Yes, you can aim with your bow like in Oblivion or such games, tho I’ve never tested how far you can actually hit. Also when you have something targeted and you just went out of range, if you shoot while jumping you’ll still hit your target.

Sometimes on keeps I jump while shooting to hit people on top of the walls, it works quite well with longbow :P

Edit: Just tested it and no, you don’t get any extra range by shooting without a target, even tho the arrows fly through the target they won’t hit.

Now, I’d like to know, how many times have you been on a dungeon run that failed solely because someone opted for MF instead of, lets say, power?

In normal dungeons not really noticable since usually i only do fast paths that take 10-30 mins each. On fractals, plenty of times I’ve had 2-3 MFers in my group and the difference was huge.
I’ve even tested it with a whole team of people using MF and not using it, the difference is HUGE to the point that it was much more harder to complete and DPS was lacking everywhere.

Don’t make ridiculous examples of repairing costs, if you want to use MF in dungeons fine, but accept some people needs to have a choice if they don’t want MFers.
The fact that you can’t know if someone uses MF or not it’s a flaw, and obviously if only ONE uses MF it won’t kitten your group too much…but try with the whole team using MF and then talk.
You can also make any dungeon with 3-4 people by that matter.
If someone chooses to use Vit/Toughness gear they are choosing to be tanky, your examples are completely jokes…when you choose MF you are giving up on other stats for nothing in exchange but a self profit…and yet you are in a group.

Self profit and GROUP are exactly the opposite thing, I don’t even know how MF in dungeons made it to the release because it’s the biggest BS in a game.
And yes, i have a whole MF set which I’ve also used in dungeons until i realized how bad it is for my team.

People calls others elitists but I would bet anything that these same people wouldn’t invite a non level 80 to do dungeons, how is that any different than non wanting MFers in your group?

@Inkubus RNG is still RNG, by wearing MF you are not guaranteed to get more drops, you have better chance. But if rares for example have 0.5% to drop, having 150% MF won’t make rares drop everywhere, MF is mostly for stuff that drops more often like mats, greens, blues.

MF should be for the individual and should not affect the entire party.

And that’s because it should be either shared for the whole party or removed from dungeons completely. It’s an stat that only makes the wearer benefit from it and the whole party suffer from it.

If they keep it as individual stat, they should add the inspect feature at the very least so people actually has a choice.

So according to you no. None of these things proves the actual units given to us, it is making an assumption of that unit. Granted if the range is the same as another 1200 unit item you can tell they are equal, but there is no way to know its the actual 1200 units then.

You can check 1200 range quite easily by using other skills.
For example, Barrage has 1200 range (the center of the skill will be the 1200 mark), traps have 600 range when traited, again on the center of the trap.

Shortbow vs Longbow Damage Calculations

The skill cast time has nothing to do with animation time. As an example, crossfire has no cast but that doesn’t mean you’ll throw 1000 arrows per second.
Longbow has 3/4 cast time but animation is longer…plenty of skills have short cast time and longer animation.
Since no one but devs know how fast longbow is supposed to shoot, i don’t see anything wrong with longbow fire rate.

Honestly, the best advice is to master the dungeon. Get to know what each mob/boss does and you’ll pretty much do well with any build. Every single agony hit is “easy” to avoid and everything can be dodged except Jade Maw agony.

Even tho, unless you really love to use traps and have a condition build, I really don’t advice it for dungeons.

I agree that MF should either be shared for the whole team or removed completely from Dungeons considering there is not an inspect feature. It should average it for everyone, the one wearing it included, otherwise it would still be the same thing.

I have no idea why they implemented such thing for Dungeons, it’s a stat that only benefits the one who uses it, but at the same time it makes your other party members work harder for you.

Busting the Myth of Useless Pets

in Ranger

Posted by: Sleepy.2647

Sleepy.2647

Picking the appropriate pet for the situation is something a lot of players lack_, thus they cry that "pets are useless

This is what makes the difference for me. When I do dungeons and get rangers on my group, all i have to do to know if the ranger is good or not is to pay attention at what pets they use and how they manage their pets.

This is a game where you can switch pets anytime as long as you are out of combat, there is no excuse to being stuck at using the same pets for everything.

I hope Anet allows us to switch the non used pet even when being in combat, this would really help to adapt your pets to the situation even if you can’t get out of combat

Sorry, you are wrong.

Shortbow has much higher range that 1.200, just like many other weapons in the game.
What does this mean? This means that the autoattack will work fine at 1200 but you can still shot manually beyond 1200 and still hit your target.

So, the real bug is many weapons having higher range than the stated, rifle probably doesn’t have “extra” range…so, you are actually asking for a nerf

Shortbow vs Longbow Damage Calculations

Sleepy.2647

Longbow has a fine burst if you use QZ + RF + Barrage allowing you to take advantage of quickness since we all know quickness and shortbow are not good anymore. People understimate Barrage and Rapid Fire, Barrage shoots 12 arrows and has quite a “fast” casting.

What stats should I use as Ranger?

in Ranger

Posted by: Sleepy.2647

Sleepy.2647

I have a full set sitting on my bank.
It requires a lot of positioning to still do subpar DPS compared to a power/crit build and most of the time you won’t be flanking which is completely the only decent damage source for a condition build.

I’ve tried condition and power builds in Dungeons, and i have to say conditions are a joke and don’t fit well into a team that already has other classes using conditions.

For PvP conditions are good, tho not rampager because it’s glass cannon and that in PvP is not good…you need to be more tanky.

What stats should I use as Ranger?

in Ranger

Posted by: Sleepy.2647

Sleepy.2647

Depends on what you want to do, Dungeons, WvW, etc.

Honestly, condition ranger is bad for Dungeons and Rampager is also bad for PvP since you’ll be glass cannon.

The toughness needed depends again on what are you going to do, and in PvE it also depends on how good are you at dodging. Most of the time i have no issues in PvE running full berseker build but in PvP for 1v1 ranger is really better with a tanky “bunker” build.

There is a difference between getting closer and being in their face, just a hint. Shortbow arrows miss if you are really far away and they do the “belly dance”, but at mid range that won’t really happen and you’ll be safe from any “melee” attack.

If you are so blind to not notice when a warrior switches from Rifle to a melee weapon then you shouldn’t play this game.
Not to mention that a rifle build is pretty much horrible at anything else. A rifle warrior shouldn’t be a threat for a ranger, but it also depends on the build/gear you used.

Hi Bila,

I agree that the crafting materials required for Ascended Gear are to much of a grind and we are looking to balance the requirements in a manner that is fair for all involved and we had always intended for their to be multiple ways to get Ascended Gear it just didn’t make it the FotM build.

They even said that you will be able to get Ascended gear through WvW and other PvE places other than fractals. And no, they didn’t post that 3 days ago, i took it from another “quote”.

You will hit your target sooner, but the DPS will be the same since the attack rate is still the same.

To sum it up, it doesn’t really matter if your arrow travels faster because you will still be capped by the autoattack fire rate. Therefor if you can shoot now 10 arrows in 15 seconds you will still shoot 10 arrows in 15 seconds no matter how much they buff the arrow speed.

What pets do you use, and why?

in Ranger

Posted by: Sleepy.2647

Sleepy.2647

For PvE/Dungeons i use two devourers most of the time. Sometimes jaguar/hawk, and in a few situations two bears.

For PvP two canines for the most part, wolf + dog usually.

Why devourers? They are probably the best pet for dungeons and needs little management to do well.

Why jaguar/hawk? They are my top DPS pets, but only used if melee won’t hurt them much

Why two bears? There are fights where you benefit from having bears, for example Asura Fractal with the golem that spreads poison…you send the pet and stay behind your bear to not get hit.

As for canines in PvP, their knockback is great and the fear from wolf is sweet.

Dungeon grind my way to 80?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Sleepy.2647

Sleepy.2647

I’m not trying to convince you of anything, i know by myself because i’ve leveled 3 80s doing maps/events (maps = not story quest) is much faster exp than 2 levels and half per “assumed hour”, since it can be 1h or 2h depending on your team. Sure some teams will do full AC in 45 mins, the majority won’t. Not to mention the time spent finding/waiting for people.

My 80 necro for example has 61 hours played, and about 25h were afk or being in LA doing nothing. That’s with the whole story completed except Arah and plenty of maps fully completed, playing completely solo and no crafting. That was playing normally, didn’t even try to rush it.

If anyone focuses on rush leveling not caring about completing maps or doing the story they could probably make a level 80 in under 25h, without crafting. And if you find a whole group to level with or a level 80 rushing you, that would probably turn into less than 20h quite easily.

If you have to hide the fact that you are going to switch to an alt to leech the last boss that proves by itself that you know by yourself something is wrong with that
So no wonder 9/10 players won’t say anything since the dungeon is over anyways.
It would be quite funny if in one of these runs you found every player doing the same thing and when you logged in with your alt you found another 4 players standing next to you probably saying…“WTF”. It will never happen…but it would be very funny.

As i said, AC is a good mix of exp/gold, but it requires a set group to do the alt thing to get the most of it and you can get more gold in other places and better exp playing normally. I do AC/CoF almost everyday, so i know perfectly how it is.

Considering the OP is probably playing his/her first character which means no level 80 to join AC and do the alt swap, it will be quite hard and time consuming to find groups to do AC and the ones found won’t be doing 3 paths in under an hour.
So, the best would be playing the game normally since you will level up way faster and get enough gold on your way to 80…there is enough “gold” grind at 80 so enjoy every tiny place on the game before you get to that point.

Dungeon grind my way to 80?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Sleepy.2647

Sleepy.2647

So. First you need a full group capable of doing AC full in an hour killing every single silver mob, which is not likely to happen to the majority of groups.
And then, you need to switch to an alt (considering no one else do it) and have your team waiting for you to hit the last boss so you get the silver drop, again this is unlikely since most of the people will tell you to fk off and switch to an alt when boss is at 10-20% HP just so you enter to get the “dungeon completed” reward.

Doing AC full is a good mix of money/exp, but it’s nowhere near the best exp nor money per hour.

The only few times i’ve seen people asking to switch to alts, people told them to switch when the final boss was at 10%, therefor missing the boss loot completely. Which imo, it’s reasonable considering they want to leech the team.

After level 35-40 leveling is completely ridiculous fast doing maps/events, and after level 50-60 it just gets better so dungeons exp becomes less and less worth it.

(edited by Sleepy.2647)

Dungeon grind my way to 80?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Sleepy.2647

Sleepy.2647

I call that money tables completely BS. Considering you miss the drop from the last boss by switching to an alt you won’t gain 4-5g per full AC, and even if you loot the last boss AC doesn’t give 4-5g unless you get rare drops and troll on every single path, killing every single mob that gives money.

Even if you level that way, it would be 2 levels and half every day (unless you repeat it every few hours to avoid DR which i don’t know if it’s possible), which means a whole month to reach level 80 assuming you do AC since level 30.
So, a month to get 100g (on the best case scenario since AC doesn’t grant 4-5g on average) doesn’t look that “good” at all because you could level much faster playing normally or earn more gold doing other stuff.

Only if you do it with a very good team that is capable of doing all paths in less than an hour it begins to be “worth it”.
The average team will spend 1h and half to do AC, unless you don’t kill everything that gives silver and therefor cutting the profits even more.

Dungeon grind my way to 80?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Sleepy.2647

Sleepy.2647

Leveling a character also grants you money without doing a single dungeon… I have a lvl 53 alt and has above 12g and didn’t even sell a single mat…so yeah. Low level gear is worth more on the TP than lvl 80 gear, even some rares.

The exp will be much better doing events/maps, period. And if you switch to your alt when the boss is about to die you will miss 20s+ from that boss which really defeats the purpose of doing the dungeon for money

If you run the dungeon completely from an alt, chances are you’ll spend more time looking for a group that accepts low levels than leveling by yourself.

Sleepy.2647

Doing dungeons to level up is not efficient even if you switch to your alt when the last boss is about to die.

Sure you will get exp + tokens, but outside a dungeon you can easily beat that exp by doing events + maps, and the higher your level is the faster you’ll level.

Well, when hitting 2 targets yeah it might actually do more damage (on the main target only), but that’s quite unlikely to happen since usually it’s a single target or 3 which rarely makes it bounce back to your main target.

I like axe but it really needs a certain build to “shine”. The chill is decent but in PvE it hardly matters, as for PvP it’s nice but i prefer other skills, it’s a matter of taste.
It depends on the traits, gear and what you want the build for…axe is not ideal for everything.

Is axe DPS possible?

in Ranger

Posted by: Sleepy.2647

Sleepy.2647

Axe is so powerful for direct damage that it does the least damage among all weapons, that defines itself how strong it is. It has 3 skills, one is condition damage based, one is a chill and the other one is autoattack. I didn’t say they were MOSTLY conditions.

Even if you happen to hit twice your main target with the bounces which won’t happen that often it will still deal low damage and give you less utility than other weapons.

It also depends on the traits you use but you really have to love axe in order to give it any real use with a direct damage build.

Auto-hit won’t work either. Because it’s a dodge-based defensive game, players need to be rewarded for dodging properly and attacking from the right angles. Tactical movement is a thing that should be respected. Auto-hitting on the start of the animation would’t let players dodge the attack in any way, and would marginalize GW2’s unique combat structure.

So, making a pet attack while moving doesn’t defeat your whole argument of “being able to dodge”? rolf…
A pet would always be hitting his target without a single chance of dodging because your target would always have a pet on their butt considering they run pretty much twice as fast as a player in combat when using the trait.

Yeah, because GW2 combat is so unique that several attacks (skills and autoattacks) are IMPOSSIBLE to be evaded unless you use dodge, which is no different than “auto-hitting” as you call it. That’s why i said that if a pet uses autoattack it shouldn’t miss unless the target uses dodge.

I must be insane for thinking pets would be OP by allowing them to hit while moving…so i hope they add this to the rangers. In fact…yeah, make pets hit while moving.

Err ranger can make the biggest gap out of every class if you play with certain weapons. I don’t know about you but I’m enjoying my swoop + hornet sting monarch leap + lightning reflexes. Playing with bows = gives you an option to damage people from a distance but you give you the insane mobility melee gives you.

Our melee movility comes from greatsword and horn, or sword. Other classes have similar leap skills and speed buffs.

Ele is probably the biggest example of movility, mesmer has teleports, portal, speed buffs…etc, thiefs have insane mobility…warriors have multiple leaps as well as speed buffs.
Ranger is far from being the class with best movility, imo is better than engi, necro and guardian but worse than thief, ele, mesmer, warrior. Rangers can however, as you said make a big gap in a couple of seconds but you need certain weapons combo and “waste” lighting reflex for it.

You don’t have to turn the pet into a kitten OP feature to make that happen, a pet is not supposed to hit moving targets all the time with no delay, if you can’t see how that’s OP then it’s pointless to argue about it. Pets outrun players in combat by a mile.
