Ranger or Thief?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Rayden.3695

Rayden.3695

Well, since there is only one truly viable build for thief per gamemode, and 2-4 for ranger/druid on that part the choice is pretty clear. Both are good in all gamemodes and neither are braindead, especially in pvp thief has significantly higher skillcap than druid(yes only druid here since base ranger is kinda meh in pvp).

Also notable that in “endgame”(t4 fracs, raids) scenarios thiefs are not that wanted, this is especially true for raids. And druid is most of the time expected to be a support toon sporting full magi gear to pump out kittened amounts of healing(this is not my opinion nor do I conform to it)

So here we come to a crossroads: Do you want to be a support or not? If yes, ranger. If no, thief.

Need Help please.

Depends on what you play, no single class can really be described as “OP” anymore, tho thieves are hella strong in PvP.

D/D thief has some niche places they are used but in general everone runs staff nowadays because dps on single target is the same but it has superior cleave and the dps is easier to acquire. Edit: staff for PvE, D/P for evetrything else.

Guards have loads of dps and are wanted in literally every game mode across the board.

Rev just doesn’t hold up anymore because nerfbat hit it pretty hard a couple of times. It’s bad in PvE, relatively weak in PvP, then again I hear it’s still useful in WvW

Continue playing my Ranger or Guardian?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Rayden.3695

Rayden.3695

since you’re gonna do fracs either will do but easier to get AR on the guardian since it already has ascended armor and trinkets are ridiculously easy to get. The only bump there is that getting a spot in a party is so much easier on a druid than guard(alltho lackluster healing on a zerk druid makes is a bad choice with most pugs)

The missing hero points can be acquired relatively easily by joining a hero point tour, or doing them with a friend or something. To that point hit me up with a whisper if you’re on EU servers and we’ll get ’em for ya nice and easy

Making a legendary weapon

Not that I’d recommend throwing RL money at making one, but the hardest to get bits really do depend on the legendary that you’ll be making.

Making a legendary weapon

Rayden.3695

You can start by checking the wiki, or www.gw2effiecency.com, as to what you will actually need to make one. After that there is a few different approaches you can take

1. Start farming the required mats, don’t worry about the prec, once you have everything craft the required gifts and then either buy a prec from TP, Mystic forge one, or do The precursor crafting collection.

2. Farm gold like mad, throw money at it until you have what you need, proceed to craft.

3. Do a Mix of the 2 and farm somewhere that gives mats that you need, and stuff you don’t need(SW for me), sell everything you do not need and at some point you will have a nice equilibrium of stuff to complete the legendary by crafting what you can, and buying the mats for the rest with the excess gold you’ve amassed

heard that picking up the mistlock instability even tho it refreshes the duration of your pots it doesnt give you the stat boosts that you would get if you clicked the potions yourself not sure tho if its true

Should work with the separate infinite pots, but there seems to be some buggyness with the omnipotion, so to be safe I just click it again after using mistlocks.

Also: I want a refund on my now useless 2 infinite defensive, mobility and offensive pots

Hate to be an kitten but don’t be one of the ppl that link high LI without actually having them. You can either find a group that has no interest in LI’s or one that you can get into with what you have.

Also consider that you can always try whispering the commander about the situation, I think you’ll find most ppl are reasonable and will let you at least try(and boot you if you suck but hey a chance is a chance) even if you lack the LIs that they require.

Best of luck

Ps. Only saying this because unhealthy behaviour such as linking stuff you do not have creates a situation where no one can relax while pugging raids because “one mistake = kick” – mentality is becoming a thing because of people who link lots but know nothing.

Getting back into the game

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Rayden.3695

Rayden.3695

Well, endgame wise the scales for necro and rev are a bit tipped like this:

WvW: Both wanted
PvP: Both good
PvE: Rev is mostly considered useless(not counting open world because anything goes there)

Builds-wise you can run power or condi on necro comfortably and power on rev. Do note that you will get a load of hate if you play power reaper instead of the viper condi build.

So to summarize(pve side because spvp &wvw everything goes): Choose a Rev and you’ll feel unwanted, atleast until Anet deems it appropriate to fix the class. Choose a Necro and be forced to run relatively boring(imo) condi build and you’ll have an easy time finding groups for stuff like T4 fracs(all that health makes you not die, low skillcap class)

tempest defense at gorseval?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Rayden.3695

Rayden.3695

Generally no, it’s not worth it.

It can be if i suppose if you’re lacking and still doing traditional method of breaking and running to walls, but the general state of raids i’ve seen has more no updraft being done than break method.

You can easily do no updraft without really delaying CC. However to OP: Taking tempest Defense isn’t really worth it in Gorseval, you gain more use from reduced CD on Glyph of storms so take inscription(or whatever the 1 trait on that line is called)

General Weapon-Type DPS

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Rayden.3695

Rayden.3695

1h sword and horn/torch will do more damage then greatsword if you can get used to the horrible auto attack on the sword

1. Offhand Axe is better dps than either torch or Wh
2. Sword AA on ranger is actually pretty good nowadays since they went and fixed the horrible kick animation etc. a while ago.

Now to the OP: Ranger dps, no matter how disappointing it is is largely dependent on well timed weapon swaps to make use of Quick Draw on the most efficient skills. You seem to be comparing your performance to a thief, which I would not recommend since your dps will always seem lackluster in comparison(sidenote: D/D is more or less equivalent dps to staff on a thief if used correctly, aside from the extra cleave from staff).

The question here really does boil down to whether you reeeally want to min/max your dps or just do “a lot” of damage. Since in most open world PvE scenarios you’re honestly better off with the GS since it is more fun to use. Just keep in mind that a big number here and there(Maul) doesn’t make GS a good weapon(2nd sidenote: Best dps on a ranger is currently viper condi afaik). Also, open world PvE mobs are made of pudding so one big swing might be better than a lot of small ones in succession in that case anyways(different story if the thing you’re killing has a few million hp).

So are all weapons equal when it comes to damage? Short answer is no. As far as PvE goes you can comfortably run the highest dps weaponry. When faced up against other players the weapons that have the highest utility value(soft CCs, Evades etc.) are better.

Also if you wish to compare separate weapon dps by yourself(would not recommend btw) you can check the coefficients for the skills from the wiki, factor in cooldowns and whatnot and land on the exact same conclusion for weapons that most ppl run anyways.

Posted by: Rayden.3695

Rayden.3695

Will not give exact specs but there’s acouple of things to take note on:

- There really isnt a machine that will run GW2 at 60fps on full settings all the time, this is mostly because of limitations of the relatively poor game engine GW2 has
- You’ll see better performance from Intel CPU’s in comparison to AMD since they have vastly better single thread performance, this is another kink in the game engine and thus there is not much you can do about that.

Best build for me?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Rayden.3695

Rayden.3695

fractal builds and WvW builds are 2 completely diff things

For fractals you either go Viper’s with Sword/torch & longbow, or Berserker’s with GS & Mace/shield. Both PS with banners one is just condi and one is power

And from what I remember for WvW mix of Marauder/berserker with GS & Hammer is pretty good.

Also note that GS has more than enough mobility so you dont really need the SW/WH combo

mm, very arguable as the price for mid range mats isn’t that diff, also lvl 43-44 toon hits the sweet spot for bag openers. However Tarir Multiloot is still prob the fastest way. Basically you complete Octovine and use the squad to open the big chests on several maps for tons of rares(there are guides and rules for the squads, look them up if you are to do this)

Yeah there is no regular exp anymore in WvW, isntead you get tomes of knowledge from ranking up etc, that way you can level up alts without being an upscaled hinderance.

Basically keep playing and you’ll get your levels, just in a different form. However if you do have a lvl 80 toon, do yourself and everyone else a favor and get the tomes on that toon and use them on the one you want to level.

Rayden.3695

Guess i’m to casual for caring about that. I mean dps only translates to time and skill, the more time an enemy needs to kill the more skill the group needs to stay alive (for most PvE content that is, never played high level fractal or raids so far)
And it doesn’t matter much to me if i can clear a Fractal in 5min, 10min or 20min as long as i don’t have annoying people in a group that complain all the time.

Another thing again is playstyle, it is nice that a tempest ele is able to deal more dps, but if the player is not able to use that to it’s fullest, that is playing in medium and short range, and is dead half of the time, all that “possible” dps is worth nothing,

True enough, unskilled players get dead pretty fast when thay are forced to stay in close range of the enemy. But to be fair there are a couple of good reason to stay close by, first off most boonshare has 600 range so if you camp around 1000+ range with your staff you’re getting none of the might, fury, protection etc. available. Secondly in some fractals staying ranged really isn’t an option since the boss picks the target furthest away and shadowsteps to them(Molten berserker doesnt deal considerable damage doing this, +50 frac archdiviner almost oneshots an ele, Mai Trin is generally a pain) causing the ppl camping far away to die faster than squishy ppl in melee.

And as you said you haven’t really done raids but I promise you if you try to stay away from the thing you’re trying to kill you’re gonna get your kitten booted off the squad faster than light, since half the fight is positioning and camping range is wrong positioning.

Moreover, in general finishing a fight faster rather than slower has the added benefit of better performance from most ppl. Killing the same thing for 15 minutes gets tiring and human error comes into play more and more causing mistakes ppl wouldn’t generally make. It isn’t quite as black and white as that of course but fares as an explanation.

Also we’re majorly off topic from the OP, sorry about that if nothing else

Elite Specializations

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rayden.3695

Rayden.3695

No idea what you are talking about,
I would never think about using Tempest on my Ele because I would need to change my play style of “staying the kitten away from the enemy”
going so close as to actually use the overloads is out of the question so the complete specialization would be an absolute waste of a otherwise usable specialization slot.

Also I would never pick druid when i wanted a build not focused on healing and support.

Thing is that most elite specializations support the play style people use on there classes anyway, so surprise, everybody uses the elite specializations to enhance there old tactics (“tactics” as in hitting things with the highest possible damage as quick as possible).

Gotta come back and be a huge elitist —→ I would never take Base ele to a fractal or raid group because it lacks so much dps in comparison, also the only thing that really makes a ranger viable atm is druid with it’s healing and massive offensive support. Open world is then again a pretty meh business since you could run literally anything and make it. The point I am trying to make here is that Elite specs are more or less mandatory(except D/D thief) for major part of the more interesting content available(subjective, I know), whether it should be like that or not is again the whole dead horse thing.

Sinister yes, the easiest alternative after that would be rampager, but you end up losing a bunch of dps if you go for those.

Also assuming you’re going for fractals or whatever you need ascended preferably and getting ascended sinister ones is a pain, same goes for vipers. That is unless you’re prepared to farm a ton of Bloodstone Fen. Anyways raiding wise get exotic viper’s over anything else.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

because they are designed around an entire guild contributing towards them

Out of 500 members there are maybe 10 people that contributes just a little bit. Everybody is greedy. Gw shouldnt ask this much for the upgrades really

So isn’t that a fault of whom you have in your guild and not Anet?

This, we have 30 or so active players in our guild, everyone contributes(contributed tbh since all done but wvw upgrades and who even cares about those), anyone who chose not to contribute got shown the door ever so gently(like 2 guys since HoT launch so not too bad)

Nice enough idea I guess but most likely such an area would need to have good enough loot to hold interest of any players, and even then it would most likely only be max level toons as ppl would get frustrated by encountering stuff they could not kill and would instakill them(if you have not seen how lvl80 mobs react to lvl 30 or so toons, run such a char to sw or something and youll see why it is far from fun.).

Should healing power/ratios be reworked?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rayden.3695

Rayden.3695

I don’t know what OPs point really is but true enough some healing skills on classes other than druid need to be reworked to scale better with healing power so that they could actually function as a supportive healer, only class that truely works in this fashion is Ele/tempest and even that is vastly outclassed by druid.

Overall self-healing skills with 0 healing power are just fine as they function very similarly to potions etc in other games.

Now to OP’s point to it not working, it does work, especially on druid as the healing is additive from the million sources you have(literally 4 staff skills, heal, 2/3 utilities, elite skill, and sigil of water) The main point of being a dedicated healer is to devote your rotations for maximum healing output, if it was too easy it would be boring(not to say that it isn’t really easy)

TL;DR Healing power is fine, most skills that heal need fine tuning on classes other than druid.

ps. never use rune of the druid, use monk rune instead, it’s much better.

The goal is mainly to provide a friendly environment to players of all types, so you can be as casual or elitist as you want, we won’t care. You can be a solo player who wants the benefits of being in a guild or a group content aficionado, all are welcome(Let’s be alone together ^^ ).

As far as “requirements” go there is very little: When doing guild missions you’re able to join our Discord to listen in(alltho we do prefer discord over chat in all communication), you are proficient in english since that is the language we use(alltho detailed info on various things can be provided in atleast finnish and swedish aswell). Last but not least you are somewhere in the adult-ish range in age since sometimes we can be rather improper(read: childish) xD

Returning beta tester

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Rayden.3695

Rayden.3695

Well yeah testing a bit of each is a valid point, in case you decide to get HoT you get a free lvl80 boost item that let’s you test you any class before actually deciding to use the item to help you decide on what to settle on. I do recommend still leveling up the chosen class the usual way however to accustome yourself with it fully.

Now The lvl80 boost item does give you a “default” build and lvl 80 exotic gear to play with, the build and gear is.. hmm.. what it is, not gonna delve into that further to not sound elitist, suffice to say it is perharps not the most optimal thing you could run, but good enough to get a general image of what endgame will be like on said class.

As far as viability in game modes goes, everything is viable in PvE and WvW, only not strictly viable class in PvP is guardian/dragonhunter(you can argue about this however), and even that is subject to change when the next quarterly patch hits.

And lastly, don’t get into a mentality where you think because something isn’t strictly meta “it shouldn’t be picked”, just play whatever makes you feel good and is fun for you. Generally player performance is better when they enjoy playing a class/build even if it’s a sub-optimal one.

you can still level. select a reward track and just keep playing and every once in a while the reward tracks grants tomes of knowledge.

but you cant exactly powerlevel yourself in a giant karma train because the tomes are time based instead of your main xp source being objective-capture-based.

so just get your participation up and flip a sentry every ~10 mins and semi afk, camp a tower or something and warn your neighborhood friendly commander when you sea a see of red names.

It’s actually even better than this in the end. Now you can play with your main to get levels for your alt instead of being one of the easy target uplevels(they are after all ridiculously weak) and weakening the army of your server
