You can just buy the bags from Trading Post as they are usually even cheaper than crafting them by yourself…get 8-10 slots (8 slots are like 30-50 copper?) for now…should be enough and investing in a future on inventory expansions is another option (real or ingame money, up to you).

Shortbow is probably the best PvE weapon, longbow has a great skill (barrage) but in close range it makes low damage except Rapid Fire and Barrage which don’t receive the damage penalty.

Axe is not good unless you like how it looks or the playstyle, sword is great and probably the biggest DPS weapon but it’s risky to use it.

My advice…unless you are really into how the weapons look like or really enjoy certain playstyle…shortbow/longbow is a great combo, shortbow/sword+torch also is great for PvE leveling.
Signet of the Wild gives you HP regen in combat for you and your pet, awesome passive signet for PvE even tho you’ll get it when you level up a bit more and entangle is the “must have” elite for PvE.

Not really a good example, not to sound like a cliche but…i couldn’t see any decent 80 on that video, maybe one.

Hell, watching the greatsword guardian (and his mate) rooted by entangle trying to move instead of pressing “1” twice to break the vines really hurts my eyes

Comparing sharpening stone to PI is a joke tho.
It’s probably the strongest racial skill ingame for PvP with a ridiculous low cooldown.

The main reason why it’s not been nerfed probably is because in sPvP people can’t use racial skills and the majority of people in WvW doesn’t know what PI is or when your enemy cast it…the green smoke should stay for the whole duration and start when the casting begins not when it ends, making it more obvious.

@Erasculio, adding money drops inflates the economy, adding item drops does not, it just lowers the prices for these items. So if people just farmed over and over a place that pretty much gives you mainly…let’s say…a charged lodestone, the only impact on the game will be that charged lodestones will be worthless…people won’t get rich.
The issue with arah was that the rewards were mainly money and on top of it you could get more from drops and tokens (ectos).

-Make MF shared for the whole party when someone uses MF gear or remove it from dungeons. A dungeon is composed of 5 players not just one, you can’t add a “greedy” stat that only boosts one player while at the same time it kittens the whole team.

-T6 mats dropping from chests along with higher drop for lodestones (at least the final chest), they will still be rare, but not insanely expensive.

-Ability to exchange an ascended ring + tokens for an ascended ring with the stats you want.

Actually against that boss the pet can be alive the majority of time (I use jaguar/hawk pets on it without any problem). Pretty much the only thing that will “kill” the pet is the fire rain the boss does once in a while where if you swap your pet at that time you keep it alive. That boss rarely shoots agony on the pets (pretty much never if they are melee pets)

If i had to guess…they all did “low DPS” on purpose to have entangle ready to kill larvas easily and make it a safe fight.

so your pet is either useless in passive mode, might as well be dead.

or you swap a pet in just have it die in 2-3 aoe and you wait to repeat.

or you heal the pet and let it get off 1 more pathetic attack on a boss before it dies.

I have yet to see a boss that spams aoe after aoe, there is a difference between putting your pet in passive for a couple of seconds than having it on passive the whole time.
I’m sorry if you can’t handle your pet in PvE.

Even in Lupicus two devourers can be alive for the whole fight…probably the charr fractal boss is the only one who “oneshots” your pet fairly often with the agony AoE to even whine about it.

I can understand a pet getting oneshotted, but claiming that “my pet dies to 2-3 boss AoE attacks” is a joke, if you know the next attack it’s going to kill it…just swap the pet, use heal or make it passive until your swap cd is back…quite easy, isn’t it?

It’s like saying that I die to 2-3 boss AoE attacks because i refuse to dodge.

I don’t like Moa pets at all, i don’t use them. Pets I tend to use are double devourers or jaguar/hawk, and bears in certain stuff. I love jaguar/hawk but i switch to devourers when i know melee pets won’t do much or die “oneshotted”. I wish we could at least change our non used pet even while in combat, it would really help.

About fury…it’s still nice but i don’t care about it, a better pet will serve you more than a buff every now and then. Either way, pets are pretty much a matter of taste but devourers are probably my favourite pets in Dungeons because they are durable and make decent DPS. Probably red Moa boosts more your party if you happen to use it when everyone is close enough tho.

I feel like Divinity is the best for high crit SB builds which are interested in being well rounded. It might not be the highest damage out there, but you get the most stats on the full set. +60 to power, precision, healing, vitality, condition damage, and toughness and 18% crit damage.

It’s not super flashy, but it’ll make you tough as nails.

It gives 12% crit damage, same as ruby orbs but they give 120 power 84 precision. The difference is 9s vs 7g+

I’m not intending to start some flame war between us, but even as a tanky build (I don’t even slot runes, just soldier crests), I can still dish out great damage, on ranger standards, and still be a living fortress at the same time.

A glass cannon has over 100% crit damage and with over 50% crit chance that’s where your biggest damage comes from.

I have no doubt that a power/vit/toughness can do “decent” damage but if you can survive being glass cannon you should do it…full tanky stats is overkill imo unless you play with other weapons (melee).
You can always switch some berseker gear for valkyrie gear which gives you some more survivality without sacrificing your damage too much.
The damage difference is huge, not small. You have 25% crit damage and 45% crit rate, i have 55% crit rate and 104% crit damage tho only 2k armor and 15.4k HP.

It’s just up to the player…to me glass cannon has enough survivality for PvE/Dungeons, it doesn’t have to be the same for everyone.

Ranger Shortbow vs Warrior Rifle DPS tests.

Sleepy.2647

Also in a pure dps test like yours, it’s hard to take into account bleed, which is important both for rifle and shortbow. Unless you have a good idea how you can incorporate bleed damage into your calculations?

It’s simple, first you have to know which attacks cause bleed and then count how many of those attacks you did during those 30-60 seconds. Then calculate the bleed damage (this is harder to calculate for warriors because their bleed lasts 10 seconds, so you could simply average “X” stacks for each class and calculate the DPS of those stacks). For example, warrior can keep 6 stacks by using only autoattack, using skills would make that even less stacks…a ranger can keep 6 stacks when flanking. Let’s say warriors bleed ticks for 55 dmg and rangers for 45, that would be 55×6 and 45×6 DPS just from the bleed itself.
In the case of Rangers it’s autoattacks only when flanking, as for warrior it’s autoattack anytime.

As i remember, in the third video, before i started recording the pet managed to hit him sometimes. That would mean he was in combat. And if you’re wondering why i wouldn’t be in combat, sometimes it happens that when my pet is far away, or when i use guard, when my pet attacks, i don’t get in combat as well.

That ele is out of combat
Combat speed without mov speed buffs is the same as the golem from the mists, and you get out of combat rather fast (3-4 seconds) if only the pet hits him.

Sleepy.2647

Well, DPS is “easy” to figure out but you need a target that doesn’t die fast (LA dummies would be great, except they are not affected by vulnerability and you need true geared 80’s to do that).
Just calculate the hits you do over…i don’t know…30-60 seconds and then make the calculation based on the damage these skills/autoattacks do without crits…and then apply the % of crit and crit damage.

Either way, too much of a headache to already know the result…warrior rifle has good burst but worse DPS unless the ranger doesn’t use a pet.

Well, aside from keeps you hardly stand still in PvP, so usually you won’t see people doing the “belly dance”. Shortbow shouldn’t miss that much tho, longbow should stay as it is just like in GW1 where you could also dodge longbow shots. I said it was an over exaggeration because you don’t see people dancing everywhere, and it’s certainly not effective all the time.

Pet AI pathing is horrible but, as i said even if it was perfect the pet wouldn’t hit a moving target out of combat anyways since out of combat players move away from the hit. Pets don’t suffer from the same moving penalty as players (or so it seems), so they have an easier time attacking, even more if you cripple your target.
The common complain is mostly that they miss their hit on moving targets, not that they can’t reach their target. Also the way pets stay with you when you are on certain spots even if you send them to attack is sort of lame.

Rangers are OP

Well the traps method is not 100% accurate since you can miss some units by “guessing” the center and by throwing the trap before its true max range. Also some skills have “bigger range”, for example torch “4” when traited has bigger range than shortbow autoattack but both are meant to be 1.200

The autocast thing is sort of accurate range wise, i didn’t try crippling talon tho, just torch 4 with and without trait.

Edit: Just tested crippling talon, and the trait is recognized by autocast since the skill is casted, however it says “out of range” and doesn’t hit the target so yeah, bugged. Axe, horn however are not bugged, they all hit at the same shortbow autocast range (1.200).

Okay sleepy, you clearly didn’t understand how i made the tests. Like i said in the first comment, watch the video again and try to understand how i did it.
The trap simply marked the spot, it wasn’t used as a range measure.

I understood it perfectly, for you 1.200 range is when you are about to be out of range, which is not true. The autocast feature is there to cast the skills by itself as long as you are within the range stated by the skill, so if you are at 1.205 it won’t autocast.

The true “bug” intended or not is being able to hit after the range stated by the skill or bugs where the skill covers more range than what’s stated…for example sword “2” is 130+600 but it covers bigger range than greatsword “3” which is 1.100.

Sleepy.2647

No valid argument saying that 600 range + 600 range from traps = 1.200?
What a coincidence that shortbow autoattack or torch “4” has the same autocast range (1.200) when traited. Or that barrage center of the skill it’s at the same exact point…again 1.200 range.

Anet must really have a good laugh at looking at these videos because people makes “tests” without any accurate data. “If it doesn’t work like i say then it must be a bug!” mentality.

It shows the maximum range. Don’t believe me? Check the wiki:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Range
“Range defines the maximum distance within which a skill can be targeted.”

The target of the AoE like traps or barrage is the CENTER of the skill, not the furthest point…it says nothing like what you are arguing. The definition is based on single target spells anyway and not AoE radius spells.

( And as you can see, the pet even gets the agility training, which gives him an edge in speed. What’s wrong there isn’t the speed, but the AI pathing)

To make up for the possible wrong calculation, i even stepped to the edge of the circle, which made the range applied there something like 1050 or 1100.

The agility training is bugged according to people, which i can’t really tell, it doesn’t give 30%, and i know the AI pathing is bad, but in combat that won’t be the case. Not to mention that in PvP you won’t see someone running in circles, it’s a joke of example. Also pets in combat move much faster than players in combat.

The range issue is like i said, autocasts show the real range and if you use trait for 20% increased range you will notice you have sightly more range than shortbow autocast (above 1.200) and without trait you will have to take quite a few steps ahead for the skill to autocast again.

You can’t just assume 1.200 range is where you are out of range because that’s ridiculous….you just have to throw a trap, move to the center…throw another trap and there you go…1.200 units!". The range in your video was well above 1.500.

Your examples are not realistic at all as you can see. Pets do need better AI pathing, but even if they had better pathing the target in your video still wouldn’t get hit because pets out of combat run just like players but in combat with the trait they pretty much run twice as fast. Also players don’t have that much time to get away from an attack which is the main issue.
Arrows can be “dodged” but…you are stuck to “dance”…the ranger just has to get closer or send the pet. Shortbow could use some faster projectile speed tho.

I found the thread funny as an over exaggeration of the issues ranger might have, but as a serious thread it has zero credibility and ANet won’t take it serious.

(edited by Sleepy.2647)

Rangers are OP

As a joke the thread is ok, but in reality these videos are just that, jokes.

Pet doesn’t even get a chance to hit because the enemy is out of combat, in PvP your target won’t be out of combat and probably will get be crippled for a good while.

The dance to dodge arrows it’s known, but no one does that in PvP…you could send the pet and laugh at their dance.

I’m wondering how did you come up with that 1.200-900 range from the 4th video since that range you are assuming is completely wrong.
If i had to take a guess, the real 1.200 units is where your shortbow AUTOCAST ends and not where you are out of range. I didn’t check an answer for it since it didn’t really bother me, but seems a bit obvious.
To figure out real ranges use autocast, and you will find it’s working properly.

Don’t listen to the whining BS, most of it it’s even false (like tanky builds doing more DPS than glass cannon ranger…quite funny)

The best spec for PvE/dungeons is glass cannon if you want to maximize your DPS, weapons are up to you but imo shortbow/longbow is the best combo overall.

Ruby Orbs are great, not the best but they are not far from it and they are cheap…you can get 6 for like 30s instead of spending 20g+ to get 5%+ dmg more. The optimal runes for glass cannon probably are Scholar imo.

The spec varies, some people likes a more defensive or glass cannon. But at least 5 points into BM are a must have for the situational quickness which you can use for different things, for example to rez people faster.
My spec is 20/30/5/0/15, no complains so far tho sometimes i miss the increased range trait on my longbow :O

Rangers are great, the best fractal teams i’ve grouped with (randoms) had 2-3 rangers on the group…it’s a decent class.

Ranger Shortbow vs Warrior Rifle DPS tests.

Sleepy.2647

Who cares about the pistol, warriors can’t use pistol, and longbow is nothing like rifle, your point is?

Rifle is the only ranged weapon a Warrior has that it’s similar to our shortbow. Same range, volley is similar to SB autoattacks, single target weapon, it applies bleeds, slower fire rate than SB but faster than LB, similar cripple skill.

Longbow is nothing like it no matter how you look at it.

Either way, one thing to take into consideration as well is that rifle piercing is much worse than arrows piercing because we don’t lose damage as the arrows pierce through targets…with rifle you will notice an huge decrease in damage (50%+ for each target the bullet goes through?). Kill shot avoids this penalty tho.

Ranger Shortbow vs Warrior Rifle DPS tests.

Sleepy.2647

How is shortbow the counterpart to the rifle? If anything, dual pistols is the shortbow equal: shorter range, higher rate of fire. The longbow is specced for distance attacks, and riles come closest to that range. Granted rifle can be used effectively at any range, but it can shoot farther than a shortbow can.

Both rifle and longbow have a knockback and a volley/rapid fire skill. Both apply similar conditions. And both have comparable ranges and rate of fire. Dual pistols and shortbow both apply bleeds and dazes, both have an escape mechanism (blind, evade), and both have similar ranges. The only advantage pistol has is a burst function but shortbow kind of makes up for that by having a slightly higher rate of fire and a spray pattern skill that applies poison.

YEAH, because warriors USE PISTOLS, right?
I already said rifle is a mix between shortbow/longbow, but in this case warrior rifle is the counterpart of ranger shortbow.

As far as i can tell it only has a skill similar (not even close) to Rapid Fire, the rest is nothing like a longbow.

Our longbow fires at a slower rate than rifle, our longbow has huge AoE and rifle doesn’t, our longbow doesn’t apply bleed and rifle does, our longbow has 1.500 units traited and rifle doesn’t.

So what does rifle have exactly that our longbow has? Right, a similar channeling skill.

You forget that players also die to 2-3 aoes from any boss…even to a single aoe, your point is? If your pet dies to 2-3 aoes from any boss…why let it die if it’s not getting oneshotted?
Even in high lvl fractals pet don’t die that often if you use them well even when they get “oneshoted” by agony.

There is not a build that works for everything…for PvE/dungeons you can run a pure glass cannon build without any problem, in fact it’s probably the best build.

To comment on your build, i don’t like the runes choice because since it’s a power/vit/toughness build you don’t benefit at all from that extra crit damage and precision.
If the build is for PvE that’s completely overkill on your damage output…you don’t need that much survivality.
For WvW roaming it’s ok, but to attack/defend keeps again too much of a tanky buid.
In sPvP seems ok since you benefit more from being tanky.

There’s a factor a lot of people are leaving out of this:
Piercing Arrows

Considering how often you have multiple targets (at least in PvE), it’s easy to at least have your bow damage doubled for much of the time, so even if your pet is dead and even if you are missing a few attacks, you’re doing more damage than a warrior in any realistic situation.

Well, that’s right except warriors rifle also pierce if traited.

The pet doesn’t “die” that fast in PvE unless you have no clue about how to manage your pet. In PvP it can die to certain bursts…just like you do but it doesn’t die that often either unless you send it to a zerg.

Even in Fractals where the agony at higher levels is insta death your pet can still be alive the majority of time.

Warriors make great melee damage, playing a rifle warrior is imo completely trash…it’s like playing a spirits ranger build.

@Akisame, this is no engi…this is warrior/ranger, rifle is the shortbow counterpart, longbow is the equivalent to longbow, there is no argument about this even if rifle has a similar skill compared to longbow.
Even if you think longbow is worse than SB…that’s actually what some people believes but it’s far from being right tho :P

Third, you can’t use a pet. Your comparing weapons here. If you insist on using pet’s then you have to make it more ‘real world’ applicable. In other words, run the test on moving targets.

fourth, speaking of ‘real world’ application, you will need to run the test while moving in and out of difference ranges. Since it’s impossible to stay at max range for the entire battle, the number’s will not be correct, you’ll either be simulating a ‘best case’ or a ‘worse case’ scenario by staying at one fixed range.

However, the only thing this test proves, is that ranger’s can do just a little bit more damage using pets, and two different bows (a fast delay and a slow delay weapon) while hasting themselves during pet swaps, then a warrior can using a slow delay weapon and no hasting. If you would like to run the test’s again and would like help and are in the Tarnished Coast Server, drop me a line, I’d be more then happy to lend you a hand.

About the pet…yeah, because in PvE your target dodges your arrows and your pet so much…not.

About the range, shortbow gives a kitten about range, and longbow can avoid the close range penalty by using RF/barrage. And rifle is not the counterpart of longbow, longbow is. Rifle is a mix of shortbow/longbow so you are asking for the impossible.

About quickness, that’s rangers features, you are asking for an unrealistic test either way because Rangers are capable of having quickness quite often and warriors can’t.

I don’t know how the OP did that test, but i can guarantee you that you can make these 23s without the need of using any of the skills he listed, pet quickness included. I can also tell you that longbow kills faster mist golems at close range not flanking than shortbow.

the whining is mainly done by those who are competitive PvP players.

Not even close to that, the whining hardly comes from competitive PvP players, it’s mostly non sense whines because any competitive sPvP player knows how the current situation is, not really a ranger issue but sPvP in general.

Play whatever you want, imo ranger is good…yes it needs tweaking and some fixes but just like all classes.
If all you do is sPvP where is the deal? Create all classes and pick the one/ones that suit you best.

Don’t even listen to people who says pets are useless or die instantly, that’s completely false.

Just think about this, unless you plan on leveling every single class to lvl 80 you will have to adapt to the class you like, being stronger or weaker than X class…that won’t change since there is no perfect balance.

I don’t see how you can block, stun, reach or anything when thieves are in stealth. It’s the same situation for both weapons, except GS has a block on “high” cooldown and sword/dagger has multiple evades.

Either way, get the legendary/skin you like, that’s what it is about in the end right?

Now that i saw this topic back when the clock tower puzzle was released, i remember farming it a bit for the bags and seeing some people standing on the chest platform, where you had to jump down, loot it and dissappear even when i was ahead of everyone…which left me wondering how the hell they got there and why they dissappeared, this might explain it.

Oh I see. So it was a trait issue. That seems like way too much work to lay 2 traps. I don’t know if it would be that much of an exploit then, unless they both went off. I guess you could lay them in different spots so that there was no way around the traps; but if we’re trap experts then hey, why not right?

You had to use the trait that allows you to throw traps, and then remove the trait (therefor doing it outside combat), and then wait for the cooldown to use traps again…certainly a small bug that no one cared about because it was pointless to use.

People should actually know about the topic before even creating it and ranting.

The fix is not to nerf trap rangers, hell…i believe NO ONE used that bug because it was quite stupid and pointless…switching traits to lay down the same trap twice of course waiting for the cooldown before using the second one…wow, you could be so powerful thanks to that…not.

My opinion of Magic Find.

Stop making stuff up, Sleepy. Seriously. The time disparity is negligible. If a matter of a few minutes is that big of a deal for you, then you need to seriously re-evaluate the time you’re spending in a free to play game. Really. This crap needs to stop getting blown out of proportion that a player or two wearing full MF is creating a difference in tens of minutes for completion time, because it doesn’t.

Com’on, man.

It’s negligible if only ONE uses MF, you are the one who is making up stuff…you are assuming that only one person (you?) uses MF on the group. You are stating that ONE person using MF makes the dungeon be completed a few minutes later, so even if it’s 5 minutes…multiply that by 5 if all use MF and that’s 25 minutes…yeah, so negligible.

It’s simply obvious that people who post to argue that MF gear doesn’t kitten your team are players who use it by themselfs. The difference is i’ve used it as well, but since MF gear is so “negligible” i promote everyone to use it in dungeons and make full MF parties, you won’t notice a difference in difficulty/time but the loot will be awesome!

The problem is fractals have so many different lvls…it’s pointless considering you hardly notice a difference no matter the difficulty of each tier.

They should have reduced the difficulties and have made it harder…Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3 and so on, instead of 9 difficulties for each tier that really have no point, it just makes it a hell trying to find a group at your current difficulty.

Does MF affect mists essence drops?

I’ll never get why people will rail on groupmates for bringing some MF, but not when they overspec survivability. You never hear “Why aren’t you running full berserker gear? You’ve never got close to being downed.”

Maybe because the spec is completely the playstyle of the player, while wearing MF is simply the greediness of the player.

I’ve ran 40+ fractal runs, about 15 of them were with full MF + food…the difference is ridiculous LOW considering the majority of groups skip mobs. Fractals are not a place where you gain an huge profit anyways unless you farm the low difficulties…i don’t see a reason of why anyone would agree with using MF on higher difficulties since time = profit.

If you can do 10 runs with MF gear and 13-15 without MF in the same time you will probably get more profit from no MF runs since chests are what gives the most profit anyways, so the argument “to get more” is actually wrong since time = gold.

On topic, vials seems to not be affected by MF imo, it’s completely random.
