Like the title implies, I was wondering what the best build is for solo PvE in HoT zones.

I generally ran full zerker / staff for large group events and WvW, but I’m getting decimated in full zerker with DD or DF.

What’s the most livable build that still puts out sufficient damage?

Full Zerker, just summon earth elementals and hide behind them….

For raids:
I would not say SOI was fine at all. There was no control over it so you could share boons that you were not able to generate in better amount than their origin. Best example was fury. Mesmer do not generate fury but can share huge amount of it and in the end one revenant buffing 5 mates ends up as mesmer covering fury for 10 people.
In fact the nerf to SOI made it so that it was unnecessary to look at every boon generation for every class.
Generally I think they wanted to not have a single mesmer able to cover 100% quickness and high uptime alacrity for 10 people. This will be possible for 5 but bringing a second mesmer will be a question of DPS gain Vs loss. Same goes with druid. The fact that you get more DPS by having 60 % of your group with a support build to buff the 40% remaining people to tremendous levels is not a good thing.Warrior support is still an outlier though.
That said the DPS buff on sword seems too weak to compensate. While I understand that devs do not want to change too much other class DPS after such a drastic change and let the new meta settle, this update tastes unfinished.

These mesmer comments are bs . No mesmer in the entire game has ever produced 100% quickness uptime for 10 people during the last set of balance. That was mathematically impossible.
They didn’t even nerf druid buffing, so it is still better to take double druid. They did nerf Zerker druids healing so that the personal dps of druids is lower now in some cases but….. not Rly a big deal for most druids….

To be fair, Boonshare Mesmers and Revenants were an absolute plague in WvW, and directly impacted other classes who couldn’t provide as much boons as them by not being allowed a spot on the meta.
The SoI changes are totally acceptable in my book, I’m finally hoping my mesmer will not be pigeonholed into Boonsharing

Complete nonsense. Put durability runes on anything and the no target cap AoE resistance negates any need for this. You only would take 3 mesmers out of what 40 people? Revenants have been broken since HoT. Not a surprise they will remain so.

Detha - The Laziest of the Priory

So I realize this is beating a dead horse at this point but I feel its important to bring up. Since the game’s launch Detha Tremblebones has been a bit of an underachiever among her fellow Priory members. In Ascalonian Catacombs she leads you down Path 2 to defeat the Ghost Eater except when you get to the final room she suddenly chickens out and does nothing to start the Ghost Eater event.

This has been the case for four years. I believe its time she’s whipped into shape or let go for someone more capable.

There’s usually a reason why she fails to start the event and it can be prevented and/or worked around. I’m not saying that ANet shouldn’t fix it, but I’m saying it needn’t be a problem for most players.

It can be prevented by making detha die while pressing you in the flame turrets at the start of the dungeon. This will also cause her to always activate her event even on other paths.

Deaths is buggy, if she dies ressing you she will start her ending event at any time. Hodgins can be bugged similarly.
Hodgins aggro range was mysteriously increased by 450 range.

The increased alacrity will make up for it slightly and put ele on top again. Depending on what they do with the chrono dmg boost we prob won’t notice an actual dps loss much. Just a big middle finger to people who play the other 50% of the classes.

Which is not the purpose of balance, is it?
We are all aware that balance patches are needed, we’re just not happy their approach to it.

Split modes.

That doesn’t apply in this case since boon sharing is a problem in both WvW and PvE raids. In raids it is only an issue for speed running since you can easily finish all raids without the OTT boon sharing.

Please be all means explain to me how boon sharing was a problem in raids and how forcing us to take more chronos will solve that issue.

Balance Changes Upcoming

Greetings, Tyrians!

We are here today to talk about some of the build-thematic changes that will be coming with the next balance iteration. Depending on your chosen profession and your role in combat, these changes may require some stat-swapping on your gear. We feel that giving a bit of a “heads-up” is appropriate.

One of the most notable changes being made is to the healing values of the Druid as a primary healer. Base values for the Celestial Avatar heals will be reduced, while the healing power contribution will be enhanced significantly. The reasoning for these changes is that while we are excited about the Druid being an incredibly strong healer, we would also like to see that role as one of many choices in your attribute build.

Similarly, there will be changes in boon duration and boon application for a few professions. For the Revenant, we’ll be looking at reducing Naturalistic Resonance’s base boon duration. For Mesmer, we’re looking at making Signet of Inspiration’s boon sharing functionality a bit more controlled, giving each shared boon a fixed duration. To help compensate for these general reductions, we’ll be increasing both damage and a few different baseline boon durations.

As this update rolls out we will continue to monitor the effectiveness of these changes, along with the remainder of the balance updates, and will make additional adjustments and tweaks as necessary. Thanks very much for your time!

These are terrible ideas, you should scrap them entirely. Druid healing does not need to be nerfed, its healing is underwhelming as it is, what need nefed is the damage modifiers druid spams without losing anything for it. Nerfing quickness uptime in any way will make thief less viable, and make eles, guardians, and necros much more viable than any other dps classes.

Tempest in Raids after the patch

Thief lost a pretty obvious 5%, tempest fresh air lost like 2-3% and staff lost over 10%, at least when I tested it.

Ele beats Thief only on large targets now, so it’s better than Thief only against Gorseval, Sloth (questionable) and Keep Construct in raids.

On sloth power guard would be better now…

Guardian dps is hot garbage because its too situational. Theres very few enemies that sit in one spot and let you spam hammer 1 for max dps, and when it comes to projectile destruction rev is the way to go because it maintains most of its use while doing that (boon enhancement).

By that you mean ever raid boss except by and slot for 30% of the time?

Are you not happy with the fantastic stale Necro balance? Are you not happy with our only 1 viable mediocre condi build that we have been using even before the expansion, till now and for the next 3 months? Many of you may be confused and unsure what to do with the new changes made to thief, especially the one second cool down added to stealth skills. Luckily I found a really great old guide made by one of my favorite thieves of all time, Beyond B. It personally took me a while to understand and learn this new meta but once I got it I can honestly say I felt great. I hope you guys can see the light as well, and find this as helpful as I did.

Because PS on rezzing will have 1.4k and the aggro can change.

Killed her yesterday with a chrono of 1.5k toughness. No problems at all.

It’s just buggy, kc also randomly ignores that you are on circles, and I had a run of escort helping my friends where we tested wargs and they just afk in front of Glenna lol.

From what I’ve done against Golem
Thief Staff DPS is just shy of Fresh Air Ele.

Taking 25Might, Fury and Quickness
With
Empower Allies, Assassins Presence (?), Str and Dis Banner 2x GoTL Spotter and Frost. I got Staff DPS around 1k DPS less. (26.3k vs 27.4k)

Also taking into account my Thief as of current doesn’t have any Ascended Armour, so the DPS is a little closer then that.
Not to mention the superior breakbar destruction thief now has due to BV VenomShare baseline. So for VG / Matt (Unless your using Aura Ele) Theif might just be better then ele in terms of damage and usefulness considering that less classes have to take CC instead of something else that might boost damage instead =P.
(Yes I’m trying to push thief into at least one boss, yes I am biased, yes I have both classes)

Against a moving target I’m certain Thief DPS will outshine Ele FA due to the nature of static AoEs. Against Staff Ele w/ Large Hitbox. Staff Ele is still better.

Thief is definitely better against vale guardian. Ele vs thief on matthias largely depends on how badly you want to clear ice patches and now much you trust your thief not to accidentally give matthias 150% damage with autoattack (though thief is going to win in DPS because it’s tough to keep matthias still and because shadowstep lets you get more attacks off).

Against xera and sabetha thief is going to give better damage than D/W but the ele will be much better at killing adds so it’s really a matter of what you prefer for your comp.

As you said ele still destroys everything with a large hitbox.

Since you should run d/d anyways I don’t think you should be reflecting with staff auto…

[Suggestion] More Healing in New Raid?

So…here’s the thing.

For their to be something other than a druid healer, you need more than just another class that can heal well.

Since rangers deal pitiful DPS in their most damage-oriented builds and deal even less when they fill up with all the damage buffs that groups want them for (spotter, spirits, glyph, etc.), they will never be taken unless their terrible DPS is offset by their buffs (which it is). However, if you’re going to take a low DPS class just to get their buffs, you might as well have them heal and if they’re healing, you don’t really need anyone else to heal (for most bosses on most comps).

This is why eles have continued to be unpopular as healers in raids, even though they can technically heal better than druids.

As it stands, the best I could expect for healer diversity would be if revenant became a good enough healer using Ventari with a build that could maintain boons on the same level with the current meta rev build. In this case, you’d still have a druid with all the same buffs, but they would just run a DPS build.

Healer rev and ele is probably the best healer imo, but unless raids require TONS of passive sustain then none will run them, just make the message run healing gear and spam mop…..

Druid – most necessary class.

Chronomancer – most often in need of class, role compressed tank

Ps war – easiest to find class

Necromancer – most encounter trivializing class

Dh – hybrid support dps class

Thief – highest dps on small hitboxes

Ele – ranged / large hit box highest dps

Engi – good cc and good ranged condi Dmg, least used except on vg
Also viable power option with rifle

Rev – mostly useful in pugs

The vast majority of posts in this thread are completely worthless. And thief is hardly #2 in dps… ele does significantly less than thief on targets with a small hit box. Xera / vg / sabetha. If anything eles is now the more support heavy and ranged capable lower dps build in any realistic scenario…..

Firearms Traits and Related

As per our discussion series so far let’s talk a bit about changes that would benefit firearms as well as anything else related to it. It is also important to keep in mind that Engineers, like Elementalists, do not have access to 4 total sigils on weapon swap.

Firearms
I do not have all of the solutions and will not pretend to. Here are my changes that I believe would help an Engineer brother out:

Heavy Armor Exploit
Boost Vulnerability duration to 5 seconds.

Why this change
Vulnerability for 3 seconds is really a dirt poor concession. It takes into consideration grenade kit however with the changes to grenade kit (left handed velocity) all other builds mean that this trait is completely lack-luster in performance.

High Caliber
Gain 250 precision and 5% more damage (condition / power) against foes within 240 range.

Why this change.
Those builds running P/S probably will not run Chemical Rounds. This gives them a viable alternative, boosting their damage slightly when things get hairy.

Also P/P fiends now have a decision to make. Do I go for more condition duration when I blow torch a guy or do I want the extra direct condition damage to get him to down state faster instead?

Skilled Marksman
Same as before. 20% Chance to inflict cripple for 2 seconds after a critical hit.

Why this change.
This change allows rifle Engineers to control the distance between them and the enemy. Against rangers it will not stop them from going to town on you but it will help your deterrent case against melee opponents which is something rifle Engineer is power at doing. Since the class itself is not good at manipulating distance between it’s opponents with mobility skills this trait change would be beneficial to keeping enemies engaged.

Also the last thing a ‘Skilled Marksman’ wants is for a guy with a sword to walk up to him and snatch his corn-flakes away. It is also poor that your opponents can often easily use mobility skills to leave you in the dust.

Modified Ammunition
Targets with Vulnerability receive 2% more damage per stack of vulnerability (condition / power). If your target is above 50% HP, 15% chance on hit to inflict Weakness for 4 seconds. If your target is below 50% HP, 15% chance on hit to immobilize for 2 seconds.

Why this change.
You take this as a power build. Unless you are at Tequatl et al you won’t get the full benefit of Mod Ammunition. Even with these changes you still won’t get the full benefit of Mod. Ammunition in PvP however we do inflict a lot of vulnerability, in all variations of our builds (condi / power), and it’s time we took advantage of the potential synergy there.

Now Engineers have a serious choice of GM traits. Are you confident enough in your damage that you go with the chance to stop enemies from disengaging and control the fight? Or do you go for pure burn damage as a condition build.

Rifle
I just want to restate my proposal for Rifle changes in order to make the play-style more post-HoT and less of an absolute snore festival.

  1. - Ranging Shot x2, Semi-Auto Fire
    First two auto attacks are called Ranging Shots. They have the same damage co-eff as current Rifle AA, except they both inflict 2 stacks of vulnerability for 5 seconds. The third attack Semi-Auto Fire is a burst of three shots that have the same damage co-eff as the current AA (Hip Shot).
  1. - Net Shot, CQB roll
    Same net projectile but this skill flips over after use and for 2 seconds afterwards you can perform a roll that has a 1/2s Evade, is a Leap Finisher and moves you forward by 450 range.
  1. - Blunderbuss, Threat Neutralizer
    Same statistics as current skill. If you Evade this skill comes off of cool-down and becomes Threat Neutralizer (modified version of Blunderbuss). Modded Blunderbuss is unblockable and for 2 seconds this skill can be used repeatedly. Threat Neutralizer has a 16 second cool-down.
  1. - Overcharged Shot
    Same statistics as current skill. Inflicts one stack of burning for 4 seconds and blind for 4 seconds. Drops a smoke combo field of 180 radius for 3 seconds that does not inflict any conditions.
  1. - Jump Shot
    No changes.

Why these changes.
As we all know in PvP when the great reflect/projectile destruction walls of China go up one after each other we as Engineers just swap to Grenad-wait… Elixir Gu-not quite it errrr… Tool Kit(?) and go to town. Except no, that doesn’t happen, you leave the point OR stand around being useless.

These changes are designed to keep the Rifle Engineer relevant irregardless which stage the fight enters as well as to return the Condition and Hybrid Rifle builds of yester-year. Also this update gives Engineer Rifle a distinct play-style (high damage from effective use of player skills, CQB shot gun) than the other rifle out there (long range, bursty, unblockable with quickness and stab because get rekt nerds).

Now you can play what stats set you want and still have reason to exist when your opponents inevitably elect to use Trump-ian tactics at your cap point.

Main Hand Pistol
Buff to 2 bleed stacks per AA.

Why this change.
P/S will benefit the most from this change by allowing those builds to apply more pressure. The rare circumstance that Main Hand Pistol AA hits five opponents (mainly in WvW) no longer should be a restraining factor to this skill. This is especially relevant and important to Engineers now that there is high availability of the Resistance Boon, Boon Sharing and the increased availability/accessibility of/to condition clears for most classes.

Modified ammunition. Raids. Icebow. Condi engi. 150% of current dps. Balanced yes?

Or even better… 150% current dps blunderbuss spam!

Sometimes when using unrelenting assault the camera gets stick to where i was prior to using the skill, way to fix this is to use fridge blitz.

It already Happened when you use into a non evade cc. Static field / shocking aura…

New Mesmer Changes

A few things that affect the Mesmer but not in the Mesmer section:

Superior Rune of Perplexity: Changed the sixth bonus. This rune now applies 3 stacks of confusion for 6 seconds in a radius of 240 around the player upon using a healing skill. The internal cooldown remains at 15 seconds.
Rune of the Nightmare: The random activation of fear in the sixth bonus has been replaced. The sixth bonus will now apply blind and transfer one condition on up to 5 enemies in a radius of 240 when players use an elite skill. This skill will now have a 45-second cooldown.

Adrenal Health: The amount of healing generated per stack has been reduced by 10% in PvP only.
Stealth Attacks: All stealth attack skills will now have a 1-second recharge between uses. AKA: They can’t just spam 1 in stealth now for backstabs.

Any 50% damage reduction skill reduced to 33% on ranger, mesmer, necro, scrapper and also just general nerfs to scrapper and tempest sustain make power Mes more viable especially with GS2 bounces.

Especially with no nerfs to Mesmer, on the PvP side of things, we’re coming out of this pretty great. Still need to wait and see how other classes like Necro and DH fair with their buffs/changes. Rune of nightmare change along with buffs to torch could potentially make an Illusion, Chrono, no inspiration condi Mes “viable” with some condi clear from 2 other sources and maybe a 3rd with pdisenchanter. Blind on shatter with a slightly better ineptitude could also be some added defensive offense that could replace inspiration.

For PvE, still no nerfs if nothing else and it’s doable. I just really hope there are no encounters that have enemies immune to phantasm damage.

Overall, most curious about the new signet and will have to try that out.

I’ve seen Scrappers turn killshots into 300 damage wet slaps -_-u

nothing tanky..the second screenshot is when I tested it on the eagle raptors so it should hit hard.

If you haven’t, submit your screenshot to the bugs forum. Devs will pick it up.

Not really to be honest. Our best DPS build is still the hammer dragonhunter. Sword is about 15-20% lower DPS than hammer, even with the new symbol. If you really need a shield like to knock back seekers in VG then sword is a viable option now, but hammer is still the top stuff.

People so mis informed.. Scepter is by far the best dps on guard now…

Well, based on a few cursory DPS tests hammer still does more DPS than sword, even with the new symbol. And even then, guards are still leagues behind everyone else in DPS.

Wrong. Scepter guard does the same dps as ele on a small hit box now….

Tempest in Raids after the patch

Nothing changed, but maybe thiefs finally have a chance of getting into raids (dps diff is smaller now, and dps spike of ele is now more situational (big hit box, longer cooldown on Meteor shower (33% cd reduction now 20%)), + lava font nerf. D/Wh stays in dps, but was very close already to thiefs. I’m curious if thiefs will get raid spots now.

Guard does more dps than thief now…

LS1, LS2, Dry Top, Silverwastes, HoT, every single one of these was hell on earth for a mesmer. When will we ever get a damage buff to cope with LS3? Especially since people keep asking for harder and more challenging content?

Ever played condi mesmer? Pistol 5 oneshots 5 mordrem…. just make sure the menders and together, use it, and watch everything vaguely close die instantly…

Our current dps good enough for LW content, yes OriOri….but you seem to miss the point that it’s still miserable. Can it be completed? Sure. Will you hate yourself by the end of it? Yep.

For the last time. I want a DPS boost. I honestly cannot understand why you guys think I don’t want one.

The major point of your first post was actually “our dps is fine”.

I think our damage is fine for LW content, it can just take a while to kill some things due to us being forced to choose between burst or sustained damage.

What we really need is for % modifiers to affect phantasm DPS. Sure there could be some tweaks afterwards, but that would be the one big change that would make DPS mesmer viable. However, this is about living story and people are forgetting previous mechanics of living story. It’s not just that we have weak damage but sometimes phantasms literally do zero damage based off of fight mechanics. Coupled with poor base damage and you get problems. This isn’t specific to Mesmer although it affects us the most and shouldn’t be used in future updates.

It is pretty deceptive to call 25 might stacks warrior buffs and to assume that the warrior and mesmer buff an equal number of people.

The only time there are equal number of chronos and warriors in raid comps is 1) Mirror comp: Distortion share is a huge factor here and 2) 7/2/1 which is considered not ideal. Otherwise and more commonly, there is 1 Chrono keeping quickness up on 10 people while 2 warriors buff their respective 4-5 people.

Furthermore, just repeat your warrior buff test but with a Staff tempest and make sure to stand in your overload. F1 in fire alone will give 10 stacks of might for 18 seconds every ~18 seconds. Since there is usually 2 DPS staff tempest per subgroup, that’s 20 stacks of might from Eles. Sigil of Strength alone would be 20 seconds of might per proc on a chrono for a ~2% loss in DPS. Fried golden dumplings are 10 seconds of might per proc. With a bit of bonus might from a herald, the Chrono can share 25 stacks of might with SoI. Does that mean Might is a chrono buff now? Another way to look at this is a what if: What if Empower allies was moved to arms but PS stayed in tactics. Warriors would still be brought but might can easily come from other people because it’s the ~25% buff from EP and banners to 5 people that makes warriors part of the meta.

You also talk about 5x Gotl and alacrity uptime not being 100% but you make no mention of banners lasting 90 seconds on a 120 CD. Banners are stationary and a lot of raid bosses having you moving out of that 600 range too. Hardly realistic to have those buffs up all the time.

Yes, Mesmers need buffs in the DPS department in non-raid settings. In a raid setting though, it’s a lot more fair than you realize, especially when chronos make great tanks and have distortion share. Having % modifiers affect phantasms is the best solution since most of those are mutually exclusive with the raid Chrono tank setup although it would give the raid chrono about a 18% buff to phantasms.

They discipline banner alone is 21% you are vastly underestimating the benefit of war buffs here.

I highly doubt we will receive any large damage buffs due to our incredibly party support with alacrity :/

I cant understand why it is so hard to see the need of a dps boost on mesmer.

Even if you consider perma alacrity+quickness:
warrior buffs > druid buffs > mesmer buffs (dps wise on a dps class).

The personal dps of the same builds follow the same pattern:
ps warrior dps> druid dps > mesmer dps

Again the same pattern applies with how easy this classes can mantain/reapply their buffs.

And if you consider the rest of utility the same classes can also bring in the very same builds:

- warrior brings tons of cc ( and can play condi variant if needed to condi bosses)

- druid brings tons of heal(translating in dps uptime or +10%dps to scholar users) and can still bring fury and protection(translating again in dps uptime) and can play condi variant if needed for condi bosses

- mesmer not really too much to add other than gimmick distortion share and boon copy with signet( that is irrelevant to other boons but quickness, i guess it can help on disorganized groups) and a bit of other utilities that all classes also bring.

The dps boost just of quickness is about the same as warrior banners…. and please, you are going to be at at least 10 might stacks without a war and there are plenty of builds that do more dps than a PS war and still generate might…. actually a condi scepter ele can maintain permanent 25 might…. the reason you bring a war is the banners and EpA which net about a 34% dps increase. The chronomancy does that level of dps increase for 7 people. Honestly though, buffing chrono solo dps will do very little to the meta, just make bosses burn a couple thousand dps faster. I would like to say though, chrono does about the same dps as a power druid in a speedclear team…

Kill them or die trying. Easy has that. Non negotiable. It isn’t about being a kittenford but rather a few clear reasons:

1. Obsidian Sanctum was neutered for a reason – that is the place to duel or G v G
2. Red is dead
3. Field of battle – there are no coffee breaks, golden bombs of light and love, etc

It is no different than when the Zergs/Blobs roll over those who scout, solo roam, or HAVOC. It is what it is and the train rolls on.

Well i can say this, from when they have started to fix WvW, yes after they reuploaded the Desert BL’s the lag has been pretty bad. But I would cut some slack to Anet at the moment. To improve the lag, generally you improve your code again and again, when they can bring the wvw to a ‘’pretty good’’ point, then maybe then we shall get something that will improve the lag.

Or use the servers that do HoT meta events and don’t lag you at all with 120 people constantly casting meteors and icebow….. when you are right in front of them with max graphics…..

Server Merge: Too much lag for roaming

The lag has been very intense. I agree. However, it has always been pretty intense with blob vs blob. Now, it is much worse on the Desert borderlands, but the server merge has magnified this issue.

Only bad on desert bls if you have way too many people in one place.

The Eternal battlegrounds is still on worse servers than Dredgehaunt cliffs…. It literally had kitten delay for EVERYONE in SM when we were trying to fight a 80+ TC zerg.
