So Engineers can't use Hammers yet...

in Engineer

Posted by: Solkard.5136

Solkard.5136

Would Engineers be able to utilize hammers properly though? The other two leather classes have mechanics that allow them to engage in melee via avoidance and redirection (stealth and pets). The Engineer’s turrets, which can draw agro really well, aren’t sustainable enough as a core mechanic to serve such a function. At the very least, the thumper turret needs to be much more durable, and given a very short cooldown.

Which class?

Solkard.5136

Either class is good in a support role.

Go Guardian if you play solo most of the time. Guardians can very easily “face tank” most content, making it easier to get things done if spend most of your time alone.

Go Engineer if you always play with a “buddy”. Engineers are very versatile but innately fragile, making it harder to survive against enemies with undodge-able attacks.

I would say the most Lore fitting is Norn. Ranger skills literally throw up spectral animal figures as part of the attack animations.

But given the lack of lean body builds for male Norn, Sylvari would be a close second with their innate connection to nature. One of your starting animal choices is a plant dog, which comes from the same tree that "birthed’ you.

After that, I would say Humans devoted to Melandru are also a good fit.

Were Charr Rangers able to use guns, I would toss them a vote as well. It just seems odd that any martial professioned Charr would be unable to use firearms, given their intense focus on the invention of firearms as one of their greatest achievements.

I feel the only real odd man out is the Asura. More than anything, you would imagine they would just build a golem pet, rather than taming one.

The difference is I actually let ppl hit champions for participation but the trains kill him before the people that need him can get to him.

That may be your intent, but the end result is the same. You either try to kill them slowly, resulting in the train overtaking you,. or you try to get ahead of the train and down it first, until they just change to your rotation. In either case, the original train will end up merging into yours at some point.

A call to arms

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Solkard.5136

Solkard.5136

How is that any different? All you’re doing is starting another train. The other train will just end up merging with yours. There is no “exclusive rights” tagging in this game. Most of the people are more than happy to just tag a champ for credit and let you do all the work to bring it down. They are farming for drops, not on some sort of “thrill of the hunt” safari.

The only way to troll them, would be to figure out how to glitch out the mob so that no one can kill it. Of course that is probably breaking some sort of EULA and will probably get someone banned.

On the contrary. With Magic Find becoming account bound and easily acquired by salvaging items of any level, I no longer have to constantly transfer gear between alts to be properly geared.

All my characters are now accumulating lots of level appropriate fine and masterwork items. I can easily sell them for well over twice their vendor price, given the demand for them by high levels players for salvage has increased. Or I can just salvage them myself for luck essences to amass even more Magic Find.

My characters are around level 20 and are all able to find gear for themselves, without relying on the market or other alts to remain properly equipped.

Dailies are burning people out

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Solkard.5136

I don’t feel it’s Anet’s fault, because it is their job to make an enjoyable game that promotes participation. That you or anyone can’t control themselves, is not Anet’s fault. It is not their job to make something less enjoyable for you, to disuade you from participating and mannage your other responsibilities.

@OP

The premise that your friends were “burned out” by the dailies does not make sense. For them to be burned out means that they were logging on to do nothing but dalies. That implies they weren’t enjoying any aspect of the game other than doing dailies. That means that they “burned out” on the game a long time ago and were only keeping up their attendence to participate in dailies.

From that perspective, your friends “should” have stopped playing the game a long time ago. That they’ve been compelled to stop doing dailies, which in turn results in them not playing the game at all, means they’ve finally noticed their situation. Bravo to them.

It doesn’t matter if you or your friends are OCD and have completionist issues. That is again, your/their issue; to be managed by your/themselves.

I am not advocating the desertion of the game. Rather that people not only maintain a healthly state of consumption, but that everyone needs to realize that their mental/physical health is ultimately their own responsibility. Stop blaming a game if you can’t stop playing it.

I hope you and your friends will one day have better a better grasp on your/their compulsions. Maybe then you/they will be in a better position to enjoy all of the game’s aspects.

I’m confused. As far as I’m aware, there are sliders for facial features. You can make yourself look like a mutant if you wanted. As for body types, they seem consistent with that of a person who is very physically active. Even “stocky” male bodies are still very muscular without their clothing. I have not seen any “flabby” male body types either.

That said, I would not say any of the Human or Norn body proportions are true to life. But that is an allowance you’re expected to put up with in a game. It is the same with the limited choice of hairstykitten dy posture, voice, vocal expressions, etc. .

Thief Leveling Advice

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Solkard.5136

Solkard.5136

In PvE I generally find Thieves very strong in 1v1 situations. It’s when you start pulling lots of enemies that they start to crumble because Stealth is not really a sustainable combat defense, and they are innately very squishy. It is at worst a dps setup for “stealth” attacks, and at best an escape alternative to losing a fight.

With that in mind, 1v1 you can kite and interrupt an enemy almost indefinitely if you reserve your initiative for interrupts and CC.

In 1vX, I either run away and then pick off enemies on at a time, or rush in and load as many Death Blossoms as I can, before being downed. Then I just wait for the bleeds to kill someone so I can rally and spam more Death Blossoms. :P

I would suggest keeping at least one pistol in your bag because it is a very good kiting weapon. My main issue with shotbow is that the attacks bounce and have AoE, which can often pull nearby yellow mobs, making a fight harder than it needs to be. It is useful in events for tagging everything so you can get credit though.

I feel a Thief’s survivability scales in a similar manner to Elementalists. Looking at their traits, a lot of them augment your combat skills with self-healing. Until you obtain enough traits to augment your offensive skills with enough healing to just go all out, you will have to manage your initiative to not over-commit yourself to a fight you that you won’t be able to quickly power through.

So......where's the grind?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Solkard.5136

Solkard.5136

What I see most is that people want gear and achievements without doing the activities required for them. It’s not even an issue of if an achievement or piece of gear is vital to progress, it’s simple OCD combined with a sense of “attendence = effort”.

There is another thread wherein a poster felt that it was somehow a failing of Anet that events actually had objectives that could be failed if they didn’t attended to them. Somehow they felt that they should’ve been able to ignore an objective, just farm the event mob spawns, and be rewarded as if they successfully completed the event.

I can’t even argue that in terms of game design, as that seems more like a defect in cognitive rationality.

See that is a problem. To be average, you have to use a gimmicky build and if you are not a fan of fresh air well you are pretty much left to play with your action figures.

Welcome to every single profession in gw2. Gimmick spirit rangers, gimmick stun-lock warriors, gimmick condi-burst necros, etc.

That beind said, you don’t need fresh air at all, unless you’re using focus. You can go for a s/d build with more points in water/ arcana.

Will (non-bunker) D/D become viable again? Will staff? I’m not trying to be mean; I’m still new ish to SPvP and I’m legitimately wondering.

For the staff they already said that not all weapons are meant to be viable in every mode in the game (it was a direct respond about the staff).

My objection to their response is based on the fact that they have kitted the class so that each weapon SHOULD to be viable. Why? Because we can’t just switch to another weapon as other classes can. We have no weapon swap to adapt as a situation changes. We have only our 20 skills that are supposed to be the equivalent of having an alternate weapon set, but are in fact just 20 skills that do the same thing and only function in one role.

Currently, the enemies all but ignore any illusions I cast, who also happen to do literally 0 damage. If the only purpose of clones is ammo for shatter, I feel like playing a Necro would be more interesting.

So Illusions just do 0 damage forever? I thought maybe they just scaled poorly or there’s some sort of bug with how damage is calculated because the tooltips say they’re “supposed” to do damage. Even Illusions that inflict condition damage, which is supposed to be unaffected by armor, seem to be doing 0 damage at all.

About to start leveling a mesmer

in Mesmer

Posted by: Solkard.5136

Solkard.5136

As I understand it, a Mesmer’s offense and defense is based around using their copies to draw agro and to deal damage. In the low levels, none of my illusions draw agro and only 1/5 of them do any damage. It’s not even a question of if they do good damage, it’s just 0’s popping up.

At what level do the illusions start doing damage? Currently it feels like the fastest way to kill something is to let it put you into a downed state, stack it full of confusion, and let it kill itself.

I had not imagined a class could be this painful to try and play. I seriously want to slap Anet’s whole QA dept. upside the head for passing this.

I like the way Charr move and how they look in armor, but dislike their combat animations. If you look at them swinging a two handed weapon, you can notice that they constantly have to tilt their head back so as not to lop off their jaws.

I get that it may be necessary to not behead themselves with those particular swings, but it seems like they would’ve developed other combat styles that don’t equate to them just swinging blindly at their enemies.

Most difficult profession to master?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Solkard.5136

Solkard.5136

Elementalist lack a lot of build options currently.

Why’s that?

Because the Developers have stated that the class is meant to be played constantly swapping between attunements. This in turn necessitates the heavy investment of the Arcane line, which lowers the cooldown between swapping attunements.

Also, as the class lacks survivabilty from its inherent stats and skills, most builds also need to invest in the Water line for the self heals, to stay alive.

The resulting number of free points you have left over, leaves very few options in terms of meaningful choices in build variety.

Ele has very bad survival at the start. Their survivability is 90% tied to their traits via the self healing it grants you. Until you unlock them, you will have to run away a lot to stay alive.

The starting Necro axe weapon is a direct damage weapon. Their DoT skills are tied to the Scepter and Staff. Pet summons are located in the utility section. Pets have a secondary ability that appears after you summon them. Other than that, the class lacks the ability to manage pets as well as a Ranger can.

I would not recommend having both an Elem and a Necro. It’s like having a Guardian and a Warrior. They are different, but play kind of the same.

Mesmers are very strong 1v1 duelists. They are not as effective in PvE, given how the AI is coded. Having a lot of decoys doesn’t do much good when the AI just ignores them. Most of their power seems to come from phantasms right now, which people are saying will be nerfed soon.

1) Warriors: Almost all the weapons on the class are very viable. You don’t have to use the Greatsword if you don’t want to. 1-hand sword and axes are just as deadly. Ranged weapons are also very powerful. I have to force myself to melee or I will generally kill everything before they get close to me.

Thief: Very good DPS, kind of squishy at the beginning. Overall a very potent class in PvP, but not as much a PvE solo class.

Guardians: A bit little slower than Warrior and Theif. They are good at farming because they are very sustainable. People suggest it a lot because no one likes to die.

Elementalist: You are expected to constantly switch between all the elements to get the MOST out of it. Map all the keys in a convenient way so that you can do it and try a bit. You don’t really have to do all that at the start, but it will be necessary if you get into PvP or really competitive content.

However, you can get away with with not doing that through most of the PvE content. I just load everything up with DoTs and run around in a circle until they die. But I can attunement juggle if I have to. I’m just too lazy to bother with it most of the time.

2) You don’t have to deposit money anymore. All you monies are bound to your account and automatically shared across all your characters.

3) You pick a server to “guest” to, and for the next 24 hours, you can log into that server with your existing characters as much as you want. You can pick 2 servers to do that every 24 hours and then it resets and you pick 2 servers again. You can join a guild on another server and do all the stuff there and your progress will be saved. The only thing you can’t do while guesting on another server is the WvW PvP. If you try, you will automatically be moved back to your own server.

Elementalist or Engineer?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Solkard.5136

Solkard.5136

Neither class have weapon swapping. Elementalists have different attunements and Engineers have kits.

Playing an Ele entails constantly rotating through all the elements to use skills that aren’t on cooldown. Their survivability comes from their traits, mainly self heals from Water and Arcane trait lines. There is very little variation to their builds right now. Most are based around X/X/X/10/20 or X/30/X/X/20.

Engineers can have radically different playstyles, depending on what kits you load up and traits you invest in.
