I know the mmo genre has always been more centered around the pve aspect of things rather than pvp. i hate to say it but gw2 certainly follows trend and is really lacking in the pvp department. Pve in gw2 is probably great (im strictly a pvp player so i wouldnt know) and im sure many people love it, but for me at least (and im sure im not the only one) pvp is where the real replay value of any game comes from. Pve is only as interesting as the newest content while pvp is as entertaining as long as there are other real players to compete against.

All this being said, it no secret that players are quickly getting bored of pvp in its current state. If Anet really cares about the longevity of their game, and im not saying they have any incentive to, heres how to unarguably improve gw2 pvp. Note: these are ALL of the things i believe pvp could benefit from. I know gw2 is free-to-play so i dont expect everything i mention to be added, its up to anet what they feel is worth it. i can tell you this much though, the more of this they add the better pvp will be..

-Comprehensive stats w/ viewable pvp profile
-Leaderboards
-Skill-based ranking system
-Variety of gametypes
-More maps
-Duels
-Arenas
-Real matchmaking
-Guild vs. guild

Basically they should take a long hard look at the way BF3 is handling things.

I too would like the option to store multiple builds that can be swapped out of combat. Sometimes the build your run with in PvE isn’t necessarily the same build you would like to use in Dungeons.

I’m fine with just the way things are now.

Anet was kind enough to allow dyes to be dropped in-game which is counter productive to the dyes that are also being sold for gems.

But people want dyes account bound.

Sure lets make the dyes account bound, but lets also remove the ability for dyes to drop in-game.

That way the only two sources for dyes are either from buying with gems or gold from the TP.

Fair is fair.

Nothing left to do in game once you get geared, more content that is catered to those that are level 80 and already maxed geared would be nice.

Raids are one idea, but I’m sure Anet can come up something that we all can do in big groups, requires skill to accomplish, rewards the player adequately for their effort and is fun.

As an Engineer and Mesmer player I can honestly say that a good Engineer without grenades or bombs can hold their own.

I do extremely well with solely a p/p elixir build.

However if you face those types of Mesmer’s that heavily rely on clones/phantasms to confuse you then you have to get good at spotting the real one and mow him/her down fast.

Works every time.

With people like you two posting, I’m starting to wonder whenever my time is wasted here — I already pointed out several times that (and why) adding something new, instead of changing something that already exists, carries more weight then meets the eye.
If the developers wish to add something new, in accordance with their long-term game plan, then more power to them, but when players wish to add something, that may or may not necessarily be in accordance with that hidden plan, then it warrants a discussion at the very least.

Also, a philosophical question — is it more “chlidish” to discuss an idea or discuss the discussion of an idea? What you’re doing here is the latter, and in this case — the latter is called “thread derailing”.
This is the engineer discussion, not the suggestions forum, in case anyone’s wondering.

Feel free to waste your time else where.

Players here are discussing possible additions they would like added to the Engineers combat style. If you don’t agree go somewhere else. Your pointless negative comments aren’t needed nor wanted.

You are allowed to make whatever feedback you wish, regardless how rediculously game-changing it sounds. The ones who know the Engineer’s concept the best are the developpers, and they have a vision for this little maniac. They won’t simply budge away from their concept just because some player doesn’t feel like this class is what it should be like. They know how to judge between what’s reasonable and what’s not, they’re not robots simply going by votes. For instance I could suggest I wanted a kitty-launcher, a million would agree to that, but it would still not happen because it would be racist towards the Charr.

I think a few players commenting here need to get over themselves.

If some players have a problem with the way the rifle works, and are suggesting an additional alternative for long range combat whats the big deal?

How does this affect you at all? Guess what, it doesn’t.

No changes will be made to the current rifle weapon. It wouldn’t be fair to you players that enjoy the way the rifle currently works. So if that’s the notion some of you have are getting you can relax; the rifle won’t get touched.

However, arguing about ideas of additional long range weapons and kits that provide a feature many players would like added to the class is just childish.

Sounds like a great alternative to the mortar, but I think what the majority of people had in mind is a long range kit that was actually mobile, not stationary.

This definitely needs to be added to WvW maps (friendly players).

When a player dies two things happen:

  • They must pay in order to use the nearest way-point so they can revive.
  • They suffer damage to their armor.

While the damage to the armor makes sense, the fact that players are forced to pay in order to revive themselves is absolutely ridiculous.

This portion of the death penalty needs to be removed completely and replaced with something more appropriate that doesn’t require coin in order to accomplish a simple function that should be free.

Seems like well thought out, fun kit.

I just have a few questions about the kit that will help me see myself using it in combat.

  • What are the distance requirements for each skill (aside from Rocket Swing)?
  • Is this kit intended to be used primarily within melee, mid-range, or long distance?
  • Do Spider Mines include splash damage upon impact?
  • In the ability Rocket Swing, what do you mean by blow back?
  • Does Rocket Swing also include a knockdown or is it simply an Engineers version of Ride The Lightning?
  • Whats Shrapnel Cannon’s range, and does it include splash damage?

Flamethrower- Please fix

Flame Blast shouldn’t go through enemies like they weren’t there. It should explode on impact, not on a preset timer.

The other problem is that it gets obstructed ALL the time. So either it goes through the enemy and doesn’t explode as you intended, or it misses.

Something like this should have been fixed in a short time frame. Just make the hit box for the Flame Blast interest with enemy hit boxes and explode upon contact.

Grenades are long range, stationary hitting, AOE damage, dealing kit. It is NOT the same as a long range, single target, mobile, power damage, dealing kit; which engineers are currently lacking at the moment.

If you don’t like the Engineer’s rifle, you probably don’t sPvP much.

Rifle vs Grenades

Rifle VS Grenades.

  • Due to the AOE damage that grenades have, they automatically do more damage when compared to a rifle. However, grenades are extremely easy to dodge/miss, have slow hit time, and poor casting while the engineer is dodging/avoiding attacks.
  • In other words, if your trying to hit a moving target you will miss more than you hit. If your dodging attacks you will miss more than you hit. Grenades simply excel only if the target(s) are stationary.
  • The rifle however allows damage to be dealt to the enemy regardless of their movement, and regardless of the engineer dodging attacks. The rifle also has a small AOE cone at 400 range (Blunderbuss) that isn’t bad if you are up close to the enemy. The rifle also has great cc abilities but doesn’t have the same AOE potential as grenades do.
  • To keep it simple – grenades do more damage but only if the target is standing still.
  • If you really want a versatile AOE crit build I recommend duel pistols. The auto attack (Explosive Shot) has splash damage, the bullets of all the skills pierce multiple enemies, it has a cone spell (Blowtorch) that works well at 600 range and deals massive damage, and another (Static Shot) ability that hits all enemies within close proximity to each other.
  • However please note that duel pistols are a crit/condition based build, not a power one.

Yeah its a pain dealing with the mortar, especially since it has so low health and armor that one AOE spell kills it.

Allowing players to repair it is an option we need. Buffing the mortars health and armor is a necessity.

Great for its healing abilities, not so great for anything else. The damage output with the elixir gun is incredibly low, even when properly built for it.

1st Place would go to Duel Pistols.

  • Due to its piercing abilities as well as its fast AOE damaging abilities such as Static Shot, Poison Dart Volley, and Blowtorch, you get to tag as many enemies as humanly possible while at a nice comfortable range of 900/1050 (Blowtorch 600).
  • The pistols auto-attack also has splash damage, adding even more to its tagging abilities.

2nd Place would be the Flamethrower Kit.

  • It also has nice burst damage that allows you to hit up to 4 enemies at once when using its auto-attack Flame Jet. The limit of enemies being hit by Flame Jet is on the engineer bug list.
  • If you distance yourself accordingly, you can also use the number 2 Flame Blast, to tag as many enemies as possible.
  • No 4 Napalm also allows you to tag as many enemies as possible, but only if they are hit/walk through it.

3rd place would go to the Grenade Kit

  • Due to its incredibly fast and high AOE damage you get to tag as many enemies as possible.
  • However this kit only works if the enemies are standing perfectly still.
  • The downside of the grenade kit is that dodging enemies and maneuvering about hinders your ability to attack. Either by not allowing you attack, due to no auto-attacks, or by making it harder to cast AOE due to constant movement.
  • An even worse downside is when the enemy is constantly on the move. This makes AOE casting a pain, often times making you miss simple attacks due to the enemy frantically moving about.

Last place goes to the Shotgun/Rifle hybrid weapon.

  • While the rifle also has piercing shots, the rifles abilities are far more single target oriented, with the exception of Blunderbuss, which shoots out in a mini cone, but only at max range of 400.

Yes they should improve based on the engineers stats. Having them constantly get 1 shotted and with poor damage output at level 80, makes them the least useful ability an engineer has.

I really tired of the pimp/pirate/musketeer armor themes. Out of all the end game medium armor I only like ONE set. Anet really needs to add some variety to medium armor sets. I as a medium armor user shouldn’t be drooling at light and heavy armor, wishing I had those sets instead of the fugly medium ones.

Some class specific armor would be nice. Engineer shouldn’t look like rogues and rangers. Its just wrong.

Achivements

  • Various achievements could be added to the game that are class specific, in this case Ranger specific.
  • One such achievement, as suggested by Hobgoblyn.7984 could be completed when a Ranger collects all the various pets available.
  • Another can be given to the player when the pet finally reaches adult form.
  • Another type can be given for collecting all the animals of a specific species.

Could there be some sort of reward system for collecting many different varieties of pets? So even if there are pets one will never use, perhaps having a large collection (not requiring a COMPLETE collection) could give a stat boost to any pet you are currently using. Something like each pet you have gives a +1 to a particular stat of all pets. Or, it could just be an achievement point thing.

I’m not sure if Anet would add the +1 stat, but the achivement for collecting every available pet is certainly a great idea.

Bring back the melandru’s stalker, I want mah bojangle’s back! yes in gw1 i had a melandru’s stalker from pre named bojangle’s.

I refuse to play my Ranger again until I can tame a Dolyak!

I completely agree with this post, I find the pets overall boring and majority are useless with their command ability (Seriously, a boar gets "search area for improvised weapon’? most useless skill of all).

I like the idea of pet progression (it starts of as “Juvenile”) and taming of pets. It would also be nice to obtain potentially rare pets, I want my own “Sourfang” (if you played the Order of Whispers you would remember this).

I would love it if they added the pet evolution idea. The thought of my pet progressing with me, getting physically and visually stronger as I get physically and visually stronger (gear) is something that would make playing the Ranger extremely fun and enjoyable.

The title says it all “Much needed.” I don’t know exactly what went wrong with the pet system when they were developing it yet from what I’ve read it seems like they had tons of great ideas.. and then just kinda forgot they ever had them.

Pet progression is a big one for me, if I’m decked out in 80 legendary gear some day with a massive long bow and axes the size of myself in each hand I sure do not want to have a juvenile -anything- standing by my side. I’d rather just go it alone and leave the “kids” in my pocket dimension.

Glad I’m not the only one who noticed that most of what was talked about when it came to Rangers and their pets before the game came out, was never actually implemented.

Having the pet visually change to a tougher/meaner/powerful/graceful/awesome adult form while the player/pet progresses would be an enjoyable accomplishment for anyone playing a Ranger.

There are many armor and weapon skins that are only available for karma. Some pretty sweet ones too.

Not if you wear medium armor. Boy do most of the medium armor in this game stink. So far all my karma is accumulating because there isn’t any decent looking medium armor to purchase.

Nekroseth pretty much nailed it with what I hate about the engineer.

Although everything Coglin posted was just useless his 3. They will not put near the effort to fix all the broken traits. hits it on the head.

I also agree with Thamyris 1-4 as well as Xelnigmas 5-6.

The engineer is a fun class, I just find it frustrating when I have issues with the same problems these guys do.

I’m not sure what Anet plans on doing with the Engineer, but they can start by fixing all their bugs and adjusting their damage, which is on the low side.

There are some various different “styles” of combat.

Direct-damage melee
Direct-damage ranged
Condition-damage melee
Condition-damage ranged
Supportive
Defensive/Control

And then there is even a matter of AoE, GTAoE and Single-target.

We simply do not have direct-damage ranged. I dont consider the Grenadekit a viable ranged direct damage due to it being GTAoE. Goodluck hitting anything over a distance.
Rifle is more melee then anything. And Elixirgun is hardly damage to begin with.

Infact, all our “ranged” weapons/kits are designed in such a way they are much stronger if they are infact used in close range. There is no ranged weapon/kit that is not penalized for actually being used at range.

Pistol/Pistol: PDVolley will miss 3 or even 4 darts quite often if used even at 900. Bumped to 1000+ with a trait and its woefully inefficient. Blowtorch requieres mid-range to even hit, and Blowtorch is 300% more effective when used in <200range (effectively melee)
Rifle: Blunderbuss is your secondhardest hitting ability. It has an untraited range of just 400 (500 with traits). So its hardly even ranged to begin with. Its damage is ~220% higher when used in <100range (lower then MELEE range!) then at max range.
Jump Shot’s jump alone is good for 1/3ths of the total damage it does, something you only get if you are in melee range.
Elixirgun: Hardly any damage on this thing, but Fumigate is fairly shortranged. Using this over a long-distance means lower damage then in close range simply by the lack of Fumigate.
Grenadekit: This is a no-brainer. It takes 4sec from cast to impact at max range. Goodluck hitting ANYTHING with this that doesnt want to be hit.

We dont have a single weapon or kit that is designed purely for actual ranged combat, without some contrived mechanic that motivates (or downright forces) you into close-range or even melee.

You’ve managed to sum it up perfectly.

Hey guys, how about this. How about either…

A) A rocket launcher kit. (thematic long range and can have high damage fun attacks)
B) Lightning Gun or Pulse rifle (going with the fact we need more lightning fields)
C) A gravity gun. Just bring over the pull ability from the tool kit AND while we’re at it bring the crowbar attack for garanteed lawsuit by Valve.

My Techno Gun idea.

Replaces: Throw Mine
1200 Range on all abilities.

1- Impulse Shot. Shoots a quick shot from your Gun, inflicting Vulnerability on your target and enemies around your target.
Damage: 231
Vulnerability: 1 stack, 6 seconds
Combo Finisher: Projectile (20% chance)
Radius: 150

2-Plasma Container. Shoot a plasma container at the selected area. When triggered it explodes, stripping a boon to all enemies in the area.
Damage: 287
Explosion Radius: 180
15 second recast
->Becomes Detonate after you use the first skill

3-Charged Shot. Steady your gun, readying a shot that does more damage the longer you charge it.
1 Second Charge: Damage: 208
2 Second Charge: Damage: 650
3 Second Charge: Damage: 1080
Combo Finisher: Projectile
Recast: 20 seconds

4-Flux Shield. Create a lightning barrier in front of you that damages anyone who crosses it.
Damage: 340
Duration: 4 seconds
Combo Field: Lightning
Recast: 35 Seconds

5-Overload. Release a burst of energy, overloading your Gun. Stunning enemies around you and Dazing yourself.
Damage: 180
Stun Radius: 200
Stun Duration: 3s
Daze Duration: 1s
Recast: 40 seconds

Tool Belt Skill:
Influx Retreat. Damage enemies and instantly teleport backwards.
Range: 600
Damage: 305
Combo Finisher: Leap
Recast: 45 seconds.

Wow this sound like a great idea. Some of the abilities damage seems on the low side, but overall fairly nice.

Turrets currently scale very poorly, and if used in dungeons often get one shotted vey quickly. That leaves your with 3 non usable utility skills for close to a minute. Currently, as far as dungeons are concerned, turrets aren’t a viable option.

However In PVE situations, they can be extremely useful; especially when fighting in the water.

In PvP they also get 1-shotted when used on land, and again become very useful in the water.

While I am dissatisfied with the why the rifle works on the Engineer, I am not asking for the rifle to be changed. However, considering that a rifle Is supposed to be a long range direct damage dealing weapon, and yet it currently is not, it’s only fair for players dissatisfied with its setup to voice their dissatisfaction.

We want a REAL long range weapon or kit that deals direct damage, with all of its skills, not just an auto attack like the current rifle setup. So far all we have for long range damage is the grenade kit, which is very useful if your enemy happens to be standing still, and you happen to be standing still.

A comparison is made between the warrior and engineer rifle skills because from a damage/distance standpoint the warriors rifle skill setup is far superior.

If another kit was added, perhaps a sniper rifle kit, or another long range weapon option that actually deals damage from long range, many many engineer players would be satisfied. Including those that enjoy the rifle the way it currently is now because the current rifle skills set wouldn’t be touched.
