Yes thats exactly it… They listed a number of things they planed to do in the future. Clearly stated that it was all subject to change. They changed a few things here and there and then the response they got was “built a legacy of not fulfilling their promises”

“A few things here and there” like the entire design philosophy they sold us on for years but barely survived two months post-launch.

Time-gated crafting was the biggest WTF about Ascended gear, AFAIC. Made it completely worthless as a goal which might have otherwise been worth pursuing.

“Let’s take the worst misfeature of crappy freemium games and apply it to the endgame!” If they sold bypasses for gems, then they’d be as scummy as Zynga et al, but at least it wouldn’t melt my brain trying to figure out how anyone thought it was a fitting idea.

5. The updates. Unless they got something BIG coming then wth am i looking at here? They created a huge world in what? 4 years? Now it’s been 2 and asides content that was there and gone (like marionette, molten facility, tower of nightmares) we’re getting one map that’s size of a single zone from the base game. Yes it’s way more complex and fun, but for pete’s sake…one permanent zone after two years!!

Don’t forget the eminently forgettable Southsun Cove (though I’m pretty sure that map stays empty until 10m before Karka Queen spawns)

if you think that’s bad try being a new player. There are limitations that make no sense. Like being unable to see vistas and points of interest on the map until you hit level 18.

Obviously, new players are akin to infants, and are susceptible to overstimulation. If you could see all those red triangles and bichromatic squares, you’d become confused, start frothing at the mouth, have a mental breakdown, go on a shooting spree, and not buy gems for cash to buy gold!

It would, as you can see, be utter pandemonium.

So I spend 35$ on this, start playing, and what do I get? Maybe a few minutes of interesting story and then hours of follow the arrow, kill stuff for WAY longer than should be necessary, level up, move on. Seriously? This is exactly what I was told this game DOESN’T have. Why do I have to spend 15 minutes dancing for cows and killing worms by spamming a key to fill up a bar?

Your information was far out of date.

As an alternative to beating your head against a game you’re not enjoying in hopes of “getting your $35 worth” out of it, consider the philosophy of “cut your losses.” Give all of the three game modes a try, but if you don’t enjoy any of them, then stop while your investment is still “$35 and a few hours of your life.” Burning a hundred hours doing something that feels like a chore to you isn’t going to make it magically become fun.

I’m not going to give you the old “Wait until $LEVEL_CAP” dodge anymore, though. While the game play opens up a lot at that point, for the past year it’s been so painful to do that I’d just feel like a kitten for saying something like that.

I recently came back to try after a long hiatus and reconnect with some old friends who were still playing, but I found myself with not much worth doing/goals worth pursuing. The only actual accomplishment-based achievement I’m missing is the Dungeon achievement for Orr (still need p1 and p4), and after four weeks, it became pretty clear that it wasn’t going to happen. Legendary-hunting isn’t a goal, it’s a slot machine, and doing my daily cycle of worldbosses just to sell the crap drops on the TP got old when I hit the ~1200G mark. So I figured, what the hell. When I’m bored, I can always indulge my altaholism, right? NPE and the trait “revamp” cured me of that condition in one dose.

So basically, now I’m logging in at 00:01 UTC every night, getting my login chests, then logging out, save for the days when a new LS chapter comes out. I’ll do those once, then resume the cycle. I’m just too tired of PvRNG

I used to have the older version of the Naga MMO mouse, but replaced it with the G600. I do not know what the Naga 2014 is like but the G600 was a vast improvement over the old Naga.

I concur entirely with this post, having also replaced an older model Naga with a G600. Besides the nicer button design which many of mentioned, I should add that I like the software much more (the Naga had some weird driver issues on my PC, too), and that remapping the G-shift button to dodge is so delightfully OP.

Yes, it does. No matter how irrational, nonsensical, or downright self-contradictory an opinion someone might hold, someone else shares it. GW2's business model and the NPE

Targren.6073

You’re still addressing the NPE with your stale-mindset that “If I didn’t see it as problem, then it must not be a problem to anyone.” News Flash: That’s not how it works. Also, queensdale isn’t the problem in itself – its the amount of things that are available to the new player at one time, this is why ArenaNet has gated content for new players.

I’m not addressing it with “my stale mindset.” I’m addressing with the observation that, as a justification goes, it’s utter kitten, and even if it were true and the new players are complete cherry phone gamers, it’s still not a justification for bad design.

What’s even worse is that, by pushing back “completion” (meaning having access to the full range of your characters ability) to the highest level, you make sure that first-time 80s don’t know how to fully play their characters yet. Might as well sell “Unlock a character slot that automatically starts at level 80” in the gem store while they’re at it. It would feed their “livelihood” and poor design is apparently forgivable in that pursuit.

Thank you all for the feedback, crafted 50 rare swords and only got 3 exotics.. was my first try so i don’t mind.

Selling off other stuff and slowly making some gold. Only did those 50 rare swords as i had the mats and it was free. Gonna keep at it and trying.

Any other suggestions are always welcomed as well.

-Valin

I really suggest you reconsider flushing them down the mystic toilet. I’m not sure what stats you’d put on your swords, but even gold 80 swords with crappy prefixes go for 30-50s a pop. Even ignoring the cost of the mats, you probably could have made more progress toward your precursor by selling the swords, or salvaging them with a mystic/BL kit and selling the ectos.

Mystic toileting is pretty much the worst way to go about it. Even running World Boss trains and “hoping” at least makes you more progress, in that you’re only out waypoint costs, so your bank acct goes up, not down, toward the precursor price.

If you’re going to try to do PR to defend ANet’s bad decisions, at least do us the courtesy of having your points be coherent. I’m not even demanding that they be correct (that’s too much to ask from spin doctors), but the gem store is an entirely different set of problems from the NPE. You could have made the same point without the pointless appeal-to-profit argument by pointing out that Anet said that the early game was scaring new players away.

Not that I buy that excuse, either. No one who has ever played an MMO or CRPG can honestly say they found Queensdale “overwhelming,” and I question the wisdom of trying for new player retention by making the first six to twelve hours of your game, as in, how said new players are introduced to it, stale, boring, and completely lacking in variety.

Unless what they’re actually out to do is change their target market to the Zynga Zombies (which they might find a little difficult at a $60/acct initial layout) but the NPE does seem like it could appeal to the phone-freemium crowd.

I’m dead serious.

Pretty much this.

My name is Targren, and I’m an Altoholic. I’ve played each class through to the end of the PS (still haven’t done Arah Story on all of them though) and have a spare slot that I would just roll up a new alt when I felt bored.

Or I was, until I came back and found the NPE waiting for me. Cured me in one fell swoop. Now, I played through to 80 on a character named “X’s Mule” simply by virtue of it having been made prior to the Curse of the Slogging Levelling being cast over Tyria.

Pretty sure I won’t be leveling any more characters.

Rather than having to worry about how to designate what is a “hit” and what is a “miss”, what about an actual token (for the love of the Six, stored in the wallet).

Make something like a “Losers’ Salvage Kit” that doesn’t return any materials, no globs, no sigils… instead, you get some of these “Misfortune Tokens” based on the items rarity. Then a vendor (or several, I’m not sure how many tabs/items become too many on a single vendor) could be added that sell the things people commonly want, costing a value of tokens based on their rarity/drop chance.

So, for example, Greens could be worth 1 token, Golds for 2, and Exotics for 4, Exotics for 6, etc.. (If you want to be insane, you could even make Legendaries worth 10 or 100 or something). Nothing for white or blue, of course.

Then you can have the vendors sell the precursors for 5k, 10k or whatever tokens, and possibly other things like “Named” exotics, sigils, etc. Maybe something for the limited-time skins, etc… so that festivals like Wintersday don’t turn into “Got the meta achievement, no point in doing it anymore since I’m more likely to get struck by lightning twice.”

I think the best part about this idea is that we know that the framework is already in place. Season 2 shows us that adding new currencies and vendors is readily doable (and hope the wallet is eventually expanded to support them soon), it doesn’t require modifying the player data structure to track “misses” or “time since hit” or any of the other sort of suggestions, and it lets the players themselves decides what’s a “victory” and what’s a “fail”, without having to code it.

I think the “downside” of lowering the resell value of precursors is a specious complaint, at best. Anyone selling so many precursors as to be negatively impacted is obviously already sitting comfortably as a right-tail outlier, and have enjoyed the fruits of it long enough that reducing it for the good of the vast, vast majority is warranted.

The hardest part of this, I think, would just be determining what to offer for the tokens and what “reasonable” costs would be for them.

NB: The “placeholder” names I used are tongue-in-cheek for humor, but the idea is sincere.

Event Reward Decrease: Bug or intention?

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Targren.6073

Targren.6073

This isn’t about loot, it’s about the event rewards.

Some more information: This isn’t a DR thing (or if it is, that’s a bug) since it happened 3 times straight, the last was as same as the first, and it was not only the first time I’d done the event for the day, but it was my first event AT ALL for the day.

According to the table on the talk page of the wiki link above, 62 copper is the reward for a Level 24 event.

I just tested it on another event (collecting apples), a level 4 event. The rewards:
XP: 6,464
K: 131
M: 65c

The XP reward looks to be Level ~60, but the Karma and Gold are ~25.

Still another update:

Took a level 48 alt into the zone and did the same event (it was the first one that popped).

Gold medal reward:
XP: 1275 (~L30 ish?)
Kar: 83 (~L15)
M: 41c (~L15)

So clearly the rewards have changed, and the original question remains: was this an intentional change, or is something bugged?

Event Reward Decrease: Bug or intention?

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Targren.6073

Targren.6073

As noted on the wiki , Dynamic Events previously had a a reward floor of (Level – 30), so an 80 character would get the rewards of a Level 50 DE if the level of the event was at or below 50: a good mechanic for making previous content worth completing.

Tonight in queensdale, I had my 80 ranger in there for a guild RP event when the bandit windmill event popped on us. We completed the event, but we didn’t get the level 50 reward. I don’t remember XP or Karma (I don’t pay much attention to them on my 80), but I certainly noticed that the money reward was 62 copper instead of the usual 1.2s.

To check whether the floor had been removed or rewards lowered across the board, I brought a level 47 alt into Dredgehaunt for an event. The events there rewarded the expected XP, Karma, and gold, so the clear conclusion is that the reward floor had been decreased or removed.

I checked the update notes and found no mention of this, so I’m posting here. Is this a bug, or a stealth nerf?

Why Skin Wardrobe should be a high-priority

in Suggestions

Posted by: Targren.6073

Targren.6073

@Blueshield
I do agree that ANet would likely see the better option as doing it per character. Thus more likely to swallow the red pill and heavily consider the benefits of adding in the wardrobe/armoury feature in some capacity.

There’s a logistic benefit to account-wide, besides being better for the players (IMNSHO): doing it per character basically means storing at least 5 times as much data, since each character would need a separate data set.

So yeah, as brilliant as this idea is, and I do love it, this is why I don’t think we’ll ever see it. Like someone else said, they’d think it would cannibalize the gem store (I personally think the opposite, and I doubt I’m the only one who passed on the skins and costumes because they’re not unlocks like in GW1) if it was account-wide, so they won’t do it that way, and they’ll say it’s too much of an infrastructure burden to do it per-character, so they won’t do it that way, either.

equally frustrating is the lack of condition stacking on these things. A condition spec’d necro using Scepter is just useless as the base damage is garbage without the bleeds. I’m sure other classes have the same issues. I can understand not having confusion, weakness, chilled etc have any effect, but poison, bleed, and burning (DoT based conditions) should have the same effect they have on regular mobs.

how do you bleed a log?

only one i can see making sense is burning.

How do you bleed, burn, or poison a walking pile of rocks, for that matter. You couldn’t in GW1, and it seems to me that they decided to eschew “reality” in favor of not making classes like rangers and necros useless against those mobs (a good move, IMNSHO).

Magic Find - Chests

Targren.6073

Uhm no, seems more you have to equip MF gear even before you engage the enemy, to get better loot. And no, looking the dev answer, MF gear is just related to enemies, not bags, mining, chests etc.

I don’t think it would be before you engage, since the system doesn’t know if you even deserve loot (and therefor roll what the loot would be) until the enemy is dead and it tallies who did enough damage to warrant loot.

It would have to be before you engage, since you can’t change gear in combat, and the loot is already determined when the mob dies.

Since bags are valid loot from enemies and are not chests, I don’t see why this wouldn’t qualify. A bag is no more than a collection of loot that only takes up 1 space, while a chest is a different ‘animal’ altogether.

The dev said nothing about mining or gathering.

“magic find only effects[sic] the loot generated from killing monsters.”

Then there’s his selection as Marshal of the Pact. This one is a real kicker. You’ve got the Vigal, Order of Whispers, and the Priory all willing to turn command for this massive joint operation over to a person who’s sole benefits are that he isn’t a member of a particular order and he knows about Orr. He has zero experience leading armies, or even small groups, next to no combat experience, no pertinant knowledge about logistics, tactics or strategy, no knowledge of anything that isn’t Orr and no demonstrable charisma. And we, the player, are meant to accept that the Orders would accept someone like this as their leader voluntarily. It just doesn’t make sense. Trahearne should have trouble being selected to lead a community knitting circle, let alone one of the most important organisations in the world.

Oh, now be fair. They covered their doubts about his leadership abilities in “Forging the Pact.” I mean, they gave the orders a WHOLE single dialogue tree. With three steps! EACH! Clearly, that’s not a hole in characterization at all!

Ranger Warhorn #5 (Call of the Wild) forces combat?

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

I suspect this is intentional behavior. While we all use these abilities to speed up our out-of-combat travel across the map, they are actually intended to be used in-combat (where the auto-attacking makes sense). Frankly, I’d rather it work correctly in combat and be a little finicky outside of combat than the other way around.

There was never a problem using them “in combat” and having auto-attack triggered automatically is more than “a little finicky.” It hasn’t always been this way, and if it’s intentional, it’s a pretty heavy nerf to the skill (and the rangers’ warhorns as a whole), since the combat-related buffs are pretty poor compared to the utility of the swiftness buff as a speed boost.
