Totally support the OP here, as it is really stupid not to be able to wear all kinds of armor. It limits the game, is one thing.

The other is: To all the people who QQ about “It would ruin the game if an ele wore heavy armor”- What? Is your fun in the game dependent on someone else’s armor? You better quit right away. Does it bother you so much that someone else wants to be a knight while still casting? Why don’t you find another group then? You’re not forced to gear your ele with heavy/medium armor. But what you are forced to is gearing your ele with light armor. Enjoy the restriction.

So by your logic, I suppose you’d be ok to transmute town clothes on top of armor? Since limiting the game is bad and other people’s armor options shouldn’t ruin the game. We can have people in witch costumes and wintersday furs running around in W3. Thieves with daggers gripped in boxing glove gauntlets backstabbing, while zerg flys across the map on riding brooms.

don’t worry about the white knights necrid. they’re just mad cause your punching wholes in Anets multiple bought “Game of the Year” titles. As for the topic I believe we should grill Anet more about this horrible RNG success/failure percentage.

Oh, did Anet FORCE you to partake of the system as well? Did their nefarious psychological warfare coerce your weak and timid mind into buying gems against your will?

Anet has it share of screw-ups, no parties in Toypocalyse is lame and the entire Lost Shores event was kitten. But to whine on these forums that Anet FORCED you to buy stuff (no doubt you were protesting all the while in your head) is unbelievable and quite frankly implies that you have weak character and no self-control.

I found them a lot harder than Skritt though far from impossible. I play melee tank guardian, but its difficult to melee these guys with their constant retal + stacking AOEs. I switched to Scepter / focus when fighting them and its much easier, albeit a tad tedious.

Pro tip: the damn things can swim! And apparently AOE underwater as well, as I found out T_T

Edit: When I run into tools who open and flee, I enjoy messaging them afterwards that the mobs they abandoned dropped xmas weapon skins etc lol

Why no story mode for fractals

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Sender.7958

Sender.7958

Apologies in advance if this has been posted previously, though I didn’t find any similar topics with the search feature.

Anyway, as the title says. Why doesn’t FoTM have a story mode? Did the devs just get lazy? Here are my random disjointed thoughts on the matter:

1. Story mode would be cool since FoTM is the coolest dungeon, in terms of setting and variety. At least its not some hole in the ground filled with mobs. I’d love to find out more about the dungeon’s backstory, without emo Destiny Edge members getting in the way.

2. I hope this lack of a story isn’t indicative of how Anet will implement future dungeons. Oh here’s your instance, token vendors are on the right, now grind away!!! Ok all dungeons are a grind anyway, but at least make the effort of putting a story behind it so it makes sense why our characters are there in the first place.

3. Finally, more story mode dungeons could also be away of advancing the personal story without having to wait for an expansion. I think it’d be cool to say have a new dungeon where you’re training new members of your order or fulfilling your mentor’s last will and testament etc etc.

You know what? I'm done

But the poem was pretty cute

Sad to hear it didn’t turn out to be the game for you. Suggestion is to go take a break, no sub fee means you can come back any time and see if anything’s changed. Hopefully by then the dungeon paths will be fixed ;p Might also consider switching to a new server when you do come back for a peek, new leaf and all that.

Sender.7958

Ummmm Halloween was awesome. Chests are and will always be gambling no matter what holiday skin the devs slap on it, though for some reason players thought the Mad King chests would be overflowing with loot, the crap rates of Black Lion chests should’ve tipped them off. Other than that Lunatic Court was pretty cool, the scavenger hunt and halloween gates was decent, Mad King’s Maze and Descent into Madness were fantastic. Clock Tower not my thing but I can appreciate it for the JP enthusiasts. And all this kitten in a free update.

Karka event was pretty much fail though. Bits and pieces of it did work, but as a whole, in terms of fun and stuff to do, Mad King was worlds away and better. So I can’t even perceive how you’re lumping them together. So to answer your question, I’d say you’re about 50% cynical.

Sorry, disagree completely. I’d like to know exactly what’s happening so I can plan my gaming around my busy schedule. I’ll trade ‘suspense’ for the ability to know what exactly I’m getting into. If anything, I want MORE details. Anet vaguely advertised Mad King and Karka day 3 as ‘1-time events that would change the face of Tyria.’ Well the former was a 15-sec cutscene that blew up a fountain and the latter was a 3 hour event that gave out exotics and maybe precursors at the end.

A lot of people were asking for better pre-event information after those events, glad to see Anet is responding.

You know like how children with a bag of halloween candy will regulate themselves.

You know like how the Dodo bird is still around because people regulated themselves.

You know like how Rhino’s and Elephants are doing well because of self regulation.

You know how the rich don’e abuse their money and power in politics to get lower tax rates.

People are great at regulating themselves. >.> 10,000 years of human nature, numerous animals being hunted to extinction would disagree with you.

That being said, I’m not sure where you’re coming from. Guardians give Thieves the a pretty hard time, we’re impossible to 1-shot (assuming decent amounts of Tough / Vit) and they’ll run out of initiative before we run out of HP. We don’t have to heal to full or avoid all damage, just enough to survive their initial burst, then its game over for them. And speaking of avoiding damage, between stability and dodge roll we have a decent chance of evading their big hits. Other classes might have more of a legit gripe, but I’m not familiar with their mechanics so I can’t comment.

Its pretty obvious you’ve never done market research or conducted a psychographic / behavioral study of consumers. That kind of information, actual in-game behavior, is a gold mine, not ‘useless.’

If the market research sector really thinks of that kind of data as a gold mine then I know why games keep getting worse. Log files of what people have done doesn’t tell you anything about what they want to do. Running 20 fractals per day doesn’t necessary mean that that player likes the dungeon, he could just want the 20 slot bags or is maybe hoping for a good ring to drop.

In-game activities don’t tell you anything unless you can link them to a players motivation, which you can’t get from just evaluating log files, you have to actually talk to him.

Ummm, which is why I said quantitative statistics should always be paired with qualitative feedback, so you have the whole picture . . . the two go hand in hand you don’t drop one for the other and saying its ’better ’

Or ArenaNet could gather metrics to see what the majority of players are doing while playing the game…

Those metrics would be useless cause they wouldn’t tell whether players are doing those things cause they like them or because they have to do them to actually get to the fun content.

Its pretty obvious you’ve never done market research or conducted a psychographic / behavioral study of consumers. That kind of information, actual in-game behavior, is a gold mine, not ‘useless.’

From surveys, forums and the like you get qualitative, ‘claimed’ behavior. From in-game activities you get quantitative, actual behavior. One is not ‘better’ than the other, they each have their pros and cons from a research and statistical POV. That’s why you bash them both together to get a fuller picture of your audience behavior and motivations.

Thoughts about GW2 (nearly) 100 days later...

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Sender.7958

GW2 is the first MMO I’ve gotten into since vanilla WoW. Its safe to say that I will be playing for the foreseeable future. Its the ONLY MMO I can play casually with my other casual friends and not worry about being left behind. Any time I can jump on, see who’s online, and go do something fun with them. One of them has his fractal ring . . . so what? Back in WoW I’d leave for a week, come back to find the guild is on a new MC boss and I have to grind out some new gear before I can join the raid again.

That being said their recent implementation of ascended gear could have been better. All gear in the game is attainable in multiple ways, why restrict ascended gear to a single dungeon (no matter how fun). But Anet has owned up to that and has said changes are on the way, I’ll be watching what they do closely.

I wasn’t sure it really worked against GOM, and i’m not sure it will work here now. But it couldn’t hurt SOR and it can’t help BG, thats for sure.

As a former GoM player when all that was going down, I can assure you it worked perfectly (if that was the intent). The hackers gave the entire server a bad name, and many legit players just got fed up and left. Anything we accomplished in W3 was by default suspect, and it just sucked to be simply know as ‘that hacking server.’

And it was impossible to pin down the hackers because many of them were guildless level 1 toons. It got to the point where we were wondering if people were deliberately transferring over to hack in the most obvious way possible, to piss off our enemies on purpose and drive our legit W3 community away.

Awesome. Charr Guardian was my first character, and my main. I too had a hard time adjusting to the Guardian gameplay at first, but eventually got it and am loving it at end-game. Remember you have two heal skills available at all time, don’t be afraid to pop them esp. F2 (which I always forget about lol). Greatsword is easiest weapon to use and great for starting out or leveling. I’d actually suggest buying a white version from a merchant if you don’t have one yet, makes the early levels easier and won’t damage your finances in the long run. I did the first 15 levels using a mace, it was slooooow lol.

You can’t do the personal quests for another race. But you can do the heart quests and other zone-related stuff.

Sylvari story is pretty cool, of all the races they’re most conscious of the need to oppose the elder dragons, and there’s that big mystery of where they came from / what’s their purpose / the Pale Tree etc. Though some of my friends found them too serious.

Charr focuses more on their race’s struggles and recent history. They’ve reclaimed their ancestral lands from the humans and overthrown the Flame legion, but are beset on all sides by enemies looking to take them down. Personally I like their bestial heritage and all-around bad kitten attitudes, so I went with them.

Lore of Sylvari stories though ties in more to the overall lore of Tyria (IMHO) so you might prefer that.

Yeah vigil heavy armor is P/V/T. BUT it is only rare-level. For exotics, you have to do dungeons or as Volomos said I’m sure there’s a karma alternative. Invader armor is P/V/T as well, you can get those thru W3 badges.

Honestly though, dungeons are your best bet. AC paths 1 and 2 are relatively easy nowadays and there’re always groups forming up for those.

+1 to the SWG NGE. Nothing comes close to the monumental pile of bull crap that was.

I mean they released an expansion, and two weeks later dropped the NGE bomb that completely flipped the game on its head and invalidated a good amount of that expansion’s content. The most blatant money-grab in the annals of MMO history.

Honorable mention goes to Mourning. People who pre-ordered the game got a plain CD in a cardboard box. With the BETA CLIENT burned on it.

Closing the gap between casuals & hardcore

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Sender.7958

I’m a casual player, and quite frankly we don’t deserve legendaries. For all the good reasons already listed above.

More importantly, we don’t NEED legendaries to do any high-level content. That’s the difference between GW2 and most other MMOs. As a former hardcore vanilla WoW raider, I NEEDED to grind out 400 fire resist gear to do Molten Core, or I would get 1-shot and possibly wipe my entire 40 man raid team. No gear = No play. A legendary is just visual eye candy for the most dedicatedplayers of the game (and lucky, but that’s another kettle of fish). A casual player neither deserves nor needs one. Which is a GOOD thing.

Sender.7958

Guess I’m in the minority here. As a casual player with a family and full-time job, I’m rather pleased with where the exchange rate is now. I vaguely remember 1 month after release 100gems = 30ish silver. No way in hell would I pay cash for that kind of return. With the current exchange rate I’m more than happy to buy gems for cash and exchange to gold. 800 gems will get me nearly 10 gold, which is how much I make in an entire week, since my playtime is limited. Last night I picked up Magmaton on the TP for about 5g, finally have a nice skin for my Guardian hammer. Thank you gem to gold exchange rate!

And before people jump all over me, remember its people like me who infuse gems into the market, thus driving down the gold price for gems ;p

Tier stagnation and how to fix it

Your statement would be true if population were the ONLY factor. Now that tiers look to have (hopefully) settled, all things equal, people will be forced to level up their game if they want to advance. Server coordination for map coverage, cross-guild hand-overs of key keeps and towers, better organization for the zerg PUGs etc. The only way tiers will stagnate is if the PLAYERS stagnate and never try something new other that out-zerging the enemy.

Considering you earn 355 Relics from Fractal Lvl 1-10 and 400 Relics from Lvl 11-20 you have quite a ways until you earn the 1850 needed. That’s 15 hrs roughly if you are doing all of this with a top of the line group to get 40ish % of the Relics you need. Looking at the rate of increase from Fractal Lvl 20-28 you’ll be grinding FOTM for 30+ hours to get this version of the Back piece. During this time in all fairness you’ll earn enough gold to just make the other version. Sad… Very sad.

That’s why instead of powerleveling their fractal level, people should consider speed running the lower difficulty levels. Its a grind either way you slice it so, so why not go the more efficient route?
