Ranger sPvP/W3 Secrets and tips?

Sleepy.2647

It depends on what you want to do with your ranger. In W3 you can solo roam killing random people or zerg and AoE, you won’t have a build that works well at doing both.

Same goes for sPvP, if you want to join random pug games you will want to use a different build than if you play tPvP.

If Heals Rezzed Defeated Pets...

Sleepy.2647

On these events people dies in a massive way and gets oneshotted most of the time. And pet survives fairly well there, unless rangers are trying to use a melee pet which no one really force them to use.

In dungeons or PvP, pets don’t die not even close as much as people says. Sure a pet dies if players are so careless that they use a squishy melee pet and don’t even care to use F3 or F4 properly, otherwise yes…it will die every now and then but nothing serious to complain about it.

And yes, pets die…but i believe pets need some downtime, or do you see other classes doing 100% of their DPS at all times? Most of the time you see thiefs, warriors and guardians playing ranged and excuse me but we beat these classes in ranged DPS by a mile when using ANY pet.
Then we have mesmers who have nearly useless clones (those trully die oneshotted) and necro pets which are even worse, engi biggest DPS spec was nerfed and it requires pretty much to hit a non moving target…so, where is ranger’s DPS missing when pets have downtimes? All classes have downtimes.

Yes, in GW1 you could rez a pet but not by using ANY healing skill, you had to take a slot in your skill bar in order to do that, and another slot to carry the pet. Not to mention that you were stuck with the same pet because pets were “nearly” equal, you could have a more tanky or DD pet but only sightly…and of course you only had a single pet.

Also the rumour is that our pets are supposed to deal around 40% from our DPS? But, what kind of pet exactly did ANet use to get that %? Was it bear? Feline? Canine? Spiders? All pets do different DPS some doing 2 times or more DPS than others.

Sleepy.2647

The thing is, pets don’t die that often as people say if you care about them a bit, even with 0 points into BM.

Sure there are a couple of fights in PvE where the pet will be dead most of the time but that’s quite rare for the most part and the easiest fix would be lowering the damage done to our pets on these “very few” fights. The only encounteer I found to be a pet killer so far is on the last boss from charr fractal, which does the AoE which covers more range than our ranged pets have insta killing them every now and then.

If anyone has their pet dead most of the time, sorry but that’s because of poor pet management. As for PvP they rarely die unless you send them into a zerg.

However if the healing skill didn’t revive the pet directly but instead it healed the downed HP to about 80-90% that would be more like it since you could wait until the pet regens by itself the rest of the bar to rez… On GW1 you could rez a pet…yeah, but you didn’t have two pets and you didn’t have the ability to switch pets to adapt to the situation.

I want Berserker's stats - Which armor?

Sleepy.2647

You just apply another rune and it will erase the old one.

About the grind, you’ll get the sets before you realize it, and doing CoF also gives you good money now that dungeons are more rewarding.
The only choices are either doing dungeons and get the gear stats wise that you want and then transmute it to whatever you want it to look like…or buy from TP the stats you want (some pieces will be more expensive than others)…or craft it which will be pretty much the same as buying the pieces directly.

This thread IS about theorycrafting.
Just like OP said; Assuming “The ranger and mesmer are both elites at their professions.”
The mesmer wins and it doesn’t require much effort.

Not at all, by theorycrafting every class wins, since there is always a better choice for any class.

But…you understand ranger can be ranged/melee at the same time? I think not

By theorycrafting yes, mesmer can counter everything, but that’s not how it works.

Sleepy.2647

So if I understood it correctly, you use 3-4 weapons at once, focus, greatsword, staff…that’s pure theorycrafting.

It depends completely on the build both have, imo mesmer has better chance of winning but it really depends. A bunker ranger has a fair chance of beating mesmers tho.

CoF is easy to get since path 1 and 2 are quite easy and fast. If you really like TA looking you can always get it and transmute your CoF gear to look like TA.
The runes you can change them, so not a big deal…a cheap and great option is to use Ruby Orbs…that’s better than the runes from dungeon sets. Otherwise Scholar if you feel like spending 20-30g.

Ranger Melee Weapon DPS Tests

Sleepy.2647

Well, these test are based in sPvP, people also has to realize that conditions are on their full potential there, critical damage is not

Care to elaborate on that?

On mists and sPvP players have 50-60% critical damage to balance it out, in WvW or PvE players can have well above 100% critical damage which makes critical damage builds much superior DPS wise.

If Heals Rezzed Defeated Pets...

Sleepy.2647

If I’m honest, no, that would be a bad thing. Why? Because between heal cooldown and swap your pet wouldn’t ever be dead in PvE or sPvP. You would never get the pet dead swap cooldown since you can just use the lowest CD heal and keep swaping pets forever.

Aside from high level fractals where against a boss or two pets die often and a couple of bosses (skills) in PvE, pets don’t die THAT often…you just need to pay attention and use F3-F4 to avoid plenty of things.

I agree that it should be averaged equally for the whole party or be removed completely from dungeons.

If you average it eventually people will stop using it after all since they won’t be the only ones getting the boost. And these who want 150+ MF can always make a group full of MFers (it would be fun to watch tho).

The worst thing is not that MF gear exist, the worst thing is that green level 80 gear is much superior to exotic MF gear…and we all know the vast majority of MFers use rare armor and green jewerly. That’s worse than a lvl 80 in blue/white gear just for the sake of getting more profit from dungeons.

Posted by: Sleepy.2647

Sleepy.2647

If you aren’t also booting people for using low-level gear, bad utilities, less effective trait builds, or just being bad players (admittedly harder to gauge up-front), why kick people for using MF gear?

Mainly because people who has bad gear don’t have anything better, while the MFer probably has 3 or 4 sets of good gear sitting on their bank but prefers to use rare MF gear and green jewerly (usual set up for MFers, very few use exotic and still, a green set of normal gear has better stats than exotic MF gear).

I ask myself the same thing, I don’t understand how MF in dungeons made it into this game…I can’t believe MF works in dungeons where you are playing with a group and making your team worse intentionally for a self profit.

I agree with DevaGan completely, i don’t mind if someone has bad gear (mainly because there is not worse gear than MF gear stats wise, as I said a green set of gear will be much better) because at least they are running the dungeon to get better, but having someone using bad gear on purpose is a big no for me.

You don’t have a stay command in GW2 but you have a skill to make your pet defend an area tho.

The only thing i really want applied to GW2 is the AI, other than that i don’t really miss anything from it. Pet stow is a big no for me, ranger in GW2 has the unique feature of using pets, just like other classes have their own. If you make stow permanent then those classes should also ask for a similar buff to not use their “unique” feature.

About the targets, you can hit 5 targets at once with piercing but I never really tested how many is the limit, probably 5. The targets need to be in the arrow pathing.

[Suggestion] Option: auto-swap pet if dead

in Ranger

Posted by: Sleepy.2647

Sleepy.2647

By auto swaping your pet you are ignoring it even more, since you could swap it on the worst time possible after all, for example…when a mob is casting an huge AoE damage which nearly or completely kills your pet as you swap it, or wasting a quickness that might save a downed team member…or wasting a pet swap when you are downed since the pet would revive once you get back or by using downed #3 skill. These are just a few examples.

Claiming that they will see pets in combat 2x longer by having auto swap is a complete joke, I don’t know where you get those statements from. If you were talking about auto-swap when the pet reaches X% HP then that might become somewhat close to being true.

[Suggestion] Option: auto-swap pet if dead

in Ranger

Posted by: Sleepy.2647

Sleepy.2647

The problem is that by giving such thing, you will make new rangers worse by default, instead of making rangers better it promotes being lazy and careless about your pet…and not taking advantage of quickness from pet swaps when you need it the most (if you have 5 points in BM). You are not making any favour to new players by giving them that.

So yeah, it has way more cons than pros, the only pro is not pressing F4 once your pet dies. If they add it…fine, since it would be optional to use, but i rather they spend these 3-5 hours fixing real issues with the game rather than creating something that won’t make rangers better.

Actually longbow range with traits is around 2200-2500, shortbow you hit the nail on the head.

That’s probably hitting from an high spot (or aiming without target?), on a flat floor 1900ish or 2000 at most. If you are in a lower spot than your target you probably have less range as well.

New to Ranger, needing help

in Ranger

Posted by: Sleepy.2647

Sleepy.2647

I suggest you using a DD pet and a tanky pet as secondary while leveling. It also depends on where you invest your trait points (15 points into BM is godly for PvE).
But if I were you, I would use jaguar/bear or jaguar/devourer. The reason is simple, felines make the highest DPS but they are squishy and jaguar has stealth on F2 which also boost its crit chance, so when your jaguar is about to die you switch to your tanky pet which has enough survivality to survive 15-20 seconds until your next swap.

Either way, the key is to swap your pet before it dies, do that and you’ll be fine with almost every pet…but some will be better DD/tanks than others.

[Suggestion] Option: auto-swap pet if dead

in Ranger

Posted by: Sleepy.2647

Sleepy.2647

To begin with, if you want to maximize ranger’s pet DPS you have to learn to swap your pet BEFORE it dies, so it defeats completely the point of having a pet swap when pet dies.

If i understood it correctly, you want an auto pet swap only when pet dies, which means a swap every 48-60 seconds? That’s being the most lazy person on GW2
Auto-swap solves nothing but your lazyness, it won’t make your pet be alive more often, it won’t make the pet do more DPS…it will just allow you to forget about the pet not caring if it dies or not.

The autoattack is completely different since this is a game where you would have to break your keyboard 1 quite fast if you had to spam it.

Not to mention the issues this suggestion raises. Have a glass cannon and 3 guys with MF. Then go do some of the easier dungeons. You’ll get MF and capped damage. How’s that fair for anyone? 5th guy can be what ever, doesn’t matter.

How is that worse than the current situation where you could group up with MFers and suffer the exactly same thing and at the same time not getting “rewarded” for it?

I doubt anyone would ever ask people to use MF gear if MF was shared, maybe 1/1000 groups would do it.

The difference is people who ever used MF gear knows perfectly how it weakens your character, some will tell the truth and some will tell whatever they want in order to keep it like it is so they can “stealth” MF in dungeons for a self profit. The key word is SELF. Self and Group don’t fit each other.

Full green gear with cheap runes is better stats wise than full exotic MF gear. If no one noticed, exotic MF gear has less stats on the main stat and no third stat.
Not to mention that a MFer won’t have a set adapted to their build, they have MF…period. So, with about 70s you can gear up a character and bring much more to your team than a MFer.

And to the above post, half of these quotes are not even mine, wtf?

Comparison:

Green berseker chest- 89 power 59 precision 4% critical damage + Ruby orb (20 power, 14 precision, 2% critical damage)
Explorer MF chest (exotic)- 72 power 72 precision 3% MF

Yeh…MF gear is so good that green gear beats it by a mile.

And to the above post, the first quotes are not even mine, i could answer to all the quotes but most of your replies are just again the overused argument “I play well so I deserve to use MF in a group and be carried by my team”.

You cannot say that it adversely affects a group anymore that having a well geared player with a solid build who can’t play for crap Or having an under geared player in your group.

Player skill and build has nothing to do with this topic, and it’s the only poor excuse people like you argue about in an attempt to be right.

So, by what you are saying…since I can play good enough I should be able to play with my character stripped because I will still be better than bad players and my party shouldn’t complain? Huh? It doesn’t make any sense.

If i had the choice when making a group, I would take any non 80 or non exotics player over a MF player anyday. If I’m going to have to carry someone I rather help the one who really needs it, not the greedy one who probably has a few sets of gear sitting on their bank and is still using rare MF armor and green jewerly (very few MFers have exotic MF gear).
A green set of gear adapted to your build is much better than MF exotic gear, I’m sure you don’t need a proof to know this.

Please show how these numbers significantly hinder or impact a team from completing a dungeon?

Huh, i want whatever you smoke. The stats he posed are just what you are missing ONLY from the runes and it’s not “assuming”, it’s real numbers.
So let’s say, missing about 15% damage just from armor runes it’s already a good chunk of DPS, add to that all the missing stats from armor and jewerly and it will become a whooping 30%+ easily. I have plenty of sets by myself, the difference between explorer exotic MF gear + jewerly compared to berseker gear is 30-50% easily with basic runes…I’m not even gonna mention the difference if you use runes like scholar and expensive sigils. If you compare it to any other build the result will be the same but with other stats (less defensive, less HP, etc).

Why should anyone provide any proof to you about how MF hurts to the team when it’s so blatant obvious, it could be said the same about you, prove that it doesn’t hurt your team because so far everyone who says “it doesn’t hurt the party” simply says that with no actual proof or valid argument.
In the case of berseker/explorer MF gear the difference is being glass cannon or being just glass without the cannon part. Not to mention the majority of MFers use rare armor and green jewerly, and this is a fact.

Make a group of 5 MFers and run a dungeon (Fractal since it’s longer), and then make the same players use real gear and you will see the difference. Of course if you are the only leecher in your group the difference will be smaller.

Balance the dungeons correctly so that a group of 5 players can complete the Dungeon with White gear of the appropriate level. This way the “Level 80 only” and “No MF gear” groups can stop bickering about MF.

It’s already balanced, nothing stops you from doing a dungeon naked or with white gear, just like using MF gear you can do dungeons, but in a less efficient way. I would bet that people can do ANY dungeon completely naked…using a low level to complete a dungeon is like being naked on your 80 after all.

The downscaling works for gear, not only base stats. I have full MF set and normal gear…with MF set i have way less stats even in a lvl 10 map.

As i said, RNG is still RNG.

To notice the difference between MF and no MF you really need to achieve the most MF possible, since if an item has 10-20% to drop, having a 50% MF won’t make a difference but if you have 150-200 MF you may notice an increase.

Honestly, dungeons are the worst place for MF because usually you won’t kill many mobs and chests don’t seem to be affected by MF. On events where hordes of mobs spawn MF makes a difference because you might loot 500 corpses in an hour or more.

Getting rares is RNG regardless of your MF, some people will tell you they get 5-6 yellows an 1 exotic per Fractal by using MF…i can tell you they are trolling
MF or not, you may get 5 rares on the same dungeon or not get any rare at all in 10 dungeons.
I’ve done plenty of dungeons with and without full MF gear, to me the difference in loot is not worth it considering you spend more time doing the dungeon and time = gold.
