I did think that was odd that people were putting stab on as fast as I was taking it off lol. Didn’t expect this. Hopefully we see a quick fix.

Hi there. Just wondering what your longest personal wait for that big sell on the TP is. I’m here killing time while mine is hitting 2 days and getting undercut. The waiting is destroying me. I’m so impatient lol. Anyone have any good stories with this?
Thief
As a guy that joined one of these guilds years ago I can say it is important to do your research on that guild before making that decision. The guild I joined is a massive one that needs applying on their web sight and a 5g payment. I had friends already in it. I was skeptical sure but after meeting the people in the guild and seeing the AAA quality web sight they seemed okay. The guild likes to keep large amounts of gold stocked for massive lotteries. The more people joining the guild and members buying 5g lottery tickets the bigger the prizes. Its all optional to buy tickets. They are also a really active guild in all game types.
I’m not saying trust everyone but instead use your own discretion. They aren’t all bad. If 5-10g is breaking the bank just don’t do it. That can be a lot for some people but nothing for others.
Thief
Distracting Daggers is near useless. No matter how I try to push it into a build it simply is a 3rd tier skill. Take Bandit’s Defense… Stun break, Block and knockdown all on a quick cooldown. Shadow Step, does anyone run without this? SoA… one of the strongest skills going in the current condi meta.
Its seriously at that level. I’ve just been staring at the build editor trying to think of something lol.
Thief
I get making a spam interrupt build with on interrupt sigils, but isn’t it just plain better to not over commit to that idea and just use headshot/steal for that and save the utility slot for a stun break/ black powder/ SoA?
Its not going to be used in pve unless I don’t know about a weird need for increasing a cooldown on something.
For pvp and wvw it just seems kinda not great. Am I wrong here? Can it work with s/d, s/p, or staff? I have no idea. You guys know of anything?
Thief
It is kinda funny how high in regard we do hold players that post videos. So of course im going to eat my own words and go with one. What I’ve personally seen through those videos is crazy good skill usage and timing. I gotta go with Min for wvw. Dude is just really…. really good at the game.

I don’t like the stress of a gametype where I am dependent on others to also perform well. Not saying I’m better its just the thought of others having my outcome in their hands at all in a short timed format stresses me out to the point of not being able to enjoy it. That is likely a personal issue with myself.
I agree with the homogenization/powercreep not being preferable. I miss classes feeling much more different.
I also just find WvW more enjoyable but that has always been the case for me.
Thief
How can this not be fun? No more BG hiding behind siege while having equal numbers, now we have YB for that. Finally able to play in smaller groups, as someone above mentioned it. Can’t think of any bad thing that happen for Mag going to t3
It’ll be fun for a day and a half, then DB will be gone and the only YB around will be in a single T3 keep bristling with arrow carts from every open spot. I’m sure you’ll enjoy walking around the rest of the week in 4 empty WvW maps.
Idk about that. I think a lot of people are coming home from spring break (I’m headed on a plane in an hour). I think DB will do what we have always done. We will just have a fun week and do what we want. I can’t promise we will give Mag or YB a run for their money enough to entertain them but I would be lying if I said we cared. Many of us like the low teir gameplay. Its pretty fun.
Thief
Would have loved to see something like this, and taking parts out of existing wvw maps to use as maps for this. Say SMC, the bloodlust area of alpine etc. Lots of nice places that could be sort of cut out and made a own map for something like this.
Never thought about it before but I would love it if you took the boodlust portion of the maps and made that a game type for roamers. That would be amazing. Keep the same bloodlust rules and make it king of the hill(maybe time held for bl or first to hold for 2 min and obtain it). This might discourage people from zerging. Not sure about gaining the bl buff but a 5v5v5 or up to 10v10v10 with a 15 minute time limit or something….. I would play the kitten out of that.
We haven’t even tapped 3 team small party games. If we got new game modes revolving around that for wvw or pvp I would be so happy.
Thief
(edited by TehHobNob.4687)
Tried all the tiers. Personally i’ve had way more fun on the lower tiers and I think I just want to stay down here. Its more relaxed, roaming is fun, and people just come together for fun fights. T4 was a bit of a ghost town for a while but that is to be expected. Population drastically changed with the server link swap. When I was in the higher tiers I barely noticed, but wow is it a huge difference in T4.
Thief
It is frustrating getting hit by a party of ghost thieves as an acro staff thief.
The encounter usually goes something like this:
Get hit with 6+ condis, I then shadow return and signet to remove 6. Its not enough to remove the posion which is ticking for 2k+. Its the only thing left on me. Escapist’s absolution does nothing because why would they attack after applying condis?
Running more condi clear could be done. I could run dash instead or instead of instant reflexes run pain response. <— That is probably what I will do. Instant reflexes is so good for getting stomps and defense but more condi clear every 16 seconds hilariously might be worth it.
could run withdraw and or trickster with it as well, but I would rather not. Not like any of this matters. The amount of forum and reddit posts really point in the direction of the trap build being shot down several pegs. time will tell. For now I’m going almost full marauder with crusader weapons and a few Valkyrie pieces for more vitality. I was barely dying before with 16.5k health. Bumped it to 20k with condi reduction food. It wont happen agian.

You’ll notice you can’t use Vault on flat open surfaces that are already known as buggy no-shadowstep areas.
An example would be that little plateau in DBL near South East Camp that stretches a good 5000-6000 units along the Cliffside bordering the southeast air shrine. You couldn’t steal/shadowstep/IA from here before, and now you can’t even vault in this area.
For those who don’t know, this isn’t a little sliver of walkway, its fairly wide.
I haven’t tried it yet but I am now assuming this applies to wvw bridges (like in hills inner), and the outside part of inner stonemist near the gates. Ports never worked there either. I honestly don’t think the LOS for vault was a good change to begin with. It was not abused to my knowledge.

Thief
The problem with ghost thief trapper build is that it can damage you without breaking stealth. That is fundamentally broken and needs to be removed from teh game. As annoying as condi chrono is, it can’t damage you without breaking stealth
you pretty much nailed it.
Thief
The animation is stretched out if that makes sense? Like its the same time-frame but the movement feels as if my character is hovering in the air for a bit. Its subtle but my muscle memory is just telling me its different.
With quickness its for sure not working properly tho. If you try to vault max distance the actual attack will go off at near 2/3 the distance in the air, completely missing the target while you land the full distance.
Going up ramps with it is busted because of LOS. If you are near the top of the ramp but not on the flat surface and try to vault max distance or so out onto the flat surface your character just stops in place by basically an invisible wall. The distance is not traveled. I did this at the royal terrace ramp going to the second floor.
Thief
there is no point when the thief is still squishy in raids and pve in general. Buffs to all roles except the thief. Good for people which uses it to wvw or pvp.. for clean… conditions, a skill which have almost all other roles… but less evades makes the thief more squishy for pve, and more time in the ground… more quality of life… sure…
More and more they are doing the thief unpickeable for people which likes to do pve with the thief.
well the good news is that the less evades only apply to pvp
there are no nerfs to dodges for thief in pve or wvw. That being said it still is a less than great pick for pve raiders in comparison to some other classes so i’ve heard.

Yeah I’m convinced too. I put it in the ama thread they are doing in the general discussion forum.
Thief
Is the way Thief’s new Vault works completely intentional? I noticed that now it gradually moves to the spot where it’s meant to land, which leads to some clunky camera movement, whereas before it would sort of quickly jump to the place it’s going to land and then do a vertical slam.
There are also bugs related to the placement of the final Vault slam when with quickness.
I have to second this. Vault feels slower, floatly, and clunky. With quickness it looks broken with the attack of a full ranged vault being 2/3s the distance and in midair while you sort of glide down to your full distance to finish the animation.
Something seems extremely off.
Thief
(edited by TehHobNob.4687)
Making vault affected by quickness is fine, but the way it moves now feels and looks much worse. The movement portion starts much slower and results in this bizarre “floatiness” that didn’t exist before.
You’re also locked in to the animation and cannot weapon swap out of it like you previously could which is an annoying but arguably understandable change if intended.
I agree. Trying to spread this as much as possible for awareness.
Thief
As a thief….. ghost thief did not need a buff. That is just silly.

I’m copy&pasting this from the update patch thread from myself regarding these vault bugs:
I personally feel like the animation is stretched out if that makes sense? Like its the same time-frame but the movement feels as if my character is hovering in the air for a bit. Its subtle but my muscle memory is just telling me its different. Maybe I’m just crazy.

Yep, vault was butchered. I absolutely hate how it looks and feels.
I don’t notice any difference with vault? maybe with quickness, I haven’t tried it that way yet, but normally I can’t say it feels any different from before…

you cant interrupt vault midair anymore with weaponswap, and vault animation is slower then before patch or?
I agree vault feels slow. Its just off somehow and just feels wrong. Its even more off with quickness. The animation stops mid air as apposed to smacking the ground. It isn’t timed properly.

even if both shadow step and vault require line of sight, I’0m still able to get to places with vault that I can’t using shadow step… weird.

So wvw thieves got buffs and that is all I care about. More condi clear is always welcome. Want to play around with the vault and bound changes. Ghost/trap thieves buffed. CnD buff lol thats neat.
Question to you pvpers. Was acro staff really such a large issue for game balance, being that even #s fight role and does this fix it? I was under the impression that d/p was king of all thief roles for pvp.
haven’t meet any during last season…
Yeah that is what I was guessing/ same answer from my friends. Begs the question….Why the acro trait line pvp nerfs (hard to catch and Upper Hand) if it really wasn’t even used? Only thing I can come up with is they want to lessen the safety net it provided.

I like the way Blade and Soul did open world pvp. It was completely optional. You had to equip a tabard that had an opposing faction tabard as well. There were quite a few opposing factions. Pick your side and go nuts. If I recall correctly it took a while to take off the item so you couldn’t cheese it. If you’re not wearing the item (which gives a warning before use) you’re not tagged for pvp. That way people who don’t want to participate wouldn’t have any huge complaints other than events going on. Maybe not have it available on maps where meta events were currently happening? Idk. I would have so much fun though.
I just want to fight in new places and enjoy the scenery.

Hey I like this thread OP. I always play thief too in every mmo. I like the style, I think stealth is okay, but my main draw to it is always the mobility. I like feeling like I can be anywhere in an instant to do massive melee damage. I like playing smart and on my toes with a low health pool. I like that everything is fluid and most of our skills are not locking me into long animations. Speaking of animations they are subtle and look superb.
GW2 does something special I really like with thief that many others hate. I absolutely love the initiative system. Playing with this is like playing with an endurance bar in Darksouls, Bloodbourne, and For Honor. The only difference is that thief is faster paced, has other major cool-downs, and has the separate endurance bar for dodging with a more forgiving dodging system. Be that it still takes some effort on the user’s part to get right. The initiative system allows me to manage all my weapon skills on one energy source which can be used quickly, but I always have to be mindful of overuse. My muscle memory just does this on its own over the years but it is still there in the back of my head.
I don’t have thousands of hours on anything but thief, and nor do I plan to. I’m having way to much fun in WVW. So thanks for the thread op. I hope a ton of others jot down their classes too. This is interesting.

The birthday gifts should come with a free transfer token. Letting a player move for free once a year (or rather X times character slots) would improve enjoyment of many WvW players. Moving servers often makes for several weeks of exciting new play with new friends and enemies.
I could get behind this.
Thief
As someone who uses impact strike…. pls no more invulnerably on down state in wvw. I can dream.
Thief
As far as IP goes , were I taking staff and CS I would take IP over either of the other two traits as a matter of course especially in WvW or PVE. The healing is so very noticeable with a high crit rate given the cleave of the set added to the AOE damage output of vault.
You can avoid healing as a stat entirely in such a build and with just a tad better then minimum health and armor of around 2300 , keep your health near full.
All of these things have to be considered when playing with your stats and trying to find that sweet spot. Something like an IP or assassins reward can then help fuel a rune choice and alternate trait selection. As example I am not a fan of scholar runes unless there some form of healing other then the main heal in the build because the downtime of the bonus not worth it while at the same time something like GI out of acro can work quite well if you can keep your health high.
Well you found me out. I’m that guy who runs acro with staff for roaming/zerging XD. I completely agree with you on that if you run scholar you need some other form of healing. That’s the only way I’m running them.
Acro just lets you be sooo very aggressive with your gap-closers and attacks during a prolonged fight. I like Deadly arts and crit strikes for sure but with acro/scholar instead that dmg is somewhat brought back up (with trick and DD). The swiftness on dodge with bound is welcome too.

100% crit from stealth is on CS now, SA has the juicy Rending Shades now.
I’m now having one of those back in my day moments. Thanks for clearing that up lol.
Also now I feel like I have to say… about CS. I did play it for a while and enjoyed it. I had to look up the trait (hidden killer) to make sure I got my facts right this time lol. So when I played CS personally it was fairly recently. I few months ago I loved No Quarter with the rest of the CS line and flanking strikes/trickster in the trickery line. Unlimited fury was an idea I liked. That was a lot of fun to play so I never looked at hidden killer personally.
I also like the idea of invigorating precision in wvw because I like to run it with full zerg in solo open world pve. Haven’t really tried it yet though. Up to you guys. I do appreciate the call out tho. I don’t like posting outdated info.

I personally like around 16-17k health. It depends on what your’e trying to do (zerg/roam) but go less than that and I start worrying about condi pressure in long fights and wont stick around. Lower than 15k and I start to worry about OHKs. Any more than 18k health and its hard to full heal. That can be important against foes with procs when their enemy is below 50% hp(theif, war, etc.) For staff/ d/p build I run crusader weapons for the bit of toughness and healing power (legendary easy to swap stats) with marauder armor, and zerk trinkets. For D/P / Shortbow I run zerk weapons, marauder armor, and zerk trinkets, and personally like to go as glass as possible in traits/skills for fun (even assassin’s signet too just so I have one less out for a challenge).
For the runes and Shadow Arts, firstly I don’t think that 100% crit out of steath trait is ever worth it anymore. It used to be… back in the Yishis days, but for now I would rather pick something else personally. But what do i know i haven’t run SA in years. I see it as not optimal personally but run what you like man
.
You are right about dare devil runes. They work really well. Better than I initially thought for pvp scenarios. I like them but personally prefer scholar with the crusader weapons and precision food/oil (and when I switch builds its already full glass). Daredevil runes make up for a fair amount of crit % if using staff/bound especially. I liked using them. You couldn’t go wrong. I like around 60-70% crit chance with scholar, and 50-60% with dare devil runes(these of course without adding fury).
Hope I could help in any way.

I like looking for the comm by myself as well. Its a fun game if you can pull it off (I love impact striking the pin in the middle of the enemy zerg/best feeling ever). Thieves can prevent snipe too. Every once in a while blast a black powder on your pin. If they are going after your comm hard do it as often as you feel comfortable, and then do it a bit more. That de-targeting means a complete reset for those snipers.
Pretty much its not something to whine about. It is easily avoidable. Just communicate with your team and I promise its really difficult to snipe. If anything this brings a few engis and thieves into zergs, and they are actually wanted there to help. Imagine that…

This is the sole reason I haven’t gotten into pvp since launch. I love playing thief but everyone thinks they are in the right and the easiest blame is the thief. Even if they do their job people still find a way to throw the blame their way. I don’t need that stress. I’ll stick to wvw team fights and roaming instead. I just simply find it more fun.
Thief
Other tips for countering are watch for asura or sylvari base thieves. The racial skills are often used in this playstyle.
If you play thief do not rely on escapist’s absolution. Any ghost with half a brain will notice and not attack you after their condis are applied.
Just roam with a stealth trap and place it.
Don’t pay attention to the ‘only bad players die to this build’ nonsense. The people that post that know full well what they are doing. Many builds can not beat that. Some people like roaming and welcome a challenge. Go find them instead. Just avoid the discription above. Let them go elsewhere.
Thief
It doesn’t matter if it can be done. Half the PvE players will quit and that will end the game. The dev’s know this from the repeated squashing each time it is suggested.
Good luck getting them to end their own jobs. The hatred of dueling and all it entails is what’s wrong with it. It is intentionally not in the game, not missing from the game.
Please give more information on why people would quit playing if dueling was added into PVE? Would it be because of the losing and or unfairness of a build? Or would it be because of people play dirty?
This is the simplest solution that can make everyone happy: If you don’t like to duel, then don’t duel. If you do like to duel, then you can duel as long as you follow the rules that are already known to everyone who does duel.
It’s a psychological thing. It doesn’t matter whether it logically will affect players or not, players will see it and many will feel instinctively it is the start of a trend they wanted to avoid when they came to GW2. It’s why many kicked off (understandably) over ascended gear, because so many came here to avoid just that. It didn’t matter the stat jump was insignificant.
It’s all about perception for the wider community. Being able to ignore it in this case is irrelevant, whether logic supercedes that or not. Duelling has enough negative baggage from its history in other MMO’s for its mere presence in open world in this particular game, to have a negative effect.
Duelling in pve or open world is not something that will attract players in great numbers. It will however, scare off players. That’s a net loss. Beyond adding in new tech, there is no reason not to add it to the pvp lobby as a separate area or a queuing room, but there is no convincing reason to bring it into the pve/open world area either.
And I’m sure for every person that agrees with you there are others that disagree. It’s subjective. Some people really enjoy it in other games and would here as well. Some would not.
Thief
Honestly the argument that dueling fosters a negative environment is rediculous. That’s just assuming everyone that duels is incapable of being respectful toward other people. Yes there are trolls. There are also trolls in open world pve. If you have ever seen auric basin fail you have seen the death threats in map chat. Dueling is optional. It would be a welcome feature to many. To those that just couldn’t play the game if dueling was added you need to serieously chill out. It wouldn’t hurt you anymore than other features in the game.
That being said we do have guild hall rooms. They are nice but I can’t use mine. We use ours for other purposes no exceptions. 100% Rep guild means I don’t get an arena. I like my guild. But the systems block an average player to edit an arena. It’s always controlled by guild leads. It’s irritating but I get over it. Dueling in open world would be a much more casual and easy access experience. I would play that with friends for many hours.
Tidr; the community is more divided on this than the US election.

Last time I saw staff in pvp seriously was this time last year when Caed was still on team spoookie. I remember everyone lost it because everything else was mirror comp and was unbearable to watch. It was pretty unanimous that staff build was the most entertaining build of the day for sure. Also he got called MVP of the match by the casters. Trying to remember who it was against. Then he left the team and I quit watching that season. It was boring. The same comp every game.

I want certain things to be split as well. Mesmer and rev changes for pve/wvw are a great example. I haven’t heard of anet stating recently they want to split skills. I’m looking and I hope that’s true. I hope you’re right. It would solve many issues.
As for how downstate works I don’t know the community’s opinion and I don’t think it has been polled so I have to disagree there. I’m personally in the camp that such a change should be universal.
Thief
I mean yeah it says pvp but one could easily assume that would mean other game types that actually include player vs player. That’s a pretty massive change and just breeds further inconsistency while maintaining the we won’t split the game types attitude. It’s just weird.

Several times since the last fix for it including the removal of the on down invuln have not made a difference on the frequently occurring unintended missed stomp. It’s a small time window but that invuln is still there for the third hit sometimes. It feels buggy and sometimes it doesn’t say anything. The skill just doesn’t hit. The animation happens but it doesn’t go through.
Btw this is in wvw. Was the on down invuln removed only for pvp and not wvw?
I mostly happens if the target goes into downstate just before the last hit.
