your GS 5 and 3 for when you really need them (mesmers are just a pain in general atm though so this is to be expected). Necros actually, surprisingly enough, can be difficult too. With condi necros just be aware when their condi burst is up (signet etc) and be prepared to deal with it. Also be wary of chasing them when they have all their staff skills up (duh). Also just be patient. I’m going to say it again, but patience is really big here.
Definitely continue making videos! Also I feel you’re being a tad humble dude, you’re quite a good warrior!
+10000
As others said they’re looking for the AA chain to continue. I also listen for the thief to shout “help” as it lets me be sure they’re downed.
I dunno I personally find D/D much more enjoyable, but that’s probably just me…..
Anyways, I actually have two sets of armor. Both are zerker, but one has Runes of the pack and the other runes of speed. I love the speed bonus from the runes of speed, as it truly does help, both in combat and out. D/D lacks general mobility compared to other sets, so the speed helps in that aspect and it just helps moving around. Pack is nice because of precision and power it offers, and the fury up time in combat. As far as trinkets go, I usually use a cavalier necklace, and the rest are zerker. For D/D, I often run with two cavalier daggers also, but I use zerker quite often also. For S/D, I usually use zerker weapons as you really need that extra crit chance.
If you’re on a budget, I could really not recommend runes of speed any more. They’re highly underrated imo.
……………………………………..
I’m not entirely sure how to respond to this…….The people on this forum are generally very kind, and there is incredibly less QQ here than on the thief forum for instance. Necro has simply gotten screwed over numerous countless times, so people have a right to be a little upset. Blatantly saying that people here “Need better manners” is simply offensive and makes you look like a fool.
No one is crying and screaming and denouncing ANET for the changes.
Some even thank and applaud the changes.
This is simply false. I have seen numerous other threads throughout the forums complaining about the changes. Those who applaud the changes do so simply because it helped their class. Thieves for instance are happy with the SB change since they no longer waste initiative on an invalid SB 5. I have yet to see one single thread that is overjoyed about a nerf to their class.

Think of how us necromancers feel.
Please do explain to me how it would be overpowered in an actual constructive situation instead of just random non sense.
I have explained how it would be overpowered. Additionally you cannot only factor in pvp when talking about balance.
snip
You’re totally missing my point here. When I mentioned mesmer and engi, I was simply using those as examples. Yes, they’re not the best examples but they were all I could think of in the moment. Furthermore, it is up to you to prove why the trait should be buffed, not up to me to prove why it shouldn’t. Lets give thieves 30k hp and increase their dps by 200% because I feel that they need it ( extreme exaggeration but my point has been made).
see, non of your arguments make actual sense nor realistic
But they do make sense, and they are realistic. The trait is fine as is, and there is no reason to change it.
Why are you using 2v1 as examples? (That’s what you’re doing)
I’m not using 2v1s as an example, I’m using group fights of any and every size as an example.
The trait would be balanced just like necromancers 50% in deathshroud trait is balanced. (Life blast is long casted projectiles) Unsuspecting Foe = CC required.
Those are also 4 points that you cannot put somewhere else.
But death perception is a Grandmaster trait. Then again, that’s points you can’t put somewhere else.
Nobody here is saying that this stuff never happen to us. In fact, part of the L2P is actually experiencing this and learning from it instead of complaining in the forum trying to rally everyone else for all the wrong reasons.
Not what I was trying to say sorry. That’s exactly what I’m trying to tell him, just in a friendly manner.
I personally dislike the term l2p as it only causes more trouble than its worth.
Tempest- all people here are saying is that it is not the class’s fault per se that you got killed by a warrior. Thieves kill warriors all the time, and vise versa. If played well, a thief can destroy a warrior, but the same goes for a warrior. You cannot use one situation as the grounds for increasing a class’s overall damage. You got killed by a killshot in most likely a large area with a bunch of stuff going on. There’s no way anyone could pay attention to every single little detail in a fight- so stuff like this happens no matter how great of a player you are. I personally haven’t seen you play so I’m not going to come out and blatantly say you suck, as I have nothing to base that on. This has happened to me before, it has happened to everyone I know before, and I’m willing to bet it’s happened to the even the best thief players (whether they admit it or not). Stuff like this happens, and you have to accept that. Move on, take your anger out on a few moas, and have fun.
use some brain guys…
Please do explain to me how a non-grandmaster trait that would give 50% crit chance for ANY disable is not overpowered. I would love to see why.
It would apply to ANY disable. There’s a mesmer dazing you a lot? Oh, well that warrior over here gets 50% more crit chance. Engi pulling you all over the place? Well sorry but that warrior gets 50% more crit chance too. The list goes on and on.
You cannot just consider warrior by itself.
And you cannot use sigil of intelligence as the reasoning behind buffing a trait that is already fine. It is for three attacks after weapon swapping every nine seconds. This would give you 50% crit chance for any disable, which means in a group 50% crit the vast majority of the time. Big difference there.
Lmao…
Ya. Warrior taking something like bulls charge >another utility like zerker stance or endure pain or a mace instead of an axe or bow OP.
Not even rampage would be overpowered since there is actually counterplay in the fact that you’d need to be disabled for the trait to work.
I am not talking about taking bull’s charge, so please refrain from Laughing your kitten off. It would be way too strong because it would apply to way too many things. Imagine a warrior roaming with this trait with any other class. Guaranteed +50% crit chance in all practicality. Having it only apply to stuns limits its applications and making it balanced as it’s much more difficult to get a stun compared to anything that disables. There’d be little to no counter play in gaining a 50% crit chance on any disabled person. The trait is already fine. Tons of people pair it with Mace/sh GS and do very well. There’s no need for the buff to begin with.
Besides, it’d just give people something to complain about.
No. Just no.
It’d be way too strong.
From the sound of it, it seems like you were in a group fight when this happened. The warrior in question is obviously running a zerker rifle build which, while not bad per se in a 1v1, excels in group fights. Since as you say, you can’t pay attention to everything that’s going on. With all that in mind, it’s not your fault, or the thief profession as a whole’s fault. It’s simply what rifle warrior is meant to do. I’m sure if it were in a 1v1, you would easily crush the warrior, since you CAN dodge it, or even blind his brains out. I personally play zerker warrior, and as others have said here, it gets eaten alive my quite a few things. So it’s most certainly not easy mode, and takes a different style of play imo. The reason a rifle warrior can hit that much is that killshot takes 1.25s to actually go off, whereas a backstab goes off instantly for all intensive purposes. Backstab has counterplay in that anyone with brains can help mitigate the burst, if not avoid it altogether. Killshot has counterplay in that, in the 1.25s cast time. you can prepare to dodge (I generally just think “one” and and timing comes out fine), or put a blind on them. Also keep in mind that while killshot does hit for more than backstab, it can be used much less often. You could also delve into the topic of potential. I would argue that in a fight with two players of the same high skill level, a thief would kill a warrior every time. The skill cap for thieves is much higher than that of warrior- but this doesn’t mean it’s “better” than warrior. I play warrior because I enjoy it more, not because it’s “easy-mode.”
tl:dr
Every build has its own niche.
Rifle warrior excels at sp00king the living daylights out of poor souls in group fights, but is incredibly lacking in the 1v1 department (relatively speaking).
Thief is very very good at 1v1s, and smaller fights in which they can take down targets quickly.
This is not a l2p issue in my opinion, it’s simply how the game functions.
edit:
I see that you have said that warrior takes no skill. Blanket statements like this really bug me. Here’s the thing. Warrior has high regen because it is essentially the only way for them to mitigate damage. Thieves/mesmers have stealth. Mesmers have clones. Rangers have pets (whether that’s good or bad is debatable) and access to regen, guardians have meditations, aegis, and tons of boons, eles/engis have a lot of boons. Another key difference with warrior compared to other classes is that since we use healign signet, we have no burst heal. Once our hp gets low, we cannot burst it back up to 10k or so, which is fine imo. This is why we kite around and regen- it’s how our class works. Zerker warriors are also NOT tanky. With thick skin off, my warrior is at around 2.55kish armor, which while higher than a zerker thief’s, is made up for in the fact that thieves have stealth. I have extensively played thief and warrior; I enjoy both. Neither are op. The counterplay is there- exploit it.

I love greats word, which is why I roam with it. I don’t really use it at all in pvp unless I want to have some fun with frenzy + bull’s charge, but it is more certainly viable, if not necessary, for WvW! But yes. RIP the days of GS shenanigans in pvp!
SWORDS NOT WORDS
I can in fact English I will have you know.

It really depends what kind of ele we’re talking about here. If an ele is bursting you that much, I’m guessing they’re fresh air S/F or S/D. The key to fighting an ele is knowing when to put pressure and when to be a little more careful. After they’ve attuned to water, you want to apply the chill you get from stealing to them as this will really mess them up. Just takes practice, and lots of it!
Misleading title is misleading.
That was the intent! Click-bait!
Ranger is fun to play! I’m actually quite excited to start leveling mine.
Nice video! It’s really nice to see a video showcasing the drastic difference between a good LB ranger and a not so good one! On a side note, would you mind linking your build?
this one is the most fun for me!
That’s all that matters!
I generally try and get one good burst in them before they pop signet of stone, and then I back off a little. Most usually combo signet of stone with LB 5, which actually hurts like hell, so do be mindful of it. Nonetheless, I usually just CnD off the pet until the signet wears off, then I go in for the kill. If they knock you back, you need to infiltrator’s singet + CnD ASAP. Also, if you see them switch to GS be extremely careful as that GS 2 hits like a truck. If they’re using entangle, break that root right away otherwise you’ll be caught in a very very bad spot. Because of entangle alone, I highly recommend running withdraw, as it’ll essentially negate the elite. I think another major thing is realizing when a LB ranger knows what they’re doing. If you can tell that a LB ranger is on the dumber side, just wipe them out (they generally stand still with their LB out). However, if you see that they’re actively using their GS when they should be rather than just Pew Pew’ing with the LB out, be more cautious. D/P is very effective against them due to the blinds and interrupt on the 4 skill, so I suggest possibly having d/p equipped as your secondary set.
Yeah, DOG is an SBI guild so my guess is this was an actual screenshot. How they got the time to set up that much siege in NN camp I have no idea… wasn’t there anymore when I was running around an hour or so back though. (Probably because YB is doing regular rinse cycles on most of the maps.)
It is a real screenshot I assure you. I wasn’t there when they set it up by I happened to go to the North camp and couldn’t believe my eyes.
We have lives……. I think…….
Yeah there’s nothing quite like a bull’s charge + frenzy + HB. People don’t expect it either which makes it even funnier
I’m sorry to hear you say that. I’m assuming you’re talking about pvp, in which case your assessment is fairly accurate. Pretty much all the effective pvp builds use a longbow, but they still involve plenty of melee fighting. I prefer using my warrior in WvW, as it is in my opinion much more fun. And if you’re not liking the meta shoutbow (or one of its many variants), you can always play traditional zerker warrior. You’ll die hella fast, but so will they. There’s also always condition warrior, which generally is S/S LB, but it involves quite a lot more “hack and slash” as you put it. You have to find what you enjoy. That is after all the whole point of the game- enjoying yourself.
It would definitely be entertaining. A big part of its success may rely on the fact that you’re going to confuse the heck out of people. Although you might opt for a little more crit damage. Other than that it certainly seems worth a try!
Some awesome fights man, great job! That intro made me laugh too gotta say
Just remember, if you’re ever in a hotjoin and the other team has 3+ turret engis, reddit is always waiting for you.
Or Tumblr. :P
Yes, and if for some reason you can’t get on either of those, there’s always 4Chan……….
Just remember, if you’re ever in a hotjoin and the other team has 3+ turret engis, reddit is always waiting for you.
This build is actually hilariously fun. You simply do so much damage from range and up close that most people freak out and end up dying really easily. I’ve always loved how killshot follows people into stealth, although there have been a few thieves that I felt bad for at the time. Those 10k-12k Killshots really spook people. I do have problems with mesmers with it however, but I find that if I spook em enough they’ll mess up. Great video Vaans!
Depends on what class you are. My advice against a D/P thief is too knock them out of their BP. If you’re a necro, fear them after they put BP down, or if you’re a warrior knock em out of it with Hammer 4. If you’re a necro, save staff 5 for when they SR for an easy kill, but other than that I can’t really say more until you say what class you play. Just keep in mind that D/P is predictable. If they back off for a split second, chances are they’re going to BP and Hs to you. If this happens, don’t panic. As you most likely know, keep moving around to make an actual BS harder. When they come out of stealth, get ready to CC em right away.
what do you think about something like that?
I mean.. It’ll work but I feel like your crit damage is a tad low.
There’s several ways you can go.
If you go 0/4/4/0/6 with Forceful GS you can go Bull’s Charge + 100b to gain might then swap to Axe with a sigil of intel for a strong combo.
The 0/0/6/2/6 gives you Defy Pain for extra sustain (if you’re running -condi duration food and boons you can ditch Zerker Stance in all of these builds) and Leg specialist which is REALLY useful for setting up Evis or Bull’s Charge.
6/0/4/0/4 gets you more DPS while sacrificing sustain. Axe Mastery can be swapped for Slashing Power.
As for general tactics, your big two are of course Bull’s Charge + 100b and Shield Bash + Evis. Woth Option 2 you can do mini combos like Bladetrail at close range to immob followed by 100b, though this is much weaker than it used to be (before Leg Spec got a icd you could immob them again when the blade came back).
Other than that, the build is about using your attacks wisely. Save Rush until they start to try and put distance between you. Use Whirlwind attack when they are backing away from you or you have no other way to avoid a incoming big attack. Axe has always been a straight forward “use your AA” weapon while stacking up vuln. Don’t just throw out Evis, wait until after they dodge or you have a setup like the immob or Shield Bash. Sometimes you’ll get lucky but the leap isn’t as helpful as you would think.
Thanks for all the info. I think my biggest issue is that I’m not smart with my evis, but I just roamed for a bit and was a lot more smart with my evis and I did a lot better.
I was wondering if anyone has any tips for roaming with Axe/Sh gs. I normally use Gs Hammer, but I like axe a lot too. However, every time I try and use it I generally do worse than with Hammer. I probably need to get more used to the set, but any advice is welcome!
While it can be proven that warrior is by the number inferior to other classes, this is after all a game, so I play warrior simply because I enjoy it. For one, I like the look of warriors in general, and secondly it’s just enjoyable for me. I admit that I love whackign things with a huge hammer, and for the majority of my fights while roaming I do very well.
Tldr;
If you enjoy warrior, play it. It’s as simple as that.
Yes.
You see that moa over there? Oh wait, you can’t cause you’re dead……
My opinions on stealth are most certainly mixed. On one hand, I play a D/D thief so I understand what it’s like from a thief’s perspective and how we rely upon it (depending on the build of course), but at the same time, I play other classes too so I also understand how irritating it is for them. I understand how to think like a thief and I’m able to expect what they do, so on one hand it’s fine since it’s beyond predictable, but on the other hand it allows a thief to play the fight their way. All in all, I think stealth is perfectly fine. If I get killed by a thief, I accept the fact that I got outplayed and move on.
I think we also need to think about how difficult it is to balance the thief class. Thief is harder to balance simply because of the way it works: initiative. Initiative is kind of a double edged blade in that it allows for spamming, but at the same time that spamming leaves the thief vulnerable. It requires generally more management than CDs on other classes. Now at the same time, if you increase the initiative cost of a skill by even 1, you risk completely throwing any existing balance out of whack. For me as a thief at least, what this initiative means is that if I am going to be squishy what-so-ever I essentially need stealth since it is not only my only unique defense as a class, but it also allows me to have a rotation if you will and be able to do damage and not get killed. I guess what I’m saying is that if we’re going to talk about balancing thief anymore I really think we really need to evaluate the thief class as a WHOLE- all of its mechanics and playing styles included.
I pretty much only WvW so here’s my two cents.
D/D:
I personally like this set the most, but it is imo the hardest to use and can be easily countered by other builds. It has the most burst, but is very reliant on landing your CnDs. High risk – High reward for sure.
D/P:
This set has been toned down some, but is still viable. It is in general more reliable than D/D as it has on-demand stealth versus on hit (HS in your BP), but this stealthing also takes more initiative. You can generally be a little more bursty with D/P as fara s your gear goes since you have a lot of blinds, so the set still has a lot of DPS. You really mess up warriors, and D/D thieves.
S/D:
This set is interesting. I like it sometimes because you can play it w/o being dependent on stealth as you have a lot of evades and mobility in general. Generally provides a steady but very high dps, but is incedibly squishy as full zerker is generally what you wear since you need that higher crit chance.
As far as offhand goes, you generally want Shortbow, but you of course don’t have to. I personally use P/D offhand at times because I prefer it with D/D. Really Just play around and find what you enjoy. I’ve killed people with D/D before only to have them say I suck because “D/D burst isn’t even meta.” I enjoy though so I play it. Simple as that.
I dunno. I feel like any kind of cc on its skills would be hard to balance simply due to the initiative mechanic, so I’d personally expect mostly dps with vulnerability or so.
I’d really like it to be spear tbh. Especially if they give it a longer range than other weapons, since it is a spear after all………
