Concider getting rid of WvW

So far I’ve seen zero (0) people, except the OP, supporting the idea that the fix to WvW population imbalances is to remove WvW and throw everyone into Open-World PvP in the PvE zones.

Vieux, I know you love your idea, and you think that people agree with you, but it’s just not true. I’m not sure if English is your first language or not, but people aren’t saying what you think they say.

If you can find some direct quotes of people wanting to implement your idea (your whole idea, not just the notion that open PvP “could be fun”), go for it. Right now, at least to me, you keep saying you have the support of many while I see nothing at all.

So, let me get this straight — you are proposing that the fix for WvW is to get rid of it and send all those players (who barely fill up those maps, if at all) to the PvE maps (which are much larger, so 0% chance of filling them with WvW players)? That people who are normally there (the PvE’ers) can just opt-out of the PvP if they don’t want to participate? (which will be all of the PvE’ers, as who actually wants to be ganked?…)

And you want to do this because other successful games, like WoW, have open-world PvP? And you think those games are so successful because of their open-world PvP? And that GW2 will benefit from those systems even though at its basic structure it’s so very different?

Well then, my answer to this whole thing — Wrong. Please Try Again.

Hammer #2 damage

Rabbitstew.2756

It’s definitely possible…. IF you’re a full glass spec hitting a full glass spec target with the last explosion on Hammer #2.

Funnily enough, there are other skills in the game that can do this kind of damage in this scenario, and they’re much harder to avoid/counter.

Please fix stealth before nerfing it.

Rabbitstew.2756

Bad players use stealth as a crutch, playing like that one defense should counter every offense. They don’t utilize the many other defenses of their class, of which there are plenty. These people tend to spam stealth skills, and cry loudly when it doesn’t win the fight for them.

Good players use stealth when the right opportunity presents itself, knowing that stealth isn’t infallible and has counters. These people are experts in utilizing all the defenses given from their class, and if forced to, they can win fights using little to no stealth at all.

I think I see which category the OP falls into.

Guess what thief has to use all his initative(and wait 2 more secs) to use Infiltrator’s arrow 3 times(2700 range). There is nothing to swap in order to regain initiative. Thief has high mobility at the cost of being weak in even numbered fights.
While revenant is a stronger fighter with much better mobility. He can use phase traversal 2 times and he is already in range for Unrelenting Assault(45 energy only). Phase Traversal requiring a target is a big weakness but also a strength: It bypasses line of sight limitations and in WvW you can always outrun anyone using the NPCs and Walls as targets. It can roam better in SPvP than a thief if there is a target at a point and immediately deal damage and get unblockable bonuses with their teleports.

I’m not asking to remove this skill or something. I’m only asking to give it like 5s of cooldown ONLY if the target was out of range as I honestly think it should be.

Standard mobility of the Revenant is already pretty bad, I’d be wary of lowering it even more. When I played without Shiro (like how many Revs will be), I felt pretty slow in combat, which meant death in many situations.

Also, talking about Thief, it has plenty of stealth on top of their teleports, which is a hard counter to phase traversal when attempting to run away. Pop stealth and LOS the Rev so they can’t target you… job done. Funnily enough, it’s also a hard counter to Rev sword #3. Stealth will be very powerful vs some Revenants it seems.

(P.S. — 2 phase traversals + 1 unrelenting assault is a total of 55 energy.)

Conditions and stealth, it's ruining the game

in WvW

Rabbitstew.2756

Yeap. Stealth + Condition builds are top-tier in the roaming WvW scene. If they were good anywhere else, then we’d have a problem. In numbers 5+, thieves are useless and mesmers are mere portal/veil bots. Until that gets fixed, let ’em shine in the roaming scene.

Also, on your “duel” with a staff ele, how exactly did you win? The staff ele could just sit at 1200 range and you couldn’t hit him/her at all. Plus standing still vs a staff ele would result in a quick death with all their heavy-hitting AoE, no matter how tanky your stats are.

I’m all for bringing up valid “proof”, but either you made this up or that elementalist is the worst of the worst.

I almost one shot my self with 7 stacks of confusion with UA one time. Didn’t feel like I could do much since condi cleanse access mia

Isn’t also just as easy to cancel-cast by stowing your weapon(s) as per standard competitive practice in this particular game?

Not all skills can be cancel-cast by stowing your weapon. Why this is, I have no idea. I hope UA is one of them.

Rabbitstew.2756

If kept the same, is this a new counter for UA? No, not really. Not all classes have access to confusion, and even if they do, they may not have much of it or be built for condition damage.

Not all skills in the game have counters. Should those be fixed too?

Never did I say that all skills should have counters. I just pointed out that confusion isn’t really a counter for UA.

Do I think UA needs (more) counters? Probably. High damage, teleporting, might-stacking, 2-3 second evade on a 10 second cooldown (without adding benefits from traits or other skill synergy) is quite strong in my opinion. Though, I haven’t had the chance to test it personally yet, so I’m withholding my final judgment until then.

When is it right to interrupt a duel?

Do I interrupt obvious duels? Nope.

As a roamer/scout myself, I’ve had some of my favorite GW2 moments in duels, and so I don’t want to rob someone of a chance at that. And for what? A near-worthless loot bag and some pointless WvW exp? No thanks.

Maybe I’m just a nice person? Dunno. Got most of my “honor-code” from my DAOC days, so that might be part of it.

in Revenant

Posted by: Rabbitstew.2756

Rabbitstew.2756

For those who don’t know how GW2 works, the confusion condition ticks once when you activate a skill, whether that skill makes multiple attacks or not. ONCE.

As for Unrelenting Assault tick’ing 7 instances of skill-activating confusion damage, I think it’s a bug. Why? Because no other skill in the game works this way. They’d make a special note of this in the UA description if this was an intended mechanic.

If kept the same, is this a new counter for UA? No, not really. Not all classes have access to confusion, and even if they do, they may not have much of it or be built for condition damage.

Rangers aren’t aimed at melee, so why does it have a weapon that is highly used in melee damage specific professions?

facepalm

Professions in GW2 are not split into ranged or melee categories. They all have the option and can do quite well with either method, sometimes both at the same time.

As for rangers specifically, I’ve seen and played both great melee and ranged specs.

Edit: is this question more aimed at the misconception that Rangers are only supposed to be using ranged weapons? If so, look again at the origins of the word and please try again.

Not to come off as mean, but a simple Google search for “gw2 ranger stealth build” will give you the explanation behind their high stealth uptime. Another search for “gw2 revealed” will bring you a list of skills that apply reveal, one being Sick ‘Em, which is a very situational skill that’s nearly useless against every class except a stealth-focused Thief or Mesmer, where it becomes much more useful.

To me, there’s nothing wrong with stealth rangers or the Sick ’Em skill… just gotta know how to counter them, like every other class/build. Encounters with/against new skills can be scary at first, but a little research and practice will help you adjust.

Marriage

While marriage is an alright idea, I don’t think more than a little merchant that sells some wedding-related items is going to happen. Marriage rituals probably differ substantially depending on your character’s race/culture, so having just a simple wedding ring wouldn’t cut it lore-wise.

Oh and for the mechanical advantages of being married, don’t make me laugh. That’s probably the worst idea I’ve heard in a long time. People would ruin the idea of marriage because it’d be stupid to NOT be married, simply from gaining those benefits. Trading account-bound items? A splendid way to break the game’s trading system for sure.

[Suggestion:] Race Concept - The Nierr

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rabbitstew.2756

Rabbitstew.2756

Like many have said, I like the enthusiasm and work put into this suggestion, but that’s where it mainly ends.

As others have already talked about most of my own gripes, I’ll throw this one out there – Telepathy. Get rid of it. Scrap it. All of it.

There’s a reason that you don’t see PCs in MMOs (or games in general) with the ability to read minds at will, and it’s a valid one. Having telepathy (one of the top most overpowered abilities one can imagine) being innate in a race just makes certain situations trivial. I know GW2 is mostly about hack’n’slash gameplay-wise, but think of how life in Tyria would be realistically with mind-readers: zero deception possible, so betrayals are seen miles ahead of time while criminals/soon-to-be-criminals are discovered immediately with a simple question.

Cat-girl/boy: “Sir, have you been involved in any illegal activities?”
Man: “No, I haven’t” (mind says: Well there -was- that time I got away with selling some human slaves to the centaurs…)
Cat-girl/boy: “AHA!!! You’re under arrest, criminal scum!”
Man: “What?!?! What are you talking about?!”
Cat-girl/boy: “You sold off human slaves to centaurs, you evil man!”
Man: “You have no evidence of such a thing!”
Cat-girl/boy: “Sure I do! I easily read your evil mind! Now we go to find others of my race who will confirm my readings to prove that I myself am not lying.”
Man: “Well… huh… this blows.”

Do you now see how these situations will go? And this could extend into even more areas, like reading an enemy’s mind mid-battle to know their next attack so that you couldn’t lose. Or even reading an enemy commander’s thoughts to know their next move in a war. Possibly reading the mind of a beautiful spacefaring princess to find the location of a hidden rebel base.

What I’m getting at here is that a new race, with such a powerful ability that certainly trumps every other race’s abilities, will never make it past the drawing board.

Implementing 1v1 dueling resource-heavy?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rabbitstew.2756

Rabbitstew.2756

As a programmer myself, I’d like to think that I have a bit more insight into this kind of question than the general population, so here’s my input:

Answer:
No, it wouldn’t be too work-intensive or difficult to add Open World Duels. This isn’t why it hasn’t been added, though.

Explanation:
The majority of code for a dueling system is already in the game. (See dueling NPC hearts/events, Costume Brawl, Keg Brawl, Crab Toss, etc..) Most professionally written code is created in modules, or blocks, which can be easily inserted, replaced, revised, or copied to ensure organization and efficiency. I assume here that Anet writes their gaming code in a similar fashion. To add dueling would be a process similar to “Copy and Paste” the code block for some already in-game activity like Costume Brawl, revise/add some code (the amount would largely depend on how/when/where they’d want the system to work), and then implement/integrate this revised block of code into the game.

My Thoughts:
Now, the real reason Open World Dueling hasn’t been implemented, in my opinion, is that Anet has other, more important subjects to address that affects much more of the population base than a dueling system implementation would. They are a business after all, and appeasing the most players within their limited work schedule is their primary goal, as profit margins are everything.

Whether Open World Dueling should be added to GW2 is a whole different debate, as you have said.

Unsalvageable Equipment, needs changes!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rabbitstew.2756

Rabbitstew.2756

So I’ve asked about this to others in the past but I’ll post it here in the hope that I’ll get a response from A-net:

Why am I not able to salvage certain armor/weapons/trinkets?

My main issue is that I have bought unsalvageable equipment, like those from lvl 80 Orr Karma vendors and WvW badge vendors, and now cannot salvage them in order to get my precious upgrades out of them. NOWHERE IN-GAME was it stated that these items couldn’t be salvaged like the many other pieces of equipment I pick up during my adventures. No note, no hint, no special tag, not anything. I have bought entire sets of said equipment, decked them out in expensive upgrades, and now that I want to change builds I have to either discard the upgrades or buy an Upgrade Extractor (this option is laughable, as the cost of these 1-use items are completely ridiculous, being 3-5x the cost of the upgrade itself).

Some people say that salvaging Exotics purchased with mainly Karma or WvW Badges will crash the economy with their salvaged components, and I agree. People have tons of excess Karma and Badges and would fully exploit exotic gear salvaging for Ectos and such.

I just want the upgrades that I invested into these deceitful items back.

My Solution:
Simply make it that when you salvage these special items, you only receive the upgrade(s) that you yourself have inserted. Nothing else will be salvaged.

Permanent Upgrade Extractor

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rabbitstew.2756

Rabbitstew.2756

I agree that currently the Upgrade Extractor isn’t worth it’s cost in gems at all. Some of the runes I put into unsalvageable armor are really expensive, mostly in the 8-12 gold/each range. Even with that high cost, it’s less expensive to just replace that rune and discard the old rune than to spend 2-3x more buying an Upgrade Extractor.

I seriously doubt that A-net thought the cost of this item through enough, as anyone with the simplest of math skills can figure out that the Upgrade Extractor isn’t worth the cost by a large, almost comical margin.

To put it simply, they took a lot of the flavor out of many of the starter zones that made them unique and interesting in order to make it “less confusing”. While I’m not sure how picking up a stack of hay and giving it to a cow could be difficult or mind-blowing, I sure do hope A-net knows what they’re doing.

New players are introduced to these new areas and if they are bland, boring, and monotonous from the very start, they’ll leave and spread the word about how GW2 “is just like every other MMO”.

Please Remove Map Completion from PvP Areas

So wait…. People want World Completion without exploring the whole world?
(I still say PvP should be included but I can see why they’ve excluded it too…)
People want a “Legendary” weapon to become even less legendary by further decreasing the requirements to make one? It already requires nothing but a pathetic timesink instead of mastering game/profession mechanics and skills.

Well, since we’re in the discussion of decreasing requirements to attain a “Legendary” weapon, I vote that we should receive one Legendary of our choice upon completion of every Daily Achievement.

The normal requirements in place are boring and do not cater to my every whim. “Having to do so just is not fun. I play the game to have fun, not because I want a second job for which I do not get paid. I know there are many other players that feel the same way I do.”

OP, this thread is going to go nowhere (as in Anet won’t change anything) and here is why: If they do remove Food completely, then they’d have to also remove other “power creep” features too. Things like Ascended equipment , ALL World Rank abilities, Bloodlust buffs, Boosters, etc.

Why? Because people could make the same exact argument against those features too, as they all add to the power of your character the same exact way Food does. To remove one, claiming it’s to prevent power creep, and to keep the others is hypocritical.

All or Nothing — those are the real options.

Besides, if we’re going to get rid of food in WvW, I vote to get rid of Ascended/Legendary equipment — it gives power creep and it takes forever to get. Pay2Win. Wait… thinking about it now, I say no to Exotics! Those cost money and have too many stat points! And how about those Rares and Masterworks! … See where I’m going with this?

Yes, I see your argument, but it is flawed: The game is balanced around a game mode with exotic stats without food. Any deviation from that breaks the balance.

Umm… where was it stated that current WvW was balanced with exotic equipment in mind without food? Link Please. You hinting at PvP? WvW is much more similar to PvE to be honest — and in PvE, you can use food, therefore WvW should have food. Both should (and probably are) be balanced around having food buffs.

Also, to put this out there: Cooking (the tradeskill) should not be made even more useless than it already is… it’s quite sad even in its current state. And food buffs add build variety, just as different sets of stats on armor/weapons/runes/sigils gives more build variety. Those who disagree really need to look again at the definition of variety . Some foods are blatantly better than others, yes, and should either be bumped down or the others bumped up.

No Foods In WvW

Rabbitstew.2756

Errrr… No. Why? Because I feel like WvW should be all or nothing stat-wise. It’s supposed to be unbalanced, that’s part of the fun. PvP is where everything is strictly controlled and “balanced”.

Pshh, too good and contributes to power creep too. Get rid of them. AND those trait things? They add stat points also, so those should be denied because… power creep and balance, yeah! AND those other [insert aspect that adds stat points], etc. etc. etc.

See where I’m going with this? Keep food in WvW, and balancing the foods themselves should be your priority.

Rabbitstew.2756

Fortus, you’re likely going to get a lot of flamming with a post like this. I tried to make a /duel post back in Beta and got a rather mixed response.

As for me, I’m all for it. To think that a simple /duel creates a whole system of elitism is a horrible assumption, but people look at it that way anyway. Others will say that since WoW has it, it’s a horrible feature and should never be added because GW2 is “different”. (Hrmm… WoW has health bars… then GW2 shouldn’t have health bars?)

But yeah I’d really like to see /duel. There must be some considerations though, like the option to automatically decline duel requests to avoid spammers/trolls. Even a certain area on the map that is designated as a “duel zone” so the PvE people can’t complain about it.

And to be perfectly honest, /duel makes sense in the GW2 setting and times. People on the same side would play fight (called training) against each other all the time to prepare for their real enemies in the field.

Mass Rally/Repetitive Rally

Rabbitstew.2756

Anyone else fed up with these mechanics in WvW? To be more specific:

-Situation: Huge fight at a supply camp, you are defending — The enemy force are beating on the camp guards as you prepare your group’s next move. A mass rush of your group against the enemy sends them into disarray, allowing you to down around 3-5 of them quickly. Commense 4 hour “finish them” animation. And….. nothing, because each one of them rallied due to a guard death, a guard that they barely even noticed and must have “tagged” sometime during the fight. ~Restart fight

-Situation: A good 1v1 fight —A random few mobs get aggro’ed into the fight and get hit a bunch, usually just about killing them. Someone goes down, but jumps up again as a condition or downed state attacks just barely knock off a creature, making them rally… ~Restart fight. Again they go down, quicker this time because they were low hp, but another mob dies, bringing the downed player back up. Rinse and repeat for the number of mobs, which can be quite a few. One time I had to “restart” a fight four times against one person because of the kitten coyotes and their weak coyote spawn friends constantly dieing.

Anyone else seeing the problems here? These situations kinda ruin the experience if you’re on the bad end of the stick.

Just some thoughts I’ve had in the past:

-Lessen HP of downed state (how much? Idunno, but some. They are dying, not becoming more healthy than when they were up)

-Killing blow animation does % increments of damage to downed players, instead of nothing the whole timer until the end. (25%/sec maybe?)

-Get rid of the ~second of invulnerability and complete removal of conditions when downed. (I have no idea why the invulnerability is thrown in there really. As for the condition removal, that’s complete bull. Condition spec’ed people are at a huge disadvantage here, since they gotta reapply everything to wittle that 40K HP bar. If I stack bleeds on someone and they go down, why in the world are they cauterizing instantly?)

-Underwater downed state is a mess. (Reaching the surface in the downed state grants ~1-2 seconds of invulnerability and removal of all conditions. Anyone ever kill off a downed player bobbing up and down on the surface? Yeah, it’s not pretty…)

I am also fairly certain that I could perma-stun you with pistol whip. I did it to a lot of people in WvW the other night, because WvW is kind of chaotic. I am guessing you do pve and spvp smallball stuff, which is why you think it is hard. Have fun with those zynga games!

Matt,

I have found the vast majority of players in this game does not read or comprehend anything that’s not “I love you Anet”. Seriously you very specifically laid out Pistol whip for your example, and person after person says you have no example of this. You even said you yourself stun locked someone to death. Still they ignore that too. You even told them you have a warrior and a thief yet ppl don’t listen to that either. Sad but true.

Thank you for adding absolutely nothing to the conversation. We’re trying to discuss why one system is in place over another, that’s all. I have no “I love you Anet” deal going on because I’m angry about quite a few things in the game. Dagger Storm elite, while powerful, is not all that awesome as you talk it up to be. During the ~8 seconds of spinning, you move slower, are easily CC’ed (yes, they gain stability, but conditions still work). And they block projectiles, not invulnerable to damage. Melee and AOE still hit them.

Thats just it, if you’re standing in melee range, you get wrecked. If you choose to try to kite them they can’t be damaged and have stability. They can be snared sure, but given average reaction time you will burst someone more than enough with Dagger storm to force defensive cooldowns and heals all while being immune to projectiles. And AoE’s in this game hit like wet noodles and should not be a valid arguement against an obviously AMAZING elite skill. I suggest playing other classes and seeing their crappy elites and then realizing how amazing your elites are and actually feel like elites, not just another skill to use.

I’m just pointing out the misunderstanding around Daggerstorm. You can dish out damage, yes, but you aren’t an invulnerable god while you’re doing it. There are ways to counter it. That said, I love the skill to death and it’s nearly always on my bar.

Of all the classes, why is the thief the least mobile?

I seriously thought this was a troll thread at first… thief as the slowest, made me crack up. I can out-dodge/maneuver anyone I know (Specialized as a dodge thief).

As for long-distance run, it’s no contest. Equipment dagger, 25% move signet, swift on dodge, roll heal, ini regen traits, then spam Heartseeker. I have never been caught by another class in a long chase… been playing WvW as an 80 thief for about 2 weeks now.

HS definitely needs an increase in initiative cost. Right now thieves have the best elites (hi 8k damage while invuln to damage and unable to be cc’d, or thieves guild that can take someone from full to half health practically instantly) the best mobility and survivability due to said mobility. Anet didn’t want a perma stealth, but the way it is now stealth also lasts too long for the small initiative costs (due to gaining initiative back when stealthed) CnD definitely does not need a reduction. It needs an increase. Thieves have the highest damage potential with scaling damage attacks, great cc, great gap closers, the best get aways, IMO the best elite skills. As I see it thieves need a rebalancing so that a good thief is a good thief, not just someone who can spam 2 skills and be successful. There is a reason why just about every tourney team has a thief or 2 on it, they offer more than other classes. Thieves should have to choose with their initiative costs either high burst or high survivability. Not be able to have both.

I merely pointed out the most flagrant example. Also, pistol whip is a stun, not a daze, and I am pretty sure it is two seconds, not one. You may be thinking of headshot, which is a one second daze.

I am also fairly certain that I could perma-stun you with pistol whip. I did it to a lot of people in WvW the other night, because WvW is kind of chaotic. I am guessing you do pve and spvp smallball stuff, which is why you think it is hard. Have fun with those zynga games!

While this conversation is probably going nowhere, I’ll just throw a few more things in here. I play WvW. That’s all I do, because for me, WvW is endgame in GW2. I have a bit of experience with WvW, lvl 80 thief main (no, not a glass-cannon or HS/PW spammer). The ONLY time I’ve seen someone killed solely by CC spam by one person is when that player is new to the whole PvP deal. When they log some hours and get used to the system and professions, they’ll adapt and stop eating dirt.

I regularly end fights (1v1, 1v2) with 80%+ HP. Do I say my class/build is OP? No, I played inexperienced or non-80 people. There are very few “pro” players yet, the game is still young.

Nope. CC in this game is much, MUCH shorter, not just “a little shorter”. Roots/Mezz in DAOC lasted from 30 seconds at low level to 1+ minutes at cap, with very few CC breakers. DAOC stuns lasted about 9 or 10 seconds at cap. There is a huge difference. I think it’s fine as it is here in GW2. I’ve yet to be killed by somebody spamming CC and DD’ing me down. (Maybe because I’ve invested into some vitality and survival skills?)

Plus, for the whole Pistol Whip thief glass cannon spec, the stun doesn’t last the entire attack, so dodge roll outa that sucker if you don’t have a stun breaker up.

Death Blossom is awesome… my condition/bleed thief’s main ability.

Mine bleeds people for ~21 seconds per stack (originally 10 sec)…. each DB gives 3 stacks. Can easily do 3 DB in a row, without using initiative regen skills. (Total of 9, 21 second bleeds)

The bleeds add up and can be reapplied quickly (if removed).

I dont use Steal

Steal is crazy in WvW or sPvP… this is what Steal does for me (lvl 80) :

-45 sec cooldown
-900 range shadowstep
-Damage (1-2k)
-Poison (10 sec)
-Weakness (3 sec)
-Gain 3 initiative
-Gives Vigor to all you/allies (15 sec)
-Rips 2 boons from target and gives them to you/allies

AND THEN
-Gives you item based on target’s profession, which could be:
-all buffs (mesmer)
-stun (guardian)
-aoe fear (necro)
-stealth/blind (thief)
-aoe axe spin (warrior)
-aoe healing tree/condition removal (ranger)
-long chill (elementalist)
-aoe condition field (engineer)

…. that’s a lot for 1 skill imho… and I’m not even completely spec’ed for a better Steal, I’m a condition/power dodge thief. So for those that think it’s not useful/underpowered… look again.

Issue I have with Thieves is their ability to dodge 4 times in a row, then activate their sword-spin that makes
them dodge everything as well. 5 seconds immunity, I can buy that. 10 seconds, a little bull, but skill would
allow it to happen. 20 seconds of no damage is a game killer.

I know thieves are week when you FINALLY get to hit them, but that 20 sec thing has to go. Glass cannons
shouldn’t be able to be damage immune as well.

Immobilize/any other CC and that dodge-thief is dead. I say that from personal experience as a lvl 80 dodge-thief. And also, if they have that much mobility, they are sacrificing quite a bit in other areas for it. (Bring 2 CC skills to really mess up their day)
